HISTORY OF THE YATES CUP Much has changed in Canadian football since the Yates Cup was first awarded in 1898. The newly formed and grandly styled Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union (CIRFU), consisting of exactly three schools (McGill, Queen’s and Toronto) had been established the previous winter as the first interuniversity league in Canada. The game played was still largely indistinguishable from rugby with 15 men a side. Neither a system of downs nor the forward pass had yet appeared. The Yates Cup marked its 100th season of competition in 2007. The oldest Canadian intercollegiate trophy in any sport, the Yates Cup is North America’s oldest football trophy still being awarded, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a McGill medical graduate in 1893 who had played football while in school. He was a lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, and later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War One. He was the second in command of the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) in Bologna, Italy. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis, which claimed his life in 1915. As originally established, the three founding members played home-and-home series amongst each other, and the top team from that competition was awarded the Yates Cup. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in a conference game. This arrangement continued when the league expanded to four teams with the inclusion of Ottawa (1905-1912), RMC (1913) and finally Western (1929 onward). The league expanded to six teams in 1968 with the admission of McMaster and Waterloo, and for three seasons the regular season alone determined the champion. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 70 to date. There have been a few interruptions and anomalies in the awarding of the Yates Cup over the years. Intercollegiate play was suspended during the two World Wars, meaning the cup remained unawarded in the years 1915-1918 and 1940-1944. The winding-down of hostilities in 1945 permitted a brief four-game schedule to be played that fall, but no official champion was declared because of the truncated season. In 1964, McMaster used an obscure technicality in the league by-laws to challenge the league-champion Queen’s Golden Gaels to a single-game challenge for possession of the Yates Cup, a display of bravado that resulted in a 63-6 walloping for the Marauders. In 1971 the establishment of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association saw the football league double in size, resulting in the need for a playoff structure to determine a league champion. Since that time, the Yates Cup has been awarded to the winner of the playoff series. Between 1974 and 1978, the cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the east and west divisions, and in 1979 the Yates Cup final game between east and west champions also served as a Vanier Cup semifinal.

HISTORY OF THE YATES CUP The Western Mustangs can claim a number of Yates Cup superlatives, winning the trophy 29 times, and have hosted the championship game on 23 occasions. After more than a century, Dr. Yates simple but dignified silver cup now sits commandingly atop a substantial plinth of wooden tiers, proudly displaying the enamelled shields of past champions. Care-worn and a bit unwieldy, the trophy remains the pinnacle achievement of team effort in Ontario university football while embodying the traditions of Canada’s oldest surviving football league. Yates Cup Champion Kyle Quinlan hoists the Yates Cup as the McMaster Marauders celebrate their 2012 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.

JOURNEY TO THE YATES CUP Quarter-finals

Semifinals

Guelph 31, Windsor 21 The No. 5 Guelph Gryphons defeated the Windsor Lancers 31-21 in an OUA quarter-final game on a rainy and cold Saturday night in Alumni Stadium. This win will allow the Gryphons to move on to face Queen’s in the OUA semifinals.

Queen’s 34, Guelph 17 The Queen’s Gaels are headed to the Yates Cup after avenging last year’s OUA semifinal overtime loss to Guelph with a commanding 34-17 victory in their 14th consecutive win at Richardson Stadium.

Rob Farquharson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) led the Gryphon offence with 133 rushing yards. Saxon Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) led the receivers with a total of 77 yards, with Alex Charette (St. Catharines, Ont.) close behind with a total of 51 yards. Markham, Ont., native Jazz Lindsey finished with 18-for-29 for 247 yards and a touchdown. The Gryphons started the game out strong, scoring a touchdown on their first drive of the game, never conceding the lead. Windsor’s Austin Kennedy tossed a touchdown in the loss, finished the game with 20-for-37 with 255 yards passing. Kuinton Elliott (Amherstburg, Ont.), Mitch Dender (Amherstburg, Ont.) and Dylan Whitfield (Windsor, Ont.) scored touchdowns for the Lancers. Patrick McGrath (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) led the Gryphon defence with a total of 8.5 tackles. Lineman Cameron Walker (London, Ont.) had 1.5 sacks. The Guelph Gryphons will play the Queen’s Gaels on the road in the OUA semifinals on November 2. McMaster 41, Ottawa 7 The No. 8 McMaster Marauders dumped the Ottawa Gee-Gees 41-7 at a rain soaked Ron Joyce Stadium on October 26 to advance to the OUA semifinals. McMaster’s Marshall Ferguson of Kingston, Ont., tossed two touchdowns and ran for another while Wayne Moore of Etobicoke, Ont. rushed for 140 yards on 22 carries in the win. Ottawa mustered just 10 first downs and 30 rushing yards in the game as the Marauder defence stymied the Gee-Gee offence. Ottawa’s Aaron Colbon closed his CIS career throwing for 181-yards going 17-for-39 and no interceptions. McMaster scored on its first two drives of the game to build a 14-0 lead which would be all the Marauders needed to finish off the Gee-Gees. With the win, McMaster advances to the OUA semifinal and will travel to Western to face the Mustangs at TD Stadium on November 2.

Ryan Granberg (Sherwood Park, Alta.) got things rolling early for the Gaels on Saturday, collecting 88 all-purpose yards in the first quarter including a 1-yard run to put Queen’s up 7-0 five minutes into the game. Granberg finished the game with two touchdowns, 113 yards on the ground, and 27 receiving yards. Guelph took the lead 14-13 with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Jazz Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) to A’dre Fraser (Halifax, N.S). Mississauga, Ont., native Daniel Ferraro made it 17-13 with a minute left in the first half, scoring the last of Guelph’s points. From there, Queen’s scored 21 points, shutting the Gryphons out in the second half to win the game 34-17. After Guelph conceded two safeties to Queen’s, quarterback Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) added to his 228 yards passing on the day, with a touchdown pass coming on a 39-yard strike to Scott Macdonell (Montreal, Que.). McPhee also contributed with his legs, with a 26 yard run to set up Granberg’s second score on the day. The Gaels will play the Western Mustangs in the 106th Yates Cup on November 9. Western 32, McMaster 3 The Western Mustangs completed a perfect regular season one week ago, finishing a flawless 8-0. But despite their previous eight wins, this was the game the Mustangs really wanted to win. And win they did, defeating the McMaster Marauders 32-3 in the OUA semifinals to secure their spot in the 106th Yates Cup. The win at TD Stadium was a redemptive one for the Mustangs. McMaster has knocked the Mustangs out of the playoffs the last two years, including last year when they defeated Western in the semifinal match before becoming the eventual Yates Cup champions. The game was certainly a showcase for the Mustang defenders, who not only shut out the Marauders in the first half, but also held them to only 82 offensive yards. Leading the defence were cornerback Simon Bahru (London, Ont.) and linebacker Beau Landry (Kitchener, Ont.) with six tackles each. Mustangs kicker Lirim Hajruallahu (St. Catharines, Ont.) also had a game to remember, kicking six field goals to tie the CIS and OUA record for most field goals in a playoff game. On the offensive side, Mustangs quarterback Will Finch (Burlington, Ont.) threw for 219 yards with one interception. Running back Yannick Harou (Gatineau, Que.) led the Mustangs on the ground with 20 carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns. McMaster, on the other hand, struggled offensively, earning only 18 first downs and quarterback Marshall Ferguson (Kingston, Ont.) throwing for just 146 yards. McMaster receiver Michael DiCroce (Hamilton, Ont.) was held to 47 yards receiving.

106th YATES CUP GAME PREVIEW MUSTANGS AND GAELS MEET IN 106TH YATES CUP It seems whenever these two teams meet fireworks are required and with an OUA championship on the line, that’s a likely scenario on Saturday as the Queen’s Gaels meet the Western Mustangs at TD Stadium in London, Ont., for the 106th Yates Cup, presented by Pioneer Energy. Oddly enough, the Yates Cup history between these two storied programs is very sparse. This year’s game will mark only the third time the two teams have battled in the OUA championship and so far the schools have traded victories. The first meeting was back in 1979 when Western defeated Queen’s 32-14 in London - that game also doubled as a Vanier Cup semifinal. And of course, the last time these two foes met in the Yates Cup was in 2009 when the Gaels, led by Danny Brannagan, outlasted a hobbled Michael Faulds and the Mustangs 43-39. That year Queen’s would go on to claim the schools fourth Vanier Cup title and four years later that Yates Cup game is still considered one of the best football games in CIS history. This year Western dominated OUA play, putting up a perfect 8-0 record during the regular season and amassing an OUA record 458 points scored. The Mustangs average 57.2 points per game and are the top team in almost every meaningful statistical category in the CIS. After earning a bye during the OUA quarter-finals, Western dumped the McMaster Marauders 32-3 last Saturday to advance to its 37th Yates Cup appearance. Sophomore quarterback Will Finch of Burlington, Ont. and kicker Lirim Hajrullahu of St. Catharines, Ont. have been the headline makers for the Mustangs this season. Finch set a new OUA standard for most passing yards in a campaign (3,047), while fifth-year Hajrullahu became the highest-scoring player in CIS history with 422 points. Although the Western offence has gotten a lot of accolades this year, Queen’s has quietly gone about its business averaging 44.2 points per game and putting up 354 points. In fact, the Gaels rank second to only Western in every major offensive category across the entire CIS. Queen’s finished their regular season with a 7-1 record and won their way to the Yates Cup by avenging last year’s OUA semifinal overtime loss to Guelph with a commanding 34-17 victory over the Gryphons last Saturday. This will be Queen’s 22nd appearance in the Yates Cup game. The Gaels only blemish this season came at the hands of the Mustangs back on September 28 with Western toppling Queen’s 50-31. In that game, the Mustangs poured on 18 fourth quarter points to push the game out of reach for the Gaels who tried to mount a late comeback. Queen’s quarterback Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) tossed 332 yards in that game with one touchdown, while Western was led by their ground game with three different running backs punching in touchdowns and rushing for a combined total of 299 yards. Doing his part, Finch chipped in with 254 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Mustangs may have the edge over the Gaels. Western’s defence has given up only 18.5 points per game while averaging 387.6 yards per game - good for sixth and eighth best in the country, respectively. Queen’s on the other hand is very good at pressuring the quarterback having sacked OUA pivots 35 times which ranks second best in the country. Both defences like to get involved offensively. The Gaels posted five defensive touchdowns to lead the nation while Western scored four times for second place. Queen’s has the head-to-head series advantage holding a 45-41-2 record against the Mustangs. They have also have claimed the last five of seven meetings.

2013 OUA AWARD WINNERS Most Valuable Player Will Finch #4 – Quarterback – Western Mustangs In only his second season Will Finch established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in CIS football, helping the Western Mustangs to their first 8-0 season since 1998, and setting a new OUA team scoring record in the process with 458 points. The Burlington native had one of the greatest statistical seasons in history, setting new OUA milestones for passing yards with 3,047, and completion percentage, hitting 69.7 percent of his passes. He tossed 21 touchdowns on the year and added five more on the ground. Finch was twice named OUA Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts against the McMaster Marauders and York Lions. He was selected as the OUA Male Athlete of the Week on both occasions. J.P. Metras (Lineman of the Year) Ettore Lattanzio #49 - Defensive Tackle - Ottawa Gee-Gees Ettore Lattanzio topped the OUA and tied for the lead in the CIS with 10 sacks this season. The dynamic 6-foot, 230-pound Ottawa native moved from defensive end to nose tackle this season. From the inside lane he counted 79 yards lost by opponents on sacks, which led the CIS. Team mates describe him as having an unstoppable motor, and Lattanzio played through injuries throughout the year. The former high school wrestler at Mother Theresa High School was an OUA second team all-star in 2012, when he amassed eight sacks as a sophomore. President’s Trophy (Standup Defensive Player of the Year) Pawel Kruba #12 - Linebacker - Western Mustangs From Windsor, Ontario, Pawel Kruba is the heart of the Mustangs defence, helping the team finish in the top 10 in both points allowed per game (18.5) and rushing yards allowed per game (109.9). It was another fantastic season for the senior, placing second on the team with 38 tackles, averaging 4.8 per game. He tied for the team lead with three interceptions, helping the Mustangs place second in CIS football creating 28 turnovers. An OUA second team all-star in 2012, Kruba has only improved in 2013 and was honoured during the season as both the OUA and CIS Defensive Player of the Week after racking up nine tackles and two interceptions in Western’s 58-15 win over McMaster on September 7. Norm Marshall (Rookie of the Year) Daniel Vandervoort #83 - Inside Receiver - McMaster Marauders A highly touted recruit from Barrie, Ontario, Daniel Vandervoort came into his first university training camp ready to win a starting spot with the Marauders and did just that. In his first game he caught six balls including a touchdown pass to help the Marauders to an opening week win over Ottawa. His second game saw him named the OUA Offensive Player of the Week, as he had a sensational day versus Queen’s with seven catches for 172 yards that included a 73-yard touchdown reception. Vandervoort continued to shine through the OUA conference schedule, and was among league leaders in receiving. In eight games he had 31 receptions for 594 yards for an outstanding average of over 19 yards per catch, and scored eight touchdowns. Russ Jackson Award Aaron Gazendam #5 – Receiver – Queen’s Gaels An outstanding student completing a BSc in Kinesiology at Queen’s, Aaron Gazendam has been an Academic All-Canadian the past two years and is a candidate for medical school in September of 2014. This season Gazendam has seen his role increase with the team and he has responded with some of the greatest plays for any player on Queen’s this season. Finishing the season with nine receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns, the 6-5 receiver also serves as the team’s back-up kicker/punter. In addition to taking part in a significant list of community service activities in the Kingston area, Gazendam has most recently distinguished himself on the Queen’s campus as a student leader in the anti-hazing movement at the university. He was the male student delegate who attended the Novak Institute for the Prevention of Hazing at the University of Kentucky in June of 2013. Dave “Tuffy” Knight Coach of the Year, presented by Centaur Products Inc. Greg Marshall – Western Mustangs In his seventh season as the Mustangs bench boss, Greg Marshall is the 2013 OUA Coach of the Year after guiding Western to the team’s first undefeated season since 1998 with a perfect 8-0 regular season record. This is Marshall’s fourth nod as the OUA Coach of the Year, previously winning the award in 2010 with Western and in 1999 and 2000 while at the helm of the McMaster Marauders. He also captured the CIS Coach of the Year Award back in 2000, and was named the CFL Coach of the Year in 2004 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Coaching awards aren’t the only trophies on Marshall’s mantle as he won the 1980 Hec Crighton Trophy as the nation’s most outstanding player as a running back for the Mustangs. He then went on to the CFL, winning a Grey Cup in 1982 with the Edmonton Eskimos.
