2013-14 OUA Season Preview By Paul Jones
It’s that time of year for basketball fans. Happy New Year and only hoops fans will understand what I mean. It’s like September for teachers, February for baseball fans or September for hockey lovers. It’s the start of the season and everyone is excited. How can you not be right now? If you’re in Waterloo, it’s all about your Warriors taking down Laurier or if you’re down the road, what can be better than going up the street to silence that cavernous gym. Ottawa and Carleton, York and U of T, we’re talking oil and water here as rivalries are set to indoctrinate athletes and spectators alike. The chase for a win, a playoff berth, a playoff win, a title or a championship will soon be underway. With the OUA season about to tip off, optimism runs high and vision of success dances in the heads of everyone from the student manager, players and coaches to the athletic directors and those faculty members that are sports fans. So let the questions begin. Coaches are wondering how their returning vets will perform? How do I integrate new players? It’s like teaching a course where the curriculum is set but the lessons change on the fly or a cross country race where the route is constantly evolving. Just how far ahead of the pack is the lead group? You are running as fast as you can but the pace may in the end be just a little too rigorous. It’s where the likes of Chantal Vallée and her Windsor Lancers and Dave Smart and his Carleton Ravens hitting the finish line first on a regular basis and are raising banners like they are hanging drapes in different rooms around a house. You know what I mean, you work hard putting up those drapes and it is no insignificant feat to hoist them. A ton of work went into that so called window dressing. It’s just that people don’t always see the work behind them. For every team the hours of practice and time spent in the gym. Ok, another season is like another room, we need more drapes and the players coming in or returning are responsible to get it done. Meanwhile, at other institutions, they are trying to work together to sew something and try and hang it proudly. To all the athletes that will put in hours and hours of time both in the classroom, on the road, in the training room rehabbing injuries and most importantly on the court into the upcoming campaign, I tip my hat because I know from personal experience it’s not easy. Good luck and persevere regardless of the circumstances. To the coaches that live and die with every loss and deal with the stress of different things that many people don’t see, or don’t have a clue about, thank you very much. Keep up the role of being character leaders for your players and others on the faculty. Let’s remember all of this as the season starts and grinds forward. Happy New Year OUA fans because it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

The Road to the OUA By Meaghan Smith, Algoma University
For Algoma University, 2013 is a year of many firsts. The first year offering athletic programming in six different varsity sports; the first year student-athletes will be proudly sporting a new athletics logo on the crest of their jerseys; and the first year student-athletes will be competing in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) conferences. Since applying to the OUA in March of 2012, the University has been on a continuous journey to push its athletic program and student-athletes forward to be able to compete at the highest level of sport in Ontario. For basketball, a varsity program that has been offered at Algoma University since 2001, the road to the OUA has been one of great emphasis. “Our basketball program has a great history and legacy of producing top student-athletes, and competing in championships, including the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) Championships. It is our goal to push our student-athletes into the OUA and continue with this legacy,” says Athletic Director Mark Kontulainen, as he points to numerous OCAA banners on display in the University’s athletic complex, the George Leach Centre (GLC). However, Kontulainen is aware that Algoma U’s initial years in the OUA may include few victories. “Our first years are about competing, team performance and learning what it takes to win at an OUA level. We need the experience before we can concentrate on taking on the elite OUA teams.” Both head coaches on the men’s and women’s teams have been actively recruiting players from across Canada to join the history-making OUA teams at Algoma U, who in time, can help bring the Thunderbirds to that medalling level. On the men’s team, key recruits include Devin Brar from Abbotsford, British Columbia, and Marcus Davis from Romulus, Michigan. “Our team is returning seven players this year, and we are relying on our rookie players to bring size, speed, and shooting precision to the court. We’ve been training together as a squad since our camps in 8 OUA Uncovered

August. I’m happy with the recruits from this year, and in one or two years’ time, know they will be solid players on the court,” adds men’s head coach Thomas Cory, who was a member of the Task Force Committee for building the proposal to the OUA. For head coach Ryan Vetrie, recruiting efforts have been more aggressive, since only two veteran players returned to the Lady Thunderbirds. Recruits such as Daya Bhogal of Aldergrove, British Columbia, Stephanie Jennings from North Bay, Ontario, and Laura Meadows of Woodstock, Ontario have helped propel the squad forward to an OUA-calibre level. Aside from recruiting, the Thunderbirds have been vigorously practicing in between taking on a full course load. “On average, our players are doing drills, practicing, or training for 15 hours a week. Our student-athletes treat being on the team like a part-time job and are dedicated to this transition into the OUA. It’s been quite the lead-up to the season opener on November 1, and we’re giving everything it takes to make the University and our fans proud of us,” says Vetrie. “It’s a big deal going into the OUA, and we want to make sure everyone recognizes the hard work we’ve put into getting this team ready.” While the teams have now had OUA-level exposure in exhibition games at tournaments in both Ontario and Quebec, both the men’s and women’s teams understand their first seasons in the OUA will be about gaining playing experience against other OUA teams. Both the men’s and women’s teams continue to practice daily in order to prepare for their season opener on November 1 against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, and their home opener against the Brock Badgers on November 8.
A Visit to Duke By Robb Fenton
If you’re curious what Nipissing Lakers men’s basketball head coach Chris Cheng is up to these days preparing for the 2014-15 season, it’s safe to say he’s hard at work. Cheng is recruiting vigorously searching for the right young men to suit up for the Lakers in their inaugural OUA season and he’s even gone above and beyond the typical off-season. Cheng recently took a trip to the United States, all the way to Durham, North Carolina to learn and gain valuable information from the one and only, Coach K – Mike Krzyzewski. The head coach of the Duke Blue Devils is one of the most successful basketball coaches in in the world, and is the most successful college coach of all-time. Krzyzewski is a NCAA national champion, a gold medallist and one of the top basketball minds there is, so Cheng felt it was a great opportunity to learn from the best. Cheng was able to make this trip because of a player he coached for five summers in Toronto, who has gone on to become team manager of Krzyzewski’s squad. Cheng said this was a trip that served several purposes and he feels it will pay off not only immediately, but in the long run, for the Lakers basketball programs. “When I first got the job here at Nipissing, I wanted to make sure that I started our program the right way and that we were on a path towards excellence. I also wanted to ensure that everything I did for our program was done with excellence,” Cheng said after returning from his trip. “I thought to myself that X’s and O’s aren’t extremely important right now as this year is devoted to recruiting, building program awareness in the city and across the province and country, and to establish a program culture and identity. So, I decided to go to the best coach that had success in all areas - Coach K came to mind.”
Cheng said there isn’t enough time in the day to talk about all the great stuff he learned and the great experience he had, but he did note a few things stood out to him, things he will definitely be implementing himself when the program at Nipissing is completely up and running. “Being in the presence and learning from the best coach in the world and his staff and program was such an incredible and memorable experience for me as a person and coach. I had access to coaching meetings, film sessions, and practices. What was most overwhelming was to have one on one time with Coach K each day. He taught me the importance of daily communication with my staff, student-athletes, and administration, preparation for each daily task, and to have the commitment from everyone that is helping me with my program. He stressed to always hold them accountable, empower them, and to motivate them,” Cheng noted. “He said ‘even the people of power need to be constantly motivated. It is the only way great things can be done.’ What stood out the most for me was his ability to always learn regardless from who and what coaching level and experience. You think a man who is 66 and in his 34th year at Duke would keep to his ways. He was extremely open to learning from me as much as I was there to learn from him. He sought out my feedback about his practices and meetings and valued my feedback and used my feedback with his team. I learned so much from Coach K and all of his staff members and I look to apply what I learned here to our newly established Lakers men’s basketball program.” Cheng has learned under another great coach and basketball mind as well, this time closer to home in Jay Triano, former national team head coach, whom Cheng worked closely with in the past. Cheng got to see what very few people do, aside from the members of the Blue Devils staff. He was in the heart of one of the top basketball programs in the world, something that’s not lost on him, nor was the opportunity to learn and take in as much as he could. “I witnessed their daily operations and logistics of how their men’s basketball program operates. It was most evident to why they have the success they have and the excellence of their program because of the teamwork, pride, and commitment displayed from all members of the staff, managers, student-athletes, study body, and athletics administration,” Cheng said. This wasn’t just a holiday for Cheng, this was a business trip. And while it was, as Cheng said, a trip of a lifetime, there was more to it than a few days out of the country. “I am extremely devoted to the Nipissing Lakers men’s basketball program, to Nipissing University, and to the City of North Bay, and seeking this professional development opportunity was one of the many steps I will take to ensure that we build a program, identity, culture, and overall brand of excellence on and off the floor,” Cheng explained. “Overall, it was an overwhelming experience. One that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

By Hugh Mullally A basketball coach’s career can come with as many twists and turns as a courtside chair that’s run afoul of Bobby Knight. For Scott Morrison, he’s gone from a small town east coast ball player to being the head of one of the most reputable programs in Canadian university basketball, the Lakehead Thunderwolves. But to the surprise of many, he will not be on the sidelines when his Thunderwolves team takes the floor this season. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be feeding the fire that drives the Lakehead locomotive in 2013-14. 22 OUA Uncovered
Indeed, Morrison will physically be in Portland, Maine, where he has arranged a season-long sabbatical with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA’s Development league. The Red Claws are one of 17 teams in the NBADL, and have had seven of their players called up to play in the NBA since their inception in 2009. On the flip side, the Red Claws have had five players assigned to their roster from the Boston Celtics, their NBA affiliate. This, of course, has happened with the blessing of Lakehead Athletic Director, Tom Warden and that of Lakehead University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson. They understand as well as Scott does that the path to success is not a sprint, but a marathon. In this case, it’s also taken on the look of a relay. For the 2013-14 leg of the pursuit for a CIS championship, Morrison has passed the baton to his GOOD LUCK CARLETON YOUR FRIENDS INtheBUSINESS assistant of nearly a decade, Matt Erdman. FROM One may see it as Morrison returning favour he got as an assistant in 2002 with the women’s team at Dalhousie, when then-head coach Carolyn Savoy took a sabbatical and handed the reins to him for a season as head coach. This invaluable experience helped to open the door to his current post as bench boss with Lakehead. While Erdman will do his best as head coach to turn the page with a program that lost eight players (and five starters) since last season, Morrison will be invigorating his own professional development Working with Great Partners south of the border. As Morrison puts it, “The D-League is not a glamorous league but it is a league meant to develop both players and coaches for the highest level in the world - the NBA. There is no doubt that I will learn a ton in Portland and I’m already enjoying the different work that I am doing.” Morrison’s main job during the season will be to keep a scouting report on every team in the D-league in preparation to play each opponent. Along with the rest of the Red Claws’ coaching staff, Scott will also be helping with the on-court coaching in practice. “It will be a lot of work to keep up with 16 teams for five months,” says Scott. “But I will learn each team’s system as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each player in the D-league.” At the moment the Red Claws are preparing for the NBADL entry draft on November 1, with Morrison analyzing game tape of every guard in the player pool and creating a ranking of their player prospects heading into the draft. While Scott is busy with the Red Claws, his commitment to the success of the Lakehead program remains unwavered. “I’ll still be working on recruiting players, fundraising, next year’s exhibition schedule, and most importantly watching all of our game film to help with the adjustments from game to game, with coach Erdman handling the on-court delivery,” says Morrison. This ‘outside the box’ approach to coaching development at Lakehead strikes a unique balance. Lakehead’s program will receive the benefit of coaching insights and techniques used at the professional level, a shade below the NBA. Morrison will return to Lakehead with a deeper understanding of the game, and interim head coach Matt Erdman will get an opportunity in the limelight at the head of the Thunderwolves bench. As Morrison’s courtside proponents in the Thunderdome could easily tell you, he does some of his best work outside the box.

Kalkan’s been our team leader in rebounding while Bardsley made the most three-pointers in the OUA. The team has a mix of youth and experience, and it will take some time for the team to reach its potential but the 2013-14 edition will be exciting to watch and a very hard working team.” - Coach Jon Kreiner Dwayne Harvey

“We are looking forward to the 2013-2014 season. The players are committed to a new head coach, new coaching staff and a new attitude. This new start coincides with a complete rebrand of the Laurentian Voyageurs. The product that we will put on the court will be hard working, will have a renewed accountability to defence and rebounding and we all will be selfless and connected on offence. Fourth-year players Emma Decloe, Erin Simpson and Rebecca Goodier as well as third-year players Adrienne Moreau, Dani Harris and Dev Bryce will be counted on to lead the charge in this very exciting fresh start. If we work as hard as we can and keep improving with our attention to the details we have enough talent to qualify for the post season.”

Men’s Preview “The OUA is arguably the best top to bottom conference in the country. Every night is a battle with so many strong teams. Carleton has the target on their back but Ryerson, Ottawa, and Queen’s have all shown significant improvement and will be a real challenge. In our own OUA West division several teams have reloaded (Guelph, Lakehead, Laurier) and Windsor is the most veteran group poised to take the next step. I’d like to see us finish in the top two in our division and get to the Final Four. We’ve scheduled a lot of exhibition games this season because there’s a big shift on this team. We have no fifth-year guys, and only two fourth-years. While this will mean a steep learning curve, we have had a very good lead-up over the spring and summer to this fall. The players have worked hard and are gelling as a team. With the experience our rookies gained last year, they have shown they are ready to make an impact this season. Two rookies this season have already made their presence felt: Abby Dixon and Andrea Priamo in exhibition play. Overall, we have increased our roster’s depth and this may prove to be an important factor for competing over the long season. Playing for Dad: Max Allin By Bradley Crawford
When Laurier Golden Hawk Max Allin steps on the basketball court, he plays for more than just the pride of the Purple and Gold. He plays for his father David. “My dad introduced me to the game and coached me when I was younger. I credit most of my success to him,” said Allin, a fifth-year shooting guard. “Other than being with family, basketball was his favourite thing to do. He loved watching us play.” Like his father, Max values family and basketball most in life. As the sixth of eight children, he describes his parents as kind, patient people. All eight siblings played basketball and were coached by their father at some point. Subsequently, Max wears number 8 on his jersey to symbolize the importance of family above all else, a value David instilled in him. Photo Source: Trevor Mahoney
A former athlete at the University of Western Ontario, David Allin taught physical education in the Kent County and Lambton-Kent District School Boards where he coached basketball for 35 years. David established an annual summer basketball camp in 1981 which continues to this day, was the first coach of the Chatham Wildcats Ontario Basketball Association club team, organized exhibition games with Michigan schools, and won 20 championship titles coaching senior basketball teams. Therefore it is no surprise that the Elizabeth II Public School gymnasium and the Chatham High School Basketball League MVP award are named in his honour. Both Max and his younger brother Luke have received the award. All eight Allin children inherited their father’s passion for the game. Three of Max’s older brothers played for Windsor where they won a championship together, his eldest brother was a Golden Hawk for one season, his sisters were excellent high school players, and Luke is a highly sought after recruit entering university next year. Evidently, Max did not have to go very far to organize four-on-four basketball on the driveway of his southwestern Ontario home. Perhaps Allin family pickup games were exactly what David had hoped for and planned all along. The joy of a tight-knit and athletically successful family was shattered in December of 2011, when David was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Those diagnosed with ALS have little hope for long-term survival, as rapid muscular degeneration and atrophy lead to almost certain death within a few years. Suffering from the ravages of an illness that progressively shuts down physical capabilities and functions, the family man would not let ALS deny him his favourite pastime. David and his wife Helen continued to drive across the province every weekend to watch Max play like they always did for each of their children. In the summer of 2012, David was inducted into the Chatham Sports Hall of Fame. No longer able to speak or walk by himself, David stood and walked up to the stage without assistance to accept the award in what was an emotional and proud moment for the entire community. As his condition worsened, he managed to attend the first five games in November of the 2012-2013 Season, during which Max continuously led Laurier in scoring. “Every time I made a basket, I would look up to him and nod,” said Max, who knew that soon, his father would never again be in the stands. David Allin, who was so dearly loved and respected by his family and community, succumbed to ALS on January 4. “He was the best, he was the nicest guy,” said Max. “He would work all day and coach all night. He has been my role model my whole life.”

Max sat out the following two games to mourn the loss of his hero. He returned to action on January 9 to face the OUA West first place Windsor Lancers. Netting 28 points, Allin led his team to a 112-92 upset victory. Amazingly, despite missing two games he went on to lead the OUA and CIS in scoring, finishing the season with 441 points for an average of 23.2 points a game. He was named an OUA West AllStar and Second Team All-Canadian. “I wanted to make him proud,” said Allin. “I know my dad is always watching me play, I’m still playing for him even though he’s not there in the stands.”
When asked how he will help his team be successful this season, Max said that he will lead by example. “Just like my dad always did.”

Men’s Preview “Every year our team has been in the playoffs for as long as I can remember, and obviously that is a goal of ours again. But this year, we are looking to step it up one position and host a home playoff game, something we haven’t done in a long time. It is attainable, and is going to take us continuing to improve our play, but this group is up to the test and very excited about the challenges ahead. Although we are optimistic about what we can accomplish this season, we are aware of being in the OUA East, which is the most competitive division in the country. We believe it is going to take us getting to at least 12 wins to host that game and bring back what we know is the glory of York basketball.” - Head CoachTom Oliveri 12-13 RECORD & REGULAR SEASON PLACING: 8-12, 6th in OUA East PLAYOFF RECORD: 0-1 12-13 AWARD WINNERS & ALL-STARS Daniel Tulloch – OUA east all-rookie team

“The lineup we have for this year bodes well for our team and so our expectations are a lot higher. We believe we can be in the top three or four in our division and challenge for the division title. The league is compressed and the teams are a lot closer than they have been in the last few years. Not only am I expecting improvement, but the players are expecting it of themselves. The attitude of the team has been tremendous in the preseason and we can’t wait to get started in league play.”
