INTRODUCTION
LETTERS FROM OUA LEADERSHIP PETER BAXTER, PRESIDENT Once again, the immensely talented crop of student-athletes across our Ontario universities showcased why the OUA remains the preeminent conference in Canada. From first-time champions to long-running banner success, the 2017-18 season had it all and we are incredibly proud of all of those who stepped on to the field of play, donned their school colours, and represented our conference provincially, nationally, and even internationally. I want to extend congratulations to all of those student-athletes and teams who capped their on-field efforts in winning fashion. The talent across the OUA sport landscape is immense, showing that the hard work, the dedication, and the skill it takes to reach that championship status is nothing short of spectacular. All of these winning programs should be commended for their efforts in helping bring Banner Season triumphs back to their respective schools. For those programs that continued their winning ways onto the national stage to help bring nine U SPORTS banners to Ontario this season, it has been a true honour to watch you excel at your craft among Canada’s best and brightest. You have done well to help put the OUA’s best foot forward, and we wish you continued success; just as we do for all of our member institutions and our 9,608 student-athletes. It has once again been my pleasure to work alongside so many talented individuals and to play a role in the continued pursuit of athletic and academic excellence in Ontario. We have once again been able to reach new heights this year, and with our continued collaboration, commitment, and overall community, I have no doubt that our efforts, both on and off the field, will place us at the forefron of university sport. Thank you again to everyone who made the 2017-18 season a memorable one, allowing us to not only look ahead to what is in store for next year, but also to look back fondly on these unforgettable accomplishments.

GORD GRACE, CEO It takes a great deal of work to become and remain the preeminent university sport conference in Canada, but Ontario University Athletics has once again shown that the talent we have in the province – both on the field and working diligently behind the scenes – is up to the task. Each of our members, partners, and supporters plays an important role in all that we are able to accomplish, and for those efforts, we extend our sincere gratitude. Because of you, we once again witnessed a year that saw tremendous growth and development in athletics and academics across the province. To our partners, whether you are providing the equipment to help our student-athletes soar or the resources to allow our organization to execute our many events and initiatives, your contributions are integral to what we do. Among all of those groups that contribute to our success, I want to give a special thanks to the Government of Ontario, specifically the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, for their continued funding and overall support toward the advancement of university sport in Ontario. Our conference consistently thrives to make the best possible decisions in everything that we do, and among those who help make that happen are our various committees and staff members. Your guidance and expertise in several critical areas allows us to take the most appropriate steps forward for our membership and helps us manage the day-to-day operations for our student-athletes – past, present, and future – to achieve a winning experience. While the OUA may be made up of 20 different institutions, we truly come together as a single conference. Whether it is on the playing field, in the classroom, or within the community, the 2017-18 season once again proved that in the OUA - We Are ONE.

bearne & nitski among top 8 academic all-canadians
OSVALD NITSKI
KATHERINE BEARNE
After completing her International Baccalaureate diploma at Citadel High School in Halifax, N.S., Bearne chose to attend the University of Ottawa because of its unique combination degree of physics and mathematics. Having begun playing soccer at the age of six, Bearne feels extremely comfortable on the pitch and values highly the role of a teammate. Since her rookie season at uOttawa she has consistently made herself available to teammates for tutoring and academic assistance.

She wants to know more and tries to expand her knowledge and challenge herself because she loves to learn.
In only his second season at the University of Toronto, Osvald Nitski has proven his dominance not only in the pool, but in the classroom as well. After earning both U SPORTS and University of Toronto male Rookie of the Year honours in 2015-16, Nitski reached the national podium for the second consecutive year, earning the individual bronze medal in the 200-metre butterfly in February 2017. The native of Tallinn, Estonia helped the Blues to a silver-medal team finish on the national stage. Academically, Osvald has been recognized on the Dean’s Honour list in each academic term at the University of Toronto’s prestigious mechanical engineering program. A two-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian, Nitski earned the J. Colin Finlayson scholarship, awarded based on academic merit to students who demonstrate leadership in the community. He also received the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering scholarship and won the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) undergraduate student research award.

A three-time OUA All-Star at midfield, Katherine Bearne was also the University of Ottawa’s co-honouree as top Academic All-Canadian in 2016-17 with a perfect 10.0 GPA in the Faculty of Science’s Physics and Mathematics program. Bearne led the Gee-Gees in scoring in 2017 with eight goals in the regular season, setting a new career high. Bearne started 13 games at midfield for Ottawa during the season and also contributed two assists along with superb defensive play. As a rookie, Bearne was a member of the GeeGees’ 2014 OUA championship team.

TRAIN WITH GRAINS with grain farmers of ontario
Thanks to a combination of food, fitness, and friends, OUA - in partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario - crowned the first ever Train with Grains champions – Chris Osei-Kusi (football) from the Queen’s Gaels and Kassidy Nauboris (hockey) from the UOIT Ridgebacks. Osei-Kusi and Nauboris topped the finalist pool of five male and five female participants that took part in the live Train with Grains finale, capping off a two month long contest that started with online video submissions from university students across the province. By gaining the most video views among their competition, the 10 finalists converged at the University of Guelph, wherein a total of $12,000 in grand prizing was awarded to the finalists based on several criteria, including a series of eight fitness-based events, the creation of grain-filled recipes, and a call for engagement on social media.
