SEASON PREVIEW The Brock men’s hockey team will begin a new era as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary of the program. First year head coach Marty Williamson takes over a team that returns 21 players from a year ago. Up front, the Badgers return seven of their top eight scorers, led by fifth year senior Sammy Banga who recorded 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points in 201617. Other key returnees include Adam Lloyd (11G, 13A), Matt MacLeod (13G, 10A), Chris Mannicia (6G, 15A) , Josh Timpano (7G, 13A), Brody Silk (9G, 8A), Dexter Weber (12A) and checker Ryan Purvis. On the blueline, the Badgers are deep with plenty of experience in Evan Morden (5th Year), Patrick Volpe (4th Year), Jeff Corbett (3rd Year), Skylar Pacheco (3rd Year), Dallas Rossiter (3rd Year), Dexter Weber (2nd Year) and Braden Pears (2nd Year). In goal, Clint Windsor is coming off his best season of his Brock career and will have to stay healthy in order for the Badgers to have a shot at returning to the Queen’s Cup final for the first time in 10 years. In 201617, Windsor posted an impressive 10-1 record in just 12 starts with a 2.33 GAA, 393 saves and a .945 save percentage. He missed over half the season due to injury. Key newcomers to watch for the Badgers include two-sport athlete Connor Brown, Nate Looysen and Ayden MacDonald.
“As a new coach my goals are to learn about my players and the league and to build and grow to have a successful playoff run. This is a strong league with lots of talented players. Our players will have to play hard game in and game and be able to execute for us to be successful.” – Marty Williamson, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Carleton ushers in a new era in 2017-18 following the departure of long-time bench boss Marty Johnston, who left the Ravens in the offseason for a coaching opportunity with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. Carleton will have a fresh start under the tutelage of interim head coach and former NHL player Shaun Van Allen, who takes over the reins of the program after seven seasons as the team’s assistant. Last year, Carleton’s talented lineup could not repeat its run to the University Cup of two seasons ago, as the Ravens struggled through injury and inconsistency during a 2016-17 campaign that saw the group underachieve. With a renewed sense of optimism, the team enters the regular season with high hopes following last year’s disappointing first-round playoff exit to bitter rival UQTR. With an exciting and deep recruiting class joining forces with a group of proven veterans, the Ravens should be a competitive team in a very deep OUA East division.
“This year we are very excited with the group of players we have. This team has great leadership and lots of depth. We have a very difficult schedule ahead of us playing in one of the strongest divisions in the country. Our goal this year will be to buy into our system and improve as the year progresses come playoff time.” – Shaun Van Allen, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW There’s no doubt Concordia Stingers head coach Marc-André Elément likes to put high-energy, hard-working teams on the ice, and the 2017-18 will be no exception. Elément says, “We’re always going to play a fast game. We’re never going to hang back. We have a lot of energy and every night we’re going to battle.” That approach helped the Stingers finish in second place in the 10-team OUA East Division with a 19-7-2 record. Concordia won a first-round playoff series for the first time since 2001, defeating the UOIT Ridgebacks before succumbing to the Queen’s Gaels in the second round. While the 2017 Stingers’ approach may be familiar, many of the names have changed. Gone are fifth-year captain Olivier Hinse, leading scorer Anthony De Luca, the 2017 U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, and allstar goaltender Philippe Cadorette. The leadership of the team is now in the hands of fourth-year forward Philippe Hudon, a gritty player who also serves as a Bell Let’s Talk spokesperson. The Stingers return several top scorers from 2016-17, including Philippe Sanche and Anthony Beauregard. Now in their second years, they will be counted on to score goals for the team. Elément says the biggest area of improvement will be in the Stingers’ end of the rink. The addition of defenceman Carl Neill is expected to have a big impact. The Vancouver Canucks fifth-round draft pick comes from the QMJHL where he played five seasons with Sherbrooke Phoenix and was their captain the last two years. Goaltending will be in the hands of rookie Julio Billia, who starred with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens for five seasons, and secondyear man Marc-Antoine Turcotte, who also had a lengthy, accomplished QMJHL career, mostly with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
“This season we are still going to be a young, fast team with a lot of character. We’ll be a bit bigger than last year and better defensively.” – Marc-André Element, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW In 2016-17, the Gryphons successfully qualified for the OUA playoffs for a ninth straight season and went on to sweep the Brock Badgers to advance to the OUA West Semi-Finals. In 2017-18, the Gryphons have re-loaded and boast a roster that features a strong core of returning veterans to compliment a total of nine new faces set to join the lineup. The Gryphons are fast and deep up front. Scott Simmonds, a twosport varsity athlete who also play’s rugby, provides some grit at centre, while fourth-year winger Seth Swenson is the focal point offensively. Swenson led the Gryphons with 32 points in 28 games last season, scoring 12 goals. The defence got a big boost with the arrival of Patrick Kudla, a 6-3 Guelph native, who was selected 158th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. Kudla is a gifted, smooth player, with great hands and an unselfish approach. His addition to a unit that features proven vets like Mark Raycroft and Josh McFadden will solidify the Gryphons at the back end.
“This is a more veteran team than we’ve had in a number of years. We have an excellent returning core in our leadership group. We’re also a good skating team so we expect that we’ll be able to push the pace this season.” – Shawn Camp, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After three disappointing seasons in which Lakehead finished in the bottom half of the West Division, the Thunderwolves are looking to rebound after one of its best recruiting efforts in several years. There will be ten new players on the squad this year, and many of them are expected to make a significant impact right from the start. The addition of NCAA transfer Nic Renyard gives Lakehead three solid goaltenders, all capable of starting and winning in the OUA. The Wolves have added some offensive firepower this year, and should have four lines that can score. Lakehead looks to have a good young team mixed with some veteran leadership, so it should be an exciting year for the new-look Thunderwolves, with the entire team pulling in the same direction “I’m excited about the team we have this year. We have several good additions - some with local ties, and a couple of former NCAA players that we were fortunate enough to recruit. Combined with our returnees, it makes for an interesting team that should have a lot of depth. That creates competition which is good for a team. I’m looking forward to the getting the season underway to see what we’ve got” – Bill McDonald, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW As the Voyageurs enter their 5th season back in the OUA, they will be looking to take that next step in their quest for the Queen’s Cup. Despite making the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, they have yet to make it out of the first round and will be looking to change that this year. After graduating their first official class since the program’s resurgence, 5th year forward, Caleb Apperson, will be donning the C this season, taking over for Vincent Llorca, who was the only captain the team has had but is now playing in the pro ranks. “We are excited about the depth of veteran players returning. In all we have a wealth of experience complimented with some talented newcomers. Discipline and attention to detail will determine our fate this season!” – Craig Duncanson, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW In the 2016-17 regular season, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team finished third overall with a 15-9-4 record, and 34 points on the season. Their season came to an end in heart-breaking fashion as they lost Game 3 of their OUA West Quarter-final series 3-2 in overtime to the Windsor Lancers. Determined to see their playoff run extend even further this year, head coach Greg Pulhalski has brought in four recruits to bolster his team, which includes defencemen Kyle Jenkins (Brampton, Ont.) and Anthony Conti (North Vancouver, B.C.), as well as forwards Anthony Sorrentino (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Jeremy Pullara (Woodbridge, Ont.). Although the fresh faces bring new talent to the team, the purple and gold will be looking to their veterans to lead the pack. Laurier’s offensive attack will once again benefit from the talent of Andrew Fritsch of Brantford, Ont., who comes into his second season with the Hawks, having previously played in the OHL with the Niagara Ice Dogs, Owen Sound Attack and the Sault. Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Of Laurier’s returning players, Fritsch led the team in goals, with 11 on the season, and also lead the team in assists, with 16, and capped off the year with being named an OUA Second Team All-Star and recipient of the OUA West Most Sportsmanlike Award. Joining Fritsch up front for the Hawks will be Brandon Robinson from Pickering, Ont. After a five-year OHL career spent across the Brampton, North Bay, and Kitchener Rangers franchises, the 2016-17 season marked the first year in which Robinson suited up in purple and gold, where he quickly shone for the Golden Hawks as he followed suite to Fritsch in goals, with nine to his name. Other impact players returning for Laurier include forwards Danny Hanlon (Waterloo, Ont.) and Christian Mroczkowski (Kitchener, Ont.), along with defenceman Matt Franczyk (Winnipeg, Man.) and Mac Clutsam (Flamborough, Ont.). Perhaps Laurier’s most important retuning player may be fourth year goaltender Colin Furlong of Cambridge, Ont., who is set to stand between the pipes for another season. With experience playing in the GOJHL, the GMHL and the OHL with the Kingston Frontenacs, the netminder is coming off an impressive year in which he finished the regular season first in the OUA and second in the country for saves, with 693 to his name. Furthermore, he registered a .928 save percentage which was good enough to land him at fourth in the OUA and seventh overall in the country.
“We are very excited for the upcoming season. Our team feels like we let an opportunity slip by in last year’s playoffs. We look forward to make the most of our season.” – Greg Puhalski, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The McGill University men’s hockey team have begun their 142nd campaign and coming off a 24-4-3 first-place finish in the OUA East. Despite losing five key players to graduation, the Redmen roster is solid and features eight freshmen, seven sophomores, nine juniors and four seniors. The squad includes 24 products of the Canadian Hockey league, with 18 from the QMJHL, five with OHL experience and one from the WHL. Leading a solid core of 20 returning veterans is sophomore goaltender Louis-Philip Guindon(15-7-0, 1.82 GAA, .934 save pct., 1 SHO), junior defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi (41GP: 5-34-39) and sophomore forward Guillaume Gauthier (42GP: 10-20-30). Other returning snipers expected to handle the bulk of the scoring include ECHL and AHL product Christophe Lalonde (40GP: 14-14-28) and former Detroit Red Wing prospect Jerome Verrier (37GP: 9-19-28). Expected to play a major leadership role is new team captain Nathan Chiarlitti (30GP: 7-11-18), who skated for Canada at the FISU Winter Games in Kazakhstan and won the 2017 Guy Lafleur Award of Excellence. The 25-year-old had an NHL tryout with Arizona in 2013. Chiarlitti transferred to McGill last year from St. Francis Xavier and previously played in the OHL with both Sarnia and Owen Sound. Also, big things are expected from sophomore Alexandre Sills(32GP: 7-7-14), a 6-foot-3, 213-pound centre, who is healthy after an injury-plagued season. Anchoring the blueline along with the aforementioned Chiarlitti and Talbot-Tassi is Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick Gianluca Curcuruto (35GP: 2-9-11), a junior and Nathanael Halbert (31GP: 2-9-11), a sophomore. Two players invited to NHL rookie camps highlight a strong recruiting class. Michael Cramarossa, a forward from the OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs (305GP: 57-107164) who attended the Chicago Blackhawks camp, and Nikolas Brouillard, a three-time all-star defenceman in the QMJHL – with Drummondville, the Quebec Remparts and Rouyn-Noranda -- who was invited to the Vegas Golden Knights camp.
“We’ve got a solid team this year with a good core of returning players and high quality first-year players,” says Kelly Nobes, who brings a 204-93-3 overall record into his eighth season as head coach. “We have a very tough schedule, one of the toughest in the league, which will help us in our process and make us battle hardened as the season progresses. “

SEASON PREVIEW After missing the playoffs for the first time in the program’s history, which began back in 2009, the Nipissing Lakers are looking to come through with a big 2017-18 season. Returning players like Dan Desrochers and Deverick Ottereyes are expected to take a step this year after missing half the season last year injured. Fourth year veteran players such as Colin Campbell, Brock Morrison, Sam Gleason and Dylan Staples will be key players in determining how the Lakers fair this year. The goaltending should be solid with the addition of Brent Moran from the North Bay Battalion and Domenic Graham returning. The class of new recruits have made a solid first impression lead by Brett Hargrave, Lucas Brown, Travis McEvoy, Brody Morris and three transfer players Jake Wright, Matt Donnelly and Tyler Brown. They will need to contribute regularly for the Lakers to make a splash in a tough East Division. “We are looking forward to rebounding and again looking to make a playoff appearance. After an injury plagued season where we had up to 10 players injured for some games we are looking to stay healthy this year. Exhibition has been positive, but the Lakers know playing in a very tough East Division every game will be very tough. We are looking forward to bouncing back in every way.” – Mike McParland, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Gee-Gees have added several key pieces to the mix this year as the majority of the team enters its second season of OUA play. A strong 2016-17 campaign highlighted by a seven-game win streak in January ended in a tight playoff series with Queen’s in the fourth-fifth matchup in the East. Conference re-alignment will challenge the emerging Gee-Gees, whose depth is improved this season. Ottawa will become familiar with the Carleton Ravens early in the regular season, facing the cross-town rivals four times before the December exam break including one game at TD Place for the second annual Colonel By Classic. A five-game road swing to begin 2018 will also be a key stretch for the Garnet and Grey. “I’m interested to see how our guys are going to react to being second-year players. Last year everything was new – new rinks, new opponents, all that and so you go at everything with a clear mind. There’s less surprises this year but there’s also a pre-game expectation that we didn’t really have last year. We’ve seen a lot of good things and we’ll have good internal competition for spots if everyone is healthy. We have a good mix of a variety of types of players too, so it should be interesting.”
“I think our depth is better, and our schedule is going to require it. We know our team much better now and we know our base systems, but we’re still going to be countering other team’s strengths, it’s not just our one game plan against everyone. We’re proactive and that’s our philosophy which worked well for us last year.” – Patrick Grandmaître, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Queen’s is coming off one of their best and memorable seasons in program history in 2016-17. Last year saw the Gaels reach a new high in the national rankings hitting No.3, record a team record 18 wins in the regular season and return to the Queen’s Cup and University Cup for the first time since 1981. The Gaels finished as the OUA silver medalists and after a tumultuous journey to Fredericton, New Brunswick for the national championship, finished in a tie for fifth nationally. The 2017-18 version of the Gaels features a deep veteran lineup with some strong first-year additions that should contribute right away. The Gaels will once again have goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) between the pipes as he enters his fifth and final season. Bailie was at the top of his game throughout the OUA playoffs last season sporting a 1.39 goals against and a 0.960 save percentage with a pair of shutouts. Offensively Queen’s should have no trouble putting the puck in the back of the net as they see Slater Doggett, Eric Ming and offensive defenceman, and the new Gaels captain, Spencer Abraham. Slater and Doggett combined for 26 goals and 61 points despite missing time while competing for Canada at the FISU winter Universiade. Gaels captain Abraham is fresh off another appearance with the Florida Panthers rookies at their development camp. A top-ranked program the Gaels will once again look to be contenders for the Queen’s Cup and make another trip back to University Cup for the second straight season.
“In the OUA there are no nights off, anyone on any given night can win, which makes our league very exciting. We want to put ourselves in a position to compete for the Queen’s Cup come February. We are a veteran team finally who have played through a long playoff run and know what it takes. The recruits we brought in have really bought into our culture and I cannot wait to get started.” – Brett Gibson, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW RMC is seeking to define itself as a consistent competitive program. The team has made strides over the past two seasons, and this year the Paladins look poised to make the next step and compete for a playoff spot. The team has brought in its largest recruiting class in the past decade, with 11 new faces being added to the roster. The new energy and skill, paired with the leadership and grit that the program already has in place, has the future looking bright. The two biggest events on the calendar will take place in the second half, as RMC will be seeking its’ first win against West Point since the resumption of the historic series on January 20th, while looking to defend its Carr-Harris Cup title against Queen’s on February 1st.
“With the addition of so many new players, we will undoubtedly have some growing pains this coming season. However, the skill, work ethic and enthusiasm from our new guys have already started to rub off on the rest of the lineup. The program is building and trending in the right direction, and this year we look to improve every week and have an opportunity to win every night.” – Richard Lim, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW Coming off the most successful regular season in Ryerson hockey history, the Rams enter this season with renewed hope that they can challenge for the school’s first hockey championship. Last year the Rams earned a 22-4-2 record to lead the OUA East and garner their highest national ranking at the No. 3 position. The Rams couldn’t translate their regular season highs into playoff success, however, as they were upset in the second round. Now in his second year behind the bench, head coach Johnny Duco has brought in a strong recruiting class which is committed to the team-first approach and systems in place as the Rams build towards a better outcome this season. Leading the Rams will be defenceman Alex Basso who becomes the 45th captain in Rams history. Joining Basso on the blueline are veterans Alex Leader and Daniel Poliziani. Up front the Rams are led by last year’s OUA scoring champion, Aaron Armstrong. He will be joined by Matt Mistele, Marcus Hinds and a handful of new faces. Steven Harland has impressed in the preseason, as has David Miller. The Rams crease boasts Taylor Dupuis returning for his third season along with newcomer Mario Culina, a Memorial Cup champion this past year. Ryerson opens the year on the road in Guelph before facing the team that bounced them from Queen’s Cup contention last year, the Windsor Lancers, for the Rams home opener on October 15.
“I couldn’t be happier to be back for another season; we have an outstanding group of young men that have shown a willingness to learn and buy into our team-first mentality. I am excited to watch this team continue to grow as we strive for our first championship in program history.” – Johnny Duco, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team enters the 2017-18 season ready to work and compete with the best in the OUA. Under first-year head coach Ryan Medel, Toronto’s mantra will focus on putting defence first, a high compete level and hard work. With nine first-year players on their roster, Medel will call upon U of T’s veterans to help the rookies acclimatize to OUA caliber hockey. “We’re looking forward to getting our season underway,” said Medel. “We know we’re in a tough division but are excited for the challenge. Our attention to detail will be crucial on a nightly basis. We have a fairly young group but that also means we have a lot of guys with something to prove. As a group, we are focusing on trying to get better each day.” The Blues will look to returning forwards Aidan Wallace and Matt Campagna to lead the offensive charge this year. The duo combined for 47 points last year, with Campagna leading the squad with 18 assists and 25 points and Wallace finding the back of the net a team-leading 14 times. Toronto’s defensive corps will once again be led by team captain Charlie Connell. The Toronto native led the Blues D with 15 points in 2016-17. He will also call upon third-year standout Josh Hanson to help bolster the blue line.

SEASON PREVIEW The 2016-17 was one of ups and downs for UOIT that saw them reach the U SPORTS national rankings for the first time in program history but ultimately fall in game three of the first round of the playoffs to the Concordia Stingers. Entering his second full season behind the bench, head coach Curtis Hodgins continues to turn over his line up with seven players graduating last year. His recruiting class has plenty of championship experience under their belts as four players come from the RBC Cup champion Cobourg Cougars. UOIT will look to their freshmen class to help bolster their offensive numbers that saw them score 88 goals in 28 regular games. 2017-18 leading scorer Danny Elser looks to have a repeat performance as he scored 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points. The one-two punch of Brendan O’Neill and Tyson Teichmann return in goal for UOIT, as they posted a combined for a 2.93 goals against average and .906 save percentage one year ago. The defensive unit looks to be solid with six returnees and two freshmen making up the unit.
“Our team is eagerly looking forward to another year of competing in the very tough OUA eastern conference where there are no nights off. The challenge for our club will be to find that consistency that allows us to compete every single night and to strive toward our goal of finishing in the top half of our conference.” – Curtis Hodgins, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW
The Warriors are coming off their 13th straight .500-or-better
season, as they finished 2016-17 with a 12-12-4 record before losing to the top-seeded Ryerson Rams in a three-game thriller in round one of the playoffs. After a rocky start, Waterloo was one of the more dangerous teams in the second half of last year, registering a 9-5-1 record over their final 15 games. Now, the Warriors will look to carry that late-season momentum into the 2017-18 campaign. A year ago, Waterloo’s most glaring deficiency was goal scoring: It was a transition season after the graduation of a number of top forwards in 2016, and the result was a division-low 2.36 goals per game. But this year, the nucleus of young forwards returns nearly intact, with some key additions from the major junior ranks. Rookie forward Markson Bechtold comes to the Warriors after a 231-game WHL career that saw him notch 100 points (including a career-high 48 in 2015-16). Meanwhile, Keigan Goetz joins the club after serving as the captain of the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads, where he put up 20 points and 144 PIM last year. The pair of highly-touted recruits will join a deep group of forwards that include OUA West All-Rookie team member Zac Coulter, who led the team with 21 points a year ago. Fellow sophomores Michael Siddall, Nick Halagian, and Michael Morgan will also look to take the next step offensively, after finishing in the top 8 in team scoring as rookies in 2016-17. While the Warriors will certainly miss the leadership of departing five-year vet Riley Sonnenburg – and his team-leading 11 goals – Waterloo is wellequipped to make some drastic offensive improvements in 201718. The Warriors’ strength remains on the blue line, despite the massive hole left by the graduating Stephen Silas (the former Colorado Avalanche draft pick signed a pro deal in France for 2017-18). The defence corps is led by Mike Moffat, who was named to his second consecutive OUA all-star team last year. St. Thomas University transfer Eric Diodati registered 10 points in his first OUA season, while OHL veterans Ryan Hanes and Adam Bignell played shutdown roles on the Waterloo back end. In goal, Mike Morrison returns for his fifth season after being named co-winner of the team MVP award in 2016-17. Last year, the former Kitchener Rangers standout was a workhorse for Waetrloo, playing in 25 of 28 games, and notching a career-best 2.80 goals-against average in the process. But after three years playing alongside the now-graduated Chris Hurry, Morrison will have a new creasemate in major junior vet Trevor Martin. The Alberta native split 2016-17 amongst four clubs, finishing with 22 games for the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen. Martin’s best season came in 2015-16, where he finished with a 2.63 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage in 38 games for the Memorial Cup host Red Deer Rebels. While Bourque and the coaching staff is encouraged by the composition of this year’s team, the veteran bench boss knows that the OUA West division is unlike any other in USports hockey – top-to-bottom, it’s the most competitive and evenly-matched division in the country. But that won’t stop the Warriors for aiming high, and trying to position themselves for a deep playoff run come February.
“We are going to look to our young guys to contribute but also our vets to be leaders on and off the ice. We are also built from our blue line out, it is key that our game is strong defensively and the rest will fall in place. We all know the parity in the OUA West is crazy. It is very unpredictable. We’ll always enter the season with a goal of finishing in the top four, getting home ice in the playoffs, and go from there.” – Brian Bourque, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After a season marked by the team’s absence from postseason action for the first time in 19 years and an 8-19-1 record, the Mustangs will be looking for a bounce-back year after revamping their roster with young and talented prospects heading into the 2017-2018 season. The Mustangs’ roster looks significantly different this season, with plenty of new recruits being added to the experienced core of the purple and white that will be returning to the ice for Western. The departure of star goalie Greg Dodds, captain Matt Marantz, and Andrew Goldberg, will weigh heavy on the Mustangs, but the return of Rob Polesello, Ray Huether, and Jonathan Laser offers the team the ability to rely on both experience and talent heading into the season. Polesello, who will be returning to the team for his fifth and final year of eligibility, will hope to repeat his personal success from last year. Polesello led the team in points with 21 on the season and also tied for first in goals scored for the Mustangs, netting ten goals while assisting on eleven more throughout the year. Huether stood alongside Polesello to lead the team with ten goals of his own six assists at the centre position as he heads into his third season with the purple and white. As a thirdyear defenceman, Laser will be looked to anchor the Western defence this season with a bevy of new faces joining the position this year. The Mississauga, Ont., native tallied two goals on the year while leading the team with 14 assists. There will be plenty of new faces on this year’s roster with defencemen Zach Core, David Eccles, Matt Watson, and Quinn Lenihan all joining the lineup, alongside new forwards Steven Beyers, Chris Corbeil, Anthony Stefano, Kyle Petit, Cordell James, Kolten Olynek, Adam Sinclair, and Theo Lewis, while Liam Herbst is the newest member of the Mustangs goaltending fraternity. Although they may not have played on last year’s Mustangs team, two of the ‘new’ additions come to Western with a bevy of U SPORTS experience, Beyers comes to Western after finishing his undergraduate degree at Saint Mary’s, while Corbeil returns to the purple and white after a few years away focusing on his career in the National Lacrosse League.
“The depth in the OUA appears to be better than ever this season. We have a very young team with 14 new players, but our goal is to be one of the top four teams in the West this season.” – Clarke Singer, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Windsor Lancers men’s hockey team is looking to build on an incredible run last season that ended one win shy of the OUA Finals. The Lancers will obviously be trying to get back OUA West finals and further, however head coach Kevin Hamlin had no illusions on how hard such a feat would be. “Every path is unique and different,” Hamlin said, speaking to how his team could repeat last year’s success. Hamlin also mentioned that any team that goes as far as his squad did last, regardless of skill, need an immense amount of “puck luck” as coach Hamlin put it. The Lancers will also have to overcome being the youngest team in the OUA. So it remains to be seen how some inexperience will affect the on ice product. However, despite having an astonishing 13 freshmen on his roster, Hamlin trusts in his returning players to help the team.

SEASON PREVIEW The York Lions men’s hockey team enters the 2017-18 campaign with targets on their backs as the defending champions after last year’s magical run to the Queen’s Cup. The Lions earned three more points in the regular season than the previous year and then went on a remarkable run through the conference playoffs, winning seven of eight games to claim their first Queen’s Cup title since 2004. Their national championship experience ended sooner than they would have liked and in heartbreaking fashion, by a 1-0 score in overtime to the eventual silver-medal winning Saskatchewan Huskies, but overall the Lions had a tremendous season in accomplishing a major goal. The Lions were by far the best defensive team in the OUA last season in allowing just 59 goals in 28 games, three less than every other team in the conference and 17 less than their OUA West Division rivals. The defensive unit will be anchored again by team captain Shayne Rover, who is back for his fifth and final season and provides the team with a steady presence on the blueline. The strong defensive unit was backstopped by arguably the best goaltending tandem in the country. Mack Shields was named the OUA West rookie of the year, an OUA and U SPORTS all-rookie team member and an OUA West allstar and U SPORTS all-Canadian after leading the OUA in goals against average and finishing second in save percentage, and he played every minute in the post-season. Behind him was Alex Fotinos, who started nine games and also had impressive numbers with a 2.39 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. At the other end of the ice, the Lions were one of the lower-scoring teams in the OUA but still have plenty of offensive talent up and down the line-up. In addition to Sheppard, Trevor Petersen was a top-10 OUA scorer last year and is a two-time conference all-star who will be counted on to put up big numbers again. Sophomore Scott Feser had a decent regular season as a rookie but announced his presence in the playoffs with a breakout performance, averaging more than one point per game, and is poised to dominate in his second year. “Our expectations are to get better every day. Now that we are in the conversation as one of the best teams in the country, we want to remain there and that requires us to be elite in everything we do. It is our goal to put ourselves in position to return to Fredericton next March.” – Russ Herrington, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Brock women’s hockey team returns 17 players from a year ago highlighted by OUA Rookie of the Year and USports AllRookie selection Anne Berg, and standout goaltender Jensen Murphy. Other key returnees include OUA AllRookie selection Kaitlyn Colonna, captain Brenna Murphy, Christina Ieradi and Maggie Spratt-Mallick. Berg finished her rookie season ranked among OUA leaders in scoring registering 11 goals and 12 assists in 24 games. Ieradi finished second in team scoring adding 19 points (8G, 11A) while Colonna (9A), SprattMallick (3G, 5A) and Murphy (7A) rounded out the Brock scoring leaders. In goal, Jensen Murphy is coming off an exceptional sophomore season where she ranked among OUA leaders in games played (22), minutes played (1316:09), saves (655), goals against average (1.96 GAA) and save percentage (.938). She finished the 2016-17 season with a 9-13 record. Key newcomers to watch for the Badgers are Katreena Whiteye, Paige Cohoon and Rachel Rochat.
“This season is all about developing Championship minded student-athletes,” said head coach Margot Page. “Strength and conditioning, accountability and building individual and team confidence will be the main things we will focus on. Those things are our ultimate goals. We would like to make playoffs this season and we know the league is always so close, so every game and every shift will count for us.” – Margot Page, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The 2016/17 OUA season was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Guelph Gryphons. After winning the McCaw Cup the previous year, a number of key, elite players graduated. But Rachel Flanagan’s young team saw no reason why they couldn’t match the accomplishments of their champion predecessors – so they just went out and won a second straight McCaw Cup, soundly defeating Nipissing 6-1 in the final. The Gryphons start the 2017/18 season with that team pretty much intact, and a few high-end recruits added to the mix. The anchor is goalie Val Lamenta, the U SPORTS Player of the Year in 2016 and a First Team All-Canadian last season. The fourth-year netminder posted another stunning year, going 15-4 with a 1.39 GAA and .945 save percentage. Flanagan, last year’s OUA Coach of the Year, also welcomes back fourth-year defender Katherine Bailey, who joined Lamenta on the All-Canadian First-Team. The Lucan, ON native chipped in four goals with 10 assists last season but the veteran’s steady, physical play on the blue line is what helped her become one of the best players in the country. The Gryphons’ offence will rely on fourthyear forward Kaitlin Lowy and fifth-year forward Kelly Gribbons. The duo finished third and fifth in the OUA scoring race last year with 29 and 26 points respectively. Lowy led Guelph with 16 goals and was selected for the U SPORTS women’s allstar team that competed at the Hockey Canada Summer Showcase in August.
“We have an experienced group and feel like we’re well balanced throughout the lineup. A lot of our athletes have won at different levels, but there is certainly a hunger and a focus amongst the players to try to once again find a way to get through a tough OUA conference and earn the right to return to nationals this season.” – Rachel Flanagan, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After venturing into the playoffs for the first-time ever, in the 2015-16 season, the Laurentian Voyageurs women’s hockey team will look to carry that momentum forward into 2016-17. The Voyageurs proved they were an OUA threat last season as they jumped from twelfth to eighth in the division, besting a 3-21 record the previous year to an 11-13 regular season finish. The squad will look to catapult themselves deeper into the mix as they shoot for a top-half finish in the division this year. Head coach, Stacey Colarossi, hopes to build off last year’s growth and the team’s first playoff appearance by further developing at both ends of the ice. “We want to continue to be a 60-minute team that contributes all over the ice by committee,” adds Colarossi. The Voyageurs ranked second in the OUA in shots on goal (735) and shots per game (30.6) in 2015-16 and will look to put a few more into the back of the net this year. With the loss of Voyageurs standout, Julie Hebert and the strong post-season play of backstop Emily Toffoli, the Voyageurs will rely on a veteran returning class and some key incoming players as they shoot for another appearance in the post-season. Leading a strong returning class is newly appointed captain, Ellery Veerman. The thirdyear forward played all 24 games for the Voyageurs last year, finishing second on the squad with 11 points, including the gamewinning goal in their first-ever playoff victory over the Gryphons in game two of their firstround series. On the defensive end, the Voyageurs return veteran, Sara Habal who provides stability for the Voyageurs in the back. Habal played all 24 games last season, chipping in with seven points from the blue line. Highlighting the Voyageurs incoming class is Sudbury-native, Kennedy Roy, a product of the Sudbury Lady Wolves system, who will add size to the defensive line for the Voyageurs. The four incoming forwards that have been added to the roster will also be thrown into the mix early as Colarossi hopes they will help generate a 200-foot game with offensive threat and creativity.
“We anticipate building off last year’s growth and the team’s first playoff appearance by continuing to be a by-committee team that competes for 60-minutes all over the ice.” – Stacey Colarossi, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After finishing the 2016-17 season tied for last in the OUA due to a 2-1-17-4 season, with 12 points to their name, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team is ready to shine this season. Head Coach Rick Osborne has added eight new faces to the purple and gold ranks, to bolster the team. Leading the pack of rookies will be defenceman Rebecca Hall (Claremont, Ont.), Emily Di Danelli (Whitby, Ont.) on forward, as well as goaltenders Hannah Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) and Cohen Myers (Shakepeare, Ont.) Moreover, the Hawks will no doubt be looking to the guidance of veteran right-winger, Emily Woodhouse. Coming off her break-out season with Laurier where she lead the team in goals with ten on the season and was named to the 2016 OUA All-Rookie Team, the St. Mary’s Ont. native will be looked upon to lead Laurier’s offensive attack. From the blueline, defenceman Jamie Watson of Georgetown, Ont. will be a valuable asset for the Hawks once again, as she returns for her second season.
“This year marks the finish of a deliberate reload of our roster and the maturity of our second and third year players along with 9 rookies will add a tremendous amount of depth , competitiveness and pride to our group.” – Rick Osborne, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team has continually improved, year-by-year, since they began play in the 2013-14 season. From missing the playoffs, to a first round exit, to the second round and a tough loss in the finals this past season, the Lakers are poised to make a real run this year and have the pieces to do it. A solid returning core, an impressive recruiting class and strength and depth at each position, the Lakers should once again be near the top of the standings and in the conversation when it comes to favourites in the OUA. While their roster in 2016-17 impressed many, they may have actually improved their depth and skill at almost every position, adding a number of provincial team players, along with players who have represented Canada at different levels. The Lakers will be four lines deep, strong on the blueline and have arguably the best goaltending tandem in the OUA – all this could add up to an historic year for the program.
As our first recruits in program history reach the end of their 5 year OUA careers, we look forward to continuing our forward progress both on and off the ice this season. I have to give the players that have been part of our program in our first four seasons a lot of credit. They have created a culture within our program that is driven by hard work and dedication in the classroom, on the ice and when training. Competition is at a very high level in the OUA with any team capable of winning on any given night. We look forward to competing hard on a daily basis, very similar to the way we have done since day one. – Darren Turcotte, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After being the host team of the 2017 women’s hockey national championship, the Gaels are hoping to make another appearance this year in London as the U SPORTS finals are hosted by Western. 2016-17 saw Queen’s with a slow start before putting together an eight-game winning streak during the regular season to finish sixth in the OUA. After forcing a third game in their opening round series with Toronto, Queen’s lost in double overtime to the Varsity Blues as they were eliminated from OUA play. The Gaels had a spot as hosts at the National Championship and nearly upset the No.1 UBC team falling 2-1. Queen’s bounced back with a win over StFX before losing to SMU to finish sixth. The Gaels will look to get back in the hunt in 2017-18 as they see a strong returning core centred around last year’s captain Jessica Wakefield along with scoring threats Addi Halladay and Katrina Manoukarakis. Between the pipes the Gaels have a healthy and now veteran Stephanie Pascal who will head into her fourth year at Queen’s but saw just her first full slate of action in 2016-17 after making her way back from injury. Pascal played the second most minutes in the OUA last season and was a big reason why they nearly upset UBC and defeated StFX at the national championship.
“Successfully hosting the National Championship last year gave our returning players a strong incentive to earn our way back there this season. In addition, we have seven fantastic incoming players that we can count on to make an immediate impact. We are confident that we have the necessary pieces in place to challenge for an OUA championship, but we also know that success won’t come without exceptional hustle, heart, passion, unity and a full commitment to excellence.” – Matt Holmberg, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team is looking to build off a disappointing 201617 season and has added nine new bodies despite losing just four to graduation. That recipe suggests added depth and improvements throughout the lineup. The Rams are looking to return to form that saw them reach the postseason in 201415 for the first time and will have some potent offensive weapons at their disposal. Assistant captain Ailish Forfar is back for her fifth year of eligibility as is third year assistant captain Kryshanda Green. Those two combined for 43% of Ryerson’s goals last season. Joining the two snipers up front is a familiar face in Kayla Karbonik who is back after missing last season. Karbonik was the team’s second-leading scorer the year they went to the playoffs and will be an important player this season. First year forward Brooklyn Gemmill lead the Rams in preseason scoring and looks to make her mark in her first OUA season. The Rams have a fairly young defensive corps but will be lead by assistant captain Alex Rodriguez. The Rams added three freshman defenders in Julie Patricio, Teagan Gartley and Keelin Farren who have all played well in preseason and will fill the holes left by two departing seniors. In goal the Rams return Sydney Authier and Rachel Seeley and have added transfer Fanny Vigeant who brings championship level experience from the Montreal Carabins program. Historically the Rams have faired well in the opening half of their seasons and then faltered down the stretch. This year the Rams will play their deep lineup to keep players fresh and healthy to make a run at the postseason. “With nine new faces and only four graduating players, competition for roles on our team will be fierce. The intent is that it will help to make us a tougher opponent to play against in an already tough OUA conference,” With three of four captains returning and plenty of depth behind them, our team is looking forward to how we will measure up to it.” – Lisa Haley, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team boasts seven new players for the upcoming 2017-18 season. With the graduation of leading scorers Taylor Day and Kristi Riseley, the Varsity Blues will rely on an ‘offence by committee’ mantra to fill the void of graduating 201617 leading scorers Taylor Day and Kristi Riseley. “We have a great group of first-year players,” said Vicky Sunohara, now in her seventh season as Blues bench boss. “They have all had great training camps and shown well in our exhibition games. I’m excited for the immediate impact that they will make this season.” First-year forward Louie Bieman has displayed the leadership qualities of a season veteran, while NCAA transfer Breanna Berndsen and rookie forward Laura Ellis have also turned heads in September. The Blues will look to returning veterans Megan O’Brien, Lauren Straatman and Jessica Robichaud to step up and lead a young forward contingent. Toronto’s blue line will be bolstered by team captain Rebecca Bourgeois and 2016-17 OUA first team all-star Cristine Chao, while rookie Gabrielle De Serres is expected to make an immediate impact as well. Between the pipes, the Blues add Toronto Junior Aeros standout Madeline Albert to bolster a veteran goaltending group, featuring Valencia Yordanov and Katey Teekasingh.

SEASON PREVIEW The 2017-18 season marks the 11th year of UOIT hockey in the OUA. Over the previous 10 seasons, UOIT has always played the “underdog” role but teams across the province are starting to take notice that the Ridgebacks are not to be taken lightly. With nine student-athletes graduating this year, the UOIT coaching staff were busy recruiting in order to fill those holes. Expect the freshmen class to see a lot of ice time through out the year. After just missing out on the playoffs for the last three seasons, Caruana is confident that he has assembled a lineup that is strong enough to send the Ridgebacks back to the postseason.
“With a big turnover, we have a very young group this year. I feel early on we’re going to have some growing pains, but once the girls get a little more familiarized with each other and the league, we should be a very hard working, energetic team that is tough to play against. Our overall goal is to win it all every year but I think getting back into the playoffs is realistic and something we will strive to do. ” – Justin Caruana, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW The Warriors women’s hockey program is coming off their best season in the 16-year history of the program. The Warriors were nationally ranked for the first time ever and went as deep as they ever have in the OUA playoffs, pushing the two-time defending OUA Champs Guelph to the brink, eventually falling in game three of the OUA semifinals. The Warriors graduated eight players, their most ever, but brought in multi-talented recruits for the 2017-18 season. Waterloo also has arguably the most dynamic duo in net with fourth year Stephanie Sluys and second year Taylor Reimer teaming up in the crease. Sluys was the 2015 OUA rookie of the year while Reimer found a spot in the 2017 all-rookie team. With the return of key veterans and a mix of gifted rookies, Waterloo hopes to have the view from atop the OUA standings once again in 2017-18.
“Last season was one of our most memorable and historic in the programs history and we look to continue that momentum into the 201718 season. We have a solid group of returning players that bring poise and leadership to the lineup, mixed in with a very talented bunch of recruits. Our goaltending continues to be a strong point and from the goal crease out we are built to content with the top teams, not only in the OUA but across the country..” – Shaun Regan, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW After a 14-10-0 regular season highlighted by a six-game win streak heading into the playoffs, the Mustangs fell in three games to a Waterloo Warriors team with plenty of veteran leadership in the OUA quarterfinals. Despite their postseason loss, the playoff experience will no doubt prove valuable to a young Mustangs roster who will look to capture a national championship when they host the U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship this March at Thompson Arena. Expected to lead the Mustangs’ roster this season will be Emma Pearson, Alyssa Chiarello, and April Clark, all returning from standout seasons last year. Pearson, who will return for her fifth and final season for the team, will serve once again as the team’s captain. Chiarello on the other hand is heading into just her second year with the Mustangs and will look to pick up where she left off during a breakout rookie season where she was tied for second on the team in goal-scoring. The Kitchener, ON native quickly established herself as an offensive option for the purple and white. Over her 23 games played, Chiarello netted eight goals while assisting on another two throughout the year. Third-year forward April Clark will hope to remain a consistent force on the Mustangs’ offensive attack, as she sat alongside Chiarello with eight goals on the season while assisting on another 12 over the course of 23 games. 6 new players will join the roster this season, with Jessie Sanghe, Olivia Kariunas, Beatrice Dufour, Carmen Lasis, Lindsey O’Neill, and Shailyn Waites all suiting up for the Mustangs for the first time. While Waites may be entering her first season with the Mustangs she’s no stranger to U SPORTS hockey, having previously played with the Windsor Lancers for the 2015-16 season. Five new faces have been added to the Mustangs’ roster coming into the new season, with Jessie Sanghe, Olivia Kariunas, Beatrice Dufour, Carmin Lasis, and Lindsey O’Neill all joining the program. Although she isn’t a new arrival having transferred to Western last season, this year will mark the on-ice debut for Shailyn Waites, who came to the Mustangs from the Windsor Lancers.
“We are very excited to be welcoming five student-athletes to this years recruiting class. This is a dynamic group of athletes that possess a lot of skill and talent for the game. We look forward to integrating this group within our team and culture and will look for them to make an immediate positive impact of the success of our program.”

SEASON PREVIEW Coming off of a disappointing 2016-17 campaign, the Windsor women’s hockey team will try and rebound. After just barely going .500 last season (17-16) and losing four of their top goal scorers, the Lancers are on the rebuild. “This is a rebuilding year for us,” conceded head coach Jim Hunter. Hunter also noted the potential loss of Krystin Lawrence, who led the OUA in goals as one that is tough to overcome. Lawrence is currently out with a knee injury sustained during her OUA soccer season. However, Hunter does have some ideas about how his team can improve. “Last year we played a lot of finesse hockey,” explained Hunter, who went on to speak about the importance of getting back blue collar hockey. In addition to playing a tougher brand of hockey, Hunter pointed that there was room for improvement on the back end of the ice, both with the defensive unit and the goaltending. However, despite the disappointing season, Hunter remains optimistic. The women’s coach explained that among the reasons for optimism was a great recruiting class. “This is a rebuilding year for us. Last year we played a lot of finesse hockey, but it’ll be important to get back to blue collar hockey.” – Jim Hunter, Head Coach

SEASON PREVIEW It’s a big year for the York Lions women’s hockey team as the squad looks to prove itself in the OUA standings this season. The Lions are one of the youngest teams in the conference with 15 players in their first two years in the program, including 10 rookies. After last year’s 12th-place finish, the squad will be icing a number of new players who have the talent to make an immediate difference. “The sky is the limit for them,” said head coach Dan Church about his class of freshmen. “They are going to get better and better every year and I expect a lot out of each of them. They are going to come in and contribute right away, and their play will be an important part of our success this year. The Lions were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the OUA last year and as a result the majority of the new faces are up front. Brooke Anderson, Madison Davey, Courtney Gardiner and Tayler Murphy highlight a stellar rookie class, and each of them were top scorers on their club teams prior to coming to York. That offensive flair will add a new element to the play on the ice, and more scoring will help the Lions in their goal of moving up in the standings. The squad has its 2016-17 leading scorer back in third-year forward Erin Locke, who has tallied 11 points in each of her first two seasons and finished among the team’s top three in scoring both times. Tegan Duncan and Kelsey McHolm will also be counted on for their offence as the Lions will look to a score-by-committee approach. The leader of the back end is team captain Jenna Gray, a competitive player with a physical style who can also chip in offensively. She was fifth in team scoring last season, and her all-around game and tremendous leadership abilities will be a major asset for the squad. Cynthia St-Cyr took a big step as a sophomore last season and she has played in every regular-season game over her first two years. She will have added responsibility on the blueline along with second-year defender Taylor Davison, an OUA all-rookie team member last season. She is an offensive spark plug from the back end and last year finished third in team scoring while tying for 12th in OUA scoring by defenders. Behind them there will be a goaltending battle for the top spot as the Lions feature three young goalies who all have the talent to start. Sophomore Lauren Dubie earned the majority of the minutes last season, ranking fourth in the conference in time played, but she will be pushed by rookie Roxanne Kis, a member of the Swiss national team, and third-year goalie Eva Hall.
“For us it is about competing for 60 minutes every game of the year. We learned that lesson last year, that we can’t take any minutes off or the other team will capitalize. Our goal is to make the playoffs and if we can be consistent and competitive week in and week out, we will end up in the right spot this year.” – Dan Church, Head Coach
