UNIVERSITY RUSH ON THE SCORE Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football returns to theScore on Sat. Sept. 10, marking the 10th season of University Rush coverage. Again this year, theScore will broadcast six regular season and four playoff games, culminating with the 104th Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy in High Definition (HD) on Nov. 12. It all gets underway in the second week of the OUA season, when the McMaster Marauders play host to the 2010 Yates Cup champion Western Mustangs in a rematch of last season’s semifinal. The then nationally ranked No. 7 Marauders dominated the time of possession battle over the No. 2 Mustangs, but 21 unanswered points by Western gave them a big enough cushion to survive their seven turnovers to hold on for the 34-28 victory, advancing to their fourth straight Yates Cup game. Sept. 17 finds the Guelph Gryphons visiting the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Blues suffered a heart-breaking loss in the first week of 2010 after a Gryphon field goal was kicked with six seconds remaining in the game to give Guelph the twopoint win. This marks Toronto’s first nationally televised game since the 2006 season when they faced the York Lions in the 37th Annual Red & Blue Bowl. The first of two University Rush Homecoming games featured on theScore has McMaster visiting Guelph on Sept. 24. The following week Ottawa will travel to University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont. to take on Wilfrid Laurier. Coach JP Asselin and the Gee-Gees will be without 2010 Hec Crighton winning quarterback Brad Sinopoli (Peterborough, Ont.) when they take on the Golden Hawks on Oct. 1. Last year’s semifinal between the two teams came down to one point with Ottawa narrowly escaping 32-31. After a break for Thanksgiving, Laurier plays host again as 2010’s third and fourth place teams, McMaster and the Golden Hawks, meet in Week 7 on Oct. 15. When the two teams played each other last year the Marauders took the 26-24 decision.

With only a few key losses on either roster, fans can expect another close game. McMaster quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) will need to keep his head up for Laurier’s defence with the departure of Justin Glover, Michael Warner, and Michael Hoy from the Marauders’ offensive line. The Golden Hawks return Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) who led the defence last season with 35 solo tackles, 22 assisted tackles, two sacks, and three interceptions, but will be without 2010 OUA Presidents’ trophy nominee Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who played out his eligibility with the purple and gold. The OUA regular season concludes on Sat. Oct. 22 with five games that will no doubt have playoff implications. Last season, even after the final games were played, a three-way tie had to be broken to determine playoff seeding. Week 8 will feature a key game for post-season positioning. Returning for another season is theScore’s play-by-play announcer Tim Micallef. He’ll be calling all the action and will be joined during each broadcast by former Western football star Donnovan Bennett, who moves up from the sidelines for his rookie season in the booth. Glenn Schiiler will be on the sidelines as University Rush host for the fifth season.

OVERTIME FORMAT In the event a game is tied after regulation, an overtime will be used to decide a winner. Since 2002, OUA has used the shoot-out format for overtime. The winning team shall receive two points for the victory, while the losing team will receive no points. This rule was implemented in the 2006 OUA season. FORMAT Each extra period shall consist of two series with both teams beginning their series at the opponent’s 35-yard line. Each team retains the ball during a series until it scores, or there is a turnover or a team fails to make a first down. The team scoring the most points during the extra period(s) shall be declared the winner. In the event that the game is tied after three extra series, all teams must attempt a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. There are no time outs during overtime play. Each team shall have an equal number of series, except when the defensive team scores on the first possession of a series. In the event of a turnover, the ball remains alive until it is declared dead. However, the team on offence may not have a first and 10 if it regains possession of the ball after a change of team possession. EXAMPLE Team A turns the ball over to Team B, which returns the ball toward Team A’s goal but fumbles the ball and Team A recovers. Once the play is blown dead, Team A’s attempt at scoring ends and Team B takes possession on the 35-yard line to begin their possession. COIN TOSS At the conclusion of regulation, the officials and team captains will meet at the centre of the field for a coin toss. The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options: 1. Offence or defence, with the offence at the opponent’s 35-yard line to start OT. 2. Which end of the field shall be used for both series of that overtime period. The loser of the toss shall exercise the remaining option for the first extra period and shall have the first choice of the two options for subsequent even-numbered extra periods. OUA TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES 1. Most league wins (if the teams have played the same number of games). 2. Record in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 3. Point difference in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 4. Record in games within the division. 5. Record in games against common opponents. 6. Record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the standing and continuing in descending order. 7. Point difference in games within the division. 8. Point difference in games against common opponents. 9. Point difference in games against the highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 10. Point difference in games against the second-highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 11. If the tie persists, repeat Step 10 using the other teams in the division in descending order until the tie is broken. 12. Total point difference. 13. Coin toss (if two teams are tied) or drawing of lots (if more than two teams are tied). DEFINITIONS 1. Record is determined by calculating the winning percentage as follows: (Wins + Ties/2)/Games Played 2. For the purpose of this rule, "division" is defined as the basis on which playoff positions are determined. If playoff positions are determined on a league-wide basis, then the league is to be considered one "division" for the purposes of the rule, regardless of the number of divisions that may exist for scheduling or other purposes. 3. Point difference is calculated by taking the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) scored by a team, and subtracting the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) allowed by a team. When point difference is to break a tie between teams who have played an unequal number of games against each other, the difference is NOT weighted to compensate for the number of games played. Any weighting would magnify the differences apparent in the number of games played.
NOTE: When using the above system separates one or more teams from the other, those teams shall be ranked accordingly and any remaining ties shall be broken by reverting to Step 1 of the appropriate system.

AWARDS AWARDS
YATES CUP HISTORY Yates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being presented, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, he later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915. From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the top-ranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams (McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date. With the reorganisation of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and 1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions. Entering its 104th season of competition in 2011, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 29 league titles. OUA AWARDS BRAD SINOPOLI (OTTAWA) CIS Hec Crighton Trophy Winner OUA Most Valuable Player Quarterback Brad Sinopoli was no doubt the most valuable of the 2010 football season after leading his Gee-Gees to a first place finish in the regular season, a berth in the Yates Cup final, and finishing first in a number of categories in all of Canada. Sinopoli averaged 344.5 yards per game and completed 184 of 301 passes, good for a 61 per cent passing average. His 2,756 yards and 22 touchdowns helped Ottawa become the best offence in Ontario in 2010. The quarterback also knows how to run the ball, leading Ottawa in rushing, covering 534 yards in 42 attempts and scored one touchdown on the ground. He now sits sixth in the CIS record book for most passing yards in a single season. Sinopoli finished first in OUA and CIS for passing yards, touchdown passes and completions for 2010 and is arguably the best quarterback in the country. Brad is only the sixth Gee-Gee to win the MVP award and he was named a First-Team All-Star for the first time in his career.
MATT O’DONNELL (QUEEN’S) OUA J.P. Metras Trophy Matt O’Donnell is the fifth Gael in history to receive the Metras trophy as CIS top down lineman. As the biggest player in college football, standing at 6’10’’ and weighing in at 329 lbs., his size alone makes him one of the most imposing tackles in the CIS. O’Donnell was selected as a CIS First-Team All-Canadian last year with his play as a junior for Queen’s. O’Donnell’s ability as a pass protector on the left side puts him in a class all by himself and his presence on perimeter run plays is undeniable. His nasty disposition for an offensive lineman is in very high demand at the highest levels of football.

OUA AWARDS DILLON HEAP (LAURIER) OUA Russ Jackson Award Nominee This year OUA Russ Jackson Award nominee is Golden Hawks Receiver Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) of the Laurier Golden Hawks. The fourth-year has broke a number of school records over his career with the Hawks, and finished the 2010 regular season with 41 receptions, good for 466 yards and five touchdowns. He is among the top of his class in Laurier’s business program and has twice been named a CIS Academic All-Canadian. Last year, he received Laurier’s 2009-10 Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award for his achievements in both the classroom and on the field. He does extensive work within the community of Waterloo and completed a two year mission in Concepcion, Chile. Heap also serves as the executive secretary for President James A. McBride of the Kitchener Ontario Stake, teaches Sunday school at the branch, and is the president of the Latter-Day Saints Association at Wilfrid Laurier. Before this, Dillon also served as the President of Elders Quorum in the Kitchener 3rd Young Single Adult Branch, leading 20 peers for a year. SAM SABOURIN (QUEEN’S) OUA Norm Marshall Trophy Queen’s Gaels freshman Freshman Sam Sabourin (Stittsville, Ont.) earned the Norm Marshall award for rookie of the year. Sabourin made a seamless transition into OUA becoming a starter on defence and special teams in all eight games in the regular season for the Gaels. Sabourin set a number of Queen’s school records in 2010 including most tackles in a season with 64, most tackles for loss with nine, most solo tackles in a season with 50 and most tackles in a single game with 13. Sam was ranked third on the CIS list for tackles in the regular season and had two sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles. The rookie is only the third Gael to win the award, the last being famed quarterback Danny Brannagan in 2005.

OUA AWARDS GREG MARSHALL (WESTERN) OUA Coach of the Year presented by Centaur Products Inc. Western Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall is the Dave “Tuffy” Knight Award winner as OUA coach of the year, presented by Centaur Products, Inc. as the seventh head coach of the Western Mustangs, Marshall has led Western to four Yates Cup appearances, having won three of those four contests. This year Marshall led the Mustangs to a 7-1 regular season record and the Yates Cup. This brings his career regular season record with Western is 24-8. His consistency to lead his teams to Yates Cup appearances is tremendous. This is Marshall’s third OUA Coach of the Year award.
GIANCARLO RAPANARO (LAURIER) OUA President’s Trophy Winner Niagara Falls resident Giancarlo Rapanaro was the OUA President’s Trophy winner. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers draft pick returned to Laurier for his fifth and final year. The veteran linebacker recorded 23 solo tackles and nine assisted tackle this season. Rapanaro also picked off quarterbacks twice this year and ran them back for a total of 90 yards. The addition of his two sacks in 2010 ranks Rapanaro second on the all-time career sacks list for Laurier with 16.5. He sits fifth-place all-time at Laurier with 130.5 career tackles and is the ninth Hawk to receive the President’s Trophy.
JERIMY HIPPERSON (WESTERN) OUA Dalt White Trophy Jerimy Hipperson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) ran for 162 yards on 18 carries and added one touchdown to earn the Dalt White Trophy as Yates Cup MVP. Hipperson’s performance helped the Western Mustangs defeat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 26-25 to capture a record 29th Yates Cup in school history and third in the past four seasons.
