Heritage

Discover your pedigree. In 1785, the University of Georgia was chartered as America’s first state college. The city of Athens, named after the ancient Greek center of higher learning, was incorporated in 1806. Today, Athens is home to 16 neighborhoods on the National Register, including four house museums open for public tour. Guided tours: see map p. 17 for coupon. Church-Waddel-Brumby House/ Athens Welcome Center (1820) This Federal-style house is believed to be Athens’ oldest surviving residence. Its rescue from demolition and restoration in the early 1970s as a house museum and welcome center sparked the historic preservation movement in Athens. Free. Double-Barreled Cannon Greek Revival architecture, beautiful gardens, and stately trees. Roadside Wonders The world’s only DoubleBarreled Cannon, forged in Athens, was a spectacular failure in testing but is still a proud Civil War relic. On the grounds of City Hall, 301 College Ave, facing north – just in case! The Tree That Owns Itself may be the world’s oddest property holder. This 3.5-mile-long linear park is open sunrise to sunset to all types of non-motorized uses, including dogs on leashes.
