Fireworks Display
NOW ON BONFIRE NIGHT * DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS
Sunday 5th November 2017 HartsямБeld School Gates open 6:30pm
Welcome To the November issue of On Our Doorstep. Baldock town firework display has been moved to 5th November. Organisers felt it was best that we were all blown away with the incredible display rather than being literally blown away by storm Brian! The event will still be held at Hartsfield School with fireworks generously donated by Graham Tapp of Tapp's Garden Centre and sponsored by the Baldock Beer festival. We would like to thank Graham and his team for all their time and effort put in to ensure this year is another huge success with all proceeds going to local charities. If you're yet to stock up on your own fireworks and sparklers this year Tapps have a huge array on offer so be sure to check them out. As we head into November there is only one question on every man's upper lip... To tache or not to tache? Movember is back! 'Doing Movember means raising funds for men's health. And growing a Mo is your chance to do just that. Start clean shaven, grow throughout the month, and get some serious funds behind the men who need it most.' Get involved at uk.movember.com Jayne Miles Health and Beauty Salon based in Church Street, Baldock has been a town staple for over 18 years now. This month the salon welcomes new owner Faye Gooda! We wish Faye and the rest of the team at Belle & Bee Beauty all the best going forward. For many the Christmas countdown has already begun. Baldock's annual Christmas Market will light up the High Street on 2nd December with a variety of food and craft
stalls, live music and amusements for our younger ones to get the who family in the Christmas spirit. If you can't wait that long why not visit The Christmas Shop in Walkern. Guaranteed to fulfil your festive needs, you will not be disappointed! If you have an evening to spare the Baldock Rotary Club are looking for helpers with Santa's sleigh. The annual tour of the town has been a town tradition for years and for many it holds fond memories of their children watching by the window for Fathers Christmas's early visit. On a less cheery note, Baldock has had a number of burglaries in recent weeks. Please be extra vigilant and take care where possible to secure your homes and belongings. Until next month

Baldock, Bygrave and Clothall Planning Group The Baldock Bygrave and Clothall Planning group are stepping up their ac vity this autumn by preparing a survey to gather opinions on what the residents and businesses in the area would like to see in the Neighbourhood Plan. It cannot be over emphasised that this is the way forward for people to affect the future development within the Local Plan. It is hoped that people will make the effort to complete this survey and be er s ll to come to subsequent mee ngs to discuss the findings. It is intended that the survey will reach every household and business during December. The resul ng material will be used to inform the Neighbourhood Plan which will be produced during the spring. Follow the group on their website at www.bbplan.co.uk to keep up to date with how things are going. The more people who join in then the more successful the Neighbourhood Plan will be. Recently the group organised two walks around the boundaries of the main development areas. On July 8th we went north around BA1 and the proposed industrial area. It took a couple of hours. On September 30th we went south around BA2/3/4 for around an hour. Both walks brought it home to us just how huge the areas are, a bit of a shock to some.
The group has also been in contact with the consultants WYG, who organised the recent consulta on for Her ordshire County Council on their masterplan, poin ng out some flaws in their proposals. It was felt that the consulta on was rushed and did not take proper account of local concerns or the character of the town. The aim of the Neighbourhood Plan is to influence their proposals as much as possible, and secure the best outcome for Baldock, Bygrave and Clothall, should the expansion of the town be approved. On Monday 16th October a good crowd a ended a public mee ng in the church hall. The standing commi ee was reelected and people were invited to help in other ways. There was a presenta on on what the Neighbourhood Plan can do and where we are in the process. There was much discussion about the recent consulta on on the development proposals put forward by Her ordshire County Council who want to retain control over how development proceeds. Traffic through the new developments on proposed new roads is a major source of anxiety. The next few weeks will be a busy me for the group as we prepare and deliver the survey. If you can help in any way or would like more informa on about our work just email info@bbplan.co.uk. We now wait with everyone else in North Herts to hear what is said at the Public Hearing into North Her ordshire's Local Plan, which starts on Monday 13th November at the Icknield Centre, Icknield Way, Letchworth, SG6 1EF. This is the document that will determine whether major growth happens or not. The session concerning Baldock is on 27th November. We are all invited to a end. Chris ne Watson for BBPlan

So just an update with regards to our last two appeals; Back in June we held a “Great Blooming Tea Party” for Marie Curie, (which we raised over £170) anyhow, one of the volunteers that helped out on the day told me about her friend that runs an orphanage in Nepal and they collect the school summer dresses for the girls “Sunday Best”. I thought this was a fantas c idea and arranged for posters to be produced to encourage the local residents to donate their daughters dresses. The appeal was successful and we collected over 70 dresses. We also raised over £340 for our Macmillan Coffee morning we held on the 27th September. A good couple of months for charity I think! We sell direct from the farm our own Free Range Bronze Turkeys and Barn Reared Chickens fresh for Christmas. Having arrived on the farm as day old chicks in July they are allowed to reach full maturity
30 Years of Merry Go Round Merry Go Round Under Fives is a Pre-school and Nursery who provide exci ng pre-school educa on and opportuni es for children under five from Baldock and the surrounding areas. Alison Gentle one of the Founders of Merry Go Round "Unbelievably it is 30 years since my friend Sharon and I decided that, there being no morning Mum and Tots groups locally, which we could a end with our youngest children, we would start our own. Merry Go Round started as a one morning a week session, that grew and grew so that we were running 5 mornings a week, with over 20 Mums a ending each session, and much support from our regular Mum volunteers. A er a year or so our very popularity did cause us a li le problem as we had to accommodate not only the numbers per session but our growing toys, arts & cra s and associated paraphernalia." "A er taking the group and trialing a couple of local venues,
we were given temporary accommoda on of two classrooms at Brandles Close School. This worked extremely well for the group, but we knew it was a temporarily solu on." "With our older children at Hartsfield, Sharon and I approached the then Hartsfield Headmistress, Mrs. Li le, as the mobile located nearer the school gate and rela vely detached from the school, was no longer required by the school. An amicable agreement was formed with Hartsfield and the then School Governors with the blessing of NHDC and Merry Go Round moved into its present loca on in the double mobile on Hartsfield School ground." Alison and Sharon con nue to be very involved with Merry Go Round. Alison having le the commi ee in the late 90's has returned as her Grandchildren are now a ending. Sharon stayed on as playgroup leader for many more years, eventually handing over to the current se ng manager Kay. "We are very lucky to have Kay, her deputy Emma, with a very dedicated and suppor ve staff team, some of whom have themselves been with Merry Go Round for many years, establishing the group and crea ng a stable environment." "I personally am amazed that the group, which originally sprung from two friends wan ng a mee ng place for themselves and other parents in the Town has survived for so long, and s ll goes from strength to strength. Merry go Round has many a ributes, but it is the dedica on of all those involved, past and present, which makes it the wonderful se ng that it is today. There are always ongoing ac vi es. The needs of maintaining the building, bringing in new technology and most importantly of all bringing innova ve, crea ve ideas for the sessions to provide fun and s mula ng development for each and every child who a ends. If the last 30 years are anything to go by, the next 30 will provide a lot of pleasure to many lucky children (one of whom is actually the daughter of my own youngest child, herself one of the founder children)" The children have been marking this special event in our history by plan ng a commemora ve tree and me capsule. They have released balloons as part of our Great Balloon Race. No celebra on is complete without a party. Our recent hugely successful Pirate & Princess party was a fun filled a ernoon for all those who a ended. NOVEMBER

News from Hartseld The second half of the Autumn Term is now upon us and the summer holidays are a dim and distant memory as we approach the fes ve season. The children have se led well into their new year groups and adapted to increased expecta ons. Our curriculum, as always, has been broad with themed events including Egyp an Day in Year 4 and Life in the 1940's linked to our World War II topic in Year 6. Year 5 a ended a Samba and Percussion session along with Ashwell School and we have had numerous spor ng 'friendlies' against local schools. One of our last events in October was a carved pumpkin compe on. Originally med to link in with our rescheduled Fireworks Event, pumpkins were carefully transported to school and winners were selected for each year group and the Friends of Hartsfield School awarded prizes. We are now looking forward to our Fireworks Event on 5th November. November marks the start of our Prospec ve Parent Tours for those families wishing to join us in September 2018. Dates are throughout November, December and Early January so please look on our website then ring or email the office if you wish to look around the school. We have our new Year 6 Ambassadors wai ng to take you on a tour.
Christmas prepara ons have begun (sorry to men on it), the teachers are planning seasonal performances and the gli er has been ordered! The Hartsfield Christmas Fair is on Saturday 25th November from 12-3 when we will have numerous stalls, food and drink and a raffle to tempt you. News from Sandon School We really value the sense of community spirit we have in our school and were delighted to find out Baldock Independent Beer Fes val were going to make a dona on to the school. Tara and Kate from the fes val presented us with a cheque for £500. We are hugely grateful and we have bought some new reading books and Forest School resources. Thank you so much to the fes val organisers! Mr Allcorn and Mr Musk will soon start their training to become Forest School Leaders. Forest School is an exci ng opportunity, which offers ALL learners regular opportuni es to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment. We are developing our wooded areas and we hope to develop a further area in the far corner of the field. We are in contact with the Woodland Trust to obtain some na ve saplings, which will be planted with the help of the children. The back of the field, beyond the running track is going to be used as a 'base camp' for our forest school. This will be an area with tree stumps to sit on where children will start and finish their forest school learning. Alongside the regenera on, we have decided to repurpose the outdoor stage. Although it has been enjoyed over the years,
it is now rather past it's prime. We are going to take it apart and hopefully reuse much of the wood during our Forest School ac vi es. If you are able to help us with this please come to grounds day on Saturday. To find out more about Forest Schools please follow the link to our training provider's website www.forestschoollearning.co.uk or look at their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ForestSchoolLearning. On November 30th we are really looking forward to having a circus schools workshop. The Buky family very kindly gave us a circus skills kit at the end of last term and Mrs Reynolds has arranged for the whole school to learn how to use all of the equipment. We will let you know how we get on in the next edi on. As we move closer to the fes ve season we are planning lots of different ac vi es. December the 1st will see our annual Decora ons Day. The children rotate around the four classes with their house team to make a variety of decora ons. We will be performing a whole school play and Recep on will lead our Na vity in the church on 18th December. On Saturday 16th December we will welcome a special Christmas guest and his elves to our Christmas market. There will be a variety of stalls and lots of Christmas cheer. All profits will be spent on resources that benefit our pupils. We would love to welcome you to our school Emma McGill - Headteacher

5 minutes with... ... Jenny Oakley from *How long have you farmed in Bygrave Road? Mark & I took over the Her ordshire county council smallholding in 1991 a er Mark's late father passed away suddenly at the age of 44. Gill & Harold Oakley had taken on the holding in 1982. We were only 20 & 21 yrs old when we found ourselves running our own farm. We had huge support from family & friends. *What do you grow on the farm? We have a rota on of arable – Wheat & Barley, this year for the first me we are growing sugar beet for Bri sh Sugar. We specialise in grass, growing seed hay for the racehorse industry, mixture hay which has become very popular with horses & ponies & a so meadow hay for the small pet industry. We bale as much Straw as the weather lets us, supplying equine, livestock & fuel too the power sta on market. Can't forget our Free Range Bronze & Black Turkeys for Christmas. We get in from day old in July & have them oven ready to take away straight off the farm on Christmas Eve…zero food miles! *Being a Smallholding have you had to diversify? Yes! Some me ago in the quieter months we started a fencing business, have built up a por olio of customers from Country Estates, Colleges, & local councils, covering commercial & domes c fencing. This business has grown significantly and now we employ a fantas c, experienced team fencing throughout the whole year. This year we are pleased to have our nephew join us as a fully qualified tree surgeon. He is very keen to grow this side of business within the family umbrella
and making good use of his arborist knowledge, we look forward to expanding our new Tree surgery business. With all of this we have become very busy 52 weeks of the year, keeping 6 people fully employed. *Do you get involved in community projects. In Baldock we were very pleased to have worked with Countryside Management. We did the stock fencing at Ivel Springs & put the water tanks in for the Long Horn Ca le. Our most recent job for the allotments @ Ivel Springs was extending the parking area with fencing & drainage (Which I hope is effec ve…Oh & by the way the huge runner beans were delicious thank you!) *Your Smallholding is right in the middle of the poten al Blackhorse development, how is going to affect your future business? It will in no doubt be devasta ng to our arable land, as the en re acreage will be built on. We hope that we will be able to con nue with the hay & straw all depending on finding land & storage elsewhere, but we fear nothing will replace the business we built here in Baldock over the past 26 years. The fencing & Tree surgery business could be moved more easily with us. If we had the choice we would never leave Baldock as we love living & working here. Finally we try to keep regular updates on our facebook pages you can find us @ h ps://www.facebook.com/Oakleyfarming h ps://www.facebook.com?mandjoakleyltd

November 2017 We have just had the 30th anniversary of the great storm of 1987 bringing back memories of how we woke up the morning after the storm to complete destruction, we had trees blown over and blocking the Wallington road, fences trashed roofs torn off some of our buildings but worse of all we had all of our green houses wrecked, except one of them that was lifted complete into the air moved three or four feet and put down intact apart for several sheets of glass missing when I say green houses I mean big horticultural green houses these were 100 ft long by 18 ft wide and we had six of them all heated and we were using them to grow strawberries, we had just started picking what was going to be our first autumn crop, it looked good but we will never know. the green houses had been lovingly rebuild by my Father in law Jim, Susan's Dad, when we moved in the year before they were in a terrible state and each one had to be taken apart, striped back to bare wood and repainted, then all of the glass had to be reinstalled, several hundred sheets in each house when he had finished they looked fantastic, everything we had dreamed of. We had installed new irrigation and reconditioned the hot water heating pipes, we were growing the variety called Ostara a good summer and late season heavy cropping plant if grown intensively and forced, we were growing them in hanging bags attached to the roof bars to gain maximum light and heat. It had all gone, I still shut my eyes and go back in time trying to imagine the power needed to lift a green house of that size full of hundreds of strawberry bags attached to the frames and then gently lower it to the ground complete. Back to reality, it seems that this season has been early then late and then back to early, so now the autumn phase is well and truly upon us and has given some wonderful leaf colour and berries, around the country, North Hertfordshire not so good as last year but not so far off, you can't expect perfection two years on the run. Last month I wrote about the harvest and it being early, unfortunately the weather has been messing with us again, it has stayed unseasonably mild in fact warm with winds blowing up from Spain on numerous occasions, this has caused rusts, scab, mildew slimes toad stools and mushrooms to appear in places and on crops not normally seen, the mild temperatures have also affected the storage potential of apples and pears, they have become senescent very early losing moisture and showing shrinkage, a high percentage of brown rots and mummification, pears have been breaking down from the core out, not showing any indication until you bite into them, not nice. We used to use an armoury of chemicals to prevent most of this but they have all been banned under various European laws, so the only way to store in the medium term is a coldish cellar lots of news paper and tissue, a shed or out building won't crack it unless the weather turns cold very soon and very cold. I don't have a cellar or cold store so I am out of luck this year, Spartan, Braeburn and Bramley seedling apples that are naturally long storage varieties will have to take us through till Christmas if we are lucky, Williams and Comice pears will hopefully do the same, Concord and Conference just wont make it so eat them while you can. Lots of reports of pests munching on vegetables due to the warm weather so damage to over wintering brassicas, by this time of the year most pests bug and other unwanted nasties should have disappeared , damage on ornamental crops should not be such a worry as any deciduous plants will drop their leaves fairly soon. Things to do in the garden in November, Still time to sow sweat pea seeds, prepared hyacinths should be planted or set on top of special water jars for Christmas flowering, you can carry on planting spring bulbs, follow my directions in last months write up, Dahlias need to be lifted while its still mild, although with Global heating some experts now say its safe to leave them in and just mulch them over, if you decide to lift them please stand them in a cool but frost free place and importantly stalks down so that moisture can drain out, dust them with sulphur if you can find some to help prevent rotting , watch out for mice eating the tubers and be aware that they will choose to eat your sweet peas first Now’s the time to start clearing your boarders and veg plots, get composting don’t put it in the very expensive brown bins, once that’s done you can start digging, yes everyone's favourite pastime, I wont go into the types of digging again we've done that, all I will suggest is try and keep the rotavator for when you have cleared the garden of weeds properly or you will have them multiplied by imaginable times and you will never see the end of them.
Fruit tree pruning should be well under way by now, if you need advice call in with photos of your trees and I will show you what to do. Now while on the subject of pruning I have a little reminder for two dear friends who live just north of Baldock station, if you don’t do something thing this year with your apple tree you might see Jack climbing up it in mistake for his bean stalk!!! Some thing I wanted to just point out is about Bonsai Trees at this time of year, we have recently had several people coming in looking for advice on their “ bonsai” tree, firstly if you haven't paid hundred s of pounds for it and got a certificate of authenticity then it isn't a “bonsai tree it is only a dwarf tree that will soon grow into a BIG tree, a very big tree, now there will be ways that you can keep it small and you will be able to enjoy it as such but you will have to work hard at it for several years and more, the tree will need special root pruning now if you don’t have the necessary skills to top prune you will never grasp the skills of root pruning, I have been shown how and I find it tricky, wire training the branches and controlling apical dominance is key to your success regular feeding and watering is also a skill you will need to master, now if I haven't put you off give it a go but don’t expect to get Japanese master results and skills within the first fifty years. What ever you do enjoy it, Cheers Graham. NOVEMBER

“Beaver's Got Talent" During this half term the beavers have been having lots of fun. Everyone was really excited to meet again, a er a scou ng free summer. The first week back, all of the beavers, cubs, & scouts met together at Wymondley Woods, and had a great me singing around the camp fire.
Over the whole of this half term, the beavers have been doing loads of work towards their sport & cycling badges, including one very damp evening at Hartsfield School. Despite the dismal weather, everyone worked hard, had fun, & earned their cyclist badges. Another one of the ac vi es the Beavers par cipated in recently, was "Beaver's Got Talent". This was an excellent opportunity for the Beavers to show off their skills. Everyone took part, and put loads of effort in to their performance. On top of this, all of the Beavers were courteous & respec ul of everyone else. It was a great evening. All in all, this half term has been super fun. Everyone has had a great me working together and learning new skills. The whole Colony is looking forwards to next half term, and preparing for Christmas. Swallow.

Hypnosis for Stress Na onal Stress Awareness Day 1st November 2017 What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is a natural state which we all experience almost on a daily basis. That me you were in a mee ng and your mind wandered off for a me, looking out of a train or bus window and becoming lost in your own thoughts and all the other mes we are aware of our surroundings but our mind is somewhere deep in thought – daydreaming. In this state of relaxa on (trance) we are in control and are aware but open to posi ve sugges ons. In this state of deep relaxa on the hypnotherapy session allows beneficial correc ons to be given directly to your unconscious mind.
Your unconscious is both a reservoir of issues and resources. Throughout your life you have learned, some mes uninten onally, to think and behave in certain ways. Most of these thoughts and behaviours are useful however some lead to feelings of inadequacy or pain. As these thoughts and behaviours are learned they can be unlearned and new posi ve programmes can be installed. While no one can be hypno sed against their will those who are willing to be guided into a hypno c state o en find the resources to change their thoughts and behaviours to posi ve ones.
What is Hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is simply the therapeu c treatment of medical and psychological issues using hypnosis as the medium. The use of hypnotherapy is recognised by the medical profession and indeed many doctors and den sts have trained in the use of hypnosis as o en it can succeed where other conven onal methods have failed. Some 85% of people will respond to hypnotherapy and when undertaken by a trained hypnotherapist can deliver results in a wide range of issues. As hypnosis is a natural experience it is safe and has no harmful side effects, indeed it is a truly relaxing experience. Edier M1380 2.1 Speakers A Compact Alternative For the past few weeks I have been tes ng the Edifier M1380 2.1 Speakers with Subwoofer and Satellites. As a music fan, I’ve always been a fan of external speakers both PC’s and MP3 players, so when a set of Edifier M1380 speakers arrived at my office, I was eager to give them a try. The M1380 speakers come with a high quality 5 inch subwoofer bass unit, two satellite tweeters and a wired controller for both mu ng and controlling the volume. Bass is adjusted by a control knob on the side of the subwoofer with a 3.5mm audio line-in cable and speaker out connectors for the tweeters. The subwoofer feels weighty, which gives you confidence that the bass reproduc on is going to be good in, the build materials also feel very sturdy. The
subwoofer outputs 12W, it’s not up to ‘block party’ standards, but it’s perfectly loud enough to please someone as a bedroom and is complimented by the the tweeter speakers outpu ng at 8W each. The satellite speakers are elevated to a height of 6 inches which gives the sound the freedom to travel rather than be adsorbed by surrounding furniture and is crisp and pleasant to listen to. The speakers have been balanced with each other, meaning they work together to produce a rich, pleasant sound and don't interfere with each other by oversatura ng different frequencies. The speaker volume is controlled via a small table mounted dial and mute switch. I like this kind of set up as it allows to to easily adjust the speaker volume by si ng the controller next to
your keyboard if you are using them as PC speakers. It also offers a headphone socket, allowing you to plugin your favourite pair without having to reach around behind the speaks and fumble around. Edifier are very good at producing a rac ve audio equipment and the M1380 con nues this with a modern, ma e black setup which would fit in most surroundings and not look out of place. The price point for the speaker system is around the £49 mark, this feels like great value for such a quality product. If you are looking for a cost effec ve set of speakers which would suit students heading off for university, these are a great choice. Ma Porter - The Gadget Man www.thegadgetman.org.uk

Fabulous Wallpaper Wallpaper has had a resurgence of late and now we're sublimely spoilt for choice. Looking for wallpaper ideas? Try a floral feature wall in the bedroom, statement geometrics in the living room or a folksy design for a kid's room; there really are so many unique ways to hang wallpaper in your home. So from pre y florals to bold prints, get inspired by some of the best wallpaper designs. You won't be disappointed.
All you need is one fabulous feature wall to really make a room stand out. Whether you want to make a statement, or simply have a small space that needs to impress without overwhelming. Why not use it to line your bedroom or living room? It has the power to make look cosy, not cramped, and larger rooms grand instead of stark. Will you choose a cheeky floral or modern graphic number, paper that has been surfaceprinted, digitally printed? Will you paper one wall or all four? We prefer the la er- if you're going to get wet, you might as well go swimming…. Choosing Wallpaper - How Will Wallpaper Patterns Affect My Room? Wall coverings increase visual interest by adding pa ern, texture and accent colour to a room. They are a drama c way to define a room style. For example, a bold abstract print immediately establishes a contemporary style, while a small floral design will suggest a more tradi onal or country theme. Large pa erns add the most visual interest to a room. They can also make a room seem smaller and more in mate. Large pa erns on all the walls with plain, light ceilings help retain a sense of height when design elements have a ver cal thrust. Geometric prints give a greater impression of con nuous space when applied to all the walls. Large geometric pa erns can be bold and exci ng, while small pa erns can be very subtle. Pa erns with strong ver cal lines make a ceiling seem higher. Horizontal stripes make a room seem wider. Diagonal stripes give a direc on and create movement. Small prints add a touch of pa ern to the overall background colour, forming a subtle backdrop. Mini prints in light, cool colours and fine textures applied to the walls create a feeling of more space in a small room. If the mini print is in a warm, dark colour, the opposite response occurs. They are o en used in kitchens, bathrooms and other small spaces. Textures such as a heavy grass cloth or expanded vinyl, create dimension, interest and surface quality. They create shadows and slight colour differences for a more interes ng wall surface.
Easy Decorating Paste the wall wallpapers offer a great alterna ve to the tradi onal wallpaper hanging method. The main advantage of paste the wall wallpaper is that the wallpaper adhesive goes directly onto the wall so no need for pas ng tables and the associated s ckiness. You simply apply your dry wallpaper onto an adhesive covered wall, trim to size and it's as simple as that – no gloopy mess and no soaking. Ready Mixed Adhesive will ensure that you get a professional finish when hanging your chosen wallpaper. Made from a special blend of starch deriva ves, resin emulsion and just the right amount of PVA glue, this wallpaper adhesive is already prepared for convenience. On the 2nd of December 2015 a very unhappy lady walked through my Slimming World doors. Having been to see her Doctor, Monica was advised to lose weight and hence given a referral to Slimming World for 12 weeks membership. Well this lady ran with it. A er 12 weeks Monica decided to stay as a paying member and in just 13 months transformed herself from a size 24 to a size 12. (She is now a 10 by the way and would kill me if I didn't put that in!) Monica says “the dogs never had shorter legs! Laugh, but I didn't really go out walking, ever, and now I love it. Now I have so much energy and I love the healthy ea ng plan that FOOD OPTIMISING is I don't even miss all the rubbish I used to eat, and I now have to walk the dog then take her back home and then carry on! She's an old lady now and I feel fit as a fiddle, all thanks to the support I get in group from my Slimming World family, I call it family cos everyone cares about each other, never judges and knows what it feels like physically and mentally to be overweight.
I've made friends at group and we go walking together. I was surprised to learn that its not how fast you go that ma ers its how FAR you go, so walking suits me brilliantly (and as I get fi er I'm going further and faster!) If you would like to learn more then just turn up to one of our sessions to hear the NEW MEMBER TALK, it starts at 9.30am, 5.30 or 7.30pm every Wednesday and costs £4.95 a week. As the dark nights draw in and the weather gets worse, this is the me of the year we dread. The me when our matches can get called off due to waterlogged and frozen pitches! However we are already behind on our league games due to our cup runs, which we are not complaining about because of the great support and media coverage we have had, but it does see us playing catch up already. Sadly, being unable to beat Aylesbury back in September, we are now out of the Emirates FA Cup but we s ll have a space in the FA Vase compe on. Now we have to focus on the league table and ge ng some games played. We have been hit by a couple of serious injuries which has meant some reshuffling, but the team do go from strength to strength under the leadership of Luke Gregson. At the me of going to press, Baldock Town FC sit at posi on 8 in the league table, but with 2 games behind the leaders and only 10 points, we are looking forward to ge ng some more wins under our belts to get us up to a higher posi on before Christmas. With Southall si ng at the top of the league table we were the first club this season to hold them to a draw and take a point off them. Our resident mascot team the Baldock Town Youth FC Under 10's have been ever present at our games and it has been lovely to see some of the other youngsters who play come along to watch or retrieve footballs! There is always a job that needs doing on match days and we don't mind if you just come now and then or if you want to help out more o en, please come and join us! You can always find our fixtures on our website, we have a twi er feed and we are on Facebook! So plenty of ways to keep up with us if you can't come to the games! If there are any budding reporters out there who would like to do a match report for our program or website please do! With the Remembrance Sunday service being held on November 12th, both the senior team and the youth team will be laying wreaths, we think this is the first me ever, in memory of all our brave servicemen and women. Kian McAdam and Pinky Parker will be represen ng the Clubs. Admission on match days is just £5 for adults, concessions are £3. Under 16's are free and programs are just £1 We have fundraising 'Curry Nights' which are always fun £20 per head and a lot of the footballers a end them, we have unusual raffle prizes and anything can be won from a framed piece of spor ng memorabilia to a smelly sock! If you look on the website you can see when our next curry night is and let us know if you want to come! We have a licensed bar at our ground share at Arlesey Town FC and it has a great func on room for anyone looking to hold a celebra on. There is also the snack bar where hot food, tea and coffee can be purchased. Pinky Parker NOVEMBER

How to keep pets safe & happy during reworks
Whilst Bonfire Night and all the fireworks are very exci ng for us humans, it’s not the same for our pets who don't have a clue what's going on, the sudden loud bangs can be terrifying. Here are a couple of ps for pet owners, so you can make sure your furry friends get through the firework displays with as li le stress or disrup on as possible. 1. Create a safe haven for your pet to hide in - For dogs, a cupboard under the stairs or a table draped with a blanket is a great place for them to retreat to. It’s a good idea to have this ready in advance and encourage them to use it before the event so they have the opportunity to get used to this new spot before the fes vi es kick off. 2. Remember that flashing lights are scary too - It’s important to remember it’s not just the noise of the fireworks that’s unse ling for pets, it’s also the light. Reduce the chance of flashes by keeping your lights on and pulling your curtains shut. Keeping the TV or radio on will also help mask some of the sudden bangs. 3. Distract them - Wherever your pet decides to se le for the night, a long las ng chew or toy can be a great distrac on from the noise going on outside.

4. Try your best to keep them indoors - Also, try and keep your pet indoors when fireworks are going off in your neighbourhood. Escape-proof your home! Cats (and even some dogs) can squeeze into surprisingly ght spots, so have a look around your house and block off any dangerous or unsuitable areas your pets may get into. 5. Act normal - Animals are very percep ve and if they no ce you’re behaving unusually (like following them around or being overly affec onate); they’ll sense something is up. If they see that the fireworks have no effect on you, this may help decrease their anxiety. 6. Make sure they're tagged - If worst comes to worst and your pet does happen to run away, make sure they can be iden fied (with ID tags and microchipping) so they can be reunited with you if found.
