Ontario Football Alliance is looking forward to continuing to build on our strong partnership with the Ontario University Athletics to further the development of football in the province. In 2010 we worked together helping to develop youth skills and expose them to OUA football by running Punt, Pass, Kick contests across the province at the different universities. Currently we are vey excited to be working with the OUA to present Football Day in Toronto at the University of Toronto Varsity Blue's Football Game on September 17th.

Want to find out who will be playing for the Yates Cup this year? Look at which programs have elite quarterbacks. The Canadian brand of football truly is a quarterback driven game and nowhere has that been more clear than in OUA. Not only has it produced the best young signal callers year in and year out, it has produced some of the country’s most dominant offensive teams. There is, without question, a positive correlation between top level quarterbacking and highly competitive football teams. The same association cannot be made year in and year out about any other position on the football field. Case in point, some of the best amateur receivers and running backs to ever grace field turf have yet to hoist the Yates Cup, yet every year the top QB’s can be found in a position to win it all. I’ve come to the realization that if you don’t have a quarterback, it doesn’t matter who’s in your backfield, a challenging thing to admit given that I’m a proud former running back. A few facts for you: A year ago Brad Sinopoli led the nation in passing and won the Hec Crighton as the country’s best player. He took his team to the Yates Cup where he faced off against Donnie Marshall. Though he finished fourth in the conference in passing, Marshall also finished third in the conference in rushing so his positive impact on his offence is clear. Former Ottawa QB Brad Sinopoli

QB Connection
In 2009, Western’s Mike Faulds and Queen’s Danny Brannagan were one and two respectively in the country in passing yards, total offence, and every important passing statistic. They finished their careers as fifth year seniors, first and second in all-time passing yards. They met in the most thrilling Yates Cup in recent memory. In 2008, Faulds and Ottawa’s Josh Sacobie were first and fifth in the country in passing yards respectively. Former Western QB Michael Faulds They were one and two in the conference in completion percentage. They met in the Yates Cup. In 2007 Faulds finished third in the country in passing. Justin Dunk finished third in the country in touchdown passes. Despite the fact that their schools started the playoffs on the road ranked fifth and sixth they also met in the Yates Cup. I don’t expect this year will be any different. The preseason favourites to meet in the Yates Cup are the McMaster Marauders and the Western Mustangs, both led by Hec Crighton preseason candidates - Kyle Quinlan and Marshall. They take the mantle from Sinopoli as the conference’s dynamic, dual-threat quarterbacks. Despite operating two totally different offenses both have proven they can beat you on the ground and in the air. I believe having quarterbacks of that quality is part of the reason McMaster and Western had the best recruiting classes this offseason. Players recognize the fact that above all else, having an elite quarterback will put them in a position to be

competitive. Having a great QB on the roster also causes issues for opposing teams - defensive coordinators and their players spend time planning for that specific player, leaving less time to scout the remaining skill players. Great quarterbacks who can make plays with their legs like Marshall and Quinlan have the ability to extend drives and keep their defense rested. Even if a defense struggles early in a game they can stay aggressive knowing that their pivot can rally them back into the contest. Even the teams who didn’t have great recruiting classes until late in the process, like Guelph and Laurier, ended up being successful because of their quarterback. Remaining unsigned players recognized the fact that quarterback Jazz Lindsey was heading to Guelph and pivots Julien John and Greg Nyhof were heading to Laurier. Those incoming freshman knew that they’d have a chance to grow and develop with potential all-stars at the game’s biggest position for the rest of their careers. Those types of quarterbacks can be program changers. During my preseason visit to OUA training camps, I was amazed at how in control of the proceedings Kyle Quinlan was. In the film room he was pointing out route adjustments to receivers. Similarly, during my visit to Western, Donnie Former Queen’s QB Danny Brannagan
Page 14

QB Connection
Marshall was without a voice because he was constantly barking out orders to the first team offense getting the team in line. It’s a great asset for teams when their leader is capable of being a liaison from the coaching staff to the players and vice versa. Last year at this time Laurier’s QB Shane Kelly was an American transfer student and a virtual newcomer to his teammates and the Canadian game. Now instead of just two weeks under his belt, he’s benefitted from two additional full camps (spring 2010 and preseason 2011). Kelly’s offseason was spent training in the US with former NCAA collegiate quarterbacks preparing for the NFL season. If his level of familiarity and confidence catches up with his physical talent he may propel himself and his program into the Yates Cup equation. Last year, Guelph’s Chris Rossetti ended his season on crutches due to an injury he sustained in the quarterfinals. With a clean bill of health, an offseason spent interning with the Toronto Argos and arguably the best receiving core in the OUA at his disposal, Rossetti might be able to fulfill the potential former Guelph head coach and current Winnipeg Blue Bombers Special Team coordinator Kyle Walters saw in him when he was one of the most sought after high school quarterbacks in the country. If you want to win in fantasy football start at the running back position. If you want to predict who will live out every OUA player’s fantasy and kiss the oldest football trophy in North America, look no further than the quarterback. One thing I can guarantee is that a truly elite quarterback will finish the 2011 season on top. At this point, I just can’t say which one.

104th Yates Cup
North America’s Oldest Trophy
Y
ates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being presented, predating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, and later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915. From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the topranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams Page 16
(McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date. With the reorganization of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions. Entering its 104th season of competition in 2011, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 29 league titles. The Varsity Blues, winners of the inaugural championship in 1898, stand second with 25 victories. This year’s Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy will take place on Nov. 12 at the home of the highest remaining playoff seed.

Gino Fracas
Story by Elisa Mitton, photos from the University of Windsor
Legendary Lancer Football coach Gino Fracas has become one of the first individuals to be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in the Canadian university game. After decades of inducting only professional players and builders, the Hall is going back to honouring individuals from the amateur ranks. Based on recommendations from its amateur sub-committee, one amateur player and one builder could be inducted annually. Fracas, who passed away in 2009 at the age of 79, will be inducted posthumously as a builder. One of the most well known and well respected individuals in Canadian Football history, Gino coached at the University of Windsor for 19 years from 1968 to 1986 where he founded the Lancer Football program. Although Fracas earned the nod into the Hall for his coaching accomplishments, he also had a spectacular playing career. Born on April 28, 1930, Fracas was an all-city halfback at Assumption High School and helped lead them to a provincial championship in 1948 and 1949. At the University of Western Ontario, he was a three-time all-star and two-time Yates Cup champion between 1951 and 1954. As a CFL player in Edmonton, he captured back-to-back Grey Cups in 1955 and 1956. After retiring from the CFL, he took over the head coaching position at the University of Alberta in 1963. Fracas led the Golden Bears to three league championships over the next four years including a berth in the inaugural Canadian College Bowl final (now the Vanier Cup) in 1965, where his Bears dropped a 14-7 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues. He then returned to his hometown of Windsor, Ont., and in 1968 became the first ever head coach in Lancers history, a position he held for nearly 20 years. A two-time OUAA West coach of the year (1976, 1977), he guided the Lancers to the Central Canada Intercollegiate championship in 1969 and a share of the Yates Cup title in 1975. Every year since 1988, CIS has presented the Gino Fracas Award to an outstanding volunteer coach, in honour of the former player, coach, administrator and University of Windsor professor. In addition, for his all-around excellence on the football field, Coach Fracas became an inaugural member of the OUA Football Legends Wall of Fame and in 1987 he received the prestigious Football Canada/ CFL Award of Merit for outstanding lifetime contribution to football in Canada. In all, he has been inducted into six different halls of fame, including the University of Windsor Alumni Sports Hall of Fame. “We are thrilled that Gino’s legacy will carry on through his induction into the (CFL) Hall of Fame,” said Windsor director of athletics, Gord Grace. “He was an icon at the University of Windsor and his contributions to the sport of football were truly outstanding.” “On behalf of the Fracas family, we are extremely pleased to see Gino inducted into the Hall of Fame,” said son Mark Fracas. “I think his colleagues and friends would agree with me when I say that our father was an exceptional coach and innovator. His induction to the Hall was always a dream of his and now that dream has come true.”. The Official E-Magazine of OUA

Team History
The 2011 football season marks 150 years of football at the University of Toronto. It was in 1861 that the first student football game was held, with the foundation of an official football team being widely recognized as 1877. The University of Ottawa was not far behind, first establishing a football club in 1881. The following year a football club at Queen’s University was officially established, as recognized by the institution itself. Interestingly, many historians note Queen’s first football club was initially formed in 1873, which is now recognized as the year in which ‘Queen’s Athletics’ was established. Another foundation date that is disputed by historians originates in Guelph. The University of Guelph does not have an officially recognized foundation date, although there are links to a football club in the late 1800s. A football club from the Guelph OAC, formerly an associate agricultural college of the University of Toronto prior to being amalgamated by the University of Guelph in 1964, began playing games as far back 1879. The next club to establish football was McMaster, who took their first snaps in 1901. They were followed by the University of Western Ontario (1929), University of Waterloo (1957), and Wilfrid Laurier University (1961). The last two universities currently participating in OUA football, York and Windsor, were both established in 1968. The history of football at OUA universities touches three different centuries and has provided countless moments, stories, and games that are etched in time. All that remains to be seen is what exciting moments OUA football will provide us with next.

2011 Team Previews By OUA football writer Mike Hogan The more things change the more they stay the same. It seems like every season Western, McMaster, Laurier, Ottawa and Queen's are the favourites in everyone's pre-season predictions. Guelph and Windsor are the teams that could surprise or disappoint, while Waterloo, U-of-T and York are perpetually looking to rebuild. This season that time-tested formula applies once again. Hec Crighton winner Brad Sinopoli has taken his talents to the CFL, but there are more than a handful of players who will provide the conference with star power. If you don't know the names Kyle Quinlan, Donnie Marshall, Nathan Riva, Shamawd Chambers and Jedd Gardner you will. Like defensive football? You'll love Ryan Chemielewski, Wilkerson DeSouza and Sam Sabourin. We'll also get a chance to see newcomers like Shomari Grant, Marcus Grandison and Tyler Varga begin their OUA careers.
Let's kick this thing off!

Western Mustangs
At a Glance Schedule
WESTERN MUSTANGS (7-1) At some point they may want to rename it the Marshall Cup. As a head coach at McMaster and now at Western, Greg Marshall's teams have won the Yates Cup seven times in his last eight seasons in the league. Once again Marshall will have a talented Mustang team that will try to win a third straight Ontario title, but the loss of a trio of high-profile defensive players to the CFL will not make things easy. John Surla (Montreal), Craig Butler (Saskatchewan) and Zander Robinson (Toronto) all had eligibility left with the 'Stangs but each made his respective pro team. That leaves the defence in a state of rebuild that it likely didn't expect. Robinson's loss will hurt, but it was a position of good depth. The D-line will be anchored by returning starters Mike Van Praet, David Lee and Brent Wheeler. The LB group loses Surla to the CFL and Adrian Kaiser to graduation, and as camp began all three starting jobs were open. On the back end

Butler is gone and Mike Spence will be the safety. Beau Landry and Aaron Handsor are back as is Scott Janz, who missed all of last season with a knee injury. Perhaps the biggest loss on that side of the ball is that of DC Mickey Donovan, who announced he was leaving the program just before training camp opened. Paul Gleason will be the defensive co-ordinator this season.

Offensively the Mustangs will be led by QB Donnie Marshall, who led his team to the Ontario title despite battling injuries all season. Marshall not only threw for over 1,400 yards, but was third in the conference in rushing. He's back with more confidence than ever and a dynamic pair of running backs behind him. Not only does the talented Nathan Riva return, but the Mustangs added prized recruit Tyler Varga from Cameron Heights in Kitchener to the mix. He's a 225 pounder who ran the 40 in 4.45 seconds in camp. He brings a combination of speed, power and agility.

Also returning are All-Canadian Matt Norman and veteran Greg Willson. It's a very good group.

McMaster Marauders
At a Glance Schedule
MCMASTER MARAUDERS (6-2) "Leave no doubt" is the slogan painted on the Marauders home turf this season. It fits because there's "no doubt" McMaster is one of the pre-season favourites to win the Yates Cup. MAC may have the most star power in OUA and its brightest star is perhaps the league's best QB. If last year's 2,000-yard, 19 TD season was great, then Kyle Quinlan's off-season was incredible. He played in the East/West Bowl, had a chance to throw at the CFL Combine and to top it off he attended the Hamilton Ti-cats training camp. For his sake he better have had at least a little rest because he's going to be throwing the ball a lot. Putting the ball in the air often shouldn't be a problem because of the wealth of talent in the receiving corps, led by last year's top targets Matthew Peressini and Michael DiCroce. Deep threat Jarred Jones has incredible speed, but has to stay healthy. Brad Fochesato will see more action this year and a familiar name, Andrin Masotti, the son of Argo great Paul, is a true freshman. Running the ball is a viable option for the offence with the dangerous

There shouldn't be any problems with the linebackers. The man in the middle is Ryan Chmielewski who is as solid as anyone in the OUA. At one outside spot is the incredibly athletic Ben D'Aguilar, while on the other side highly-touted freshman Nick Shortill will get a long look as a potential starter. Behind that unit is a group of ballhawking DBs. Last year it may have been the youngest bunch in the league, but still picked off 23 passes in 10 games.

The return game has game breakers like Jones and Dicroce available, while the incredibly strong-legged sophomore kicker Tyler Crapigna is back. He's legit anywhere from 55 yards in. McMaster has not won the Yates Cup since 2003. This team has a very realistic chance to end that drought. Head Coach Stefan Ptaszek says: "This is a very, very talented team. HAWKS
(4-4)
The 2011 season for the Hawks was on the strange side by anyone’s standards. It opened with a 46-1 humbling at Western. That was followed by a two-point loss at McMaster and a forfeit against Toronto for using an ineligible player. After that things got back to normal as Laurier rattled off four wins in its next five games. Four also happens to be the number of consecutive Laurier losses in the OUA semi-finals, a streak that head coach Gary Jeffries is determined to snap. Second-year Hawk Shane Kelly will start at quarterback after transferring to Canada from the U.S. a year ago. This year he knows the Canadian game better and is much more comfortable with his surroundings. He should be really comfortable when he realizes he has one of the best receiving corps in the country at his disposal. Rapanaro has graduated. Trying to fill his rather large shoes will be Carlos Naranjo who brings a Rapanaro-like combination of speed and toughness. He'll be joined by Mitchell Bosch and Daniel Bishop. Former QB Luke Thompson returns as the starting safety and anchors a veteran group. Shane Burns will start at one corner along with Shane Herbert, who attended the Toronto Argos training camp. Scott McCahill will play one halfback spot and highly touted freshman Chris Ackie will man the other. Nathan Hawkes has the best shot at returning as the PK. Each year the Hawks enter the season as one of the favourites to win the OUA Championship. This year is no different. Coach Jeffries says: "We've been stuck on the semi final four years in a row. QUEEN’S GAELS (3-5) It had all the makings of a true controversy. Would the Gaels come back with Justin Chapdelaine as their QB or would the rifle-armed Billy McPhee be the starter? Head Coach Pat Sheahan eliminated any of that discussion in spring camp when McPhee was taking first-team snaps while Chapdelaine was there as a receiver. McPhee is best known for his incredible arm strength and will now have every opportunity to show it off. As for Chapdelaine, his route to the CFL may be better served by his move to wide out. He certainly has game-breaking speed. He'll be joined by Giovanni Aprile and Tom Howes as McPhee's main targets. RB Ryan Granberg was in the shadow of Jimmy Therrien last year, but with Therrien gone the smaller Granberg becomes the featured back. What he lacks in size he makes up for in elusiveness. The O-line also lost some size as 6' 10" Matt O'Donnell signed with the

GUELPH GRYPHONS (4-4) The Gryphons enter the 2011 season with as many unanswered questions as any team in the league. The one certainty is that the combination of Chris Rossetti to Jedd Gardner will be just fine. Rossetti did a nice job protecting the football, throwing 10 TDs and only two INTs a year ago. Half of those touchdowns were to Gardner. The pair couldn't get away from each other during the off-season either. While the QB was doing an off-field internship with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts, Gardner was on the field during training camp after being drafted by the double blue. Gardner had a very active off season. The two-time All-Canadian was also a part of Team Canada at the IFAF World Championship of American Football held in Austria. Not to mention, he also enters the season just 19 yards away from becoming the leading receiver in Guelph history.

Dillon Dimitroff comes from the Gryphons royal family and has showed that he's on the team by merit, not bloodline. His grandfather, Tom Sr., was a head coach with Guelph, dad Randy was a QB for the 1984 Vanier Cup winners, and his uncle Thomas Jr., a DB with the Gryphs in the late 80's is the general manager of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. Dillon had over 400 receiving yards a year ago. Nick FitzGibbon won't be back this season. The highly entertaining RB's loss will definitely be felt. He was not only a powerful runner, but he could catch the ball coming out of the backfield, as well. Of all the returning backs, Waterloo transfer Steve Lagace saw the most action a year ago, but he had only 17 carries. The O-line will be anchored by Matt Richardson.

Defensively, the team has a tough job ahead replacing Adam Dunk and Matt Rossetti at linebacker. Perhaps the best returning player of the front seven will be DT Cameron Thorn. The strength of the defence will, without a doubt, be the secondary. James Savoie

will be looking to build on his resume which already has a pair of All-Canadian honours on it. Jordan Duncan was an OUA All Star last season, and ball-hawking Mark Durigon returns as well. He has more INTs (11) over the last two seasons than anyone in the CIS. Simply put, Guelph's kicking game was awful last year hitting just 9/17 and nothing over 27 yards. Newcomer Daniel Ferraro was a GTA All Star last year and may have the best shot of turning things around. They may not be the most talented team from top to bottom in OUA, but there's enough front line talent here to make them a very dangerous team to play against. Head Coach Stu Lang's voicemail message says: "Hello, this is Stu Lang the head coach of the 2011 Yates Cup Champions.

It would be easy to write off this year's edition of the Gee-Gees. The club lost a ton of talent including Hec Crighton-winning QB Brad Sinopoli, but the team remains optimistic they can remain in the hunt. Following two elite quarterbacks like Sinopoli and Josh Sacobie can't be easy, but that's what faces Aaron Colbon this year. The good news for the garnet and grey is that he's in his third season and knows the system very well. The club may have had the best receiving corps in the country a year ago, but have lost their top two targets in Cyril Adjeitey and Matthew Bolduc. Head Coach J-P Asselin is confident the unit will still be very good with veterans Steven Hughes, Bogdan Raic and transfer Maxime Lepinay from Sherbrooke. At RB Brendan Gillanders is back. The same can't be said about the offensive line where of last year's five starters only center Shavin Fernando is back. Kevin Magee played on the defensive line last year and will move over to guard. Adam Valchuk will also move from one side of the ball to the other. There's a fierce competition underway to find the starting five.

Magee and Valchuk were expendable from the D-line because of the depth of athletes there. It will be a much lighter, much faster group than a year ago so opponents will certainly see a different look. The main man on the line is Roberto Almonte. The LB group is also very young and very athletic. Nick Lecour may have been the team's rookie of the year in 2010 but may be pushed for playing time because of the number of quality LBs

including Tyler Sawyer. Last season the secondary was a strong point and Asselin says it will be again. Chris Daly is one of the halfbacks and a team captain. Matt BondLapointe is back as are Randy Williams and Soonbum Cha. Matt Falvo is one of the best kickers in the country. He was a second-team All Canadian last year so that position is rock solid. It's a different looking Gee-Gees team on paper, but on the field they may be just as tough as they were a year ago.

Last year Toronto was a team that many Canadian football fans found themselves cheering for. Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, the Blues emerged from an era of forgettable football to make a run at a playoff spot and as a result, sympathetic fans were hoping they would find their way into the post season. Unfortunately for U of T that didn't happen, but there's no reason the club can't challenge for a playoff spot again in 2011. Opponents have to contend with the arm and the running ability of fifth-year QB Andrew Gillis. A mature player with tremendous leadership skills, Gillis ran for 245 yards last season and there's no reason to think he won't be running as much this year. When they rush the ball more conventionally, last year's team Rookie of the Year Aaron Milton will be there. He gained national attention by sprinting for a 105-yard major in the Blues’ upset victory over then secondranked Ottawa. Page 60

Williams (another East/West Bowl player), Adam Fehler and Zack Lukings. In the secondary the Blues lose three-time OUA All Star Derek Batchelor, but the veteran Willie Sharpe is back for a fifth year and will move to the safety spot. He'll find himself joined in the secondary by Kevin Kinahan, Ajani Oldacre, David Green and Trevor Harvey. It will be interesting to see how long it takes these individuals to gel as a group. The kicking will be handled by Andrew Lomasney, who hit 7-of-9 FG attempts last year. It's an interesting collection of athletes that might just be battling for a post-season spot. Head Coach Greg Gary says: "It looks like all the pieces are lining up for us to be competitive."

WINDSOR LANCERS (2-6) The Lancers are searching for a new identity this year and there's already been a change at the top. Joe D'Amore has been around the Lancers as a player and as an assistant coach and now enters this year as the interim head coach. The former star receiver will have plenty of talent around to try and establish a passing game. The most-welcomed news is that Sam Malian is back at QB after suffering a concussion that cost him most of last season. A pocket passer with a strong arm, Malian will have a very talented group of receivers to throw to. The best of the bunch is 6'4" Jordan Brescacin, who showed his stuff at the East/West Bowl this season. He's joined by veterans Cory Fernandes and Evan Pszczonak. To make the passing game work the Lancers will have to establish some sort of running attack. Paul Lefaive is back, but the wild card for the Lancers this year is

newcomer Shomari Grant, a transfer from East Central University in Oklahoma who will allow the offence to play at a higher tempo. He should have success as long as the offensive line does its job, something that was more than just a little problematic last year. Low numbers and injuries devastated the group, which has LT Samir Mouawad, C Nick Corrado and RG Jared Olsen set. There are several recruits and transfers adding to the unit's depth and the opportunity is there for a couple of newcomers to establish themselves and all eyes will be on prized recruit Jeremy Veres, a 310 pound local product.

A "bend, but don't break" defence will be called upon to be the difference maker for Windsor. Returning 300-pounder Seamus Postuma anchors the line. Postuma also played in the East/West Bowl. Veterans Andrew Bakos, Garrit Post and Taras Potopilnyj complete the front four. Postuma and Bakos each had three sacks last year as did outstanding linebacker Akeem Whonder, who also showed off his talent at the East/West Bowl. He is joined by Brad Adams as returning starters, while David Tiede will get the chance to start this year. The secondary is a very strong group that features Louis Polyzois, Shea

Pierre, A.J. Langlois, Udoka Nwaesei and Matt McGarva, who had four interceptions last season. Last year Dan Cerino showed off his strong leg on kickoffs and long FGs and this year becomes the regular kicker and punter. He needs to work on his consistency punting the football. Head Coach Joe D'Amore says: "Our goal is to get to the playoffs, somewhere we haven't been since 2006 and I think we have the talent to do so."

It was another abysmal season for the Lions. No wins and an average score of 52-9 against. The goal now becomes to increase the talent level and change the culture, which is easier said than done, but second-year head coach Warren Craney's recruiting year has gone a long way to improving both. This season's edition of the Lions may see freshmen start in 18 of the 24 spots. One player back for a third year is dual threat QB Nick Coutu. He's blessed with a very strong arm and also led the Lions in rushing last season with over 300 yards. It also doesn't hurt to have a tremendous teacher in secondyear OC Michael Faulds, the leading passer in CIS history. Coutu is going to have to get rid of the football quickly because he'll have an incredibly young o-line in front of him. When returning center Ed Michel looks to either his left or right he'll see two freshmen next to him. Of those four freshmen the Lions were particularly happy to get Max Sullivan and

The Lions most prized off-season recruit is LB Marcus Grandison. Not only does he increase the Lions ability at that position he gives it a natural leader. Coach Craney said Grandison "took over the team three or four days into camp". He'll be joined at LB by another pair of freshmen including Denzel Philip, who played his high-school ball for Toronto mayor Rob Ford. Patrick Russell is a third-year starter who will anchor the d-line. He played in the East/West Bowl and adds a great deal of quickness. Freshman Michael Livingston heads to York after a standout career at Toronto Northern.
Only two jobs in the secondary were filled in with pen as camp opened. Andrew Collymore started his CIS career at Bishop's, while rookie Jordan Nugent will also start for sure. The other starting jobs are up for grabs in camp. Dror David is the punter and Henry Dervishi is the new PK. The coaches have all accepted that if the Lions are going to see long-term gain they needed some short-term growing

WATERLOO WARRIORS
It was the longest off-season imaginable. A well-publicized drug scandal led Waterloo officials to cancel the entire 2010 season. Now that the nightmare is over the Warriors are looking to start the rebuilding process. Offensively it will be Evan Martin's show. He'll be the starting QB while backup duties fall to Luke Balch. Rather than having him waiting on the sidelines for a shot at QB, Waterloo will try to best utilize Balch's athleticism by playing him as one of the receivers. The Warriors may have a running back by committee until one those committee members establishes himself as the solid number one. Marco Visentine will get the first crack at starting, but there's a fairly lengthy list of other athletes ready to step in should he falter. Ryan Di Risio is a freshman that Head Coach Dennis McPhee is very high on. When the Warriors throw there's little doubt Dustin Zender will be the go-to guy. Joey Strorozuk and Balch will also see the ball.

The biggest area of concern for the Warriors is the offensive line. East/West Bowler Austin Partridge will start at RG and Thomas Demers will be the LG. There are several players looking for playing time, but the opening day offensive tackles will be Josh McAndrews on the right side and Vinnie Frasson will start at LT. Defensively the Warriors are going to be young. There are some veterans like DT Djordje Gavrilovic (another East/ West Bowl participant), LB Matt Peto and Reid Nicholson at FS, but it's the group of young players that has McPhee really excited. LBs Dustin Crowder and Brendon Conway, CB Connor Hitchcock (a cousin of long-time Tiger Cat Rob Hitchcock) and Matt Kielo are some of the players that the Warriors coaching staff are eager to work with. It will be interesting to watch this group as it matures. The place kicking duties will be handled by Jake Fiorucci. There are several factors lined up that could make this a long season for the Warriors, but after what happened a year ago this marks a season of optimism as Waterloo tries to get back to becoming the Yates Cup contending program it was a decade ago. Some of the needed pieces are now in place. Head Coach Dennis McPhee says; "We believe strongly in our returning leadership and the goal is for us to make the playoffs."

CFL Prospects
Fourteen OUA Prospects to Watch By Duane Ford
Dozens of fourth year players across the province will have added incentive to perform during the upcoming OUA season, as they strive to get on the radar of the Canadian Football League's talent evaluators. More will emerge as the season progresses but here are fourteen OUA studs that the scouts are already talking about. (In alphabetical order): Mitchell Bosch (LB, Wilfrid Laurier): The British Columbia native has blossomed into a productive defender and, with another strong season, will get a chance to go head to head with the nation's best at the CFL E-Camp. Jordan Brescacin (WR, Windsor): It will be difficult for scouts to ignore the production of this 6'4" Lancer, whose 47 receptions in 2010 rank second among all returning CIS players.
Page 82

Shamawd Chambers (WR, Wilfrid Laurier): Without question, this Golden Hawk enters the season as the OUA's top draft prospect, largely on the strength of impressive testing results and a strong game during East West week in May. Shamawd Chambers
CFL Prospects
Jason Medeiros (OL, McMaster): This Marauder turned heads throughout East West week, using strength and aggressiveness to establish himself as one of the top guard prospects in this class. Photo by Michael P Hall
Matt Norman (OL, Western Ontario): Not only a starter since he arrived in London, but also a perennial All-Canadian, this Mustang guard is well known to CFL scouts after participating in back to back East West Bowls.
Matt Norman
Frank Pankewich (DE, Queen's): Earning CFL playing time is always a challenge for Canadian defensive ends but the Gaels pass rush terror has done enough at the CIS level to warrant the opportunity. Austin Partridge (OL, Waterloo): 2011 will represent Partridge's first taste of intercollegiate competition but the upside of this intelligent, athletic O-Lineman will surely garner some attention. Seamus Postuma (DT, Windsor): One of Ontario's top defensive tackles has the kind of size at 6'3", 300 lbs. that will also earn him some CFL consideration on the offensive side of the ball. The Official E-Magazine of OUA
Page 83
CFL Prospects
Kyle Quinlan (QB, McMaster): After taking part in the Hamilton TigerCats training camp in June, the Marauders pivot has a strong understanding of what it will take to get a look at the next level. Bogdan Raic (SB, Ottawa): Buried in a deep receiving corps for his first three years, Raic is poised to make a name for himself with his combination of size and soft hands. Nathan Riva (RB, Western Ontario): This Mustang needs to shake the injury bug that wrecked his 2010 season and show CFL scouts that he is back to being one of the OUA's most explosive athletes. Tyler Sawyer (LB, Ottawa): Although he's not physically imposing, scouts will recognize that Sawyer's instincts and talent make him one of the keys to the Gee Gee defence. Kalven Seilis (DE, Guelph): Entering his second CIS season, this 6'5" former Eastern Michigan transfer definitely has both the physical attributes and skill set to draw CFL interest.

Mike van Praet (DT, Western Ontario): The stocky and powerful Mustang showed last year that he could come back from the broken ankle that cost him his '09 season, and in 2011 aims to demonstrate that he's ready for the next level.

ou don't have to look far to find former OUA stars continuing to dominate the gridiron at the next level. When it comes to supplying the Canadian Football League with top notch Canadian talent, OUA is leading the way. Currently there are 48 (up from 43 in 2009) former members of OUA competing in the CFL or NFL. More amazingly, each OUA team is represented by at least one player. The Western Mustangs lead the way with 11 former players currently on a CFL/NFL rosters. Following Western are Queen’s with 10, McMaster with seven, Laurier with five, Ottawa, Windsor and York with three, and Guelph, Waterloo and Toronto with two each. There are 3 former OUA alumni currently on NFL rosters including DT; Vaughn Martin (UWO) who was drafted in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers. Joining Martin are OL Joel Reinders (Waterloo) who was sign by the Cleveland Browns and OT Matt O’Donnell who was inked by the Bengals.

Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football returns to theScore on Sat. Sept. 10, marking the 10th season of University Rush coverage. Again this year, theScore will broadcast six regular season and four playoff games, culminating with the 104th Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy in High Definition (HD) on Nov. 12. “For the 10th season, University Rush will share the accomplishments of our talented student-athletes with the entire nation,” said Ward Dilse, Executive Director, Ontario University Athletics. “It is an honour to be able to reach this milestone with theScore; we are thankful for their contribution to the development and growth of Ontario university sport.” It all gets underway in the second week of the OUA season, when the McMaster Marauders play host to the 2010 Yates Cup champion Western Mustangs in a rematch of last season’s semifinal. The then nationally ranked No. 7 Marauders dominated the time of possession battle over the No. 2 Mustangs, but 21 unanswered points by Western gave them a big enough cushion to survive their seven turnovers to hold on for the 34-28 victory, advancing to their fourth straight Yates Cup game. Sept. 17 finds the Guelph Gryphons visiting the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Blues suffered a heart-breaking loss in the first week of 2010 after a Gryphon field goal was kicked with six seconds remaining in the game to give Guelph the

two-point win. This marks Toronto’s first nationally televised game since the 2006 season when they faced the York Lions in the 37th Annual Red & Blue Bowl. The first of two University Rush Homecoming games featured on theScore has McMaster visiting Guelph on Sept. 24. The following week Ottawa will travel to University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont. to take on Wilfrid Laurier. Coach JP Asselin and the Gee-Gees will be without 2010 Hec Crighton winning quarterback Brad Sinopoli (Peterborough, Ont.) when they take on the Golden Hawks on Oct. 1. Last year’s semifinal between the two teams came down to one point with Ottawa narrowly escaping 32-31. After a break for Thanksgiving, Laurier plays host again as 2010’s third and fourth place teams, McMaster and the Golden Hawks, meet in Week 7 on Oct. 15. When the two teams played each other last year the Marauders took the 26-24 decision. With only a few key losses on either roster, fans can expect another close game. McMaster quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) will need to keep his head up for Laurier’s defence with the departure of Justin Glover, Michael Warner, and Michael Hoy from the Marauders’ offensive line. The Golden Hawks return Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) who led the defence last season with 35 solo tackles, 22 assisted tackles, two sacks, and three interceptions, but will be without 2010 OUA Presidents'

trophy nominee Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who played out his eligibility with the purple and gold. The OUA regular season concludes on Saturday, Oct. 22 with five games that will no doubt have playoff implications. Last season, even after the final games were played, a three-way tie had to be broken to determine playoff seeding. Week 8 will feature a key game for post-season positioning. “We're very proud of our partnership with OUA football over the past decade. Returning for another season is theScore’s play-by-play announcer Tim Micallef. He’ll be calling all the action and will

be joined during each broadcast by former Western football star Donnovan Bennett, who moves up from the sidelines for his rookie season in the booth. “I’m extremely excited to enter my ninth season calling OUA games on theScore and the addition of Donnovan Bennett with his commitment to the game, student-athletes and broadcast only adds to that excitement,” said Tim Micallef, play-by-play announcer, theScore. “To have a young man whose games I called now sitting beside me is just proof of one, how old I am and two, the indelible mark we’ve been able to make on university athletics.” 2011 University Rush Schedule Saturday Sept. 10 Western @ McMaster Saturday Sept. 17 Guelph @ Toronto Saturday Sept. 24 McMaster @ Guelph Saturday Oct. 1 Ottawa @ Laurier Saturday Oct. 15 McMaster @ Laurier Saturday Oct. 22 To Be Determined Saturday Oct. 29 OUA Quarter-Final Saturday Nov. 5 OUA Semifinals (HD) Saturday Nov. 12 104th Yates Cup (HD)
