OVERTIME Format In the event a game is tied after regulation, an overtime will be used to decide a winner. Since 2002, OUA has used the shoot-out format for overtime. The winning team shall receive two points for the victory, while the losing team will receive no points. This rule was implemented in the 2006 OUA season. FORMAT Each extra period shall consist of two series with both teams beginning their series at the opponent’s 35-yard line. Each team retains the ball during a series until it scores, or there is a turnover or a team fails to make a first down. The team scoring the most points during the extra period(s) shall be declared the winner. In the event that the game is tied after three extra series, both teams must attempt a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. There are no time outs during overtime play. Each team shall have an equal number of series, except when the defensive team scores on the first possession of a series. In the event of a turnover, the ball remains alive until it is declared dead. However, the team on offence may not have a first and 10 if it regains possession of the ball after a change of team possession. EXAMPLE Team A turns the ball over to Team B, which returns the ball toward Team A’s goal but fumbles the ball and Team A recovers. Once the play is blown dead, Team A’s attempt at scoring ends and Team B takes possession on the 35-yard line to begin their possession. COIN TOSS At the conclusion of regulation, the officials and team captains will meet at the centre of the field for a coin toss. The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options: 1. Offence or defence, with the offence at the opponent’s 35-yard line to start OT. 2. Which end of the field shall be used for both series of that overtime period. The loser of the toss shall exercise the remaining option for the first extra period and shall have the first choice of the two options for subsequent even-numbered extra periods. OUa TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES 1. Most league wins (if the teams have played the same number of games). 2. Record in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). 3. Point difference in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once). Total point difference will not exceed 33+/-points per OUA football contest. 4. Record in games within the division. 5. Record in games against common opponents. 6. Record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the standing and continuing in descending order. 7. Point difference in games within the division. 8. Point difference in games against common opponents. 9. Point difference in games against the highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 10. Point difference in games against the second-highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie. 11. If the tie persists, repeat Step 10 using the other teams in the division in descending order until the tie is broken. 12. Total point difference. 13. Coin toss (if two teams are tied) or drawing of lots (if more than two teams are tied). DEFINITIONS 1. Record is determined by calculating the winning percentage as follows: (Wins + Ties/2)/Games Played 2. For the purpose of this rule, "division" is defined as the basis on which playoff positions are determined. If playoff positions are determined on a league-wide basis, then the league is to be considered one "division" for the purposes of the rule, regardless of the number of divisions that may exist for scheduling or other purposes. 3. Point difference is calculated by taking the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) scored by a team, and subtracting the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) allowed by a team. When point difference is to break a tie between teams who have played an unequal number of games against each other, the difference is NOT weighted to compensate for the number of games played. Any weighting would magnify the differences apparent in the number of games played. NOTE: When using the above system separates one or more teams from the other, those teams shall be ranked accordingly and any remaining ties shall be broken by reverting to Step 1 of the appropriate system.

Did you know... There are two Jordan Deneau’s who are both currently heading into their second year of eligibility with the Lancers. Both are 6’2’’ and play on the defensive side of the ball. However, they are not related. AWARDS AWARDS

YATES CUP HISTORY Yates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being presented, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, he later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915. From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the top-ranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams (McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date. With the reorganisation of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and 1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions. Entering its 106th season of competition in 2013, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 29 league titles. The Varsity Blues, winners of the inaugural championship in 1898, stand second with 25 victories. This year’s Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy will take place on Nov. 9 at the home of the highest remaining playoff seed. OUA AWARDS KYLE QUINLAN (MCMASTER) OUA Most Valuable Player Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont. spent the 2012 OUA season re-writing the McMaster record book as he led the Marauders to an undefeated league record. In his final year of eligibility, Quinlan set a new OUA record by completing 162 of 235 pass attempts for a completion percentage of 69%. He passed for 2,457 yards for a league leading 10.46 yards per completion average and also led the OUA with 19 touchdown tosses, compared to only two interceptions. Quinlan also displayed impressive rushing ability, and was McMaster’s leading rusher with 550 yards on 55 carries for a 10-yard per carry average, while scoring seven touchdowns on the ground. He now holds McMaster single season records for most completions, most yards passing and most touchdown passes, as well as the Marauder career record for touchdown passes and was named a first team all-star. He is only the third Marauder to take home the prestigious award

Quinlan went on to win the 2012 Hec Crighton Trophy and received the Doug Mitchell Trophy as CIS male athlete of the year.

BEN D’AGULIAR (MCMASTER) OUA J.P. Metras Trophy Ben D’Aguilar of Hamilton, Ont. spent his fifth year of eligiblity terrorizing OUA quarterbacks as the top pass rusher on the league-leading McMaster defence. D’Aguilar set a single season CIS record for sacks with 12.5 over eight league games. He also registered 28 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble, and one pass break-up. For his outstanding performance, D’Aguilar also merited the CIS J.P. Metras Trophy as most outstanding down lineman. In the first prospect list posted by the CFL scouting combine in September, D’Aguilar was ranked as the 10th best prospect for the 2013 CFL Draft. On May 6, 2013, D’Aguilar was selected 13th overall in the CFL draft by the Calgary Stampeders.

OUA awards ZACH ANDROSCHUK (GUELPH) OUA Russ Jackson Award Nominee Zach Androschuk of Sarnia, Ont. has always excelled both on the football field as well as in the classroom. On the field, the 6-foot-1, 195lb defensive back was a two-year captain of the special teams unit and a fouryear starter. In his fifth OUA season, he registered 30.5 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. A four-time Academic All-Canadian, he graduated with distinction from Biomedical Sciences in the spring of 2012 and was accepted to the University of Western Ontario Medical School. Androschuk spent the 2012 football season completing a neuroscience minor. Androschuk was very active in his community and was instrumental in organizing the first “Guelph Wheels in Action”, a spinal cord injury fundraiser held at the University of Guelph. He also volunteered as a Brain Day Director, which is an outreach initiative where university students educate youth about brain and spinal cord anatomy. Androschuk was also involved with St. Joseph’s Hospital and Believe to Achieve. He went on receive the 2013 CIS Russ Jackson Award. YANNICK HARROU (WESTERN) OUA Norm Marshall Trophy For the second straight season a member of the Western Mustangs took home top OUA rookie honours. A native of Gatineau, Quebec, Yannick Harou had an impressive freshman season with Western, finishing in the top 10 for rushing yards and scoring four touchdowns. Harou was called upon late in the season to fill in for injured CIS-leading rusher Garret Sanvido. He proved to be a more than adequate replacement, rushing for 133 yards and scoring two touchdowns in Western’s quarterfinal victory over the Windsor Lancers. A product of the same St. Andrew’s College Saints program that produced Mustang legend Michael Faulds, Harou was one of the top offensive recruits in the nation after two record-breaking seasons where he earned team MVP honours in both 2010 and 2011.

OUA AWARDS STEFAN PTASZEK (MCMASTER) OUA Dave “Tuffy” Knight Award presented by Centaur Products Inc. Stefan Ptaszek guided the Marauders to a perfect 8 and 0 mark in OUA regular season play in his seventh season with the team. Ptaszek and the Marauders went on to win the 105th Yates Cup and decisively defeated the Calgary Dinos in the Mitchell Bowl before losing a 2011 Vanier Cup rematch against the Laval Rouge et Or. Ptaszek has three Vanier Cups to his name; as an athlete at Laurier (1991), an assistant coach at Laurier (2005) and as a head coach at McMaster (2011). ARAM EISHO (MCMASTER) OUA President’s Trophy Winner Aram Eisho of Hamilton, Ont. enjoyed a sensational year in 2012, leading the McMaster defence from his middle linebacker position. Eisho registered a total of 52.5 tackles in eight league games and led the OUA in solo tackles with 50. He also had three quarterback sacks. Behind Eisho’s strong play, McMaster allowed the fewest yards rushing in the OUA in 2012, and had the top-ranked defence in overall yardage allowed and the fewest points scored against. The second-year athlete is the fourth Marauder to take home the President’s Award and was also named a first team all-star. SHANE BEATON (MCMASTER) OUA Dalt White Trophy McMaster linebacker Shane Beaton, of Brampton, Ont., took home the Dalt White Trophy as MVP of the 2012 Yates Cup game, claiming 10 solo tackles, including three tackles for a loss, and one pass breakup.
