MEN’S playoff recap HUSKIES KNOCK OUT DEFENDING CHAMPION RAVENS

The No. 5 seeded Saskatchewan Huskies shocked the CIS men’s basketball world with an 86-82 upset over the top-ranked and defending champion Carleton Ravens in the semi-final of the 2010 national ranked tournament. Carleton game MVP went to Elliot Thompson (Fredericton, N.B.) who had 23 points. Although the Ravens had four players shoot double figures, it wasn’t enough to overtake the Huskies. The story of the game was three-point shooting. While Saskatchewan went 12-for-31, Carleton only hit two of 17 attempts from long distance. Although Raven Kevin McCleery (Ottawa, Ont.) helped bring his team within three, it wouldn’t be enough to defeat the Huskies.

WILSON CUP THREE-PEAT FOR RAVENS

The No. 1 ranked Ravens won their third consecutive provincial title as they defeated the Windsor Lancers 71-52 in the OUA final presented by Investors Group. The Ravens came out flying in the first with a solid defensive effort and good scoring opportunities to lead with a score of 22-11. In the second quarter, after double and triple teaming All-Star Kevin McCleery the Lancers slowly chipped away at the Ravens’ lead. Despite scoring six less points than the Lancers in the second, the Ravens retained the lead with a score of 37-32. In the second half, Carleton effectively pulled away for the championship win in their home gym.

LANCERS CLAIM OUA WEST TITLE IN MEN’S HOOPS

The Windsor Lancers came out on top at the OUA West Finals in front of their home crowd against a tough Lakehead Thunderwolves team. Both teams hit the court in full force in the first quarter. By the end of the half the Lancers pulled ahead of the Thunderwolves with the help of Isaac Kuon (Missisauga, Ont.). The Lancer scored 17 of his game-high 23 points within the first half. Windsor led with a 17 point gap, a score of 47-30 and came out on fire in the third garnering a 32 point lead. Although the Thunderwolves outscored the Lancers 25-15 in the final ten minutes of the match, Windsor could not be stopped as they captured their second OUA West Championship in four years.

RAVENS ADVANCE TO WILSON CUP

The Carleton Ravens advanced to the 2009-2010 OUA championship with a 78-64 win over the No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees in the much anticipated cross town match up. Ottawa started out with the early lead with their aggressive attack on offence. The Ravens then started going to regular season leading scorer Kevin McCleery who made things happen in the paint. After digging in defensively, the Ravens would only be down by one at the end of the first. In the second the Ravens came out more aggressively on offence scoring 17 points for a 32-23 lead at half. Going into the fourth trailing 60-41, the Gee-Gees would go on a 13-0 run, but that wouldn’t be enough as the Ravens outscored the Gee-Gees 23-18 in the fourth and went on to win the OUA East Final.

WOMEN’S playoff Recap SILVER LINING FOR LANCERS AT CIS WOMENS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS The No. 2 seeded Lancers were beat by the No. 1 ranked Simon Fraser Clan in the CIS championship game with a score of 77-56. It was Simon Frasers fifth title in nine straight championship appearances. The game was close early with a score of 20-18 after the first quarter but the pressure was too much inside the paint where the Clan exploited their size. Down by 12 at half, the Lancers made a valiant effort to regain the lead but it wouldn’t be enough as Simon Fraser re-established their cushion by the end of the third. Rookie Jessica Clemencon (St. Rambert, FR) paced the Lancers with 14 points and was named the CIS rookie of the year. The forward was also the only Lancer named to the all-tournament team. Windsor was the first Ontario team to play for the CIS championship since York lost to Manitoba in 1997. LANCERS CAPTURE SECOND STRAIGHT OUA WOMENS BASKETBALL TITLE A rematch of last year’s finals was set as the Lancers took on the Gee-Gee’s in Ottawa. The Lancers turned in a dominating performance against Ottawa as they overwhelmed the home team with physical defensive play and outstanding offensive execution. Windsor built a 10 point lead early in the first quarter and never looked back. They led 25-12 after one and extended the lead to an incredible 27 points at halftime. The Lancers cruised to an 83-55 victory and their second straight title as OUA champions. Wilson Canada OUA championship player of the game went to Jessica Clemencon (St. Rambert, FR) as she finished with 19 points and added six rebounds. GEE-GEES WIN OUA EAST CROWN The Ottawa Gee-Gees won their third consecutive OUA East title when they defeated cross-town rivals, the Carleton Ravens. The Gee-Gees met the Ravens twice and lost both match ups with scores of 70-46 and 53-40. Ravens fifth-year forward Ines Jelic (London, Ont.) scored in the paint to put her team up but the lead wouldn’t last long. Ottawa would lead by six after the first quarter and at half would be ahead 28-20. In the third, the Ravens woke up and scored ten points in a row taking a two point lead with just over four minutes left in the quarter. It didn’t take long for the Gee-Gee’s to regain the lead. Third-year Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto) helped pick up the momentum by scoring ten points and making big defensive rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Ravens would not be able to take the lead for the rest of the game. Ottawa would win it 59-54. Sunley-Paisley was named the Wilson player of the game and totaled 26 points and 8 rebounds. LANCERS WIN OUA WEST, OFF TO CIS CHAMPIONSHIPS The Windsor Lancers captured their second OUA West crown in a thrilling 66-61 win over the Western Mustangs. Windsor struggled in the first half of the game with a poor 15 percent from field-goal range and both teams traded points for a 10-9 Western lead at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs came out strong in the second quarter with a lead of 30-20 but the Lancers closed the gap at half to make it 35-29. Windsor came alive in the second half taking their first lead of the game going into the fourth. Both teams struggled to score in the fourth as both teams went four minutes without scoring a basket. In the dying minutes of the game, Windsor managed to build up their lead to six points and held off the Mustangs for the win.

OUA TIE BREAKING PROCEDURES TIE BREAKING PROCEDURES: 1. Most league wins (if the teams have played the same number of games). 2. Record in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 3. Point difference in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 4. Record in games within the division. 5. Record in games against common opponents. 6. Record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the standing and continuing in descending order. 7. Point difference in games within the division. 8. Point difference in games against common opponents. 9. Point difference in games against the highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 10. Point difference in games against the second-highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 11. If the tie persists, repeat Step 10 using the other teams in the division in descending order until the tie is broken. 12. Total point difference. 13. Coin toss (if two teams are tied) or drawing of lots (if more than two teams are tied). DEFINITIONS: 1. Record is determined by calculating the winning percentage as follows: • If there are no ties (e.g. Basketball): Wins/Games Played • If wins are worth 2 points (e.g. Football): (Wins + Ties/2)/Games Played • If wins are worth 3 points (e.g. Soccer): (Wins + Ties/3)/Games Played 2. For the purpose of this rule, “division” is defined as the basis on which playoff positions are determined. If playoff positions are determined on a league-wide basis, then the league is to be considered one “division” for the purposes of the rule, regardless of the number of divisions that may exist for scheduling or other purposes. 3. Point difference is calculated by taking the number of points (goals, runs, etc.) score by a team, and subtracting the number of points (goals, runs, etc.) allowed by a team. When point difference is to break a tie between teams who have played an unequal number of games against each other, the difference is NOT weighted to compensate for the number of games played. Any weighting would magnify the differences apparent in the number of games played. NOTE: When the above system separates one or more teams from the other, those teams shall be ranked accordingly and any remaining ties shall be broken by reverting to Step 1 of the appropriate system.
