UNIVERSITY RUSH ON THE SCORE Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football returns to theScore on Saturday, September 8, marking the 11th season of University Rush coverage. theScore will broadcast six regular season and four playoff games, all leading up to the 105th Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy on November 10, featuring the belairdirect halftime show. The University Rush season kicks off under the lights as the Queen’s Gaels travel to Waterloo to take on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, September 8 at 8 p.m. The second week clash marks the first University Rush game since 2008 to be played at night. In the 2011 quarter-final the Gaels were responsible for ending the Golden Hawks season in a low scoring affair that was decided on a fourth-quarter rushing touchdown. The 14-10 decision sent Coach Sheahan and his tri-coloured squad into the Yates Cup semifinal against eventual Vanier Cup winner McMaster. Queen’s returns to the schedule the following Saturday when they host the Western Mustangs at Richardson Stadium. The Gaels shut out the Mustangs 37-0 last season in week eight, a game that was essentially meaningless for the guaranteed first place ‘Stangs. The lopsided victory marked the first time since 1973 that Western University football had been held scoreless. But when they meet on September 15, the game will be anything but insignificant and University Rush fans should expect an exciting tilt showcasing one of the oldest rivalries in the league. The first of three University Rush Homecoming games featured on theScore has Toronto visiting Guelph in the new and improved Alumni Stadium on Saturday, September 22. The following week McMaster travels to London to take on the Western Mustangs in a rematch of the 104th Yates Cup final. Following a break for Thanksgiving, the Marauders return to theScore and play host to 2011 upstart Windsor on Saturday, October 13. Toronto managed a surprise 21-12 victory over the visiting Guelph Gryphons last season at Varsity Stadium, but this year the tables will be turned. The Varsity Blues will travel into the belly of the beast, taking on the Gryphons in front of a hostile Homecoming crowd. OUA football fans should mark September 29th on their calendars as the most highly anticipated matchup of 2012 comes live to University Rush on theScore. Pioneer Energy Male Athlete of the Year Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) and the McMaster Marauders

are coming off a Cinderella season in 2011 that saw them capture the first national title in school history. With limited key losses on the roster, McMaster is looking for a repeat performance. The Mustangs and Marauders split results in 2011. The Mustangs muscled their way to a 48-21 win in week two before the Marauders came away with a 41-19 win in the 104th Yates Cup. Following the Thanksgiving break, 2011 OUA Coach of the Year Joe D’Amore and the Windsor Lancers will travel to Hamilton to take on McMaster in front of a packed Homecoming crowd. Though the Lancers didn’t win a Vanier Cup like their maroon opponents, 2011 was a banner year for the program. The Lancers posted a 5-3 record and had two post season appearances, which was their most successful season since 2006. Windsor gave McMaster trouble the last time these two teams met and the Marauders were lucky to come away with a two point win. Fans should tune in live to see the two best quarterbacks OUA has to offer as Windsor’s Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) goes up against Quinlan. The OUA regular season concludes on Saturday, October 20 with five games that will no doubt have playoff implications. Week eight will feature a key game for post-season positioning, and will be announced at a later date. OUA alum Donnovan Bennett returns to the booth for his second season, and this year he’ll be joined by a new face as theScore’s Simon Bennett takes over the play-by play calls. theScore’s Laura Diakun and Andy Baechler will kick off and wrap up each game from the studio. The pair will cover the upcoming matchup, and discuss OUA and CIS football action across the country. Paul Brothers will complete the on air theScore crew on the sidelines in his first season as University Rush host.

OVERTIME Format In the event a game is tied after regulation, an overtime will be used to decide a winner. Since 2002, OUA has used the shoot-out format for overtime. The winning team shall receive two points for the victory, while the losing team will receive no points. This rule was implemented in the 2006 OUA season. FORMAT Each extra period shall consist of two series with both teams beginning their series at the opponent’s 35-yard line. Each team retains the ball during a series until it scores, or there is a turnover or a team fails to make a first down. The team scoring the most points during the extra period(s) shall be declared the winner. In the event that the game is tied after three extra series, all teams must attempt a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. There are no time outs during overtime play. Each team shall have an equal number of series, except when the defensive team scores on the first possession of a series. In the event of a turnover, the ball remains alive until it is declared dead. However, the team on offence may not have a first and 10 if it regains possession of the ball after a change of team possession. EXAMPLE Team A turns the ball over to Team B, which returns the ball toward Team A’s goal but fumbles the ball and Team A recovers. Once the play is blown dead, Team A’s attempt at scoring ends and Team B takes possession on the 35-yard line to begin their possession. COIN TOSS At the conclusion of regulation, the officials and team captains will meet at the centre of the field for a coin toss. The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options: 1. Offence or defence, with the offence at the opponent’s 35-yard line to start OT. 2. Which end of the field shall be used for both series of that overtime period. The loser of the toss shall exercise the remaining option for the first extra period and shall have the first choice of the two options for subsequent even-numbered extra periods. OUa TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES 1. Most league wins (if the teams have played the same number of games). 2. Record in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 3. Point difference in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 4. Record in games within the division. 5. Record in games against common opponents. 6. Record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the standing and continuing in descending order. 7. Point difference in games within the division. 8. Point difference in games against common opponents. 9. Point difference in games against the highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 10. Point difference in games against the second-highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 11. If the tie persists, repeat Step 10 using the other teams in the division in descending order until the tie is broken. 12. Total point difference. 13. Coin toss (if two teams are tied) or drawing of lots (if more than two teams are tied). DEFINITIONS 1. Record is determined by calculating the winning percentage as follows: (Wins + Ties/2)/Games Played 2. For the purpose of this rule, "division" is defined as the basis on which playoff positions are determined. If playoff positions are determined on a league-wide basis, then the league is to be considered one "division" for the purposes of the rule, regardless of the number of divisions that may exist for scheduling or other purposes. 3. Point difference is calculated by taking the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) scored by a team, and subtracting the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) allowed by a team. When point difference is to break a tie between teams who have played an unequal number of games against each other, the difference is NOT weighted to compensate for the number of games played. Any weighting would magnify the differences apparent in the number of games played. NOTE: When using the above system separates one or more teams from the other, those teams shall be ranked accordingly and any remaining ties shall be broken by reverting to Step 1 of the appropriate system.

AWARDS AWARDS

YATES CUP HISTORY Yates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being presented, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, he later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915. From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the top-ranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams (McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date. With the reorganisation of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and 1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions. Entering its 105th season of competition in 2012, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 29 league titles. The Varsity Blues, winners of the inaugural championship in 1898, stand second with 25 victories. This year’s Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy will take place on Nov. 10 at the home of the highest remaining playoff seed. OUA AWARDS MICHAEL DICROCE (MCMASTER) OUA Most Valuable Player The McMaster wide receiver is a dynamic multi-purpose offensive player who was a threat to score every time he touched the football. DiCroce led the nation in receiving yards, accumulating 904 yards on 48 catches for an outstanding per catch average of 18.8 yards. Among those 48 catches were six touchdown receptions. DiCroce was also a weapon for the Marauders’ ground game, rushing 18 times for 179 yards, averaging nearly a first down per rush at 9.9 yards per carry. He was also a factor in special teams, returning five punts for 61 yards. The Hamilton native and third year player was a model of consistency in 2011, racking up at least four catches in every conference game and scoring touchdowns in six of the Marauders’ eight games. With the combination of speed and athleticism, DiCroce commands special attention from opposing defences. DiCroce is the first Marauder to take home the MVP trophy since Jesse Lumsden did so in 2004 and first receiver since Andy Fantuz of Western in 2005. OSIE UKWUOMA (QUEEN’S) OUA J.P. Metras Trophy After taking a year away from OUA football, Queen’s defensive tackle Osie Ukwuoma (Mississauga, Ont.) returned in a big way and earned the J.P. Metras trophy as the lineman of the year. The award was Ukwuoma’s second honour after being named the top lineman in 2008. Ukwuoma was a major contributing factor to the Gaels not allowing a rushing touchdown all season. The 6-3, 275 pound Ukwuoma had one of his best statistical seasons, accumulating 27 total tackles, including 24 solo tackles. He led the conference with 13 tackles for loss and six sacks, and also had one interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. The second-year law student is just the third player to ever repeat as the top lineman in league history.

OUA awards DILLON HEAP (LAURIER) OUA Russ Jackson Award Nominee For the second straight year, OUA’s nominee for the Russ Jackson award was Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) of the Laurier Golden Hawks, and in 2011 he took home the national honour. The fifth year player finished the regular season with 40 receptions for 625 yards and three touchdowns. Heap excelled not just on the offence, but also on special teams. He had 40 punt returns for 458 yards and closed his career with the OUA’s all-time punt return yardage record with 2,113 yards. With several school records to his credit, Heap also excels academically, posting a 10.07 cumulative GPA and has received Laurier’s Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award as the top academic male athlete. Additionally, Heap continued his dedication to the Waterloo community in 2011. He served as the executive secretary for President James A. McBride of the Kitchener Ontario Stake, teaching Sunday school at the branch, and acting as president of the Latter-Day Saints Association at Laurier. He has also served as the President of Elders Quorum in the Kitchener 3rd Young Single Adult Branch. TYLER VARGA (WESTERN) OUA Norm Marshall Trophy Western running back Tyler Varga burst onto the OUA scene and earned the 2011 Norm Marshall trophy as the top rookie. The Kitchener, Ont. native was also awarded the CIS Peter Gorman trophy. Standing at 5-10 and 218 pounds, Varga’s presence on the football field was undeniable and his work ethic inspiring. The rookie led the OUA and CIS in rushing touchdowns with 15 in seven games and added two more in the Mustangs’ first postseason game. He made a number of extraordinary runs, busting through holes and leaping and twisting his way out of would-be tackles. His 793 rushing yards in the regular season was good for fifth overall in the CIS and second in the OUA. Varga is the first Mustang to be named rookie of the year since 2003.

OUA AWARDS JOE D’AMORE (WINDSOR) OUA Dave “Tuffy” Knight Award presented by Centaur Products Inc. In his first season as the head coach of the Windsor Lancers, and first season as a CIS head coach, Joe D’Amore took home the 2012 Dave “Tuffy” Knight coach of the year award. A former Lancers recruiting coordinator and receivers coach, D’Amore stepped into the head coach position and led the Lancers to their most successful season since 2006. With a 5-3 regular season record, Windsor finished fifth and claimed a postseason berth for the first time in five seasons.

RYAN CHMIELEWSKI (MCMASTER) OUA President’s Trophy Winner The heart and soul of the McMaster defence, Ryan Chmielewski (Niagara Falls, Ont.) was a stalwart at the linebacker position since arriving on the Hamilton campus. In 2011, he selflessly moved from the middle linebacker spot to the outside to improve team defence, leading the Marauders with 38 solo tackles and four sacks. The pride of St. Catharines, Ont. is a two-time defensive MVP for McMaster and served as team captain this season. He began his career winning the 2007 OUA rookie of the year award and has been a first-team all-star each year since.

KYLE QUINLAN (MCMASTER) OUA Dalt White Trophy Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) threw four touchdown passes to lift the Marauders to a 41-19 victory in the 104th Yates Cup. Quinlan completed 16 of 24 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns. He was also a driving force in the McMaster ground game, amassing 103 yards on 10 carries.
