he 2009 playoff run, as seen by a Gael, was one for the ages. It was a summation of years of hard work both on and off the field. The hours were put in by the players, the coaches, and the Queen’s supporters. Depending on your age the success this past year could have been building for three decades if you are a long time supporter who could remember the last time that Queen’s won the Yates cup (keeping in mind that for 21 of these years Queen’s was in the OntarioQuebec conference), for five years if you were finishing your CIS eligibility, or from August 2009 if you were a rookie. It was evident to those around the Queen’s football program that there was something special on the horizon. With outstanding systems and athletes in place for the 2008 season many people thought that it was not simply Queen’s year to win the Vanier - but that it was now or never. After finishing a perfect season, seeded in first place, and enjoying a first round bye it seemed as though the stars had aligned for Queen’s to make a run at the Vanier Cup. With a team that was breaking school records in almost all categories, 10 OUA first team All-Stars, and six OUA second team All-Stars, it was only the Ottawa Gee-Gees who stood in the way of a Yates Cup appearance. After a 23-13 loss many people fell off the Gaels bandwagon and questioned how they could be successful in 2009 with the loss of players like Mike Giffin (RB), Thane Carter (LB) and Dee Sterling (DT). It seemed as if this doubt had permeated everywhere within the conference except for in the locker room at Richardson Stadium. With a significant portion of the 2008 players returning it was obvious that the loss in 2008 and the doubts of outsiders were being used to fuel the team. Off season training was intense and the players were well prepared for the August training camp. The core group of players had been together for a couple of years and it was evident that everyone was on the same page and knew how to fully play their role within the team. This allowed the Gaels to hit the ground running during training camp. The Gaels had a season of close games being won in the fourth quarter by small margins. The first game of the season was won with a Mike Petranovic field goal on the final play of the game, and the last game of the season was won by only two points. The composure and experience of the team was evident in these close games. The Official E-Magazine of OUA

The Vanier Cup and Mitchell Bowl were unforgettable experiences that all players dream of when they start their CIS careers. The novelty of playing out of conference teams was a great experience but I think that the most meaningful game for me, as a fifth year OUA player, was being in the Yates Cup. Before reaching that game, we had to get past our first playoff game in the OUA SemiFinals against McMaster. This marked the third time in the last five years that these two teams would meet in the OUA playoffs. The Gaels came out ahead in 2009 but the young secondary for the Marauders will definitely be a force in the years to come. The feeling was electric as the critics of the Queen’s football program had been silenced. The Gaels would appear in their first Yates Cup since 2002. The week leading up to the Yates Cup was filled with excitement, fuelled not only from the players, but from the students on campus, the Kingston supporters, and the alumni from across the country. Playing against a long time rival, in a championship game, at Richardson Stadium, and in front of a sold out crowd epitomized what university football is all about. The game itself also lived up to, if not exceed, the expectations of football fans regardless of their regular season loyalty. Even those who were casual OUA football fans would appreciate this championship game with over 1,000 passing yards, over 80 points scored, 7 lead changes, and only a 4 point spread with no time left on the clock. With a victory in the Yates Cup, the optimism around Kingston was palpable. Their Gaels had been able to advance to the Mitchell Bowl and the game would be played on our home field against the perennial powerhouse from Quebec City - Laval. Laval was hoping for a win which would Page 10

enable them to play and host the Vanier Cup with the support of their hometown crowd. This was a unique game for the Gaels as they prepared to play a team that they had not played against in nine years. The players and coaches pulled out all the stops and were determined to get a win in this national semi-final game. In both the Mitchell Bowl, and the Yates Cup, the Queen’s students along with the Gaels supporters were the thirteenth man that became an important extra factor that the visiting teams had to account for. The Gaels upset the number one seeded Rouge et Or and had earned a berth into the national championship game. The stage was set for another unfamiliar foe for the Gaels to face. This time it would be the Calgary Dinos coming off of a victory over the St. Mary’s Huskies. The whole week was a rare experience for the Queen’s football team as we spent a week away from Kingston; we game planned, watched film, and practiced in Quebec City to compete for the Vanier Cup. The game was a great experience to be a part of. Following four hard fought quarters and overcoming an 18 point halftime deficit the Gaels were victorious. A Vanier Cup victory was not only a positive reflection on the program at Queen’s but also showed the strength of the OUA conference. It has been whispered for years that the OUA may produce the Hec Crighton winners but that they could not compete with the other conferences. This was a win for Queen’s but it also served to illustrate that the OUA can compete

ast season marked the culmination of two of the most outstanding careers in the history of OUA football. Fifth-year senior quarterbacks Michael Faulds (Western) and Dan Brannagan (Queen’s) delighted fans as they duelled each other over eight weeks of the regular season for the right to be called OUA football’s most prolific quarterback. After five seasons, Faulds and Brannagan would finish 97 yards apart as the number one and two passers of all-time. Faulds would end up on top of the stats columns as the career (10,811) and single-season (3033) leading passer, while Brannagan came out on top of a final head-to-head battle between the two. In what would turn out to be one of the greatest Yates Cup championship games in history, Brannagan captured MVP honours in leading his Gaels to a 43-39 victory over the Mustangs in front of his hometown fans at historic Richardson Stadium. Brannagan then followed up his Yates Cup performance with victories in the Mitchell Bowl and Vanier Cup where he was once again named MVP. With spectacular collegiate playing careers complete, Faulds has gone on to become the offensive coordinator at York University while Brannagan continues his playing career as a member of the Toronto Argonauts. With two of OUA footballs biggest stars now graduated, a changing Page 12

Changing of the Guard

of the guard is underway at the quarterback position. A host of athletic young gun slingers are now vying to replace Faulds and Brannagan at the head of the class of OUA quarterbacks. Not only is a new class of signal-callers on the horizon but with them comes an added dimension of mobility that makes them especially exciting to watch. Leading the pack is dual threat passer Brad Sinopoli from the University of Ottawa. Last season Sinopoli was tremendous both throwing and running the ball for the Gee-Gees. Finishing third in OUA passing, Sinopoli was 144 of 249, amassing 2084 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. In addition to his passing totals, Sinopoli added another 627 yards along the ground and seven touchdowns, ranking him sixth among OUA rushers. With a host of weapons back, including; receivers Steven Hughes and Cyril Adjeitey the number two and three receivers in OUA in 2009, and the second leading rusher Jordan Wilson-Ross, Sinopoli looks primed to lead a powerful capital city attack. Two others looking to join the ranks of elite OUA pivots are Kyle Quinlan (McMaster) and Evan Pawliuk (Laurier). What is intriguing about these two young stars is that neither began the 2009 season as their respective team’s starter. Quinlan entered last year’s campaign as the back up to Ryan Fantham, while Pawliuk found himself farther down the depth chart behind starter Luke Thompson and backup Ian Noble. Injuries would provide both Quinlan and Pawliuk their opportunities to lead their respective teams and neither disappointed. Both Quinlan and Pawliuk had similar numbers during their campaigns. Pawliuk finished with slightly more yards, 1457, to Quinlan’s 1405. However, the Marauder passer did a better job protecting the ball, throwing nine TDs against seven INT. Pawliuk on the other hand was picked 10 times while only throwing eight majors. Along the ground Quinlan produced 242 yards and 6 TDs while Pawliuk contributed 238 yards and found the end zone three times. With a blessing of weapons at their disposal including; Dillon Heap and Shamawd Chambers for Pawliuk, while Kevin D’Hollander, Matt Peressini and Mike Dicroce line up for Quinlan, both QB’ should have exciting seasons in 2010 as part of a changing of the guard under centre in OUA football. 103nd Yates Cup

North America’s Oldest Trophy

Y

ates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being presented, predating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, and later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915. From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the topranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams Page 14

(McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date. With the reorganization of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions. Entering its 103 season of competition in 2010, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 28 league titles. The Varsity Blues, winners of the inaugural championship in 1898, stand second with 25 victories. This year’s Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums will take place on Nov. 14 at the home of the highest remaining playoff seed.

What’s Next for Dillon Heap? As we gear up for the upcoming OUA season many eyes are pegged on Wilfrid Laurier's record-setter Dillon Heap.

ast year Dillon Heap, a fourth year business student was a pivotal part on the Laurier offence and special teams. Heap lead the nation in all-purpose yards and was subsequently named a CIS first team all-Canadian. In 2009, Heap set a CIS single season record with 912 punt return yards and lead the Golden Hawks with 592 receiving yards. He also set new school records in kickoff returns and kickoff return yardage. This rising star was selected as the WLU athlete of the year and was nominated for the OUA football player of the year. After leaving the team in 2006 the Waterloo native left for a two year mission and rejoined the Golden Hawks for the 2008 season. Heap explains his mission "provided an opportunity to have others learn about my faith". As an involved member of the community and his church, Heap expresses that faith takes a very high priority and comes before football. Heap’s elusive running style and breakaway speed continue to make him a threat in Laurier's offensive and specials teams schemes. His consistent ability to make plays led Laurier to a second place finish in the regular season in 2009. Following last year’s loss to the Western Mustangs in the OUA semi-final game, Heap describes the experience as bittersweet. "There was a sense of accomplishment of being able to overcome adversity and finish 7 and 2 but losing to Western and not making it out of the OUA was tough". Dillon has already caught the interest of many CFL scouts and will likely be invited to attend the 2011 evaluation camp. When asked about his spectacular season last year Heap humbly explains that he is very pleased that last year gave him confidence in his abilities but remains "very focused on the team accomplishment" . The Official E-Magazine of OUA

Page 17

Dillon Heap

Wilfrid Laurier head coach and manager of football operations Gary Jeffries describes Heap as a player with "unbelievable instincts, athletic ability, and football sense". Jeffries explains that Heap will fill the role he has had in previous years and the coaching staff will continue to put him in a position to make plays. When asked how the Golden Hawks will overcome other teams limiting his returning opportunities Jeffries explains there are many other viable threats on the WLU roster they will be able to capitalize on. Heap echoes this conviction citing the talents of the many other players in the Golden Hawks arsenal. Since his return in 2008 Heap has garnered the respect of his opponents and teammates. WLU quarterback Evan Pawliuk describes Heap as a versatile player with the innate ability to spring big plays. When asked what Heap can do to build off last season Pawliuk explained "he can always continue to improve on offense". Coming off a groundbreaking season of shattering records and establishing himself as one of the dominant players in the OUA, one might ask how can Heap surpass his accomplishments? Heap indicates that he plans to build on his role as a playmaker while contributing to the team as a whole. “I'm trying to distinguish myself as a team leader and a motivator that sets a (high) standard of work ethic". Heap is both excited and optimistic about the upcoming season and looks forward to performing at his personal best and being a member of a talented team. He is highly confident in the skills and abilities of his teammates and looks forward to facing the season’s challenges as an integral part of the offence and special teams. “We have so many other weapons on this team” says Heap all of which should make for an exciting season for the Hawks and football fans. or intense drama, star power, fantastic critical acclaim and the requisite happy ending, the 2009 OUA season had all the necessary ingredients to be a huge hit. The league witnessed one of its most successful seasons ever with a pair of history-steeped rivals and their leading men stealing most of the accolades. For much of the season the story line surrounded Danny Brannagan’s Queen’s Golden Gaels, Michael Faulds’ Western Mustangs and their seemingly pre-destined meeting in the Yates Cup final. As the much anticipated conclusion neared, not even Hollywood’s least cynical critic would have believed the script. A wild-west shoot out featuring an injured gunslinger would have sufficed for an intense climax, but the victors moved on to provide fans with something rarely seen in the movie industry, a pair of amazing sequels which may have surpassed the original. Oh ya…and in the end the good guys won. After knocking off Laval, Pat Sheahan and his crew brought defeated Calgary to give the OUA its first Vanier Cup championship since Laurier’s win in 2005. Now the Gaels have to try and repeat with a brand new cast.

It’s been the same story at Laurier since 2005. Since winning the Vanier Cup that season the Hawks have been perennial contenders but have not been able to win another title. Entering his eighth season as head coach Gary Jeffries said in a release to Laurier boosters “We are young but talented”. His assessment seems to be accurate. Luke Thompson and Evan Pawliuk are both back to compete for the #1 QB job and will have some competition this year from south of the border. Shane Kelly is a 6’4” transfer from Columbia who will push the two vets in camp. Whoever wins the job will have to deal with a new look offensive line in front of him as four of last year’s starters have graduated. The good news for the QB is that the receiving corps is very deep and very good. Returnees Shamawd Chambers, Alex Anthony and Dillon Heap are all tempting targets. The rich get even richer with transfers Nathan Zender, an All-Star at Waterloo and Mark Surya, a Vanier Cup winner at Queen’s joining that already impressive group. Anton Bennett and Rashad Latouche will carry the ball. There are some fantastic returning players for the Hawks defensively including All-Stars Paul Hancock and Steve Cormack on the line with Giancarlo Page 20

Rapanaro at LB. Mitch Bosch is another welcome returnee at linebacker. The biggest question may be who steps up to replace some dominant departing players. Chima Ihekwoaba signed with the Detriot Lions, Courtney Stephen transferred to the NCAA, Taurean Allen is with the Calgary Stampeders and both Kyle Ardill and Jordan van Horne graduated. That’s a lot of front-end talent to try and replace. The most interesting aspect of the Hawks D is the return of David Montoya, the defensive MVP from the ’05 Vanier winners. It’s been almost four years since he last played. PK Chris Mamo is gone. He graduated as the leading scored in Hawk history. Jeffries has given the “inside track” to Nathan Hawkes (can we nickname him “Golden” now?) to succeed him. The return game features the very dangerous Dillon Heap and that’s a good thing for Laurier as he led the country in all-purpose yards. A combination of returning talent and some exceptionally deep recruiting years makes the Hawks the pre-season favourite in most people’s eyes to win the Yates Cup.

It’s a new look organization starting at the top. JeanPhillipe Asselin was named head coach, which surprised many. Asselin finished up his playing days after the ’06 season then joined the Gee-Gees staff. He takes over from Denis Piche. With the departure of Brannagan and Faulds from the OUA, the circuit’s most intriguing QB is now Brad Sinopoli. He’s got a great arm, tremendous pocket presence and can also beat you with his feet as he had well over 600 rushing yards in ’09. He also has the luxury of playing behind a talented, veteran group on the o-line led by Philippe David and Patrick D’Amico. Last year Sinopoli had three major targets and all three are back for their fifth season. Steven Hughes, second team All-Canadian Cyril Adjeitey and Matthew Bolduc will give opposition secondaries nightmares. The defensive line is very talented and very deep. They won’t lose much in when they rotate in fresh legs. Mike Cornell is gone and it will be tough to replace the team’s leading tackler who chipped in with four sacks, but the Gee-Gees have returning talent at the LB spot. Tyler Sawyer is now the leader of that unit with James Mcnaughton riding shotgun. The ball hawking Chayce Elliott is back for a fifth Page 24

year in the secondary as is Lee Shavers. Elliott had four interceptions last year to lead the garnet and grey. The kicking game is in good shape with the return of Matthew Falvo. He was dynamite last year going 17/22 in his field goal attempts and 40+ is certainly in his range. Chayce Elliott will do most of the returning. The talent is good but the main question is how will Asselin progress in his rookie season? He knows the program inside and out and has a wealth of talent to help him in his transition. This is a very, very dangerous football team.

Talented veterans can be found at every position for the Marauders. This is likely Mac’s best chance to win the Yates Cup in a handful of years. It should come as no surprise if they do. Stefan Ptaszek’s team is incredibly talented and has RBs Jordan Kozina and Joey Nemet back to anchor the offense. They’ll run behind and offensive line that features returnees Matt Sewell and Justin Glover. The “hoggies” at Mac are very good and it’s a deep group. The beneficiary of that talent will be returning quarterback Kyle Quinlan. On paper the receiving corps would be the question on offense, but that’s coach Ptaszek’s area of expertise and he should help greatly in that area. Three All-Stars will return on the defensive side of the ball. LB Ryan Chmielewski has been an impact player since his rookie season, while Steve Cecchini is back at DE. Byron Metcalfe is also back in the secondary. As for up and comers look for LB Ben D’Aguilar to make himself noticed. Rookie kicker Tyler Crapigna was a member of the Under-19 Canadian team and will take his talents to Mac. The Marauders have the toughest early schedule in the conference as they open against Queen’s Page 28

It’s a tough act to follow. The Gaels had a dream season in ’09 culminating with a dramatic come-from-behind win in Quebec City. This season will be much different because the man who orchestrated the offense is now with the Toronto Argonauts. Brannagan’s replacement will be Justin Chapdelaine. The obvious question to be answered is how the club progresses with a new pivot. Brannagan’s departure can’t be overemphasized here. He was the second all-time passer in CIS history and was the Vanier Cup MVP. His calmness in the pocket was contagious as the Tricolour never panicked no matter how many points they were down or whenever the momentum seemed to be escaping them. Head coach Pat Sheahan is comfortable giving the nod to Chapdelaine. He was very highly recruited and will be very closely scrutinized in the early going. He didn’t get a ton of game reps last season, throwing just 25 passes. At WR the Gaels were four deep in terms of front line talent. All-Star Scott Valberg was the favorite target a year ago, but he has graduated. The good news is that the other three are back. Chris Ioannides, Blaise Morrison and Devan Sheahan, the coach’s son, will give Chapdelaine plenty of options. On the ground Jimmy Therrien is back for a Page 32

fifth season. As it is on most good teams it was the offensive line that probably didn’t get its due last year despite the presence of three OUA All-Stars in the group. All eyes will be on Matt O’Donnell for several reasons this year. One is that the AllCanadian OT is 6’10”, 321 pounds and hard to miss. Another is that he’s expected to go very high in the 2011 CFL draft. If you’re looking for a couple of key players from last year’s defense try the CFL. Shomari Williams was the first pick in the draft by Saskatchewan while Chris Smith is now making his mark in Winnipeg. In the secondary you can not replace Jimmy Allin. An All-Star corner with five interceptions, he was a game changer on defense. Teams shied away from throwing in his direction. Once again, you can not replace Jimmy Allin on special teams. Not only was he a threat to score every time he touched the ball, he was about the closest thing to automatic field position in the country. All-Star kicker Dan Village had an outstanding season. He was 12/13 in FG attempts including a 47 yarder and he’s back.

It must have been an incredibly long off season in London. Western was on the short end of the 43-39 Yates Cup final, one of the most exciting championship games in recent memory. The players and coaching staff had that disappointment to motivate them in preparation for this year. The problem is when they hit the field they won’t have the familiar #3 leading the offense. Donnie Marshall can’t buy a break. Look at the list of people the new ‘Stangs quarterback has to live up to. His dad Greg, the current head coach, won the Hec Crighton Award as the country’s top player in 1980. Donnie’s uncle Blake won the same award six years later. Now he gets to make a name for himself as the starter and all he has to do is follow the leading passer in CIS history. Marshall is a lot faster than Faulds was, but he’s not the major ground threat on the team by a long shot. Nathan Riva is back for another season and may be the early favourite to win the league’s MVP award if not the Hec Crighton. All-Star receivers Nick Pasic and Nick Trevail will make things easier for Marshall. This group is also deep and very talented. Page 36

The talented offensive line is veteran laden and features the return of All-Stars Matthew Norman and Josh Buttrill. This is a group that can flat out fly. Western has playmakers all over the field on defense, led by President’s Trophy winner John Surla at LB. He’s joined by outstanding talent like Connor Elliott, Craig Bulter and Mike Van Praet. The linebackers are a particular strong point with Surla, Elliott, Adrian Kaiser and Jason Kosec. The strong-legged Darryl Wheeler is back for another year. As a place kicker he had an average regular season before drilling 11 field goals in the three playoff games. Wheeler also had a good year punting the ball. Craig Butler was a very dangerous punt returner last year and he’s back. Don’t let the loss of Faulds fool you. This team is good…really good. A trip back to the Yates final is certainly not out of the question.

The Kyle Walters era ended when the head coach accepted a job with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Coincidentally his departure coincided with the graduation of Justin Dunk, perhaps the OUA’s most athletic quarterback. New boss Stu Lang has five Grey Cup rings and a familiarity with the Gryphons as he was their receivers coach last year. If you excuse the pun there’s no slam dunk replacement at QB. Chris Rossetti has the inside track. The best news is that Nick FitzGibbon is back. He may not get the publicity of some of his peers but coaches around the league know how tough he is to bring down. He’s also has a good set of hands and can be very dangerous catching the ball out of the backfield. Jedd Gardner will lead the receiving corps which also features Dillon Dimitroff. Dimiroff is a part of a family very familiar to Gryphons fans. Tom Sr. was the head coach of the team from ‘79-’83 while Tom Jr., Dillon’s uncle, was a starting safety for Guelph in the late 80’s and is now the General Manager of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. On the o-line Ryan Bomben is now with the Montreal Alouettes and he was the unit’s best player. This unit is a question mark. The strength of the defense will be the seconPage 40

dary. All of the starters are back including two-time first team All-Canadian James Savoie. It’s a very experienced unit with a total of ten starters back for another season including LB Adam Dunk who led the OUA in tackles. Coach Lang is also happy about adding depth to the experience and is excited about getting bigger on both the defensive and offensive lines. Rob Maver is now excelling in the CFL for the Calgary Stampeders and his loss is huge. He hit 13 of his 14 attempts last year and was also an outstanding punter. The Gryphons are also hoping somebody steps up and becomes a top-flight kick returner. It’s an interesting team because there are several strengths, but seemingly as many question marks. Obviously a lot depends on the progression of the quarterback.

It was a disappointing season for the Lancers and the big question is how much better are they than they were a year ago? While they do have a big group of 16 returning players they are without their top player of 2009, OL Matt Morencie, who won the Metras Award before moving on to the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Matt’s father Mike is back for another year as head coach and has to be happy with the depth he has at RB. Both Paul Lefaive and Derek Hymers are back for another season as is QB Sam Malian. Cory Fernandes and Jordan Brescacin were the top two receivers for the Lancers a year ago and both are back for another year. The o-line is anchored now by Chris Cowan and Nick Cicchini with the departure of Morencie. The defense will feature Seamus Postuma again. The All Star had four sacks a year ago and is the player opposing teams will be most wary of. Chris Arquette leads the linebacking corps while the secondary features front-line talent and good depth as well. Page 44

The U-of-T football program went from Vanier Cup champions to punch line in record time. A funny thing is happening with the Blues now though, they’re getting better. Varsity may have had its best recruiting season in years and have a number of returning players who will attempt to make head coach Greg DeLaval’s job easier. Andrew Gillis is the starting quarterback. He had a decent amount of game time a year ago so there should be no “deer in the headlights” transition period. Gillis finished as the Blues leading rusher last year. The ultra-speedy Walter Cariazo should get the start at RB. He had the second fastest 40 time at the East/West Bowl testing. Jonathan Wright and Michael Prempeh are expected to be Gillis’ key targets at receiver.

Another year, another head coach for the Lions. Warren Craney is now the man on the hot seat after seven years at Concordia as their defensive coordinator. The man he’s entrusting the offense to is newly appointed co-ordinator Michael Faulds, fresh off his historic career at Western. To put it bluntly they have a lot of work to do. Last year the Lions were 0-8 and the average score was 52-12. Once again Nick Coutu will be the starting QB. He has an invaluable asset now with Faulds at his disposal. The first job will be to try and reverse his stats of a year ago where he threw 10 interceptions against just four TD passes. LB Steve Reading led the entire CIS in tackles. He’s a good player but his stats were inflated because the defense was on the field so much. Kicker Adam Moretti is gone so that job is open. Jason Marshall was York’s best returner last season and he’s back in red and white. It’s another new regime at York and there will be definite growing pains. This could be another long season for a team that hasn’t won a game since 2007. Page 50

The 4th year senior quarterback officially stepped out of the shadow of Josh Sacobie in 2009 by leading the Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 6-2 record and a 4th place finish. The athletic and towering 6’4” passer had a sensational season passing for 2,084 yards, good enough for 3rd in OUA. However, it isn’t only Sinopoli’s arm that intimidates opposing defences, but it is his ability to run that makes him especially dangerous. In 2009, the Peterborough native took off for an impressive 624 yards rushing which place him 6th among all OUA rushers. With a number of weapons making up his supporting cast look for the Gee-Gees passer to have an even more impressive 2010 in pursuit of a return to the Yates Cup.

#27 Jordan Kozina – RB - McMaster

This bruising back made his return to OUA action in 2009 after a two year hiatus as a member of the Canadian Nation Rugby team. As a rookie Kozina ran for an incredible 1,191 yards and didn’t disappoint in his return. In 2009 he amassed 720 yards on 110 carries as part of a two back system, enough for 4th among OUA rushers. The Brantford native also added another 348 yards through the air. The History major is an absolute work-horse and has the ability to physically punish and ware down opposing defences. He will once again split work with Joey Nemet but if Kozina receives the larger load he is a definite threat to lead the OUA in

#16 Nathan Riva – RB – Western This two-time OFSAA gold medal winner in the 100-metre was a scoring machine in 2009. Riva found the end zone a league leading 15 times, 10 along the ground and another five through the air. The 3rd year Kinesiology major became the Mustangs most dangerous weapon last season and will be relied on heavily to pace the offence while it adjusts to life without Michael Faulds. One of the fastest players in OUA, the LaSalle native covered 1,000 yards of real estate last season with 606 yards rushing and 401 yards receiving on his way toward 2nd team AllCanadian honours.

# Dillon Heap – REC - Laurier

The OUA league leader in all-purpose yards was nothing short of astonishing when he touched the ball in 2009. The Waterloo native finished the season as the 5th leading receiver in OUA with 592 yards, while leading the conference in both kick and punt returns. Heap’s 912 punt return yards set a new single-season OUA record, surpassing the previous mark by nearly 200 yards. Look for Laurier to find additional ways to get this AllCanadian game-breaker the ball in 2010.

It is the first of 10 OUA football games to air nationally on The Score in 2010, commencing with the 103rd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums on Sat., Nov. 13. The defending champion Queen’s Gaels will look to own America’s oldest football trophy once again while Western will look to add to their total of 27 titles. The Mustangs offence will rely heavily on Nathan Riva, a 2nd-Team All-Canadian Running Back in 2009. Riva gained over a thousand yards from scrimmage last season, rushing for 606 and receiving 401 yards. The Marauders will counter with a one-two backfield punch featuring Jordan Kozina and Joey Nemet, a tandem that combined or 1332 yards rushing in 2009. On September 18 the 2009 Vanier Cup Champion Queen’s Gaels will travel to Guelph to take on the new-look Gryphons. Both teams will feature a slew of up and coming stars after the departure of numerous offensive and defensive standouts. Guelph will host their second University Rush game in as many weeks when the Western Mustangs roll into town. The Gryphons have lost three straight to the Mustangs, falling 41-39 n regular season action and 38-17 in the OUA quarter-final playoff game during the 2009 season. The game will feature an outstanding run battle and should be a high-scoring affair.
