he concept of an arranged marriage is quiet unique to Indian culture. The families choose the bride and the groom as per their own beliefs and customs and the two strangers are tied for a lifetime by the knot of holy matrimony. There is no question of a courting period or the individual preferences of the bride or the groom. This is a beautiful and heart warming story of a girl called Akshara who, not unlike millions of other girls in India, knows that her marriage will happen with the consent of her parents and family. Like other young girls, she also has grown up fancying film stars and cricket starsĂ–but to fall in love before marriage remains a distant dream for her. Akshara is born into a traditional Marwari family- the Maheshwari family of Udaipur. She is the apple of everyone's eye and lives a protected and sheltered life. Her family loves her very much and sets up her alliance with a deserving boy of their community. Although she willingly accepts her marriage with Naitik, whom her parents have chosen as her life partner, she realizes that their relationship is not like any of the romantic notions she had nurtured in her heart about her future husband.

abki Laadli Bebo is all about a cute, cheerful, innocent girl Bebo--- who is loved by her family immeasurably. This affluent, respectable, traditional Punjabi family of three brothers and their parents always yearned for a girl child and their happiness knew no bounds when after years God answered their prayers and a daughter was born. She is a precious jewel in the house and there is amazing bond between each of them. Unheard and unexposed to the sorrows and miseries of life she knows only to smile and laugh. Her motto of life is to be happy and make others happy and she is proud to be born in such a loving family.

When Meera is about 8-9 yrs old she wants a "gudda" whom she can marry. Sant Raidasji gives her Lord Krishna's idol, and Meera immediately falls in love with the Lord. Meera truly believes that the Lord is her husband. Soon after, her marriage is fixed with Bhoj Raj, the son of Rana Sangha of Chittor. But Meera remained, in mind heart and soul, married to the Lord and never accepted the prince as her husband. Post her marriage her life was constantly engulfed in turmoil, as very few could understand her devotion and faith towards Lord Krishna. It is a story relevant even in today's day and age- as Meera embodies a woman's true love and her ultimate sacrifice to remain loyal to that love even in the face of social stigma and opposition.

ight year old Amiran is kidnapped by criminal Dilawar Khan in retaliation for her father speaking against him. She is sold to Khannum Sahib (Shabana Azmi), owner of a 'kotha' in Lucknow. Renamed Umrao Jaan Ada she is soon a name of consequence and the entire Lucknowi community is dazzled by her beauty, charms and skills. Though the exclusive clientele of the kotha was for the moneyed and powerful, Umrao herself desired the attention of a single man - Nawab Sultan (Abhishek Bachchan). The nawab commanded vast riches and power, and equally returned Umrao's affection. However, Umrao unintentionally bewitched Faiz Ali (Sunil Shetty), a hardened outlaw. Faiz' love for Umrao was true, belying the world's scorn for him as a disreputable and lawless man. In his desire to have Umrao as his own, he threatens the future of the Umrao and the Nawab, the only man she's ever loved. Will Umrao Jaan indeed get true love? Will she be able to live a life with her Nawab forever? Will Faiz give Umrao up to the Nawab? Will Umrao's dream of her own house and family be fulfilled?

BARBARA & SON
○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○
uccess is whimsical and not all of us are quick off the mark. Some bloom later than others; can that be an advantage? Amitabh Bachchan is a late bloomer; success actually came his way when he was in his early 30's! After honing skills with full-time theatre, street plays and a lot of struggle, actor Anupam Kher finally made a distinct mark with Saaransh at 28. "I am glad that I did not start at 20-22. Perhaps, I would have landed some romantic role in Rajshri's and would have got the title of 'has been' by now. My launch was a big one and I have survived for 26 years!" says Kher. In the industry where youth matters, actor Arjun Rampal's Bollywood innings have finally come of age in his late 30s. Known as a comeback kid with several consecutive hits, he is now looking forward to better opportunities. His recent box-office Housefull was a success and he has an important role in much-awaited Raajneeti. Vidya Balan made her Hindi film debut with Parineeta in her late 20's at an age when many actresses in the past have bid goodbye to their careers. "I have absolutely no regrets..otherwise I wouldn't have landed the role in Parineeta," she says. Guru Dutt was considered a good director, but it was not until he made masterpieces like Kaagaz ke Phool and Pyaasa that he was truly counted as a genius! Cinema beckoned actor Boman Irani at 44. "I have been a late bloomer in every aspect of my life. Earlier, I had got into photography at 32-33. I didn't expect cinema to take on my life," says Irani, who caught people's attention with his role in Munnabhai MBBS.

arbara Mori's 12-year-old son Sergio will soon hit the big screen in a Mexican film, with his mommy. The movie is being produced by Barbara's production house. After having shot her first Bollywood movie Kites, the actress now plans to concentrate on her regional films, rather than on Hollywood. A source reveals that, Sergio is quite excited to face the camera.
"Sergio has been on the movie sets from quite an early age. He is looking forward to shooting with his mom." Sergio plays Barbara's son in the film. The movie is about a single mother finding love, late in her life. It will showcase the mother-son bond between the two. However, this isn't the first time Barbara and Sergio will be facing the camera together. The two have previously done a commercial shoot for the global 'Got Milk' campaign.

ll is not well between Arshad Warsi and his wife Maria. The two have had a rocky relationship since a couple of months. Apparently, Arshad moved out of their Yari Road house in Mumbai after a recent fight with Maria. A source said, “Arshad has left his Yari Road house and now lives in a flat in Andheri. The couple has not been on good terms for some time now. In the past too, there were reports about them having problems. It seems that the problem has now reached a point where they canít get along any longer. Arshad moved out of their house before reaching the sets of Golmaal 3 in Goa, where he is currently shooting.” Commenting on the reason behind the constant fights, the source added, “The bone of contention has been Arshadís link-up with Dia Mirza. Maria obviously is not happy about it. It looked like they had reached a compromise in the past, but it was clearly a temporary arrangement. The entire industry was shocked last year when reports of their tumultuous relationship started doing the rounds. Arshad finally decided to move out of the house. Their two children are with Maria.” June 2010 I 6 I KonnecTV

for her disregard for security rules. In fact, Katrina has always disregarded security threats. Some time ago, when hordes of young and old people had descended on her at a public gathering, she had fobbed off the security arrangements made by the organisers, arguing, "They love me. They can never harm me." The actress has been indulging in such reckless security misadventures much too often these days. According to a close friend, she takes off on her own, usually accompanied by her trusted driver and no other companion, just for a spin far away, to drive off loneliness. What concerns people close to Katrina is her utter obliviousness to obvious security dangers. "Katrina doesn't realise the effect that her solitary presence in crowded places can have on people. Hopping into a cab early morning in Mumbai when there are no cops around is just not done. But she refuses to believe anyone would harm her," a close friend said. The British actress lives on her own in India and her latest adventure-ride to the airport on her own has left her family far from amused. Her youngest sister Isabel, who has been studying cinema in the US, may cut short her acting course to join Katrina in Mumbai. It seems Katrina's days of zipping off on her own are coming an end, thanks to the timely intervention of her family.

"If I had waited any more, I would've missed my flight. So I waved for a cab, hopped in and zipped off." While Katrina cracks up at the recollection of the moment when the cabbie spotted her in the rear, her Raajneeti crew were far from amused when they saw her hop out of a cab unaccompanied. Ranbir and director Prakash Jha were seen soundly ticking her off

urgaon-based Kandula Subramaniamís marriage was on the rocks, he and wife Krishnakoli Dutta were living separately for a while, and the depressed husband was doing everything possible to win his wife back. But in vain. Until Kandula remembered that Krishnakoli was a big Shah Rukh Khan fan. And he figured the Bollywood supremo, who features on the ëMost Powerfulí lists of international magazines and portals, might just be able to swing his marriage around for him. Desperately, he sought SRKís e-mail address and wrote the actor an impassioned letter explaining his dismal circumstances and imploring him to step in and try and bring Krishnakoli around. Shah Rukh, still busy untangling the IPL mess and working on his next film Ra-1, took remedial action promptly. On May 18, which was Krishnakoliís birthday, she got a phone call. And on the line was her idol!

ANOTHER BABY? A
fter adopting two kids, former Miss Universe and actor Sushmita Sen now wants to give birth to a child. "I'll go for biological baby because the clock is ticking for me," said Sush, 34. The actress ducked questions about her marriage. "I said the clock is ticking... I never said anything about marriage," she snapped when reporters asked whether marriage was on the cards. Sushmita, who adopted her second baby daughter Alisah in March, says the eight-month old infant is already showing signs of becoming a beauty queen. "Alisah is only eight months old, but she was the first one to check out the crowns that the winners of the 'I Am She' pageant wore. And she was so excited about it," says Sen proudly. Having been an actress and a model herself, Sen says she will encourage her daughters, Renee and Alisah, if they want to follow in her footsteps. "Renee already says that
she wants to be an actress. But ultimately, it's up to them. All I could dream of was becoming an air hostess, and look what destiny had in store for me," she says. The actress, who recently got a tattoo that reads `I AM' inscribed on her wrist. Sen has four tattoos in all, and is still counting. Ask if she will ever consider tattooing a man's name on her body and she says, "Never make that mistake, darling... The only way I would tattoo a man's name on my body, is if it were my son's name." Is that a hint that she will soon adopt a baby boy? "Why adopt? I may want to have biological children now. My biological clock is ticking away, so you never know." So, is marriage on the cards? "Who said anything about marriage?" she counters, adding, "It's not like I don't want to get married. I believe, like any other girl, in `Prince Charming'. I may not behave like a 12 year old, but I do believe in it."

Dutt recently met with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to discuss setting up a worldclass film city like MGM and Universal in the state. "We have proposed for a hi-tech film city in Gujarat and Modiji's response was quite positive. He has suggested establishing it in Kutch," Dutt, 51, told the media. Talking about his plans for the year, he said, "This year, I'm looking forward to three films -- Lamhaa, Knock Out and No Problem. And a cute little baby in my arms. I really want to have a child this year. I am keeping my fingers crossed and praying for it." About his daughter Trishala from his first marriage, he said, "She is studying Forensic Science in the US and will be graduating this year. She is an intelligent girl. I hope to see her working with the FBI in the future. I'd be extremely disappointed to see her in the film industry." Dutt, who recently got an ad endorsement for a cola brand, says he's always been open to TV. "I wasn't the one shying away. May be the multinationals were, because of my court case. Now that I'm no longer a terror suspect, I'm looking forward to some good offers," he said.

hen the wrap-up bash for I Hate Luv Stories was busted by cops, the party animals took it to another level… With a rowdy, young crew, one can expect lots of fun and frolic on the sets. That's exactly what happened on the sets of Puneet Malhotra's debut rom-com I Hate Luv Stories, starring Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor. The twenty-something crew had a rollicking time in New Zealand, but were almost busted by the cops. A source said, "On the last day of the shoot in New Zealand, we had a wrap-up party in one of the hotel rooms. Puneet played songs from his IPod and everyone danced to the latest Bollywood numbers. We played Pappu Can't Dance for Imran and most of choreographer Bosco's songs. Everybody including the assistant directors, hair stylists and makeup artists were in high spirits. Imran and Sonam also did a jig on the dining table, which had everyone in splits. "The party went on in full swing till the wee hours of morning, till the cops suddenly came and stopped the party. We were shooting in Queenstown, which is a very quiet place, and everything shuts down early except the bars. There was a residential area right next to our hotel. The residents must have complained about the loud music. The cops told us to continue having a party but in a club. We tried lowering the loud music, but it wasn't much fun. So the entire unit consisting of 40 people took cabs and headed to a bar, where we partied till 7 am. The dhamaal didn't end there because Sonam and a few crew members went skydiving after the party," added the source.

ithin months of their break-up, lovebirds Amisha Patel and Kanav Puri are back together Amisha Patel and her London based businessman boyfriend Kanav Puri have kissed and made up. The couple had split earlier this year. The reason for the break-up was said to be Amisha's repeated refusal to set a date for marriage. Kanav apparently was keen on tying the knot and had made this clear to Amisha, but she was more interested in reviving her flagging acting career. Explaining how the patch-up came about, a close friend of the couple said, "Recently, Amisha went to London and spent a lot of time with Kanav. They discussed the issue at length and realised that they are meant for each other. So they've decided to continue the relationship and think about marriage at a later stage," added the source. While Amisha could not be reached for comment, her mother Asha Patel said, "It is Amisha's personal life. I don't interfere in it." Alright mom, hit nahin toh love sahi…

ollywood's abuzz with this one. Excel Entertainment's road movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara starts June 7 in Spain. With a handsome star cast that includes Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar, Spanish actress Ariadna Cabrol, Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin, Zoya's film has already found itself a fan following. Filmfare Award winning director Zoya says, "I'm aware that there are all kinds of speculation going about ZNMD. Some have said it's a sequel to Dil Chahta Hai. But none of this is the truth. DCH is a cult film. And Reema Kagti, my co-writer, and I are not interested in copying anything. We've set out to make a fun film that pertains to the youth and connects with the maximum number of people." Producer Ritesh Sidhwani says, "We've
managed a coup." Zoya, who agrees wholeheartedly, says, "This is a dream cast; I'm fortunate that Farhan and Ritesh got these actors to agree. Between Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay, my three leading men, I've pretty much got every chick in the audience covered. Jokes apart, each of these guys has a distinct audience and their individual fan base is enviable." Hrithik Roshan says he's excited about Zoya's film. Having worked together on Luck By Chance, they are in tandem with each other's sensibilities. Zoya, who knows brother Farhan's strengths as an actor, feels he suits his role in ZNMD to the 't'. "And Abhay is going to be the surprise package," she says. For Katrina, the fact that she is teaming up with Hrithik for the first time is very interesting. As for Kalki, Zoya says, "She comes with a different set of sensibilities, but from what one knows of her - she can rise to any challenge."

DREAM CAST
i sexy!" Bhumika Chawla greets a lady who drops by. We strain our ears hoping we heard her right for it just doesn't seem to go with Bhumika's butter-wouldn't-melt-in-her mouth image that's been stamped on our minds over the last decade. The beautiful actress who's best remembered as the simple girl next door in Tere Naam or the non-glam journo in Anasuya seems to have lot more surprises in store as she unveils her smokin' hot new look. "I've never gone beyond salwar kurtas and jeans, but my husband Bharat (Thakur) says I should be wearing dresses more often," she says with a warm smile. Marriage sure has changed her we observe and she agrees, "As a single woman, I felt the necessity to maintain a certain decorum as I had to fend for myself, but now that Bharat's by my side, I'm bolder. He's there to take care of me." In an industry where marriage spells doom for a leading actress, it has worked the other way for Bhumika. For someone who was worked with most A-line actors in Tollywood and Bollywood and has done her share of meaningful roles, carried films on the strength of her performance without succumbing to the pressure of being a 'glam girl' what's her opinion on the subject? "It's all about demand and supply - if you supply they will demand!" she laughs. "I don't condemn skin show, but it has to be aesthetic. You need to have the figure to carry off those outfits, otherwise it won't look good," she puts it mildly but her mischievous smile speaks volumes. Her second prerequisite, if she ever had to wear a revealing outfit, is that "it has to justify the role and should not be just for a song and dance routine" she says. Bhumika who keeps "shuttling between Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad" these days is busy wrapping up "a women-centric Telugu film" and a Tamil film Kalavadiya Pozhudugal with Prabhu Deva and Prakash Raj which she describes as a "fun as well as enriching experience". Bhumika's new office is teeming with activity as her first solo production venture Takita Takita is in the final stages. Bhumika does seem to tilt heavily in favour of meaningful roles and she agrees, "The two Telugu films I'm doing now have powerful messages to convey," she says and adds that all her roles are special to her but she considers her roles in Okkadu, Missamma, Anasuya, Gandhi My Father and Family as "memorable ones". Meanwhile Bharat walks in with the colourful posters designed for their film. Seem like a good husband-wife business team. But Bhumika's quick to counter, "Even if I understand business I choose to not involve myself in it. It's very important for a couple to maintain healthy boundaries. It saves a lot of emotional friction." So is this the secret of a happy married life? "So far, so good," she says and goes on to add, "I still feel Bharat is my boyfriend!" And what's the big lesson marriage has taught her we quiz and she replies playfully, "You better have a sense of humour!" Bhumika's life mantra is to "try and not hurt anybody. It's easy to put down others but as my father would say 'there's always a better way to say things'." We couldn't agree more!

riyanka Chopra will be performing the most daring stunts ever by an Indian female celebrity as the host for the new season of Khatron Ke Khiladi. For this purpose, a special gym has been set up for Priyanka in the jungles of Coorg. Priyanka said, "A gym has been set up for me here in Coorg. I need to be in even better shape than I am right now, and for that I needed to train now before I leave for Brazil in August. No one is going to judge my stunts leniently - they'll compare my stunts with my predecessor's (Akshay Kumar). I better be just as good." Responding to rumours that the channel is finding it hard to sign top notch cricketers post the IPL scandal, Priyanka said, "As far as I know, we're shooting with cricketers in August-September in Brazil." However, there's news awaiting the actress when she returns from Coorg. Apparently, the channel has decided to do away with the cricketers as contestants and sign 13 other male celebrities instead. Says a source from the television industry, "The last thing that the cricketers need is to be seen having fun in the jungles of Brazil in Priyanka Chopra's company. The channel is now seriously considering replacing the cricketers with other celebrities. Their logic is simple - they have the hot babe in place, so how does it matter whether the celebrities are cricketers or models." Prudent, indeed!

eepika Padukone is all praise for actor Neil Nitin Mukesh. The duo is shooting for Pradeep Sarkar's Lafange Parindey, and Neil has gained a reputation of being so protective of her that he gets tense every time she has to perform a stunt. "It's very sweet of him. But I insist on doing what I want to. Neil does get tense," said the actress. "He is such a well brought-up guy, absolutely impeccable in his manners. Besides being a brilliant actor, he's also a great technician. I see him turning director soon." Neil is not the only co-star Padukone is going gaga over. "My other co-star, Imran Khan, in Kunal Kohli's Break Ke Baad is great fun too. We shot in Delhi and bonded immediately," said Deepika. Asked if she faced any repercussions for acting with Imran, her ex-beau Ranbir Kapoor's supposed industry competitor, immediately after she and Ranbir broke up, the actress retorted, "No one tells me what to do and what not to do. My personal life has nothing to do with my professional one. Imran is a wonderful co-star. I like working with actors who are fun yet professional. Asked about rumours of her linkup with liquor baron Vijay Mallya's son, Siddharth, Deepika said, "Can't I be seen with the people I'm working with without being linked to them? Siddharth Mallaya runs the whole IPL (Indian Premier League) show for his father. So it was natural for me to celebrate with him when our team won. The IPL season is over. So the rumour will end soon." The actress is ecstatic about the roles she's doing. "Housefull was a new experience as I had to do comedy. FAVOURITES Amitabh Bachchan
I
don't know where to start when it comes to Bachchan saab. Jiss qadar woh zor se wapas aaye… amazing! (I marvel at the way he bounced back after severe setbacks.) When it comes to perfection as an artiste, he's 110 per cent perfect. Give him any role, and he slips into it effortlessly. I've never seen him repeat himself. He made me cry in Baghban. I recently saw Black and can't get over his performance. Kamaal ke actor hain…(He's a fabulous actor). And he sings well too! I've listened carefully to Holi khele and Tu kahan main yahan in Baghban. They are in sur. Singing in sur is far more important than maintaining taal. His voice is God's gift to him. His performances are impeccable. On a social level, we meet once in a while. He's charming and always talks with restraint. His pedigree is unquestionable. When I started singing in 1947, I began reading up on Hindi litterateurs including Premchand, Mahadevi Varma, Jaishankar Prasad and, of course, Harivansh Rai Bachchan. I've read Madhushala several times
Lata Mangeshkar tracks celluloid heroes and tells what she loves about them… over; also his bulky autobiography which is a unique work of self-revelation. I don't know whether Bachchan saab knows this, but I truly respect him and Jayaji. Mere dil mein unke liye khaas jagah hai. (They hold a special place in my heart.)"

His grandfather was a great composer and his grandmother a very good singer. His uncle Rajesh Roshan is a well-known composer and even Hrithik's father Rakesh has a very good music sense. His musical heritage comes alive in his dance moves. Hrithik's a brilliant actor too. Woh itna sundar acting karta hai ki main hairaan ho jaati hoon. (I am stunned by his acting.) I think his greatest gift from God is that he looks very innocent. His eyes are so deep and transparent…"

rakash Jha has made a mark in the industry with movies like Apaharan and Gangajaal. As for his new film Raajneeti, a political thriller, he claims, "This is my most complete film." "Raajneeti` has been a long journey. It is a film about politics and tries to cover most aspects involved in politics - personal, family, social, state, national. Basically, the film tries to showcase what happens in politics." He says some of the characters have been inspired from The Mahabharata. For instance the character of Arjun Rampal in the movie is a modern day adaptation of Bhim. The story revolves around the state of elections in the country. Raajneeti is centred on politics in relationships. Adjustments, manipulations, manoeuvring are some of the things that happen in relationships and the movie portrays that. 'Sometimes winning is the sole motive', Raajneeti is all about this. It depicts the internal power struggle within a family.

Raajneeti` has been a long journey. It is a film about politics and tries to cover most aspects involved in politics - personal, family, social, state, national. Basically, the film tries to showcase what happens in politics Katrina is not exactly playing a non-glamorous role. She has portrayed a beautiful, young glamorous lady in the first half of the movie but in second half, when film takes a much more serious turn, she turns into a nonglamorous avatar. Jha says Ranbir Kapoor in the movie plays a character that studies outside India and later enters into the political fray of his family. Arjun
Rampal plays the role of Ranbir's elder brother and also Katrina's husband. The film features an impressive ensemble cast with actors such as Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpai, Arjun Rampal, Naseeruddin Shah and Ajay Devgn playing major roles. The filmmaker says he has had a fulfilling experience working with each and every member of the cast, including the "badmaash" Ranbir and Katrina. "I am grateful to god that Ranbir agreed to play this role. He has put in days and nights of effort to play his character and he has done it with utmost honesty. He is one of my dearest actors and I really thank god for giving me Ranbir for this film," said Jha, as Ranbir bent down to touch his feet out of respect. Jha was all praise for Katrina Kaif, who overcame her difficulty in speaking Hindi and delivered her dialogues with clarity even in front of a gathering of 10,000 people.
"Katrina is inspiring. Her quality of work, innocence, honesty and dedication is extremely inspiring. The movie was very tough for Katrina and it took her a lot of courage and confidence to essay the role, give it her best. It`s my good luck that I cast her," he said. Though Katrina`s simple and sari-clad look in the film has been attracting queries about the resemblance of her character with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Jha said: "The film is not based on any political party or follows any ideology. It is a film that is based on reality of the politics." Reluctant Kat Katrina Kaif was not willing to do the lead role of a politician in Raajneeti and she was in fact was shocked when the director of the film offered the role. She thought that Prakash Jha, director of the film was confusing for some other actress and came to her wrong address. So, she asked the director if he had seen any of her films. Katrina was known for light comedy roles in the Bollywood films and had never done any serious characters. This is the reason that she was shocked when Raajneeti was offered to her. She plays a serious politician in the film. Her character is taken from the epic Mahabharat's Draupadi in the film. Katrina has said that the film is a different step in her carrier. The National Award winner actor for his performance in the film "Rock On" revealed that his character is based on Bhim from the epic Mahabharata. "He (Prithiviraj Pratap) is a person with a big heart and wants to achieve something fast in life. He is aggressive. He is a person who sees either black or white. If he likes something, he loves it. If he dislikes something, he hates it. So he would be on that level of extremes. He goes through gamut of emotions. trailer of Mani Ratnam's bilingual Raavan/Raavanan was screened for the media at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. The event was attended by the lead stars of the movie, Vikram, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Amit Khanna of Reliance Big Pictures, which has produced the films, described Mani Ratnam as arguably the best Indian director living today, and said that he and the rest believed in taking such rare movies as Raavan/Raavanan across the globe. Both the Hindi and Tamil versions will open in 58 countries on July 18. He hoped that this world would help transcend barriers. Suhasini, Mani Ratnam's wife and the film's co-producer and dialogue writer for the Tamil edition, said that it would help "us understand the grey parts that all of us have in usĂ–None of us is completely white or black". She was all praise for A.R. Rahman's music, and said that it merged beautifully with the story. In fact, the music accentuated picture. Songs have a great role to play. They do take the plot forward. Most Indian movies and stories can trace their origins to the two great epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and Raavan/Raavanan was not different. It has been inspired by the Ramayana, though it really is not a take-off on that. Incidentally, Ratnam shot both versions simultaneously, something he has never done before, and Vikram and Aishwarya play in both. Bachchan figures only in the Hindi version. He told the media that his part was his career's most challenging, most difficult and most stimulating. It was physically exhausting, and Vikram agreed. Rai felt that apart from the intricacies of essaying the Hindi and Tamil heroine all at the same time, the inhospitable jungle terrain where they shot Ratnam's work posed its own hazards. But at the end of it all, she and the rest found a sense of immense satisfaction and joy. Vikram agreed, and said in a private conversation that he dubbed for the Hindi version as well. "If Aishwarya could have dubbed for the Tamil edition, why not I for Hindi", he quipped. Raavan/Ravanan is the story of Dev (Vikram) and his wife, Ragini (Aishwarya), a classical dancer whose trials begin when he takes up a new posting in a small north Indian town. There the police do not execute the law, but Beera (Abhishek), who has changed the power equation. The characters of Rama, Sita and Raavan have taken a contemporary shape in the movie. Partially shot in the Vedic Village housing complex in Kolkata and in the jungles of Kerala, Raavan has a star cast comprising Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu, south superstar Vikram, Govinda, Nikhil Dwivedi, Mani Ratnam's wife Suhasini, Priyamani, Ranjitha and Ravi Kishan. Though everything about the movie is a well-guarded secret, buzz is quite strong that the maverick Mani Ratnam has shot four climaxes for the film and in one of the climaxes Raavan (Abhishek) wins the heart of Sita (Aishwarya). Of the other two climaxes, one has Rama (Vikram) dying while the other has Raavan being slain. Abhishek's character of the antagonist Raavan also has the shades of Naxalite leader Kobad Ghandy. The first teaser of the film has already done the trick, as many are in complete awe of Abhishek's demonic look. Get more information log on to www.mindblowingfilms.com.

ctor turned debutante director Parmeet Sethi walks the tight rope of handling a complex subject and offering entertainment simultaneously, in his very first film. Badmaash Company is a decent attempt, with several captivating moments and power-packed performances by each and every member of its cast. We often grudge that entertainment-laden films make no sense these days, but this one entertains and also makes sense. Badmaash Company is set in the 1990s in middle class Mumbai, of four ordinary youngsters [Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang and Vir Das], who came together to start an import business of things longed for by yuppie Indians. What made their venture such a stupendous success was the fact that they found a way to beat the system and soon became the undisputed kings in their business, realizing their one dream of making quick money is by doing all the wrong things the right way. Living the life of champagne wishes and caviar dreams, the four friends discover that to make a business successful, you don't need big money. All you need is a big idea. All is well and hunky dory till one day the four maverick entrepreneurs are forced to shut shop. The best thing about Badmaash Company is that you identify with the mindset of those who aspire to reach the pinnacle of success using shortcuts. The scams and the con games the youth indulge in are easy to decipher and least complicated, which works in its favor. Another strong point is the camaraderie that the four actors share on screen. The film would've fallen flat if the chemistry was missing, but the bonding looks so real that you forget that they are merely enacting those roles. Badmaash Company has some terrific moments. The sequences in Bangkok are enjoyable. Ditto for the showdown between the friends in the post-interval hour. The transformation in Shahid's persona is also beautifully depicted. Pritam's music is foot-tapping and almost every song has been filmed very well. Sanjay Kapoor's cinematography is just right.

T
he two handsome human beings in Kites, Jai (Hrithik Roshan) and Linda (Barbara Mori) start off on an entirely materialistic plane. Early in the film when they run into each other in entirely unromantic circumstances, you know these two desperate souls will make a run for love even if it means losing their lives. Basu's finely-written film walks a very delicate line between a romance and a crime-caper. If the first- quarter of this handsomely evocative drama echoes Woody Allen's Matchpoint the rest of the high-octane adventure saga pays a nudging tribute to Arthur Penn's Bonnie & Clyde. To the film's credit the couple's desperate passion is never represented by scene after scene of torrid love scenes. The kisses are furtive, feeling and fleeting. Hrithik is the kind of actor who can express urgent passion with the narrowing of his eyes and the clenching of his jaws. In this strangely uncharted film about lovers on the run, Hrithik creates quite a tangible graph for his character who starts off as a self-serving green-card hungry ogre and then rapidly moves into the embrace of desperate passion for a woman who is engaged to marry into a very dangerous family. The crisscross of commitments and relationships is achieved in an easygoing sweep of drama and crime. The rest is taken care of by heart-in-the-mouth car chase sequences and stunts that seem to be done with an expertise uncommon to Hindi cinema. Ayananka Bose's cinematography is at times too flashy to underline the protagonist's passion as seen in the bustle of hedonism. Akiv Ali's editing specially of the final 20 minutes is evocative and energetic rendering words as redundant as the film's lovers speaking to one another in two languages that are incomprehensible to one another. The writing is as clever as the looks and lines that the lovers exchange. Barbara and Hrithik take care of the rest. As said earlier Hrithik is in exceptional shape every which way. Barbara looks somewhat maturer than Hrithik in some scenes. But her vivacity and natural ability to grasp the essence of human bonding makes us forget the age factor. Shot in the most eye-catching casinos of Las Vegas and the toasted-brown deserts of Mexico Kites is a minor feast for the senses. Yes it has its over-cute annoying interactive moments. But these pass quickly. And we are left with a feeling of having witnessed an exhilarating excursion into a terrain where the heart meets an intersection and swerves dangerously into a self-destructive zone.

ollywood's sex symbol Deepika Padukone got a thumbs up from various designers for the perfect attire she was in - on her very first appearance on the red carpet of the 63rd Cannes Festival, one of the world's oldest and prestigious film festivals. She stole the limelight from the experienced Aishwarya Rai who made many a fashion blunder at the Film Festival. Aishwarya Rai, who has been attending the French film festival since 2002 as the global face of L'Oreal, has been drawing criticism from designers for her wrong choice of outfits and was only appreciated last year when she wore a white off-shoulder Roberto Cavalli. 24-year-old Deepika was able to make the right choice in her first go itself. The young actress, who was attending the event as the face of liquor brand Chivas Regal, opted for a Rohit Bal off-white, slightly embroidered saree with touches of gold, instead of a western look.

Designer Charu Parashar said, "She was wearing a saree and I think that's an appropriate outfit for any Indian diva walking an international platform. It was a nice off-white saree with a sexy blouse, making the look exude a good amount of glitz and glamour." About speculations that she, Aishwarya Rai and Mallika Sherawat avoided each other at the festival, she says, "I was there just for a day. I'm not aware of who else was there and what they were doing."
`Bird's nest' hairdo Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, in a stunning tulle Elie Saab couture gown, was all set to score a perfect 10 on the red carpet of 63rd Cannes film festival, but her `bird's nest' hairdo let her down. The actress blew kisses on the red carpet, alongside Hollywood beauty Eva Longoria Parker at the screening of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. Many Indian designers felt that Aishwarya was looking 'pretty' and 'elegant' in a June 2010 I 32 I KonnecTV
train gown at the opening ceremony. While her choice of the dress was appreciated by most style critics, her hairstyle, with a voluminous pouf above her forehead is being panned for being `too matronly'. She has often been criticised for favouring western couture over Indian ensembles during her much publicised stints on the French Riviera but Aishwarya was spotted in a traditional outfit on day six. Giving her company on the red carpet was husband Abhishek Bachchan in a tuxedo. The actress, who is one of the best known Indian faces across the globe, has shied away from wearing ethnic outfits ever since her debut at Cannes in 2003, when she was criticised for wearing a green sari. 'Aishwarya is in Cannes for L'Oreal every year as part of the International Dream Team of L'Oreal where on instruction she must wear international western designer wear,' the actress' spokesperson said. The 36-year-old wore a creation by Kolkata-based designer Sabyasachi
Mukherjee. The actress, who has become a permanent fixture at the Cannes red carpet over the years, has wowed the snappers with her choice of gowns. After opening the 63rd Festival in style, Aishwarya upped the glamour quotient on day 2 with this Giorgio Armani Prive black evening gown at the Palais des Festivals. She was spotted with her fellow brand ambassador, Eva Longoria, at the red carpet for the screening of the French Tournee (On Tour) by director Mathieu Amalric.
The Hiss miss Mallika Sherawat's latest promotional tools were lethal in more than one sense. The actress posed, actually, got cosy with, live snakes during a photo call for her next film, Hisss, in which she plays a
snake woman, at the Cannes Festival. Mallika shared this information with her millions of fans on popular social networking site Twitter. Said the actress, "And now for a very special and private photo shoot in Cannes with my date, Rudy the Sssnake." The paparazzi surely went crazy as Madame Sherawat posed and pouted rather comfortably with the creepy looking creature. While Hissss directed by Jennifer Lynch is all slated to release this August, Mallika was making sure that the promotions for this film are nothing short of 'Hissstoric'. Mallika also had the privilage cut the ribbon while showman Subhash Ghai opened the book of producers by India's Ministry of Inforamtion and Broadcasting on the inaugural day of Indian pavilion at Cannes Festival on 12th May. Fashion-wise Mallika kept a relatively low profile with demure choices. She had grabbed headlines with her first appearance at Cannes, when she opted for a plunging golden blouse paired with a slashed skirt as she posed with Jackie Chan for the photocall of their film The Myth. Her fashion choices again caused a stir when she turned up at the premiere of 'Inglorious Basterds' in Los Angeles wearing a sheer black gown with her underwear visible.
Back from the grave
Many Indian designers felt that Aishwarya was looking 'pretty' and 'elegant' in a train gown at the opening ceremony. While her choice of the dress was appreciated by most style critics, her hairstyle, with a voluminous pouf above her forehead is being panned for being `too matronly'
The 1984 hit Khandhar was `restored' to be showcased in the `Classics' section at Cannes Film Festival. Directed and co-written by Mrinal Sen, famed for his political films, Khandhar stars Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah. The Cannes jury had written to Mrinal Sen asking him to submit the film last year for the Cannes Classic section, but the print quality was in poor condition. "They asked for it again this year and it just happened that a pristine restoration had been done," explains Anil Arjun, CEO of Reliance MediaWorks, the company that restored it. The Cannes Classics section is a noncompetition section that aims to celebrate classic films from the past with brand new or restored prints. Khandhar shares space with 12 other films in that category, including Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock and Le Grand Amour (1987) by Pierre Etaix. Khandhar has been subtitled into French especially for the festival. Complex process It took 5,000 man-hours to restore Khandhar into a fresh 35mm reel at the restoration facilities in Navi Mumbai. Crossword Dinosaurs Caged Bird Craft This paper bird in a yarn cage is easy to make but the flour glue that holds the string cage together takes a long time to dry (a day or more depending on the temperature and humidity).
ACROSS
Supplies needed: • A lot of string or yarn • A balloon • Scissors • Flour and water glue • Construction paper Make a simple, thin glue from flour and water (boiling gives it a nice consistency). Mix 1/4 cup of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir into 1 cup of boiling water. Simmer for about 3 minutes, then cool. (You can make this glue without cooking it, but it isn't as smooth that way.) Have an adult do the cooking. Blow up a balloon. Dip a few feet of string or yarn into the flour glue, let the excess drip off, and wrap it around the balloon. Repeat until you have wrapped enough yarn around the balloon to look like a cage. After the glue has dried (this can take a few days if the humidity is high), pop the balloon and throw it away. Attach a length of string to the cage (you can hang it from this string). Either print out the bird template or draw your own bird on construction paper. Cut the bird out along its outlines and color it (on both sides of the paper). Cut a few inches of string - tape one end to the bird's neck. Hang the bird inside the string cage. (You may have to roll the bird up to get it in the cage.) You now have a paper bird in a string cage.

man had a little dog, and he was very fond of it. He would pat its head, and take it on his knee, and talk to it. Then he would give it little bits of food from his own plate. A donkey looked in at the window and saw the man and the dog. "Why does he not make a pet of me?" said the donkey.
DONKEY WHO WANTED TO BE A PET "It is not fair. I work hard, and the dog only wags its tail, and barks, and jumps on its master's knee. It is not fair." Then the donkey said to himself, "If I do what the dog does, he may make a pet of me." So the donkey ran into the room. It brayed as loudly as it could. It wagged its tail so hard that it knocked over a jar on the table. Then it tried to jump on to its master's knee. The master thought the donkey was mad, and he shouted, "Help! Help!" Men came running in with sticks, and they beat the donkey till it ran out of the house, and they drove it back to the field. "I only did what the dog does," said the donkey," and yet they make a pet of the dog, and they beat me with sticks. It is not fair."

M
y son had trouble multiplying and dividing by ten, a hundred, a thou sand, and so forth. When I sat down with him, I discovered the cause - he was using an outdated method. In grade 1 or 2, he would have picked up the rule: To multiply by 10, you add a zero at the end Now, that works fine for numbers like 3, 12 or 1739. To multiply these by zero, you really do add a zero on the end - getting 30, 120 and 17390. However, the rule fails you when you need to multiply decimals - add a zero onto the end of 19.47 and you get 19.470, not the right answer at all. I taught him to imagine, instead, that a number like 19.47 has an invisible infinite string of zeroes before and after - as if it were ...00000019.47000000..., say - and even a number like 3 has the same, as well as an invisible decimal place, making it ...0000000003.00000000... Then, I taught him a new rule : To multiply or divide by a power of 10, you shift the decimal point This rule is just as simple as the earlier one (once you know what a decimal point is), but it works for all kinds of numbers. So, to multiply 19.47 by 1000, he'll now shift the decimal place three spaces across, writing in any invisible zeroes he needs. So : ...00000019.47000000... ~> ...000000194.7000000... ~> ...0000001947.000000... ~> ...00000019470.00000... Or, to divide by 1000, he'd shift the decimal point three places to the left, so : ...00000019.47000000... ~> ...0000001.947000000... ~> ...000000.1947000000... ~> ...00000.01947000000... Hopefully, this new rule will set him straight.

SHORT STORY
There are 10 differences, can you find them all?
Snakes & a
quest
L
et's start with your experience in Cannes. How are you feeling? I'm on top of the world. This is my second coming to Cannes. I still haven't forgotten my first outing here with Jackie Chan. On Sunday, I danced with a python. The most exciting thing's that I'm introducing the Indian mythological icchadhari nagin to the West. You're working with Hollywood director Jennifer Lynch. Is it different from Bollywood in terms of punctuality and accountability? Aisa kuch nahin hai. Indians and Bollywood are as good as Westerners and Hollywood. It's just that we don't have big budgets and that puts a lot of restrictions. Frankly, every director has his own style. But yes, working with a woman (Lynch) is a bit easier. You share a better comfort level when you work with your own sex. Go on... Honestly, Hisss is very special to me. Vyjaynthimala, Sridevi, Rekha and Reena Roy have all played an icchadari nagin. Doing something that such legends have done is a matter of great honour. Who was the best - Vyjaynthimala, Sridevi, Rekha or Reena Roy? All four were great. But personally, I like Sridevi. Get ready for comparisons between you and Sridevi then. Oh no! Sridevi is in a league of her own. She is one of a kind. There can be no comparisons. Did you use your sexy body language in Hisss? Naturally. This role requires me to be the ultimate femme fatale. Let's say I slipped into this role very easily (laughs). But physically, the effort was daunting and draining. I couldn't go to the bathroom. I couldn't eat or drink. I had to sit in one place for 14-15 hours. Did you not get scared while dancing with the snake? I charmed the snake (laughs). Are you returning to mainstream cinema? I have not gone away. I have been staying in Los Angeles. But I do come down to India once a month. It's just that you don't come to see me (laughs). I am open to all sorts of roles from anywhere in the world. It's just that recently, I've been getting good offers from abroad. You see, cinema has gone global. And may I say that I love Bollywood? It has

always been my bread and butter. As soon as I wrap up my Hollywood films. Where do you stay in Los Angeles? I have an apartment in Los Angeles. And when you miss India...? You said it. I miss India a lot. At that point of time, I go to the yoga centre and meet friends. And hey! I forgot to tell you that they say that I am one of the 13 best dressed people in Cannes. I can't believe it. I think it's the result of hanging out with international fashion designers. Farak to padega na. You know what... What? I have evolved. Even my style of dressing has changed. You were known to wear less. So are you wearing more or are you wearing the same? Do you miss it? (laughs) Men still salivate for you in India. Are you getting that much male attention in foreign lands? Attention has never been a problem for me (laughs). Marriage? Kids? Do they figure in the list of Mallika's priorities? My brother (Vikram) says, "Who will tolerate your tantrums and bad behaviour?" Top it with my demand that I want a vegetarian yogi who meditates and neither smokes nor drinks. You don't want a hunk? No. It was being said that you were dating an Italian, and then Johnny Depp? These are all rumours, yaar. A leading industrialist, who is besotted with you, has bought a chalet for you abroad as a love-nest. A lot of men are besotted with me, but I don't know what you are talking about. I am very much single and that's how I have been for the major part of my life. Personally, I lead a very boring life reading books, TV and doing yoga. I just have this on-screen image which tends to precede me always. Do such rumours bother you? Your sexuality shadows many of your other virtues… Why should it bother me? It doesn't bother my fans either. It's a part of me and I am very proud and comfortable with it. I think that today, all good actors are sensual and sexy, aren't they? You say that you are single. Don't you yearn for male company? Of course, I do. I am a normal girl. But where will I find this yogi? No casual relationships? I don't believe in casual relationships. There is a strong perception in India that Mallika is a very ambitious girl. The perception is right. What's wrong with being ambitious? Shouldn't girls be ambitious? I get what I want on my terms. I am focussed. I know what I want and I shall get it. May you get the yogi you yearn for… (Laughs) Right now, I only want Hissss to do well. The yogi can wait (laughs again). Courtesy Delhi Times
Mallika Sherawat speaks about ambition, men and her quest for a yogi…
Home is where good food is: I believe in one thing. It is food that can keep us fit and healthy. It is food that can make us unfit and unhealthy. So why not stick to the first type of food so that we can actually experience longevity? And this first type of food is clearly defined by me as home cooked. It could be hot rotis straight from the flame with a light drizzle of fragrant ghee, the long grains of dazzling white basmati grains that somehow make rajma or kadhi as precious as caviar or those spongy wadas that soak up the sambhar. Well, be it a pulao, or a khichdi, maybe a stew or dal rice, it could be some dry vegetable with roti, but traditional home recipes do wonders for the spirit. These recipes keep the heart ticking ensconced in warmth of tradition and cultural riches. Food eaten together keeps the family together and even if there are major time constraints I am sure something can be done to get hot food onto the table once a day ìthe more Indian it is the betterî the more traditional Indian it is the best!

elina says her best feature is "my glowing skin and long, shining hair." And her secret: "Eat lots of papaya, drink lots of water, keep a healthy state of mind. And no smoking or drinking!" And what's your beauty routine? Yoga is a huge part of it as it always brings a glow to my face! I wash my face with plain water many times a day and every night I do the basic CTM. For hair, I get regular salon treatments and oil massages and I avoid colouring it. Skincare brands you always stock up on? Neutrogena! It really does wonders for me. And hair gets special attention too? Absolutely! I love to go to Hakim Aalim for treatments when I can. I'm hooked on L'oreal's Hair Spa Treatments, plus their shampoos and conditioners. Other faves are Parachute Advanced Hot Oil, Biotique's Henna Hair Pack. June 2010 I 42 I KonnecTV
Your first makeup memory? At a Kathak recital at an inter-school competition, I was playing the part of a peacock. The school had organized makeup artists who took 20 minutes to paint my face and I looked horrible! However I loved the blue green eye shadows they used on my eyes. Party vs. weekend... How different is your makeup? Quite different. I am very natural and chilled on weekends, I use lots of kohl. A spray blush and transparent lipgloss with freshlywashed hair left to air dry is what I like. For parties, I like to use Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in Charcoal, I use it as kajal and liner, and smudge it madly. For my face, I use a tiny bit of mineral powder by Bare Escentuals or L'oreal Bare Naturale Mineral Makeup. Lips are usually nude; mostly base with a liner and gloss. Beauty products we'll always find on you? My large kohl and kajal collection from practically every brand-I can't live without it. Plus, a translucent lip gloss!
