Spring into a New Routine

Letter from the Editor W

elcome back, readers! We are so excited to share with you the Spring 2021 issue of On Point Magazine. It’s been a crazy few months here on campus, and we could all use an escape. Where to, you might ask? The beautiful and stunning European Countryside. Ever since the start of the new year, I’ve been itching to travel and jet-set somewhere far, far away. I fell in love with the idea of traveling to Tuscany, sipping wine, and roaming the streets with your best friends. My original inspiration for this issue came from the Uncommon James Fall 2020 Collection. According to an interview with DailyMail, CEO Kristin Cavallari described the launch as “Whimsical, romantic, a nod to old-world heritage with a modern UJ twist.” I’ve admired Cavallari for years now and love that we could use her newest launch as the backbone of our creative ideas. In this issue, you’ll find lots of ruffles, feminine silhouettes, glowy skin, and silky dresses. Be on the lookout for our skincare and style tips, and get ready to learn about the best-hidden travel gems in Europe. We hope that this issue can provide you with a mental escape from reality as you dream of the European Countryside. The On Point team has been spectacular this semester. Once again, we are proud to feature a wide variety of talent in this issue, including our Creative Director Hailey Conrad, as well as, our Training Editor-in-Chief Katy Parisi. Our new Content Marketing Manager, Maren McGrath, has done a excellent

job of keeping up with all things social, and we’d love for you to check us out on Instagram via (@onpoint.hpu). After being a part of the On Point family for over three years, I am sad to share that this will be our final magazine. With most of our founding team graduated, we’ve decided to pivot the On Point brand here on campus. This new venture will begin in Fall 2021, led by Samara Alsalah. Here is a sneak peek into what she’s envisioning: “On Point will be rebranded to act as a passport to discover new restaurants, bars, clubs, stores, and things to do in High Point, Greensboro, Winston Salem, Charlotte, and Raleigh. We want On Point to act as a guide to help students discover the exciting and unique parts of our surroundings without having to do the research. If you are interested in bringing this idea to life, Fall 2021 applications will come out this summer.” Lastly, I want to thank each member of the On Point team for their continued dedication and enthusiasm. You have all poured your heart and soul into this publication, and I’ve loved getting to work alongside you. A big thank you to our readers and supporters as well. On Point would be nothing without you, and it’s been so fun having you follow along on our journey. As always, stay happy, healthy, and On Point. With Love, Maggie Goble

A Touch of Honey By: Payton Rappold

DIY Honey and Turmeric Face Mask Ingredients: 2 tbsp raw honey ½ tsp turmeric Instructions: - Add ingredients to small bowl and mix together - Apply thin layer of mixture to face and let dry on skin for 20 minutes - Rinse off with warm water It’s no secret that European beauty starts with glowing skin, and guess what? The key ingredients to achieving this are items you most likely already have stored in your kitchen cabinet. Used not only to compliment a cup of tea, honey, surprisingly, is also used in many European skincare practices to help protect and nourish the skin. Studies have shown a magnitude of benefits when using honey, such as microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. These and other properties have been known to help with anti-aging, wound healing, skin cancer treatment, and benefiting autoimmune skin conditions such as Psoriasis and Eczema. Using honey in skincare can be done in many different ways. Some like to mix other ingredients with it, while others use it by itself on the skin. The healthy bacteria found within honey can help with acne, scarring, moisturizing, brightening, anti-aging, and more. However, pairing honey with other ingredients can help personalize and target issues within your skin. Turmeric is also an ingredient that can be beneficial for your skin, specifically targeting acne. The properties found in turmeric help reduce inflammation and skin irritation. Mixing these two in one mask will allow your skin to fight severe acne scarring while also hydrating and brightening your face. This easy two-ingredient face mask is something that can be made quickly and transformed into your at-home glow kit.

Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité: Lessons in French Beauty

By: Jill Monteleone

T

he “French Girl” is one of the most common clichés in makeup, hair, and skincare. If you’re blessed enough to be unfamiliar with this atrocity in cultural generalization, here are the SparkNotes. The French Girl is chic, understated, and despises all indicators of effort. She wears stripes, Burberry trench coats, red lipstick, and pouts to Françoise Hardy all day long. She is the polar opposite of her excessively glamorous, loud, and proud American counterpart. In actuality, this illusion of an effortless, free-flowing look and lifestyle involves a great deal of effort (and cash) and is also extremely exclusionary. If you comb through the significant beauty and fashion influencers modeling this lifestyle and aesthetic, you’ll notice they have some things in common. White, wealthy, waifish Parisiennes (or worse, wannabe Parisiennes) profiteering off of a monotonous, dated, fetishization of what life on the continent must be like. However, this doesn’t mean there is nothing to learn from France and its beauty trends. The diversity of peoples, cultures, and regions in France led to a unique and compelling perspective on beauty, and it isn’t a Paris-centered one. Here is a glimpse into the real-life beauty philosophy of France, through the values from which their Republic was found upon: liberté, égalité, and fraternité. Liberté (Liberty) Freedom of choice in beauty is essential to French women. Given France’s diversity, not every product or style is going to be suitable for every woman! While France is well-known for its top-of-the-line pharmacy beauty brands, and newer international products such as BB cream from Asia are becoming more popular. French women are taking beauty into their own hands as well. Homemade and DIY beauty is increasingly popular in France. The freedom to decide how you present yourself to the world and what tools you will use to do it is empowering and exciting. You don’t need to feel chained to a particular product, lifestyle, or aesthetic. You have the freedom and options to choose what you like, as you want it, and that’s cause for celebration. Égalité (Equality) Equality is a priority we should strive for in every area of life, including in our beauty standards. A growing number of influencers and models in France represent different ethnicities, body types, beauty philosophies, and styles. This is a welcoming change and is more representative of the country as a whole, and seeing the pride and confidence in these influencers is inspiring. Embracing and celebrating our identities for all of their goodness, even our flaws, is such a beautiful thing. This is not to suggest that confidence is easy or required because we all have days where we don’t feel sexy or beautiful at all. This feeling is valid, and recognizing the need to present acceptance of confidence but also struggle is a great way to level the playing field and make all people feel welcome and beautiful in this world. Fraternité (Fraternity) Coming together to love and live is not a uniquely French goal, but as a nation, they have defined themselves through a mission to uplift the masses at whatever cost necessary. In this way, the French celebrate their beauty in solidarity with their fellow women. Advocacy for women and their success is vital in France and has been for some time. When women support each other, they thrive. And there’s nothing more beautiful than a woman living her life as she desires, without apology. The French beauty philosophy isn’t to purchase a specific product or adopt any particular way of life. I know that seems like a cop-out answer, but to define French beauty in any other way would be a misrepresentation. France and its culture emphasize individuality and choice, and in beauty, you can exercise both of those things in an infinite amount of ways. So as you go forward in your quest for your next look, seek what brings you joy because satisfaction and confidence are always on-trend in beauty.

The Simple Slip By: Lucie Miller

In fashion, several items and looks have become staples. White t-shirt and jeans, little black dress, and more. These looks are simple in nature but have remained in style despite the amount of time that has passed. One newer item that has joined this group is the slip dress. Originally a staple in the 90s, the slip dress has regained its deserved popularity over the past year. This style of dress is often defined by its minimalistic characteristics. Usually, they are made from a light, silky material with spaghetti straps and a short or mid-length hem. However, the best part about slip dresses is its

1.

First, for a casual, daytime look there are several ways to wear it. One of my personal favorites is over a white t-shirt, paired with sneakers and simple accessories. This is such a great way to look trendy and put together with not having to put a lot of effort into your outfit. It also works with any combination of these items. My go to is any black slip dress over my favorite white crop top from Forever 21. Then paired with my white Reebok Club C sneakers and Amazon gold hoops for the perfect finishing touch.

2.

Another great way to style it is with a sweater. Layering is the perfect way to stretch your closet and make the most out of what you own. For this look, take your slip dress and wear it underneath any pullover sweater. Then, pair it with some cute sneakers or booties, and your favorite accessories and you are good to go! I love this style because it is such an easy way to help transition your wardrobe from Winter to Spring.

versatility. Slip dresses can pair with almost anything, dressed up or down. This one dress can be worn a million ways, and here are a few simple but trendy ways to do it!

3.

An alternative way to wear it during the day is paired with a matching blazer. When done right, monochrome looks are chic and turn any outfit into a statement. Try pairing a black, midi slip dress with an oversized blazer and booties. This is a great, street style look that is trendy while still being comfortable and effortless. It is also a great day to night look. Switch out the booties for a pair of heels, and you are good to hit the night scene!

4.

Finally, slip dresses are great for a nighttime look. My go to look is paired with a leather jacket and a fun pair of heels. An all-black look with a pop of color in your shoes is a fun and simple way to style a slip dress. It is great for a night out with friends. Like I said, there are probably a million ways to style a slip dress, but these are just a few of my go to looks. Overall, with such a minimalistic style and shape, slip dresses a necessity in every wardrobe.

ave you ever put on an outfit and felt like it’s just missing something? It happens to the best of us. Whether it’s missing the right shoe, a cute scarf, or the right set of earrings, we have all struggled at some point to find that perfect last-minute touch. As warmer weather approaches and our closets turn over from winter to summer, having a stash of last-minute accessories is crucial to complete any look.

European fashion is all about being simplistic yet elegant. When the weather is warm, everyone needs light and airy clothes. The nude tones have defined 2020; light pink, beige, white, and tan are just a few trending colors. While outfits that feature these color tones are stunningly beautiful, they can sometimes leave you feeling like you’re missing something. However, a simple hat can completely solve that problem and might become one of the staple pieces you keep in your closet to add that perfect last-minute touch. A cute hat can enhance any outfit within a matter of seconds. Some of our favorites this year consist of boater hats, cowboy hats, and fedoras. Now let’s break them down and give you a closer look so that you can purchase the perfect one.

A fedora is the perfect mix of a boat hat and a cowboy hat. The fedora started being worn by women in the late 1800s in France. In the late 19th century, the fedora became a symbol of gender equality, being worn by many activists of feminism. As you can see, this hat has come a long way, and it’s back and better than ever. This item can spice up any wardrobe and make an elegant, dainty outfit look strong and powerful. Something we love about fedoras is the multiple color options. Trending right now is army green which gives a bold pop. Even a soft baby pink provides an outfit with the perfect yet subtle pop of color that it might be missing.

th e cowboy h at You might ask yourself how a cowboy hat could be European chic, but you will be surprised at how far this accessory has come within the world of fashion. The cowboy hat has slowly made its way over to European style within the last few years, and this year, it’s a must-have. Whether it’s taupe brown or white, this hat will accentuate any outfit. When choosing a cowboy hat, you can take the simplistic route or go with something a little more unique. We have seen cowboy hats with detailing along the middle and even some that possess higher top sections. Each one is unique, and it’s essential to find one that represents your personality.

A tiny hat can make a huge difference. Adding a hat is the perfect way to make any outfit stand out yet look effortlessly chic. When purchasing a hat, it’s helpful to keep in mind your personality since accessories can enhance that. Whether it’s the color, material, detailing, sizing, or shape, each hat is unique in its own way. Now go to the store and search for the one that’s screaming your name. You won’t regret it! It’s going to be that perfect little touch to every outfit you wear this summer.

th e bo ater h at Boater hats originated in the late 19th century in Venice. Originally only worn by men, the boater hat has become a staple fashion piece for women, especially in Europe. These hats come in different sizes, materials, and colors such as beige, light brown, and white, and the velvet, straw, and wool material add a unique touch to any look. Some options even come with intricate detailing, such as silk ribbon, beading, and embroidering.

he reasons to love the European countryside are never-ending. Tuscany is a whimsical destination full of jaw-dropping views, history, culture, fantastic food, and of course, fashion! The European wardrobe is stylish and sophisticated. It’s common to see the locals dressed nicely, as they are attracted to well-tailored, high-end clothing no matter the occasion. Europeans always seem to look their best, with the idea in mind that simpleis sweeter. Although it is a difficult time for international travel, here is a lookbook of five outfits that are perfect for your next trip to the European Countryside!

Nikita Dress

1 2

My first and favorite piece in the lookbook is the “Nikita Dress” from Reformation. This dress is so versatile and is perfect to wear casually during the day while sightseeing or dress up for a fancy night out. It has a longer length, fitted bodice, and a ruffle hem at the bottom, but the beautiful blue floral print is what I love most.

Hyland Dress Also from Reformation is the “Hyland Dress.” While this piece may be simple, it’s certainly not dull. My favorite part of the dress is the smocked bodice, double puff sleeves, and side slit, making the bottom flow effortlessly.

Blairwood Dress My next pick is the “Blairwood” dress from Lulus. This dreamy dress is stunning, and the best part is the delicate lace detailing. The shape of the piece screams European Countryside as Europeans often wear form-fitted, tailored silhouettes.

N e x t t o Yo u D r e s s Next, I had to include the “Next to You” midi dress from Lulus. The fabric has a Swiss dotted texture all over, and the bodice has a lovely ruffle and slit. This dress is so soft and romantic, making it the perfect day to night outfit to wear in the beautiful region of Tuscany!

Ames Jumpsuit Last but not least is the “Ames Jumpsuit” from Revolve. This jumpsuit shows us that simple is sweeter! Although it’s pretty plain, the sleeves and square neckline make a statement. What’s great about this ivory piece is that you can style it anyway for multiple occasions.

Finally Fresh

By: Madison McFerren

Fruits and vegetables are nature’s vitamins. A healthy lifestyle consists of a diet that contains fruits and veggies. Each of them contains vital nutrients that can help reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. The majority of people in the United States do not consume the recommended minimum amount of fresh produce. Only about one to two percent of citizens eat the appropriate nutrients every day. While it may seem tricky to consume the right amount, it can quickly be done with a few simple lifestyle changes. Keeping fruits out on the counter allows for easy access, as well as a healthy to-go snack. Having a wide variety to choose from is essential, but serving fruits and veggies with every meal will also increase consumption. Just remember, keep the dish colorful.

Below is a pasta dish recipe that will help encourage the consumption of fresh produce. Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 20 mins Total time: 30 mins Serves: 4

Ingredients: -

2 cups uncooked penne pasta (for + protein use Banza chickpea pasta) Butter Olive oil 1 medium diced onion 1 large thinly sliced carrot 1 ½ cups broccoli florets 1 red bell pepper cut in thin strips 1 cup bite-sized asparagus or zucchini pieces 3 cloves minced garlic ¾ vegetable broth About ¼ cup lemon juice Salt and pepper Parmesan cheese (optional) Fresh minced parsley (optional)

Instructions: 1. Cook the penne pasta and save about ¼ cup of pasta water 2. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and olive oil to a large pan over medium heat 3. Add onion and cook for about 1-2 mins; add vegetables in this order and stir for 1-2 minutes after adding each one: carrots, broccoli, red bell pepper, asparagus (or zucchini), minced garlic 4. Season vegetables with a bit of salt and pepper and set aside 5. In the same skillet, add a tablespoon of butter, vegetable broth, lemon juice and ¼ cup of pasta water. Bring to a boil and simmer (2-3 mins). Stir in pasta and continue to simmer until sauce is reduced by half (3-4 mins) 6. Add in vegetables and season with salt and pepper 7. Top with fresh parmesan cheese and serve (optional: garnish with fresh minced parsley and serve with lemon wedges) This dish is perfect for summer! Not only is it fun and bright, but the recipe is full of fresh produce. These ingredients contain nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, folate, and potassium. These nutrients are all there to help keep your body healthy and functioning. So, the next time you’re planning dinner, think about this meal and give it a try. Your body will thank you for it!

ith the spring season right around the corner, now is a great time to update our morning and night routines that could make the rest of our day better. Below, I have some products that I have been loving that have made mornings and nights something to look forward to and leave me feeling refreshed and overall healthier. A product that I’ve been using religiously both in the morning when I wake up and at night before bed is the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. This product is non-drying, so it doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight, unlike some other cleansers I’ve used in the past. It helps a lot with taking my makeup off at night, and in the morning it feels refreshing and rejuvenating on my skin. With the travel-size bottle being sold online at only $9, this is the perfect time to try it out if you’re looking to add a new cleanser to your routine. Another product that I’ve been loving is the La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane Double Repair Facial Moisturizer with SPF. Using a moisturizer with SPF is vital for your skin, as we often don’t realize the effects that the sun can have on us by just walking to class or eating outside. This moisturizer by La Roche-Posay is super lightweight but at the same time makes your skin feel soft and hydrated. You can add this product to your basket online for $19.99 or purchase it at any drug store.

Spring into a New Routine this Season By: Rebecca Bonilla

I love to start my day with a glass of water and a green juice. This quick addition always boosts my energy in the morning, especially for those early classes after a late-night studying. I also drink it as a way to get more vegetables in my diet. While I order my green juice online from Pressed Juicery, many other brands sell bottled juice in-store, or you can make your own at home. I like the Pressed Juicery ones the best because they taste delicious and have all the ingredients listed clearly on the front of the bottle, so you know exactly what’s in it. The one I like (Greens 1 Juice) contains cucumber, celery, spinach, lemon, kale, and parsley, and you can purchase this for $6.75 per bottle on their website. Whether you are a beauty guru or are just starting to get into new products that will help you on your health journey, an enhanced morning and night routine can quickly help. With the warmer weather getting ready to start up again, why not have some new products and habits to bring into the season with you?
