Season Preview The Brock men’s hockey team has a strong core group of returnees and a talented recruiting class which bodes well for the 2016-17 season. The Badgers return their top three scorers from a year ago in 2nd Team OUA All-Star Chris Maniccia (8G,20A, 28PTS), Mitch Nardi (11G, 10A, 21PTS) and Sammy Banga (6G, 13A, 19PTS). Nardi will miss part of the season due to injury. Skylar Pacheco, who was named the Badgers top Defensemen and Rookie of the Year in 2015-16, (5G, 12A, 17PTS) returns for his second season, along with Jeff Corbett (2G, 4A, 6PTS), Evan Morden (1G, 2A, 3PTS) and Patrick Volpe (1G). Andrew Radjenovic returns to the Badgers lineup after one year off and will dawn the “C”. He was the Badgers leading scorer in 2014-15. Top newcomers include forward Matt MacLeod (St. Thomas University - AUS), defenseman Dexter Weber (Charlottetown Islanders - QMJHL) and goaltender Adam Beukeboom (Portage College - ACAC). In goal, Clint Windsor returns for his third season. New goaltenders include Beukeboom and Alex Brooks-Potts.

“We return our top players from a year ago and have a strong group of newcomers. This season, the keys to our success will be our main guys putting up numbers and the top newcomers providing an offensive spark from the start. We also focused on our back end and added some key newcomers to make our blue line and goaltending stronger.” – Murray Nystrom, Head Coach

Season Preview An OUA bronze medal and a berth at the CIS University Cup were great accomplishments for a highly talented Ravens men’s hockey team that took to the ice in 2015-16. After many years of frustrating playoff exits to McGill, Carleton finally exacted some revenge in last year’s OUA East semifinal series when they eliminated the Redmen from the postseason for the very first time. However, the fleeting euphoria quickly turned to disappointment as the Ravens gave their own postseason bow following an overwhelming two-game sweep by the UQTR Patriotes, leaving Carleton short of its quest for an OUA banner. The Ravens have their work cut out this season as they replace several key components of last year’s team, including team captain Joey West, talented winger Mitch Zion and the dynamic goaltending tandem of Patrick Killeen and Francis Dupuis. Most teams battling with those major personnel losses would be in rebuilding mode, but the Ravens have reloaded the lineup with a handful of exciting and dynamic players including Mississauga Steelheads captain Josh Burnside, Memorial Cup participant Justin Nichols, NHL draft pick Francois Brassard and local Ottawa 67’s product Evan de Haan. CIS Rookie of the Year Brett Welychka, OUA All-Star Mike McNamee and goal-poacher Ryan Van Stralen form the most prolific forward line in Canadian university hockey, as Carleton will rely on the skilled trio to lead them throughout the 2016-17 campaign. The Ravens are excited and optimistic about another opportunity to get back to the University Cup, but they know a difficult road lies ahead. Carleton has its hands full in a deep OUA East division, but with one more year of experience under its belt, this could be the season where the Ravens finally capture a long-awaited conference title.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season. We will have a strong group of returning forwards led by Mike McNamee, Brett Welychka and Ryan Van Stralen. We play in an extremely strong conference and we will be tested on a nightly basis. We hope to improve as the season progresses to be at our best come playoff time.” – Marty Johnston, Head Coach

Season Preview After serving as the interim head coach last season, Marc-André Élement was handed the reins on May 20, 2016 and can now build the Concordia Stingers to his standards. Élement was driven and dedicated during his five years (2006-11) as a forward with the Stingers and he expects to see those traits in this team. “We’re going to be hard working,” he said. “We’re going to be young, but talented. We are fast and we will play fast.” Captain and 2015 Randy Gregg award winner Olivier Hinse will be back with the Stingers for his fifth season. In addition to his leadership, the three-time OUA all-star will be relied on to continue racking up points. In 28 games last year, he scored 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points. His 18 goals ranked him seventh in CIS. The Stingers return several top scorers from 2015-16, including Hinse, Scott Oke, Philippe Hudon and Domenic Beauchemin. Élement says the biggest area of improvement will be in the Stingers’ end of the rink. Concordia will be young but more stable. There’s a lot of talk about the addition of goaltender Philippe Cadorette. In five seasons with the Baie Comeau Drakkar and the Shawinigan Cataractes, Cadorette set 13 QMJHL records in the regular season and playoffs. He also owns an incredible 107 franchise records at the junior level.

“This season we are taking a step forward, a step towards building a strong foundation for the future. Hopefully we surprise a few people.” – Marc-André Element, Head Coach

Season Preview After falling one win shy of qualifying for nationals for what would have been a second straight season, the Gryphons now enter the 2016-17 OUA hockey season with several key returning players who were part of the Gryphons conference championship team two seasons ago. Former Belleville Bulls standout Scott Simmonds has been named the team’s new captain, while Scott Stajcer, a former 5th round pick of the New York Rangers in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, takes over in net as the Gryphons new number one goalie.

“This year’s squad will have a bit of a different look as we had a significant turnover from last season with seven of our guys turning pro. We have a hard working group and will rely on a balanced attack to once again compete with the top programs in what is a tough OUA West Division.” – Shawn Camp, Head Coach

Season Preview The Lakehead Thunderwolves dropped their first 11 games of the season and had just two victories by the time the Christmas break rolled around. When all was said and done, they finished with an 8-16-4 mark and were on the outside looking in when the OUA postseason arrived. Missing the playoffs was a first since Thunderwolves rejoined the university hockey ranks in 2001, a feat the fourth-year coach hopes to erase with a triumphant return in 2016-17. It’ll start in the back end, where the team was the third-worst in the league last season, only Concordia and RMC allowing more goals per game. Dillon Donnelly, a former Colorado Avalanche draft pick, and Patrick Murphy, who scored 13 goals last season with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves, are McDonald’s prize recruits. Both are expected to meld into a blue-line that returns the likes of Justin Sefton, Jake Ringuette, Linden Springer, Tyler Anton and Matt Alexander. The duo will be asked to fill holes left by the departures of former captain Luke Maw and rugged defenceman Jay Gilbert. “I think we’ve got a pretty solid defensive unit,” McDonald said. “And we were quite happy with (goalie) Devin Green last year. So if we do have a strong suit, it’s probably our back end.” Sefton, a one-time draft pick of the San Jose Sharks, agreed, though admitted it will take both forwards and defencemen alike some time to get used to the new style. “It’s more of a run-and-gun than a standback-and-watch like last year,” Sefton said. “But once we get the exhibition games started it’ll be a lot easier to not think about other stuff. And with this new (dressing) room, it’s kind of easy to erase everything at this point.” Up front, the Thunderwolves will be looking for continued production from forwards Cody Alcock, Billy Jenkins, Kelin Ainsworth and Carson Dubchak.

“We know that last year was not our best, but we feel this year we will see some renewed success for the team.” – Bill McDonald, Head Coach

Season Preview The Laurentian Voyageurs are looking to get back to their 2014-15 form when they cracked the top four in the Eastern Conference. Such an improvement will rely on two veteran goalies; Charlie Millen and Joel Vienneau look to fill the void left by the graduation of Alain Valiquette. They are teamed up with freshman, Gunner Rivers. On the blue line the team is rich with experience with veteran defensemen; Nicolas Thommen, Elliott Richardson, Tyler Shaw, Andrew Tessier, along with captain Vincent Llorca. This core is joined by sophomore blue liners Jayme Forslund, Kaden Ruest, David Chiarelli and first year addition Scott Pedersen. In order to make the strides they are pushing for, the team will look to an experienced line-up on the front end to light the lamp more than often than they did last season. The offense is going to rely heavily on such veterans as Nick Esposto, Dylan Fitze and Nicolas Dionne, as well as sophomores Brent Pedersen and Jacob Smith. The line up looks to be enhanced and rounded out with the competitive play of returnees Brad MacDonald, Blake Forslund, Graham Yeo, Richard Therrien, Darcy Haines, and Chris Smith. Caleb Apperson has moved up front and threatens to be a force along with newcomers François Côté, Blake Luscombe, and Derek Varrin. Training camp surprises that have shown potential to jump up and fill a role include Cray Roberge and Ryan Wildman. This squad are looking to excel under 4th year Head Coach Craig Duncanson who is joined by returning coach, Kerry MacLennan, who will manage the defensive end of the bench. Kerry and Craig will be joined by former player, Michael MacDonald, to complete this season’s coaching staff. In all, the team looks to be an upbeat, hardworking squad each and every night.

“The injury bug bit us hard last year, making for a difficult and disappointing season. We are returning a number of key pieces and have increased our depth this year as we look to get back to our form from two seasons ago.” – Craig Duncanson, Head Coach

Season Preview Following a tough end to their 2015-16 season in which the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks bowed out of the OUA playoffs in two games at the hands of their bitter rivals, the Western Mustangs, optimism surrounds the purple and gold heading into 2016-17 thanks to a strong recruiting class and a deep group of returning athletes. Determined to increase the talent level on the ice, head coach Greg Puhalski brought in a group of 11 recruits, five of which possess major junior playing experience, to bolster his team. Included in the 11 players is St. Thomas University transfer Andrew Fritsch, a local product from Brantford, Ont., who has two years of CIS experience under his belt along with his time in the OHL with the Niagara IceDogs, Owen Sound Attack and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Joining Fritsch as fresh faces on the purple and gold are Brandon Robinson, who most recently suited up for the Kitchener Rangers, as well as Braydon Blight, formerly of Kingston (OHL) and Saint John (QMJHL), Alex Annecchiarico (Owen Sound - OHL) and Lucas Batt (Victoriaville, Moncton and Quebec - QMJHL). All five players promise to have a big impact with the Hawks this season and will feature prominently in their lineup. While the new faces bring excitement to the team, the Hawks also have a strong core returning, centred around fifth year forward Derek Schoenmakers. Schoenmakers is coming off a great year in which he scored 17 goals, tied for sixth overall in the OUA, and finished the year with 24 points. Other impact players returning for Laurier included defenceman Matt Franczyk and Mac Clutsam, a member of the OUA West All-Rookie team last season, and forwards Will Cook, Kyle Morrison, Christian Mroczkowski and Erik Pushka. Perhaps Laurier’s most important returning player though may be goaltender Chris Festarini. The former Erie Otters and Niagara IceDogs netminder returns to the purple and gold after sitting out all of the 2015-16 season due to injury. His addition is an instant boost to the Golden Hawks crease which also includes returning veterans Vinny Merante and Colin Furlong. With Festarini back in the fold, the Hawks deepest position for the season is most assuredly in goal.

““We have lofty goals for our season and we feel good about the group of young men we have donning the purple and gold for 201617.” – Greg Puhalski, Head Coach

Season Preview The McGill Redmen are in their 141st season of hockey and coming off a 216-1 second-place finish in the OUA East Division. Despite losing five key players from last year’s roster, the team features a balanced lineup with seven freshmen, 10 sophomores, four juniors and six seniors. Nineteen players are products of the QMJHL and four others have skated in the OHL. Last year, McGill had the highestscoring blueline in the nation with 31 goals but they’ve about lost half of them with the graduation of Sam Labrecque, who led all CIS rearguards with 16, a McGill singleseason record for defencemen. That said, high-scoring blueliner Dominic Talbot-Tassi and centre Mathieu Pompei are back to lead a hard-working squad. Pompei tallied 19 goals and 18 assists in 28 league games, while Talbot-Tassi posted a stellar 11-27-38 record from the blueline as a freshman. Other leading point producers include sophomore Daniel Milne (14-1428), team captain Patrick Delisle-Houde (711-18) and sophomore Christophe Lalonde, who joined the squad midway through last season after a tryout with the Detroit Red Wings and posted a 5-5-10 record in 10 games.

“We’ve got a good young team with lots of potential. We added some much-needed size and depth and have a veteran corps at the back end. We implemented a very challenging preseason schedule and that was all about providing adversity and building our identity.” – Kelly Nobes, Head Coach

Season Preview The Nipissing Lakers are looking at climbing in the standings of the tough OUA East Division. After playing last season to 28 points in 28 games the Lakers would like to cross the 30 point plateau this season. With plenty of 3rd year players returning, the onus will be on them to take a big step to push Nipissing into that top 4 echelon. With veteran goalie Kirk Rafuse graduating the Lakers are hoping that Dominic Graham will be able to move into the number one position and show that he is capable of grabbing the number 1 rung. Up front Erik Robichaud and Colin Campbell will be expected to lead the offense, as well as first year player Dan Desrochers who finished up his over age year in Sudbury last season. On defense Jim McDowell will be looked upon to regain his rookie form after missing over half the season with injury. Leadership void created by the graduation of Dane Horvat will have to be filled by 4th year players Brendan Mitchell, Robichaud, McDowell and Mitch McNeill. Coach Mike McParland believes his team is better and is pushing for more offense, as that was the teams Achilles heel last season.

“We have reloaded our roster with some skilled players, but also some players that will be able to fill in certain roles. We’re happy with the way our lineup is looking and while we want to continue our streak of playoff appearances, we also want to take the next step and put together a postseason run.” – Mike McParland, Head Coach

Season Preview With 25 new players on the roster, how will this team stack up? Early signs are good as Ottawa took McGill to a shoot out and defeated UQTR in its first two outings of 2016-17. Several of the Gee-Gees have played together before with six team mates coming from three different prior teams. Head coach Patrick Grandmaître was hired in July of 2015 and recruited 21 players before added five at an open tryout in September. Grandmaître has plenty of firepower with leading scorers from the OJHL and MJAHL alongside five recruits coming from either the OHL or QMJHL. Two players attended NHL development camps this summer: Jacob Sweeney worked out with Vancouver while Anthony Brodeur attended the Maple Leafs camp.

“In our exhibition games we played some very good programs and that showed us we’ll be able to push teams. I think we’ll compete day in and day out. Our work ethic is definitely going to be there, and I think we’ll be surprising a lot of people.” – Patrick Grandmaître, Head Coach

Season Preview With a veteran squad returning to the ice for the Gaels they will look to push themselves to the top of the OUA East this season and secure home ice for the playoffs, something that has hindered Queen’s in the last few years. The Gaels will be led once again by goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) who returns for his fourth year with the Gaels and is expected to be one of the top players in all of the CIS. Defensively, Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) who is fresh off an NHL tryout with the Florida Panthers is joined by Captain Patrick Downe (New Maryland, N.B.) to anchor the blue line again. On offence a strong core of Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.), Darcy Greenaway (Odessa, Ont.), Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) will be aided by newcomers Dylan Anderson (Greely, Ont.), Brock Edwards (Kingston, Ont.), Luke Bertolucci (Montrose, B.C.) and Frankie Vilardi (Kingston, Ont.). The Queen’s Cup is the ultimate goal and the Gaels hope to bring the trophy named after their school home for the first time since 1981.

“I am excited to see what this group of guys is capable of doing. We now have a group that has played together for a couple of years and have added some very nice pieces to compete in a very difficult OUA East Conference. We will need to find ways to manufacture more goals in order to keep up with the best in the conference but I look forward to watching the development of some of my older guys now in their 3rd and 4th years.” – Brett Gibson, Head Coach

Season Preview RMC will be tested right from the start of their 2016-17 season, as they open at home against McGill, followed by a road game at Carleton the following evening. The Paladins will look to get off to a strong start and find a way to earn points every weekend with their tireless work ethic. Last season, RMC was involved in twelve games decide by 2 goals or less. RMC will make their way to West Point, NY on January 21st to face the United States Military Academy in the 81st installment of their historic series, while on this side of the border the 31st Annual Carr-Harris Cup game will be played on February 2nd at the K-Rock Center in Kingston, ON.

“Last year was a positive step forward for the program. We lost 3 character players in Scott Domenico, Matthew Beirnes and Eric LouisSeize, but we have added some talent and, more importantly, some great people to the roster this year. I don’t think we will catch anyone off guard with our competitiveness, so we will have to earn every point. That being said, with the veteran group we have in the room, the team expects to be making a push for playoffs for the first time in recent memory.” – Richard Lim, Head Coach

Season Preview The Ryerson Rams enter a new era this season with long-term head coach Graham Wise retiring, Johnny Duco taking over on an interim basis, and Kori Cheverie joining the squad as the first female full-time assistant in the CIS. The roster hasn’t just changed on the bench, either, as ten new faces have joined the squad. Combine that with a 12-player recruiting class a season ago and the Rams boast a fairly young team. Captain Michael Fine is the lone fifth year player this season but the Rams have a good leadership core which extends to Alex Basso, Aaron Armstrong, and fourth years Lucas Froese and Daniel Clairmont. Last season the Rams finished sixth in the OUA West division during the regular season with a 14-13-1 record. Ryerson found success in the playoffs, bouncing the third-seeded Waterloo Warriors in the first round. The Rams then challenged the defending OUA champion Guelph Gryphons before losing in three games. This year’s group is looking to build off that success a season ago and put together a run deep into the postseason. The season begins October 6 when the Rams host the Laurier Golden Hawks.

“We need to be leaders in the community, classroom, and on the ice. I like the make-up of our team and feel that if we do things the right way we will have long term success.” – Johnny Duco, Head Coach

Season Preview The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team features a young 2016-17 roster, with over half of the squad in their first or second seasons with the team. The Blues are coming off an impressive post-season run last year. Heading into the playoffs as the eighth seed, U of T upset the top-ranked York Lions in the first round and took the No. 2 seeded Western Mustangs to overtime in Game 3. Toronto returns fourth-year netminder Andrew Hunt, who ended 2015-16 as the team’s starter. Hunt boasted an impressive .922 save percentage through 15 regular season games. Back to lead Toronto’s defence is fourth-year veteran Charlie Connell. He, along with Corey Jackson and Aidan Wallace, will look to steer Toronto’s defensive corps. The Blues graduated leading scorers and 2015-16 OUA all-stars Christian Finch and Patrick Marsh and will rely on second-year standout Mathew Campagna to lead the charge. Campagna notched 10 goals and 18 assists in 28 regular season games last year. The Blues also return veteran forwards Connor Cleverley and Dean Klomp, as well as second-year forward Max Lindsay to bolster their offence.

“Last year we had a great second half. A lot of our younger players were contributors during our playoff run and they are back this year so i think we are starting off on the right foot.” – Darren Lowe, Head Coach

Season Preview Fans at the Campus Ice Centre are hoping that the 10th year of UOIT hockey is another record setting year for the program. In his first season behind the bench, Curtis Hodgins led the Ridgebacks to their most regular season victories (18) and firstever playoff series win (2-1 over Queen’s). With key recruits like Kyle Locke, Anthony Latina and Tyson Teichmann, Hodgins has added depth starting from the crease out as UOIT hopes to surpass their success from last season. Up front the Ridgebacks have lost two of their top goal scorers from 2015-16 as fiveyear athletes Jesse Stoughton and James Woodcroft graduated from the program in April, leaving opportunities for new and returning players to step up offensively for UOIT.

“We are looking to keep building on the momentum that the program created last season. There are simply no easy games in this league and our team will need to step another step forward this season if we want to compete in the OUA East. I believe our team is much quicker than last season and we hope to use that to our advantage in terms of how we play. I really like the group we have assembled here and look forward to beginning the real games.” – Curtis Hodgkins, Head Coach

Season Preview “We recognize that expectations are high. Our core is mature and key players are back. Our aim is to play a good season and step into playoffs well prepared. With all these elements that fall into place, our goal is clear: win the Canadian championship. To win, we will have to stay healthy and focus our energy on how to get there, not on the outcome. We had a good 201516 campaign with a lot of individual and collective success. With six new players bringing depth to our roster, we believe that the 2016-17 campaign is going to be equally as exciting, if not more.” – Marc-Étienne Hubert, Head Coach

Season Preview There might be some new names on the back of the jerseys this season, but the crest on the front – and the identity behind it – is still the same. Despite the graduation of a number of leaders and all-stars, the team has reloaded with their trademark work ethic and character – the same traits that have paced the black and gold to 12 straight seasons without a losing record. Waterloo said goodbye to reigning OUA West division MVP Colin Behenna, as well as forwards Chris Chappell, Andrew Smith, and Brett Mackie. But Bourque says that, while his team might have less pure offense this year, the depth among forwards will be key – as will balanced contributions from veterans and youngsters alike. Riley Sonnenburg returns for his fifth year, coming off 13 goals in 28 games a year ago, and second-year centre Joey Champigny is ready to pick up where he left off – he notched 12 points in his final 13 games as a rookie in 2015-16. Among the impressive forward recruits joining the Warriors this year are forwards Nick Halagian, Cole Murphy, Michael Morgan, Michael Siddall, Kenny Turner, and Zac Coulter. The six new faces up front combined for 138 goals and 309 points in 279 games for their respective Jr. A and Jr. B clubs last season. While the youth movement is in full effect up front, the Warriors have an embarrassment of riches on defence. Despite losing four-time all-star and captain Joe Underwood, Waterloo boasts one of the most experienced and skilled blue lines in the CIS. Mike Moffat returns for his third season, coming off his first OUA all-star selection. Stephen Silas scored 28 points in 28 games, and veteran Cam Wind will once again make life miserable for opposing forwards. The Warriors also made two additions on the back end, adding Nik Knezic, formerly of the Niagara Ice Dogs, and versatile defenceman Eric Diodati from St. Thomas University and the Windsor Spitfires. The Warriors will benefit from a pair of familiar faces in the crease for 2016-17. Mike Morrison enters his fourth season with a career 33-23 record and .907 save percentage, while backup Chris Hurry has posted a career .908 save percentage in 15 games over the past two seasons. the program’s first-ever full-time associate coach in Nathan Hewitt.

“Our depth and character is among the highest we’ve ever had in my 12 years here. In a division as tight as ours, you never know what that work ethic can do.” – Brian Bourque, Head Coach

Season Preview The Mustangs began last season by dominating early, picking up five straight wins, and despite cooling off around the New Year, they bounced back just in time for a boost before playoffs en route to an OUA Silver Medal and a spot in the CIS University Cup for the first time since 2011. However, a quarterfinal elimination at the hands of the UNB Varsity Reds ended the campaign for a banner. Despite the team fielding heavy losses with the departures of David Corrente, Shaun Furlong, Stephen Gaskin, Noah Schwartz, and Alex Micallef, a strong core remains – headlined by starting goaltender Greg Dodds, point leader Matt Marantz, and rookie standout Andrew Goldberg. Joining the veterans on the ice is an impressive rookie class featuring goaltender Lucas Peressini, forwards Mitchell Fitzmorris and Mitchell Brooks, and three defensemen in Austin Adam, Rylan Bechtel, and Ryan Ball.

“We lost five senior defencemen from last year, so we’ll be young on the blue line but hopefully we can count on our veteran forwards and goaltender to lead the way until they get some experience at this level.” – Clarke Singer, Head Coach, about the impact the incoming class can be expected to have on the ice

Season Preview The 2016-17 Windsor Lancer men’s hockey team is set to make another run for the Queen’s Cup title and a third appearance at the CIS University Cup Championship. After claiming their first Queen’s Cup Championship in 16 years in 2013-14, the Lancers have continued to make strides towards their first CIS Championship title. The outlook for 2016-17 is a positive one for the Lancers, as they are returning a number of key players from last year’s squad, including OUA west division rookie of the year Justice Dundas. Last season, Dundas led the Lancers’ second best offence in the West Division (3.61 goals per game) in goals (14) and points (29). The Lancers will not be without a couple of significant losses this year, as captain and former CIS all-Canadian Kenny Bradford, along with forwards Ryan Green and Eric Noel graduated following last season. Defenseman Paul Bezzo also completed his education, leaving a hole at the back of the line-up. Kevin Hamlin hopes to begin filling those voids with his 2016-17 recruiting class, a group with a lot of skill that will be able to contribute right away. The group includes goaltender Paolo Battisti, a local product who joins the Lancers from the GOJHL’s LaSalle Vipers, and Todd Ratchford from the Caledonia Corvairs of the GOJHL. Another standout addition, Chadd Bauman, is a tremendous defenseman who can play in all situations, and joins the Lancers from the OHL’s Guelph Storm.

“We are looking forward to seeing the further development of our personnel. We are optimistic that the players from last year have come a long way and will at some point reach their full potential. We have a tremendous group this year being led by a great leadership group. Our captains have national tournaments, Queen’s Cup championships, and a lot of experience among them to offer this young team.” – Kevin Hamlin, Head Coach

Season Preview One year has made a huge difference for the York University Lions men’s hockey team and expectations have changed significantly thanks to a worst-to-first turnaround one season ago. Last year the Lions had something to prove after a last-place finish in the OUA West the previous season. Rookie head coach Chris Dennis took over the helm of the program in the off-season and the results were immediate: the Lions won six of their first eight games and earned points in 10 of their first 11 en route to a firstplace finish in the OUA West Division standings and five weeks in the CIS national rankings. However, the season ended sooner than expected with a game-three loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues in the first round of the playoffs and this year’s team is using that disappointment as motivation to stay at the top and position themselves for a deep post-season run. The Lions lost some veteran experience in the off-season but return eight of their top 10 scorers, including OUA West all-stars Derek Sheppard and Trevor Petersen, who were first and second, respectively, in team scoring and both ranked among the OUA’s top 20. Peterson leads an offensive attack that also includes third-year forward Greg Milner, while Sheppard anchors a blueline alongside veterans Tyler Mort and Shayne Rover. The biggest change will be between the pipes, where a new starter will emerge after the graduation of OUA West all-star goaltender Chris Perugini. The battle will be between incoming rookies Mack Shields and Alex Fotinos, who each bring four years of major junior experience from the Canadian Hockey League, and returning back-up Mitch Maraschiello.

“The players decided they wanted to be a team that was difficult to play against. They wanted to learn our system and embrace it, and it was all their effort and dedication to the team that was the reason for the turnaround. The season didn’t end the way we wanted, in a best two-out-of-three anything can happen and we found that out. We played well enough to win and it didn’t go our way. We learned a lot from that and I think we will be better because of it.” – Chris Dennis, Head Coach

Season Preview The defending McCaw Cup champions will have a drastically different look to them in 2016-17 than they did a season ago. Although several key players have graduated from last year’s team, several key players return, headlined of course by the reigning CIS Player of the Year in goalie Valerie Lamenta. Lamenta returns for her third season at U of G and will look to lead the way once again after becoming the first Gryphon ever to take home the Brodrick Trophy. Katherine Bailey is the leader on the Gryphons blueline while Kelly Gribbons, Kaitlin Lowy and Brittany St. James spearhead the U of G attack up front.

“Rebuild to repeat. That is the slogan our players have come up with for this season. Obviously with 10 rookies and several key players moving on, the make-up of our team is a lot different than last year’s. But we’re still really happy with the core of our group and are looking forward to trying to defend our OUA title in 2016-17.” – Rachel Flanagan, Head Coach

Season Preview After venturing into the playoffs for the first-time ever, in the 2015-16 season, the Laurentian Voyageurs women’s hockey team will look to carry that momentum forward into 2016-17. The Voyageurs proved they were an OUA threat last season as they jumped from twelfth to eighth in the division, besting a 3-21 record the previous year to an 11-13 regular season finish. The squad will look to catapult themselves deeper into the mix as they shoot for a top-half finish in the division this year. Head coach, Stacey Colarossi, hopes to build off last year’s growth and the team’s first playoff appearance by further developing at both ends of the ice. “We want to continue to be a 60-minute team that contributes all over the ice by committee,” adds Colarossi. The Voyageurs ranked second in the OUA in shots on goal (735) and shots per game (30.6) in 2015-16 and will look to put a few more into the back of the net this year. With the loss of Voyageurs standout, Julie Hebert and the strong post-season play of backstop Emily Toffoli, the Voyageurs will rely on a veteran returning class and some key incoming players as they shoot for another appearance in the post-season. Leading a strong returning class is newly appointed captain, Ellery Veerman. The thirdyear forward played all 24 games for the Voyageurs last year, finishing second on the squad with 11 points, including the gamewinning goal in their first-ever playoff victory over the Gryphons in game two of their firstround series. On the defensive end, the Voyageurs return veteran, Sara Habal who provides stability for the Voyageurs in the back. Habal played all 24 games last season, chipping in with seven points from the blue line. Highlighting the Voyageurs incoming class is Sudbury-native, Kennedy Roy, a product of the Sudbury Lady Wolves system, who will add size to the defensive line for the Voyageurs. The four incoming forwards that have been added to the roster will also be thrown into the mix early as Colarossi hopes they will help generate a 200-foot game with offensive threat and creativity.

“We anticipate building off last year’s growth and the team’s first playoff appearance by continuing to be a by-committee team that competes for 60-minutes all over the ice.” – Stacey Colarossi, Head Coach

Season Preview

One year after coming within two victories of qualifying for the CIS Championship, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks will be a team in transition in 2016-17. Boasting a roster that features 14 players in either their first or second year of eligibility, the Hawks will expect some growing pains early on in the season with the goal of improving heading into the playoffs. Headlining the group of six incoming freshmen this season is Jaden Head, a forward out of the Durham West Lightning of the PWHL. A talented offensive player, she will look to make an immediate impact up front for the purple and gold this season. Head is joined by four other forwards in this year’s recruiting class, including local recruits Emily Woodhouse and Carly Aucoin, both out of the Cambridge Rivulettes system, as well as defenceman Jamie Watson, who will see plenty of playing time on the blueline. While the Hawks make up is decidedly young this year, there is a solid core of returning veterans that will be looked upon to lead this team. Included in that group is team captain and defenceman Giuliana Pallotta, fellow blueliner Jacky Normandeau, and forwards Dollee Meigs and Jessica Prevette. All four players can be expected to play big minutes for Coach Osborne’s squad and contribute at both ends of the rink. Other names to keep an eye on this season include a group in the sophomore class that enjoyed solid years in 2015-16. At the top of the list is OUA All-Rookie team member Madison MacCulloch who finished last year tied for the team-lead in goals with seven. On the blueline, second year defenders Megan Kingston and Cassandra Calabrese will see playing time in all situations while forwards Kaitlyn Hatzes and Morgan Bates will continue to see their roles grow with the team. The Hawks biggest area of strength this season will be in goal where both fourth year Amanda Smith and second year Lauren Webber have the ability to steal a victory every time they start. Smith posted a sparkling 1.46 GAA and 0.948 save percentage last season while Webber led the team in wins with eight and shutouts with four.

“We will be a young team that will play hard and complement our biggest strength which is the goaltending duo of Amanda Smith and Lauren Webber. There will be plenty of opportunity for new players to step up and play significant minutes for us at critical times during the season.” – Rick Osborne, Head Coach

Season Preview The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team was one goal away from a trip to both the OUA Championship game, and CIS Nationals in just their third year of existence. While they fell short in a triple overtime thrilled, the Lakers refused to sit back and dwell on the loss. Instead, they reloaded their roster with the plans of taking another run at both an OUA title and a trip to Nationals. Entering their fourth year, the Lakers have made strides – impressive ones – each season. From missing the playoffs, to a first round exit and last year’s second round, Game 3, threeovertime marathon, Nipissing is poised to once again make some noise. While there has been turnover throughout their lineup each and every season, a main core of players has remained and really made an impact. Starting in goal, Jackie Rochefort has been a rock for the team and will be counted on once again to lead the charge. Zosia Davis and Molly Sipprell will be key on the blueline, along with Stacey Henshaw who was an OUA All-Rookie in 2015-16. Up front, Kaley Tienhaara, Sam Strassburger, Brooklyn Irwin and Bronwyn Bolduc will be providing the veteran leadership, as well as the offence. Newcomers Hunter Mosher and Jetta Derenoski are expected to jump right in and make an impact. With a good mix of new and returning players, the Lakers are looking to make 2016-17 their year and if the trend of improving every year continues, this should be an exciting season.

“As a group we are looking on continuing to build on what we started three short years ago. Being the first year that we have fourth year graduating players will mark the end of the careers for some players that started our program in 2013. The players that started our program made a big commitment to jump into a program that they really did not know much about, but it has been an exciting ride for all of them, myself included, and we are hopeful that we can continue to climb the ladder. The original group has created a solid foundation for the future of Lakers women’s hockey.” – Darren Turcotte, Head Coach

Season Preview It’s a big year for the Gaels as they are set to host the 2017 CIS Women’s Hockey Championship in March at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee. The road between today and March will be a challenging one though as the Gaels will look to earn their way into the Championship as the conference representatives. Although the Gaels are losing two OUA all-stars to graduation, 13 of the 22 players in the lineup this season are in their third or fourth year. The lone returnee who earned OUA honours is Katrina Manoukarakis (Scarborough, Ont.), the reigning OUA Rookie of the Year and a member of the CIS All-Rookie team. Entering her second year, the Gaels forward will look to replicate the success of her first year, where her 15 goals were second in the OUA thanks in large part to the conference-best nine power-play goals. The talent of some of the younger players on the Queen’s roster is solidified by a veteran leadership core. Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) was named the captain for the upcoming season, while fellow fourthyears Michele Knecht (North York, Ont.), Kyla Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont.), Clare McKellar (London, Ont.), and Micaela Smith (Cobourg, Ont.) each get an “A” for 201617. After falling short in the playoffs last year, an experienced Gaels team looks to claim an OUA medal and earn their spot at the CIS Championship hosted by Queen’s in March.

“Queen’s Athletics is excited to be hosting the CIS National Championships in March, and is focused on delivering an amazing experience for both the players and fans. Meanwhile, the host women’s hockey team has been training hard with a goal of winning another OUA championship. We are not approaching this as a “gimmie” year. Quite the opposite, we intend to battle and earn our way there the hard way.” – Matt Holmberg, Head Coach

Season Preview After a disappointing season a year ago, the Ryerson Rams focused on improving their offence and the coaching staff is excited about the new players now suiting up in the blue and gold. Transfers Ailish Forfar (Dartmouth), Kryshandra Green (Western), and Danelle Im (Laurier) all bring experience to the Rams along with offensive talents and the will to win. The Rams blue line took a hit with the graduation of captain Jessica Hartwick but fifth years Stephanie Chiste and Justine Glover are poised to lead the defence corps along with returnees Laura Ball and Rachel Dowdall, both with a year of OUA action now under their belts. Ryerson is the most experienced it’s ever been with five players in their fifth year of eligibility and the Rams will lean on those players to help guide them back to the playoffs. The season kicks off on October 13 as the Rams take on the Brock Badgers.

“With eight new players injected into our lineup this season, our team is excited to see where we fit into the OUA women’s hockey picture. This is the toughest conference in the country and every team has a legitimate chance to win against any opponent. We believe our team has grown offensively and in overall experience, but there is plenty to prove and we expect it will take a tremendous effort to climb into the upper echelon of our conference.” – Lisa Haley, Head Coach

Season Preview The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team enters the 2016-17 season with their eyes on the post season following a disappointing exit in 2015-16. After finishing the regular season in second place (12-4-4-4), the Blues dropped their three-game OUA quarter-final series to the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Blues return two of their top three point-getters from last season. Fifth-year forward Taylor Day led the squad with 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points in 24 regular season games. The 2015-16 OUA all-star also spent time at the Hockey Canada women’s development camp this past August in Calgary. Kristi Riseley returns for her fifth and final year and second year as team captain. Riseley ranked third on the team with 17 points last season. Fellow veteran Rebecca Bourgeois will be called upon to lead a young defensive corps, which includes 2015-16 CIS all-rookie Cristine Chao. Sophomore netminder Valencia Yordanov is back between the pipes for the Blues. Yordanov held a .939 save percentage over 19 games in her rookie season last year.

“This league is so close and the teams are so competitive. I think our first challenge is making the playoffs. All of our returners are hungry and want to be more successful in the post season but we really need to focus on one game at a time. It will be really important that we don’t look too far ahead.”

Season Preview Then 2016-17 season marks the 10th year of UOIT hockey in the OUA. Over the previous nine seasons, UOIT has always played the “underdog” role but teams across the province are starting to take notice that the Ridgebacks are not to be taken lightly. This was evident in the CWHL entry draft with two former Ridgebacks being selected by the Toronto Furies. The Ridgebacks have a lot of veterans in the lineup that all have OUA playoff experience under their belt. Six players enter their fifth and final season while three players enter their fourth season. The Ridgebacks have nine of their top ten leading scorers returning to the lineup, giving the team a solidified offensive attack. To balance out the large amount of graduating seniors the team will have over the next two seasons, Caruana has been busy recruiting for the future with six freshman cracking the lineup. After just missing out on the playoffs for the last two seasons, Caruana is confident that he has assembled a lineup that is strong enough to send the Ridgebacks back to the postseason.

“The team has worked really hard in training camp and we are looking forward to getting the season started. We have a deep group of veterans mixed in with a talented recruiting class. We have improved our goaltending and defensive unit while adding some depth up front. I expect our team to be hard working that competes every night.” – Justin Caruana, Head Coach

Season Preview For the Waterloo Warriors women’s hockey team, the time is now. Since head coach Shaun Reagan took over the program in 2011, the Warriors have transformed into a perennial playoff team, inching the bar higher year after year. The last five seasons have inarguably been the most successful seasons of Warriors women’s hockey ever. Coming off a 14-9-1 season that included a number of statement victories, the Warriors are poised to join the upper echelon of the OUA with a veteran-laden squad that has skill up and down the lineup. The optimism is high for the Warriors, despite losing their top two scorers from a year ago. Waterloo will still have plenty of weapons up front, led by Rachel Marriott, who tied for 7th in the OUA in goals with 12. Marissa Redmond also returns after notching 19 points in 24 games last year, and Angela McDonald returns after not playing last season. The Warriors also have a collection of youngsters that will contribute offensively as well, including sophomores Tegan Odland, Alyssa Gee, and Alison Hanson, and top recruits Cynthia Cavanaugh and Samantha Burbridge. On the blue line, the Warriors are simply stacked with offensive upside, defensive talent, and experience. Michelle Tanel and Stephanie Digness will once again anchor the seasoned blue line that includes six players in their fourth or fifth year of CIS eligibility, making Waterloo’s back end among the most experienced in the nation. Playing behind the blue line is one of the rising stars of the CIS in goaltender Stephanie Sluys. In two seasons, Sluys has registered a 14-10 record with a 1.63 goals-against average, .939 save percentage, and 9 shutouts. Sluys will be joined in the crease by veteran Jamie Grove and rookie Taylor Reimer to form one of the top goaltending trios in the nation. The Warriors look promising on paper, but they also have a leadership core that’s ready to supply the intangibles necessary to make the next step. Fifth-year forward Siobhan HewittKenda will captain the veteran squad, and Reagan knows she’ll have plenty of help in the leadership department.

“We’re expecting to win. It started in the offseason, with strength and conditioning training, and on-ice work. This is my first recruiting class to reach fifth year. This is what we’ve been building to. We’re ready to win.” – Shaun Regan, Head Coach

Season Preview After a regular season that saw the team go 15-9-0, the Mustangs were back in Calgary to compete for the CIS banner just one year after making history by winning the program’s first national championship. Even though they didn’t return to London with a title, the season produced a number of standout performances from veterans and rookies alike that will only help the team as they pursue their third straight championship appearance. Expected to help the team get there are Emma Pearson, Lyndsay Kirkham, and Brianna Iazzolino. Pearson returns for her fifth season, and will serve as this year’s team captain, while Kirkham is expected to be one of the team’s top forwards. The Cranbrook, BC native only joined the Mustangs for the 2015-16 season but quickly emerged as a player to watch. Over 24 regular season games she netted three goals while assisting on another nine. Meanwhile, Iazzolino returns as one of the most reliable purple and white defenders after spending time at Hockey Canada’s Women’s Development Camp this past summer. Nine new faces have also been added to the roster, with Alyssa Chiarello, Rachael Irvine, Rachel Armstrong, Shana Alexander, Brianna Rice, Shelby Ryan, Tareya Webster and Renae Nevills all earning a spot. Not only will there be new faces on the ice, but there will be a new coach at the helm as Kelly Paton takes over as head coach after serving as associate coach last season.

“We are excited for the 2016/17 season to start. We feel we have a very diverse group of athletes that together have the potential to achieve many successes this season. This year’s recruiting class brings raw athleticism and a strong foundation of skill that will provide them the opportunity to make an immediate impact to our program. “ – Kelly Paton, Head Coach

Season Preview The Windsor Lancers women’s hockey team is coming off a rough 2015-16 season that saw them miss a spot in the OUA post season for the first time in seven years. With a majority of the roster returning, the 2016-17 edition of the Blue & Gold are an experienced squad that will use the ups and downs of last season as stepping stones in a very difficult and tight OUA conference. On offense, the Lancers boast the top three leading scorers in the OUA. Fifth year forwards Erinn Noseworthy and Shawna Lesperance, and third year dualsport athlete Krystin Lawrence are all back and looking to once again dominate the OUA leader board. Fellow fifth year forward Jillian Rops continues to provide an unmatched commitment to winning and a wealth of experience that will help lead the Lancers back into the post season. Defensively, head coach Jim Hunter will rely on fifth year Natalie Barette and third year Rachel Chantler to anchor the blue line. Last season Barette finished fourth overall in team scoring, while Chantler was a staple in Coach Hunter’s defensive plan as just a sophomore with the team. Transfer Jasmine Morning will also add some experience on the blue line after playing her freshman year at Mount Allison University in 2014-15. Hoping to add some additional depth to Windsor’s defense are newcomers Molly Jenkins and Morgan Farrow in net. Jenkins, a London, Ontario native, joins the Lancers after a solid career with the London Junior Devilettes, while Farrow comes to Windsor from the Ontario Hockey Academy.

“With 95% of our roster returning, including the top three scorers in the league last season, we have a great opportunity to improve on our finish from last year and once again qualify for the post season. ” – Jim Hunter, Head Coach

Season Preview The York University Lions women’s hockey team enters the 2016-17 campaign with something to prove after narrowly missing out on the post-season in each of the last two years. For the second year in a row, the Lions improved their point total from the previous season but it was not enough to secure a playoff berth in the OUA standings. The line-up has the talent to finish among the conference’s top eight and that remains something head coach Dan Church is eyeing for his squad. Up front the Lions return five of their top six scorers from last year, including each of the top four in Chelsea Tucker, Amy Locke, Erin Locke and Rianna Langford. Erin was just a rookie and made an immediate impact for the team, but the rest of the quartet has at least two years of experience with the program and will be counted on to lead an otherwise young team. The biggest losses will be felt on the back end after the graduation of goaltender Megan Lee and former CIS all-Canadian defender Kristen Barbara. However, the openings have given new players the chance to step up and Church has high hopes for many of them, most notably third-year defender Jenna Gray and rookie blueliner Taylor Davison. Between the pipes there is a battle for the starting job between second-year goaltender Eva Hall and rookie Lauren Dubie. Both of them have shown flashes of brilliance in the preseason and, regardless of who starts, will provide a solid presence for the team. The Lions’ last trip to the playoffs was in 2012, a semifinal run that was the best for the team under Church. That came before anyone on this year’s roster was part of the program, and the current Lions are poised to make their own mark in 2016-17.

“My goal for this season is for us to be the most competitive team in the OUA. I’m not putting any predictions on wins or losses, but it’s really about building ourselves up so that teams know they’ve played a tough opponent every time they play us. If we can do that, the success will follow.” – Dan Church, Head Coach
