May

Welcome To the May issue How many of you fired up your BBQs over the bank holiday weekend? The weather was unbelievable, hopefully an early glimmer of what's to come this Summer. The long weekend also doubled as a practice run for those of us who are inclined to not only burn their BBQ but our heads and shoulders too. Factor 50 over here please! Baldock's first ever food festival was a success! Drawing in more people than they could have dreamed of, the stalls managed to sell out of food by 7pm. Hopefully you didn't miss out but if you did rest assured next time around the organisers have promised plenty more food, so lots for us all to sample. The next event is scheduled for the first Friday of June - we'll see you there! Jacqui managed to raise an impressive total of £1,305 for Parkinson's UK after completing her first ever half marathon she smashed her £350 fundraising target. Best of luck to those who are in the final stages of training for this years London Marathon, it's a massive feat and an incredible achievement. As always we have loads of things to look forward to throughout May as the Baldock Festival returns! It will be the 36th occurrence of the town's annual event and will take place from Friday 3rd May through to Sunday 19th May. Over the two weeks you can expect a huge variety of activities from the teddy bears picnic

to a walking tour of Baldock's history hotspots. You can even get involved in the Great Baldock Bake Off or just pop along for the social side and grab a pint at the famous Baldock Beer Festival. Everyone's favourite is back again to help round off the festival, the Classic Car Show, will be in town on Sunday 19th May. Parking starts from 10am and any bike, car or commercial vehicle over 20 years old is welcome to join the line up. Enjoy May

Baldock Events Fum 2019 has seen a busy start to the Baldock Events Forum Calendar! The Baldock Beast was a fantas c success with over 370 par cipants and the fastest runner comple ng the course in 1 hour 12 minutes. The overwhelming community atmosphere helped to support the runners which made for a wonderful day. The next Baldock Beast will be held on Sunday 23rd February 2020 so put a note in your diary now!

Looking to the next events the Baldock Events Forum will be hos ng, The Big Lunch will be back on the High Street on Sunday 2nd June from 12.30-4.30 (more informa on on available food op ons is available on our website www.baldockeventsforum.org.uk

Tickets will be available from the Community Centre from 1st May 2019 and will also be available for purchase at the BEF stall at the Baldock Street Fair on 18th May 2019. We really hope that we can beat last year which saw over 250 people come along and have a wonderful a ernoon! The Annual Cycle Challenge is back for the 7th year running on Sunday 14th July 2019. Registra on will be open soon so look out for more details on social media and our website. Informa on will also be available over the summer about the Baldock Christmas Fair which is due to be back on Saturday 7th December 2019. We unfortunately have had to postpone our inaugural Summer Ball due to be held on Saturday 13th July 2019 due to the lack of availability of a suitable venue. We are looking to hold a Winter Ball at the end of November which will be publicised as more informa on becomes available. The Baldock Events Forum was asked if it would like to purchase the BT Phone Box on the High Street near the Community Centre and lots of excellent

sugges ons were put forward by residents. Most sugges ons we received were centred around a book exchange, a defibrillator and an informa on point. Within close proximity of the Phone Box we already have a defibrillator, a local library and an informa on board. Therefore we have ul mately decided this is not a viable project for us but we are working with other local community groups to see if they would like to take this on. If you think that might be of interest to a local group that you belong to please get in touch for more informa on. I have now been the Events Director of the Baldock Events Forum for nearly 10 months. Un l I took on this role, I was completely unaware of how much the people of Baldock rally around and support events in such an amazing way. We really could not host all of these events without the support of local businesses, sponsors, NHDC, members of the community and the individuals who work relessly to make these events a success. Thank you to everyone who contributes and supports us – here is to a fantas c 2019! Laura Millard Events Director – Baldock Events Forum

Thanks f the Memies You know, I've never been a welldisciplined person. Sorry, this is not what I'm going to write about this month, I just wanted to scare Paul a li le. Every month I post this on my face book page. Partly so my friends and family who don't get On Our Doorstep can see how clever I am. But mainly because I s ll can't believe it's me that's doing this, and it makes me feel like I'm something special. Last month a friend of mine commented that the advert for a builder at the bo om of the piece was well placed. I joked with her that I should perhaps write my next piece on bondage or jelly so we could see what advert Paul placed to go with it. You'll all be relieved to know that I bo led it, but not as relieved as Paul. Anyhow, I've been struggling for inspira on for these li le mu erings, so tonight, I ran a really hot bath. Bubbles, candles, glass of red and just let the world go. A couple of things came to me, but the one that got me more than the others was that during the week, I'd grabbed site of a report on memory, this one concerned itself with smell and how it can trigger vivid memories. It was very scien fic and quite boring, so I skipped most of it and went back to catching up on Game of Thrones. While I was soaking off the working day, it occurred to me that its not just smells,

but all sorts of things. Music is quite a powerful kicker for me. When I hear You To Me Are Everything (The Real Thing) I am always instantly transported to my first love. 12 years old and so in love. We used to hang about at lunch me and not talk to each other. It was a wild ride. 2 weeks later it was all over, and I had my first experience of a broken heart. Any song from the Bat Out of Hell album reminds me of how cruel love can be. I was approaching my 16th birthday and didn't have a boyfriend, so this lad asked me out (I didn't fancy him), I was so heartless that I said yes just to get a birthday pressie, he bought me this album and I dumped him a day a er. There's always a holiday song isn't there. Hit Me With Your Rhythm S ck (Ian Dury) and I'm 15 years old in Jersey. It Wasn't Me (Shaggy) and I'm in Florida. Iris (The Googoo Dolls) takes me to Turkey. Isn't it funny how you associate the good and the bad smells? Nice smells bring good memories and bad smells take you to bad places. Lavender, I hate lavender. It always brings to mind a work colleague from long ago. Couldn't stand him, the man was a menace, nothing nice about him at all. Stank of the stuff. Fried egg sandwiches take me back to skiving off school with friends. I dislike the smell of florists, not flowers, but florists, I see my Mother in Law at the

funeral parlour, a picture always flashes in my mind when I enter a shop. Places too, I guess that's one of the reasons why we are ins nc vely against any change in our immediate environment. There's a type of 'grounding' feeling about the memories of places. There will always be the smells and the music, but once a place has gone, then you no longer have that memory trigger and risk losing the feelings that that memory s rs. I suppose that there is some Boff out there that would be happy to explain these associa ons to me, but I don't care. I don't want to smell Hugo Boss and think, ah yes, that's because smells get routed through my olfactory bulb, which is the smell-analysing region in my brain. It's closely connected to my amygdala and hippocampus, the brain regions that handle memory and emo on. I want to wallow in a tale of unrequited love and a li le passion for a few seconds. Hannibal Lecture (my favourite serial killer) had a Mind Palace. Thomas Harris describes how Hannibal would wander through this palace climbing stairs and opening doors to find memories, for him, it was a physical ac vity. He could touch and smell the memories, like walking through a supermarket, knowing exactly where the stock is. Whilst I love that idea, I can't help feeling a bit sad that he was denied the pleasure of a surprise memory tapping him on the shoulder and shou ng Boo! Just before I go, I'd like to give a shout out to the 16-18-year olds (and some of us adults) that are star ng their exams, the season is upon us, good luck to you all guys, have faith. You've got this. But remember, this is a snap shot in your life, it does not define you, you are the measure of yourselves, not a number on a piece of paper.

Skills, Badges and Fun The cubs have had a busy first quarter of the year. They have been comple ng and working towards mul ple badges which include the skills challenge and the gardening badge while a trip to bowling and Mr Mulligans Lost World Golf have provided an opportunity for them to let out some of their endless energy.

The year started with a visit from The Garden Square Letchworth to present a cheque for when Akela helped out with the Christmas shop. This will help to fund some exci ng camps later this year for the cubs and events like bowling in February where all the cubs took part and had fun. During this, they somehow

found me for ea ng sweets between turns which gave them even more energy and lead to several scores over one hundred. The first camp of the year was at Farmer Mark's where the cubs learnt about the safe use of gardening equipment. They also discovered when and how to plant seeds and look a er them. Finally, they all planted some peas and tomatoes to take home and grow as part of their badge. All are growing well and the cubs look forward to harves ng their peas and tomatoes later this year. When the cubs are at the scout hut, they have been working on their skills challenge and home safety badges to name but two. A er an evening of learning and prac sing with the guidance of the leaders, they now know first aid and have also learnt how to prevent accidents around the home during the comple on of the home safety badge. The cubs now look forward to a new term of ac vi es as the long summer days start to approach us. Ma – Young Leader, 1st Baldock, Templars Cub Pack

Fleadh Cheooil

The Baldock Fleadh Cheooil pronounced FLAR KAYOL...and meaning music fes val in Gaelic has become very much part of the Baldock Fes val over the past decade with the sounds of whistles flutes and fiddles domina ng the high street on May Bank holiday Monday ( this year 6 th May ) Organiser Brian Burke said “ I can t believe that ten years have flown since the first one , but the fes val in a small Herts market town which aims to replicate the pub atmosphere of small Irish town fes vals of years gone by and indeed today grows in strength with the number of musicians a ending from year on year . (last year over 40 came !) This year we have a welcoming session in TEMPLARS on the Sunday night from

eight o clock ( they offer special room rates for musicians) and then the Fleadh starts at about twelve thirty the next day (bank holiday Monday ) .Musicians and performers meet at the Boot where they receive a voucher for a drink in each pub and join one of the four sessions that rotate throughout the a ernoon . There is also a food voucher for the Boot Barbecue. There will be Irish Dancers doing the rounds from mid a ernoon inside or out depending on the spring weather . As Baldock is midway between Luton and Cambridge and only 45 minutes on the train from Kings Cross it is a great loca on for a good day out .... Historically Baldock has had a high percentage of Irish and their descendants in the town not least because the se ling of a large number of RIC ( Royal Irish Constabulary) families in the 1920s so if it's Irish music and song you are a er we ll see you there ! EXAM STRESS Exams mes can be stressful and when the body is stressed it produces hormones, two of which are adrenaline and cor sone which cause those classic exam nerves: fast heart rate, clammy hands, swea ng, shaking, bu erflies in the tummy and feeling sick and this is even before you get in the exam room! Regular physical ac vity produces endorphins' which are the 'happy hormones' and can help fight stress. As well as help keeping stress and anxiety at bay, exercise can help students to focus be er in school and while studying, it also helps retain informa on. Studies have shown that parts of the brain that control thinking and memory have a greater volume in people who exercise compared to those who are sedentary. Exercise helps us to think be er by s mula ng new brain cell growth and increase

connec ons between cells to improve a en on. Not only does being ac ve help with all of these physiological benefits it also provides me out, a distrac on from the looming exams and it is fun! It provides the body with an opportunity to move and stretch which is much needed a er hours being hunched over a PC and text books which over me has a detrimental effect on our posture leading to spinal problems and discomfort. It doesn't ma er what form of exercise you choose but it needs to be a moderate to vigorous intensity for 30 mins a day, five days a week. If you don't have a chance to go to a gym a brisk walk or jog outside will do wonders. Ramp up the tunes and dance around the house, get the bike out, go for a swim, whatever you enjoy take me out and move your body; your exam results could depend on it!

Easr Egg Hunt Weston Way Nursery School hosted an Easter Egg Hunt in April. Over 100 children and their families a ended.

The sun shone and everyone had a very enjoyable me. The children had to find various eggs that were hidden in the garden and answer ques ons about them. When they had completed their egg hunt they exchanged their entry sheet for a chocolate Easter Egg of their choice. Refreshments were available for all and a variety of Easter cra s.

Our beloved secretary Elaine LaRoche passed away two years ago. We asked families in the community if they could donate some flowers for us to enhance her garden in the nursery grounds. Everyone was very generous and I was able to spend a day in 'Elaine's garden' enjoying the sunshine and so many very fond memories. Many thanks to everyone who donated flowers they are very much appreciated. We will be taking part in the Baldock Fes val Open Garden event so please feel free to call in and take a look.

Uniform Monkeys Shop Firstly, thank you all to all our schools and customers over the last 3 years. Star ng a business in the local community has been a genuine pleasure. We've had huge support and our reputa on for a high level of service, personal a en on and good value has spread - meaning we have grown rapidly. This year, looking to improve convenience for customers has lead us to make the jump to a physical shop (in addi on to our online store). Located in the arcade in Letchworth town centre (conveniently near the old sweet shop!), we are in the process of decora on and ďŹ ng and will be opening in May. Listening to our customers, we found some s ll missed the convenience of a School uniform shop in Letchworth and we felt this was a service they and the local schools deserved. With handy parking in the Wynd, the family friendly atmosphere of the Arcade and the redevelopment of Letchworth Town Centre we felt the me and loca on was right for us. Whilst parents can of course con nue ordering through our website, via email or over the phone - we relish the opportunity to meet our customers face-to-face and the convenience for ďŹ ngs, exchanges and browsing is undeniable. For us, providing our services to our community is personal. I've lived in this area for over 40 years, I myself went to school here, we raise our own children here. Whilst we are a business it's much more than that to us, it's a way to put something back into our community. We look forward to mee ng many more of you in May, please follow us on Facebook for up to date informa on. And thank you so much for your support. x Liz & all @ The Uniform Monkeys

If you go down to the woods today On Friday 29th March Weston Primary and Nursery School held a whole school Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Day. All pupils from Recep on up to Year 6 were organised into mixed year groups and completed different STEM ac vi es over the course of the day. Our first ac vity was a wonderful example of how the local rural environment can be used to enhance children's learning. As a group the children walked along footpaths, across meadows and into the local woods. They were tasked with finding as many different mini-beasts as they could by looking under branches and leaves on the woodland floor.

We looked at the effect of air resistance on paper planes and helicopter spinners. All pupils made two types of planes themselves and tested the steadiness and accuracy of their flight by aiming at a target in class. They also made their own helicopter spinners and discussed how nature uses a similar approach to keep sycamore seeds in the air for long enough to aid seed dispersal. The final ac vity involved the crea on, by children in small groups, of a board game on the theme of the engineering required for the construc on of the Channel Tunnel. The older pupils did a fantas c job of helping and guiding the younger ones, who had the chance to learn from the older role models. As a village school, our children are all used to learning with pupils in the year above or below them in mixed age classes, but the STEM day gave everyone the chance to work with children of all ages. Thanks go to Mrs Bull and Mrs Nelson for planning and organising the event; thanks also to all parents for sending children in with wellies for the trip to the woods.

Can Acupuncture Help with Anxiety? ‘In theory and prac ce of Chinese Medicine anxiety can have few causes. They are mainly energe cally compromised quality of Heart Qi ('Qi' is energy or 'life force') Heart Blood or Yin deficiency in general rela ng to Pericardium, Heart but also Kidneys organs. Liver Qi Stagna on can be affec ng our moods as well to some degree. Spirit understood as our psycho-emo onal expression is rooted in Blood. That is why women are more prone to anxiety and they have rich emo onal life as the quality of women's Blood is affected by a monthly menstrual cycles. It is confirmed clinically and more women indeed experience or complain about feeling anxious than men.

The acupuncture treatment for anxiety is designed individually for each pa ent. We all may have different imbalances yet they can lead to similar symptoms. Dispersing the excess is the first priority for me as acupuncturist. Only then the underlying weakness in Kid/Heart or Pericardium can be strengthened. Many acupuncture points have calming effect on the mind and they can be used directly to help pa ents to relax during treatment and have longer las ng results from the acupuncture. Just remember that acupuncture is a therapy. The longer you are experiencing your symptoms the more likely it is that the effects of the treatment will come gradually. Slowly but surely is the best way anyway.' Pawel BSc (Hons) LicAc – Wellness at Hollinton Health, Baldock.

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp

St Johns

Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre

May 2019 May is for me the start of the fun part of the year, and we can start harvesting all sorts of our early sown crops, most of our planned plants should be in the soil, raised beds or gro-bags by now and will need careful tending in the way of weeding, feeding and watering. That's the easy part the problematic part is stopping all the uninvited guests from helping themselves to the rewards for your input. Most of the pests we can easily see, snails, slugs, caterpillars, birds, rabbits and even Deer. Some we cannot see, these are the worst of our enemy's because we can't see them without a magnifying glass or microscope. If you do get the chance to have a look at some of these under high magnification you will realise why they can do so much damage. We have three options for dealing with them firstly ignore them and put up with the results, some making many crops unedible or at best unattractive and distasteful. Secondly, with great care, we can use approved chemicals, thirdly we can use natural predators to control mites, wevils and all sorts of burrowing, chewing and sliming pests. If you decide to use natural predators, you will be best buying them online due to the short life expectancy without their prime food source a problem you may find if purchasing from garden centres as they may have been sitting around for a while. Now the biggest problem with most predators is that they will not survive at the lower temperatures that the pests can survive at so they have a head start on us at the early part of the season. The next thing to bear in mind is that its no use purchasing predators until you spot the pest you need to control or they will starve to death before the pest turns up and they can do the job intended. Control of mildews and moulds are best done by airflow, temperature and humidity with the backup of specialist chemicals. Some pests have no natural predators or approved chemicals to control them. It is then down to you to hunt around the garden late at night with yo u r t o rch p i ck i n g t h e m o f f a n d d i s p o s i n g o f t h e m ( b u t n ot ove r t h e fe n c e i n t o n e x t d o o r s g a rd e n ) . If you have any small plants waiting to be planted outside on the windowsill or conservatory, please remember to feed them with a liquid feed and turn them about ninety degrees every day to ensure they grow straight and strong. Early in the month, you can sow half-hardy annual seeds directly into the position you would like them to be flowering. Clematis Montana will be flowering up to the end of the month when they have finished you can prune the plant, containment pruning is the simple thing to do, just cut them back to where you want them to be. As a general rule, any plant that has flowered and just stopped can are able to be pruned at this time of the year, but don't go mad only lightly prune for shape. May will be safe to plant up hanging baskets and planters - do remember that damaging frosts can occur in and around the Baldock area up to the twelfth of June so make sure you can bring them inside or cover them with fleece or bubble wrap. We lost a lot of tender bedding plants in a polly tunnel a while back on the ninth of June we had an anti-frost heater that was malfunctioning and needed replacing, but we decided that as it was so late into June, we wouldn't spend hundreds of pounds replacing it until next year. That night we had one of the hardest frosts I can remember for that time of the year, and we lost several hundreds of pounds worth of plants.

May is probably the last chance to plant potatoes, continue to earth up those you have already planted, now remember that they are gross feeders requiring a minimum of 1kg of a proprietary fertiliser per ten meters row and up to one and a half kilos for main crop and bakers. Copious amounts of water are also essential for good yields of potatoes never let your soil dry out but don't flood them. Overcrowded bulbs can be lifted and split up and replanted as by now they will have stored enough energy to give flowers for the next season. Remember to replant them a bit deeper than usual as the chalk soils in North Herts will cause them to dry out and become blind (no flowers) planting a bit deeper will help avoid this. The bad news in May is that your lawn will be demanding your attention, it will be growing at the fastest at any other time of the year, and you may have to cut it twice a week. A quality lawn feed given in May might seem a bit of an unnecessary expense when the grass is growing at a and is probably pace requiring cutting more times than you would like. Here's the thing, if you can encourage the grass plant to tiller ( grow more stems) and consequently thicker roots it will be able to survive extreme conditions so it would have had a so much better chance of surviving last years incredibly long hot summer. Moss will also be kept away if you have a healthy thick sword, of course, drainage and aerating will also help keep moss under control. I have had no end of people coming in asking how to get their lawn back into condition after last years extreme heat. Keeping it healthy the year before would have saved them a lot of time and money this year. It's a common misconception that a lawn is cheap to run and takes no time at all, in fact, its completely the reverse and probably needs more work than any other part of the garden if you want it to look good. A poor lawn makes the rest of the garden look bad. Enjoy your summer and your garden. Cheers Graham

LOVE YOUR WORK Feel as though your career has stalled? Moving on is one solu on. But handing in your no ce isn't always the answer as jobs are not as plen ful as they use to be. So, if moving on isn't an op on, what is it we can do? By learning how to reframe the way you think about your current situa on , rather than bailing out, you are much more likely to flourish in your career whether you find a new job or not. Here's how to fall in love with work again. Iden fy what you have to offer, what you're good at and most enjoy in your working day, write a list of 10 talents and skills you know that you have. Ask yourself is your current role showcasing those assets, if not what ac on do you need to take to make changes, if you

focus on the skills you have to offer an organisa on rather than dwelling on what they should be giving you, your whole mindset will change. Create a play project, when people get stuck in a rut at work, they tend to get moderately depressed and lose interest in all aspects of life, by taking up in your spare me one new thing that you love and really look forward to something playful, crea ve or energising, be it a sport, a book group or a new class. By becoming posi vely engaged with one area of your life, that enthusiasm will start to filter into everything else including work. Recommit to where you are now, once you've fallen into the 'I hate my job' mindset it's easy to become s ngy about the energy you give to it, turning up late, taking bogus sick days and generally dragging your feet. If your clock watching and moaning it makes you feel even more bored and unmo vated. Changing your a tude is essen al if you want to create any las ng shi , adopt an a tude of enthusiasm and perfec on towards the work, pretend this is the only job you'll ever have and make it your mission to do it perfectly, it will shi your a tude and your energy and your far more likely to a ract the a en on of another employer if you're in that state. Cul vate a sense of belonging; even if you feel there is precious li le you can do to make the work itself more sa sfying, you can s ll enjoy the company of colleagues. Great workplace rela onships can transform an otherwise unfulfilling job, make an effort to connect with colleagues you don't speak to very o en, arrange lunch me or a er work ac vi es. Ge ng along with workmates can also make a seemingly dire situa on bearable. Hypnotherapy can help to reframe and change the way you think, recognise unhelpful thinking and changing it into a more posi ve way of thinking, then with effort and a bit of work along with the support of a hypnotherapist you will soon have a happier and more posi ve outlook on life in general just not in the workplace. Baldock Festival - Communi Spirit at its Best The 36th Baldock Fes val starts on Friday 3rd May and runs for two weeks un l the 19th May. This year there are an amazing 96 events over the two weeks, ckets for the events that haven't sold out are available from the community centre during normal hours. There are some new events this year with the mad scien sts for the children at the community centre, a real-life Enigma machine and talk by the guys from Bletchley park and a new alcohol event with a cocktail masterclass. With all the other firm favourites including whiskey, gin tas ng, wine tas ng, brewery talks, historical walks as well as some interes ng talks at the newly refurbished Baldock Arts and Heritage centre (BAHC). The BAHC will have its grand reopening on Saturday 11th May, the same day as the book fair in aid of the Garden House hospice day in the community centre. The original Beer Festival crew

Kickstar ng the two weeks is the twel h Independent Baldock Beer Fes val which will run from 5pm on Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th from 12noon and Sunday 5th 12 noon ll 8pm. The event has raised significant amounts over the last 11 years, with just under £70, 000 donated to local good causes. In 2018 £12,860 was donated to a range of local causes (local scouts, local schools and nurseries, Children's cancer charity,

Keech hospice, a number of sports groups, MIND, the Baldock poppy appeal, Baldock community fireworks, the garden house hospice, hanging baskets for Whitehorse street, the community orchestra and Herts Young homeless). Some of the dona ons then raised even more money. For example, the £1000 to the community fireworks generated £2000 split across all the local schools and the £200 to the flour for the Langford ra race raised a £1000 for local groups! A whole range of groups have benefited thanks to the support from our great community. The organisers are hoping for the same weather as last year's Bank holiday weekend. The site at Brandles school, Weston Way will be larger this year as the top field will be opened for the children's entertainment. This year's beer fes val theme is celebra ng the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. For those connoisseurs of the beer glasses, but new for this year will be reusable plas c cups to eliminate single use plas cs. There will be a £1 charge, but they have been printed with the beer fes val logo so will be worth keeping! As usual there will be over 100 beers and lagers, 36 ciders, wine, Prosecco and gin from local gin producers Pinkster, as well as all the so drinks, ice creams and a range of different food choices to keep everyone happy. Supported by approx. 30 different music acts (a few favourites are returning) and children's ac vi es on the Saturday and Sunday to keep everyone entertained. The volunteer run event has charitable status with all their accounts available on the chari es commission website.

So please support the event and have a drink in the knowledge you are suppor ng the Independent Baldock Beer fes val charitable trust raise money to 'provide grants and dona ons for such charitable purposes for the public benefit in Baldock and surrounding area'. The Beer fes val website www.baldockbeerfes val.org and their Facebook page (baldock Beer Fes val) have all the details of their previous dona ons. If you miss the beer fes val or any of the other fes val events over the fortnight don't worry, we will have Balstock returning in September followed by the 2nd Baldock Oktoberfest at Brandles School. Tickets go on sale for Oktoberfest for the three sessions, Friday 25th October (18:3023:00), and two on Saturday 26th October (12:00 – 16:30 and 18:30 23:00) to coincide with the start of the Beer fes val available from the beer fes val website.

Fibroscanner Donation

Recently Baldock Rotary Club was one of a number of Rotary Clubs who collaborated to raise funds to provide a Fibroscanner to the East and North Herts Hospital Charity based at the Lister Hospital. Rotarian Paul Redwood said “This was a fantas c night for Rotary District 1260 in Beds, Bucks and Herts when the Fibroscanner was formally handed over to the hospital team. How did this happen – all this started with one phone call from a Consultant Hepatologist to a Rotarian pa ent. The Rotarian discussed how he could find the funds and approached the Founda on team (the Founda on is Rotary's own -

Charity). The call went out to all of the Rotary Clubs in Beds, Bucks and Herts and the majority came back with dona ons. We were helped by the Rotary Club of Gandavi India, Rotary District 1230 – Scotland and Sydney Australia District 9675 demonstra ng the reach that Rotary has. Un l now pa ents have had to undergo a painful biopsy to check on the level of damage to the liver. This means that the pa ent takes up a bed and a nurse's me for quite a while. With the new Fibroscanner, the pa ent only has to undergo a painless scan, like an ultrasound, taking only 10 – 15 minutes. This can be done as an outpa ent or even at a Doctors surgery as the unit is very portable. The Rotary Club of Baldock contributed funds to the appeal which will help people in our community.

Spring is coming, and the days are ge ng longer and warmer and it's nice to spend more me outside, indulge in long walks with your dog and let your cat chase squirrels and birds. But with ho er temperature's and more me outside this also means an increased risk for a flea and ck infesta on. Fleas are ny insects that live by sucking and consuming blood. They have a small body and long powerful hind legs that make them able to take incredible jumps. Only a small number of fleas are normally present on dogs and cats, as the major part will stay in the environment (or in your house/on your carpet) and jump on the animal only when they are hungry... this means that if you see one flea on your pet it's only the p of the iceberg! In cases of severe environment infesta on, they can even jump on and bite people, causing pruritus and skin sore patches. In domes c animals, fleas can cause severe anaemia (especially in case's of puppies and ki ens infested up

20% of all ea & tick products in May

with numerous parasites), which transmit diseases or cause allergic derma s. You can prevent these problems and prevent the infesta on of your house by keeping up to date with household sprays and flea treatments. Ticks are a different type of external parasites. They commonly climb on the p of grass or bushes and wait for the next dog or cat (or human) to s ck to. At that point, the ck will cut the skin of the host, start sucking blood and remain firmly fastened to the skin un l full of blood. These parasites are par cularly nasty because they can transmit serious diseases to animals and humans. Many (but not all) flea treatments are effec ve as ck treatments as well. don't forget to check regularly the coat of your dog or cat for fleas and cks, especially if they walk or go out o en in places highly frequented by other animals, especially deers, hedgehogs, foxes and so on. Check with your vet what is the medica on more appropriate for your pet and your lifestyle. Vehicle Tracking Gadgets - Part 2 Quartix Vehicle Tracking from Zest Tracking

Following on from my previous Car gadgets, this month I'm talking about the Quar x Vehicle Tracker from Zest Tracking. The Quar x Tracker is aimed at companies with fleets of vehicles where detailed usage of cars and vans is a requirement. The Quar x Tracker is again very compact and also plugs into your vehicles onboard diagnos c port (OBDII), the difference being it is much smaller in footprint and can be stowed away in the vehicle making discovery more difficult. Zest again very kindly provided me a preconfigured device which was quickly plugged into my car, I was able to log into the Quar x Website and more importantly install an App onto my Android device to monitor my vehicle in real me. Quar x provide both Android and iPhone compa ble apps. I thought the Quar x app was much more 'friendly' to use and it showed me intui vely 'how' the vehicle was being driven, whether gently or more aggressively. These types of devices are aimed

directly at businesses or indeed individuals that are interested in protec ng their vehicle investment. When vehicles are driven sensibly, their lifespan is dras cally extended, meaning components of major expense are less likely to require replacement when driven 'sensibly'. By monitoring the use of vehicles, fleet owners and managers are able to monitor the use of their vehicles and provide advice to the drivers if they find they are being driven too hard. Aside from the 'fleet' usage tracking, the device also provides a degree of tracking if stolen, but as with the previous device, this is NOT a dedicated stolen vehicle tracker as would be thieves would find it all too easy to locate and dispose of the device. Again, repor ng is extremely detailed and will provide users with extremely detailed informa on about vehicle usage whether individual or a larger fleet. At the business end of the App, Quar x have partnered with Google, u lising it's Map systems which provide usage reports, 'live' geographical informa on

and reports of style of driving. If a vehicle is sta onary, it will show where and for how long it is posi oned, if driving, it will show its current speed. All with a Google map in either 'road' style or satellite style. During the use of the device, my wife had to rush for an emergency dental appointment 15 miles away, due to commitments with our children, I needed to stay at home. I was very concerned about her in the few hours I was away, but I was comforted knowing she has both safely travelled to and from the den st in real me. Both gadgets have been really interest to test and both provide excellent repor ng, I personally would lean towards the Quar x due to its outstanding mobile app. If you run a business with a fleet of vehicles and don't currently keep tabs on driver movement, then the Quar x Vehicle Tracker may well be for you. If so, get in touch with Dominic or Reg at www.zes racking.co.uk. www.thegadgetman.org.uk

It has been a very busy spring term for everyone at school. The whole school joined in with World Book day by coming to school dressed as an adjec ve- we have some very crea ve families out there. We also showed our support for the Brain Tumour Research Charity by joining in with na onal 'Wear a Hat Day'. Raising awareness of the work of chari es such as this is especially important to us as it has affected the life of one of our children and we wanted to show him and his family our support.

Year 1 discovered all about the world through their topic 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' which involved them coming to school all prepared to board a plane and head to France. They had to go through all the usual airport checks and some even had the privilege of being upgraded to First Class before finding their seat on the plane and taking off! Recep on children have been using their imagina on and using wonderful words to describe a mysterious suitcases and solving the mystery of the missing egg. Outside they have been mixing up po ons and performing for each other on their new stage area.
