t’s finally Summer! What are you all doing this summer? We have a busy few months with our upcoming Talent Show/Summer
Camp in August. This month we decided to put together a lovely Summer Camp Guide for all you mummies who are staying in Dubai this summer. We have received thousands of emails through our Feedback forum on the site with piles of questions about what happenings are occurring this summer. Hence the guide. Ramadan is fast approaching; will you stick around this Ramadan? Stay tuned for our special Ramadan issue coming up with some special features. This month I would like to inspire you with the below beautiful poems:
Mother's Love Her love is like
an island in life's ocean, vast and wide A peaceful, quiet shelter From the wind, the rain, the tide. 'Tis bound on the north by Hope, By Patience on the West, By tender Counsel on the South And on the East by Rest. Above it like a beacon light Shine Faith, and Truth, and Prayer; And thro' the changing scenes of life I find a haven there. Author Unknown Enjoy this month’s special summer edition; you’re
"M" is for the million things she gave me, "O" means only that she's growing old, "T" is for the tears she shed to save me, "H" is for her heart of purest gold; "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining, "R" means right, and right she'll always be, Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the world to me. Howard Johnson (c. 1915)
bound to keep this close to your heart wherever you go this month!

He is kind (although sometimes moody), forgiving (although oftentimes frightening) and loving (although always stern). His stature transforms into that of a caring father the very moment I would sit on his lap – even when I became a mum myself. Most of us have had the fortune of having a Dad, a Daddy, a Father or a ‘Pop’ to fondly call. They shield us against pain and all the ‘bad’ things in this world. Even our own children may have the gift of having great fathers too. But other children are not as lucky. Perhaps out of poverty, unawareness or mere carelessness plentiful of young boys and girls fall prey to the hands of wicked beings, stripping off their innocence and right to enjoy an untroubled life. May we find our own means to be a beckon of hope to these children. And may we continue to appreciate those men who embraced fatherhood (just as much we did as mothers) and aim to make a world a much, much better place in the name of their children...

World Blood Donor Day
mother, baby & child june 2012
June 14
Blood is the river of life. We can't live without blood or else the body's organs couldn't get the oxygen and nutrients they need to survive, we couldn’t fight infections, or get rid of our own waste products. Without enough blood, we'd weaken and die. People who undergo major surgeries, victims of accidents or those who are suffering from certain lifethreatening illnesses need blood to survive. In the olden days blood donation from relatives and friends seem to fill the bill; however, as people in need of good blood grow in number and as the nature of illnesses that afflict mankind multiply by such an astounding rate, there is always that ever present need for blood donors. 26
Bloodletting, a scare or privilege? If you are a healthy individual, what prevents you from donating blood? I asked around and here are the most common answers I got: • Fear of the needle. This is not surprising. There are many macho men around who would pale and grow weak in the knees at the sight of a long needle and the thought of that needle piercing their body. But as experts say, the best way to fight our fears is to face them so… let’s face that needle! • Fear of being rejected. True, not all who want to donate blood are qualified to do so. But you will never know unless you try, right? For all you know, the fear of rejection may be unfounded! • Fear of being infected. Some people are still afraid of acquiring diseases thru the needle.

7 summer ‘musts’ It is summer again. The sweltering heat of the sun combined with the humid air makes staying outdoors (unless extremely necessary) very unpleasant. Women trying to have a baby need to be extra careful this summer. Certain activities which appear to be strictly harmless could prove to be the grim reaper of your pregnancy dream... Curious? Read on.
1
One trip you may find worth going to this season is to your physician. Have a thorough check-up to ensure that there is no medical impediment to your getting pregnant. Some
couples waste precious time trying to conceive, not knowing that they have fertility problems that need to be appropriately and immediately addressed.
2
It’s vacation time and there’s a great opportunity to reignite romance between you and your hubby. Enjoy each other’s company, take walks in the park when the sun is down and
the weather has gotten cooler. Have fun. Don’t try too hard as stress could only make conception harder to achieve.
3
If you are a working woman, and you do not have your own car, do your best to leave home early enough to avoid the harsh summer heat. Avoid crowded trains or buses where flu

and other summer-borne diseases could be easily transmitted.
4
Should you catch the flu or any summer-borne diseases, do not self-medicate. Consult your doctor for the best treatment option considering your desire to get pregnant.

It is very easy to get dehydrated with the heat and undernourished with all the activities summer brings. Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet. Now, more than ever you must get enough of the
following fertility-enhancing nutrients: vitamins D, C, B and E antioxidants, folic acid, zinc, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids.
6
Summer can also make a couch potato out of you. Lack of physical activity due to the oppressive heat and the temptation of indulging in sweet, ice cold drinks could add unwanted
pounds to your unsuspecting body. Summer can make you lazy enough to forego your exercise regimen; remember that exercise does not only make you healthy it also helps you de-stress.
7
The season can make your skin dry. Stick to your old, reliable body lotion or moisturizer. New products may contain substances that you are unknowingly allergic to. Treatment of
allergies can complicate your plan to conceive.
Of course avoiding stress, alcoholic beverages and unwanted chemicals in the air are general, practical tips that must be gravely considered by mummy hopefuls all year round. Have fun, stay in shape and enjoy summer!

getting ready | hereditary disease
Ensure your baby is free from any hereditary disease Single gene disorders are genetic conditions caused by the alteration or mutation of a specific gene. They are hereditary and therefore individuals with a family history of a single gene disorder may pass the condition onto their children. Some of the most common single gene disorders include Beta-thalassemia, Sickle Cell Anemia, Spinal muscular atrophy and Metabolic disorders to name a few. A: “Once a couple decides to have a baby, they should consult a fertility expert and request a test for the specific gene disorder running in their family. The test is called Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), also known as "embryo screening". It is the application of genetic testing on a live embryo to determine the presence of a specific gene before placing the embryo in the womb. Most women conceive without any effort. Others need extra care and even medical treatment, whilst some are simply unable to get pregnant. And having cysts and infections are the last thing a couple looking forward to the start of having a family would ever want to impede that very dream. Thing is, there are times that these ‘unwanted’ factors really do occur.

Screening for infections is vital for all couples wanting to conceive. While the couple cannot do anything to remedy whatever happened in the past especially during their youth, the infection screening process could help rule out that their fertility concerns are not due to undetected or untreated infections. It is known that in

Since infection may afflict both the husband and the wife, the couple should be screened for infection. Sadly some women become infertile due to the use of contraceptive devices in the past. One of the most common problems that threaten female fertility is blockage of the fallopian tube due to infection arising from the use of intrauterine device (IUD). Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is also another leading cause of fertility in women. Whether the fertility problem involves cysts or a healthy, clean life will already reduce the problem by a large percentage. pregnancy myths* summer special* post-term pregnancy*
Is it safe? (Revisiting pregnancy myths anew) In our earlier issues, we have discussed the outrageous superstitions around the world about pregnancy. Some sounded quite plausible, but others got us giggling too. However, since they are instilled in our cultures and beliefs, we give that degree of respect so as not to upset our elders – anyway, what’s there to lose with some extra precautions, right?
But it is not just the olden days that impose a list of prohibitions on mother, baby & child june 2012
pregnant women. In fact, our modern lifestyle are also affected by these so-called “no-no’s”. Which of them are true? Which of them aren’t? And which of them offer half-truths too? Let’s find out together, shall we?
Big pregnancy no-no #1: Wearing nail polish The chemicals being used in nail polish cannot be absorbed through the nails in any significant amounts. What is worrisome, however, is breathing the fumes from the nail polish and the nail polish remover. These contain organic solvents that may be harmful if inhaled for long periods or in enclosed spaces. Avoid applying nail polish (or removing it for that matter) in small, poorly ventilated areas.
34

Big pregnancy no-no #2: Standing in front of the microwave Non-ionising radiation from microwave ovens cannot directly affect the cells in the developing foetus. Also, it cannot affect the cells in your body. Unless you get to fit yourself inside the microwave oven and have it turned on, there is no way that it could hurt you.
Big pregnancy no-no #5: Taking out cat litter Perhaps the source of this ‘myth’ is the fear that Toxoplasmosis (a parasite with a complex life cycle) may be passed from the mother to her child. And cats may be affected with it. Based on a US research, though, toxoplasmosis complicates only about one in 10,000 pregnancies.
Big pregnancy no-no #3: Painting the baby’s room If you work in a well-ventilated room and take frequent breaks, then this shouldn’t be a cause of alarm. Of course, climbing ladders (and risking a bad fall) should be avoided. But merely occasional exposure to pain and paint thinner shouldn’t put the pregnancy at risk. Being exposed to it on a daily or almost just as often can, however. Wearing globes and well-fitting masks may reduce the danger. Also, painting over old lead-based paint (which was prevalent until the late 70s) isn’t a good idea.
Big pregnancy no-no #4: Using certain shampoos and soaps that could harm the body. Since shampoos and soaps don’t last on your skin long, the risk of having them threaten the baby

Should I or shouldn’t I panic?
(Facing post-term pregnancy with composure) Panic is never a desirable reaction to any situation in life, more so if it involves pregnancy. A calm disposition is required for pregnant women especially those who are first-time moms. To ensure safe pregnancy and delivery, your pregnancy should be carefully monitored by your physician so that abnormalities or irregularities are immediately detected and appropriate action are taken. However post-term pregnancy should not be taken lightly. This occurs when a baby has not yet been born after 42 weeks of gestation, 2 weeks beyond the normal 40. Alos, it may be a reason to induce labour...
Why is it delayed? The causes of post-term pregnancies are unknown; however certain maternal demographic factors have been related to prolonged pregnancy such as higher socio-economic class, prior post-term pregnancy, and sedentary lifestyle. Women who have gestational diabetes or history of diabetes frequently are also prone to have post-term pregnancies. According to Emirates Hospital’s Dr Kinda Dargam, “Some of these prolonged pregnancies have inaccurate dates so the expected dates of delivery are not true. But it is better to visit her doctor because some conditions may need close observation. At times, induction of labour may be elected if the placenta is not providing enough high blood pressure.” Different babies have different symptoms of postmaturity. The most common symptoms are: dry skin, overgrown nails, creases on the baby’s palms and soles of his or her feet, minimal fat, a lot of hair on the head and either a brown, green or yellow discoloration of the skin. 39

For the mother there is increased psychological stress and greater possibility of forceps-assisted or caesarean birth considering that post-term babies are generally larger than an average baby? The baby on the other hand is exposed to: • Reduced placental perfusion –Towards the end of pregnancy calcium is deposited on the walls of the blood vessels and proteins are deposited on the surface of the placenta which changes the placenta. a mother who miscalculated her last period, the baby could actually be born too early. Women that have first trimester bleeding or irregular periods are most affected by this. When a baby is thought to be post-term but is actually born too early, it is called late pre-term. Late pre-term babies may have jaundice, trouble with feeding or breathing, or difficulty maintaining a normal body temperature. “I advise to count baby movements. They should be more than 10 in a day. And do some walking,” she adds. Given all these information the best course of action for a pregnant woman is to submit herself to the care of her obstetrician who will conduct maternal monitoring to avoid complications that could harm the mom and the child.

‘Harmony’ at home Music is the language of the soul. It brings out the deepest emotion of man; it is a balm that soothes tired bodies and weary minds. It is a gift that not everyone is blessed with. My family has been inclined with music for as long as I can remember. From my parents all the way to my kids, we are a bunch of music lovers. Soniyaa Kiran Punjabi, Founder of Illuminations Well-being Center, explains its different levels of importance: “There may be several reasons why music is important for a family’s wellbeing. Musical sounds create a rhythm that helps ease stress and promote a sense of relaxation. Music brings people together as it can be interactive as it may facilitate dancing or playing an instrument. Music can be hypnotic in a sense as soft soothing music can alter the brain wave and help people go deeper into the core of their being. People connect with music as there is one for every occasion and every emotion.”

Little did we know that it can actually be coined as ‘therapeutic!’ “It is therapeutic to play musical instruments as it stimulates their sense of co-ordination and creativity. It is a beautiful means through which people can express themselves and create pieces that come from a place of inspiration. It helps promote self confidence and esteem,” Punjabi adds. Love for music can be taught. Parents can teach their children to appreciate music and hone their talents. You may not be a great singer but there is music in your soul just waiting to be unleashed. You can nurture your child’s musical development by being involved. Parents can become role models for their children by taking music lessons with them or by making music together. Lastly, Punjabi heartens parents to bring out the musicians in their kids. “I would encourage parents to allot some ‘music time’ for the family, as it would create a great opportunity to become closer as a family and strengthen the bond between members. It encourages family members to express themselves and be who they are in a safe and secure environment,” she says. Their parents are the children’s partner in progress and should encourage their children to strive for excellence but should not push them to perfection. Parents should help turn mistakes into opportunities for learning. And when you have to give praise, be sincere, specific, generous and discreet.

the new family | teaching independence
They’re no longer babies… (Raising independent kids)
Parents, particularly first timers, tend to be overprotective of their child. They want to provide the precious baby with all the good things of life and more importantly, to save them from the evils of this world. If only parents can keep their child in a safety bubble where they can grow, play, rest and learn with utmost security, I suppose they would. And who can blame them? As parents, our role is to also teach our children to know right from wrong, consideration and respect for others and how to make the most of their talents and teach them how to continually enlarge their horizon so that they need not be afraid to face the outside world. Stroke: a tyrant to its victims, young and old
Carlos, a highly technical individual, had his first stroke when he was 56 years old; the infarct was on the left side of his brain and it affected his speech as well as his ability to read and write. It happened at the crack of dawn, he was rushed to the Emergency Unit of the nearest hospital and he was forthwith brought to the ICU. After months of therapy and self-will, Carlos was able to walk as though he didn’t suffer from a massive stroke. But his ability to write and do calculations did not return‌ He could still sign his name, but that is all about it. the new family • Quit smoking • Control blood pressure • Healthy diet and regular exercise • Take cholesterol-lowering drugs when necessary • Opening up blocked arteries • Taking drugs that reduce blood clotting • Taking homocysteine with vitamins A person at high risk of stroke can reduce the risk by 75 percent by adhering to the above preventive measures. Smoking is the most important risk factor for stroke because it is completely curable. A person who stops smoking cuts his risk of having a stroke by half within a period of six months! The other measures involve the use of medicines and even surgical procedures that are quite expensive. It is believed that exercise can also prevent stroke since it has been proven to reduce the incidence of heart attacks, increase HDL (the good cholesterol in the body) and improve insulin and diabetes resistance. When at the workplace, Dr Aslani says, “Studies suggest that a brief workplace stress management intervention can produce clinically significant reductions in BP and improve emotional health among hypertensive Employees and also decrease the risk of stroke. Implications are that such interventions may produce a healthier and more productive Workforce, enhancing
Emirate Hospital’s Dr Ali Aslani shares the most common factors of stroke in the UAE and offered scenarios for each: High blood pressure is the single most important risk factor for stroke and it also plays a significant role in the development of heart attacks. Type 2 diabetes is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. The incidence of type 2 diabetes is increasing globally and the UAE has one of the highest rates (18.7 percent). Having diabetes doubles the risk for cardiovascular disease and uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk of premature CVD. In pre-menopausal women, diabetes cancels out the protective effect of estrogens and their risk of heart disease rises significantly. Smoking risk is significantly high in young and heavy smokers and in woman. Passive smoking is also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Abnormal blood lipids - high levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50 percent and regular physical activity is known to increases life span. A middle-aged woman doing less than one hour of exercise per week doubles her risk of dying from a cardiovascular event compared to a physically active woman of the same age. Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease as it predisposes to diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis, all of which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. A diet high in saturated fat also increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Though moderate alcohol intake is supposedly beneficial for heart health, excessive alcohol can damage the heart muscle.
performance and reducing losses to the decline, illness, and premature mortality.” After all has been said and done. It is quite obvious that living a healthy life is the key to avoiding stroke as well as the other dreaded diseases. First sun protection products! Trust a product that midwives trust! With its olive oil and milk proteins, the Sanosan Baby sun protection range is highly recommended by midwives. All formulations have been dermatologically tested for skin tolerance and carefully selected with mostly natural ingredients. As a baby skin is a lot more sensitive, it is essential to choose the right sunscreen for them – which has to have an SPF of at least 30! Sanosan products meet this requirement plus the following characteristics: no scents or preservatives, a combination of mineral and chemical SPFs (so as to provide UVA protection) and extra water-resistance. Find them at Al Manarah Pharmacy.
First swimming accessory! Being able to swim is very important for children in exploring new experiences and spending memorable time with friends. And for them to establish a lifelong positive feeling with water, baby swimming is very much suggested by experts. Freds Swim’s Swimtrainer “Classic” offers a guide as the children masters the perfect leg movement since the legs are the motor for motion in the water. Learning this has to come first before the use of arms and breathing its inflatable compartments and stable, slipfree safety belt. Meredith was on her early twenties when she delivered her baby prematurely. When she found out that she was pregnant, she showed a brave face but was deeply worried – is she ready for this? Her OB-GYN specialist said that there is a great chance for her child to be delivered prematurely and true enough, she had labour pains and finally delivered through caesarean section on the 7th month of her pregnancy. It almost broke her and her husband’s hearts to see their daughter, so tiny with so many tubes and needles attached to her doll-like body. It was only years later that her father confessed his fear that his granddaughter might not survive at all! During pregnancy,

When there were tinges of stress inside the womb, she’d play soothing music and – at times – would sing herself. She believes continuing this practice whilst her baby was still in the NICU helped the fragile angel to survive this tough ordeal.
Helping save a preemie Such conviction such as hers is now supported by studies which show that merely talking to the newborn helps build language, vocabulary and early stimulation of premature babies. This leads to good performance in social and learning environments. The bond between mother and child is something that cannot be defined nor explained. It just exists. And this bond helps nurture the child to grow into a healthy, happy child. This is true for full term babies and preemies as well. Studies show that the newborn baby, particularly the premature one, have a distinct relationship with sounds and music. It is also known that newborns prefer the female voices over the male voices and prefer their mother’s voice over other women’s voice. Premature babies in the neonatal intensive care unit have been known to turn to the direction of their mothers’ voice! How wonderful it is then when the mom speaks to and sings to her child! Some of the more commonly used stimulation in the NICU includes lullabies, womb sound music as well as the mother’s speaking and singing voice. Research has shown that high pitches tend to create tension or excitement while low pitches (such as the mom’s soft, soothing voice) tend to relax the child. All these contribute to the baby’s
Simulation or MSS) led to an overall lower chance of acquiring cardio-respiratory related cases. Researchers found that premature babies are less likely to stop breathing or have their heart rate slow dangerously when listening to recordings of their mother’s voice and heartbeat. Maternal voice and heartbeat sounds were recorded individually for 14 preterm infants and were then played four times per a 24-hour period through an audio system installed in the infants’ beds. The infants experienced fewer cardio respiratory events when they heard the maternal sounds, compared to routine hospital sounds and noises. Although the study was small, its authors note that it provides preliminary evidence that premature infants show shortterm improvements in physiological stability when listening to maternal sounds. It is a blessing that scientific research on ways to improve development of premature babies is a continuing process. The effect of music and sound, particularly the mother’s voice on the development of premature babies is a much later development and has helped a lot of preemies develop normally sans medication. Truly, the best things in life are free. A loving mother’s soothing voice provides the child with a feeling of comfort that no expensive apparatus can ever replace. Coupled with the mother’s tender touch, a child will grow secure under a mantle of love and affection.
The miracle of a mum’s voice A research led by Amir Lahav, Director of the Neonatal Research Lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital showed how exposing a premature baby to an audio recording of the mother’s heartbeat and voice (a method called Maternal Sound

Determining autism from the first year Parents long for a healthy, normal child. First time parents are understandably excited and at the same time anxious about how their first child will turn out to be. You can’t fault them for checking the baby out: ten fingers, ten toes, two hands and two feet. To find out that their precious child is not going to grow up the way they dreamed he or she would gives a pain like no other. It is believed that autism presents itself during the first three years of a person's life. Autism is a wide spectrum disorder, meaning to say no two people with autism will exhibit exactly the same signs, with the same intensity. Kids with autism act in unusual ways. They flap their hands, say certain words over and over, they scream and have temper tantrums. They live in a world of their own.
Early signs “Autism involves a variety of developmental delays, so keeping a close eye on when— or if—your child is hitting the key social, emotional, and cognitive milestones is an effective way to spot the problem early on. While developmental delays don’t automatically point to autism, they may indicate a heightened risk,” reiterates specialist paediatrician Dr Lali Pataridze. Other characteristics are also found in children with autism; the presence of these signs should ring the warning bells for parents and significant

Fear not, be brave for your child If you suspect that your child is under the spectrum, do not allow your fear to paralyse you from seeking help and early intervention. Seek help from a psychologist, a psychiatrist or a developmental paediatrician who specialises in the early detection of developmental disabilities. There is evidence that at age two, it is possible to determine whether a child has autism or is just having some developmental delays. There are lots of assessors who are outstanding in their field but there are still some with a lot to learn. Dr Pataridze says, “If your child is developmentally delayed, or if you’ve observed red flags for autism such as those listed above, schedule an appointment with your paediatrician right away. It’s a good idea to have your child screened by a doctor even if he or she is hitting the developmental milestones on schedule. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children receive routine developmental screenings, as well as specific screenings for autism at 9, 18, and 30 months of age.” The experience of the assessor is very important; if you are not satisfied with the assessment given to your child; do not hesitate to go elsewhere. Remember that correct assessment will result to the right treatment of your child.

During the days of our grandparents, discipline tends to be imposed on a gender-specific way. In other words, there was a different set of rules for boys and another one for girls. Generally, discipline for boys was a bit stricter compared to that of girls since boys are believed to be more aggressive and rowdy and girls, sweeter, more sensitive and emotional. Even now, some families have a different set of rules for boys and girls. Sons and daughters were deemed good boys and good girls if they toe the line and follow parental instructions to the letter.

mother, baby & child june 2012
It’s cute for the first few months that your baby has been doing it‌ But then it starts to feel awkward once the habit lingers. Thumb sucking is usually related to the child’s feeling of hunger, shyness, loneliness or even boredom. Thumb sucking by children less than one year old is considered normal and acceptable. It causes the salivary gland to pour out its content, thus moistening the mouth and even aiding in digestion. The deed comforts the irritable child and helps put him to sleep. However, that not all children older than one year do this.

• Let her know that you love her unconditionally and that you want to help her out of concern for her well-being. • Show her with a mirror what sucking is doing to the teeth, and point out calluses or crooked fingers that are related to the habit. • Discuss any speech problems that may make it hard for others to understand her. • Talk about the unhealthy aspects of putting a finger or thumb with “germs” on it into the mouth. • Discuss hurtful comments made by others about the sucking behaviour.

(How to discipline your grade schooler)
Everyone has a unique personality, children included. Thus, an effective discipline for Jane may not work for Kate. Parents should be able to discern the best discipline method for their children but family values, morals and guidelines are fixed and non-negotiable. Young children all the way to pre-adolescents are quite challenging to discipline; because they are now exposed to outside influences and sometimes, peer pressure have a stronger impact on them. However, it will be easier to discipline your child if he or she is no stranger to parental guidance even 80
as a very young child. Raising a child properly requires making decisions, from the simple, ordinary matters to earth shaking concerns. They’re older now Parents should remember that disciplining them require a different approach compared to disciplining a toddler or preschooler. Their interests and concerns are now more complex and the people they meet on a day-to-day basis are more varied. In addition, the school has greater demands on them, both academically and socially. To successfully discipline your

For example taking away access to a video game only works if the child is really into that video game,” she explains. Many more concerns will crop up as days pass by. No parent can make a list of all the things that need to be taught their children, and refer to this list when problems arise. Don’t let them fall prey... It is a highly sensitive topic that not many of us are comfortable to talk about amongst ourselves, more so with our children. But Paedophilia is a condition all of us must be aware of for the sake of our children’s safety and overall wellbeing. Some parents may think it is too early to even give their kids a hint of what it is or how to address when they find themselves in such a situation. We have asked Zahra Hamirani, Esq., Founder of The Blossom Nursery and a US-trained lawyer admitted to the New York Bar, to better guide us in tackling this touchy subject. She has practiced in domestic violence and child abuse cases and is n advocate for the rights of children.
World Day Against Child Labour June 12
Q: How is the topic of paedophilia relevant in our world today? A: “Child protection is an often-overlooked topic and awareness of this must be raised. Thank you for the questions, which deal with the sensitive topic of paedophiles – those who prey upon children. Paedophilia is deemed a mental disorder and the actions that result from this often are both illegal – considered child abuse and very damaging to children with lifelong repercussions for a family.”
Q: How do parents and the local community address this prevailing oppression (sometimes from the internet itself)? A: “The Dubai Police have launched a campaign to prevent abuse of children under the theme ‘Violence against the innocent’, which is being organized by the General mother, baby & child june 2012
Department of Community Service and the General Department of Criminal Investigation of the Dubai Police in coordination with other 15 government and private institutions. While there are no official statistics of abuse in the UAE, there are a number of initiatives to help prevent it or create further awareness. There are places online where you can find 84

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
When in public, how do parents address (when all else fails - raising voice, ignoring, threatening to be reprimanded) a toddler have a bad case of temper tantrums?
MOTHER’S POINT OF VIEW “It all depends on the training on the child. Before my daughter could throw into a big fit, I look at her in the eye and say: ‘Do you want Mum to get angry?’ And she will behave! Haha! Maybe she sees thinks I’m the Hulk... But sometimes when she just won’t stop fidgeting, we will tell her if she does not stop her tantrums, we will go home pronto. It really depends on what’s driving the tantrum.” Submitted by Jack Castro “Kids throwing tantrums in public could be the most embarrassing thing to happen and of course, will happen when you least expect it and at the exact place where tantrums are the worst thing that could happen. As a mother of two, I have learned about this the hard way, by going through it nearly everywhere, restaurants, libraries, the least embarrassment is at the mall though, thanks for the busy audience. I ended up with a strategy, when the tantrum starts. Rule number one: do not stand against it, no screaming, shouting or giving your child orders. Tolerate your child’s acts with patience like nothing is happening, then quietly mention a magical word to his or her ears, something like games, juice, ice cream, that special thing that will reach him or her no matter what. Sometimes it could be just easier and all what the child need is a hug, and you to tell him that everything is ok. Always remember that kids are in a continuous search for care and attention, and sometimes this is their only way to drag more attention. My only advice is not to be affected with these tantrums, stay calm and always find a way to

distract your child.”
in focus: child SPECIALIST’S POINT OF VIEW “Dealing with a temper tantrum in public needs to happen well before the toddler leaves home for the day. Parents need to prepare their child in advance of them leaving the house by telling them their expectations of behaviour. This may include a clear description of the consequences for misbehaviour. This not only helps the child to understand and prepare for the situation but also gives the parents confidence of what they will do in the event of misbehaviour. When the child is behaving in a desirable manner then parents need to give praise. This will encourage the child to continue behaving in this manner. If the child is rewarded with attention for behaving well then behaving well becomes desirable. If the child misbehaves then the parent needs to swiftly act. Depending on the level of misbehaviour this may involve immediately enacting the consequence that they warned the child of before leaving the house or giving a warning of this consequence. The strategy that is used by the parent to manage the misbehaviour is best chosen after analysing the cause of the child’s misbehaviour and what maintains it. If a temper tantrum occurs as a means of gaining the parents attention then rewarding good behaviour with attention and ignoring misbehaviour may be appropriate. If the temper tantrum occurs as a result of being refused a desired toy or other item then quite time or time out in the car may be appropriate.” Dr Jessica Lee Clinical Psychologist Infinity – The Family Clinic 04 394 8994

Ask Now! Q: “My son is usually a very friendly and happy child but his recent behaviour is disturbing me. Last week I had gone with him for an entry test into the nursery. He became very aggressive and wasn’t ready to leave me and enter the class. He cried and screamed. There were many other children and most were sitting calmly. Even now, he is not willing to go to school as the classes start in September. I just want to know if this attitude is normal as maybe he does not want to be without me and what should I do to ease his fear?” Submitted by Mummy Sadia 92
in focus: child A: “It’s unclear why your child has some anxiety about separating from you; perhaps he is worried that something will happen to you if you are apart, perhaps he is worried about his own safety or health if you leave him. Most children feel some anxiety when they are first asked to separate from a parent. The good news is that if the child stays in the situation without the parent they start to learn that the things they are fearing do not in fact happen (and instead they often have a very good time). You might like to start by separating from your son for a short period of time in a mildly anxiety provoking situation and then building up from there with increasing periods of time. If possible it might be an idea to visit the school a number of times before classes start. You might also try reading books about nursery and talking about all the fun activities that he will do as well as how you will drop him off but you will also pick him up again. Even driving past the school and waving and saying hello to it might make him feel more familiar with it.”

In 2011, we have visited more than 40 charities across four countries delivering over 15,000 books and toys to children in need. Thanks to you, together we have brought thousands of smiles to their faces. Perhaps your children have outgrown some of their favorite toys. Maybe there are some toys or books that were never among their favorites and aren't likely to be missed. Or, like some families, perhaps you and your kids have made it a birthday tradition to say farewell to a handful of yesterday's toys and books to make room for the new ones. Today early learning centre can help you make the best use of your used toys and books by helping you to DONATE them to children in need! Toy donations mean a less fortunate child has a warm teddy bear to snuggle up with at bedtime, a puzzle to enjoy on a hot afternoon, a ball to practice his football skills with in the park. Donating new and used toys and books is free, and sure to bring big smiles to the faces of little ones in your community. Donate used or new toys and books to charity by visiting

The ‘balancing act’: Attaining a balanced mind, body and soul through motherhood Just when you thought all the tasks to maintain a harmonious home and keep each member of the family in tiptop shape is all to it, you’d find out that striking an ideal balance as a mother ought to come from within. Now it may take an extra amount of effort for a beginner, but Pranic Healing and Yoga is set to vitalise your entire system – getting you ready for any challenge being a mum may pose.

Yoga, on the other hand, was developed from being initially designed for young men to remove excess energy before meditation into a practice for all. It gives a certain awareness of one’s body, stretches the muscles and is a gentle workout for mind, body and soul too... She also explains how these two practices

During Pregnancy
• Pranic healing or general energy work during pregnancy is not advised. The mother’s energy shifts and changes while she is with child to support the growing foetus, thus it is not wise to channel massive amounts of prana into the body especially into the lower chakras that drastically change size and proportion during pregnancy. An experienced practitioner can continue practicing energy healing in a gentle way in the prenatal phase because she is less exposed to congestion hence someone who has never tried energy healing before is not advised to start especially in the first trimester. • As in all sports, it is advised to practice prenatal Yoga only if you have been a regular yoga fan before pregnancy which is not considered as a good time to start. Some yoga asana are potentially dangerous for pregnant women, per example positions that demand lying on your back might block the blood flow to the uterus thus cause miscarriage. It is inevitable to note that a Yoga teacher is neither a prenatal caregiver nor a medical expert and therefore cannot determine, if a pregnant lady is unease during the session, whether her symptoms are dangerous or not. • On a brighter side, for those who have been practicing yoga before and during pregnancy, this practice may help with the breathing, with widening the pelvis and strengthening the legs as well as stretching essential muscles needed for delivery.

Behind these mumtrepreneurs... are THEIR MEN There is a saying that goes: “Behind every great man is a woman.” And it’s more often true than not, is it? That men who lived with immense purpose, whether the world stops to take notice or not, are those whose passion is further ignited by the women in their lives. But let us not forget those who, aside from pursuing their dreams, are also their wives’ greatest supporter and biggest fan as they follow their own... Most, if not all, mumtrepreneurs have nothing

We were enjoying the beautiful day when suddenly my son Abdel Rahman who is 3 years old call me and said: “Mummy, the slide is so fun!” while laughing hilariously! I couldn’t stop laughing too. His daddy found this just as funny until... We saw that my son is already peeing his pants! He got very excited and that is the very reason why my two boys had burst out laughing! “See Mummy, you made me laugh too hard it may me pee,” he teased. He is just so cute, trying to playfully give the blame. Expats like us in the UAE have to have a time to slow down... As they are in separate beds that were just moved side-to-side, Charm was already trying a little too hard to please her sister when Chloe said, “Can you take off this bar so you can hug me properly?” Charm retorted: “I’m not a fairy to grant all mother, baby & child june 2012

Works beautifully. Just like Mum. “My baby is suffering from colic, fussing and sucking in air when he feeds”, mums told us. So here’s our closer to nature anti-colic plus bottle and teat system. The anti-colic valve and tube is designed to improve air flow during feeding for a smoother feed and a reduction of air ingested. For extra reassurance, the tube inside the bottle turns red if the milk temperature is too hot. And our bottles and teats are now BPA free for total reassurance.
The unique soft touch silicone teat is specially designed to mimic the flex, feel and movement of a mum’s breast during feeding. Making it easier to combine breast and bottle feeding. They amaze. They entertain... And dolphins do heal! Have you gone to a dolphin show with your kids? You sure have noticed their eyes beaming with excitement. With every trick, they are bedazzled as well as in awe. Did you begin to feel that immense joy yourself? Somehow there is that feeling of being transported back to your childhood days, isn’t it? Back to those days when simple things give you delight. Have you gone to an adventure and be around a dolphin or two in the water? The sight of them up close is just magical. At that moment, you are equals. 126
mama me-time
Aside from the entertainment value that these magnificent creatures give us, science has proven that they possess this healing property simply by having them around humans. “It has been well documented that people experience miraculous and spontaneous healings when around dolphins,” says holistic coach Elise Bou Malham. “These amazing creatures are known for their joyful, soothing energy they project and for their kind nature which has incited many to study their healing capacities,” she continues Founder of Illuminations Well-Being Center, Soniyaa Kiran Punjabi, agrees: “Dolphins have healing properties. That is why when people are in their presence, they feel lighter and more energised. The vibrate energies on a different frequency.” The presence of dolphins helps through their ultrasonic wave production and through the connection between our electromagnetic field and theirs which provide a positive energy transfer. Scientific studies show the following effects of being exposed, in close proximity or in an interaction with dolphins: • Chronic patients claim that their pain levels automatically decrease and the body starts healing. • Dramatically reduces stress and alleviates depression • Helps people with Down’s Syndrome, autism, ADD, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injuries • Boosts the production of infection fighting T-cells • Stimulates the production of endorphins and hormones • Aids cancer patients Do people have to be in the water with the dolphins to experience its therapeutic benefits? As water is an excellent conductor, a positively charged water can accelerate the healing tremendously. Dolphin healing practitioners submerge themselves and their clients in the sea or the pool with the dolphins to receive an assisted healing and compound the capacity of the practice. Whilst Soniyaa believes that one has to be physically around dolphins to acquire the positive energy they emit, Elise believes that people who do not have access to these aquatic mammals can benefit from their sounds. “Sound is a fundamental part of life , thus playing a sound recording of sea and dolphin sounds is highly therapeutic especially when in meditative state and while visualising swimming with dolphins simply because the brain doesn’t not recognise the it can achieve’,” she explains. So the next time you and your family take that trip to the dolphin show or dolphin adventure destination, take it as an opportunity to be more in tune with yourself and grasp the positive energies as much as you can!

Eco Zen Health Tip
Eco-friendly water works • Rather than drinking sparkling water, drink still water instead. This is because still water digests much easier – avoiding bloating and the development of cellulites. • To make plain water taste more inviting, you can add some fresh lemon or lime juice rather than a sugar-filled cordial. • It is easier to drink water at room temperature than when chilled. • You can opt to filter your tap at home to make it taste better and balance the mineral content. It is more eco-friendly than buying bottled water. • Mild dehydration can make you feel dizzy, weak and more prone to headaches. Rehydrate and drink at least eight glasses of water (each containing 200 ml/7fl oz) every day.

Mind & Body Tip Massage during pregnancy
Many expectant mums will find it very difficult to lie on the stomach for any period of time by the fourth month of pregnancy. And, generally, it isn’t a wise idea to lay flat on your back during the latter part as this may make you feel light headed and the weight of the foetus can restrict the circulation and cause a tingling sensation in the legs. With the proper position and a well-trained therapist, a massage is useful for the following reasons: • Massaging the legs counteract the effects of oedema, varicose veins and tiredness. The legs and the arms may be treated with your body in a semi-supine position or sitting in a comfortable chair. • You can be seated, leading forward with cushions for support to have you back massaged. • For a variety of ethical reasons, however, massaging the abdomen is not a good idea. The most a therapist can do is apply oil with light effleurage strokes. Also, be clear and concise with your instructions! Source: The Essential Guide to Holistic and Complementary

he reason we are so receptive to music is simply because we are made of it as Dr. Candace Pert says:” Even DNA has its own melody. The musical nature of nuclear matter from atoms to galaxies is now recognized by official science.” Ambient music should be an essential part
of a family’s life since it brings the following benefits: • Reducing stress level through balancing the hormones. • Enhancing communication between family members. • Keeping the physical frequencies healthy • Music helps with the development of Motor Skills. • Easing the perception of Chronic pain • Setting a positive mood around the household Music therapists all around the world acknowledge the many benefits of music education whether it is playing an instrument or engaging in therapeutic voice work. Members of the family, adults and youngsters are advised to consider taking part in musical routines for the following reasons: • Early musical training helps develop parts of the brain responsible for languages and reasoning. • Playing music helps develop a thinking pattern which is linked to mathematical analysis. • Music students have been proven to be exceptional problem solvers thanks to increased imagination capacity. • Music education forms an inter-cultural bridge which enhances empathy and compassion for other races and cultures. • Music studies help with the development of team-work playing skills.

But when we hear about a facility looking after children with special needs at the brink of shutting down, are we giving the same degree of concern? Do we even wonder why it is going out of business? Or think how you can help stop the impending closure? Amelie Campsey did... Moreover, she had gone through lengths to make a difference. Family and professional life had always been what kept her busy. Married to an Englishman and blessed with a three-year-old son Theo, the half-Moroccan and halfFrench lass is now leading a business development team of a French multinational company. Far back in her early teenage years, she had involved herself into charity missions, fund-raising events benefiting orphanages in East Africa and Nepal and educational programs in Sikkim, India. “It is only when I joined the Rotary Club of Jumeirah, an organisation focusing on community service that I realised how crucial it was to work on continuity and follow up of charity actions. I then, through and thanks to mother, baby & child june 2012
Rotary Club, discovered SENSES, which needed serious and sustainable support,” she says SENSES, the only residential and day care centre for special needs in the community, welcomes children whose families are not able to cope with their condition either financially or emotionally. Forty-three of the eighty-six children live in the centre and benefit from a round-the-clock care. “When I visited the centre for the first time and met

mama me-time all these ‘extra-ordinary’ children, it just came naturally to me: I had to help. The dedication and passion of each staff member, led by the wonderful Dr Lina, kept me thinking: How can this centre be about to close down due to insufficient funds? How can this centre be located in the most prestigious areas of Dubai and not be able to survive? I simply couldn’t accept this,” continues Amelie. That is when she began to appreciate the costs that keeping such a facility entail. The staff of sixty-five ought to be paid for their services. The equipments have to be updated and maintained. Medical check-ups with specialists come with fees. A healthy diet, especially for children, requires only the best of ingredients (which, of course, one has to buy). She adds. “Shocking fact: Some kids could have to take medicine costing up to AED 10,000 per month!” Since then, Amelie has given 100 percent commitment and engagement to SENSES. Although solicited for various social & environmental projects, international and local initiatives mainly as a Director of Community Service for the Rotary Club of Jumeirah, she has given most of her time in the service of these “extraordinary” children at SENSES. Amelie and the team behind the SENSES Residential and Day Care for Special Needs did not just stop at their tracks and offer concern to these children – they actually given the most important gifts these young ones can ever have: TIME, EFFORT AND CARE. Amelie believes that everyone, even mums who have got their arms full, can follow their lead: “A drop in the ocean can make a difference, so every individual action is worth it. Being busy with motherhood and everyday life usually means we are blessed enough to give back to the community. Yes, it could be quite challenging to mingle between work, children and a charitable project…But it is absolutely worth it. For the cause, of course, but also for yourself and your family: What a better role

Habiba Al Marashi A true leader is a visionary. She feels the pulse of the future in her fingertips. She has enough courage to make decisions even when they seem unpopular at the time and is humble enough to stay at the background when the accolades and praises come pouring in. She can see a vast, magnificent garden when others can only see a tiny shrub; she can envision a barren land when the rest of the world sees nothing but a lush, prosperous piece of earth. She is not afraid to work hard; she could be a tenacious and hard-hitting negotiator yet a loving, tender wife and mother who cares for her family with all her heart and soul. She is a trendsetter, a go getter, a dreamer, a worker… Most of all she does not rest on her laurels but continues to work, harder and more passionately, to further her cause of saving the environment. One such magnificent woman is named ‘Habiba’.
H
abiba Al Marashi is the founding member of the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).
Begun in 1991 with just 12 members, EEG, a non-government organisation devoted to protecting the environment through the means of education, action programs and community involvement, now has more than one thousand two hundred members (individuals, corporate groups, schools, colleges & universities, government and international institutions). Since its inception in 1991, the EEG has organised a variety of public education foray and community-based activities aimed at increasing social awareness on day day-to-activities that impact on the environment. EEG is at the forefront of Recycling Campaigns and Clean up Drives. EEG’s recycling campaign covers paper, can, battery cell and mobile phones. Since the 1990s EEG has recycled 9,115,782 kg of paper; from January to Sept 2011 it has collected 161,908 kg of aluminium cans (mostly from Dubai); and from 2006 till September 2011, 5,388 kg of battery cells. EEG has also teamed up with Nokia and since the 2000s till late 2011 it has collected and turned over to Nokia (for recycling into new

Shanghai Chic, Ibn Battuta Gate Upon entering the Ibn Battuta Gate, I was totally bedazzled by the intricate designs to depict the life and times of the traveler Ibn Battuta. The hotel itself is a beauty – Moroccan in its entirety, with themed floors based on the travels of the iconic voyager. China is one of his destinations, and Shanghai Chic must be yours too! The interior design of the restaurant fits every occasion… Whether you are in an intimate date with your hubby, out for an Asian cuisine fix with friends or even with the whole family, there is certainly a spot for you. The high ceiling is being complemented by long stemmed lamps. As we were scanning the menu, we were surprised at how reasonable the prices are especially in such a ‘chic’ place. The highlights of our main course were the signature Wasabi Prawns (a signature dish of the chef), Crispy Peking Duck (complete with pancakes, pickle veggies and sweet Hoi Sin sauce) and the Barbecue Pork Ribs (succulent to the bone). Do not, and I repeat DO NOT, leave with trying their desserts. Whilst we were there, we had Taro Puffs and Fried Ice Cream. Needless to say not only were the kids the only ones who enjoyed this part of the experience, we adults sure did too! Definitely worth going even when you’re coming from the other part of Dubai or farther!

g n i n i D Ashiana, Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel & Towers It is not award-winning for nothing – that I have proven myself. For someone whose Indian cuisine know-how is limited kebabs, chapattis and biryanis, Ashiana really has been a revelation. The restaurant itself gives off this elegant atmosphere, with stately columns, lovely paintings and murals and dim lighting. The service from the staff had that distinct and genuine warmth, even offering tidbits of information about each dish being served which we found very useful as first timers. A live band playing traditional Indian music made our experience even more special. The sitar player entices us through the instrumentals, as well as the percussions and keyboard. The vocalist entertained the buzzing crowd with his soothing voice and renditions of Indian melodies. We truly savoured every dish – over 10 of them! It is really tough to pick our favourites. But let’s see... For starters, the juicy lamb kebab was the total knockout – the best I’ve had. For the main course, the Tandoori Lahsuni Jheenga (Jumbo prawns marinated in carom, brown garlic and spiced yoghurt), Subz Nizam (Stir-fried vegetables) and Saunfiya Murgh Biryani (Basmati rice with chicken) really sealed the deal. For desserts, I’d say it was the Angoori Rasmalai (cow’s milk dumplings poached in saffron and cardamom flavoured milk) and the Pista Kulfi (Indian ice cream flavoured with a hint of pistachio). Signature Ashiana cocktails are also available. For that night, I had their Tall & Dandy mix which gave a kick in the taste buds. The dinner was a complete thrill... We felt like a Maharaja!
Top tip:
You don’t have to be a ‘spicy eater’ to enjoy their flavours. Simply request a mildly spicy version of your chosen dish. Ashiana definitely offers a great cultural trip for the family!

Spas Safar Spa, Ibn Battuta Gate Stressed out and feeling beat up from strenuous activities at home and at work? It’s time to rest your mind and allow your body to relax and rejuvenate at the Safar Spa, Ibn Battuta Gate. The hotel in itself offers a calming feel, a feast for the eyes. As you reach the level where the spa, wellness and pool area are located, an inviting sense of tranquillity engulfed my psyche. Not long since I got there I was invited to the treatment room, passing by a hall of modern and cultural elements (white vertical lights on the wall, candle on the opposite side, abstract art piece and woven curtain). Once inside the room – which was very chic and modest in size - the therapist kindly instructed me to change into my treatment outfit and a few moments to get in tuned to the place. The therapy of choice was the Deep Tissue Massage which was a combination of shiatsu, Swedish massage and foot reflexology techniques. Generally, it is a remedial sports massage which focuses on big muscle groups and excellent for tired and overworked muscles. And address my tensed shoulders, back and soles it did. The pressure was hard enough to untangle the knots but not too hard for it to feel uncomfortable. The scalp and foot massage were both worth noting as I rarely snooze during a review...

book-worm me Tales from Shakespeare Mary & Charles Lamb
The younger generation and adults alike would find the siblings’ retelling of twenty of Shakespeare’s timeless especially for children, it actually captivates all ages with Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew, As You Like It and more... Not that Shakespeare’s writing isn’t a masterpiece in every way, but Mary & Charles Lamb had simplified the plot and language whilst incorporating some of the original speeches. Some of the interpretations offer an interesting peek and reflection of the time when the two authors have collaborated in making such a wonderful compilation. What is left when the puzzling rhymes of olden days and taxing requirement for comprehension? Twenty beautiful stories that will charm its way to your heart!
The Secret Letters of the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari Robin Sharma
We sure are old enough to be reminded of the basic values we as morally-upright beings should possess, or are we? The story is about a man named Jonathan Laundry – an industrious automobile designer who couldn’t seem to strike the balance between his work and personal life. That was until his cousin Julian prodded him to travel around the world. In each stop, he was to collect talismans – each teaching him lessons that could make him save his family whilst being successful. And these talismans taught him the following: the power of authenticity, embrace your fears, live with kindness, make small daily progress, choose your influences well, life’s simplest pleasures are life’s greatest joys, the purpose of life is to love, stand for something bigger than yourself and to lead your best life, do your best work... 153
