S N O I P M A H C E This time last year, nobody in their right mind was predicting that the Guelph Gryphons would take home a CIS bronze medal and open up this OUA season as defending Queen’s Cup champions. But the Gryphons weren’t asking for your opinion last year, and they probably won’t ask for it again this year either. After finishing off the 20132014 regular season with a 1216 record and being ushered out of playoffs early by the Western Mustangs, it was safe to say nobody expected the Gryphons to turn it around in 2014-2015. Starting off the season with a dismal record of 3-11, Guelph didn’t look like they were ready to turn it around either. On top of that, tragedy struck the Gryphon family twice over the course of the season. C o l e Hamblin, a 21 year-old defencemen hailing from St. Adolphe, Man., was set to lace up the skates for the Gryphons during the 2014-15 season, only to suddenly pass away just two months after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Later in the season

cancer struck the Guelph locker room again, as defenceman Thomas Kohler lost his father in January. “It has been a year of adversity and trust. This team has been through so much,” Gryphon head coach Shawn Camp said after last season. Despite the difficult start and losing key players Mike Hasson and Nicholas Trecapelli to injury, Guelph battled back after the winter break to redeem their year, finishing the regular season 11-13 and working their way into playoffs as the 6th seed in the OUA West division. From there the momentum only grew as the Gryphons found their groove at the right time, cruising through the playoffs with a 7-2 record that culminated in a convincing 4-0 Queen’s Cup championship win over the L’Université du Québec à TroisRivières Patriotes. These teams had met once before in the regular season, during Guelph’s ugly eight game losing skid. The Gryphons battled with their Quebec counterparts for a full two periods before giving up three goals in the third to fall 6-2. But come March, the team garbed in black, gold and red had a different demeanour as they walked onto their home ice. In front of a sold out Gryphon Centre, Guelph struck first thanks to OUA All-Star Nick Huard (North Bay, ON) lacing a shot through traffic to find the top corner of the UQTR net just under a minute into the game. Guelph refused to take their foot off the gas pedal. Just 40 seconds into the second, Scott Simmonds (Uxbridge, ON) fired a perfectly placed shot over the shoulder of

Patriotes goalie Francis Desrosiers and under the crossbar for his third goal of the playoffs to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead. On the other side of the ice, the Gryphons defence refused to give an inch. UQTR would try desperately to get back into the game, but Guelph stood strong defensively, blocking shots and using some great stick checks to keep the Patriotes at bay. Meanwhile, Guelph’s standout rookie goalie Andrew D’Agostini (Scarborough, Ont.) was well on his way to Queen’s Cup MVP honours, making several key stops, stretching, sliding, and performing all sorts of various acrobatics to ensure no rubber touched the back of the Guelph net. As the clock wound down to zero, the Gryphons swarmed D’Agostini in celebration of their 4-0 Queen’s Cup victory, the first for Guelph in 18 years. Nick Huard was named the Porter Player of the Playoffs, finishing with seven goals in nine games, and would continue his heroics at the CIS championships tacking on another four points in three games. This year the Gryphons will have to do some re-tooling, as a large chunk of their veteran core have moved on. Huard, winger Teal Burns and defenceman Steven Strong, were all major contributors last year who are now looking to take their talents to the next level. Four other veterans finished their careers with Guelph last season and will also move on, leaving room for young players to make their mark. D’Agostini will return for the Gryphs, but he will have some company at the goalie position

with three other candidates looking for roster spots. Secondyear goaltender Keith Hamilton (Kelowna, BC) shared time with D’Agostini during Brock’s Steel Blade preseason tournament in a losing effort, falling to Brock twice in the tourney. The preseason invitational, which also included the Brock Badgers and Windsor Lancers was an early chance for teams to get in some OUA competition before the season begins. Guelph lost their first matchup to Brock 4-2, then bounced back to knock off the Lancers by the same score, only to fall to the Badgers again, albeit in a closer fashion with a 4-3 overtime loss. The OUA hockey regular season begins Saturday October 3rd, as the RMC Paladins, led by new head coach Richard Lim, head to North Bay, Ont. to face the Nipissing Lakers to kick-off the regular season. Two nationally ranked teams from last season will meet up during the opening weekend when No. 6 Gryphons head to Windsor, Ont. to face off against the No. 10 Lancers. Meanwhile, the No. 5 ranked Patriotes will look to bounce back from their Queen’s Cup defeat as they start their year off in Toronto, Ont. taking on the Varsity Blues. The No. 7 ranked McGill Redmen, the only other nationally ranked OUA team, will kick off their season against the UOIT Ridgebacks as they head to Oshawa, Ont. on Friday October 9th.

SEASON PREVIEW The Brock Badgers men’s hockey team returns just 13 players from a year ago, highlighted by forwards Sammy Banga (Windsor, Ont.) and Jamie Kendra (Markham, Ont.) who finished second and third in team scoring. The Badgers have a talented incoming class highlighted by three NCAA transfers in forwards Josh Timpano (Orillia, Ont. / Oswego State), Chris Maniccia (St. Catharines, Ont. /UMass-Lowell) and Mitch Nardi (Hamilton, Ont. / Lake Superior State). Another key addition up front is Adam Lloyd (Orleans, Ont. / Carleton Place Canadians). Anchoring the Badgers blueline are fifth year Dan Tanel (Mississauga, Ont.), second year Evan Morden (Swan River, Man.) and second year Patrick Volpe (Burlington, Ont.). Key newcomers on the Badgers blueline include: Dallas Rossiter (Surrey, BC / Yorkton Terriers), Skylar Pacheco (Kitimat, BC / Cowichan Valley Capitals), Jeff Corbett (Uxbridge, Ont./ Sudbury Wolves) Jake Cardwell (Niagara Falls, Ont. / Carleton Ravens). In goal the Badgers return second year Clint Windsor (Hamilton, Ont.) and third year Real Cormier (Trenton, Ont.). Brock lost five of their top eight scorers including leading scorer Andrew Radjenovic. They also graduated five fifth year seniors in Kaine Geldart, Anthony Geldart, Jordan Gignac and captain Mike McGurk, a five year academic All-Canadian.

SEASON PREVIEW The Carleton University men’s hockey team has made significant improvements over the tenure of head coach Marty Johnston (96-35-9), who enters his 6th season as the Ravens’ bench boss in 2015-16. Two seasons ago, Carleton successfully made it to the 2014 CIS Nationals, which was a tremendous accomplishment for a young program that was only reestablished as a CIS member hockey institution in 200708. While the 2014-15 team (20-5-1) had plenty of success during the regular season with the third highest point total (41 pts) amongst the 19-team OUA league, they suffered an early playoff exit in a two-game sweep at the hands of the UQTR Patriotes in the East Division semi-finals with two heartbreaking overtime losses. The 2015-16 Carleton Ravens will see plenty of new faces in the lineup including D Jeremie Fraser (Cantley, QC), D Connor Boland (Whitby, ON) and F Brett Welychka (London, ON). The Ravens recently completed a European Tour in September where they went undefeated with a 3-0 record against pro teams EC Peiting (Germany), Ritten Sport (Italy), and EC Kitzbuhel (Austria). The trip provided the team’s newcomers with an outlet to develop chemistry with the Ravens’ veterans as well as give the coaching staff some time to experiment with different line combinations. While Carleton needs to fill the void of losing three of their top six scorers from the 2014-15 campaign, they have built a strong recruiting pipeline that has been successful in recent years and the program continues to find ways to win. Expectations have grown and the team will expect a similar performance to its last two league campaigns. The Ravens should be a competitive group that vies for a deepplayoff run once again this season.

“We look forward to a great season at the Ice House. We’ve lost some key players to graduation this year and have added nine new faces to our dressing room. Our leadership group led by new captain Joey West will be important in establishing the standard for Ravens hockey.” – Marty Johnston, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Concordia’s men’s hockey team goes into the 2015-16 season with a solid number of veterans in the lineup, some exceptionally talented newcomers, and a whole new coaching staff. Captain and 2015 Randy Gregg award winner Olivier Hinse will be back with the Stingers for his fourth season. In addition to his leadership, the two-time OUA all-star will be relied on to continue racking up points. In 26 games last year, he scored 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points. His 18 goals ranked him second in CIS. The Stingers return six of their top seven scorers from 2015-16, including Hinse, Scott Oke, Dany Potvin, Domenic Beauchemin, all who averaged a point a game. Beauchemin was named to the OUA East all-rookie team last spring. Assistant captain and exceptionally capable defenceman Youssef Kabbaj is back to lead the blueliners. A couple of key newcomers to watch are Frederic Roy and Luca Ciampini – both will add significant fire-power to an already potent offence. Finally, long serving coach Kevin Figsby has moved on, and Marc-André Element, one of Concordia’s all-time great players and team captains, has assumed the reins on an interim basis. Since graduating in 2011, Element has had success coaching at the midget AAA and junior AAA levels. He brings great passion and energy to the program as witnessed by his success recruiting over the short time he had to work with since being hired on July 27th. Element has also brought two highly respected former players with him to the team. Jesse Goodsell and Marc-André Rizk will serve as assistant coaches.

“This season I think fans can expect to see a well prepared Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team. It will be a disciplined team with a strong work ethic and a winning attitude.” – Marc-André Element, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The 2014-15 season was an unforgettable one for the Gryphons Men’s Hockey team. Their incredible mid-season turnaround saw them go from dead last in the standings at the Christmas break to OUA Champions and CIS Bronze medalists by season’s end. While the Gryphons lose leading scorer Nick Huard and Captain Dan Broussard, the team also returns a solid core of players, the majority of whom are still only in their second or third year of eligibility. In fact, of the 28 players on the Gryphons 2015-16 roster, just two are in their fourth year of eligibility while just one player returns for a fifth.

“This year, we go from the hunters to the hunted. We have a hard-working group but it will be a tough road ahead and will be all about how we handle success.” – Shawn Camp, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves hockey program are pleased to announce the roster for the 2015-16 season. The team will carry 26 players consisting of 14 forwards, 9 defencemen and 3 goalies. The squad comprises 2 fifth-year seniors, 3 seniors, 4 juniors, 9 sophomores, and 8 freshmen, making the team one of Lakehead’s youngest in recent years. The 14 forwards are seniors Carson Dubchak and Kelin Ainsworth; juniors Cody Alcock and David Quesnele; sophomores Nathan Cull, Jake Wright, Austin McDonald, Dylan Butler, Trevor Hynnes, Brennen Dubchak and E.J. Faust; and freshmen Billy Jenkins, Garick Gray and Sam Schutt. The 9 defencemen are fifth-year senior Luke Maw; senior Jay Gilbert; junior Cody Kostecki; sophomores Justin Sefton and Tyler Anton; and freshmen Tyler Kunz, Linden Springer, Jake Ringuette and Matt Alexander. The 3 goalies are fifth-year senior Jeff Bosch, junior Justin McDonald and freshman Devin Green. Wolves’ Head Coach Bill McDonald said that paring down the roster is one of the toughest aspects of the job. “After a very competitive training camp, the coaching staff made our selections and as usual, there were some difficult decisions to make. It’s never fun when you tell someone that they didn’t make the squad. That being said, I like the youth on this team. Now it’s our job as coaches to bring them together as a competitive group that will attempt to reach the team goals we will set for ourselves – and hopefully entertain our fans in the process.” Lakehead’s third-year bench boss added,

“There is still going to be ongoing competition for ice time, because we’ve got 26 men on our roster and we can only dress 20 players a game. So now the guys that made the cut will have to compete for regular season ice time and that process will begin on September 25th against Manitoba.”

SEASON PREVIEW The Laurentian Voyageurs men’s hockey team is coming off of a historic 2014-15 season as they hosted their first home playoff game in 15 years, finishing the season with a 14-9-3 record and blowing away their 5-23 record from the previous year. Highlighting the returning class for the Voyageurs is defensive standout Vincent Llorca, an OUA East second-team all-star who set a school record for defencemen when he scored five goals in a 7-6 win against the Laurier Golden Hawks on November 1st. Llorca finished the season ranked 6th in the OUA among defencemen with 21 points. Nick Esposto will headline the offense as he led the Voyageurs with 23 points in 20 games, including four game-winning goals, good for fifth overall in the OUA, while the last line of defence includes fourth-year goaltender Alain Valiquette who enjoyed a 9-6 record and .908 save percentage last season. The Voyageurs welcome a strong recruiting class that includes forwards Brent Pedersen, Jacob Smith and Dave Chiarelli along with defencemen Jayme Forslund and Kaden Ruest.

“We are optimistic that with the addition of some key recruits, as well as bringing in a couple of transfers we will have the depth necessary to compete in a very strong Eastern Conference.” – Craig Duncanson, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Following two straight seasons of missing the playoffs, there is one clear goal for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in 2015-16 and that is to return to the OUA postseason. Laurier missed out on the playoffs last season by a single point in the very competitive OUA West division. Needing a win in their final regular season game against Lakehead, Laurier fell one goal short as the Thunderwolves vaulted them in the standings to grab the seventh spot in the conference. As the Hawks reload for the upcoming year, they will be missing their two leading scorers from a year ago; Captain Tyler Stothers, who had 17 goals last year, graduated; while Zach Lorentz, who led the team in assists with 18, left the team. However, the Hawks return a solid veteran core up front that will look to pick up the offensive slack. Among them are new captain Greg Cerilli, who missed much of last season with an injury, as well as fourth year forwards Ryan Lopes and Derek Schoenmakers. Head Coach Greg Puhalski has also brought in a talented group of rookie forwards, led by former Elmira Sugar King Will Cook along with Ryan Langan, who played for Dieppe in the Maritime Hockey League. On the blueline, former QMJHL’er Matt Provost will anchor Laurier’s defensive group along with second year Matthew Franczyk. New this year is another former Sugar King, Mac Clutsam, who also spent parts of three seasons in the OHL. In goal, three netminders will battle for the starting role as Vinny Merante and Colin Furlong return from last year’s squad. The new addition is former Kitchener Dutchman Marc Williams, who was the GOJHL MVP two years ago.

“I believe we have a team that will work. If we combine our work ethic and we focus on our team play, then we will get our share of wins. The goal is to return to the playoffs and I believe we can accomplish that this season.” – Greg Puhalski, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The McGill University Redmen enter their 139th season of hockey and are expected to be among the top contenders for the OUA Queen’s Cup championship, after reaching the league’s title game six times in the last eight years, winning on four of those occasions. “We have pretty much a totally different look up front,” says head coach Kelly Nobes, who had a strong recruiting class and is back for his sixth season with a young squad that has lost 14 players to graduation. The new-look lineup features 10 new faces, along with five sophomores, six juniors and five seniors. The group includes 17 players with QMJHL experience and four products from the OHL.

“One of our challenges with a young group like this is to find some chemistry within our lines and to see the guys establish their roles. There is a lot of energy and much enthusiasm in our camp. It will be a year that’s going to have challenges but with the right attitude, it will be a lot of fun,” said Head Coach Kelly Nobes. The team’s strength will be their goaltending and defensive corps. OUA allstar netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard has returned after posting a 13-3-0 record with one shutout last season. The 5-foot-1, 178-pound junior led all CIS goaltenders with a stingy 1.74 goals against average and a suffocating .944 save percentage. Also vying for playing time will be senior Karel St-Laurent (8-2-0, 1.91, .932) and Joe Fleschler, a freshman from Drummondville of the QMJHL. Among the key defencemen lost are Dominic Poulin (1-7-8), Guillaume Monast (2-5-7), J.P. Mathieu (0-4-4) and Hugo Laporte (0-3-3). The offence will be bolstered by the addition of two veteran centres from other CIS programs, namely Rock Regimbald (25GP: 3-15-18), a transfer from the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Liam Heelis, the 2014 CIS player of the year who tallied 51 goals and 92 points in 109 career contests with Acadia.

SEASON PREVIEW It’s almost a given that the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team will make the playoffs – they haven’t missed since they began play six years ago. The question isn’t if they’ll get there, but how far they’ll go once they’re there. Last year, they were eliminated in the first round, but with a few key additions, plus a solid core of returning players, expectations are a little higher this year. The team finished with a 12-12-2 record, which put them in sixth place, just one back of fifth and only five away from home ice advantage. The Lakers put together an impressive 5-2-0 record at the end of October and into November to put themselves in a good spot to claim home ice advantage. Other good runs at the end of the first semester and the beginning of the second, where the team went 4-1-0, secured the Lakers a playoff spot. The goal will once again to be to qualify for the post-season and make a run when they’re there.

“With a large number of returnees I am optimistic the team can be in the mix for a top four position in the Eastern Conference. Returning players complement our 5th year captain Dane Horvat and veteran players. We have a good mix of skill, size, grit and role players to be a solid team.” – Mike McParland, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Queen’s men’s hockey team will begin their 2015-16 season on Friday October 9th on the road against local rival RMC. The Gaels are coming off an up and down season finishing with a 13-12-1 record, which saw them finish 5th in the East Division. They matched up against Laurentian in the first round of the playoffs where they defeated the Voyageurs 2-1 in a best of three series. The men’s team met the McGill Redman in the second round losing 2-0 in a best of three OUA semifinal playoff matchup. The Gaels 2015-16 campaign outlook remains very strong despite last year’s disappointing end. The Gaels will once again be led by Brett Gibson who is entering his 10th season at Head Coach with an overall career season record of 114-105-31. Accompanying Coach Gibson on the bench will be Assistant Coaches Andrew Haussler and Tony Cimellaro. The Gaels 2015-16 lineup will once again feature OUA All-Star’s Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) and Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.), as well as veteran forwards Patrick McGillis (Calgary) and Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.). With a mix of key returning veterans and the debut of some highly recruited players coming into the hockey program, the Gaels will be looking to advance past the OUA playoff semifinal which is something they haven’t accomplished in years.

“Coming into the 20152016 season we are looking to become a more consistent team on a nightly basis. It is no secret we have a very talented group of players and can compete with anyone. The top teams do not take nights off, and that is the message our Coaching staff will be hammering home in order to take the next step into the upper echelon.” – Brett Gibson, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Coming into this season, the leadership group intends for this year’s team to reflect the grit, determination, and pride that have been synonymous with RMC teams of the past. The Paladins look to take a step in the right direction this season in becoming a playoff contender, and a team that competes day in and day out. RMC will be put to the test early, as they face Nipissing and then return home to battle cross town rival Queen’s and UOIT over the first two weekends of the season. A strong start to the year would go a long way to building confidence and establishing a foundation for the season. A couple of key dates for the Paladins include the 80th edition of the RMC / West Point Hockey game, being played on Saturday January 23rd, followed by the 30th Annual Carr-Harris Cup game against Queens on Feb 4th. The storied history of both series typically brings out the best in the teams involved, especially with both games being played in front of an energetic crowd at the K-Rock Center in Kingston. New to the team this season is Head Coach Richard Lim, who takes over for Adam Shell, who resigned earlier this summer after eight seasons at the helm. Lim arrives at RMC with a strong background in both the college and the hockey program. He played five seasons for the Paladins from 2006-2011, and was named team captain in his final year. Upon graduation, he served as an assistant coach with the team from 2011-2013.

“I am very excited and honoured to be back at my alma mater as the Head Coach of RMC. The returning players are enthusiastic and eager to start the process of building a successful program.” – Richard Lim, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Ryerson Rams enter the 2015-16 season with 12 new faces as head coach Graham Wise had one of his largest recruiting classes in his ten years with the program. The Rams have qualified for the postseason in each of the last four years and are looking to extend that streak with another successful season. Last year the Rams netted 101 goals, and with five of the six players who netted 20 or more points last year returning to the Rams lineup, including fifth year senior Mitch Gallant and fourth year captain Michael Fine, this year’s edition of the Rams should be among the offensive league leaders once again. Defensively, the Rams return their top pairing of Alex Basso, an OUA West first-team all-star as a rookie last year, and Keevin Cutting. After playing every minute of every game last year, fifth year goaltender Troy Passingham is back in the Rams crease for his final season. Before the 2015-16 season got underway, three Rams players were selected to attend NHL Rookie Camps. Defenceman Alex Basso reported to Washington while recruits Chris Marchese (forward) went to Carolina camp and Taylor Dupuis (goaltender) attended the New York Rangers camp. Ryerson opens the season against the Concordia Stingers on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

“With a solid group of returning and recruited players, the team hopes to have a successful season.” – Graham Wise, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team enters the 2015-16 season filled with optimism after an OUA West semifinal appearance last year, which included a first-round playoff victory over intown rivals, Ryerson Rams. “You sometimes get nervous about the graduation of 10 players but we are really happy with the young guys we’ve brought in and more importantly with the development of the guys returning,” said Varsity Blues head coach Darren Lowe. Despite losing two of their top three forwards in Jeff Brown and Michael Markovic, U of T returns a strong core of offensive forwards. Returning captain Andrew Doyle is back to lead the squad and will look to fourth-year standouts Christian Finch and Patrick Marsh, as well as thirdyear forward Russell Turner to lead a young group of forwards. On the backend, the defensive core is set to be led by Winnipeg, Manitoba native Dylan Heide. Heide led all U of T defencemen last season with 18 points from the blue line, playing in all 27 regular season games. The Blues will also look to a pair of third-year defencemen, Corey Jackson and Charlie Connell, to round out the group. The Blues are excited about their trio between the pipes. Returning to the squad are fifth-year Brett Willows and third-year Michael Nishi who split time last season, with Nishi appearing in 13 regular season games and Willows appearing in 10. They are joined by newcomer Andrew Hunt who will challenge the U of T veterans after recently playing for Borlange HF and Hofors HC in the Swedish league.

“Our goal this year, like every year, is to be a playoff team and try to be better than we were last year. I think we have the personnel to get past that second round and get ourselves in a position to win a championship.” – Darren Lowe, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Ridgebacks returned to the playoffs in 2015 under the leadership of firstyear head coach Craig Fisher. Now the expectations are to get past the first round for the first time in program history. Head coach Craig Fisher is hoping that with the number of key recruits added to the roster, combined with the returning veterans, the Ridgebacks will get over the first round hump. One of those key returning veterans is fifth year senior Luke VanMoerkerke (Tillsonburg, Ont.), who spent last season in the stands after suffering an injury during the preseason. The former Brampton Battalion forward has played in 105 OUA conference games, scoring 27 goals and 46 assists to sit fourth all-time in Ridgeback scoring. Known for his scoring prowess in his first two seasons in the OUA, Mitch Bennett (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) is moving back to defence, which is his natural position. The Ridgeback coaching staff is hoping that the third-year criminology and justice studies major will continue to be an offensive threat, especially on the power play. Goalie Brendan O’Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) looks to build off his freshman campaign where he appeared in 15 games and posted a 7-8 record. He will be backed up by a couple of new faces with Ben Csiernik (Hamilton, Ont.) and Andrew Winsor (Cobourg, Ont.) being added to the lineup.

“I’m very excited to start my second year as head coach. The first year is always a transitional year so it is very rewarding to see the culture changes that I hold important start to take root. Brendan O’Neill will be counted on to provide the same outstanding goaltending that he delivered last season and he will be aided by a much improved back end which features a bevy of intelligent puck-movers. We aim to be a fast and physical team that is tough to play against night in, night out.” – Craig Fisher, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW It was a difficult way to end the season for the L’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes, falling short to Guelph in both of their medal games in the OUA and CIS championships. UQTR finished the regular season sitting at third in the OUA East with a record of 19-4-3. The Patriotes were the offensive powerhouse of the league, leading the OUA in goals (118) and goals per game (4.54) and finishing second in assists (196). Third-year forward Marc-Olivier Mimar led the team in points with 35, and forward Guillaume Asselin wasn’t far behind with 34. Both players finished in the top 10 for points in the CIS. The Patriotes will look to finish what they started last year, after falling twice in playoffs to a Guelph Gryphons team on a hot streak. The first game cost them an OUA gold medal, and the second one sent them home from the CIS championship with a fourth place finish. This year veteran Martin Lefebvre was unanimously chosen to succeed Tommy Tremblay as Captain of the Patriotes, and the 23 year old lefty will rely on a solid core of returnees to help lead this team back to the Championship. Mimar returns, as well as Pierre-Olivier Morin, Tommy Giroux and Philippe Lefebvre. Expect to be hearing these names again come playoff time. Head Coach Marc-Etienne Hubert is excited about UQTR’s new blue chip prospect Charles-David Beaudoin. The 21 year old defenceman will immediately make an impact on the blue line for the Patriotes after a five year stint in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he was a firstround pick.

SEASON PREVIEW The Waterloo men’s hockey team looks poised for another strong regular season while hoping to avoid disappointment in the playoffs. Last season, the Warriors went 17-8-2 while knocking off some of the top teams in the province, but ran into a hot Guelph team in the opening round of the playoffs. Guelph would end up winning the Queen’s Cup while capturing a bronze medal at the University Cup. This season, the Warriors return some key veterans up front, as Colin Behenna and Chris Chappell return after putting up some impressive stats last season. Behenna led his squad in points with 31 (16g, 15a) and was 20th in the nation, while Chappell was only one point behind at 30 (10g, 20a). Defensively, the Warriors look to have the deepest backend in recent memory with the return of three stud blue liners, Joe Underwood, Steven Silas and Mike Moffat. Captain Underwood will be back for his final year of eligibility and will provide leadership and stability on the backend while providing offence at opportune times, including the power play. Silas returns for his third year after a strong sophomore campaign, while Moffat proved to be one of the top rookie defenceman in the league last season with his strong two-way play. Between the pipes the Warriors are setup well with the return of Mike Morrison and Chris Hurry who provide a strong onetwo punch in net for the black and gold.

“Each year the depth of talent continues to grow in the OUA and with 8 new faces and some key veterans returning we look forward to the challenge once again. Every game matters in such a competitive conference and we hope that we can continue to be one of the tougher teams to play against.” – Brian Bourque, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW It’s often been said that a lot can change within a year, and that’s certainly the case with the Western Mustangs men’s hockey team, as the departure of a number of players along with the influx of 11 new recruits means that there will be a new look to team for the 2015-16 season. While 10 players from last year’s roster have moved on, including the team’s three leading scorers, a number of key figures have returned including defencemen Jake Worrad and David Corrente, forwards Noah Schwartz and Shaun Furlong, and netminder Greg Dodds. Although they may be light on CIS experience, this year’s rookie class is an impressive one that is led by goaltender Peter Delmas. Delmas actually joined the Mustangs last season from the ECHL’s Gwinnett Gladiators, however the Bedford, Nova Scotia native didn’t suit up for the squad last year as his pro experience required him to sit out a majority of the season due to CIS eligibility rules. The former second round pick of the Colorado Avalanche should form one of the league’s top goaltending tandems alongside Dodds. Eight members of the recruiting class boast CHL experience, including Cole Benson, who won two WHL titles and the 2014 Memorial Cup as a member of the Edmonton Oil Kings, and Connor Chartier who after a four-year career with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs helped the BCHL’s Penticton Vees win the Western Canada Cup, scoring 19 points in 22 playoff games, including the championship winning goal in overtime. This year’s Mustangs squad will certainly have a much different look compared to the team that took the ice at the beginning of last season, however head coach Clarke Singer has proven time and again that his teams are always a threat in the competitive OUA West, and expect this year to be no different.

“We are looking forward to a very exciting battle in the OUA West Conference in 2015-16. We will have a very young team but I hope by the time playoffs arrive we are able to compete with the best teams in the conference.” – Clarke Singer, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW TheWindsor Lancer men’s hockey team is set to make another run for the Queen’s Cup title, and a third appearance at the CIS University Cup. After claiming their first Queen’s Cup Championship in 16 years in 2013-14, the Lancers have continued to make strides towards their first CIS Championship title. The outlook for 2015-16 is a positive one for the Lancers, as they are returning a number of key players from last year’s OUA bronze medal squad, including OUA defenseman of the year and CIS all-Canadian Kenny Bradford, and OUA rookie of the year Dylan Denomme. Bradford tied the OUA lead for points by a defenceman with 28, scoring eight goals and adding 20 assists. Denomme, in his first year of OUA hockey, finished second on the Lancers in points with 31, while appearing in all 27 games. The Lancers will not be without a couple of significant losses this year, as CIS player of the Year Spencer Pommells and OUA goaltender of the Year Parker Van Buskirk graduated following last season. Captain Drew Palmer and forward Matt Beaudoin also completed their education, leaving holes at both the front and back of the line-up. Coach Kevin Hamlin hopes to begin filling those voids with his 2015-16 recruiting class, a group with a lot of skill that will be able to contribute right away. The group includes transfer Steve Anthony from the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. Anthony is a leader that can offer remarkable leadership and experience to the young Lancer squad.

“We had a large graduating class but we also have a core group that has been to two National Championship tournaments. Our expectations are high and each member of this team will contribute in a meaningful way before this season is over. You will see this group grow exponentially throughout the season and I’m confident we can continue our tradition of becoming one of the top teams in Ontario..” – Kevin Hamlin, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW It’s a new era for the York University Lions men’s hockey team with a new head coach at the helm, and the squad will be looking to build off the momentum generated by his hiring by getting back into the playoffs this season. Chris Dennis was hired in June as the 15th head coach in program history and brings to York more than 10 years of experience with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He quickly implemented a new system for the Lions and is hoping to guide a young, talented team into the playoffs after a late-season losing streak put them one point out of the final playoff spot last year.

“I expect us to work hard and get better,” said Dennis. “It will be a work in progress as the year goes on and we will get stronger each and every game. By January and February I hope we are in a good spot for the playoffs and ready to challenge some of the top teams. We need a little more stability in the way we play, and based on what I’ve seen so far with this group, they work extremely hard and open to new ideas and changing things so we just need to see the consistency to keep us in every game.” Dennis inherited a team that features 17 players in their first or second year with the program, and many of them came to York with tremendous junior resumes. Like last year, the strength of the team is on the back end. The 2014-15 defensive unit allowed just 89 goals in 27 games, the fourth best mark in the OUA West Division, and will be led again this season by goaltender Chris Perugini and defencemen Shayne Rover and Tyler Mort, a trio of veterans who have blossomed into leaders on the team. In addition to the high-scoring defenders, the Lions will rely on a number of different forwards to find the back of the net. Trevor Petersen, Mitch VanTeeling and Colton Vannucci all had strong rookie seasons with at least 10 points each, and they will join veteran captain Tyler McGeethe as well as Mark Cross to provide the scoring.

P M A H C UA It must have been an incredibly comforting feeling being a Western Mustang women’s hockey fan last season. Knowing that you really wouldn’t have to experience too much disappointment throughout the year is basically the dream for every sports fan. Imagine being a Chicago Bulls fan during the Michael Jordan era. Sure you might lose a game occasionally, but overall fans get to enjoy the euphoric feeling of success on a regular basis, particularly when it counts. It was the same sensation for Mustang fans, as they watched their women’s squad cruise through any competition on their way to the programs first ever OUA and CIS championships. The Mustangs stampeded their way to a 20 win season, losing only one game in regulation and three in overtime. Their 20-1-3 record was good enough for first place in the OUA standings, marking the first time in Mustangs program history they had ever finished at the top of the standings. Led by OUA women’s hockey cocoaches of the year, Chris Higgins and Dave Barrett, the Mustangs drove through playoffs virtually untouched, going 8-0 in tournament games. During their run through the CIS finals, the purple powerhouse allowed just one goal on 94 shots, including shutouts against the two

highest scoring offences in the country in the Montreal Carabins and McGill Martlets. Dave Barrett takes control of the head coaching duties this season, as Higgins will focus on player recruitment and program development. Luckily Barrett won’t be required to re-invent the wheel this season, as a major core of veterans returns for another run at an OUA championship. Fourth-year goaltender Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.) returns to the Mustangs as a force to be reckoned with between the posts. Campbell took home CIS tournament MVP honours thanks to her brickwall demeanour through nationals, but also performed at a high level throughout the regular season. Campbell led OUA in total wins (16) and save percentage (.954) while also finishing second in goals against average (1.23). While all of this is impressive, her most important stat line was the 38 save shutout she tallied in the CIS championship against McGill. The St. Thomas, Ont. native was also named an OUA first-team all-star and a first-team all-Canadian. Another crucial cog returning is fifth-year defenceman Katelyn Gosling (London, Ont.), fresh off of her appearance at the Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival held in Calgary, Alb. The hometown hero was one of 47 players to be invited to attend the camp, which is first step for players looking to earn a spot on Team Canada for the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship. “Katelyn has worked extremely hard at her development over the past year,” said Mustangs

head coach David Barrett. “Her commitment to off-ice strength and conditioning, in concert with her on-ice skill development and enhanced ability to read the game has resulted in this opportunity. As a team, we are very proud of her and have no doubt that she will excel at camp in Calgary.” Gosling undoubtedly absorbed the experience like a sponge, and will be looking to take what she learned and improve on last year’s impressive season, when she took home a slew of honours. The Social Science student-athlete was named an OUA first team all-star and CIS second team all-star after tallying four goals and 11 assists in 20 games. She was also named to the CIS all-tournament team following her performance at the national championship. The Mustangs also retain their major offensive weapon in fourth-year forward Kendra Broad (Petrolia, Ont.) who led the team in goals and assists last year. The firstteam OUA all-star rounds out the trio of first-teamers the Mustangs boasts, and returns for her final year of eligibility to take another run with the squad. So far this year the Mustangs are back to their dominant ways, taking home wins in four of their five preseason games, falling only to the University of Toronto in overtime. Western starts off their regular season with a rematch of the McCaw Cup as they head to Guelph, Ont. this Saturday to battle the Gryphons. Last year, Guelph fielded a strong squad that went 18-3-3 in the regular season, good for second in the conference standings. During the playoffs, the Gryphons won three of their five games in overtime as they knocked off the Ryerson Rams and University of Toronto Varsity Blues before falling 2-0 to Western in the McCaw Cup. Despite a hard loss, the Gryphons

still earned their first trip to the CIS national championship in 15 years. Guelph would suffer a tough firstround loss to the St. Francis Xavier X-Women before adding victories over the host Calgary Dinos as well as the Moncton Aigles Bleues to earn a 5th-place finish. “I’m so proud. It would have been so easy to just pack up shop after that loss, teams don’t lose games like that every day and you certainly don’t lose many of them in a national championship tournament,” said Gryphons head coach Scott McMillan. “A lot of teams would have taken that kick in the gut and not been able to bounce back and we bounced back. Not only did we win our last two games, we dominated our last two games…and it shows the type of character that they have in that room. I’m so proud because the knock on this group has been that they don’t respond well to challenges and the leadership group in there has turned this into a group that does respond to challenges.” Gryphon goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) returns for her last year at the University of Guelph after a staggering 2014 season. Nehring led all OUA goalies with a solid 1.18 GAA, while collecting five shutouts. Fellow fifth year senior and Oshawa native Jessica Pinkerton leads the way up front for the Gryphons and will share co-captain duties with Leigh Shilton (Belleville, ON) who can impact the game at both ends of the ice. McMillan’s squad will square up against their biggest challenge this season straight away as they host Western in a McCaw Cup rematch to open the 2015-16 season. Guelph will look to take what they learned from hard losses last year to try and turn the tables on the Mustangs. Regardless, fans can expect both of these teams to be leading the way in what is sure to be another incredible hockey season in OUA.

SEASON PREVIEW The Badgers have a fresh look behind the bench with former Olympic coach and Olympic Medalist Margot Page and former NCAA standout Sara Bauer taking over. Brock returns two of their top scorers from a year ago including senior captain Laura Neu (Ayr, Ont.) and second year Christina Ieradi (Maple, Ont.), who finished second in OUA rookie scoring in 2014-15. Also returning is fourth year Sophie Herbert (Ryde Isle of Wight, UK), a member of the United Kingdom National Team, and third year forwards Bronwyn O’Neill (Erinsville, Ont.), Melissa Hurrell (Caledon, Ont.), Brittany Gillmor (St George Brant, Ont.) and Heather Sorley (Niagara Falls, Ont.) Leading the Badgers blue line are fifth year Brittany Cabral (Hamilton, Ont.) and third year Erin McColm (Peterborough, Ont.). Key newcomers include Guelph Gryphons transfer Cara Sayles (Welland, Ont.), NCAA transfer Lisa Buratynski (Ajax, Ont. / Castleton Spartans), forward Amanda Ieradi (Stittsville, Ont. / Ottawa Lady Sens - PWHL) and goaltender Jensen Murphy (Kingston, Ont. / Kingston Ice Wolves PWHL). The Badgers lost three fifth year players, highlighted by all-time leading scorer Jessica Fickel. Fickel, who became the first player to have her jersey retired has signed a pro contract with Buffalo of the new NWHL. Also graduating are senior defensemen Ally Graham and Samantha Green.

SEASON PREVIEW The Gryphons Women’s Hockey team is poised to build on a successful 2014-15 season with a strong recruiting class and a lot of senior depth on their 2015-16 roster. After a 6 game exhibition season (vs McGill - W 3-0, vs Montreal - L 7-4, vs Laurier - W 2-1, vs Penn State - L 0-1, vs Boston College - 1-5, vs Boston U - L 0-3) the Gryphons will open up at home vs 2014-15 OUA/CIS Champions Western Mustangs. With both teams expected to fight for top spot in the OUA this season, it should be an exciting start to the season. Fans can expect to see more from 5th year centre and Co-Captain Jessica Pinkerton after an excellent summer of training and a newly defined leadership role. She will continue to skate with 4th year standout Christine Grant who is entering her final season as a Gryphon. Stephanie Nehring will want to have another outstanding season between the pipes to finish her career while also being asked to mentor 2nd year goalie Valerie Lamenta who is expected to push this year and eventually take over for Nehring next season as the teams’ #1. Also expect to see 3rd year D Jessica Pellegrino take on a leadership role with a very young D group.

“We have a strong character group who we feel will be able to build on last year’s success.” – Rachel Flanagan, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Laurentian Voyageurs women’s hockey team is looking to bounce back from their 2014-15 sophomore slump, as they aim for an improvement on their 3-21 record from a year ago. The Voyageurs return 13 players from their inaugural recruitment class, including key sophomore contributors Taylor Philip, Taylor Weber, Sara Habal and Ellery Veerman. Fifth-year defender Julie Hebert will also look to continue her offensive success as she led the Voyageurs with 12 points last year, while third-year forward Jessica Staats will shoot to improve on her 10 point performance from a year ago. The Voyageurs should have an exciting incoming class, highlighted by defender Brooklyn Davis of the Cambridge PWHL and forward Morgan McCann from the Bluewater PWHL. Goaltenders Emily Toffoli and Laura Deller will likely fight for that elusive starting role in net again, the duo accumulated a combined 674 saves in just 24 games last year. The Voyageurs have a pivotal season ahead of them with the bulk of their roster entering their third season of eligibility. “We are moving to a possession style of play with emphasis on execution, while maintaining the high tempo play we showed in year one of the program,” said head coach Stacey Colarossi. The Voyageurs begin their push for the post-season on October 3rd when they travel to North Bay to take on the Nipissing Lakers at 4pm.

“This is a pivotal season ahead with the bulk of our roster entering their third season. We are moving onto a possession style of play with emphasis on execution, while maintaining the high tempo play we showed from year one.” – Stacey Colarossi, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After an uncharacteristic season for the Golden Hawks, in which they finished sixth in the OUA standings during the regular season and were eliminated in the OUA Semifinals, Head Coach Rick Osborne has reloaded his roster as they look to return to the top of the conference. Nine new faces will don the purple and gold in 2015-16, joining a group of outstanding returning veterans. Three Golden Hawks will play their fifth and final year this season including last season’s leading scorer Jessie Hurrell, who averaged just over a point per game a year ago. Joining Hurrell are a pair of veteran blueliners in Blair Connelly and Haley Baxter. The two will serve as cocaptains this year and can influence the game in all three zones on the ice. At forward, the Hawks will be a group that possesses plenty of speed and offensive touch. Along with Hurrell, Laurier will also feature fourth year forward Robyn Degagne, third year forwards Dollee Meigs, Jessica Prevette and Heather Platt, along with a bevy of young talent. On the blueline, two-sport star Jacky Normandeau joins Baxter and Connelly as the returning veterans but they will have help in the form of Giuliana Pallotta, a transfer from NCAA D1 school Minnesota State. In goal, highly-touted recruit Lauren Webber from the PWHL’s Cambridge Rivulettes will challenge incumbents Amanda Smith and Nicholle Kovach for the number one spot between the pipes.

“We have reloaded for 2015-16 with a strong emphasis on being more defensively responsible. Rookie goalie Lauren Webber and NCAA transfer Giuliana Pallotta will provide added depth behind our blueline while up front Rebecca Haddaway, Madison MacCulloch and Kaitlin Hatzes will add skill and toughness in the faceoff circle. Solid veteran leadership starting with cocaptains Haley Baxter and Blair Connelly combined with nine new faces in our lineup will give our group a different look this year.” – Rick Osborne, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW In 2014-15, the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team took the first step in their climb to the ultimate goal – an OUA/CIS championship. The Lakers qualified for the playoffs in just their second season of existence and gave the eventual CIS champions, the Western Mustangs, all they could handle in the first round of the playoffs. Now, just making the playoffs isn’t enough, the Lakers plan on getting there and putting together an impressive run that will eventually culminate in a title. A strong recruiting class, plus a very impressive returning core have the Lakers poised to make some noise in the OUA. Lakers head coach Darren Turcotte said the team is heading in the right direction and now it’s about continuing on that path. “We feel that our program took a big step forward last season by making the playoffs in our second season,” he said. The Lakers were very strong in extra time, winning five times after the 60 minute mark, while suffering only a few losses. The season was highlighted by a five game winning streak in the month of November, as the Lakers took down Queens, Laurentian, York, Ryerson and Toronto. In that time, they only surrendered nine goals – less than two per game. Offensively, they showed their flare, scoring 18 times in that stretch. Nipissing ranked seventh in both goals for and goals against, finishing with a 12-93 record.

“Our returning players have helped establish a culture that revolves around work ethic and commitment, and we have confidence that our incoming players will comfortably fit into that culture. Our goal this year is to continue our upwards climb and continue to build a solid foundation for the future.”” – Darren Turcotte, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Queen’s women’s hockey team will begin their 2015-16 season on Friday October 9th with their home opener against the Brock Badgers. The Gaels are coming off of a regular season that saw them finish third in the OUA. They faced off against Laurier in the first round of the OUA playoffs where they lost in back to back games by a single goal, with one game ending in the third overtime, to be eliminated and end their season. The Gaels 2015-16 campaign outlook looks very strong this year after last season’s disappointing end. Queen’s will once again be led by Matt Holmberg who is entering his 10th year with the team, and seventh as Head Coach with an overall career season record of 102-3516. Accompanying Coach Holmberg on the bench this upcoming season will be Assistant Coach Miriam Paas and their two new additions Morgan McHaffie and Brooke Beazer. The Gaels 2015-16 lineup will welcome back OUA all-star Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) and last year’s OUA all-rookie team members Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) and Amber Sealey (Elora, Ont.). With a mix of some key veterans and last year’s strong rookie class, as well as the debut of some highly recruited players this year coming into the hockey program, the Gaels will be looking to add another OUA Championship to their title and advance to the CIS Championships this year held in Calgary.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season. With a nice blend of returning leaders and talented recruits we will continue to do our best to earn a spot among the top teams in the league. That will once again be a challenge though, as the OUA has reached a level of unparalleled parity. Every point will be hard fought, which means that our preparation and team chemistry must also reach new levels” – Matt Holmberg, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After making their first postseason appearance in program history, the Ryerson Rams are looking to build on the success and experience gained a year ago, and enter 2015-16 with high expectations. This year’s squad will be the most experienced as the program enters its fifth season, and now has players with four years under their belts. Leading the Rams this year will be forward Melissa Wronzberg and captain Jessica Hartwick who both enter the 2015-16 season with 100 regular season games played. Most of the Rams offence last year came from one forward line so Ryerson will be looking to spread the wealth a little more this season. Defensively the Rams return Hartwick and Stephanie Chiste and have added more depth with recruits Laura Ball and Rachel Dowdall on the blue line. Already with a strong goaltending tandem in Alex Armstrong and Ally Sarna, the Rams added Sydney Authier which makes the Rams crease a real strength heading into the season. Ryerson opens the season on October 8 against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:30 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

“This will be the most experienced of teams in our short history and we are hopeful to build off of our success from last season. We know the OUA is so competitive and even qualifying for the playoffs each year is an accomplishment. We expect our team to be sound defensively and want to generate more offence than last season.” – Lisa Haley, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Three-time Olympian Vicky Sunohara boasts the largest recruiting class in her five seasons as head coach, as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team begins their quest for the OUA title on Thursday, October 8th at Ryerson. With over half of her players in eligibility year two or less, Sunohara looks forward to seeing how her strong group of veterans lead and mold this young team.

“We proved last year that we can compete with the country’s best. Our season-ending loss is still really difficult to think about but I think it provides the motivation to pick up where we left off last year,” said Sunohara. “I think we’re a well-rounded team this season and our new players have really stepped in and made an impact so far.” Despite the loss of two-time OUA allstar and 2014 CIS all-Canadian goaltender Nicole Kesteris, the Blues are confident in their trio between the pipes. Third-year netminder Katey Teekasingh, who boasted a .912 save percentage in six games last season, will be relied on to help newcomers Hailey Farrelly and Valencia Yordanov make the jump to OUA-calibre hockey. Fourth-year forward Kristi Riseley, who led the Blues with 20 points last season, has been named the captain of the squad for 2015-16. She will look to fellow veterans Sonja Weidenfelder, who ranked second on the team with nine goals and nine assists in 2014-15, as well as Taylor Day and Jacqueline Scheffel to lead U of T’s offence this year. The Blues defence returns fifth-year veterans April Looije and Caitlin Maikawa. The duo helped the Blues achieve a 1.75 goals against average over 24 games last season. Third-year defencemen Autumn Garnham and Rebecca Bourgeois, as well as Julia Szulewska are also back and welcome rookies Kennedy Kneller and Cristine Chao this season.

SEASON PREVIEW Although the Ridgebacks have 20 returnees to their lineup, the team will have a different look heading into the season as Justin Caruana has taken over the head coaching duties from Karen Nystrom. After qualifying for the playoffs in back-toback seasons, UOIT took a step backwards in 2015 missing out on the playoffs with a 7-15-2 record. A big part of the letdown was the Ridgebacks suffering a nine-game losing streak, and fans are hoping Caruana can bring a consistent effort and results to the team. Chelsea Ball (Brampton, Ont.) tied the Ridgebacks scoring title during her freshman campaign, scoring a team high eight goals and three assists while Nicole LoPresti (Hamilton, Ont.) had five goals and six assists. Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) had a strong finish to her year ending up with four goals and six assists. UOIT goaltenders Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) have proven that they are one of the best tandems in the league giving the Ridgebacks a chance to win every night. With the departure of Melissa Berney and Stephanie Spencer from the blueline, Caruana will look to freshmen Erin Hunt and Gabriella Lamanna to fill the void. With the new attitude of the team, UOIT fans have high hopes that OUA postseason play will be back at the Campus Ice Centre in March.

“I’m really looking forward to start my first year as head coach. We are expecting some growing pains this year, as it is a transitional period but that being said we look to be a fast, hard working team that isn’t going to take a night off. Teams will know when they come to play the Ridgebacks it won’t be an easy game.” – Justin Caruana, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW If there was ever a time for a breakout year for the Waterloo women’s hockey team, 2015-16 would be the season The Warriors have their deepest line-up since they broke into the league in 2002, with the return of key veterans and highly touted recruits. In net, the Warriors look to have a stellar one-two punch with Stephanie Sluys and Rebecca Bouwhuis who have both been OUA rookies of the year in their respective freshman campaigns. Last season Sluys earned that honour after an impressive season where she posted seven shutouts in only 14 starts, leading the nation in that category. Sluys had a 1.68 goals against average and .933 save percentage, the fourth-best in the province in both of those categories. Up front the Warriors will rely on captain Kaitlyn McDonell to play a leadership role while playing on the top line and key special team minutes while Rachel Marriott (who was also an OUA rookie of the year in 2014) will be looked at for her goal scoring ability. New additions Paula LaGamba, Alyssa Gee and Alison Hanson will add to Waterloo’s dynamic offence. LaGamba transfers from Laurier for her final year of eligibility after scoring 29 goals and 61 points in 104 career games with the Golden Hawks. Gee (Durham West Lightning) and Hanson (Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins) both led their respective teams in scoring last season and should have no problems transitioning to the OUA game. Defensively Michelle Tanel returns from injury and will be expected to log big time ice minutes alongside Stephanie Digness who was a member of the CIS all-rookie team in her first season in 2013. Rookie, Abby Dortmans will be a key addition to the blue line with her imposing presence and puck moving ability.

“As a coaching staff we are very optimistic about the season ahead. We have a strong group of veterans returning, with a very impressive group of recruits to compliment them. We have a very deep roster this season and I expect to compete with the best teams across the OUA on a game by game basis” – Shaun Regan, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Fresh off of winning the first ever OUA and CIS Championship titles in program history, the Western Mustangs women’s hockey team will look to repeat that success when they open their regular season schedule on October 3 on the road against the Guelph Gryphons. The current, reigning, and defending OUA and CIS Champions should once again be a force to be reckoned with as they return the majority of their championship roster, including CIS all-Canadians Kelly Campbell and Katelyn Gosling, along with OUA allstars Kendra Broad and Brianna Iazzolino. Overall 17 members of last year’s squad will once again don the purple and white as they attempt to defend their provincial and national titles. David Barrett, last year’s OUA and CIS Coach of the Year alongside Chris Higgins, will be behind the bench again this season as the team’s head coach. Although a large portion of the roster has returned that doesn’t mean the Mustangs were quiet on the recruiting trail as 12 new players will join the team for 2015-16. Led by transfers Lyndsay Kirkham and Amanda Pereira, the newest additions to the roster will look to make an impact on a veteran Western squad. This year’s recruiting class stretches from coast-to-coast, with players joining from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. With a good mix of established veterans and impressive newcomers the Mustangs will be expected to once again contend for the OUA title as they look to make a little more history and become the first Western team to win back-to-back championships.

“Our team is excited about the prospect of defending our championship this season. We recognize how fortunate we were to end the season victorious given the level of competition in the OUA, but we are confident that we will be in the hunt again come playoff time.” – David Barrett, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Windsor Lancers women’s hockey team is coming off a solid 2014-15 season that saw them earn a sixth straight berth into the OUA post season. The 2015-16 edition of the Blue & Gold are a young squad after losing a number of key veterans to graduation. The loss of fifth year forwards Jenny MacKnight, Candice Chevalier, Bree Polci, Candace Kourounis, and defenseman Kayla Dodson brings the opportunity for others to step up and shine. On offense, fourth year forward Erinn Noseworthy has been named this year’s team captain and will be looked at to provide a scoring punch on the Lancer front line. Noseworthy, along with fourth year forward Jillian Rops, provide an unmatched commitment to winning and a wealth of experience that will help lead the Lancers back into the post season for the seventh straight season. Two sport athlete and OUA allrookie Krystin Lawrence will also be counted on to lead the Lancer offense. Lawrence led the Lancers in scoring in 2014-15 with 22 points (11G, 11A) in 23 games. Defensively, head coach Jim Hunter will rely on transfer Sydney Dobbin. A 5’8 defenseman from London Ontario, Dobbin joins the Lancers after spending the past two seasons with Adrian College in Michigan. She registered 10 points in 29 career games with the Bulldogs.

“We are a young team and I think it is going to be an exciting season. We have some great potential, so we will just have to see how fast we kick things into gear.” – Jim Hunter, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The York University Lions women’s hockey team made a big jump in the OUA last season and is looking for more of the same this year as the squad eyes getting back into the post-season. Last year’s team made significant improvements at both ends of the ice, scoring seven more goals and allowing 21 fewer in the regular season that resulted in an additional five wins and 11 points in the OUA standings. However, they still finished two points out of the playoffs and want to take the next step this year and qualify for the playoffs.

“We want to finish in the top half; that’s a big step forward for this group,” said head coach Dan Church. “To be in the top half in the OUA gives you a chance to win and that’s where we want to be. To get there, we need to do well against the top teams and take points off them, and also do our job against teams we want to beat out in the playoffs. It’s a big task because the OUA is so strong, but it comes down to bringing a consistent style of play and outworking our opponents.” The back end is where the Lions will benefit most from experience, with goaltender Megan Lee and defender Kristen Barbara anchoring a defensive unit that will make it difficult for opponents to score. Lee, the team captain, was a workhorse last year, leading the OUA in total minutes played (1448:47) and total saves (616). Compared to the previous year, she also lowered her goals against average by more than one goal per game. Barbara is coming off a season in which she was named a CIS all-Canadian for the first time, becoming just the fifth member of the program to earn the honour, and she led all OUA defenders in goals (seven), assists (13) and points (20). Expectations are high this season, but if the Lions can continue to improve the way they did last year, their goals are well within reach.
