Welcome To the 1st anniversary issue of On Our Doorstep. We can't believe how quickly the last year has own by. The magazine has received such a great response from those who receive it each month and we hope that this success continues. We would love to hear form you with any ideas for future issues or front covers etc. We would like to start by congratulating all those involved in the organisation of the Baldock Festival this year! Once again a huge success, from the Beer Festival held at Brandles School to the High Street entertainment with the Morris Dancers, it's always great to see the town full of people and buzzing. This year on the 7th June the grass along the High Street in Baldock will once again be transformed into a huge street party in aid of the excellent countrywide celebrations that is the 'Big Lunch'. This will be the 5th year that the Baldock Town partnership have organised the event and they have booked a steel band to provide a real party atmosphere. If you haven't bought your ticket yet they are available from the Community Centre and on line at baldocktown.co.uk. As usual there will be a good variety of different food and plenty to keep the children entertained. With the weather starting to warm up it has prompted us to start thinking about booking our

Did you know that 2/3 of children in Britain fall below the recommended levels of fitness for their age group? In fact, our children are so behind in their fitness journey that the average 10 year old in 1998 could beat 95% of youngsters performing running tests in 2008. This is something that needs to change. And fast. Being physically ac ve every day is vital for the healthy growth and development of children. Being ac ve boosts their self-esteem, it improves their social skills and above all boosts their happiness levels and increases their energy levels. If they're slumped in front of the Xbox or playsta on for hours on end they're going to get groggy, red and reach for sugary snacks that will give them a spike in adrenaline quickly followed by a crash in adrenaline. Allowing them me in front of the computer is great as a treat but it shouldn't be something that they turn to every night for entertainment. We need to encourage our children to lead ac ve, healthy lifestyles and get them to see and feel the benefits for themselves. There are so many ways in which you can engage them in healthy ac vi es. It could be crea ng a treasure hunt in the woods for the li le ones, it could be organising a football or rounders match in the local park with your neighbours or it could be signing them up for classes at your local gym or leisure centre. At Fitness Hub we run specialist classes for kids throughout the week and on Saturday's too. From the age of five up un l 15 we have something for everyone to enjoy, whether it's boxercise or a circuit class, street dance to yoga. And while you're there you've got no excuse not to get a good workout too!

BALDOCKS BUSY BEAVERS We have been very busy at First Baldock beavers over the last six weeks. As an Easter treat, the beavers visited the Laser Tag in Stevenage. It was a very enjoyable hour for the beavers chasing each other around with guns and taking great delight in zapping one another – victory to the red team! Meanwhile back at the scout hut we said hello to some new faces and a fond goodbye to some more familiar ones. As part of the Camp Skills badge the beavers created structures out of bamboo, string and elas c bands. There were a many superb construc ons such as bridges, wigwam tents and towers. It was such a shame to have to take them all apart again at the end. They also took part in the Experiment Badge. This consisted of: predic ng if different objects were magne c, plan ng cress into yoghurt pots, playing with GeoMag and supervising the leaders who performed the Mentos and Coke reac on (we didn't want the beavers doing that!) As the weather is warming up we descended upon the Radwell Meadows to complete a bug hunt. All sorts of mini-beasts were collected including millipedes, spiders and red ants. One beaver insisted on collec ng as many snail shells as it could find. Then we toasted marshmallows over bbq's (not over open fires!) and ate them within two biscuits (yum). And they got a badge for that too!

We are looking forward to our summer term when we will be out and about all over the place! John Goward, D of E helper

NEWS FROM St MARYS

SCIENCE WEEK With the SATs behind us, we are embarking on a Science Week in school before half term. One week in each half term we try to have a focus week to enable the children to develop their interests in a whole school theme that may be curriculum based or may follow a topical theme. Last term, we had Art Week; this term it's Science Week. We have Owls and Birds of Prey coming in so the children can find out how they fly and catch their prey; we have science quizzes and lots of opportunity to ask ques ons – ie, to be scien sts. Our Science Week was launched with a presenta on of science as children love it – with lots of flashes and bangs from conical flasks and Bunsen burners from a scien st wearing a white coat! Mr Ma Lund, a science teacher from The Barnwell School in Stevenage treated the children to experiments using equipment, chemicals and liquids we never see in the primary school. Fully equipped with protec ve glasses for the two front rows of children, ear protectors for the nervous of disposi on, safety screens and a full risk assessment, I have to admit to being just a bit nervous about what would follow but we all sat in amazement as the children learned that different metals produce different coloured flames; that different gases are flammable - but hydrogen makes the biggest bang! Not only was it a memorable 'assembly' but it was also a great example of how secondary and primary schools work together. At the end, lots of children wanted to be scien sts, a few wanted to be science teachers and they all wanted to be in Mr Lund's science class! We hope to show children that science is all around us so the rest of the week involves the children doing their own (safer)

experiments and working with scien sts in the co m m u n i t y. We h ave Setpoint coming in to w o r k w i t h Ye a r 3 - 5 exploring materials and finding out how things change. The Educa on Officer from Anglian Water worked with Year 6 on how water gets to our taps in a clean and drinkable state. They made sewage (don't ask) and filtered it to get clean water and they learned by measuring water that if they leave the tap on while they brush their teeth, over 14 litres will be lost down the drain in two minutes. As well as all these events, teachers have planned experiments each day so the children can be real scien sts. Eg, Year Three are making silly pu y and bouncy balls using everyday materials; Year four are making Lava lamps; Year 5 making rocket launchers. The week culminates with presenta ons by the children themselves who as an op onal homework task, have developed an inven on idea of their choice. Presen ng either an idea or a prototype of their inven on, we are hoping that we may have a poten al Dragon's Den inventor within the St Mary's School community. One thing's for sure, we have a school full of scien sts this week! P. Jenkins - Headteacher

75th Anniversary Staff Reunion The Knights Templar School has been celebra ng its 75th anniversary this year. From our humble beginnings as Baldock County School in 1939, we have come a long way over 3 quarters of a century and we have had much to celebrate! This year has seen us mark our Anniversary with a number of key events, including our Community Open Morning and Gala Ball in October and KTS Presents…75 Years at The Gordon Craig Theatre in March. These events have been a fantas c opportunity to involve past and present students and families in celebra ng the Anniversary however the year would be incomplete without an event which enabled staff of the school, both past and present, to come together and celebrate. We are trying to reach out and contact staff from the past to spread the word about our Staff Reunion A ernoon Tea, taking place from 3.30pm un l 6.30pm on the 18th of July in the main school hall. We are excited to announce that all of our most recent head teachers will be present, including: Mr Vivian Crellin, Mr Peter Chapman and Mr Andrew Pickering. We promise a selec on of tradi onal a ernoon tea treats, a well-stocked bar and live music. If you are able to join us for a relaxed a ernoon of catching up with past friends and colleagues, do let us know by emailing hdavies@ktemplar.herts.sch.uk Please help us spread the word by any resources you have at your means! “What could you do?” LONDON Marathon 2015. Last year, April 2014, I went to support a friend running the London Marathon. She was running for a charity close to her, a er losing a loved one. I had o en said to my wife, I'd like to run the London Marathon and I always got the same reply, “do it then”. Well a er watching it last year I decided I would apply for a place. I started my training in May 2014 and a er running around Clothall Common I felt I'd run at least a half marathon, or that's how it felt! However slowly but surely my mileage started to build, inspiring me with confidence and belief that I might be able to do the 26.2 miles required. It was by no means easy, with injuries and many hours of running, it was at mes tes ng. In January I started training in earnest and soon found myself following a training schedule that made for frightening reading. In February I completed a 10k and in March a Half Marathon. I soon found myself running more miles than I ever dreamed I would run and feeling really good health wise too! A great surprise for me was when I was informed that Daniel Newtown, my old Baldock Town Youth TEMPLARS football team captain had arranged a charity match to raise money for my selected charity. It was great to see the li le fella's that won 5 league tles; 2 League Cups and many other tournaments, well not so li le now! They raised a magnificent £100.00 - Thanks Lads!!!! So came the day of the Marathon itself and feeling good, but slightly apprehensive, I travelled to London and the star ng areas. It was then that I had a feeling I had only felt at the birth of my children and my marriage, hard to explain fully but a feeling of immense pride but at the same me humbled. I think this, and knowing that I was running for people in a less fortunate posi on than I, gave me so much energy I ran and did not stop or even walk, finishing in 4 Hours 10 Minutes 58 Seconds, not too bad for a first try. I know running isn't for everyone and I know I could not have completed this task without a few people around me for support. My wife was a rock, suppor ng me and pu ng up with my training, even ge ng my energy drinks ready as I drove home from work. Also my trainer/Physio, whom I cannot recommend and thank enough, advising me and fixing all my aches and pains – including a lateral knee ligament strain - Nicola Kemp thank you! I did not think I would ever complete a Marathon, 26.2 miles, but not only did I complete it, in total I raised £ 1 9 0 0 . 0 0 fo r a C h a r i t y (Leukaemia CARE) Thank you for your me and Ask yourself “What could you do?”, you'll be surprised!

*How did you start your business? Well, I certainly didn't have a discussion with the careers officer at 16 and say “you know, I think I'll wax men for a living!” If someone had said to me 20 years ago that I'd be running a successful male waxing and grooming business I wouldn't have believed them. My professional career was in marke ng, but following the premature birth of my son I needed a new career with flexible working hours that would allow me to a end to his special needs. I re-trained in holis c and beauty therapy and my client base was predominantly ladies. However, my background in marke ng led me to iden fy a need for a place that was exclusively for men. Gorilla Warfare was established in 2007 and I've been focusing on the male grooming market since then. *Is male waxing really popular, or is just a myth? It's more popular than you might imagine. So many men are doing it, but they just don't talk about it! It's become less taboo though. TV programmes like League of Their Own (Sky) o en discuss 'manscaping' which has made the whole thing more 'normal'. Famous style icons and sports people like David Beckham, Ronaldo and Tom Daley have helped to make grooming more popular. Men remove their body hair primarily to look and feel good or because their partners don't like their body hair. Some will wax to feel cleaner and cooler and reduce rashes and redness caused by chaffing etc. Whatever the reason, there's probably several men in your street removing their body hair on a regular basis! *Who would be a typical Gorilla Warfare client? Perhaps not what you would expect! My typical client is between 44-55, married with a couple of children. Very normal, ordinary guys really. I also work with lots of sports people including professional cyclists, runners and triathletes who require hair removal for their sport.

*What are your most popular waxing treatments? I do more in mate male waxing than any other treatment (male Brazilian) and this is popular among middle-aged men. The next most popular treatment is a back wax, followed by nostrils and brows. *Does it hurt? I'd be fibbing if I said it wasn't uncomfortable! I asked my clients to rate the pain and nearly all rated it 6 out of 10, however once it's done the pain is instantly gone. It's like pulling a plaster off. The most common thing I hear is “well, that wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be!” However, nostril waxing is completely painless. Men will know that pulling out a single nostril hair can feel like you're pulling your brain out through your nose, but waxing all the hairs at once just doesn't hurt. *What sets Gorilla Warfare apart from other male grooming studios? We're open at mes that are convenient for men - 7am-9pm, 7 days a week. We also offer on-line booking which has proved very popular. Our masculine branding also means that men feel comfortable coming into the studio for treatments. I've been waxing men for nearly 8 years and was originally trained by two of the country's leading waxing experts. This isn't a beauty salon, but a place that delivers professional waxing services for men who need body hair removal for their sport or occupa on, as well as for those who just want to look and feel great. *Any plans to develop the business? I've recently opened a new studio in Clerkenwell, Central London which is doing great. I'm also looking to use the powerful and eyecatching Gorilla Warfare branding to develop a range of men's underwear and male grooming products

Peace of Mind at Home or Away I'm sure some of you remember going out (or even on holiday) and thinking 'Did I leave the iron on?'. Even more of us have got out of bed in the night to get a hot drink downstairs and stubbed our toes in the night because it was dark! What about when you go out for the evening and worry because you haven't le a light on and whether people will no ce and put your house at risk.

There are plenty of reasons for us to worry about these things, but it seems that electronics company Dlink may have the solu on to at least some of these woes. I'm talking about their mydlink home range of products that I have been tes ng recently. These products range from night vision compa ble HD cameras to the remotely accessible 'Smart Plug’ The 'Smart Plug' was a par cular favourite of mind. It has a very straigh orward installa on process which connects it to your home wireless network via a iPhone, Android or Windows Phone app. It looks very much like a tradi onal mer that you plug into

Crash Care Centre Ltd

Vehicle Accident Repair Specialists

the wall and then plug an appliance into. Using the app you can set it as a mer to come on and switch off as specific mes of the day, much like a standard mer plug, but you are also able to set it to switch on and off remotely... From anywhere in the world with a mobile signal!! You could be si ng on the beach in Australia and switch on your hall lamp in your house in the UK! You can also read how much electricity you are consuming through the smart plug and if you like set it to only use a specific amount per month before switching itself off. It has sensors that measure the temperature of the plug and it will switch off the appliance to avoid overhea ng and even email you to warn you about it. The real value comes in when you use it with other mydlink home products. You can install the 'Mo on Sensor' and have it switch on the Smart Plug if it detects movement, great if you put in on the landing and have the smart plug switch on a lamp in the hallway. The HD camera can also talk to the other products, so if for instance the camera picks up noise (such as a baby crying), you can program it to switch on a smart plug with a baby light plugged into it, the possibili es are endless!!

The final product is the wireless music streamer, this plugs into a mains socket and firstly extends your wireless network range as it acts as a range extender, but be er s ll it has a standard audio jack socket which you plug into your audio system, you can then stream all your iPhone or Android songs using another app, great for par es! The mydlink home products are available from most stockists and I can really recommend them.

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp

Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre

So Its time to write another piece, time goes by so fast. This is for you to read in June, as I sit here its only the third week in May and the bank holiday is fast approaching, not only have I got to stock the Garden Centre with what you will need, but try and write about it as well. This Gardening game, as I’m always saying — “all about the weather” April and May have had some very warm moments but only in the day, night temps have on the face of it been warmish if you believe the thermometer, the truth is that the chill factor has been and still is at the time of writing causing the actual temperature felt by the plants cold enough to cause setback or damage. I realise you must all be getting fed up with me droning on and on about it, but 100% of nothing is not worth having, cold damaged cues and toms will grow and look fine but will have a shortened harvest time and a much reduced crop weight, light intensity and soil temperature are also important factors. Professional gardeners and Growers have been writing about this for hundreds of years and the plants have been growing in synchronisation with nature for ever, so the only way to get early or out of season crops is by using a greenhouse with heating , lighting and irrigation. On a different and more fun subject, we have acquired a microscope for our laptop and are able to project the resulting images onto our firework shop 19 x 8 ft projector screen, what we have seen is scary beyond belief, If you have any scary pests or insects in your garden and you would like to see them in monster size then arrange it with us for a private showing. Imagine seeing garden pests thousands of times larger!!! That link's very nicely into the next subject pest and disease control in the garden greenhouse and conservatory, over wintered red spider is showing its ugly head and will cause untold damage before you realise, I have had samples of shredded leaves bought in for examination recently and the look on peoples faces when they learn that it’s the birds they have looking after all winter, the mating ritual of many garden birds includes shredding your valuable plants and stripping buds from your fruit trees.

Hanging Baskets in June Hanging baskets are in the forethought of most customers in early June and if you waited patiently for the word GO and have cleaned your old baskets in anticipation then I would say that it is time to get started. The rules for a good basket are to be found in many places and lots of people have different ways of doing them, I would like to add that over many years of dealing with the general public the most common mistakes to avoid are :1 To few plants in the basket— you will not get anything to outshine them next door if you only put 3 plants in a sixteen inch basket!!! 2 To little compost and of a poor quality will never work. 3 Water the baskets or tubs twice a day making sure that they are wet enough over night as that’s when your plants will make best use of it ( Just like having a Gin and Tonic when you get home from work ) 4 Feed your plants twice a day !!! Simple mix a tea spoon of tomato feed into a two gallon watering can and use it to water as above, do it every day, I mean every day, if your plants run out of feed early they will go to seed and you will never get them back into good order, modern F1 hybrid plants are hungry and will only reward you if looked after. 5 Finally where ever you buy your plants from make sure they are good quality and that they are F1 hybrids not F2’s or open pollenated they may be cheaper but only by pence and will never ever perform properly and never give you a Chelsea winner, having been on a Chelsea gold winning team twice 1973 / 74 I can confirm that only the best plants, the best feed and attention to detail is the only way. Finally a tip on how to grow the best tomato’s— use ring culture, what you do is take a ten litre plastic pot cut the bottom out of it, then tape it back in place, fill the pot to the top with tub and basket compost and plant the tomato into the compost as normal. When the tomato roots are near to filling the pot and not allowing the roots to come through get a high quality tomato planting bag ( large grow bag ) take the bottom back off the pot and use that as a template to cut a hole in the top of the bag, put it in its finale position and then put the pot containing the tomato on top of the cut out, you will get 3 ten litre pots per bag , feed every time you water as mentioned above and you will get the best toms ever. Good Gardening Cheers, Graham. Get in touch info@onourdoorstepbaldock.co.uk

The Future is Bright Letchworth Rugby Club: It has been another great year for the youth sec on at Legends Lane, here is a quick round up. The Under 16's had new personal on and off the field. It took a li le me for them to bed in and despite a slow start to the season by Christmas things had started to go well. A er the break, performances improved and the team went on to win their division. The tour down to Weston Super Mare was up to the expected standards (despite the accommoda on) and we were crowned Best Tourists. The Under 15's Despite losing a number of key players and egos early on in the season, primarily to other clubs through the county rugby poaching protocol, the Letchworth U15 squad steadily increased in numbers, and as the season progressed, so this ght group of players thrived. In fact the one major posi ve to come out of this season is how the team have bonded and worked for each other without the reliance on our more privileged “individuals”. Early league disappointments were soon put aside, and a string of great team performances, o en against all odds, bore testament to how hard these guys were prepared to work. With specialist fitness coaching on Tuesday evenings – delivered by our own Green Goddess Donna Fox and the effervescent Wasps fan “Bam” - and a return to core values and the emphasis on developing basic skills rather than the over-flamboyant, the fast flowing rugby mirrored our very own first team. It would be churlish to iden fy individual players a er such a concerted team effort, suffice to say a number of these young men came of age, and thanks to the club's youth policy in general, the future is bright for Letchworth Rugby Club. The coaching staff of Tony “LG” Richardson, Glenn “The Beast” Kingston, Barry “Crooner” Whitley and “Whispering” Jon Flack were omnipresent and remained posi ve throughout, ably supported by their backroom administra ve team of Kim Flack and her trusted advisors. It is their inten on to con nue to grow this allinclusive squad, and quite possibly a ract back to the Letchworth fold some of the misguided starlets from yonder. The Under 14's Having been promoted from Division 3 last year, the aim was to maintain out place in Division 2. The last match of the Season was to decide whether Letchworth or Harpenden were relegated. In atrocious weather condi ons but with a great team spirit and effort from the players we managed a narrow 14-12 victory, to secure our place in Division 2. Three of our players were selected for Herts County under 14 team: Ma Cook, Karanvir Dhillon & Josh Parkhouse The Under 13's reached the County Cup Final but lost to Old Albanians by 3 points and finished 3rd in League 1. The Under 12's triumphs for 2014/15 Season are as follows: · North Herts Fes val Winners · Bishop Stor ord · Elite Fes val Plate Winners · County Cup Vase Winners · Unbeaten by local rivals - Hitchin! The Under 9's were runners up in North Herts and Bishops Stor ord Fes vals. Winners of the Cambridge and West-Cliff Fes vals. They were also 3rd place, out of 50 teams, at Saracens Championship event. Overall a 95% win rate this Season. Go on under 9's!!! Under 8's and 7's They have also enjoyed a great Season of fun and Tag Rugby. With a vibrant scene on and off the pitch, Letchworth Rugby Club can be very proud of their achievements this year and look forward to more of the same next Season from September.

From the shiny taps to the fluffed cushions you can tell they really take pride in their work. G. Anderson We have recently used Dave from AD Plumbing to carry out a service on our boiler. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very conscien ous I can not recommend them highly enough A James When I came to live in Baldock in 2001 and found myself in need of a tree surgeon, a friend recommended Jim Caddy. Over the years he has pruned and pollarded trees, as well as cleared dead wood. His latest job was perhaps the most difficult in that I could not decide what to do with an overgrown Red Robin pho nia tree. Removal, cu ng back or what? In the end I le it to Jim to do what he thought best. Every day when I sit in the garden I am thrilled with the result of his pruning job – it is a masterpiece. I recommend Jim Caddy for his competence coupled with a friendly, helpful and reliable manner. (Mrs) HH Be s When our old dishwasher of 14 finally had to go to dishwasher heaven, we called Bews Electrical who adver se in your magazine. What a fantas c service form model knowledge through to delivery and install 10/10. Mrs P Woodhouse
