JOURNEY TO THE WILSON CUP FINAL FOUR OUA QUARTER-FINAL - WEST DIVISION

OUA QUARTER-FINAL - EAST DIVISION

Western 49 @ McMaster 83

Ryerson 78 @ Ottawa 79

The McMaster men’s basketball team used a third quarter explosion to defeat the Western Mustangs 83-49 and advance to the OUA Final Four for the first time since 2012.

The Ottawa Gee-Gees punched their ticket to the Wilson Cup Final Four with a thrilling 79-78 win over the Ryerson Rams.

Western was ready to play on the heels of a playoff upset at Lakehead, and the Mustang game plan of slowing the tempo and gong inside for high percentage shots gave McMaster some trouble in the first quarter. Western’s Eric McDonald hit a fall-away shot at the buzzer and the Mustangs held an 18-15 lead after 10 minutes. Looking confident to start the second quarter, Western bumped the lead up to 24-17 and McMaster was still searching for answers. The Mustangs called a timeout with the seven-point lead, perhaps concerned about fatigue, but it allowed the Marauders to regroup. Coming out of the timeout, McMaster got seven straight points from Leon Alexander to tie the game. Trevon McNeil knocked down a three-pointer to give McMaster the lead and suddenly Western was hanging on. McMaster continued to harass the Mustangs on defence and ran the lead up to 31-24 at the intermission. Now playing with the lead, McMaster opened the third quarter by pushing the advantage into double figures. The Marauders outscored Western 33-13 for the quarter to lead 64-37 heading to the final stanza. The fourth quarter saw the Mac advantage surpass 30 points and with five minutes left, Western started to clear the bench, with McMaster following suit. With the reserves for both sides getting some playing time, McMaster was able to win the quarter 19-12 and complete the 34-point victory. Laurier 68 @ Windsor 91 Windsor’s Lien Phillip poured in 28 points and added 10 boards to record the game’s only double-double as the Lancers topped the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks 91-68 to advance to the Wilson Cup Final Four. Nerves were on display in the opening quarter, as the pair of high powered offenses managed just 18 points apiece in the opening frame. It was in the second quarter that Windsor found their stride and pulled away from Laurier. The home side poured in 26 points in the second quarter while holding the Golden Hawks to just 12, taking a 44-30 lead into the half. Used to the spotlight of big games, Windsor never looked back and tacked on 47 second-half points to take the 23 point win. The key to the contest was the play in the paint of the Windsor Lancers. Laurier didn’t have an answer for the twin towers of Phillip and Evan Matthews down low. In addition to Phillip’s 28 and 10, the six-foot-eight forward Matthews added 10 points and four rebounds of his own. Also hitting double digits for Windsor were the backcourt duo of Enrico Diloreto and Josh Collins who netted 18 and 11 points, respectively. When all was said and done, the Lancers had shot an impressive 48.6 percent from the field and hauled in 53 rebounds as a team, including 38 off the defensive glass. With the win the Lancers return to the Wilson Cup Final Four for the second year in a row.

The first half was a back and forth affair, with Ottawa slipping into halftime with a five-point lead. Throughout the first two quarters the Gee-Gees stuck to their electric style of basketball, filled with dunks and deadly three-point shooting that made them the nation’s highest scoring team, but Ryerson stuck with them blow for blow. Midway through the third quarter Ryerson had knotted up the contest as Ottawa struggled coming out of the break. The Gee-Gees righted the ship and managed to reclaim a 65-59 lead heading into the final frame. Ryerson had a never-say-die attitude as they pulled the game even at 67 with 5:22 remaining but that was as close as they would get. In the remaining five minutes of the contest, Ottawa managed to get the lead back up to four points. The Rams nailed a three pointer as time expired, but the Ottawa Gee-Gees walked away with the victory. Terry Thomas of the Gee-Gees led all scorers with 28 points while Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue chipped in 15 points and 10 boards in the victory. Key to the win was Ottawa’s performance from the free-throw line. The Gee-Gees were 18-for-20 on the game, including a perfect 4-for-4 in the final quarter. Laurentian 77 @ Carleton 111 Not leaving anything to chance, the Carleton Ravens took control from the opening tip and never looked back as they downed the Laurentian Voyaguers 111-77 in their OUA East quarter-final. The defending champion Ravens roared out to a 33-20 lead after the opening quarter and stretched their lead to 25 points as they went into the half up 60-35. Laurentian went into the second half with a glimmer of hope, counting 23 points in the third quarter, but they were still unable to gain ground on the Ravens who matched them basket for basket with 23 of their own. Not content with matching baskets, Carleton put their foot on the pedal offensively and shut the door on defence, outscoring Laurentian 28-19 in the final frame to take the 34-point win. Fifth-year forward Tyson Hinz collected 27 points as he led the Carleton attack that featured six players in double figures. Also reaching double digits were Philip Scrubb with 16, Kevin Churchill with 15, Connor Wood with 14, Clinton SpringerWilliams with 13, and Thomas Scrubb with 12. Thomas Scrubb also added 11 assists for the double-double.
