HISTORY OF THE YATES CUP Much has changed in Canadian football since the Yates Cup was first awarded in 1898. The newly formed and grandly styled Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union (CIRFU), consisting of exactly three schools (McGill, Queen’s and Toronto) had been established the previous winter as the first interuniversity league in Canada. The game played was still largely indistinguishable from rugby with 15 men a side. Neither a system of downs nor the forward pass had yet appeared. The Yates Cup marked its 100th season of competition in 2007. The oldest Canadian intercollegiate trophy in any sport, the Yates Cup is North America’s oldest football trophy still being awarded, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a McGill medical graduate in 1893 who had played football while in school. He was a lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, and later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War One. He was the second in command of the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) in Bologna, Italy. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis, which claimed his life in 1915. As originally established, the three founding members played home-and-home series amongst each other, and the top team from that competition was awarded the Yates Cup. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in a conference game. This arrangement continued when the league expanded to four teams with the inclusion of Ottawa (1905-1912), RMC (1913) and finally Western (1929 onward). The league expanded to six teams in 1968 with the admission of McMaster and Waterloo, and for three seasons the regular season alone determined the champion. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 70 to date. There have been a few interruptions and anomalies in the awarding of the Yates Cup over the years. Intercollegiate play was suspended during the two World Wars, meaning the cup remained unawarded in the years 1915-1918 and 1940-1944. The winding-down of hostilities in 1945 permitted a brief four-game schedule to be played that fall, but no official champion was declared because of the truncated season. In 1964, McMaster used an obscure technicality in the league by-laws to challenge the league-champion Queen’s Golden Gaels to a single-game challenge for possession of the Yates Cup, a display of bravado that resulted in a 63-6 walloping for the Marauders. In 1971 the establishment of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association saw the football league double in size, resulting in the need for a playoff structure to determine a league champion. Since that time, the Yates Cup has been awarded to the winner of the playoff series. Between 1974 and 1978, the cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the east and west divisions, and in 1979 the Yates Cup final game between east and west champions also served as a Vanier Cup semifinal.

HISTORY OF THE YATES CUP The Western Mustangs can claim a number of Yates Cup superlatives, winning the trophy 28 times, and have hosted the championship game on 21 occasions. After more than a century, Dr. Yates simple but dignified silver cup now sits commandingly atop a substantial plinth of wooden tiers, proudly displaying the enamelled shields of past champions. Care-worn and a bit unwieldy, the trophy remains the pinnacle achievement of team effort in Ontario university football while embodying the traditions of Canada’s oldest surviving football league. JOURNEY TO THE YATES CUP Quarter-finals

Semifinals

Laurier 42, Guelph 10 The Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the Guelph Gryphons 42-10 in the OUA Quarter-finals on October 30.

Ottawa 32, Laurier 31 The No. 4 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees advanced to the Yates Cup finals over the Laurier Golden Hawks in their quest to becoming the next OUA football champions.

After a shaky first quarter with both quarterbacks falling to injury, Gryphons receiver Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had to step in at the pivot position for Guelph. Hawks quarterback Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, NJ) connected with Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) for the first major of the day six minutes into the game. Defensive lineman Stephen Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.) kicked off Guelph to put the Hawks up 19-0 at the end of the first. The two team’s would exchange field goals between the second and third frames to make it 29-4 going into the final quarter. The Hawks exploded in the fourth with touchdowns from Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) and Rashad La Touche (Whitby, Ont.). Guelph’s lone touchdown came from Nick FitzGibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) on a 54-yard score. On defence, the Gryphon’s Adam Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) had an impressive outing with 14 tackles of which 13 were solo and two assisted. Sebastian Howard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had the lone pick for the visitors, coming off Kelly’s first pass attempt of the game. For Laurier, Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had a solid outing, taking over the place kicking duties for Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.). The fifth year linebacker went 3-for-3 in field goal kicking, hitting two 40-yarders as well as one from 22. He also had two interceptions and five tackles. McMaster 40, Queen’s 19 The No. 7 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders defeated the Queen’s Gaels 40-19 to advance to the OUA semifinals for the second consecutive season. After a nervous start from both teams and neither team being able to capitalize on turnovers, the Marauders took a 14-3 lead at halftime. In the third McMaster came alive when quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) connected with Matt Peressini (Hannon, Ont.) on a 57-yard pass for a touchdown and minutes later found Kevin D’Hollander (London, Ont.) in the end zone giving the Marauders a 30-3 lead heading into the fourth. Queen’s scored a major early on in the fourth but it wouldn’t be enough as Quinlan and D’Hollander connected once again, this time for a 39-yard touchdown strike. Quinlan threw four touchdowns and scored another on the ground in the win. He was 18 for 26 passing for 361 yards in the win. Joey Nemet (Burlington, Ont.) was the top rusher with 94 yards on 19 carriers. Ryan Chmielewski (St. Catharines, Ont.) led the defence with seven tackles and two forced fumbles. Allan Dicks (Abbotsford, BC) and Joey Cupido (Hamilton, Ont.) each picked a ball to add to their season totals.

In the first quarter, Laurier took an early 7-0 lead after putting on the pressure deep in Ottawa’s zone. The Gee-Gees would be quick to respond though. Quarterback Brad Sinopoli (Peterborough, Ont.) connected with third-year receiver Alex Fortier-Labonte (Gatineau, Que.) to tie the game up. By the end of the first, the Gee-Gees would go ahead with a 14-7 lead after an interception from defensive back Chayce Elliott (Burnaby, B.C.) that would allow Ottawa to regain possession of the ball and make two big plays to score their second major. In the second, Laurier would outscore Ottawa 17-2 with majors from Jeff Emberley (Oakville, Ont.) and Anton Bennett (Toronto). Linebacker and place kicker Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) would hit a 36-yard field goal. The Hawks would concede a safety to make the score 24-16 at half. The third quarter saw a 53-yard touchdown from Sinopoli to receiver Ezra Millington (Newmarket, Ont.) to pull the Gee-Gees within one. Still, Laurier would respond as second-year quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) of the Hawks would rush for a touchdown. The Gee-Gees would carry a first and goal into the fourth and would make no mistake as running back Frank Ngandui (Laval, Que.) would rush in for the TD. The two point conversion would be denied and the score would remain 31-29 in favour of Laurier. After some big defensive stops made by the Gee-Gees mid way through the fourth, Ottawa would finally take the lead as third-year Matt Falvo (Welland, Ont.) would kick the go ahead field goal at the end of the fourth. Ottawa secured the one point victory after stopping Laurier’s last drive in the final seconds. Western 34, McMaster 28 A battle of two nationally ranked teams was a semifinal showdown in London, Ont. The No. 7 McMaster Marauders would dominate time possession over the No. 2 Western Mustangs, but 21 unanswered points by Western gave them a cushion to survive their seven turnovers to hold on for the victory.

The Marauders got off to a quick start on offence marching down the field on their first two possessions scoring a 19-yard first goal from Andrew Waugh (Perth, Ont.) and a five-yard touchdown run from quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.). The Mustangs response was arguably a game changer. Andrew Thibaudeau (Kitchener, Ont.) returned a kick for a 104 yard touchdown, tying Western’s school records set back in 1984 and 1986. The kick return quieted the Marauders and Lirim Hajrullahu (St. Catharines, Ont.) would tie up the game just before the end of the first with a 31-yard field goal. McMaster would take the lead again early in the second quarter. Quinlan connected with receiver Kevin D’Hollander (London, Ont.) for a one-handed, 21-yard touchdown catch. Western would respond again as quarterback Donnie Marshall (London, Ont.) would hit Thibaudeau for his second of the game with a 52-yard run and catch to tie up the score again. Western would go ahead with a 24-17 lead at halftime after Jerimy Hipperson (St. Catharines, Ont.) would run in his 12th touchdown of the season. After the half, Western narrowly survived two Marshall interceptions and scored on an eight-yard rushing touchdown from running back Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.). With 21 unanswered points the Mustangs led 31-17 through the third. McMaster would finally respond with a rushing touchdown from Jordan Kozina (Brantford, Ont.).

103rd YATES CUP GAME PREVIEW OTTAWA AND WESTERN BATTLE FOR 103RD YATES CUP It’s a battle of the best of the best for the 103rd Yates Cup. The No. 2 nationally ranked Western Mustangs take their highly regarded defence to the nation’s capital to take on the No. 4 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees and the best offence in Ontario. The Western Mustangs are no strangers to the Yates Cup finals. In 2007, Western won the Yates Cup with an away win over Guelph. The year after, Western hosted and won their most recent title over, ironically, Ottawa. In 2009, the Mustangs travelled to Kingston and lost to the would-be Vanier Cup champion Queen’s Gaels. The loss didn’t come without a price. The Mustangs lost starting quarterback Michael Faulds to eligibility and were looking at a new, younger team in the 2010 season.

Proud supporter of The Yates Cup

The Ottawa Gee-Gees have also had their fair share of Yates Cup appearances in recent history. In 2006, Ottawa won their first Yates Cup since 1976, beating out a talented Laurier squad. Two years later, Ottawa would upset Guelph and Queen’s in their quest for the title, but would ultimately lose to Western. Last year, the Gee-Gees finished fourth in the league and were upset by McMaster in the opening playoff round. Both teams have proved their worth throughout the regular season in 2010. Both went an impressive 7-1 and both have been nationally-ranked all season. When the two teams met, it was only week two of regular season play. In a thrilling match up, Western and Ottawa went head-to-head in the nation’s capital. C

The Gee-Gees found themselves down early in the first due to back-to-back field goals by Western kicker Lirim Hajrullahu (St. Catharines, Ont.). By the end of the quarter, the Gee-Gees were on the board with a field goal of their own to trail 6-3. In the second, the Gee-Gees would take their first lead of the game with a deep pass from quarterback Brad Sinopoli (Peterborough, Ont.) to receiver Ezra Millington (Newmarket, Ont.). Western responded with a passing touchdown of their own from receiver Mike Hegarty (Sarnia, Ont.), leaving the score 16-10 in favour of Western at half.

The third saw no action as Western defence stifled Sinopoli’s offence and even picked off a pass just outside the end zone. Down by six heading into the final frame, Western and Ottawa traded field goals again before the Gee-Gees found themselves in possession of the ball with less than 1:30 on the clock. The Gee-Gees marched down the field with an impressive drive thanks to Sinopoli and receiver Steven Hughes (Ottawa, Ont.). With 30 seconds to go in the game, Sinopoli would connect with Hughes again to tie the game. To seal the deal, kicker Matthew Falvo (Welland, Ont.) would secure the extra point for the win. The story of the game, if not for the season, was Sinopoli’s astounding numbers. Against Western, he threw for 439 yards, connecting with six different receivers. The 2010 MVP will be looked upon to combat Western’s tough defensive core along with season long receivers Matt Bolduc (Ottawa, Ont.), Cyril Adjeitey (Ghana), Millington and Hughes. But will Ottawa be able to stop the run? With Jerimy Hipperson (St. Catharines, Ont.) recording 12 touchdowns this season, Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.) being one of the fastest players in Canada and having sat out last time the two teams met, and on top of that quarterback Donnie Marshall (London, Ont.) being very comfortable rushing himself, the Gee-Gees will have to find a way to stop OUA’s rushing powerhouse. The battle of the best all comes down to this Saturday for a chance to be named the newest Ontario University Athletics Yates Cup Champion.

2010 OUA AWARD WINNERS Most Valuable Player Brad Sinopoli #12 – QB – Ottawa The fourth-year quarterback for the Gee-Gees had an outstanding year, leading Ottawa to first place in OUA with a 7-1 regular season record. Sinopoli threw bullets through the air averaging 344.5 yards per game, completing 184 of 301 passes for 2756 yards and 22 touchdowns. He now sits sixth in the CIS record book for most passing yards in a single season. The pivot also knew when to run the ball, leading Ottawa in rushing covering 534 yards in 42 attempts, and scoring one touchdown on the ground. Sinopoli finished the 2010 regular season first in the OUA and CIS for passing yards, touchdown passes, and completions. He is the sixth Gee-Gee to win the MVP award. J.P. Metras (Linemen of the Year) Matt O’Donnell #66 - OT –Queen’s The fifth-year lineman is currently the biggest in college football. Standing at 6’10’’ and weighing in at 329 lbs., O’Donnell was selected as a CIS First-Team All-Canadian last year with his play as a junior for Queen’s. His agility and athleticism for a big man comes as no surprise as his play has considerably improved from his junior to senior year. Matt’s ability as a pass protector on the left side puts him in a class all by himself and his presence on perimeter run plays is undeniable. His nasty disposition for an offensive lineman is in very high demand at the highest levels of football. O’Donnell is currently ranked in the top five Canadian prospects by the CFL and has attracted NFL interest. Matt becomes the fifth Gael to win the J.P. Metras Trophy for outstanding work as a lineman. President’s Trophy (Standup Defensive Player of the Year) Giancarlo Rapanaro #13 – LB – Laurier This CFL draft pick returned to Laurier for his fifth and final year. The veteran linebacker recorded 23 solo tackles and nine assisted tackles this season. His two sacks in 2010 rank him second on the all-time career sacks list for Laurier with 16.5. Rapanaro also picked off quarterbacks twice this year and ran them back for a total of 90 yards. The fifth-year even returned his one fumble recovery for a touchdown. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers pick sits in fifth-place all-time at Laurier with 130.5 career tackles and is the sixth Golden Hawks to receiver the President’s Trophy. Norm Marshall (Rookie of the Year) Sam Sabourin #44 - LB – Queen’s This first-year made a seamless transition into OUA becoming a starter on defence and special teams in all eight games in the regular season for the Gaels. The rookie set a number of Queen’s school records in 2010 including most tackles in a season with 78, most tackles for loss with nine, most solo tackles in a season with 50 and most tackles in a single game with 13. Sabourin was ranked at No. 3 on the CIS list for tackles in the regular season and had two sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles. The rookie is only the third Gael to win the award, the last being famed quarterback Danny Brannagan. Russ Jackson Award (The name put forward by OUA for the award presented annually by the CIS to the player who best exemplifies the attributes of academic achievement, football skill and citizenship) Dillon Heap #83 - R - Laurier Not only does this fourth-year receiver excel on the field as a Golden Hawk, but also in the classroom and in his community. Last year, Heap set the CIS record for punt return yardage with 350 yards in a season, averaging 15.59 per return. This season, the veteran set the career marks for Laurier for most kickoff return yardage as well as leader in punt return yardage. Heap won the Laurier Presidents award for most outstanding athletic performance as well as the school Triple-A (Academic Achievement Award) for his achievement in the classroom. This Waterloo native is the president of the Latter-day Saints Students Association at Laurier, acting as a liaison between the university and the Kitchener Ontario Institute of Religion. He also served as a full-time missionary from 2006-2008 in the Concepcion, Chile mission. The outstanding receiver also acts as a Sunday school teacher in the Kitchener third Young Single Adult Branch of his church.

NOVEMBER 27TH, 2010

Dave “Tuffy” Knight Coach of the Year presented by Centaur Products Inc. Greg Marshall - Western Since being incepted as the seventh head coach of the Western mustangs football team in program history, Greg Marshall has led the Mustangs to three Yates Cup appearances, having won two of those three contests. Again this year Marshall’s Mustangs will play for their name on the Yates Cup. In 2010, Marshall lost famed quarterback Michael Faulds to eligibility and lost arguably the best running back in the province, Nathan Riva, to injury for most of the season. With these trials and tribulations, Marshall has consistently been able to rally the troops with winning season after winning season. But it’s more than piling on the wins. Marshall is a constant reminder of how much dedication pays off in the sport of football. His hours spent watching game tape, his commitment to each individual team member and his passion for the sport earn him the Coach of the Year honour.
