2018 SEASON PREVIEW

By: Mike Hogan

It was a season of extremes for the Carleton Ravens in 2017. They opened the season with a heart-stopping win at Queen’s, but then dropped their next three games, including a 45-43 shootout against Waterloo.

The next week, they’d win in double-overtime in the Panda Bowl, but lose two of their remaining three games. An overall 3-5 record was not good enough to get into the playoffs. This is, needless to say, a highly-motivated group heading into this season. The Ravens capitalized when Mike Arruda decided he’d rather play at Carleton than Ottawa. With a full season under his belt, big things are expected form the second-year quarterback. He’s added confidence to his repertoire and will look to improve upon his freshman season, where he posted a 2,146 yard, 12-touchdown effort. Arruda completed 58-percent of his passes and threw eight interceptions. He added 77 rushing yards, scoring twice on the ground. Nathan Carter returns at running back. At 5’7” he’s not the tallest back in the OUA, but he’s one of the most explosive. He rushed for 1,110 yards – tops in the conference and second in the country - adding six TDs, while catching 11 passes. He’d be named a Second Team All-Canadian. Also in the mix are freshman Josh Ferguson and Jalen Jana, a transfer from Simon Fraser University. Arruda will have a couple of familiar targets to throw to in Second Team OUA All-Star Phil Iloki and Quinton Soares. Iloki led the Ravens with five touchdown catches and 16.4 yards per-catch last season. The other starting jobs are up for grabs. Nigel Goodridge and Chad Manchulenko return, while Khalik Johnson is a freshman to watch. Another interesting possibility is Dominic Walker, who has transferred from Troy University in Alabama. The offensive line will feature First Team OUA All-Star Nolan McGreer and Jesse Lawson at tackle. The guards will be Elijah Watson and Dan Omara, while the centre will be Darius MacKay. Other players to watch are Jesse Tamming, who joined the program as a walk-on, and fifth-year Raven K.C. Bakker, who was a Second Team OUA All-Star and was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes. Here’s something that opposing offences won’t like to hear. Head Coach Steve Sumarah says that Kene Onyeka seems quicker this year. He collected 10.5 sacks last season, tied for the most in the country. He added 12.5 tackles for a loss. Like Carter, he was named a Second Team AllCanadian. The other end will be manned by Shaiheem Charles-Brown. The Ravens will also have a nice rotation in the middle. The starting tackles will be Fred Robitaille and Tevin Bowen, while Jesse Kocins will also see ample playing time. Josh Walsh will man the middle of the linebacking corps. He’ll be flanked by Justin Veltri on the weak side, and Jack Cassar on the strong side. Other players in the mix are Cole Hepburn and Trevor Hoyte, with Louis Cavanagh backing up Walsh. In the secondary, Jon Edouard and Danny McWhirter will get the nod as starting cornerbacks, while Reid Wiley and James McCallum will serve as the halfbacks and Guillaume Caron will be the starting safety. Jay Dearborn will also play a significant role, representing the only Raven last year with multiple interceptions. Leading the defence from the sidelines, meanwhile, is a new-look coaching staff, with Paul Eddy Saint-Vilien serving as the Coordinator. Mike Domagala will be back again to do the punting. He may end up doing both jobs, but Vincent Plouffe will compete for the place kicking job. Last season Domagala was fifth in the country with an average of 42-yards per punt and was named a Second Team OUA All-Star. He connected on 70-percent of his field goal attempts with his longest coming from 47 yards out. By their own standards, the Ravens underachieved a year ago. A more mature Arruda leading the offence should make a big difference, and if the offensive line can play up to its potential, this could be a surprisingly good year in the capital.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW IWhen a football team doesn’t reach its goal, the person most likely to pay the price is the coach. That was the case with the Gryphons, who made that change in the off season.

By: Mike Hogan

Gone is Kevin MacNeill after two seasons as Head Coach and seven seasons as Defensive Coordinator. He’ll be replaced by former Offensive Coordinator Todd Galloway, who has been with the Gryphons for seven years. And Coach Galloway has a great deal of talent to work with. James Roberts has graduated and the starting quarterback duties will be passed to Theo Landers. He possesses a very strong arm and has good command of the pocket. Landers started some games last year when Roberts was injured and completed 63-percent of his passes, but threw six interceptions against just one touchdown. Landers is not afraid to run with the ball, and averaged 6.9 yards per carry. He’ll be backed up by second-year Gryphon Brayden Lassenba. With Johnny Augustine gone, the Gryphs may employ a trio of running backs. The bulk of the carries will likely go to Jamal Hooker, who had 43 carries for 239 yards last year. Freshmen Jean-Paul Cimankinda from Ottawa and Kwame Osei, a CEGEP grad from Montreal, will also find their way into the mix at some point. Receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker will certainly be worth keeping an eye on this season. He’ll likely be Landers’ main target. The 6’4” Mississauga native was second on the team last year with 32 catches for 422 yards and is poised to take the next step in his development. Zeph Fraser, Kade Belyk, Thomas Bresciani and Jordan Terrio round out a young, but talented group of receivers. Jaylan Guthrie isn’t ready for Week One after off-season surgery. Therefore the o-line will start with Team Canada left tackle Andy McFalls, with Ben Petrie lining up at left guard and Colin Jerome at centre. Coulter Woodmansey will serve as right guard, with OUA Second Team All-Star Eric Starczala at right tackle. The defensive line will feature Greg Corfield and St. Jerome, Quebec freshman Jeremy Kapelanski at tackle. Alain Cimankinda, led the team with six sacks and eight tackles for a loss, will be at one end, while Charlie Taggart and highly-touted NCAA transfer Carter Wilson will compete for playing time on the other side. It’s a deep, talented group that will see several players make significant contributions this year. Tackling machine Luke Korol will be back at weak-side linebacker. He led the team with 66.5 tackles and added 3.5 sacks. Job Reinhart will play the middle, with CEGEP freshman Uriel Kalenga from Gatineau and A.J. Allen both getting reps on the strong side. Akeem Knowles is back for a fourth year and will be the boundary corner. With the wealth of DBs the Gryphons have had in the past, he’s been anxiously awaiting a chance to start. Jason Richards will start at the boundary half spot. Dotun Aketepe moves from field halfback to safety this year, as Elijah Walker fills his old spot. Graham Brodie will be the field corner. One player who will likely play his way into the lineup is CEGEP freshman Brendan Murphy from Chateauguay. Gabe Ferraro was the OUA First-Team All-Star kicker last season and was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders, but returns for a fifth season with the Gryphs. He hit 33 of his 40 attempts, including a 51-yarder. His 33 field goals were the most in the country while the 51-yard FG was the second longest in U SPORTS in 2017. He averaged 37.5 yards per punt as well. The Gryphons are perhaps the most intriguing team to watch heading into the season. While they were hit hard by graduation, losing several key starters, the program has recruited exceptionally well over the last few years and it’s time to see if those prospects become dynamic players at this level. If they’re as good as advertised, Guelph could have a very successful season.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW

By: Mike Hogan

It was a season that had a continuous build for the Laurier Golden Hawks, only to conclude in the most disappointing way possible. They finished the regular season 6-2, then beat McMaster in a memorably physical semi-final. Expectations were high that they could go into Western and knock them off in the same manner they did twelve months earlier. Final score, Western 75, Laurier 32. Losing a close game to a team as talented as Western would still sting, but the memory of getting beaten the way they did will not go away quickly, which could be a tremendous source of motivation this year. Head Coach Michael Faulds must realize he has a very good team. The question everyone wants to know is will it be good enough? Tristan Arndt will in all probability start at quarterback for the Hawks. He backed up Michael Knevel for the most part in 2017, but started the final regular season game and playoff semi-final, both wins over McMaster. He completed 76-percent of his 29 passes in the regular season. Knevel would return to start the Yates Cup final. Arndt brings a good arm and a solid running element to the position. Jacob Spinella will be the next QB on the depth chart. Levondre Gordon is back with the Hawks after averaging over 100 yards per game last year, finishing with a total of 825. He won’t get all the playing time though, as Kevantye Bailey and 230-pound halfback/fullback Osayi Iginuan will also get a chance to carry the ball. He’s tough to bring down in short-yardage situations. The Hawks have among the best receiving corps in the country, headlined by Kurleigh Gittens Jr. who caught 75 passes, averaging 119 yards per game and scoring six touchdowns last year. It’s far from being a one-man show though, as Brentyn Hall returns. He averaged 19 yards per reception on 30 catches. Brendan McCracken will see a bigger role, while Toronto’s Esson Hamilton, a freshman from Chaminade, Ente Eguavoen, and Nick Petermann provide depth. On the offensive line, second-year Hawks Sukhneek Kahlon and Bryce Bell will be the tackles, while a pair of fourth-year players, J.D. Richardson and Drew Mairleitner, will play guard. Laurier doesn’t play its lineman on the left of right side, they flip between the boundary and field side. Myles Methner is the centre, while Braydon Noll and Alex Pigozzo will also see the field this season. The Hawks will run out a talented, deep group of defensive linemen. Robbie Smith returns, much to the chagrin of opposing tackles. His 10.5 sacks, including 4.5 in a game against Queen’s, tied for the highest total in the country last year. Alfred Green will line up at the other end. In the middle, Trevaughan James and Sam Acheampong will start. Players who will be a part of the rotation include Zach Houghron, John O’Reilly, Tyler Eckert, and Liam Spencer-Enright. Shomari Hutchinson will be the strong-side linebacker. There’s an open competition in the middle between Mario Pineda and freshman Tommy Bringi from London, St. Andre Bessette. The weak side sees a lot of depth with Tanner Cadwallader, Mitch Rooney and Jothan Salfarlie completing for playing time. In the secondary, Ron Kinga and Daishane Johnson will be the starting cornerbacks, while the halfbacks will be Malcolm Thompson and Will Amoah. Scott Hutter, who reeled in a couple of interceptions last season, returns to play safety. The kicking duties will again be handled by Nathan Mesher. He was good on 15-of-19 field goal attempts, including a 52-yarder, the longest in U SPORTS last year. His punts travelled an average of 38.8 yards. The Hawks are an extremely talented bunch; now we have to see if they are in a position to knock off the Mustangs should their paths cross on the way to the Yates Cup final.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW It ended with a bang, not a whimper.

By: Mike Hogan

The McMaster Marauders’ 2017 season concluded with a loss in an incredibly physical game at Laurier. Now Head Coach Greg Knox has to work with a very young team, especially by McMaster standards, as they look to climb back to the top of the OUA ladder. Last season, quarterbacks Jackson White and Andreas Dueck battled for the No. 1 job. White won the contest, largely because he was the more mobile of the two. He would go on to have a fairly productive season, passing for 1,737 yards with 10 TDs against six interceptions. He’d also rush for 229 yards. The two are once again close on the depth chart, but there’s now a third contender for the crown as Liam Putt, once a top recruit, joins the Marauders after stops at Windsor and Laurier. Jordan Lyons rushed for an even 700 yards in the regular season, but then facing Queen’s had the second-best rushing day in U SPORTS playoff history, carrying the ball 39 times for a remarkable 319 yards; eight yards shy of Gee-Gee Davie Mason’s record. A couple of backs will look for playing time when Lyons needs rest. Raymar Lloyd returns from injuries, while freshman Jacob Mason from Burlington, Assumption will both see playing time. It will be a new look receiving corps, both in terms of personnel and size. Tyson Middlemost and Tommy Nield return. They each had three TD catches last year, most on the team. Returnees Matt Hurley and Isaac Crawford will have the opportunity to play more, while 6’2” newcomer Levi Paul from the Moose Jaw Thunder was a CJFL All-Star last year, and 6’2” Josh Perez was a Laurier Golden Hawk. In all there are a dozen receivers vying for playing time. On the offensive line, Joe Bencze has flipped over from the defensive side of the ball and will start at left tackle. Jakub Szott will play next to him at guard. Wyatt Croucher is the centre, Wyatt Edmonds will be the right guard, with Max Guy starting next to him at tackle. It’s a young group to be sure, and Niagara Falls freshman Brad Currell from Canisius will get a long look during the season as well. When Defensive Coordinator Scott Brady looks over his troops, he’s not going to see very much experience, but there are several players who have headed to Hamilton after playing junior football out west. Cole Klughart, who played junior ball with the Okanagan Sun last year, and Gabe Bagnall, a transfer from Acadia, will be the ends. Klughart’s teammate with the Sun, Mitch Lyons, will be one of the tackles, while a couple of other young players will get a chance to play. Enoch PennyLaryea is a converted running back and a redshirt transfer from Union College in New York State, while Dawlson Bourdages is a top recruit from McNab in Hamilton. The Marauders also lost all of their starting linebackers. Eric Blake will now start on the strong side. Nate Edwards will be the middle linebacker, while the weak side will be manned by yet another former Okanagan player, Eli Haynes, or true freshman Ryan Leder from St. Thomas Moore in Hamilton. David Weldon would have been in that mix, but suffered a season-ending injury in training camp. Others to watch are Jesse Zajaros from the Kamloops juniors and true freshman Eryk Bujalski from Winnipeg. The secondary features Nolan Putt and Ben Cross on the corners, Mitch Garland and Noah Hallett are the halfbacks, and Lucas Bill will play safety. Freshman Nana Yaw Serbeh from the Ottawa Sooners will also see action. Adam Preocanin will once again do the punting and place kicking. He hit 14 of his 18 field goal attempts a season ago, while averaging 39.4 yards per punt. There will be a lot of teaching by the coaching staff this season with so many athletes new to the OUA level. It will help that many of the new defenders have played junior football, but this looks like a transitional year for McMaster.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW It was a weird season for the Ottawa Gee-Gees. They finished with a 5-3 record, establishing themselves as a slightly pass-oriented team despite being in a transitional year at quarterback.

By: Mike Hogan

Head Coach Jamie Barresi had a good off-season in terms of recruiting, and that may pay off both in the long and short term because he’s added some transfers with some post-secondary experience. Strong-armed Alex Lavric finished the season at quarterback after Victor Twynstra was hurt. Lavric threw for 1,409 yards and eight TDs, but the Gee-Gees wanted to upgrade at the position and went west to find a potential answer. Sawyer Buettner just finished his third season with the Regina Jr. program and brings a little more experience to the table. The two competed for the starting job in camp. Bryce Vieira returns for a fifth year and attending the Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp as an undrafted player. A competent ball carrier and pass catcher, he’s back and will find himself at the front of a long line of running backs. Donald Shaw and Dawson O’Dei return to the GeeGees, joined by a pair intriguing newcomers. Jordan Burgher is a transfer from Chabot College in California, and Amlicar Polk is a true freshman from Westdale in Hamilton. It’s a very deep, talented group. The super-speedy Kalem Beaver is back to lead the receiving corps. He should be the big-play leader among the group, possessing elite speed. Carter Matheson will also be a primary target. He led the Gee-Gees with 38 catches for 489 yards last season. Others competing for game time will be Dylan St. Pierre, Zach Hynna, Tristan Park, and Harrison Tallyhoe. If there’s a question mark heading into the season, it could be the offensive line, and it may develop into a strong point as the year progresses. Freshman Zack Pelehos from Gananoque, Ontario, and Liam Oudman-Debek will compete for the left tackle position. Tanner Bishop made the OUA All-Rookie Team and will be the left guard. Matt Bruder will be the center, but freshman Nick Sine from Brockville, Ontario may push him as the season progresses. Bryan Latouche will play right guard and Thomas Rowlands will play right tackle, after transferring from Laval. The GeeGees are particularly happy with their recruiting haul on the O-line. The defensive line could play at a very high speed this year because there is quality depth. The starting tackles will be Tramayne Clarke-Stephen and Francis Perron, while Cody Baranyk and Reshaan Davis will man the ends. At linebacker, Reyd Kessler will be in the middle, flanked by Abed Hamidi on the strong side and James Peter on the weak side. Thomas Carrier will compete for time at SAM, along with Rashad Spooner. Kyle Rodger, a transfer from U-Montreal, will get some playing time as well. The secondary should be a strength. Jamie Harry returns after being named a First Team All-Canadian. He led the OUA and finished second in the country with five interceptions and will play the boundary cornerback spot with Alex Douglas, or perhaps St. F.X. transfer Mike Miller at boundary half. Luke Griese is slated to start at safety, though Ryk Vanderpol from Nelson in Burlington may also get into the mix. Daniel Shaw has incredible speed and will be the field halfback, while Cody Cranston will be the field corner. The Gee-Gees have lost talented kicker Lewis Ward to the Ottawa Redblacks and are giving three players a chance to replace him. Max Capriotti, Campbell Fair, and Loic Legendre will all get long looks from the coaching staff. It’s a wide-open competition as the season begins. This could be an exceptionally good Gee-Gees team if two questions are answered in the affirmative. Will they get above-average play at quarterback and how will the offensive line hold up? There are multiple playmakers on both sides of the football, making this a team to keep a close eye on as the season progresses.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW

By: Mike Hogan

It was incredibly strange 2017 season for the Queen’s Gaels. They started the season 0-4, only to win their final four games of the year – posting an average of 58 points per game in the process – to slide into the final playoff spot.

This year, another slow start, strong finish scenario may be anticipated for Head Coach Pat Sheahan’s squad, but for an entirely different reason – this team is very inexperienced, especially defensively. There are several key returning players on the offensive side of things, including fifth-year quarterback Nate Hobbs. Hobbs led the OUA and finished second in the country with 2,570 passing yards. His 21 touchdown passes, meanwhile, led the nation. Hobbs’ numbers in the final four contests were particularly impressive, averaging 416 yards per game with 17 touchdowns and just a pair of interceptions. He’ll look to improve on those numbers and will have several talented weapons at his disposal. Jake Puskas returns at running back. He played in the final five games last year, averaging 147 yards during the four-game winning streak. After an impressive camp, Tristan Kucher will also be in the mix, as will two prized recruits – UCC’s Rasheed Tucker, among the top backs from Toronto, and Nathan Langley from Burlington, Notre Dame. The Gaels will have a veteran group of receivers for Hobbs to target. Chris Osei-Kusi is entering his CFL draft year and big things are expected from him. He caught 49 passes for 723 yards with seven touchdowns in ’17. Also returning is Matteo Del Brocco, who recorded 707 yards on 41 catches. Kingston’s Jeremy Pendergast, whose father Tim was the starting quarterback for the Queen’s 1992 Vanier Cup winning squad, looks to become a key part of the offence. Rudy Uhl, Richard Burton, and Sakhia Kwemo will also get a chance to contribute. Kwemo’s older brother Nelkas played with the Gaels last season and is now with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. There will be a plethora of huge linemen wearing the Tricolour this season. The left tackle will be third-year starter Josh Mosely. Tim Vanheuvelen will start at left guard, the centre is Nicholas Pinard, Adam Dingwall will be the right guard, while Jacob Butler is the right tackle. Harrison Taylor and Jonathan Wedgbury will also get playing time. The offence should be good, but the defence is a giant question mark as 11 of last year’s starters are no longer with the program. There’s also a new Defensive Coordinator in former Gael Ryan Bechmanis, who returns to Queen’s after serving as Carleton’s D.C. Cam Lawson, who had 3.5 sacks last year, is set as one of the defensive tackles, but the other starting three positions on the line are up for grabs. Two players to watch who may emerge from that group are ends Tyler Roy and freshman Anthony Federico from Niagara Falls. The linebacking corps should also work itself out, eventually. Kurtis Schaefer, Dominic Ciraco, and Wells Karabin will all get long looks from the coaching staff, and all should see playing time this year. The coaching staff also wants to look at Spencer Giffin and Will Bannatyne, among others. This group may be fluid all season. It’s also going to be an incredibly inexperienced back end, as all the projected starters will be either first or second-year players. Zach Kealey and Connor McQuilkin will get extended looks, as will fourth-year DB Ejaz Causer. This group is definitely a work in progress and could be vulnerable, especially early in the season. The kicking game will look to improve with the return of Nick Liberatore. He hit 13 of his 19 field-goal attempts, a success rate of 68-percent. His average punt travelled 34.3 yards. The schedule maker wasn’t very kind to the Gaels, as they will face all five of their fellow playoff teams from a year ago. If the young players progress a little more quickly than the norm, the club should be strong enough on offence to compete for a playoff spot once again.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW There’s a new sheriff in town, or at least a new Marshall on campus.

By: Mike Hogan

Eighteen percent of OUA head coaches are now named Greg Marshall, as the former Queen’s Defensive Coordinator joins his namesake from Western in terms of running programs in the conference. The Blues new coach has an extensive background as a defensive mind at both the CFL and U SPORTS level. Inheriting a team that finished 1-7, he obviously has some work to do. Among his first jobs was to select a starting quarterback. Both Clay Sequeira and Connor Ennis saw time at QB last year. Neither completed 50-percent of his passes and both threw more interceptions than touchdowns. The Blues would love to establish one of the pair as their starter, but heading into the season opener, the race was still too close to call. Both will in all likelihood see action. Cole Goodfellow has the most experience of those vying to start at running back. That said, the fourth-year Blue only had 20 carries last year. He will face competition for playing time from a trio of freshmen, Adam Williams from Oshawa, Max Gyimah from Hamilton, and Sudbury’s Djuwa N’Galamulume. This is truly an open contest with an eye to the future. There’s reason to be optimistic about the receiving corps. Will Corby established himself as a go-to receiver, catching 27 passes for 412 yards, leading the team in both categories. Nick Stadnyk, Daniel Diodati, and Wacey Schell will provide whichever quarterback wins the starting job with some talented targets. The Blues offensive line will be a work in progress. Eddie Nam will start, but it may be at tackle, or it could be at guard. Dylan Hart will hold down one of the other starting jobs. Spencer Goodfellow will start at centre, but Sam MacMillan will vie for playing time. Matt Freibauer has made the switch from tight end to tackle, while the Mehry brothers, Mojtaba and Mostafa, join the program after playing junior with the Windsor Fratmen. Also in the mix is freshman Connor Graham from Burlington. There’s some depth here, but it’s yet to be determined which athlete plays where. While Mark Surya is back as the Offensive Coordinator, the Blues now have a formidable pair of minds running the defence. Marshall and Defensive Coordinator Bob Mullen bring a wealth of experience to the program. Veterans Mekhi Henry and Julian Romano will line up as the defensive tackles. The talented Henry led the Blues with four sacks and seven tackles for a loss last year. The starting ends will be Carter Gladman and Malcolm Campbell, who returns after not playing in 2017. There’s an open competition to see which other players become a part of the rotation. At linebacker, Lamar Foyle will be the man in the middle. Matt Renaud will play the strong side, while three players will be competing for the weak-side starting spot – Dan Solaroli, Kalvin Zhou, and Cameron End. There’s also a competition for playing time in the secondary. Jamal Johnson will start at safety. Damoy Robinson is penned in at one halfback spot, while at the other half, playing time may be split between Nick Hallett and Mak Stephens. Four players will compete for the two starting cornerback spots, Javen May, Jordan Gillespie, Patrick Pankow, and Caleb Zigby. The Blues lost All-Canadian punter T.J. Morton to graduation and will let three combatants sort out the punting and place-kicking duties. Ryan Grandell and Ethan Shafer both kicked field goals for the Blues last year. They’re back and will be joined by freshman Chris MacLean from Brampton in the battle for the two kicking jobs. This is a transitional period for Toronto. Marshall will put his own stamp on the program over time, and will find out over the course of the season which of his young players will be a part of the future. A playoff spot would seem to be a long shot at this stage, but it’s an important year in the Varsity Blues development.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW It was perhaps the best story of 2017.

By: Mike Hogan

The Waterloo Warriors, who had struggled mightily over the last several seasons, started the year 4-0, doing so in wildly entertaining fashion, averaging 45 points per win. The last half of the season didn’t go so well, with the black and gold losing all four games, including a 53-49 heartbreaker to Guelph that essentially cost them a playoff spot. The Warriors will not be surprising anyone this season; however, as this offence could be really, really good. This year there is no question who the starting quarterback is. Tre Ford split the snaps with Lucas McConnell, but the U SPORTS Rookie of the Year will be the undisputed starter this season. Ford’s mobility and pure speed makes him unique, but this year he’s put on 15 pounds of muscle and is throwing the ball with much more velocity. He also gained experience at the Montreal Alouettes’ camp this spring and is perhaps the biggest wild card in the conference. There’s little doubt he will be the one player opposing teams have to game plan for the most in the OUA. Dion Pellerin will be the starting running back this year. He split the carries last year with Brandon Metz, but Metz will line up as a slotback for the most part, though he could find himself in the backfield from time to time. Ditto Richmond Nketiah, who will get snaps both as a back and as a receiver. Metz and Nketiah make an already impressive receiving corps even better. Tyler Ternowski, Mitch Kernick and Gordon Lam give Ford multiple aerial options and provide the Warriors with an offence that could score a ton of points. Ternowski led the Warriors with 32 catches, while Nketiah, an Alouettes draft pick, had five TD receptions. Jesse Gibbon is in his CFL draft year and is coming off a successful East-West Bowl. He’ll line up at left tackle. Ben Koczwara was drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and will play left guard. Kyle Boismier will start at centre, while the right side of the line will see Troy Curtis at guard and All-OUA Rookie Team player Spencer Andrews at tackle. It’s a strong group that has good depth behind the starters. There’s not a lot of depth on the Warriors defensive line. OUA All-Rookie Team member Mike Perak, along with Josh Brown and Dylan Whitty, will be three of the starters. Also competing for playing time will be Justin James and Nick Snider. This is a group that is worth watching as the season progresses. A deep group of talented linebackers will make the front seven better than it was a year ago. Kurtis Gray had a fantastic season and was named an OUA Second-Team All-Star. He’ll be the strong side linebacker. On the weak side, Michael Reid will get the start. One of the more interesting storylines in the conference is taking place at middle linebacker, where veteran Devon Hinsperger will be pushed for the starting job by his freshman brother Jack, a hometown Waterloo recruit. Tre Ford got most of the headlines, but his twin brother Tyrell had an equally significant impact on the Warriors defence. He’s a true shutdown corner and will start on the boundary side. He also provides the Warriors with an extremely dangerous returner. Lautaro Frecha, who played in the East-West Bowl, will play next to him at halfback. Lucas Merlin returns to play safety, while the field halfback will be manned by a pair of CFC Top 100 Recruits – freshmen Daeshaun Jupiter-Deane from Pickering, and Georgetown’s Andy Melo. Shaq Sealy will be the field corner. Caleb Girard is back to perform both kicking duties. He hit 16 of his 21 field goal attempts and averaged 34 yards per punt. Last year the Warriors were the darlings of Canadian university football. The story was intriguing, but the novelty factor has worn off. Waterloo will be taken extremely seriously by every opponent. They could easily be a playoff team this year.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW It’s a season that few OUA football fans will soon forget. The Western Mustangs dominated their opponents en route to a Vanier Cup championship.

By: Mike Hogan

They were 8-0 in the regular season, winning by an average score of 48-13. The ‘Stangs won their playoff games 66-12 over Guelph, 75-32 against Laurier, 81-3 over Acadia, and capped their 12-0 season with a convincing 39-17 victory in the Vanier Cup against the powerful Laval Rouge et Or. Seventeen Western players were recognized as OUA All-Stars. Simply put, it was one of the most dominating performance in Canadian university football history. For Head Coach Greg Marshall, it was his first Vanier Cup title, and now there’s a legitimate opportunity to go back-to-back. Quarterback Chris Merchant returns after showing improvement in virtually every game last year. He was the OUA’s First-Team All-Star, throwing for 1,995 yards and a dozen TDs. His running ability may be underrated, as he rushed for 463 yards, averaging 9.9 yards per carry. Over the course of the season, Merchant went from being a question mark to being a force. Kevin John, a second-year player from Mississauga, will back him up. Almost unfairly, the Mustangs top three backs all return. Alex Taylor averaged 118 yards per game and will be joined by Cedric Joseph, who rushed for 10 TDs, and Trey Humes, who was just scratching the surface in terms of showing off his skill. Shy of using a wishbone formation, it will be interesting to see how Marshall divides up the playing time among the trio. Freshman Jalen Jackson from Windsor is the next back in line. To make things more depressing for opponents, the ‘Stangs top four receivers also return. Malik Besseghieur, Harry McMaster - who like Taylor was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos – Brett Ellerman, and Cole Majoros are all back. Justin Nickson and Griffin Campbell are also ready to play; it’s just a question of finding them game time. On the offensive line there was bad news when David Brown, later drafted by the Calgary Stampeders, suffered a knee injury in the Vanier Cup. He’s close to returning, but Western doesn’t want to rush him back. In the interim, Dylan Giffen will move from right to left tackle for Brown, while freshman Zack Fry from the London Jr. Mustangs will get reps at right tackle. Dimitri Pronko will be the centre, while Gregoire Bouchard will be the left guard, and Spencer Hood, a former defensive lineman, will replace right guard Matthew Bettencourt, who has left the program. Western is deep on the D-line and will rotate Austin Fordham-Miller with starting tackles Jimmy Hawley and Mitch Stadnyk. Andrew Thurston will start at one end, with Nicolas Theriault and Mark Shelley splitting time on the opposite side. Brandon Thompson will also try to find some playing time. If there was one area in which the Mustangs did get hit with graduation, it was at linebacker. The weak-side backer will now be Philippe Dion. Fraser Sopik, who had 7.5 tackles for a loss and forced three fumbles, will patrol the middle, while a key addition will be transfer Michael Moore from Queen’s. In the secondary, Mackenzie Ferguson and Mike Sananes will man the corners, Alex Salytchev and Bleska Kambamba will line up at halfback, and Daniel Valente will be the safety. Jake Lindley is a transfer from Windsor who will get playing time, while freshman Rob Panabaker from London will also get a look. Marc Liegghio had a fantastic season, hitting 29 of his 32 field goal attempts. He also averaged 40.9 yards per punt and returns for a third season. The overwhelming sentiment is that not only is Western a heavy favourite to win the Yates Cup, but a favourite to win back-to-back Vanier Cups. There is a lot of football to be played in the next three months, so a coronation may be premature, but barring something strange, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where the Mustangs aren’t at the very least back in the Yates Cup final.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW There were two things that defined the 2017 Windsor Lancers – injuries and losses.

By: Mike Hogan

Head Coach Joe D’Amore’s team had little to no luck a year ago, and there’s zero question that the injuries had a direct impact on the number of losses. There is still optimism within the program; however, with the return of the injured players and an influx of new talent on the roster. Quarterback Sam Girard battled an injury-riddled season and is back to lead the offence. The third-year pivot was injured in the season opener against Waterloo, then returned for the season finale against York. In those two games he threw six touchdown passes and no interceptions. The Lancers only had one other TD pass all season. Girard’s return is vitally important. Ben Bergamin will miss this season after undergoing off-season surgery. The back-up quarterback job will go to Colby Henkel, who played junior football in 2017 for Kamloops. Marvin Gaynor will once again be the primary running back. He had an exceptional 2017 for the Lancers, rushing for 935 yards, with an average of 7.1 yards per carry. Those numbers are even more impressive when you knew opponents realized he was Windsor’s first and at times seemingly only option. All-purpose back Marcus Kentner returns, as does Jacob Savoni, so there is good depth there. The Lancers may not have an Evan Pszczonak or a Jordan Brescacin in the lineup, but they’ll provide Girard with several options. Tristan Carter opened the season with a five-catch, one-touchdown game against Waterloo before he was injured and missed the remainder of the season. He’s back and ready to go. Matt James returns, as does Kaeden Walls, who had 16 catches a year ago. The Lancers should have an improved aerial attack this season. The offensive line will see Lindon Ivezaj line up at left tackle. Drew Desjarlais will be the left guard. Converted defensive lineman C.J. Church is the centre, with guard Ibrahim Hassoun and tackle Lucas Moore manning the right side. Also competing for playing time will be freshmen Colin Campbell, Blake Collinson, and Tyler Lirette. The Lancers will have a new look on defence, as Jesse Alexander has joined the program as Defensive Coordinator. He’s coached for a decade with Laurier and York after a stellar career as a Golden Hawk linebacker. Windsor’s front four will present some problems to opponents in 2018. Courtney Ellis will line up at one end, while on the other side will be OFC Defensive Player of the Year Adam Slikboer. The 6’5” Slikboer played with the Windsor AKO Fratmen last season and was a CJFL All-Canadian. In the middle will be younger players Zach Taylor and Zack Benson. Daniel Metcalfe led the country in tackles last season with 71.5 and will once again be the weak-side linebacker. Josh Van Roie will man the middle, while the strong-side backer will be Dan Stirling, who was an All-OUA Rookie last season. Among other players in the mix at linebacker are Bennett Vani, Chaz Alain, and Mount Allison transfer Nathan Vaikla. In the secondary, the cornerbacks will be Evan Martin on the boundary side, and Isaiah Warner on the field side. The halfbacks will be Andrew Beatty and Donovan Selmes. Matt Gayer led the Lancers with two interceptions and is back for another season at safety. Owen Ford and Kelvin Adeleye-Apanisile should also see some playing time, as will JoJo Sarfo-Boateng. Clark Green is back to do the kicking. He hit 13 of his 16 field goal attempts last season, one of which was from 49 years out – tied for thirdlongest FG in the country last season. His average punt was 38.5 yards. The Lancers are hoping that they bottomed out a year ago, winning just once with a 43-27 victory over York in the final game on the schedule. On paper, this is a better team than it was a year ago; the challenge for Coach D’Amore and his staff is to take that talent and turn it into a few more victories.

2018 SEASON PREVIEW

By: Mike Hogan

It was a difficult season, so the York Lions are happy to see 2017 in the rear-view mirror. There would be just one win for Head Coach Warren Craney’s crew, but if there was any consolation, the victory came in the annual Red & Blue Bowl, a 41-16 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues. The program is eager to put last season to bed and attack this year’s campaign.

Back for a fourth season is quarterback Brett Hunchak. While he still looked like his old self at times last year, other times he looked lost without his security blanket in the receiving corps, his brother Colton. It’s not like Hunchak had a terrible year, throwing for 1,795 yards – good enough for fifth in the OUA – but it was down almost 300 yards from the previous year. Hunchak threw 10 interceptions against nine touchdown passes. Expectations were high last season, but the Calgary native should be much better with this year’s group of pass catchers. Colton Hunchak was injured for most of last year, playing in just three games, yet scoring six TDs in that limited amount of action. He’s pumped for his return this year, and maybe gave an indication of what’s ahead when he was named the MVP of the East-West Bowl. He’ll be joined in the receiving corps by Alex Daley and Eric Kimmerly, who had 25 and 26 catches respectively. Daley added a pair of touchdown receptions. Luther Hakunavanhu, Vincent Reale, and tight end Nikola Kalinic will provide other aerial options. Kayden Johnson will start at running back and there is no doubt he is one of the fastest backs in the country. He won U SPORTS gold in the 60-metre hurdles, finishing in a time of 7.97 seconds. Johnson averaged 4.8 yards per carry last season and is capable of increasing that statistic dramatically. The Lions also want to get a long look at freshman Darnel Jarrett from Vanier College. OUA newcomer Chase Quewezance will start at left tackle, heading to York from the Edmonton Juniors. Freshman Caleb Palmateer will line up next to him at left guard. The centre will be Anthony DiNardo, while the right side will be composed of guard Chavaughn Barrett and tackle Aarmin Purewal. The defence is young with some veterans sprinkled in, but there are some very good players in the group. Jamian Rush and freshman Kwadwo Boahen will man the middle of the front four. Rossini Sandjong-Djabome will be one of the ends, while Kevin Musai will be the other starter. Sandjong-Djabome is very active, recording a dozen tackles for a loss and recovering a couple of fumbles last year. The 12 TFLs was just 0.5 behind the U SPORTS co-leaders in that category. At linebacker, Jacob Janke is due for some good luck after battling injuries throughout his career. He’ll start on the strong side and will be joined in the group by second-year middle linebacker Jared Ott, while Damian Jamieson will play the weak side. Safety Desi Dixon will be the man in the middle of the secondary. The cornerbacks will be fifth-year Lion Ian Lawrence – who led the team with 45.5 tackles last year - and Talik Ehouman, while Kadeem Thomas and Xavier Rogers will be the starting halfbacks. Handling the kicking duties once again will be Dante Mastrogiuseppe. He hit just 50-percent of his field-goal attempts last year, going nine for 18, but is more than capable of a bounce-back season. He averaged 38.6 yards per punt. The potential is there for the Lions to be pretty good offensively. If the Hunchak brothers remain healthy, it will go a long way toward making the Lions a much more competitive team. The problem at York over the years has been quality depth. There are some good starters on the roster and some promising young reserves, but if there are injury problems again, the Lions could be in for another long season.

Yates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being

presented, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the MichiganMinnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years.

Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date.

The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, he later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915.

With the reorganization of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and 1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions.

From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the top-ranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams (McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates

Entering its 111th season of competition in 2018, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 31 league titles. The Varsity Blues, winners of the inaugural championship in 1898, stand second with 25 victories. This year’s Yates Cup will take place on Nov. 10 at the home of the highest remaining playoff seed.
