PROFESSOR PROFILE: LARRY QUINN RACHAEL RICE
As the Vietnam War climaxed when Quinn was young, he served our country as a Navy Pilot. He jumped at opportunities to teach incoming pilots within his program. After returning from war, Quinn pursued a career at Xerox as a leading Sales Associate where he was recognized for talent development among his team. After retiring in North Carolina, Quinn was soon offered an opportunity within High Point University in our grassroots of growth under President Nido Qubein in 2011 to start and develop the Sales Program and Concentration. During our interview, Quinn, with confidence stated, “This is the best point of my entire life. With the help of Dean Wehrley, we were able to offer a Sales Major and Minor in 2013, which has grown from 50 to now 560 students within the Marketing and Sales Department.” Coaching and nurturing others to overcome their fears is marked within Larry Quinn’s DNA, and has developed our students’ framework around Quinn’s notable and respected reputation among our campus community.
When posed the question, “Why do you find your job fulfilling?”, Quinn responds with the point that he has always strived to teach others, “I taught others as a pilot in the Navy when fighting in Vietnam because I didn’t want others to be afraid- I wanted them to be confident in their talents”. His whole life is embedded with this desire to coach and nurture others to overcome their fearswhich is evident in his classroom objectives in his Sales and Negotiations courses when students are prompted to create and practice their Two-Minute Drill and Pitch. Interested in taking a class of Quinn’s next semester? His favorite class to teach is his Negotiations class. Quinn states, “It’s a revelation to students and me to plan and execute a strategy when the stakes are high”. He also notes the importance of student’s ‘ROI’ on their education and in turn values teaching salary negotiations. When prompted what Quinn enjoys most about mentoring his students he states, “I love bringing joy to someone else; teaching how to sell yourself is foundational skill that will take you far in life. I love you guyshonestly”. Quinn’s care for his students truly emulates his diligence in helping undergraduates find the career of their dreams. Never be afraid to stop by his office in Cottrell to talk about your future.

HALEY BOSSART When we discuss sporting confidence and emulating the best version of ourselves, that doesn’t always refer to the fashion or beauty categories. Nano, a 26-year-old ‘girl boss’ from North Palm Beach discovered her confidence through an internship with Abercrombie & Fitch. Graduating from Duke, she found her passion in arts and crafts. Nano developed an interest towards stamping cuffs, and this hobby eventually grew into a small business: Cuffed by Nano. As Nano put it, “I wasn’t really born with the gene that says “don’t do this – you could fail.” She continued to pursue her passions and dreamsturning what she thought to be a calling, into her life. She loved the idea of women wearing personality on their wrists or fingers. Nano’s target market occupies the demographic of females ages 19 to 28. She bonds well with her customer because she is one of them! She is growing, maturing, and ready to take on the world while wearing her confidence. To gain more clientele, she created a college ambassador program. Through promoting Cuffed by Nano, her business has grown tremendously. Cuffed by Nano sells stamped jewelry from cuffs to chokers. There is room for customization as well, which is key for the millennial target market. With this being said, there is something that makes this company unique. Nano has been traveling to Haiti with her family for more than 10 years. She has gained a passion in helping those in need through the design and customization aspects of her company. A big piece of her business and mission is the #buyonegivetwo model, which donates 1 week’s worth of tuition + 1 meal to a child in Haiti with every item purchased. Cuffed by Nano is the definition of a company that has grown from passion and confidence. Today, the opportunities are endless for the brand. Nano took what she loved and turned it into something tangible and REAL. One’s confidence grows through creation. Nano’s advice to On Point readers is to, “Never be afraid to fail. Even if you have that voice in your head, the worst thing that could happen is you could fail and move on. It is better to be a has-been than a never-was.” Nano wants all college students to know, “Don’t be confined to the basic career paths of times past! I went to a school where the majority of people went down a small handful of career paths. I knew those weren’t for me and I tried something different.”
“Think outside the box.”
LIVY BEANER High Point University is a hub for entertainment. Not only is the theatre department busy at work, the music department at High Point is equally as involved in offering creative entertainment to our university’s students. With Monday Movie Nights featuring a rotation of trending movies in the cinema, as well as Throwback Thursdays, the Chamber Music Series and other monthly stage shows, High Point University does not fall short in the entertainment category for its students.
THE THEATRE DEPARTMENT
WHAT’S TOPSY TURVY (SHOWING APRIL 12TH-15TH) HAPPENING IN HIGH POINT AND AMONGST HIGH POINT’S CAMPUS?
According to the Theatre Department, “Topsy-Turvy World is one of the silliest, most mind-bending plays of all time, yet it has never been produced! Perhaps it is impossible naval battle in the Third Act? Or the final act’s vertiginous play-within-a-play-within-a-play?” The play bounces between varying eras and locations- creating a Seuss-like world with no rhyme or reason needed. “ What begins as a pleasant evening at the theatre devolves into sweet anarchy as The Playwright watches his own play be taken over by the audience and testy actors switching characters mid-show. Issuing from the mind of the great German Romanticist Ludwig Tieck, Topsy-Turvy outstrips all the meta-theatrical tricks of today long before it was vogue.”
THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT FRIDAY, MARCH 23RD: The Spring Percussion Ensemble Concert will offer audience members the opportunity to experience the broad range of melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and timbral qualities of this unique ensemble. From soloists and small chamber works, to full ensemble selections, this concert is sure to leave you tapping your foot and humming a few memorable melodies! The HPU Percussion Ensemble is composed of High Point’s own students- featuring both music and other majors. This group works incredibly hard to create a reputable ensemble to achieve this level of excellence.
FRIDAY, APRIL 6TH: Please join High Point University’s Department of Music for a Jazz Ensemble Concert.
FRIDAY, APRIL 13TH marks the date of High Point University’s bi-annual concert featuring R &
B and Rap artist T-Pain. Middle school feels like another life away, and student’s will have the opportunity to relive the days of a few of our generation’s favorite throwbacks including “Cyclone, ”“Low,” and even “Buy U A Drank”. Additionally, a few of High Point’s own students will be opening for the King of Party Anthems: T-Pain.

His travels around the globe as one of rap’s most in-demand performers combined with his conversations with political activists and his genre-straddling work with Idle Warship and others caused Kweli to realize that he was limited in a sense, a prisoner of sorts of his own success as one of the world’s best rappers with something significant to say.”

GET FIT WITH LORI
GINA FIGLIOZZI Located on West Lexington Avenue, FIT HUB is in the heart of High Point- offering a comfortable and inviting environment for personal training services, group classes, and nutrition consulting. It’s the gym you never knew you needed. FIT HUB, owned by Lori Teppara, a certified Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor, Exercise Physiologist, and Nutritionist, is a boutique fitness studio where it is all about you. On Point sat down with Lori to get the inside scoop of what makes FIT HUB so special, how it all started, and how Lori, the stunning mom of three, leads a healthy and balanced lifestyle amid her busy schedule. WHY DID YOU START FIT HUB? “We officially opened our doors in August of 2017. Being a busy mom of three and the wife of a surgeon, I needed a job that would allow me to make my own hours and would be walking distance away from home.” FIT HUB was the answer, “I love it. I have all of my toys here in one place and it’s my own space.” WHAT MAKES FIT HUB UNIQUE? “A boutique studio where we cap our classes at 10 people. TRX classes are capped at 5. We offer a personalized workout program based upon your needs with either a personal training session, group training, or through our classes. All of our trainers are certified or have exercise related degrees. It’s perfect for those who don’t want to work out in front of a lot of people they don’t know, but who may still want to bring their friends to workout together. You get your own private workout with your trainer and you can make it what you want. It is 100% customizable. We can accommodate whatever it is you’re looking for. I am a big functional trainer so I make sure to implement that element in everything I do, but FIT HUB allows you the opportunity to rely on your trainer to coach you through everything while also making it a fun and enjoyable experience. You’re guaranteed a great workout every time.”
WHAT CAN FIT HUB OFFER COLLEGE STUDENTS? “You’re not thrown into a big gym, so it’s not intimidating. It’s an intimate setting with a great atmosphere where you know everyone. You get a great workout while still enjoying yourself in the process! This is my outlet and I feel as though a lot of people can use exercise as their outlet as well. Endorphins flow after 20 minutes of exercise...endorphins are what people need, and you get it here. Best of all, we can focus on you. You don’t need to be a member, you pay session by session so you have plenty of flexibility, and you pick the hours- and the playlist!” WHAT DO YOU DO TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? “Moderation. Everything in moderation! You need to fuel your body and watch what you put into it. You need to workout regularly, but not so much to overexert yourself. I keep a healthy diet, full of fruits and vegetables and I make sure I get enough protein. Complex carbohydrates are a must, I limit my simple carbs. I cross train and I encourage everyone else to as well! Being in my 40’s, I’ve realized that in your 20’s, you can get away with a lot more- but once you get passed them, your knees are screaming, your back is screaming, so in my routine, I target everything when it comes to my workout while still avoiding over compensating. Listening to your body is so important no matter what age you are.” WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR GIRLS TRYING TO LEAD A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE OR START A NEW EXERCISE REGIME? “Just get started. You’ll see what you like and what you don’t. There is so much out there- you are destined to find something you love. Everybody’s strengths are different and you will always be intimidated by something but until you try it, you will never know. That’s why I love FIT HUB- it’s comfortable and secure. Most of our classes are all women which also applies to our staff. I say, just get started and don’t wait. You will find something you love, guaranteed. And of course, everything in moderation.” DO YOU OFFER ANY DISCOUNTS OR PACKAGES? “Yes! On our website, we will always have updates on our special offers. Currently, we have partnered with Yoga Mindset for $60 unlimited classes at both locations for a month. Typically, it’s $15 per class if you buy a block of ten or, $20 for each class individually. Personal training is $60 an hour for one person, $75 for two people split, and three or more people is $90 a session where you’re able to split the cost as well. The more people you work out with, the less expensive it gets.” WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR FIT HUB FOR THE FUTURE? “I don’t think I want to make it a franchise. I like the small setting and the intimacy associated with the idea of a boutique gym. My current goal is to offer more classes, attract more instructors, and of course keep our clientele full and relevant. We never do two training sessions at one time, so there is limited growth just because keeping it personable and comfortable is so important to us.” A personalized workout, intimate setting, amazing trainers, and a guaranteed good time…sign up at FIT HUB’s location or online to make tangible steps in building upon your own active lifestyle.
WITH DEVIN TREGER
AN INTERVIEW WITH DEVIN TREGER
MAKENZIE KING
Yoga has increasingly become a growing practice across the globe. Millions of individuals set time aside out of their hectic schedules to pursue this unique meditation practice. Researchers have studied how yoga impacts individual’s lifestyles in all aspects of wellness as the findings have shown many benefits to the practice of yoga. How life changing is yoga, realistically speaking? I felt that this question could best be explained by an every-day yogi, as opposed to a paid yoga professional. This is a real-life testimonial to the wonders of yoga. Devin Treger, 22, has been a yogi for about 8 years and continues to incorporate yoga into her everyday lifestyle. When Devin first began practicing, she was in high school. She states that her “motivation behind picking the practice up, at first, was to simply reap the physical benefits.” When she saw such benefits throughout her practice, she continued to embrace the habit. Upon arriving to college, she lost touch with yoga. College is a big adjustment and Devin felt that she no longer had time for her practice. Ultimately, she picked it back up by attending scheduled yoga classes at her college’s gym. After continuing this schedule for a couple of weeks she “remembers leaving classes and having an indescribable feeling—it was almost like a yoga high.” She spoke to how the yoga instructor inspired her to be curious into the deeper meanings behind yoga. These deeper meanings are composed of aspects that go far beyond just the physical. To her, those aspects are what helped yoga become a habitual practice. Upon picking yoga back up again, she began to notice physical benefits first. She reports that she possessed more fluidity during workouts. Soon after that, she began to see an increased range of motion and flexibility. For internal physical benefits, she embraced the fact that yoga aims to slow down heart rates; thus, creating calmness throughout. Additionally, yoga aids in her digestive system which is highly beneficial to human bodies. On the other hand, yoga has helped Devin thrive in the area of mental wellness and stability. She feels as if yoga allows her to remove herself from what’s going on inside her head, and look at it from a “third person perspective.” It creates space for detachment of the every-day stresses that take over her life. After time practicing, she soon noticed that it provided her with a more open perspective. She learned to be a better listener and a better friend. She states that the biggest mental benefit is that “yoga inspires kindness.” Like anything in life, there will always be road blocks or challenges presented. The biggest challenge posed to Devin is the obstacle of consistency. Taking even a few days off from her practice puts her in a position where she has to weigh her priorities and decide what is keeping her from practicing yoga.
A dditionally, she speaks to the challenges she has seen other individuals face while practicing. She explains that “you don’t come to yoga because you already know how to touch your toes. You come to yoga to help you in the areas you wish to improve upon.” Whenever she practices yoga in a group, she encourages individuals to close their eyes. This helps them to be within themselves and among their interpersonal goals: to not look at another person’s ability and begin to think your ability isn’t good enough. When asked if she would recommend this practice to women looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle, she says, “100% yes.” Devin explains that this changed her in a physical, mental, and spiritual way. Practicing yoga has taught her that there are things far bigger than herself; she feels more connected to the universe around her. She says that yoga has taught her mindfulness, which everyone could find value in. The schedule she operates on would not be possible to accomplish every-day if she did not find mindfulness through yoga. Above everything, she would say the most important realization she has come to know through yoga is that, “healthy activity breeds healthy activity.” What she means is that if you start treating your body, mind, and soul properly and healthy in one aspect, this tends to influence healthier lifestyle choices in all other areas of one’s life. To conclude Treger’s testimonial, I asked if there was anything she wanted people to know about the practice of yoga, that typically isn’t discussed among society, or in the media. She stands behind the idea that the biggest lesson people should embrace while practicing yoga is the art of showing up. It doesn’t matter what age, race, sex, or body type someone has. She explains that there are so many different variations that accommodate any area of concern that keeps individuals from truly practicing. For anyone that is curious in practicing yoga- find a space that works for youthe only thing stopping you is forgetting to simply try. She ends by saying, “yoga hasn’t discriminated against any individual, and never will.” It has been life-changing for Devin to habitually practice yoga. She went from having a substantial amount of built up anxiety, causing her to doubt herself in every aspectto adopting a lifestyle practice that allows her to do what she was truly missing in life: loving herself. To her, and millions of others including myself, she believes that adopting such mindset can breed nothing but future successes.
LOVE
YOURSELF
1
Growing up, my mother always had a funny way of teaching me valuable life lessons. One lesson that always resonated within me was the following: “If you want a ‘bikini body’, all you need to do is get a bikini and put it on your body”. I always assumed she was coming from a place of humor- however as I get older- it soon became clear that she was really teaching me the value behind loving myself. Everyone wants to look and feel beautiful. However, life is full of surprises and some of those unfortunate circumstances have an all-encompassing negative impact on how you view yourself and the world around you. Whether you just left behind a toxic relationship or you feel inferior to the models you see in magazines and television shows; these scenarios can lead women to lose interest in their selfworth themselves altogether. We as women at times even tend to evade situations in which we feel self-conscious and uncomfortable- and in doing so, women so often miss out on opportunities that bring happiness and enjoyment to our lives. Spring, for most women, means the beginning of sunshine and bikini season. For some, this can trigger an abundance of stress, especially within the subliminal conscious. Visions painted by the media have caused unrealistic views regarding one’s internal meaning behind feeling beautiful and the value of loving yourself- specifically in a bikini. While women who model can certainly be defined as beautiful, this is not the only version of what beauty is. In fact, the most beautiful thing about a woman is how deeply and widely she loves herself. Therefore, loving yourself, specifically during this spring season, should be universally adopted by women in every modernized society. I am a firm believer that loving yourself stems from following these steps.
MAKENZIE KING
Check your immediate surroundings
for explanations to your overall unhappiness. The saying is true: Birds of a feather flock together. While this widely known concept could be explained in a multitude of ways, the meaning behind the sentiment is always static: you are who you surround yourself by. If you surround yourself by unhappy individuals, or people that have negative viewpoints on life and themselves- you are more likely to adopt their mindset. Cleansing your interpersonal life in this way is one of the biggest steps to loving who you are.
2
Set aside time for yourself,
and preferably, by yourself. Take a dip in an ocean! If you live by the water you have no excuse- it’s the perfect time of the year for this endeavor. Salt water has numerous benefits that go far beyond relaxation. The sea has been known to contain nutrients and minerals that can be one of the best remedies for your skin. If you don’t live near the ocean, take time out of your week to do something you love to do, like reading a novel or seeing a new movie, for example.
3
Change aspects of your life that you have control over.
A big aspect behind women loving themselves, specifically within this generation, is their physical appearance. While, I will not promote any superficial value a woman holds, if you feel as if you need a lifestyle change that you have control over, do it! According to The Center for Adolescent Health, diet and exercise are the two biggest changes that occur in women’s lives during their adolescent years going into their adulthood. Find a system that works for you and stick to it! This can mean healthier alternatives to your usual meals or simply just hitting the gym more than once in a blue moon. During this time, it may be beneficial to remember the 21/90 rule. This rule explains that it typically takes 21 days to form a habit, and 90 days to turn that habit into a lifestyle.
Accept aspects you have no control over.
4
Once you have actively modified the controllable aspects of your life, it’s time for the hardest step in the journey of loving yourself: acceptance. Best said by Ke$ha: We are who we are. Maybe you absolutely despise having oily, acne-prone skin. While your skin will always be what it is, there are numerous products that complement each skin type. Another equally stressing issue for women is their body shape. While I mentioned that you can modify your body through diet and exercise, everyone is born into different body shapes- and you’re just as beautiful for what makes you unique. During bikini season, varying shapes in body can provide as a major influence as to whether or not women choose to be public in a bikini. Experts have researched and studied women’s’ body shapes and discovered that each differing type has a complimentary style of bathing suit. If you are unhappy about how your appearance in a certain style bikini, don’t sweat it! It’s all about finding the right one for your body shape.
To drive my point home: Spring is one of the most stressful times of the year. The pressures behind spring break and bikini season leave women feeling insecure. In embracing these insecurities, you put yourself at risk of missing out on valuable experiences and wonderful memories. If you, or anyone you know, struggles with loving themselves, know this: You are not alone, and you certainly don’t have to feel this way forever. Following these steps will bring you that much closer to loving yourself in your entirety. When you’re out in the sunshine this spring, rocking your bikini body; don’t forget to wear a smile. The act of smiling is contagious and emulates to the world that you’re comfortable and content with every beautiful part about yourself, and to me, that’s truly empowering.
SKINCARE TIPS FOR THE SEASON CYDNEY WEBB
As the seasons change and warmer weather arrives, your skins reactions will be changing with the climate as well. Even though a drier, harsher season is leaving, that doesn’t mean daily moisturizing and protection should also leave your skincare routine. The key to healthy, happy skin is hydration, protection, and exfoliation year-round. Here are the top 5 tips for taking care of your skin this season:
1
Invest in an SPF moisturizer- Wearing a moisturizer with SPF is essential in protecting your skin against the harsh UV rays of spring and summer. Taking care of your skin now will prevent dark spots and wrinkles from forming as you age. Shiseido’s White Lucent All Day Brightener (Broad Spectrum SPF 22) can be used as a moisturizer alone or on top of a moisturizer- for those with dryer skin- as a protective layer. This moisturizer acts as a sunscreen and powerful brightener all-in-one that reduces dark spots and corrects uneven skin tones. A less expensive alternative I’ve tried and enjoyed is Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Sheer Daily Moisturizer (Broad Spectrum SPF 30), which also brightens skin over time.
3
Collagen Face Mask- The recent rave about collagen is one I’ve found myself to support. Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins found in the body that delivers strength and youthful elasticity to the skin, hair and nails. The natural production of collagen decreases as one ages, so it’s never too early to begin reversing life’s expected aging processes. Specifically, in the summer when skin tends to become dry and red in the sun, collagen is vital for hydration and offers a skin-plumping benefit to users. A simple sheet mask which supports natural collagen synthesis in the skin is Dr. Jart+’s Dermask Water Jet Vital Hydra Solution- a necessary beauty product as the climate fluctuates.
2 4 5
Drink A LOT of water- Dry skin means your skin is lacking oil, while dehydrated skin means you are lacking water. Drinking at least two liters per day is one of the healthiest, and most natural way to keep your body aligned and skin in total balance. My favorite glass+silicone bottle to carry around is my BKR—grab one here: https://mybkr.com
Exfoliate 2-3 Times a Week- Being outside more often than in the winter this season can expose your skin to harsh dirt and toxins circulating in the air. Exfoliating regularly during warmer months helps in protecting against these free radicals and dirt that can cause damage to your skin. Through consistent exfoliation, dead skin cells layered with dirt and oil that sit on the surface of your skin can be removed. A gentle exfoliator great for all skin types, and packed with rose oil and vitamin-C, is Korres’ Wild Rose Exfoliating Cleanser.
Use A Facial Spray- Investing in a facial spray filled with hydrating ingredients is a great method to quickly freshen up your appearance throughout a long day. As temperatures rise, most people tend to sweat more and claim that their makeup doesn’t last as long throughout the day. A facial spray can be used to set makeup, rejuvenate tired-looking skin, and add extra hydration on-the-go. One of the most coveted facial sprays in the beauty world currently is Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater.

RENT FASHION FROM GIRLS ON YOUR CAMPUS MAGGIE GOBLE
Imagine yourself scrolling through Instagram the day after a big sorority formal- post after post features imagery of dresses you’re in love with. The idea of asking to borrow clothing can be uncomfortable, but now, thanks to Curtsy, fashion followers can embrace expensive trend without the costly price tag. Curtsy is an application that provides female college students with the opportunity to rent dresses and other clothing items from each other within their campus. Women can browse the closets of people in the area and post their own dresses for rent for a monetary exchange, therefore incentivizing the applications available products to potential consumers. Curtsy is currently owned by Ole Miss alumni Eli Allen, David Oates, and William Ault. The app is free to download on any Apple device and includes “Curtsy Coverage,” a $5 fee from the borrower to cover any damages that may occur. Curtsy seems like a dream come true, but I wanted to learn more. Below is a Q&A with Eli Allen, Founder and Head of Engineering.
WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND CURTSY? “Curtsy is the brainchild of one of our founders, William Ault, and his friend Sara Kiparizoska. During his final semester at Ole Miss, William realized that on a typical college campus, there are thousands of women who are seeking a unique fashion ensemble for an upcoming event, and there are just as many who have rarely worn these items that just occupy space in their wardrobes.” William recognized that there is a supply-and-demand for formal dresses specifically on a college campus’, but there was no existing way for the renter who needs an item to find the owner who has exactly what the renter needs. In the final weeks of the school year, William and Sara worked together to formulate the idea for an application on the iPhone that closed the circuit between peers. This marked the beginnings of what we know today as Curtsy. “William and I were classmates in the Computer Science Department at Ole Miss, and when he pitched the idea to me right before graduation- I told him I was in. We started work on Curtsy the week after graduation in May of 2015. During the winter of that same year, our current CEO David Oates joined our team. We officially launched Curtsy at Ole Miss in January 2016. After our first semester at Ole Miss, we were joined by our current Head of Marketing, Clara Agnes Ault, and moved to California after receiving funding from Y Combinator among Silicon Valley’s elite. In Fall 2016, we started expanding to other college markets throughout the country. Ever since we’ve been focused on growing our team- getting Curtsy to new locations, and in the process improving the app and overall rental experience for our consumers.”
WHAT MAKES CURTSY UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CLOTHING RENTAL COMPANIES? Curtsy has a few unique qualities that set us apart: 1.It’s cheaper. Because we never hold our own inventory, we have low overhead and can keep our prices much lower than any alternative clothing rental option. 2.It’s quicker. Because Curtsy is local, it’s the only place that you can try on and rent an item the day you actually need to wear it. Other options require more planning and aren’t as forgiving if your item doesn’t fit. 3.It’s a way to make money. No other option allows you to keep your own items in your closet and rent them out whenever you need to make a few extra bucks.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITH TEAM CURTSY? “I love how quickly we can bring an idea from conception to fruition. Because we are a small team- and we’re always receptive to new ideas- it’s not uncommon for us to come up with a new feature in the application or a new marketing campaign in the morning and have it ready to go by end-of-day. There aren’t many other places I could work where we’d have the opportunity to be so quick to our followers.”
HOW IT WORKS
WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED ALONG THE WAY? “The biggest challenge for us is the obstacle of seeking quick growth quickly. We are trying to do something that hasn’t been done well before- with this being said, there is a lot we don’t know or understand about our customers and what appeals to them in a broader sense. We are constantly developing upon ideas and trying new things within our facet, and the challenge is finding things that really work well and implementing within all of our different college communities. Additionally, Curtsy also has a team among each involved campus, which poses as a challenge when hiring and training the teams- therefore limiting how quickly we’re able pioneer onto new campuses.”
WHAT BRANDS ARE MOST POPULAR TO RENT ON CURTSY? “A few of our most popular brands are NBD, BCBG, Lovers + Friends, For Love and Lemons, and Tobi.”
WHERE DO YOU SEE CURTSY IN 5 YEARS? “Our ultimate goal for Curtsy is to make the application one where more clothing is rented as opposed to being purchased. There is a lot of waste within the fashion industry and we feel that we hold an opportunity to reduce consumption by making high-end fashion more accessible- and affordable. We plan to make Curtsy available to everyone by continuing to expand to new universities and cities. We’re also going to release a shipping option this March. This would allow the 100,000+ items already available on Curtsy the opportunity to rent or purchase to anyone in the United States.” William continues, “We just recently launched a pop-up shop in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where owners can deposit their items, while renters can come in and try them on and rent if it fits appropriately. If this endeavor proves to be successful, then our team will continue to work on opening new Curtsy pop-ups in varying cities. This would not only allow our customer the option to use the app and meet up with the owner independently like the current business model presents, or they can go to the pop-up shop and rent similarly. Whatever we do, the goal is always to make fashion more accessible to our customer.” Check out Curtsy on the App Store to learn more about the brand’s mission and business model.
LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD
CHRISTIANA BELLUSCI
Being a women at any age in today’s society where beauty standards are so subjective is no easy task. According to APS, the Association for Psychological Science, within 7 seconds of seeing a person, a first impression is created. With that being said, it is a norm to be speculative, and perhaps even judgemental in our first social interactions with others. With social platforms growing exponentially day-by-day, each woman emulates and perpetuates confidence differently. Social media has the power in modern society to either boost one’s self-image in a glimpse or tear it away just as fast. Scrolling through a social newsfeed, we perceive “perfect” in the bodies and faces of unrealistic & edited models- and inherently, our personal insecurities develop and unfortunately, grow. The greatest way to alter and embrace your self-image is through self-expression, specifically in one’s clothing and accessory choices.
Your personal presence, particularly in the fashion elements you choose to integrate into your day-by-day wardrobe reflect something what scientists have coined enclothed cognition. According to the Huffington Post, researchers have proven that your outfit may alter how you approach and interact with the world around you. Many may argue that the greatest boost of confidence for a woman is the act of dressing with intention: when you look good, you feel good. Whether this entails following popular trend in outfit curation, or rejecting the ‘expected’ in hopes of standing out- when your presence coincides with how you feel internally, you are confident in your personal identity. Confidence can also be worn through one’s demeanor- a body posture or elated facial expression perhaps.
The first step and the most important tactic in wearing your confidence is through a smile, which speaks powerfully to an individual’s presence. By wearing a pop of color, you can also express your bold persona: you are vibrant and full-oflife! Surprise yourself: the power of a pair of heels or booties as opposed to your typical coupling of leggings and an oversized hoodie goes great lengths in your ability to embody confidence. When putting on a specific garment item, we cannot help but adopt the characteristics we personally associate with the piece. Being in control of how you feel through self-expression is something powerful. Clothing has the aptitude of instilling confidence and making us feel that much more beautiful.
5 WAYS TO EMULATE YOUR CONFIDENCE:
1. Your attitude in the morning can predict your journey for the remainder of the day. If you wake up feeling under the weather, dressing in an outfit you feel confident in can pose as an obstacle. Start your morning routine sharp by laying out your ‘look-of-the-day’ the night before. Look good, feel good! 2. Wear booties or short heels Your confidence will surely skyrocket when pairing an outfit with a shoe that gives you height. There’s something about being taller and stronger than the woman you were before- you can take on the world 3. Body posture is everything There is nothing less satisfying than a woman wearing a beautiful outfit while sporting a ‘slouch’. People who carry themselves more elegantly tend to be more confident in who they are. When interacting with others, try to demonstrate open body language: hold your shoulders back! Those you socialize with will take note in your ability to communicate confidently. 4. Try out some new lipsticks Lipstick provides the ability to make a woman feel beautiful. There was a study completed by the Huffington Post, which reported that waitresses who wore red lipstick received higher tips than those who wore nothing. Another study completed by Huffington reported that women wearing red lipstick in bars were approached more often than those who wore nothing. 26 percent of women claimed that they felt more confident in lipstick than not. Give it a try! 5. Define your style There’s nothing more empowering than wearing your natural beauty and accepting your individuality. Being able to find your style and your ability to ‘own it’, is integral in looking and feeling your best. Style is a distinctive appearance- it’s a way of expressing yourself through what you wear. Being able to dress in a way that emulates one’s confidence is important to women. There is nothing more powerful than a strong woman embracing her instinctual confidence- and others you’ll cross along your life path will surely take note. By following these steps, you allow yourself the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone. Try something new: it may lead to a more ‘confident you’.
MEN’S STREET STYLE
CHRISTOPHER COSCIA From the streets of New York, Milan, Paris and more, men have reimagined style as we know it. Runways have become a thing of the past; to stay current we look to the streets for fresh new ideas. We’ve commonly seen street wear on corners and crosswalks of major cities, but with trickle-up theory growing in popularity, the concept of street style has vibrated throughout the fashion community, and even within High Point’s community. As a male consumer, I have found myself unamused by the classic styles men have worn for the last several decades: we have been succumbed to a very limited assortment in style, until the emergence of street style as we know it today.
In more recent years, men have become more daring with what they wear and how they wear it. We see those who inspire us in context to fashion push boundaries everyday with their outfit choices, constantly changing, evolving, and growing upon fashion trend. Everyday fashion has been resurged: semi-tailored looks are very in at the moment. Versatility is another object in fashion investments, especially among male consumers. It has become a norm in the fashion world to expect pants like joggers and chinos to be paired with both a sporty and formal spin, truly allowing male fashion followers the opportunity to put their own creative identity in their personal self-expression. Intertwining the styles aides in creating looks that are fashionable but also comfortable. In the era of athleisure, this is an ideal trend that male consumers can buy into- guilt-free.
Garment styles like t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, and jeans, are being mixed in with more formal pieces, curating an edgier look while still providing practicality. Brands like Supreme, Off-White, and Bape are conquering the market currently, with collections that are so limited and exclusive it gives the buyer a real motive to obtain these respective pieces. And it’s all in the spirit of developing a personal fashion identity in context to street style. More recently, luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and Gucci all have worked in collaborating with up-andcoming brands, therefore releasing more innovative designs and pushing these respective styles to the market forefront. This tactic has been very beneficial in a brand’s sales performance- giving the buyer a feeling of exclusivity in the market. The street wear industry continues to grow each day- On Point will be embracing this movement as it continues to develop within the fashion realm.
FLOAT COLLECTIVE INTERVIEW Float, a word used to describe movement, meant something different to \ Andrew Dehaan: it’s a lifestyle. Float Collective is a company founded by Andrew Dehaan, a freshman Entrepreneurship Major and Fashion Merchandising Minor from Kalamazoo, MI with the support of two additional co-founders in August of 2016. Andrew grew up with a fascination for design and how it connects to cognitive thinking. After speaking with Dehaan we can learn that his journey began as an experiment. Approaching Float with a ‘learning mindset’ was the key for Dehaan and his two co-founders. Andrew expresses how the plan for Float is to, in a sense, float along until its path makes itself visible; unaware if this journey is just reason of season or a brand he will work with for a lifetime. When asking Andrew where the name Float originated from, he offers insight of his life growing up. “When times were tough, or something didn’t go the way we desired, my dad would simply say, ‘Lets float through’ or ‘We will float’. This inspired my family by keeping positive, sinking wasn’t an option and this soon became my life motto.” Since the creation of Float, there have been several item releases, recently adding their new Coach Jacket to the collection. Counting down the release of their new spring/summer line, Andrew hints that there will be more product than ever before. “I always want to keep quantities very small to make the garments as personable as I can.” Although designs tend to come naturally, one of Andrew’s greatest obstacles is the task of taking the idea and placing it into a digital form, causing him to sit on a large portion of his designs. When asked the question ‘why’, he states,
SOPHIA BROWN “I am trying to mentally figure out my approach with this new setting. Being in a college environment is difficult when creating an appeal that will affect everyone in their own separate ways.”
Andrew acknowledges, “What’s unique about float is more so the philosophy behind it and why we do things. I want to incorporate designs that are extremely happy and approachable; designs that mess with your head but serve as a conversation starter. By the same token, I want to make clothes for when you’re sad, clothes that tell a story that life is not always about ups. The fashion industry is dark as Hell. The world is dark as Hell. I want to have a brand that can appeal to both, I want Float to target the emotion of the customer.” When asking where Float gets its inspiration, we learn that Pharrell Williams and David Bowie both play a pivotal role in stylistic influences. The Signature Hoodie design features a Bowie inspired red bolt on the back with a unique character’s face. Although there seem to be drastic differences between the influencers, they both have made a substantial impact by creating a unique, yet bold style- each placing their mark upon their respective industries. “Float is transparent. It is for anyone of any age. If it speaks to you then it’s for you. Honestly there is not a label as to who my target customer is. It’s not so much that the clothes are my beliefs. It’s not supposed to be anyone’s beliefs. I want to the designs to create productive dialect so that people begin expressing feeling towards the garment, and also towards their own perspective,” says Andrew. Andrew and his co-founders strive to create a brand that speaks volumes to the principles of identity and emotion. He has showed us that with the right mindset and willingness to accept all that life throws your way, one has the ability to create something beautiful; something that can appeal to everyone; something that has the opportunity to inspire people everyday.
