LETTER FROM THE

PUBLISHE R Hale y Bossart Hi there, readers!

As the fall season approaches, our minds become a bit more sentimental, excited, and grateful. With that in mind, we have the ability to explore and uncover what is to come.

The Dixie Chicks titled this issue best, “Wide Open Spaces.” As we grow, as we flourish, there is a beautiful world to discover. As students, it is important to explore the opportunities that surround us. Our new relationship with Frye and Co. allowed our team to develop the idea of, “Wide Open Spaces.” Through the fashion forecasting of western meets elegance, Frye and Co. created a new line of shoes for the college market. Our Production Manager, Lucia Zelaya, took the meaning behind the articles and created a visual presentation that is completely attractive to the eye.

The On Point team this semester was exceptional. With over ten new members, our creativity was at an all-time high. The writers, all collaborating on the idea of free-range spaces, developed content that is applicable and relevant. Our new photographer, Samara Alsalah, utilized her unique eye and captured meaningful and purposeful images that express our words, more than well.

It has been, with an abundance of joy, to watch On Point grow the last 3 ½ years. On Point’s website has been completely renovated, through the talent of Brandt Creative Co. Check it out at www.onpointmagazine.org. The brand itself is thriving amongst the students at High Point University. Where we are now is a lifestyle and a purpose. I am beyond grateful to be sharing this issue with you! Enjoy, and continue with an open mind to what is in store for your future.

Remember that On Point is fashion, it is a lifestyle, it is travel, but ultimately, it is yours.

E D ITOR Brian na Fay Welcome to the Fall 2019 issue of On Point Magazine!

For this issue, the overall theme, ‘Wide Open Spaces,’ is based around our Frye Company photoshoot! We have partnered with The Frye Company to help promote and launch their new sister brand Frye & Co. ‘Wide Open Spaces’ represents the beauty of college students growing and discovering all that the world has to offer. As a team, On Point focuses on inspiring college students of today, to be their best self and find their own personal style or aesthetic. ‘Wide Open Spaces’ fits perfectly with what On Point is all about and it could not have been a more perfect match!

After being a part of the On Point family for over a year now, I am extremely excited to have been selected as this year’s Editor in Chief. I am incredibly honored to have been able to use my creative mind and fashion focused ideas to bring our fall issue to life. As a fashion merchandising student, On Point has become an outlet for me to express my love and interest in fashion and lifestyle. I have loved every moment of coming together with other team members to create this beautiful issue full of inspiration, encouragement, and style.

FRINGE WITH BENEFITS BY: LEA BONNER

Fringe was so popular this summer, becoming a bohemian aesthetic filling our Instagram feeds. We saw it on summery dresses, kimonos, and tops on girls at Coachella, giving us major western vibes against a desert landscape. New York Fashion Week of Spring 2019 showed us funky and festive pieces by Tom Ford and Oscar De La Renta, inspiring other lines to mimic these later in the summer. Fringe two pieces have been super in lately from fashion websites like LuLus and Princess Polly, coming in eye-catching sequins and bold whites. This trend has been around for decades, and continues to live on. The iconic flapper fringe dress was a popular style in the 1920s, creating a striking look for flappers. The Charleston Dress, named after the dance, was a major staple

for flappers, perfect for dancing and parties.

Yves Saint Laurent brought back the trend in the 1960s, creating the two piece sets in dresses and suede. Fashion icon Cher rocked fringe in her evening and casual looks, setting a trend for decades after. Luckily, this classic look isn’t over yet. Revolve, ASOS, and LuLus are releasing their fall lines, topped with fringe jackets in cream, suede, and denim. These are the perfect pieces for cooler fall days and to transform any outfit.

A suede fringed jacket paired with your favorite jeans and booties, or dressed up with a cute midi skirt and platform heels, are the looks to be styling this upcoming fall. Pieces like these are the perfect transition as we move into fall, creating a sassy, vintage look anyone can rock.

GO GREEN WITH BLUE JEANS BY: LEA BONNER

veryone has that one pair of jeans, you know exactly which ones I am talking about. They hug you perfectly, go amazing with your favorite tops, and make you feel so confident-just like clothes should. You wear them all the time, and they are one of your staple pieces in your wardrobe. To me, jeans are my go-to bottoms. They can be dressed up or down in any season, and the endless washes, fits, and styles makes it so much easier to find the pair for you. While we all have our favorite jeans, we also are always looking for a wardrobe addition - our wallets, however, are not. Remaking and recycling clothes, especially jeans, is the perfect way to update your closet and add a new piece for a cheaper price. Sustainable fashion is on the rise, creating a positive impact in both social and environmental aspects of fashion. By remaking your jeans, you are creating an updated piece to wear for the upcoming season and benefiting the environment.

Fringing the bottom of jeans, adding pearls or painting the pockets, and distressing jeans are becoming super popular. Inspired by Pinterest posts and mood boards, we gathered the trendiest ways to revamp your favorite jeans for this fall!

Fringe Bottoms Fringe has been popular for decades, dating back to the 1920s. Good news, it’s coming back this fall, especially on jackets, shirts, and denim!

Adding fringe provides a boho touch to any outfit, and fringe on jeans is easier than expected and provides a simple but bold statement. ‒Mark the desired length of your fray with chalk. ‒Cut along the chalked line. ‒Tease loose threads with your finger. ‒Brush sandpaper along the edge for a distressed look. ‒Scrunch and rub the leg of the pants to finish the distressing.

Pearled Jeans Pearls add a femine, sweet touch to any pair of jeans. You can add a

touch by the waistband, down the side, or across the whole pair. They’re perfectly paired with a sweater on the cooler fall days, and perfect for the holidays. ‒Lay the jeans flat. ‒Mark desired places of the pearls (across the whole pair, along the hem or pocket) with a fabric marker. ‒Thread the needle and the pearl. ‒Pull the needle through the denim and repeat three times around to secure the pearl. ‒Tie string into a double knot and trim. ‒Continue across desired places. ‒To wash, turn jeans inside out on a gentle cycle, hanging to dry.

Painted Jeans Painting the pockets, the backs, or the sides of any pair of jeans adds the perfect aesthetic to any outfit. Waves on the pocket, stars on the back, or sunflowers up the side are the cutest addition to an outfit, making it unique and a stand-out. ‒Lay jeans flat. ‒Lightly sketch your design with a pencil or chalk, and mark off design areas with masking tape. ‒Mix your acrylic paints with a textile medium to ensure the clothing is washable. ‒Paint! ‒Peel off excess paint and let dry.

These are only a few additions to your favorite pair of jeans. They make your favorite pair unique to you and your closet, and provide an exciting new (and cheaper) addition as we transition to everyone’s favorite season-fall!

Everyone has a favorite outfit, whether it was a gift, an item you saved up for, or even a piece that just makes you feel good. Maybe it’s a favorite shirt or pair of shoes, or even a whole outfit put together. Although they love the look and comfort that they have in these items, what they really love, is how it makes them feel. Clothes make us feel a certain way. Clothing has the ability to turn your whole mood and motivation around. When you wear something that makes you feel good, you are more confident. And when it comes to life, confidence is key.

Confidence changes how we carry ourselves and how others see us. The confidence that comes from what we wear is based on pride in how we look. Whether you have a suit or dress on, or just jeans and a T-shirt, if that makes you feel good, wear it! Fashion is an outlet for us to represent ourselves and flaunt our personalities. People tend to associate others’ names and faces with their vibe, I know I do. We aren’t judging the other person, we’re reading into them and further understanding who they are. Vibes are partially portrayed by how a person presents themselves.

The time and effort we put into our appearance is valued and affects how people remember you.

This is something that is shown by many successful people throughout the world. The late Steve Jobs wore the same outfit every day. The purpose behind this is that using the time and effort to pick out an outfit can be used on more meaningful, productive things. This also ensures that he would always be comfortable in what he was wearing. The same trends have been enacted in the lives of Mark Zuckerberg and Albert Einstein. These people have taken that favorite outfit and incorporated it into their lives on a daily basis. They did this in order to always feel that confidence and comfortability they need in order to succeed. The power of a favorite outfit is immeasurable. It makes sense that when you wear that favorite shirt when you have a test, or when you have a long day ahead of you, that small detail of wearing your favorite shirt gets you through the day. The confidence and mood you’ll have throughout the day will improve compared to when you wear something not as empowering. Although these days may not be your favorite, you’ll look good and feel good while you’re experiencing it all.

How people present themselves ties into how we perceive the other person. If a person is feeling under the weather or not ready for the day, they may wear some more comfortable clothes. They might have stopped putting the effort into themselves that they usually do. They probably won’t be wearing any makeup or have their hair styled, they might wear glasses instead of contacts. This shows the people on the outside that they aren’t feeling like their best selves, and that’s okay! It’s okay to be a little more comfortable sometimes. On the contrary, if a person presents themselves in a manner chosen with purpose and confidence, they look like a brand-new person. They look like a person who is motivated, goal-oriented and has their priorities in check. The “Look Good, Feel Good” mentality is scientifically proven to give you more confidence and energy.

When you first think about indie music what do you think? Do you think of a group of people or a singular person? A raspy or soft-spoken voice? Do they look as though they are a “free spirited person?” Ask anyone. The answer to this is different from person to person as indie music is limitless.

Indie music: A music genre without concrete criteria regarding it’s sound or lyrical content. Instead, it is a genre that has been created when artists independently create their own music. Without the constraints of working with many outlets to create music content, indie artists are able to fully express themselves both lyrically and musically. Popular indie artists include Florence + the Machine, Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys, and Tegan and Sara.

Individuality, creativity, and self-expression is emphasized in this genre of music. The music streaming powerhouse, Spotify, has a curated playlist titled “Ultimate Indie.”

“PERSONAL LIES” BY DJO The first song is written by Djo and titled, “Personal Lies.” This song showcases the individuality of the artist with the use of sound effects and a variety of instruments. The song is filled with sounds ranging from an electric piano, an electric guitar, all the way to drums which creates a nostalgic feeling about 90’s rock music. With an effortlessly raspy voice, Djo reflects on the feelings of self-doubt, devastation, and other occurring thoughts when being involved in a relationship. “Personal Lies” addresses negative coping skills that many people turn to when struggling, including binge drinking.

Overall, the song is about feeling lost and hopeless while also questioning the mystery of another. In the end, the decision that they are not worried about the unknown is made.

Another song listed on the Spotify playlist is, “Your Light” by The Big Moon. Beginning with a soft tune, the song soon switches to an alternative sound. Although the tune switches to a more alternative one, the artist continues to sing with a softer voice which was used in the beginning. The use of the electronic piano playing in the background of the song creates a happy and positive vibe. This is a song full of metaphors as the lyrics speak about how someone is able to “forget about the darkness and remembers [someone’s] light.” Similar to the previous song, “Your Light” is about giving up and giving into something negative and that negative thing starting to drag someone down. But then, the person remembers the positive and the good that keeps them from falling, whether it is a person or a thing that they are remembering. Accurate to reality, this song is displaying the true feelings that some may face about wanting to accept defeat, but then getting back up and remembering what is keeping them from doing so.

“THE GREATEST” BY LANA DEL RAY As a popular figure in current pop culture, Lana Del Rey, who often is described as having an angelic voice, has a massive following. In her song, “The greatest,” Lana Del Rey’s simplistic yet rich voice draws in her large and immense group of admirers. This specific song revolves around the concept of missing something or someone from the past - an idea that many listeners are able to relate to. Going down her long and personal road of memories, Del Rey brings the listener through a variety of places that she has been with someone and all of the activities that they did. From Long Beach to New York, she reminisces and misses the person that she made so many memories with. Missing the past, she feels as though she is going through “the greatest loss of them all.” Free-spirited and reflective, she is going through the motions that most people go through when grieving the loss of an end of a relationship. Allowing the listener to relate, she is feels defeated by the loss that she is going through. Overall, what sets this song apart from any other song is that Del Rey’s raw and vulnerable emotions create intense, yet emotional feelings while listening to the song, drawing in a love for the song.

“YOU AIN’T THE PROBLEM” BY MICHAEL KIWANUKA Number four on the list of songs found from “Ultimate Indie” is the song, “You Ain’t The Problem,” by Michael Kiwanuka. According to Kiwanuka, the song off his upcoming self-titled album, “explores what it means to be a human today.” If you are looking for a song to jam around to, this is the song for you.

Throughout the song, there are a multitude of engaging elements, from the instruments used to the lyrics. The song includes an ongoing beat created with the drums and electric sounds. Along with these two elements, towards the beginning of the song, there is a sound of people chattering added, making the song more stimulative. With all of the musical elements, the lyrics speak about self-acceptance as the artist repeats the lines, “You ain’t the problem,” and, “Time heals the pain.” Understanding the obstacles that people go through, Kiwanuka emphasizes that people are only human. “You Ain’t The Problem,” is the perfect feel good song for anyone that is having one of those “off” days where they need something to lift their spirits and to just say that everything would be okay.

“SOFIA” BY CLAIRO Last but not least is Clairo’s song, “Sofia.” This song tells a story about two people wanting to be together, but are unable to do so. The song speaks from a first-person perspective and directs the entire song to another person named Sofia. Rather than a song with a relatable overall message, the songwriter creates a relatable storyline that the audience is able to relate to. Unique to the artist, the artist has a light and soft-spoken voice, making the song have a relaxed tone. This song describes the trials and tribulations that occur while going through a relationship. “Sofia” is about someone wanting to be in a relationship with another person, while also trying to convince that person to be with them. Inferred from listening to the song, there is a strain on the relationship because one person in the relationship feels as though being with them is a “crime,” thus making them hesitant from committing to a relationship.

Turning HOT GIRL SUMMER into BAD GIRL FALL: HOW TO KEEP THE POSITIVE ENERGY OF SUMMER

Thanks to Megan Thee Stallion and Twitter, an aura of female positivity was spread all summer long. The term for this aura was ‘Hot Girl Summer’. Many female artists, like Stallion and the duo City Girls, projected this energy towards their audience. The idea bases on females letting go and doing what they feel.

Other supporting ideas were for women to focus on themselves, being successful, happy, and making money. It became almost a version of a meme, but its empowering and catchy message was still being accepted and shared.

As we transition into fall there have been unfortunate spinoffs of ‘Hot Girl Summer’. Names like ‘Depressed Girl Fall’, or ‘Social Anxiety Autumn’ have been thrown around.

This is all in jest, but in the female community, there needs to be more conversation of how to empower each other and ourselves at a constant rate. On Point proposes Bad Gal Fall (bad in terms of trendy, attractive, etc). This name is more fitting for the fall season, but still holds its encouraging meaning. Pop

culture unknowingly will help keep this positive female vibe through its many categories of movies, shows, music, and the social medias of many celebrities.

There are some newer music releases that have fall vibes, but also keep in touch with Bad Gal Fall. Any song

by Bazzi, a male artist, is an ode to women and how amazing they are.

His most recent album dropped in August featuring songs like “IFLY”, “Soul Searching”, and “Beautiful”.

This album is soft, sweet, but empowering. Miley Cyrus has been releasing new music as well. She has come out with hits like “Mothers Daughter” and was featured in the song “Don’t Call Me Angel” with Lana Del Rey and Ariana Grande.

Cyrus’ music has a slightly dark undertone that goes along with fall, but because of her female centered lyrics it ties to Bad Gal Fall. Other newer songs to listen to are “Holy Terrain”

by FKA Twigs, “Secrets” by Becky G, and “Genetics” by Meghan Trainor. There are older songs as well to tune into this vibe like, “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor

Swift, “Good as Hell” by Lizzo, and almost any song written by Lana Del Rey. Bad Gal Fall is also represented in movies and television. There are some new shows like Monarca that is centered around a powerful female that is in charge of a tequila empire.

There are also shows that aren’t new but are still very relevant like, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Orange is the New Black, Madam Secretary, and season five of American Horror Story where Lady Gaga steals the show. Now for movies, there are many, but some of my favorites are Penelope, Panic Room, and the Harry Potter series. Penelope is a movie based on a girl with a physical deformity and how she learns to love herself, this is my favorite on the list.

Panic Room features a mother protecting her child from violent house intruders. Lastly, the Harry Potter series gives off so many fall vibes, but also has powerful witches like Hermione that practically carried Harry all the way through the series. All but Harry Potter is luckily available on Netflix.

There are many celebrities yearround who support women and how amazing we are, but there are some

who in particular radiate fall carefree feelings. Lady Gaga is quite the woman, who isn’t scared of breaking boundaries from her costumes, to switching in and out of singing and acting, and by being honest about self-love and her struggles with it.

Just recently Gaga launched her new makeup brand ‘Haus Laboratories’ with its slogan, “We believe beauty is how you see yourself.” Another celebrity, after her unfortunate overdose, Demi Lovato is back and better than ever. Flaunting her untouched body on her Instagram in a series of photos Lovato captioned, ‘This is my biggest fear. A photo of me in a bikini unedited.” In Rihanna’s Savage Fenty’s latest show at New York Fashion Week, there were women featured of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities. Rihanna includes diverse and powerful women on a daily basis on the Savage Fenty’s Instagram, like Stephanie Seban, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age eight. Although Billy Porter is a man, he is a very proud gay man who does and wears anything he wants.

It does not matter the gender, us females can definitely learn a thing a thing or two from him, just look at any of his red carpet looks. By keep-

However, packing for such an occasion can be strenuous and difficult. Here are some travel necessities for your wanderlust adventure:

Comfortable shoes- These are a must! Whether it’s standing or walking, you will be on your feet for an extensive amount of time. Why torture yourself with heels or shoes that will rub. Stylish sandals or some trendy sneakers will do!

Phone & Charger- Whether it is to contact your friends or to snap a cute photo, your phone is an absolute essential. Plus, bring a charger for powerless worries.

Water & Snacks- While many festivals force you to purchase from them, hydration and nourishment are quintessential. If possible, pack a water bottle and some snacks to keep you energized.

Correct attire- Depending on the weather (it is important to check before), clothing should fit the environment. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses for summer, or a coat and gloves for winter.

Bag- While the rules for bag are shifting these days, it is critical to pack light and with only necessary items. Fanny packs or a mini backpack are amazing bags for traveling easy.

Hand sanitizer or Wet wipes- Festivals can get messy, so you should bring a way to quickly clean yourself up.

First-aid Kit- Accidents happen, so pack for those occasions. Band-aid’s and Neosporin will fix just about anything when it comes blisters or scrapes.

Money- Money is important for buying food and merchandise. Bring a secure way of transporting your money. It is also important to always have a little extra cash in the case of an emergency!

Meditation FINDING YOUR MANTRA & MANIFESTING YOUR GOALS THROUGH MEDITATION As humans, we get wrapped up in living a lifestyle revolved around the type of clothes we put on our bodies and the kinds of foods we eat. Although these are excitable hobbies we endure as we scroll through our instagram feed, a lot of us forget the importance of mindfulness and understanding the proper ways to fuel our minds to become the best versions of ourselves. The practice of meditation is primarily what you make of it. Meditation could mean allowing five minutes of your day to close your eyes and focus on your breathing and can stretch as far as an hour long guided meditation session. Learning to incorporate a meditation routine in your daily agenda is essential for harvesting good habits, a positive mindset, and a healthy way of life. “​Your Mind Will Always believe everything you tell it. Feed it with faith. Feed it with truth. Feed it with love.”

GET YOURSELF IN THE MOOD Setting the tone for meditation is one of the most crucial steps of the process. In order to get the full experience, we must allow ourselves to be set in the right mental mindset and physical environment to prepare ourselves for meditation. Placing yourself in an environment of very little noise and distractions will ensure that your mind will have the capability to think freely and distress from any worries and anxieties. Candles and essential oils are a form of aromatherapy, one of the safest and most effective forms of alternative medicine. Certain scents and oils have their own special power that can calm our minds. Lavender is one of the most popular scents used for meditation as it is useful for treating anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

Our posture and how we position our bodies also affect our breathing and our ability to fully relax. Sitting in an upright position and elongating your spine, inducing deeper and steadier breathing techniques. Laying down with both arms resting by your sides decreases tension in your muscles. Relaxing your shoulders and sitting up straight helps induce the muscle memory to carry ourselves the same way when we are sitting at the dinner table or working at a desk in front of a computer for hours. The ideal end goal of meditation is to adopt these behaviors and practices into our everyday lives.

CREATING THE MANTRA When we are in a state of meditation, it is easy for us to lose focus on what exactly we’re meditating for. The majority of the time our brain creates a roadblock in which it separates rational thinking from the stressors in our lives. Our brains tend to go into overdrive when too much information is trying to be processed. When we are stressed about school, jobs, and relationships, the most common response among individuals is to panic and act upon our initial thoughts. Setting daily goals and mantras through meditation creates a curveball effect on how we can manage these common stressors in a healthy way. Creating these mantras each day is essential as it teaches us to think before acting, to show love over anger, and to have more faith than fear. When we meditate it is important to ask ourselves questions on what our ideal day or week would look like. Writing these questions in a personal journal and following up about each day is most beneficial during the manifestation process. Certain mantras could include choosing to be optimistic rather than pessimistic, to be in touch with your surroundings and be present, and to allow yourself to slow down when you’re tired and to go the extra mile when you’ve been inspired.

Your mantra is personal to you and only you. We must learn to love and have faith in ourselves before we can have faith in others and allow ourselves to transpire into the humans we aspire to be in life. Your mind will always believe everything you tell it. Feed it with faith. Feed it with truth. Feed it with love.

“Our emotions and our decisions are a mirrored reflection of our thoughts” POST MEDITATION- REFLECTION, IMPLEMENTATION, & SUSTAINABILITY When we meditate, we are given control as to how it affects us short-term and long term in our lives. With meditation we need sustainability. Meaning that ultimately we must learn how to take our thoughts through meditation and put them into action in the real world. Doing so ensures that the goals and mantras we create, become embedded into our life long-term. When our lives seem to be headed in a downward spiral, it is important that in that moment, we reflect on our meditation and therefore flip the invisible light switch in our brains. In the face of adversity, we must grasp the habit of implementing our thoughts through meditation and allowing us to ask ourselves the question,...is this going to lead me in the direction I intend for myself ? At the end of the day, our emotions and our decisions are a mirrored reflection of our thoughts. An optimistic mind leads to an optimistic life.

Reflection, implementation, and sustainability in the post-meditation stage leads us in acquiring our life-long goals.

HOW VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN DIETS CAN NEGATIVELY IMPACT YOUR HEALTH

One of the most popular trends in the past few years has been the adaption of a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Some people join the fad for environmental reasons, or in an effort to ease their own personal dietary intolerances. But generally speaking, many individuals become vegetarian or vegan for the renowned health benefits like low blood pressure, decreased risk of diabetes, and low cholesterol1. However, awareness of the potential health risks associated with these diets is not advocated enough. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are easily attained if vegetarians and vegans are not careful. Even more concerning, though, is a recent study that was completed in the United Kingdom and broadcasted by healthline.com.

This study has capsized one of the largest benefits hordes of people have been expecting to receive from their diets: vegetarianism and veganism has actually been correlated with increased stroke risk2.

Vegans and Vegetarians, here are six important nutrients you could be missing: Vitamin D Vegetarian diets, but especially vegan diets, pose a risk for developing a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is needed by the body for the health and maintenance of our cells. When cell processes are dysfunctional or out of control, our chances of developing cancer multiply. Vitamin D deficiency also increases your risk for arthritis and heart disease1. According to health.gov, Vitamin D is found in foods such as fish, milk, yogurt and eggs.

Some vegetarian and vegan foods that can be found with high vitamin D content include orange juice, mushrooms, and cereals3. So many cereals are fortified with vitamins and minerals, making it super easy to get some nutrients that you could be missing. If you’re looking for a healthier option, Kashi cereals are fortified and filled with whole grains, fiber, and protein!

Vitamin B12 According to the National Institute of Health, vitamin B12 plays a role in maintaining the health of our blood and nerve cells, in addition to supporting the production of our DNA-- the blueprint for our bodies. If we do not get enough B12, we may experience side effects such as fatigue and weight loss. Vitamin B12 deficiency can even lead to the development of a disease called megaloblastic anemia4. Vegetarians may get enough B12 because it is present in foods such as milk and eggs, but vegans often do not get a sufficient amount of B12 through their diets. Eating foods fortified with B12 may be helpful, but supplements proba-

bly need to be taken in order to ensure that you’re getting enough1!

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Polyunsaturated fatty acids like omega 3’s are used by every single cell within us, but are especially used in our eyes and brain. In fact, it is possible that getting enough omega-3’s could prevent the development of diseases like Age Related Macular Degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods like fish, soybeans, nuts, eggs, and yogurt, making it possible that vegetarian and vegan diets may be lacking in their omega-3 levels5. While omega-3 deficiencies are actually extremely uncommon in the United States, it is still important to get enough through your diet to make sure you are reaping the potential benefits5! Some potential vegan options to obtain omega-3’s include nuts, seeds, and microalgae1. Homemade trail mix can be a great source of omega 3’s and is an easy snack to make and take to go. Try mixing together some pecans, pumpkin seeds, almonds, sunflower seeds, and craisins or raisins!

Calcium Calcium is easily one of the most important minerals required by our bodies. It plays a role in almost every body system-- it lets us move our muscles, assures strong bones and teeth, helps send messages to and from our brains, and aids in the issuing of the necessary hormones and enzymes needed to carry out life functions6. Those pursuing vegan diets in particular need to be extremely conscious of their calcium intake since they do not consume dairy. Some vegan options to bulk up on calcium include foods enriched with calcium such as cereals and juices. Greens also have high calcium abundance so keep your refrigerator stocked with kale, broccoli, and spinach! Iron Iron deficiency anemia is prevalent among individuals following vegan and vegetarian diets since they are not consuming meat, poultry, and possibly seafood 1,7. Our bodies need iron to help create important molecules within our circulatory systems called hemoglobin and myoglobin. These molecules allow our red blood cells to transport oxygen within our bodies, to every single structure7. According to the NIH, beans, nuts, raisins, and other fortified foods can be great sources of iron. Consuming foods rich in Vitamin C can help to increase iron absorption, so make sure you are getting an adequate amount of Vitamin C as well1! Supplements may be helpful, but be careful to read the labels and to only take recommended amounts-- too much iron can be toxic7! Try out this yummy recipe for a white bean soup from www.healthiersteps.com for a boost of iron!

Ingredients ● 4 cups white beans, cooked or 8 oz dried

(use Navy, Lima, Cannellini, Great Northern) ● 2 cups vegetable broth, or water ● 1 medium onion, chopped ● 2 cloves garlic, chopped ● 1 medium potato, diced ● 1 medium carrot, diced ● 1 teaspoon dried marjoram ● 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika ● 2 tablespoons coconut milk ● 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes, or 2 teaspoon

fresh leaves chopped ● 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, or 1 sprig of fresh ● Pinch ground allspice ● 1 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste ● Pinch Cayenne pepper ● 1 bay leaf ● 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast flakes Directions 1. If you are using dried beans, prepare 8 oz of dried beans by sorting and washing. Soak in water to cover for 8 hours or overnight. The following day, drain and rinse beans and cook in water until tender.

2. Place beans, water, onion, garlic, potato, carrot, marjoram, paprika, coconut milk, parsley, thyme, allspice, salt, cayenne pepper, bay leaf in a large pot. Bring to a boil, and reduce to simmer for 30 minutes or until desired thickness is reached. Add yeast flakes, check seasoning and serve immediately.

Zinc Zinc plays a very wide variety of roles within our bodies. Like Vitamin B12, zinc is needed to build our DNA. It also plays a crucial part in helping our bodies fight off foreign invaders that will make us sick. It even helps keep our senses of smell and taste intact! Zinc levels are high in foods such as

oysters, other seafood, poultry, red meat, beans, nuts, and fortified foods8. Zinc consumption is often inadequate in vegetarians and vegans. In order to increase zinc absorption, vegetarians and vegans may soak or sprout beans and seeds, or leaven bread. Consuming citric acid can also help to increase the absorption of zinc that you are receiving from other foods1. My Advice: Be mindful of the foods you are consuming and what nutrients they may possess or lack. Supplements can be a great way to boost your internal levels of important vitamins and minerals, but always remember to check with your doctor to see what they may recommend for you. Look for creative, fun, and new ways to cook and prepare foods to optimize nutrient absorption, and don’t be afraid to try new foods!

What does increased stroke risk mean for vegetarians and vegans?

A study completed by nutritionists in the U.K. served to explore any existing correlations between vegetarian/vegan diets and the occurrence of strokes and ischemic heart disease. The study involved over 48,000 participants that were separated into groups including vegetarians, vegans, meat eaters and fish eaters. All participants answered baseline and follow-up questionnaires about their diets, medical histories, socioeconomic characteristics, physical activity, smoking, and more. The follow up questionnaires were given for over 18 years. The results revealed that vegetarian/vegan and fish diets were associated with lower percentages of ischemic heart disease than were meat eaters. However, a fascinating find was that stroke rates were 20% higher in the vegan/ vegetarian groups than meat eaters. Specifically, hemorrhagic strokes were the most common type of stroke seen2. This is a startling discovery since vegan and vegetarian diets have previously been thought to decrease stroke risk1. Since this study only looked for correlation, more research must be done to understand the underlying factors contributing to higher rates of hemorrhagic stroke in vegans/vegetarians2. Specifically, the study suggests that research on the levels of fatty acids, B12, amino acids, and cholesterol within meat eaters and vegans/vegetarians should be examined, indicating the importance of receiving the proper levels of vitamins and nutrients! Vegans and vegetarians should be on the lookout for follow up research to see if the cause of higher hemorrhagic stroke rates can be determined.

My ideal dinner would consist of pasta and chocolate… lots of chocolate. And while it is imperative to treat myself to that every now and then, I also love eating foods with nutritional benefits. I took some of my favorite dishes and swapped in foods that are high in nutrients so that I can eat what I want and feel good about it, too. I hope you enjoy the same!

G O L D E N C AU L I F L OW E R R I C E Substituting cauliflower into popular dishes is one of my favorite food trends at the moment. Not only is the vegetable super healthy (it is packed with vitamin C and fiber!), it is super versatile. In this recipe, I use ground turmeric powder to give the cauliflower a beautiful, golden color. Turmeric is both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, which means the spice does wonders for your immune system. The raisins add some sweetness to the rice while the walnuts give it an extra crunch. This dish will make five servings, so consider making it for your next dinner with friends or for your weekly meal prep! · · · · · · · · · ·

1 large head of cauliflower* 1 tablespoon avocado oil ½ an onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger 1 tablespoon ground turmeric powder 1 cup full fat coconut milk 3 tablespoon unsweetened shredded coconut flakes Salt and pepper, to taste Optional toppings: ¼ cup walnuts, ¼ cup raisins, 1 tablespoon parsley chopped

*I prefer buying a head of cauliflower and grating it myself into rice, because that feels freshest to me! If you want to quicken the process, you can buy pre-made cauliflower rice.

Prepare the cauliflower head by grating it into fine, rice-like pieces. Avoid grating the stalk as that part lacks flavor.

Preheat a large pan over medium heat for two minutes.

Add avocado oil and chopped onion along with salt and pepper. Occasionally stir for about five to six minutes.

Add garlic and ginger and occasionally stir for about two more minutes. (Be careful! Garlic burns easily.)

Add turmeric powder and mix well for one minute.

Add coconut milk and bring it to a simmer. Let sit for five minutes.

Add cauliflower rice and salt and pepper to taste. Cover with a lid and let sit for five minutes, or until the rice is cooked to your liking.

8. Turn off the heat and add coconut flakes, walnuts, and raisons and stir.

9. To garnish, add parsley.

To put this recipe to the test and see if it can compare to box brownies, I served the dessert to my parents, who are not at all fans of avocados. I did not tell them what was in the brownies until after they took a bite. They were shocked at how rich and chocolatey the brownies tasted – not at all like avocados! I challenge you to serve these to your friends and see if they can guess what the mystery ingredient is… I promise you they won’t be able to! · · · · · · · · · · · ·

150 g avocado (~ one large avocado) 2 large eggs 3 ½ tablespoon unsweetened applesauce 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup + 2 tablespoon brown sugar ½ cup + 2 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup almond flour 1 teaspoon espresso power (optional, but definitely enhances the chocolate flavor!)

1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt Chocolate chips, as toppings

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease an 8 x 8 pan and line with parchment paper.

Add avocado, eggs, applesauce, brown sugar, and vanilla to your food processor. Blend until no chunks remain.

In a separate bowl, combine cocoa powder, almond flour, espresso powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Pour dry ingredients into avocado batter. Fully blend.

Spread batter into the pan and sprinkle chocolate chips on top.

Bake for 17 – 20 minutes.

ZUCCHINI NOODLE CAPRESE Zucchini noodles, or zoodles, have taken over the noodle world for their wonderful texture and similar taste to real noodles.

Zucchini is low in calories and high in fiber, which means zoodles are great for those who are counting calories. This dish only takes about five minutes to make – all you have to do is combine the ingredients and serve! It is great to bring to a dinner with friends, because who doesn’t love caprese?! · · · · ·

Four medium zucchinis 8 oz cherry tomatoes 8 oz small ball of mozzarella ¼ cup pesto Optional toppings: Toasted pine nuts and fresh basil

Toast the pine nuts in a skillet on medium low heat for five minutes. Toss gently so that they do not burn. Set side.

If you have a spiralizer, create zoodles. If not, you can buy pre-made zoodles at the store. Place the zoodles in a large bowl.

Cut the tomatoes and mozzarella in halves and place in the bowl.

Mix in the pesto until well combined.

Garnish with pine nuts and basil.

Enjoy!

Hiking has a bad reputation. Bugs. Sweat. Uneven paths. Picture Meredith from “The Parent Trap”.

But why does hiking have such a negative connotation amongst some?

The answer: They’re doing hiking wrong.

Hiking can be a great way to connect with yourself and nature while finding happiness in the little things. In other words, hiking brings you back to center and can be a lot of fun!

Here are some tips and tricks to make sure you do hiking right... because who wants to be Meredith after all?

Tip #1: Explore New Paths.

Take the time to research where some great trails are near you. You would be surprised at how many beautiful spots there are near your home turf.

Whether it be waterfalls, stellar views, or lush greenways; you’re bound to find a picturesque place to spend your time in. Simply search, “Trails Near Me” and you will be supplied with pathways of all different elevations and tracks. Pick either the prettiest, most challenging or closest path near you... whatever speaks to you that day! Hiking doesn’t have to be an uphill battle (literally). Since trails come in a vast variety, you can choose the path in which you’re most comfortable with.

Tip #2: Bring Friends.

Hiking is arguably one of the best ways to make memories. With the amount of ‘no screen’ time that hiking provides, you are able to connect with your friends again and have pure conversation without the distraction of the social world around you. Not to mention, the number of unexpected things that can happen on a hike are endless. Any-

thing can happen with mother nature, so laughs are bound to occur.

Tip #3: Make A Day Out Of It! Since hiking is a great form of exercise, hunger will set in. Instead of rushing back to your car to leave and grab a bite to eat on the way home, pack a lunch and while on your hike, take a break. While eating, you can enjoy your surroundings and notice things in nature that your fast-paced life would normally not allow.

If there’s one thing nature teaches us, it’s that rushing makes you miss things. Treasure the time to relax and take in the scenery.

Tip #4: Wear An Outfit That Makes You Feel Good.

Workout clothes are empowering (and totally in right now). Your body is capable of amazing things.

Put your favorite workout wear on, feel strong, and tackle that hike. Not only will the fresh air makes you feel like you are capable, but your outfit will give you that extra boost of confidence!

Tip #5: Enjoy The View.

In this day and age, technology rules our lives.

Social media has the power to dictate our moods.

There is a great amount of stress from work, school, relationships... life! When you are hiking, find yourself again. Think about your priorities in life, what you want for yourself, what you need to improve on, what motivates you, what makes you, you. Zero distractions means one hundred percent self acknowledgment. ‘Healthy snacks’ these days are a trending topic. What many don’t realize is that many of those snacks labeled as ‘healthy’ are packaged, overly processed, and artificial goods. One of the best ways to combat the often misleading healthy snack is to make your own. This recipe is dorm room approved. Easy, simple, portable and timely to make, it won’t disappoint!

Peanut Butter and Oats Granola Bar Ingredients: ¾ Cup Natural Peanut Butter or other Natural Nut Butter 3 Tablespoons of Hone y 1 Tablespoon of Pure Maple Syr up 2 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract ¼ Tablespoon Sea Salt (Plus a dash to sprinkle on top once bars are in pan) 2 Cups of Old Fashioned Oats ½ Chopped Nuts of your choice *Optional but recommended! ½ Cup Mini Dark Chocolate Chips

Directions: 1. Heat Coconut Oil, Peanut Butter, Honey, and Maple Syrup until easily stir-able and well blended.

2. Add in vanilla and salt until combined. Slowly add in oats, nuts until completely mixed.

3. Add in optional chocolate chips.

4. Line a pan with a piece of parchment paper. Firmly press in the mixture until evenly coated throughout the pan.

5. Sprinkle extra sea salt and chocolate chips on top.

6. Store in the fridge until bars are chilled. Remove from fridge and cut into sections.

7. Store bars in an airtight container for up to 5 days, or up to 2-3 months in the freezer.

FINDING YOUR PURE BARRE VOICE: A CONVERSATION WITH HALEY STONE B Y: S A R A H W E S T I N

Breathing heavily, with sweat dripping from your brow, tracing the jawline of your face, you loosen your grip on the barre. You turn to look at yourself and your class through the large mirrors lining the walls, only to see shiny foreheads and hands on knees. As you sink down to the floor in rewarding exhaustion, the lights go off. After a series of intense small incremental movements for the past hour, a stretch is just what you need.

“Breath deep in… hold it… and exhale out…” a soothing voice quietly says. As you stretch out your legs and bend over, your muscles ease and your mind is calm. Although the hour was rough, and the workout tedious and challenging, you feel moved, inspired, and empowered. That is why Haley Stone embarked on her Pure Barre journey.

Haley Stone, at only 18, is rather accomplished for her age. A dancer at heart, and someone who wears her passions on her sleeves for all to see, just started her freshman year at High Point University. She has been teaching classes at Pure Barre for the past few years, and simply cannot get enough of it. After teaching in her hometown of Frederick, Maryland, she has transferred Pure Barre studios to continue her passion here in High Point, and involve the students of HPU in her classes. Haley has always worked to incorporate a healthy, well rounded and balanced routine into her lifestyle. From eating healthy to teaching 3-5 classes a week, to balancing her first semester of college, to making the HPU Dance Team, she’s really got it all!

Haley started off as a dancer from a young age.

Since she was two years old, she has dipped her toes into various forms of dance, ranging all the

way from tap and ballet to hip hop. For the past 7 years, Haley has gotten into dance competitions and learned tons along the way. In our conversations, she talked of her dream of becoming a NYC Rockette, and fulfilling her role as a professional dancer. As we discussed her dreams, her face became rosy and bright, with a smile extending across her face. Feeling Haley’s passion is something so vivid and real, and unreplicable. Her charisma and determination rubs off onto anyone she encounters, it truly is contagious.

Haley isn’t all talk either, she actually works for her goals. “For the past four summers, I have been attending the Rockettes Summer Intensive, where I spent a week in New York City and train with the Rockettes from 9am-6pm,” says Haley.

Through this training, she has gotten opportunities, connections, and friends.

Pure Barre means so much more than just a work out class to Haley. Haley referred to Pure Barre as a true safe place, which is much needed in a modern society that is lacking just that.

Pure Barre is an inclusive environment, and its mission is to empower. To empower your clients means to empower others as well. PB works with people of all backgrounds, genders and body types. Creating an inviting environment inspires and motivates those who attend pure barre classes to be the best versions of themselves. Pure Barre looks past physical accomplishment, and treats mental accomplishment as a strong and valid equal. Attending classes in an atmosphere such as the one PB has created results that show in flying colors.

About the Workout Pure Barre is a lifestyle, a commitment and a real experience to its instructors and it’s PB family.

Pure Barre, as Haley puts it, is essentially fitness incorporating a ballet barre, based on dance technique and workouts. Pure Barre offers different types of classes, from the traditional Classic workout to pilates based Reform and cardio based Empower class. The secret behind Pure Barre’s intensity is it’s method: Pure Barre workouts focus on one part of your body at a time using small isometric movements. These small isometric movements, such as simple leg pulses, if done for long enough and correctly, will cause your muscles to shake, for you to sweat, and to ultimately build that muscle.

Courtney Taylor, a sophomore at High Point University, can be considered a regular at Pure Barre. “Pure Barre stands out to me because it is an extremely unique way to work out. It really is a full body workout even if you’re not feeling it in the moment you will definitely feel it the next morning.” After getting over your muscle hangover, you definitely feel it, but it reminds you how hard you worked to get there. Courtney started at Pure Barre after having a career in dancing throughout grade school. Once she graduated, she wanted to find an alternative to dance that would still keep her in shape. Thats when she found Pure Barre. Pure Barre works for her because although it is a high intensity class, its low impact, which works for those with weak joints.

Because of their accepting environment, Courtney has come to love and relish in Pure Barre “Everyone is so empowering no matter the stage you are at in your workout journey. There is so much love in the studios, which really helped me with body love and self esteem.”

While there are tons of other work out classes you can take, ranging from high cardio intense workouts such as Soul Cycle, to total body workouts like classes at OrangeTheory, Haley argues that Pure Barre is unlike any other class experience. “Pure Barre is one of those underrated workouts, people come in thinking it won’t be that rough, yet they always leave dripping in sweat.” Because of Pure Barre’s unique micro movement style, you’re always feeling the burn, but at the same time, you cannot get enough of it. While you’re working out, you’re also utilizing newfound skills, or maybe they’re just improved!

Pure Barre attendees can expect to leave feeling more balanced, strong, and confident after just a few classes.

Overall, Pure Barre is a journey of pride, of realization, and confidence. Through Pure Barre, Haley Stone was able to find her people, her passions, and her voice. By creating an environment that radiates positivity, and is a real no judgement zone (sorry Planet Fitness), you’ll gain some strength physically and mentally, while improving your body, mind and spirit all around.

BEEKO BIKINIS By: Abbie Singleton, a High Point University Alumni

Beeko Bikinis really all started because I had issues with my schedule at HPU! My senior year, I was told I still needed two more classes to graduate that I was not aware of. Because of that, I ended up working it out with the school so I would be able to walk with my class at graduation and just take those two classes online over the summer to officially graduate. While I was really upset that I wouldn’t technically be graduating on time, I was also a little relieved that I would have another summer before getting a full-time job.

It was once summer had started that I realized, while all my friends were moving to new cities and bragging about their new awesome jobs, I was living at home, waitressing and completing my boring and tedious online courses. It was a tough time for me, and I was embarrassed that I could not get a full-time job after college when

it seemed like everyone else was off doing these amazing things. It finally dawned on me that I should not be jealous of my friends and their cool office jobs when that was not even what I actually wanted to be doing with my life.

One thing that I did know was that I wanted to be creative and have something of my own. I have always tossed around this idea of a swimsuit line named Beeko Bikinis, but never thought it would become a reality. I sat down with my parents one night (very scared that they would laugh and tell me to go get a ‘real’ job) and told them of this idea of starting a bathing suit company. The name of the company came to me almost instantly; Beeko Bikinis. Growing up my cousin could never pronounce bathing suit, so she called it a Beeko.

Once my sister and I were born and started called them Beekos, too. I always thought this was the cutest thing and have never been able to forget it.

My mother and I started doing all this research for the next month on how to start a company, how to design bathing suits, how to find a manufacturer, and a million other things. I started saving all my income from waitressing and saving up for this massive manufacturing bill I was about to get hit with. I began drawing some bathing suits that eventually turned into ones that I loved and was proud of. I teamed up with a manufacturer in Indonesia to create my sketches into actual bikini samples. Then I picked my first set of fabrics.

The magical blend I came up with is made in Italy and is the softest, most luxurious bathing suit material you will ever find. It took about a year to complete the sampling phase.

Since I was working with a company overseas on a very different time-zone, each conversation we had was at 1:00 AM my time. They would mail me a sample of my sketch, I would need to make little changes here and there, and send them back. This process would keep repeating until the samples were absolutely perfect. The timing worked out well because it gave me time to save up to pay all my manufacturing costs and launch the company being free of debt, which I’m really proud of !

I named the first three suits, “The Amy,” “The Amanda,” and “The Abbie,” after my cousin, my

sister and myself. Each bikini represented elements of each of our personal styles. One year later and I am ready to launch my second collection, all named after my best friends!

There were so many lows during the year before launching as well as a lot of pressure to be doing something with my life that was more typical and expected. I graduated two years ago and just now am feeling like I’ve accomplished something and am on a steady track. The yearlong process of starting the company was hard because I really had no idea what I was doing and had a lack of direction. The year after launching has been just as hard but for different reasons. I had no idea how hard it would be to get people to buy my product, how to find someone to help me with marketing, and to ultimately make money to live off of.

I have learned so much more than I could have ever imagined! I have met SO many amazing women who bought my bikinis and have felt so lucky to hear the positive feedback.

There is nothing I love more than hearing my customers say how confident or beautiful they feel when they put on a Beeko Bikini…and it was all because I couldn’t technically graduate on time!
