UNIVERSITY RUSH ON THE SCORE Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce another season of the University Rush on The Score Television Network, with 10 regular season and playoff games to be broadcast nationally, starting Sept. 11th. The Mustangs kickoff the ninth season of the University Rush on The Score by hosting the McMaster Marauders. McMaster, with its explosive offence, will look to defeat Western for the second straight season at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London, Ont., on national television. Reigning CIS scoring leader Nathan Riva of Lasalle, Ont., has other plans, hoping to help the Mustangs avenge their 2009 Homecoming loss. He is coming off a solid season, scoring 15 regular season touchdowns to lead the nation, which helped Western to advance to its third consecutive Yates Cup in 2009. The Guelph Gryphons, without Justin Dunk at quarterback and featuring new head coach Stu Lang, host back-to-back University Rush games, facing Queen’s on Sept. 18 and then Western on Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. in their annual Homecoming game. The following week, Western will host the Gaels in the Yates Cup rematch. The Gaels, featuring returning receiver Devan Sheahan (Kingston, Ont.) and running back Jimmy Therrien (Montreal), will look to return to Quebec in November to defend the Vanier Cup without the services of Danny Brannagan at quarterback. Western begins the post Michael Faulds era with Donnie Marshall, son of head coach Greg Marshall, at the pivot position. On Oct. 16, Dillon Heap and the Laurier Golden Hawks hope to upend the Gaels at Alumni Stadium in Waterloo, Ont.
Other teams to watch in 2010 include the Ottawa Gee-Gees, featuring quarterback Brad Sinopoli of Peterborough, Ont., the Windsor Lancers, with Sam Malian entering his third season at quarterback, York Lions, featuring new head coach Warren Craney, and Toronto Varsity Blues, led by senior quarterback Andrew Gillis of Markham, Ont. The Score will broadcast six regular season and four playoff games in all, including the 103rd Yates Cup Presented by Pioneer Petroleums in High Definition (HD) on Nov. 13. The OUA is also pleased to announce that both semifinal games will also be broadcast in HD on Nov. 6. Play-by-play announcer Tim Micallef - the 2009 OUA Media Award winner and 2010 CIS Fred Sgambati Media Award winner - returns for a ninth season calling games on Saturdays and will be joined by former OUA and CFL star Mike Morreale who is back in the booth for his third season.
The Week 8 game on Oct. 23 will feature a key game with playoff implications.

OVERTIME Format In the event a game is tied after regulation, an overtime will be used to decide a winner. Since 2002, OUA has used the shoot-out format for overtime. The winning team shall receive two points for the victory, while the losing team will receive no points. This rule was implemented in the 2006 OUA season. FORMAT Each extra period shall consist of two series with both teams beginning their series at the opponent’s 35-yard line. Each team retains the ball during a series until it scores, or there is a turnover or a team fails to make a first down. The team scoring the most points during the extra period(s) shall be decaled the winner. In the event that the game is tied after three extra series, all teams must attempt a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. There are no time outs during overtime play. Each team shall have an equal number of series, except when the defensive team scores on the first possession of a series. In the event of a turnover, the ball remains alive until it is declared dead. However, the team on offence may not have a first and 10 if it regains possession of the ball after a change of team possession. EXAMPLE Team A turns the ball over to Team B, which returns the ball toward Team A’s goal but fumbles the ball and Team A recovers. Once the play is blown dead, Team A’s attempt at scoring ends and Team B takes possession on the 35-yard line to begin their possession. COIN TOSS At the conclusion of regulation, the officials and team captains will meet at the centre of the field for a coin toss. The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options: 1. Offence or defence, with the offence at the opponent’s 35-yard line to start OT. 2. Which end of the field shall be used for both series of that overtime period. The loser of the toss shall exercise the remaining option for the first extra period and shall have the first choice of the two options for subsequent even-numbered extra periods. OUa TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES 1. Most league wins (if the teams have played the same number of games). 2. Record in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 3. Point difference in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 4. Record in games within the division. 5. Record in games against common opponents. 6. Record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the standing and continuing in descending order. 7. Point difference in games within the division. 8. Point difference in games against common opponents. 9. Point difference in games against the highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 10. Point difference in games against the second-highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 11. If the tie persists, repeat Step 10 using the other teams in the division in descending order until the tie is broken. 12. Total point difference. 13. Coin toss (if two teams are tied) or drawing of lots (if more than two teams are tied). DEFINITIONS 1. Record is determined by calculating the winning percentage as follows: (Wins + Ties/2)/Games Played 2. For the purpose of this rule, "division" is defined as the basis on which playoff positions are determined. If playoff positions are determined on a league-wide basis, then the league is to be considered one "division" for the purposes of the rule, regardless of the number of divisions that may exist for scheduling or other purposes. 3. Point difference is calculated by taking the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) scored by a team, and subtracting the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) allowed by a team. When point difference is to break a tie between teams who have played an unequal number of games against each other, the difference is NOT weighted to compensate for the number of games played. Any weighting would magnify the differences apparent in the number of games played. NOTE: When using the above system separates one or more teams from the other, those teams shall be ranked accordingly and any remaining ties shall be broken by reverting to Step 1 of the appropriate system.

Waterloo suspends program for 2010, moving forward with program The University of Waterloo Warriors 2010 season has been suspended from competition due to the scope of banned substance issue with the team and the cloud of suspicion that surrounded the team heading into the 2010 season. With so many uncertainties and an internal review pending, the senior management at the University of Waterloo made the decision to suspend the program from competition in 2010. Moving forward the team is fully expected to return in 2011 with support from senior management and re-instated Waterloo coaching staff following a review which showed no malpractice on the part of the coaches. The Warriors will partake in a series of controlled scrimmages against teams in the OUA to ensure the team is fully prepared entering the 2011 season. The Waterloo athletic department has initiated steps to introduce new educational measures regarding performance enhancing drugs. The involvement of the Taylor Hooton Foundation is a first step, and it is intended that one of the outcomes of this event is that the University of Waterloo will become a Canadian leader in anti-doping education and awareness. As well, the Canadian Football League has endorsed an educational campaign and will have representatives appear at Ontario universities throughout the season to promote the message of drug-free sport.

AWARDS AWARDS
YATES CUP HISTORY Yates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being presented, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, he later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915. From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the top-ranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams (McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date. With the reorganisation of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and 1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions. Entering its 103rd season of competition in 2010, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 28 league titles. The Varsity Blues, winners of the inaugural championship in 1898, stand second with 25 victories. This year’s Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums will take place on Nov. 13 at the home of the highest remaining playoff seed. MATT MORENCIE (WINDSOR) CIS J.P. Metras Trophy OUA J.P. Metras Trophy Morencie is the first Lancer in history to receive the Metras trophy as CIS top down lineman. Over the course of his five-year university career, the human kinetics major started every game since he joined Windsor as a 17-year-old freshman in September of 2005, and has played all five positions on the offensive line, as well as stints at slot back in 2006 and a number of snaps on the defensive line over the past two years. After being named an OUA all-star last season, the 6-foot-3, 290-pound senior made the switch to centre this fall and didn’t miss a beat, earning a spot on the first all-Canadian team. Morencie flourished in his new role that saw him in charge of making all the calls and adjustments for the offensive line. A physical point-of-attack run blocker and a high quality pass protector made Morencie one of the league’s most dominant offensive linemen once again last season. Morencie was one of the big reasons former Windsor teammate Daryl Stephenson graduated in 2008 as the CIS all-time leading rusher with 5,163 career yards. After he was selected 21st overall in the 2009 CFL Entry Draft by the BC Lions, Morencie chose to return to school to finish his degree. He signed with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 2010. T.J. Leeper (QUEEN’S) OUA Russ Jackson Award Nominee Linebacker T.J. Leeper (London, Ont.) of the Queen’s Gaels is OUA’s nominee for the Russ Jackson Award, presented annually by CIS to the player who best exemplifies the attributes of academic achievement, football skill and citizenship. Over the past five seasons Leeper distinguished himself as one of the most intelligent players to ever play at Queen’s. A four-year starter at linebacker, Leeper was a perennial academic all-Canadian who earned a reputation for being a physical tackler who is always in the right position. In 2009 he led the OUA’s topranked defence with 40 tackles (32 solo, 16 assisted), five tackles for loss and one fumble recovery. While completing his degree in life sciences, Leeper was a committed community volunteer. Among his many endeavours, Leeper served as a peer tutor both at Queen’s and with several local high schools. He volunteered with the Kingston General Hospital working with terminally ill patients, and was a regular visitor to the children’s ward. In addition, he was also a leading force in Queen’s Football Reading Heroes, a community outreach program where members of the football team maintain a significant presence in local elementary schools in an effort to inspire grade school children to improve their literacy. .

OUA awards MICHAEL FAULDS (WESTERN) OUA Most Valuable Player Quarterback Michael Faulds was named the 2009 Most Valuable Player of the OUA. The award comes on the heels of a record breaking season, completing 201 passes for a total of 3,033 yards, the most ever in OUA and CIS history. Fifteen of those passes went for touchdowns as the fifth year senior took his team to a 6-2 regular season record. In the process Faulds also set the OUA and CIS career passing record with 10,811 yards. He finishes his illustrious career completing 761 pass attempts for 10,811 yards and 60 touchdowns.
