Welcome To the July issue of On Our Doorstep Summer has officially begun - apparently! The weather has definitely not be on our side during recent weeks. Baldock's Big Lunch felt the wrath of the rain albeit a fairly light shower. Fortunately, despite the weather the turnout didn't disappoint and the food was excellent as always. Fortunately for us the rain stayed at bay last weekend just long enough for us to celebrate our youngest turning 10. With twenty six sugar-hyped kids and a 30' bouncy slide in our back garden - we needed as much help as we could get! June as been an exciting month with all the birthdays and the start of the Euro’s, as I'm writing this England are through to the last sixteen. Hopefully they will produce the goods on Monday against Iceland and make the nation proud. Very nice to see the England rugby squad beat Australia 44-40 in final Test to complete series whitewash. Talk of the town(and the rest of the world) has been the EU referendum. The biggest vote of our lives and no matter what your opinion the EU referendum will be bringing forward a future of change. The greatly anticipated Farr Festival returns to Bygrave woods in July for a long weekend of music and entertainment, that is ever growing in popularity with festival goers travelling from all over Europe for the event. Luckily for us it's ‘On Our Doorstep’, if you haven't been before you don't know what you're missing and if you have you'll know exactly what all the fuss is about!

Get in tou

c info@onourdo Please be extra vigilant at the orstepbaldock h .co.uk moment as there has been a spate of burglaries in Baldock over the past few weeks. We have also heard that several people have also had their vehicles damaged in the area, so if you have seen anything suspicious do not hesitate to report it to the police and hopefully normal service can resume once again. On that note, if you're looking to upgrade your home security I personally cannot recommend Infinite IT & Security highly enough, really nice knowledgeable guys who can advise you on all your needs. You can find their details on page 25. Enjoy your July

News from Sandon JMI School The seeds from space grew and were keenly observed by the children who were able to use their mathema cal skills to input data, convert data to percentages and record their findings. The children thought up ques ons and wondered if both packets had come from space? We recently entered a swimming Gala at Freman College where we swim every week. I am delighted to report that we beat all the other teams there and the children proudly brought home the trophy. We believe that swimming is a life skill and con nue to provide it weekly for all our junior pupils. Inevitably this has helped us to be able to put out such a strong team. Not all our pupils can afford to pay for swimming lessons outside school so swimming with their peers fulfils this and pupils encourage each other. Parents are also happy for lessons to take place in school as it doesn't use up their valuable weekend me together. Our Summer Concert is due to take place on Wednesday 13th July. This event is a real celebra on of the children's musical abili es and for the grand finale the whole school are singing two songs on our outdoor stage so we are praying for good weather. Music unlocks crea vity it develops not only concentra on but also social skills and self-confidence. Most of the pupils here at Sandon learn a musical instrument and we facilitate this by paying for our Year 3 to learn the trombone each week. This enables children to play as a group and work as a team. It also means that every pupil learns to read music. For the first me this year we are having a Summer Exhibi on of children's Art work. This is a new ini a ve and the children have all been busy drawing and pain ng. The work will be framed and parents will be able to make a small dona on to take the work home. It will be fantas c to showcase their Art work in this way.

Learning Week took place in June and the children brought in their pets and shared their skills with us. This week provides the children with an opportunity to become teachers as realise how they have to plan their lesson. One Year 1 pupil demonstrated a film of his Lego people that he had animated himself, another showed us how to put up a tent and another how to make a catapult and Class 2 have made bird boxes with a volunteer parent, Mr Buky. We have taken delivery of an outside Table Tennis Table and the children are enjoying honing their skills. We are hoping to add to our outside play equipment with 4 pieces of gym equipment. Sandon in the sunshine is a fabulous place to be. Margaret Gilbert - Head Teacher

5 minutes with... Daniel Hodgson from *Tell me a bit about Legacy? Having worked in the commercial cleaning industry for 15 years I set up Legacy Contract Cleaning Ltd as a commercial cleaning company in 2012. Originally I had focused on cleaning for local businesses but I received so many enquiries about home cleaning I soon had a number of weekly home cleaning jobs. It was clear there was a gap between sole trader cleaners, franchises and large cleaning companies where service was hit and miss, customer service was o en poor and professional knowledge was not there. In this gap I created Legacy and I am very proud of our three values which s ll remain true 4 years on – professional, trusted and reliable. *Why did you start the business? Having worked for other companies at a Director level I had gained a lot of knowledge rela ng to Health & Safety, Human Resources, Quality and Environmental impact in the cleaning world. With this strong founda on I was sure I could set up my own business and run it be er than some of the previous companies I had worked for as I really care about the service the team deliver and the importance of fulfilling promises. *Where is the company based? We are based in Sto old and currently have customers in Baldock, Sto old, Hitchin, Letchworth and many of the surrounding villages. I believe one of the reasons Legacy has been successful is how we stay so local which means my supervisor, wife Rachel and I can always keep a check on cleaning standards and cover any holiday or staff absence for our customers.

*So what makes Legacy different to other companies? With my cleaning background I have taken all the best commercial prac ces andapplied them to our business such as colour coded microfiber cloths, flat mopping systems, professional chemicals and a detailed staff training plan. This system is used on all cleaning jobs no ma er if the cleaning is one day a week or seven days. I am o en asked why don't I buy cheaper products off the shelves of the supermarket and simply this is one of the ways we deliver such great consistent cleaning standards and also safeguard our staff and customers property from damage. *What type of places do you clean currently? We have all types of cleaning contracts from houses to offices, shops to factories. We also clean a number of halls and other public buildings with our most recent contract due to start in July being for a busy local golf club. *Why should I choose Legacy for my business or home cleaning? Legacy provide excellent standards of cleaning at a compe ve rate backed up by excellent customer service. We have a fantas c team that understand our values and strive to deliver a great service for each customer whatever their needs are. *If I am interested in a quote what should I do? Call or email me! Usually we come and meet with you to discuss your requirements and from this I will prepare a quote specific to your business or home requirements. I love my job and get real sa sfac on from all the happy customers we have so I look forward to talking with you too.

Open Gardens at Weston Way Sunday 15th May was the Open Garden event organised by the Baldock Rotary Club on behalf of the Baldock Fes val. It was the first me that Weston Way Nursery had taken part in the event but we decided it was an ideal opportunity to share our wonderful woodland garden with the wider community. The sun shone and we had over 80 visitors, they ranged from people who a ended the nursery over 50 years ago to babies in arms who have yet to complete a registra on form. It was fascina ng to hear the recollec ons of when one lady remembered as a young child having an a ernoon nap on a folding bed under the shade of the horse chestnut tree to another remembering she was here all day while her mother worked in a local factory as part of the war effort. Some of the children presently a ending proudly showed their parents the mud kitchen, troll bridge and newly felled tree stump. The staff and the governors served teas and coffee and a large selec on of homemade cakes. It was such a success we decided to par cipate in the event again next year, so if you were unable to make it this me put the date in your diary for 2017. On Friday 20th May we had a visit from Sir Oliver Heald MP. He was interested to see first-hand the high quality early years provision the Nursery provides for the children in Baldock and the surrounding areas. He congratulated us on 3 successive Outstanding Ofsted Inspec ons and wished us well for our next one.

He was par cularly impressed with the confidence and independence the children showed when selec ng their ac vi es from the wealth of those available in both the indoor and outdoor environment. He took a keen interest in the g ro w i n g a re a w h e re t h e children had just harvested the leeks. He even gave us some top ps for sowing carrots seeds using fine sand to ensure an even distribu on! We had to remind Sir Oliver to make sure the s ck he was going to throw in the 'throwing area' was the correct and safe size, he was tempted to throw one of the lager s cks un l Ms Mille gave him a gentle reminder! Sir Oliver spent over an hour at the Nursery School and we think he would have liked to have spent longer but he had another engagement he had to get to in Royston.

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp

July 2016.

Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre

I am writing this piece as we rush towards July, from what you will gather in my writing world is still June, I have an idea of what the weather will be as you read this and I’ll tell you later on. but at the moment it is pouring down with rain and very cool as it has been for most of this spring, that though is the complete opposite to what world science is saying, evidently in the northern hemisphere April and May were the hottest ever recorded. The cool wet spring has been wonderful for the native plants and trees, the Hertfordshire country side is looking splendid in its greenery, possibly the best I can remember. Earlier this month you might have seen another of natures phenomena, the May flowers flowered late by about ten days and in a period of drier warmer weather this caused the flowers to stay on the trees longer and in better condition than many - many years, they matured from their normal bright white to a beautiful deep pink. The last two weeks have seen the results of the prolonged flowering showing the heaviest set I've ever seen, the berries this autumn should be something to behold. In the garden the cooler wetter weather has caused very mixed results, with the season being about two weeks late and not many insects or Bees about, the apple and pears have suffered with poor pollination again, many gardeners reported a massive pear set and had hundreds of little pears all standing to attention like soldiers but as they turned over they mostly all fell off leaving less than a ten percent crop, Williams doing better than most at about fifteen percent. Apples have also had a poor set and with the misnamed June drop still to come (usually in the first week of July) many varieties will have a very poor crop, My Cox orange pippin and Queen Cox have done marginally better than last year, If I had got this sort of set when growing commercially I would have been pulling my hair out, in the garden it doesn't have such a financial consequence but what it does mean is that the fruit size will be much larger and will suffer from mineral deficiencies and varieties like Bramley will suffer badly from bitter pit a lack calcium showing its self with brown skin depressions and internal black spots. Excessive growth is something you need to keep an eye on as the trees will convert the energy saved from the lack of fruit into extension growth, be careful how you control this extra growth, the way it’s controlled will depend on the variety of fruit not just the root stock. If you are not sure come and talk to me, bring a photo of the tree if you can, along with as much information as you have available, advice is always freely given.

Vegetable growing has been tough this spring, Runner beans had the most trouble, when most people wanted to plant them it was unbearably cold, then when it had warmed up enough to plant them the slugs and snails got the lot and everyone had to start again, Cucumbers, marrows and courgettes developed wilt, probably seed borne, they would look as if they needed watering all the time, go grey and die, nothing anyone can do about that, carrots have been very patchy, beetroot and chards have shown their usual reluctance to germinate the complete opposite to spring and all seed grown onions they have grown like weeds, winter planted garlic is looking magnificent as are the onion sets. Pest and disease wise we are seeing lots of powdery mildew on fruit and perennial plants, botrytis and other rots starting on soft fruit. Serious numbers of green and black fly have been around in huge numbers as its been so cold that any natural predators have not been able to achieve high enough population levels, vine weevils have been active earlier and longer than ever before and are eating allsorts of plants that were never affected. Last September one of my staff found a huge chrysalis which we kept over winter in a clip top plastic box, it hatched out this week and it turned out to be a beautiful Elephant Hawk Moth, not rare but not found in great numbers photos have been taken and will be on show in the Garden Centre, I’m told that it probably got so big eating our fuchsias, we are very lucky and get to see many of natures creatures on our site, ranging from the smallest insects through dragon flies up to badgers and foxes, what gives us the most fun is when a customer finds one of our toads in a plant, you can very likely hear them screaming as far away as Bygrave, we see allsorts of birds and you can borrow a pair of binoculars from our tea room to view them yourself, the red kites are very popular viewing. Now here is the good news, the meteorologists are saying as a preliminary forecast for July that the controlling high pressure that has been to the north of us for so long is going to shift, slightly south and west, this will give us in the south east a slightly above average temperature and slightly below average rain fall. Please remember if this turns out to be wrong that I am only repeating what is given out as their best guess as this sort of long range stuff “is really in its infancy” and I’m writing this some weeks ahead any way. Get them gardens done, its BBQ and beer time, enjoy your garden, Cheers Graham. JULY

Funding Helps to Light Up Letchworth Rugby Club A family friendly Rugby Football Club was in the spotlight at the Baldock and District Area Commi ee last week, when it was awarded a grant of £450. Letchworth Garden City Rugby Football Club was awarded the funding by North Her ordshire District Council's (NHDC) Baldock & District Area Commi ee to contribute towards the costs of purchasing mobile floodlights for the club's rugby pitches. Members of the club, who live in both Letchworth & Baldock and the surrounding areas are currently only able to play on one floodlit pitch which is being overused. This results in the pitch becoming damaged and training being cancelled. Cllr Jim McNally, who took over as Chairman of North Her ordshire District Council's (NHDC) Baldock and District Area Commi ee in May, said: “The club hosts rugby games and matches for a wide variety of people including junior teams, schools, rugby fes vals, and caters for people of all different abili es including people with learning disabili es and au sm. “The rugby club is an integral part of the community and we are happy to support its development by helping to fund the mobile floodlights”. Richard Sell, the club's Community Officer, said: "It's with the support of the Baldock & District Area Commi ee and other partners that allows the club to grow and improve. We want to encourage more local people to join in and reap the physical and mental health benefits of playing regular sport and being part of a truly community based club. I express our sincere thanks to Jim and the other Councillors on the Commi ee for their posi ve support and encouragement".

Carve Your Name into School History Carve Your Name into School History and Buy-a-Brick in our new Science Centre The local community may be aware that The Knights Templar School was awarded £3 million pounds this year to rebuild our old 'Science' Block - or 'S Block' as many locals will remember it. Maybe it was in one of these rooms that you were inspired to pursue a career in Science, the Arts or Technology. Over the past few months our beau ful new Science Centre has been taking shape on the school field. Many local people will be aware that we have been busily fundraising throughout this year in order to provide brand new equipment and resources to this vital curriculum area and give students here the brand new start they deserve. We recently launched a 'Buy-a-Brick' campaign to give everyone associated with the school – now and in the past - the opportunity to pledge their material support. You might ask why. Why should I put name to a brick? What good will it do? I le years ago and The Knights Templar School is just a part of my story. And that's it really, isn't it? It's simple. As someone who was once a parent, a student or even a member of staff here you will always be part of the Knights Templar family. Pu ng your name on a brick means that everyone will know how much this school meant to you and how much you s ll mean to it. The first bricks started rolling off the produc on line last week and they look superb. These will be placed in a specially set aside space at the front of the new building, which is due to be opened by Sir Robert Winston on September 23rd. These beau ful bricks, cra ed by our very own woodworking expert Orlando Micele, will not be there un l 'something be er comes along'. They will be on our wall forever along with the names of all our supporters. You can be sure that if you pledge your support it will be admired and respected by all who work in the building for many years to come. We urge you to add your name to this rapidly growing list - if only to ensure that a li le piece of you or your family lives on. The Knights Templar School has been at the heart of this community for 75 years. Please help us con nue to deserve that posi on by suppor ng this ini a ve. So far the scheme has raised £2,750.00. If you have already purchased a brick, we thank you. If not, please go to www.ktemplar.herts.sch.uk/Ne ws/Buy-A-Brick/ to download a form. We really hope you'll purchase one in the very near future. Bricks are priced from £25.00 and forms can be returned to school very easily. We hope we don't need to tell you that generosity is the spirit of The Knights Templar School. Please support our fundraising campaign and help us ensure that Science gets its brand new start! JULY

Transcend JetDrive Go 500G...

...Super fast backup for your iPhone Apple has always played it safe with regard to storage in the iPhone and iPad, keeping both devices firmly enclosed in milled aluminium with internal access to only the SIM card. Hardwiring (or soldering) components into a device means the manufacturer doesn't need to include memory and ba ery adapters which take up space and more importantly depth in the phone. Consequently Apple devices are therefore nice and thin. Disallowing addi onal memory means users have to closely monitor their phone storage. It doesn't take long for those high bitrate 4K videos to start ea ng into an iPhone internal storage, meaning you need to start archiving videos and photos to another device such as a Mac or PC (or cloud storage if you have the me and data bandwidth) to stop the memory being used up. Worse s ll, If you are out and about and run out of phone storage, you are going to be looking at dumping what might be precious footage stored on your phone to make space for new photos and videos. This is where Transcend step in with their JetDrive Go 500G Lightning / USB 3.1 Flash Drive, a very ni y device (or dongle) that plugs directly into your iPhone or iPad's 'Lightning' port and allows you to copy or move your photos and videos straight off your device onto a flash drive and thus free's up your phone for more film making and photography. You can even take photos directly onto the flash drive if you wish using the Transcend Go App which is automa cally downloaded when you first plug the device into your phone or tablet. The jetDrive Go 500G is different from standard flash drives in as much as it both Lightning and USB on the same device which a connector mounted at end. The lightning 'end' plugs directly into your iPhone or iPad and allows you to copy data at speed of up to 20MB/s onto the drive. At the other end of the flash drive is a USB 3.1 connector (recognisable by its blue colour) which connects directly into a PC or Mac and copies data up to an amazing 130MB/s, so again no delays in copying your video and photos over to your desktop or laptop. The drive comes in two sizes, 32Gb and 64Gb and in either Silver or Gold zinc alloy. These two storage op ons are going to be a dream come true for those of us with smaller internal storage op ons and may even delay that dreaded phone upgrade. Package wise, the flash drive comes in a simple package along with clear instruc ons, a wrist strap and two plas c caps for either end of the device to protect the connectors. From opening the

package, plugging in the device to downloading and running the small "Go" App, I was up and running in literally two minutes. The device worked flawlessly for me and it wasn't long before I was zooming around the house, backing up the kids iPads and my wife's iPhone, it really was very easy to use. I was certainly surprised how something that could be considered fairly insignificant to look at could actually be a bit of a godsend for the iPhone community. This is an excellent Apple MFi cer fied product and comes highly recommended from us. The JetDrive Go 500G is priced at £50 for the 32gb model and £67 for the 64gb, you can purchase directly from Amazon using the link alongside this text. Other op ons are available from other manufacturers and outlets, take care to ensure plugin peripherals are cer fied before using them. Ma Porter - www.thegadgetman.org.uk.
