Passion Breeds

Champions at some point during almost every Grassroots heroes interview, that word is bound to flow spontaneously from the mouth of the interviewee. In fact, in eight years of On The Bay’s annual salute to Grassroots Heroes, I can safely say that “passion” is the single word that links together the many and varied people, from different walks of life and committed to a wide range of different causes, who go above and beyond to make a difference in our community. Our Grassroots Heroes are leaders. Champions. They feel so passionate about a particular cause, they motivate and inspire others to get behind it, whether by rolling up their shirtsleeves or writing a cheque. These champions commit wholeheartedly, with no expectation of a pat on the back or an ‘attaboy.’ Their only reward is the personal satisfaction of knowing they will leave the world a little better than they found it. In professional life, there’s that old saying, “find something you love and figure out a way to get paid for it.” But people who volunteer aren’t getting paid. All the more reason finding the right fit is important. And a big part of that is finding something you’re passionate about, whether that’s gardening or running, preserving our cultural or architectural heritage, saving a beloved local landmark or creating a new one. All of our Grassroots Heroes started out as volunteers, in some cases

putting in a few hours here and there before turning up the volume on their efforts. We want to inspire more volunteers. More champions. More heroes. So in addition to our annual salute to Grassroots Heroes, we bring you a story by Judy Ross about the benefits of volunteering and how to find the right fit, followed by a comprehensive listing of organizations throughout Southern Georgian Bay that are in need of volunteers. Not sure if you’re ready? Not sure you have enough time? No matter how much or how little you think you have to offer, there is an organization that would benefit from having you on its team. Find something you love. Something you believe in. Something you feel good about. Then take that first step. Make the call. ❧

From our

I have been meaning to write you about the Think Tank article. Great story. Lots of ‘buzz’ on the streets. You grabbed it in the opening paragraph. Municipal election results across all of Southern Georgian Bay haven’t given me any wild expectations and I do believe that without some real change in the political structure and players, we will need the involvement of our entire community to move forward. Thanks for including me. Joan Pajunen, Collingwood

ReadeRs

We appreciate the very thoughtful and provocative article on the development of an Institute to foster community engagement and improve collaboration in Southern Georgian Bay. As a result of your article, we have received a significant number of inquiries from individuals wishing to get involved in the Institute. We have been very encouraged by the support and comments including responses from a wide range of people and organizations around the region. Those include new business owners, local entrepreneurs, a university professor, regional business executives, a retired city manager, long-time residents and young recently-arrived couples (see comments on facing page). They were all expressing support for the vision and looking to collaborate and contribute in some way. A smart community is a community that is connected and aware of its strengths and weaknesses. Our challenge is to operationalize a community volunteer organization to strengthen the various sectors and create greater opportunities for collaboration. Southern Georgian Bay has incredible potential to evolve from our historic role as a gateway to the west to our new role: to be a gateway to the future – a place where innovation inspires opportunity. People want to live and work in an area that encourages an active and stimulating lifestyle. We need to build on our success as an active four-season tourist destination

RE: ThE ART of ThE MATTER, fAll 2014 On behalf of the Tremont artists, I am writing to express a very heartfelt thank you for your coverage of this unique arts community and indeed, for the excellent feature, “The Art of the Matter” – so well done! Both the article and the accompanying photographs highlight the growing and vibrant arts scene in this beautiful part of Georgian Bay. Thank you again for featuring the Tremont Gallery in your Fall 2014 edition. Kate Knox, Collingwood

to also have businesses that bring additional employment and prosperity to the area for the benefit of all in our community. The municipalities, college, businesses and organizations need to collaborate to foster entrepreneurship. The Institute allows individuals within our community to provide mentorship, leadership and support. I am also in the process to relocate to Collingwood; hence my interest to get involved locally. I’ve recently been involved with a design innovation group centred in UK-IBI THiNK. Area residents for 25 years and agree with the potential … of the power of this place. I have read the On The Bay article and am very interested in any more info you might have available on your project. It sure looks like a great idea. As well, if you have a circulation list I would appreciate being put on it. Beaver Valley Outreach executive director: I just read the article in On The Bay and I would be interested in receiving future emails. I am the executive director at Beaver Valley Outreach. We are very interested in collaboration and I support many of the concepts written about in the article. New B&B business owners: We are local new business owners with strategic acumen and passionate about the Georgian Bay community. Interested in joining the organization or being a part of its movement.

A Hymn to tHe SmAll HAll true confessions from the 9th Concession by Dan neeDles

In 1853, a group of elders met in the tiny community hall in our little village to discuss the growing problem of youth vandalism in the neighbourhood. Teenagers had far too much time on their hands during the long, dark winters and they needed diversion. The elders had the bright idea of forming a Literary and Debating Society. At the first meeting of the Society, the membership debated the question of whether “the cow is superior to the horse.” The debate erupted in a fistfight, which turned into a riot, and the little hall was wrecked. The elders met again and this time they suggested the debating club be re-configured as an agricultural society and urged the membership to put on a fall fair. Then they set about to build themselves a new town hall. Duntroon has smashed up, burned down and worn out three halls in its history. The fourth one we have now is lasting better than the other three because building materials are improving and young people aren’t using it quite as hard as our ancestors did. But it still needs constant attention to keep it going. The small hall is the centrepiece of many rural Canadian neighbourhoods today. Each one of them has a gatekeeper, the formidable Hall Committee Secretary, a whisky-voiced virago who has ruled the building since before anyone can remember and has never taken a dime in compensation. Hall food is famously simple and rugged: grey roast beef, pale peas, mashed potatoes and pie. This is a tradition that goes back to our grandmothers and their grandmothers before them who knew that food was dangerous and could kill you. Food went into the oven to make it safe to eat. The longer it sat there, the safer it got. The only thing on the tables that didn’t have the bejesus boiled out of it was the whipped Jell-O salad with the pink and green marshmallows. The hall of my childhood was an Orange Lodge in the hamlet of Rosemont. I sang in choirs on that hall stage, performed in plays, learned to dance, had my first swig of rye in a stubby Coke bottle out in the parking lot, got

12

kissed for the first time under the horse chestnut tree in front of the hall. We had an amateur theatre troupe that performed at every Strawberry and Fowl Supper put on by the church ladies. The neighbours were a wonderful audience and they didn’t mind seeing us do the same play over and over again. One of them remembered riding horseback to the hall one winter during the Depression to perform his own small but memorable part in a play on that stage. He hoisted an axe on his shoulder, went to the door and announced, “I’m goin’ out to split some peas for the split pea soup!” That brought the house down, and he was called Split Pea Thompson for the next 50 years. Life expectancy in North America has actually fallen down the world ranking over the last 50 years and psychologists tell us this is because we have become increasingly isolated by our phones and our screens and our stuff. We have lost sight of the fact that we are social animals and need to belong to a group. Researchers have studied what happens when like-minded people take up a good cause and gather in overheated halls to raffle off pies and perform silly skits in front of the neighbours. They have found it makes them less anxious, boosts serotonin levels, increases energy and gives them greater resilience to stress – exactly the sort of effects associated with powerful antidepressant drugs. I consider myself fortunate to live in a neighbourhood that still knows how to do useful and practical things like race chickens or design a flying outhouse. We listen to live music, put on plays, and pile plates high with boiled Canadian food that nourishes the soul. The community hall is one of the very last places where we are allowed to get together and make something out of nothing, just for the fun of it. It is a setting where real friendships are made, strong links are forged, and we are granted what poet Robert Frost once called “a momentary stay against confusion.” Above all, they give us a wonderful sense of place. ❧

Hella sandberG

Theatre Champion “Find something you love to do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” The author of that quote could have been talking about Hella Sandberg, who has translated a 30-year professional career with Theatre Collingwood into volunteering and a post-retirement “hobby” compiling histories of arts and culture in the area. Sandberg was in charge of costumes, makeup and hair design for the nowbygone Laughing Water Festival in Meaford, then for Theatre Collingwood from 1984 until 2012. But retirement hasn’t slowed her down one whit – she now does makeup and hair design on a volunteer basis for Gaslight Community Theatre Productions, a not-for-profit amateur theatre company that got its start in 2010 with The Gaslight Tour in Collingwood. “Hair and makeup, like costumes, really support the actor,” explains Sandberg of the importance of her work. “I do all the research – if the play is about the First World War, what did hair look like? What did makeup look like back then? I try to make sure it’s as authentic as possible.” A born storyteller, Sandberg loves to talk about her years in local theatre and the many people she met along the way, some of whom went on to achieve fame on the national and international stage. “I’ve worked with a lot of wonderful people and formed a lot of wonderful relationships,” she muses. “There are a lot of stories to tell.” Poring over these memories led her to put together a history of Theatre Collingwood, with photos and news articles compiled into binders on display at the Studio Theatre on Simcoe Street. She enjoyed this endeavour so much, she has begun researching a complete history of arts and culture in Collingwood since 1858. “Arts and culture has been shown through studies to be very important for a community’s identity as well as economically,” notes Sandberg in explaining her interest. “It just makes a better community, and that is certainly the case in Collingwood, where we are seeing such a resurgence in arts and culture. I’m all for that – I really feel that we are going back to where we were in the ‘80s with not just theatre, but all the arts.” In addition to her work on the histories and with Gaslight, Sandberg has donated her talents to other amateur theatre groups in the area, and to local high school productions and charitable events. She also regularly gives talks, seminars and lectures. A mother of three, grandmother and great-grandmother, Hella is also caregiver to her husband. So where does she find the time for so much volunteer work? “As I always say when you talk about volunteers, we do it because we’re passionate about it; you don’t find a volunteer who hates what he or she is doing. You’re passionate about it, you just want to see it happen, so you give of your time. Other people give money because they have lots of money. I don’t have lots of money, but I have a lot of myself to give.” For more information about Gaslight Community Theatre Productions, go to www.gaslighttheatreproductions.com.

MiChael MCCluskey Running Champion Twenty years ago, Mike McCluskey was involved in sports, but “couldn’t run a kilometre without sore knees.” Now 68, he has run 15 marathons, including Boston, New York, Toronto, Detroit, Niagara Falls and Mississauga. But McCluskey doesn’t just run for fun or personal achievement – he runs for local kids. His chosen charity is the Wasaga Beach YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, which provides sponsorships for families that cannot afford the full price of children’s and family programs and camps. “They never turn anyone away, but those programs are not funded through the regular fees you pay when you go to the Y, so they need outside funding to keep those programs open to everyone,” says McCluskey, who has raised almost $7,000 over the past five years by getting local residents and organizations to sponsor his marathon runs. “I like giving back to the community in some way, and children are the future of our community.” These days, McCluskey is “slowing down,” he says, participating in only one marathon a year. But he’s still running – and raising money – almost constantly. He organizes the annual Terry Fox Run in Wasaga Beach, which has raised almost $50,000 towards cancer research and has almost tripled participation since McCluskey took over in 2010. To help others train, whether for

the Terry Fox Run or a Marathon, McCluskey leads weekly runs in Wasaga Beach for the Georgian Triangle Running Club, including a run every Sunday year-round, and a Thursday night pace run in spring and summer. As if that weren’t enough, over the past eight years he has volunteered at a running clinic put on by Beach Chiropractic, helping coach and put together training programs for beginner and intermediate runners. His newest project is the formation of a local Team Unbreakable, offering recreational running groups to kids and teens in support of not only physical, but also mental health. “It’s been proven that exercise helps in fighting off depression and other forms of mental illness, but you don’t have to be a kid at risk to be able to benefit from the confidence and self-esteem you get from running,” explains McCluskey. Helping kids get involved in sports and recreation, helping beginners learn the joy of running, and helping runners become better, stronger, faster and healthier – it all comes down to a simple yet powerful credo for Mike McCluskey. “I can run, so that’s the skill that I use in order to give back to the community.” For more information about the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, go to http://ymcaofsimcoemuskoka.ca/ wasaga-beach-ymca-family-camp/

Labyrinth Champion “Stroll for your soul.” That’s the vision former marketer Jack Marley has for The Collingwood Labyrinth, which will soon provide a new mind-body-spirit experience along The Collingwood Trails Network. Why a labyrinth? “It’s a quiet, contemplative space,” says Marley. “A lot of people, when you say labyrinth they think maze, but there are no tricks in a labyrinth. It’s a circular path leading to a centre space. Walking a labyrinth is very good for meditation and mindfulness.” Marley got involved with the project at the invitation of George Christie, aka “Mr. Trails” in Collingwood. Christie drummed up interest in the labyrinth, got started raising funds and formed a committee. Marley took the reins of the committee, and has helped raise awareness along with over $63,000 towards the project. He also applied for another $50,000 in Aviva funding, and the labyrinth has so far made it to the second round of the voting process Aviva applicants must undergo. Marley, who also volunteers on the Collingwood G&M Hospital community engagement committee and Hospital Foundation board, talks about the labyrinth in terms that bring the project to life. “The design closely resembles a labyrinth that is on the floor of the Chartres cathedral near Paris,” he explains. “The area where the Collingwood Labyrinth will be is very quiet and relaxing, where the Georgian Trail and the Collingwood Trail meet near the Arboretum, so it will be accessible to everybody, and will be a great addition to the trail system.” The area will be a cell-free zone to ensure peace and tranquility, with benches surrounding the labyrinth itself. “It will give people a way to quiet the mind, recover balance, self-reflect, reduce stress and foster well-being. People walk labyrinths to give thanks, grieve, solve a problem, release fear, dream, create, exercise, resolve conflict, or just to have fun.” Ground for the 67-foot diameter circular pathway was cleared this fall at Harbourview Park, and work is expected to begin in the spring of 2015. Jane Mccabe Arboretum Champion In her professional life, working in the “fast-paced, highstress” world of finance, Jane McCabe turned to gardening as a way to feed her soul. “I always found that gardening was a great way to decompress,” she recalls. So it was natural, she says, that when she retired she chose to join the Collingwood Horticultural Society. “It was something I loved and had a passion for, and something that had nothing to do with what I had done before.” That was nine years ago, and today McCabe is the president of the Horticultural Society, whose volunteer members are responsible for arguably the most beautiful corner of Collingwood – the Arboretum. Tucked between First Street and Georgian Bay, the Arboretum is home to more than 160 trees of over 75 different varieties, each lovingly planted and labelled with the Latin tree name, generic name and a numbering system indicating when the tree was planted and dedicated. The 5.5-acre site also boasts flower beds, benches and a pergola, all built and maintained by volunteers, and all the more impressive given that this sylvan setting was once an industrial landfill. “We really have to pay close attention to what we do and how we care for the trees, because three or four feet down there are a lot of obstacles to the tree

22

WinTer 2014

roots, including rubble, glass and carpet remnants,” notes McCabe. In addition to its hands-on work at the Arboretum, the Horticultural Society brings in expert speakers, organizes trips, and every Earth Day, with the help of local high school students, conducts a massive cleanup. The group funds itself through plant sales and dedications of trees and benches in the Arboretum. It’s a huge undertaking, and although the person who nominated McCabe as a Grassroots Hero noted the “hundreds of hours” she personally dedicates to making things grow in our community, McCabe is reluctant to take even a small share of the credit, quick to acknowledge the 55 members of the Horicultural Society, the part-time groundskeeper paid through donations, and ongoing support from the Town of Collingwood. “We have a wide range of people with a wide range of knowledge, and I learn so much from other people,” she enthuses, adding, “there is a lot of gratification, for ourselves, our neighbours, the community and visitors. The Arboretum gets visitors from all over the world, and I love talking to people from Germany or Japan who are just amazed that we have this.” To find out more about the Collingwood Horticultural Society or the Arboretum, go to www.gardenontario.org/site.php/collingwood.

Jim Campbell

Small Halls Champion Jim Campbell’s face lights up when he recalls a halcyon childhood in Duntroon, with Duntroon Hall and its surrounding park as the focal point of the community. “The park and the hall were alive,” he reminisces with a smile. “Kids running around and playing and having fun. It was the gathering place. There were picnics. And baseball games – three games a day, six days a week up until the 1990s – and the games were very much a social thing. In the hall, there were dances, and dinners, and parties, and even bowling leagues – the twolane bowling alley is still there today.” His mother, Vira Campbell, was treasurer for over 20 years of what was then known as Nottawasaga Hall, and Jim gets choked up when he talks about the plaque in her honour that graces a large boulder in the park. “She was a great inspiration,” he says, fighting back tears. So it is that today, raising children of his own in the 1840s house that belonged to his greatgrandfather, Campbell carries on his mother’s legacy in this little corner of Clearview Township. As volunteer president of Duntroon Hall for the past 15 years, he has been instrumental in ensuring that his beloved hall remains just as vibrant and just as much a gathering place as it was in his boyhood. From square dancing to family reunions, weddings, concerts, picnics and, yes, bowling, the 8,000-squarefoot Duntroon Hall can be rented by any group for practically any function for a mere $450 – even though last winter’s hydro bill alone came in at a whopping $2,500 per month. So fundraising is key to ensuring the hall continues to operate. The main fundraising event for the past 15 years was the Know-it-all Ball trivia night. Until this year, with the addition of the Small Halls Festival. Campbell was a driving force behind the first annual Small Halls Festival in October. Celebrating the eight small halls in Clearview (Station on the Green, Avening, Dunedin, Duntroon, Nottawa, Singhampton, Brentwood and Sunnidale), the unique event included music festivals, dinner theatre, art exhibits, comedy, dancing, kids’ activities and culinary events showcasing local chefs, farmers and breweries. The first of its kind in Ontario, the Small Halls Festival was a rousing success, and Campbell and his team are already working on the 2015 version. Campbell couldn’t be more thrilled that both locals and visitors are embracing and supporting the area’s small halls. “The community halls are such a great way to bring people together,” he says. “They are the heart of the community.” Asked why he devotes so much time and effort to the cause, Campbell says it must be in his blood. Then he adds, maybe that even has something to do with why he became an architectural designer. “A lot of people in architecture are a bit utopian or optimists or something,” he laughs. “We want to make everything look nicer, work better, improve, add beauty, create spaces that people can enjoy. “We want to make the world a better place.” For more information about the Small Halls Festival, go to www.smallhallsfestival.ca.

Krista KinG Lighthouse Champion Growing up in Collingwood, Krista King has fond memories of looking out over Collingwood Harbour to the majestic Nottawasaga Lighthouse. “I’ve always loved the water,” she says – so much so that she has been an avid collector of marine and navigational history since girlhood. Today King looks across to the lighthouse and sees a travesty that needs to be rectified. Water damage and disrepair have caused the tower’s outer face to crumble and fall to the ground, and the island upon which it sits – once a nesting site for endangered birds and a popular picnic area for local families – is no longer fit for either avian or human enjoyment. The lighthouse’s former champion, the late Jim Kilgour, was King’s high school biology teacher. “When he passed away in 2012, I decided to help carry the torch and join his committee, but I quickly realized there wasn’t a committee – it was one elderly man trying to get something done.” Never one to back down from a challenge, she gathered together a group of 13 people interested in preserving the lighthouse, and set to work. Her interest in marine history came in handy. She spent months researching and combing through Kilgour’s files, where she stumbled across a petition the federal government required for any “surplus” lighthouses to be designated under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. Collingwood’s lighthouse fell into this category, but by the time King found the petition there were only two weeks left before the expiry date. “I scrambled to get more signatures, launched an online Facebook

26

On The Bay

WinTer 2014

page, and managed to get the petition in on time,” she says. She has until May, 2015 to put together a five-year business plan in order to have the lighthouse designated under the act. “We’re filing to become incorporated so it will always have a preservation group there, and we’re registering as non-profit so we can apply for grants. We want to claim our lighthouse, restore it, protect it and preserve it.” The group finally got access to the lighthouse this past May, sent in engineers, and learned that while the outer damage is extensive, the inner core of the tower is structurally sound. That’s especially good news because earlier estimates had put the pricetag for repairs as high as $8 million. King says it’s looking like the actual cost will fall between $1.5 million and about $3 million – still a lot of money, but feasible with grants plus private and corporate donations. King’s passion, enthusiasm and get-it-done attitude are proving invaluable, but she is quick to point out that more people need to get on board. “We have one more chance to save this wonderful piece of marine history,” she declares. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have it up and running in the next five to 10 years for all to enjoy! Not too many towns have the opportunity for such a beautiful destination place just off their shore, let alone maritime history such as this to share with its visitors and our future generations.” To find out how you can help restore our lighthouse to its former glory, go to www.facebook.com/nottawasaga.lighthouse.

Thinking of volunteering in 2015, but not sure where or how to start? There are lots of opportunities right here in Southern Georgian Bay. story by Judy Ross photography by KRistie & BRenden Woods

“Q

uite simply, it makes me feel good to be able to help people,” says nancy Franks, a remarkably dedicated volunteer who was recently given the prestigious June Callwood Award for her years of help with Hospice. When she moved to this area in 1986 and was working with Community Care Access, she saw that there was no help for people who were dying. since then she has put in countless hours as both a fundraiser and a ‘hands-on’ helper with hospice patients. now, with the opening of Campbell House, a palliative care home in Collingwood, her wish is coming true. “it’s a wonderful feeling,” she adds, “to see a need, work hard toward a goal and then have it become a reality.” ABOVE: Co-op student volunteer Kayla Campbell with Cheemo*, a one-year-old terrier/ pug cross that was available for adoption at the Collingwood animal shelter at the time we went to print. We take very good care of them, and we’re always thrilled to see them find good homes.” UPPER RIGHT: Danielle Brown started at the animal shelter as a co-op student and continued to volunteer, including walking dogs like Marley*, a Siberian husky cross. Every single day people like Nancy Franks are making our community a better place to live. All of us know that what she says is true: volunteering is good for us; it makes us better people. The most recent study on volunteering comes from researchers at the London School of Economics, who examined the relationship between volunteering and happiness in a large group of American adults. They found the more people volunteered, the happier they were. So why aren’t more of us doing it? In the process of researching this article we spoke to people in our community who want to volunteer, know how important it is, but are not sure where to turn. Many retirees who travel or go south in the winter worry that they’re not here for long enough periods of time. Younger people with jobs and families don’t see where they’d find the time. Others are concerned about finding the right fit, or getting committed to something and not being able to follow through. Some of us just need a nudge. Volunteers truly are the glue that holds a community together, and many organizations would simply cease to exist if it weren’t for the support of unpaid volunteers. In the interest of matching up those who’d like to get involved with those who need volunteers, On The Bay took a look at the requirements of 10 local organizations. These are just a few of many volunteer opportunities in our community. There is, it would appear, something for everyone, no matter who you are, what you’re interested in, or how much time you have to give.

Don’t let your vision limit your potential ABOVE: As volunteers in the hospital’s gift shop, Jan Bennett and Helen McCarthy meet many of the people who come and go, stopping by for coffee, gifts and a chat. “Sometimes coming to the hospital is a happy occasion, like a birth, and sometimes it’s not,” says Bennett, “so we have to be ready with a kind word.”

Many organizations need help with fundraising efforts, while others need people to play more of a ‘hands-on’ role.

COLLINGWOOD GENERAL & MARINE HOSPITAL According to Sadie Nixon, manager of volunteer services, it takes 350 volunteers to maintain the level of service the hospital provides on an annual basis. Because of this great demand, Nixon says, “I have to be flexible. We’re used to snowbirds and we don’t expect 12 months’ commitment. I take them when I can get them.” She currently has three programs badly in need of volunteer help: 1. People to help with the patient satisfaction survey programmed on the TV sets in patients’ rooms. Some technical savvy is required for this, but it works well as an icebreaker to having a friendly visit. It takes about two hours anytime during an assigned day. 2. The Emergency Department waiting room needs volunteers to help patients and their families. “The ER can be intimidating,” says Nixon, “so it’s nice to have a kind, caring person there.” All shifts are four hours, either morning or afternoon, on a weekly basis. 3. Volunteers are needed to help long-term care patients get out of their rooms and doing activities in the Activation Room. The time commitment is four hours a day, once a week. “People love this program,” enthuses Nixon, “because they get attached to the patients.” For more information, or to volunteer for any of the above programs, contact Sadie Nixon at 705-445-2550 ext. 8615 or nixons@cgmh.on.ca

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY SOUTH GEORGIAN BAY Habitat’s credo is, “affordable home ownership is a critical need.” This organization has built nine homes since it began in this area in 2003. Families apply and are then selected to receive a new home, and family members help with the build along with volunteer labour and as much donated or costreduced materials as possible. Opportunities for volunteers include working on the build sites, providing food and drink to volunteers, helping in the ReStore (donated goods and building materials), and being part of the family selection committee. “We’re excited because we have just purchased a property in Collingwood and are now fundraising with the hope to start building next summer,” says executive director Joy Fleury. “We have a wide variety of jobs for volunteers, and lots of need with our new build in the works.” A volunteer application can be found online at www.habitatgeorgianbay.ca, or visit the office at the ReStore Centre 155 Sandford Fleming Drive. HOSPICE GEORGIAN TRIANGLE Hospice is celebrating the recent opening of Campbell House in Collingwood, a six-bedroom palliative care home that has increased Hospice’s ability to help patients at the end of life in our community. “We have over 200 volunteers,” explains executive director Debbie Kesheshian, “and they provide us with an amazing range of help.” Training sessions are offered twice a year: a 30-hour fundamental course in the basics of palliative care. But, as Kesheshian adds, “there is also a need for volunteers to help in the kitchen, work at the reception desk, do errands … these jobs are a good way to get a feel for what we do and decide if you’re ready to train.” The biggest need is for “companioning at home.” There are only six beds at Campbell House, and most people want to die at home. Volunteers visit the home in order to give the caregivers a break. A volunteer application can be downloaded from the website at www. hospicegeorgiantriangle.com, or contact Debbie Kesheshian at 705-444-2555.

BEAVER VALLEY OUTREACH This not-for-profit community-based organization has been providing programs and services for people in the Blue Mountains since 1983. “Our volunteers are so inspiring,” enthuses Melri Wright, the volunteer coordinator who works with over 200 volunteers. Help is needed to run the Treasure Shop (donated goods and clothing) on Bruce Street in Thornbury, and to keep a variety of services running. Many of the programs are for children, including early morning programs where a hot breakfast is cooked and served in the school. A volunteer resource kit is available on the website, www.bvo.ca. Finding The Right Fit Volunteering is most successful, both for the volunteer and the organization, if volunteers give some thought to what will work best for them. Ask yourself the following questions: • Would you like to work with adults, children or animals? • Do you prefer to work as part of a team, or alone, on your own at home? • Are you better behind the scenes, or in a more visible role? • How much time are you willing to commit? • How consistent can you be? • How much responsibility are you willing to take on? • What skills can you offer? • What causes are important to you? You are sure to find something that will fit your interests and schedule, and the rewards are incalculable. HOME FOR LIFE This cooperative community project was set up in December 2012 as a way to help seniors to stay in their own homes. “We focus on seniors in the South Georgian Bay area,” says interim program manager Anne Marie Underhill, “but not all of our clients are seniors; some just need help managing at home on their own.” Volunteers are carefully screened and trained before going into clients’ homes to help with light housekeeping, pick up groceries, or just have a friendly visit. A growing need is for volunteers who can give tech support, including setting up Skype, helping to program smart phones or computers, etc. A flexible schedule allows volunteers to give as little or as much time as they want. RAY’S PLACE The Mission Statement of Ray’s Place in Creemore is “to encourage youth to stay in school until they have received a license, diploma or degree.” To achieve this, Ray’s Place runs a variety of programs including “Rent a Youth,” which links local youth with part-time work available locally. Volunteers check out facilities or homes before the kids are sent there. Ray’s Place also has volunteer tutors (teachers) to help with school work, and runs workshops for kids and parents on subjects such as handling finances. “We are entirely a volunteer organization, with no paid staff.” says Tony Fry, founder and volunteer, who started the organization (with the late Jim Vandewater) as a way to stop the local kids from scrawling graffiti on local buildings. (It worked; the kids had something else to do). Fry suggests that anyone interested could call anytime … or just come by between 3 and 5 p.m. on Friday afternoons when boys and girls aged 8 - 12 drop in for board games and activities. For more information, go to www.raysplaceyrc.com or call Tony Fry at 705-466-3663. Ray’s Place is located on Caroline Street in Creemore, behind Cardboard Castles.

BIG BROTHERS, BIG SISTERS OF THE GEORGIAN TRIANGLE The message from executive director Jarvis Strong is, “We love to tell you about all our programs, so come on in and say hello.” BBBS currently has about 100 volunteers including the board of directors, and the organization is always looking for more help. Volunteers are needed for one-on-one programs like In-School Mentoring and Homework Clubs, as well as various group activities. Traditionally the concept of Big Brother, Big Sister was to match an adult with a child for a long-term, steady, positive relationship. “We have more girls matched than boys, and many boys on a waiting list, so we have a new program to get more men interested in what we do.” This ‘new’ Boys Club is an after-school program held in Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Clearview and Meaford. Volunteers work alongside a staff member and other male volunteers doing activities with boys aged 9 to 12. The commitment could be as little as one-and-a-half hours, once a month. “Of course more time would be fantastic,” says Strong, adding, “We literally have something for everyone, no matter how much time you have to give.” To find out more, go to www.bigbrothersbigsistersgeorgiantriangle.org, call 705-445-2330, or stop into the office at 129 Hurontario st. (above Robinson’s Paint).

THE GEORGIAN TRIANGLE HUMANE SOCIETY This much-needed resource relies entirely on volunteer support to run the animal shelter at 549 10th line in Collingwood, and the Treasure Tails used goods shop on Hurontario Street. “We hold orientation programs twice a month for anyone considering helping us,” says shelter manager Sonya Reichel. The five main requirements are dog care and walking, cat care, reception, working at the Treasure Tails store, and help with events, marketing and fundraising. The Humane Society can accommodate any kind of schedule – for instance, dog walking is just a drop-in, once-a-week commitment. “And there’s a social component – our volunteers really get involved and become part of a team,” says Reichel, “with coffee-breaks and goodies.” For more information, go to www.gths.ca or call Sonya Reichel at 705445-5204, ext. 225.

ELEPHANT THOUGHTS This educational outreach operation, which opened in Collingwood in 2002, relies on volunteers from age 14 to 85. The mandate is to “make sure every child in Canada and across the world receives an exceptional, inspired education despite the geographic and economic barriers they face.” Volunteers run the Elephant Thoughts educational store and help with workshops and fun events. “We also need volunteers to help with office administration and fundraising,” says director general Tara Bailey, “and we can customize a volunteer program just for you.” She adds Elephant Thoughts is a good place to get kids interested in volunteering, doing things like taking care of the animals in the store after school. Visit the store at 10138 Hwy 26 (across from Hyundai), call 705-444-2012, or check out the website at www.elephantthoughts.com. Charity does begin at home, as the old adage states. And here in Southern Georgian Bay we have countless opportunities to play a part in the giving spirit of our community. Many organizations need help with fundraising efforts, while others need people to play more of a ‘hands-on’ role. Wherever, or however, you may choose to offer up time and energy, you will be warmly welcomed. As Jarvis Strong, executive director of Big Brothers, Big Sisters expresses it: “It’s wonderful to see volunteers making a connection. I watch them being tentative at first. Then they make a connection with a particular child. And then, for sure, they’ll want to continue as a volunteer.” ❧

Redefining the Ski Chalet Part treehouse, part architectural showcase, this contemporary weekend home near Osler Bluff uses glass, open spaces and natural materials to bring the architect owners closer to nature story by Judy Ross ❧ photography by deRek TRask

hen two architects who spend their weekdays in Toronto working on large urban projects decide to build a weekend retreat in the country, the results are sure to be interesting and most likely unconventional. Peter Ortved and his wife Maureen O’Shaughnessy are both principals at the Toronto firm of CS&P Architects and specialize in building multi-million-dollar public spaces. “We don’t really do much residential work at all,” explains Ortved, “so designing our own cabin in the woods was really a labour of love and a very different experience.” From the outside their cabin is also very different from its neighbours on a wooded crescent close to the Osler Bluff ski club. The exterior is nothing like the traditional chalets or post and beam houses that are scattered about the base of the ski hills. Instead of a sprawling wooden structure, this glass and steel chalet consists of two very simple and identically proportioned peaked roof buildings, similar to a child’s drawing of a house. Linking them is a two-storey glass enclosed bridge, or breezeway. The roofs of the two buildings have no projecting eaves, so that the metal siding seems to form a wrap over the roof and down both side walls, which are solid. “We wanted to keep the materials simple and limited,” says O’Shaughnessy, “so we clad the exterior walls and roof in corrugated steel and filled two ends with glass.” From the outset the idea was to create a big barn-like space imbued with openness and light. The glass ends were positioned to optimize available light and bring in as much of the landscape as possible. When inside, the feeling is that of being in a treehouse with sunlight streaming in and cedar branches swaying slightly in the winter wind. At the back of the wooded half acre there’s a gentle slope leading down to a creek and a network of snowshoe trails. When the lot was being cleared the goal was to save as many trees as possible, and once the building

was complete the natural setting was enhanced with dug-up boulders, wood-chip paths and additional native shrubs and trees. When the deciduous trees are bare in winter, a screen of cedars still provides privacy from the road. The second storey of one building houses the principal living space, a priority in the design to allow views through the treetops. Massive double-glazed windows

are 12 feet tall at the peak and have thin aluminum mullions that almost disappear and allow for unimpeded views, one side facing east to the rising sun, the other to the setting sun. Downstairs, at grade level, there’s a family room and two guest bedrooms with large sliding doors that maximize the light as well. In the second building, across the glass breezeway, is another wing of the 2,435-square-foot house. The upper level master suite has the same view to the woods and opens to the cedar deck. At the front is a combined laundry and powder room. Below this is a two-car garage and storage room. Unique garage doors made of plexiglass panels with tubular channels for insulation were chosen for their transparent quality. During the day, light filters into the garage interior and, at night, the indoor light shines through to the outside. Ortved and O’Shaughnessy both credit their builder, Tony LaChance of Blue Bay Homes in Thornbury, with much of the success of their project and with bringing innovative solutions to some of the structural challenges. architects was a great experience but confesses that, “It was the most challenging house I’ve ever built. It is really just an open box with glass ends so the engineering aspect was really demanding. Right from the beginning, when setting the frame on the site, everything had to be perfectly level and square.” As he explains, all openings had to be precise. The fact that the drywall runs seamlessly into the glass with no trim or moulding meant there was nothing to cover up any gaps. There was no room for error. Unlike many of the neighbouring homes in this primarily winter ski community, this weekend home was intended for year-round use, so Ortved and O’Shaughnessy had to consider things like cross ventilation for summer breezes and solar reflective blinds to keep the rooms cool without air conditioning. Oversized sliding doors open from every room, some to a cedar deck that spans the back of the two buildings. In winter the heating comes from an in-floor, gasfired, radiant system and is supplemented in the living room by a double-sided wood-burning fireplace from Belgium, which keeps the space cosily warm. One end of the freestanding fireplace has open shelving for stacked wood. Clad in Corten steel, the pre-rusted finish of the fireplace was replicated as an accent in other parts of the house, such as the front entrance door and the legs of the dining table. “When people first saw our chalet they expected LEFT: In the master bedroom O’Shaughnessy positioned her ‘reading’ chair toward the view. A wall niche over the bed replaces a headboard. RIGHT: A limited palette of materials was used throughout the house. In the master bathroom the floors are large format limestone tile and the granite counter has a leatherlike finish.

it to be cold and minimal inside,” admits Ortved, “but we purposely chose materials and furniture to warm it up.” An abundance of wood is one of the key warming factors. The ceiling is planked in rough sawn cedar, which gives off a golden glow at night from low-voltage halogen uplights placed strategically around the room. The two architects chose recycled hemlock barn boards for the flooring on the second level and, for the ground floor, they put in etched and stained concrete that looks like oversized ceramic tile. All the floors have radiant heating and scattered about are interesting patterned carpets. The couple

For two years now Ortved and O’Shaughnessy have been enjoying the allseason nature of their weekend home. They especially love winter, when the snow piles up outside their door, the wood fire burns slowly in the two-sided fireplace, and despite the vast walls of glass all is cosy and warm inside their treehouse-inspired chalet. ❧ LEFT: The homeowners, architects Peter Ortved and Maureen O’Shaughnessy, with Marley. hen Jenny and Michael Rankin* came to the realization that their five-year-old daughter Megan’s daily meltdowns were unsettling the whole family, they decided to get help. Jenny, who works for a community services agency, and Michael, an elementary school teacher, were

at a loss as to how to manage their bright but anxious little girl. The entire household was on edge, including eight-year-old Henry who, when he wasn’t fighting with his little sister, retreated further and further into his shell. Even Murphy, their standard poodle, seemed stressed out.

“It’s hard to manage the intense emotions of grief. You wake up in the morning thinking, ‘I’m feeling better today.’ Then there’s some cue or a memory in the afternoon, and it washes over you like a tidal wave.” Theresa Machin “Basically,” says Michael, “we had exhausted most of our strategies in dealing with our daughter.” Both Jenny and Michael were feeling insecure about their abilities as parents and worse yet, wondered if there was something seriously wrong with the little demon they loved so much. The conflict in the household was having an impact on their marriage as well. When they talked to their family physician about the problems, the Rankins learned that because their doctor was one of the 40 members of the Georgian Bay Family Health Team (GBFHT), they had access to a full range of mental health services available at no cost. OHIP would pay for everything. The doctor referred Megan to Gillian Harris-Sopinka, a youth-family counsellor with GBFHT, and after completing an assessment, Harris-Sopinka began meeting with Megan alone, following up with her parents every few weeks. “Often mums and dads come to us saying their children are troublesome or defiant,” says Harris-Sopinka. “The kids don’t have the experience to understand why they feel the way they do. The parents only see bad behaviour; I try to help everyone understand why the child is behaving the way they are.” Little Megan Rankin saw her counsellor for about 10 months. “It was a very positive experience,” says Jenny. “Gillian gave us some new tools that really

It was more an issue of will and personality,” says Michael. During that time, Harris-Sopinka also taught Megan’s older brother Henry some techniques (meditation and a squeeze ball) to help him manage his anxiety. “He was pretty stressed and holding a lot in,” says his mother. Soon after, Jenny and Michael, who have been married 13 years, began seeing GBFHT couples counsellor, Theresa Machin, who uses a short-term (10 to 15 sessions) therapy method known as EFT (emotionally focused therapy) developed by Sue Johnson, an Ottawa-based researcher and author of the book Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love. “[EFT] is a lot of work, but we are no longer caught up in a destructive spiral,” says Michael, adding, “It worked very well for us. I tell all my male friends about it.” Both Jenny and Michael want their story told to help lessen the stigma around “getting help when you need it.” The Rankins are clearly a poster family for the many mental health services available to residents of the region, and they would like to help spread the word. With five full-time adult counsellors and the equivalent of three youth counsellors (including two job-sharing positions), the Georgian Bay mental health team last year saw more than 9,000 referrals from family physicians in Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Creemore, Meaford and Thornbury, making our region one of the best-served in the province. “We have very good mental health services in this area,” says Thornburybased therapist Donnalee Hobson, who runs a small private practice as well as being employed full-time by GBFHT where she sees individual patients and runs several different group therapies (see sidebar). “And it’s free if your doctor is part of the family health team,” she adds. “We have the best group of youth therapists I have ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. Mind Over

Matter The mental health benefits of mindfulness Mindfulness is a form of meditation that has its roots in Buddhist teaching. Its goal is to achieve a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations without judging them. In 1979, Jon Kabat Zinn, a researcher at the University of Massachussetts, developed a secular form of mindfulness that has proven useful in managing anxiety, depression and chronic pain. Since then, countless studies have shown that the practice is good for our bodies and our minds, that it fosters altruism and compassion, enhances relationships, helps manage stress, improves attention and can even help us lose weight. As Kabat-Zinn says: “It’s about living your life as if it really mattered, moment by moment, by moment by moment.” Donnalee Hobson is the Georgian Bay Family Health Team’s (GBFHT) mindfulness guru. “There is Mindfulness in everything,” says the Thornbury-based therapist, who has been teaching the practice for decades. In addition to offering a four-week introduction to Mindfulness Meditation, GBFHT also runs several group therapies in the Collingwood area, all of them incorporating mindfulness as a tool to help enhance and change behaviour. “People are sometimes reticent about group therapy,” says counsellor Theresa Machin, “but they end up feeling less alone. They say to themselves, ‘why would that person be here? He looks so normal.’ Group therapy demystifies their condition.” Following are some of the programs run by the GBFHT mental health team.

Introduction to Mindfulness: Learn how to stay in the moment and how it will help you become more effective in your life. taking Control of your Life: If you have trouble in relationships, are impulsive and overly emotional or subject to mood swings, this program teaches interpersonal skills and emotional control using mindfulness (adult and teen groups). Life Beyond Pain: Work on managing chronic pain through meditation and other strategies in addition to rehabilitation and medical treatment. Hold Me tight: Helps couples strengthen their emotional connection through Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and end the destructive patterns that undermine their relationship. Whether you’re at the end of your tether, or “you’re at the point in your marriage where you feel like you’re living with a roommate,” Hobson says, “EFT can be extremely effective.” Feeling Good: Aims to help people suffering from depression to improve motivation and think more realistically through relaxation and mindfulness meditation. the Weight Loss Puzzle: Participants meet twice a week for eight weeks. The first half hour of each 1.5-hour session is devoted to exercise. The remainder includes lectures and workbook exercises examining the psychological barriers to weight loss. “Losing weight,” says Hobson, “is about developing a new mindset so you don’t feel deprived or give up on yourself.” team Unbreakable: A therapeutic running group for teens in grades 10 to 12, designed to help manage anger and get along with others. hat’s the good news. The not-so-good news, according to GBFHT’s mental health team leader John Lush, is that he and his counsellors are set up to deal primarily with mild to moderate mental illnesses. “We don’t deal with major mental illnesses like severe bipolar, schizophrenia and serious psychoses,” he says. Those issues are referred to Community Mental Health operating out of the Collingwood G&M Hospital. And with just one psychiatrist on staff, wait times can be as long as 12 months, Lush says. Individuals who attend the hospital Emergency ward experiencing a psychological crisis (suicide attempts, mental breakdowns, homelessness issues) are usually referred to Wendat, a psychiatric rehabilitation program based in Midland that provides crisis intervention. But the reality is that some of the serious cases are referred to Lush and his team. “It’s hard to turn people down,” he says. “We do what we can to stabilize them.” Another issue, according to Lush, is a chronic shortage of provincial funding, which means that wait times are now as long as two months for adults and three to four weeks for children. For this reason the team focuses as much as possible on short-term therapies. “We try to wrap up cases in about six sessions,” says Harris-Sopinka. At least, that’s the goal. But, as Lush points out, “People bring decades of issues in with them and sometimes it’s hard to deal with that in six to 10 sessions. We try

to give people coping mechanisms so they can manage their issues in the future. But we carry a handful of people for years. ” Anxiety and depression are the most common manifestations of mental illness the team deals with. GBFHT also offers counselling for people going through divorce, suffering the loss of a loved one, adjusting to an empty nest or retirement. There is also help available for anger management, low self-esteem, loneliness, weight problems, addiction issues, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorders, insomnia and bullying, to name only a few. “We see people from across the board,” says Lush, “from the very affluent to the severely marginalized.”

There was work and the children. I didn’t have time to think. Until everything was gone. The kids grown up, and then no husband. Just like that. I felt so cold.” Anna began doing what she describes as “crazy things.” She sold her house and her car, lived temporarily with her sister and then moved from Toronto to Wasaga Beach. “That’s when I started running. I couldn’t sit still. My daughter said I looked like someone who wasn’t there. A zombie. I was running but I wasn’t getting anywhere.” Anna’s sister and daughter urged her to get help, and her family doctor referred her to GBFHT’s mental health services, where she began seeing Theresa Machin. “Grief,” explains Machin, “is not really an illness, but it’s hard to manage the

iven the wide range of GBFHT’s services, one might wonder why anyone would seek out private therapy, which can cost from $80 to $100 per hour. But therapists such as Machin, Lush and Harris-Sopinka acknowledge that not all mental health issues can be resolved in a matter of weeks, and that some patients might prefer the privacy that private practices afford. “Not everyone wants to run into their friends or co-workers in the waiting room,” says Harris-Sopinka. Jody Bowle-Evans, a physician-therapist with a private practice in Creemore, specializes in treating dissociative states (PTSD, multiple personality disorder and borderline personality disorder) resulting from childhood trauma, usually sexual or physical abuse. “I have patients who say they told everyone [about the abuse] but no one stopped it,” she says. “You don’t recover easily. You learn to avoid emotions. I have to teach them to feel again.” Sometimes this can take years, and many of Bowle-Evans’s patients have been with her a long time. Although her services are also paid by OHIP because she is an MD, what she does is not the same as the counselling provided through the GBFHT. “My lens is different than theirs,” she says. Lucy Marlin runs a private counselling service in Meaford that specializes in retirement transition and finding meaning. Retirement, she says, is often a time of great self-examination. “People look forward to retirement. They have all these expectations and

They need to find new meaning in their lives.” Difficulties adjusting to retired life can manifest themselves in depression, anxiety, marital strife, and alcohol and substance abuse. Some people deliberately isolate themselves as a way of coping. “Redefining who you are is crucial,” says Marlin, “but it’s difficult.” Marlin, who also does telephone and online counselling (through a secure server), says there is a real need for awareness of the services that are available in this area. “I always hope people can reach out for help. They need to know that it’s not just their struggle; that there are many others going through what they are going through. And that there is help out there.”

A

nna Peterson knows this well. This year when the sudden death of a member of her church, a man of 51 whom she barely knew, triggered powerful emotions that confused and overwhelmed her, she once again sought help from Theresa Machin at GBFHT. “I couldn’t stop crying,” says Peterson, whose son, also 51, is alive but is unemployed and living alone in an apartment in Toronto struggling with mental health issues of his own. “My son just sits there wasting his life. I always thought that one day he’d sort himself out. He is my oldest. You have such big dreams for them.” Machin helped Peterson understand that her tears were grief; grief at the loss of the son she had always hoped for. “I walked into her office,” Peterson recalls of her first session with Machin, “and she was bubbling with insights. She made me see that I had to let it go, that there is no sense in agonizing over something I cannot change.” Like Peterson, Jenny and Michael Rankin describe their experience with counselling as “life changing.” It has become a tool they continue to use. Donnalee Hobson program with Donnalee Hobson at GBFHT (see sidebar), and this past summer the family returned to Harris-Sopinka for a few “refresher sessions.” Harris-Sopinka says early intervention is crucial for children like Megan. She firmly believes that the kind of work she and the other youth counsellors are doing will mean fewer depressed, anxious and troubled adults in the future. “With early intervention,” she says, “people have much less chance of going into adulthood trying to hide their problems.” As for Anna Peterson, today she is so busy with her work at the church and her many friendships that some days she falls asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow. She thinks of herself as a happy, positive person. “But, I can’t stress enough, when you feel negative like I did, get help” she says, her green eyes bright and clear. “You can have all kinds of friends, but sometimes you need another kind of support, someone you can pour out your heart to.” ❧ For more information on mental health services in Southern Georgian Bay, go to www.gbfht.ca/Our_Health_Team/our_programs and click on “Mental Health”. The downtown Collingwood side street boasts a busy pub, a bustling pool hall, an auto body shop and a thrift store. You won’t find any burgers on the menu; the Grey County beef short rib on a baguette with aged white cheddar and crispy onions will have to do. Step inside, however, and you’ll soon find you’re someplace special. The décor is as casual as any pub – a little more stylish and elegant perhaps, but nothing pretentious. Black leather chairs flank simple white birch tables; cow-skin rugs decorate the exposed brick walls. The hardwood floors are scuffed; exposed ductwork on the ceiling gives the space a loft-like feel. The tone is laid-back and relaxed. At the back of the room, in the open kitchen, diners at the bar can watch as black-clad staff prep and cook, taking direction from the maestro. That would be Cabin Bistro’s chef and owner, Justin Miller, whose vision and skill are legendary among local foodies. Miller, a 30-something husband and father of two, is a graduate of George Brown College’s culinary program. After graduating, he honed his cooking skills as sous-chef at Tundra, the Toronto Hilton Hotel’s lobby restaurant noted for its commitment to Canadian cuisine featuring local, seasonal ingredients. A glance at the menu confirms that Miller has brought that same commitment to Cabin Bistro, which first opened in 2010 at the other end of town in Cranberry Mews before moving to its current site in 2013. The new location has resulted in “a lot more walk-in traffic,” says Miller. However, hungry clients who wander in looking for a beer and a grilled cheese sandwich may be in for a surprise. They’ll have to settle instead for an apple and sage croque monsieur made with Ontario double-cream brie and honeymaple ham on grilled sourdough. They won’t find any burgers on the menu, either; the Grey County beef short rib on a baguette with aged white cheddar and crispy onions will have to do. Chef Miller is big news these days in Collingwood. For the second year in a row, he beat two other local chefs to win the Road to the Royal Chef Challenge held in September at the GNE, going on to pit his skills against five other regional winners in the semi-finals at the Royal Agricultural Winter

ABOVE: Chef and owner Justin Miller has earned accolades for his simple yet creative cuisine, using local ingredients whenever possible.

Fair. At the GNE Miller whipped up a three-course menu using the “secret ingredients” lavender, wasabi paste and local eggs. His winning plates, created under the watchful eyes of emcee Ted Reader, were a beet and goatcheese salad served with a bisque; wasabi marinated beef tenderloin with sweet potato mash and crème demi glaze; and for dessert lavender fritters and honey sorbet. The same innovative use of flavours and presentation goes into his menu at Cabin Bistro, where my husband and I were excited to be celebrating our wedding anniversary. On a Saturday night in late fall, the cosy room was nearly full, mostly with couples like ourselves. Our server said she was new to the job and immediately put us at ease by asking for our patience. The specials included a wild mushroom soup and bison tartare topped with a

fried egg. The latter sounded particularly tempting, but in the interest of pacing myself I opted for the harvest kale salad that turned out to be poetry on a platter: slivers of crisp apple, macerated cranberries, toasted walnuts and sautéed cubes of butternut squash, all tossed on a bed of tender baby kale and bathed in an apple-cider emulsion. My husband, Basil, had the mushroom soup: an earthy bowl of sautéed then pureed shiitake and oyster mushrooms along with dried porcini, garnished with slivered green onions and kernels of local corn – as woodsy and sweet as a stroll in the autumn forest. The wine list at Cabin Bistro is very small: three reds and three whites to choose from. I ordered a California chardonnay with my salad and French merlot/Bordeaux with the main course; both perfectly respectable, but given Miller’s emphasis on all things local I was surprised there were no Ontario wines on offer. For the main course I chose the beef short ribs, which according to Miller are cooked for a full 24 hours in a 180-degree oven until they are meltingly tender. He serves them surrounded by feather-light gnocchi seasoned with truffle oil and cheese. A ragu of wild mushrooms accompanies the dish, and

The mushroom soup is an earthy bowl of sautéed then pureed shiitake and oyster mushrooms along with dried porcini, garnished with slivered green onions and kernels of local corn – as woodsy and sweet as a stroll in the autumn forest. a house-made relish of smoked tomatoes adds spice and character to the plate. The same smoky condiment can be found in the woodland bruschetta appetizer. If it came in a jar I would have bought some to take home with me. My husband’s house-made organic pumpkin ravioli were filled with whipped ricotta, spiced walnuts and sage, and smothered in a brown butter sauce. The pasta was tender and fresh; the filling a tribute to the wonders of the season. And if these offerings seem a little on the light side, larger appetites than ours have the option of adding lobster or truffle oil to their order for $8 and $4 respectively. Basil and I opted instead for a side of asparagus to round out our meal. Desserts were vanilla rice pudding with apple crisp, an artisan cheese plate, and chocolate served three ways. The cheese plate featuring cheddar, brie and goat cheese – all from Quebec – comes with house-made bagel chips, apple slices and pickled beets. But it was the chocolate three ways that took the big prize: a chocolate-dipped profiterole, three velvety house-made truffles, and my favourite: a demi-tasse of rich hot chocolate topped with melting miniature marshmallows. It was a perfect anniversary treat. Chef Miller came by our table at the end of the evening. He talked about his decision to leave the big city and open a restaurant in Collingwood, and of his access to great local produce and artisan foods. I told him Collingwood is lucky to have him and he returned the compliment: “I love it here,” he said. “Life is good.” ❧

Blink Eyewear This new full-service optical boutique carries a wide range of glasses, contact lenses, pediatric eyewear, sports eyewear and goggles. “I love to cater to the unique or challenging fits,” says owner Jessie Strype. “I try to carry products that will fit very petite faces, comply with skin allergies, accommodate very complex prescriptions, and most importantly, pediatric or toddler fittings. The frame line that I have come to know and love for my little patients is Miraflex. It is unbelievably durable, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and most importantly, comfortable and fun to wear.” Adults can find collections from Etnia Barcelona, Maui Jim, Ray Ban, Zeal Optics, Vera Wang and Miraflex, as well as designer lines that are exclusive to Blink, including Rye & Lye, X-Ide, Italia Independent, Prodesign Denmark, Hunter and Stella, and Masunaga. “I carry a number of smaller, unique collections, and 90 per cent are exclusive to me,” notes Strype. “Glasses are such an accessory now, you don’t want to see a bunch of other people wearing the same thing.” Strype, who has been in the eyewear industry for almost 15 years and a licensed optician for five years, will fill any doctor’s eyeglass or contact lens prescription. Other services include contact lens fitting and instruction, fittings and repair of glasses, and Irlen lens fittings. Imagine waking up every morning with your makeup already professionally applied. Permanent makeup artist and certified esthetician JeongAe Davidson’s new business specializes in cosmetic tattooing for eyebrows, eyeliner and lips. “With permanent make-up, you can look your best at all times,” Davidson explains, adding she is highly trained and qualified in the most advanced techniques and methods. Davidson also offers a skin rejuvenation procedure called micro-needling, also known as skin needling or Collagen Induction Therapy. It involves the use of a device that contains fine needles, which are used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin ‘injury.’ Each puncture creates a channel and the body fills these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin, triggering improvement in skin texture and firmness as well as reduction in scars, pore size and stretch marks. “The results that micro/skin needling provides are equal to or better than other procedures such as lasers and other micro-injury techniques with less cost and effort,” says Davidson. Regular esthetic services include facials and AHA peels, waxing and tinting, manicure/pedicure, threading and eyelash extensions. 37 Griffin Road, Collingwood 705-446-4132 www.eyethebrow.com Hours: By appt.

Georgian Family Chiropractic Husband-and-wife chiropractors Krista and Adam Markew have opened this “Life By Design” certified chiropractic office in Wasaga Beach. Life By Design is an integrative approach built on the principle that people need strategies for optimal health. These strategies address brain-body communication (Power By Design), nutrition (Eat By Design), mobility (Move By Design) and thought processes (Think By Design). “We address the chiropractic component, but we think there’s more than that to health,” explains Adam. “Your body has certain requirements and if you meet those requirements, you’re moving towards health at a greater rate. We educate people on health and get them to be empowered and motivated to take healthier steps.” Wife Krista specializes in pediatrics and pregnant moms, while Adam has a background with sports injuries but has expanded his focus to help all patients improve their overall health, mobility and quality of life. The approach, says Adam, is to develop strong relationships with patients. “I definitely want people to feel like they’re part of the family,” he says. In addition to personalized sessions and treatment, there are monthly seminars

on all of the Life By Design facets. The seminars are free for clients, who can also bring a friend or family member. 801 River Rd. Niagara Escarpment Outfitters The Collingwood location of this retail store has been such a success, owner Reg Sheffield has opened a second shop on the main street in Creemore. Like the Collingwood location, the Creemore store carries an assortment of local and regionally sourced or inspired gifts, souvenirs, art, food, lifestyle gear, crafts, woodworking and original brand apparel. “We’ve partnered with more local people and developed another significant local brand for the Creemore area to add to our portfolio of local brands,” says Sheffield. The new brand is called Croi Mor (“big heart” in Gaelic and pronounced “Creemore”), and it includes logoed clothing such as hoodies and T-shirts, as well as beer steins, coffee mugs, serving platters and even local preserves. “We want to be known as the largest local, original brand gift and lifestyle in the region,” says Sheffield, adding, “with the expansion of our local brands, it will help me develop my online presence with the long-term goal to develop an online store.” 146 Mill Street, Creemore 705-466-6950 www.escarpmentoutfitters.com Hours: Wed. – Mon. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Right At Home Canada Georgian Triangle “We are a home health care provider of medical and non-medical services for seniors and disabled adults in their home, wherever their home is for them.” That’s how co-owner Nancy Esson describes the new Georgian Triangle franchise of Right At Home Canada. Services include companionship, homemaking, meal prep, shopping, errands, transportation, hygiene and personal care, physical assistance, nursing and therapy, access to trained dementia specialists, hospitalto-home transition and post-operative care. “There’s a need in this community for home healthcare,” says Esson. “We recognized that and thought we would fill a gap. We researched the various home healthcare businesses and decided on Right At Home.” Founded in 1995, Right At Home has over 300 offices in the U.S., 12 locations in Canada, and operations in eight countries worldwide. The Georgian Triangle office, which serves all of Southern Georgian Bay, currently has six employees, including caregivers, companions, personal support workers, nurses, a therapist, registered practical nurses and footcare specialists. “We generally focus on offering a continuous service to our clients; as their needs become greater we can provide additional services,” says Esson. “What sets us apart is that we have access to a full range of continuity of care services. Our main overriding approach is that we provide the level of service to people that we would like to have provided to our own loved ones. We build a relationship between the family and a specific caregiver or team, depending on what the needs are, so everyone is on the same page about the level of care and how their family member is responding.” 13 Ontario St., Collingwood 705-293-5500 www.rightathomecanada.com Hours: Mon. – Fri. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. On call 24/7.

TRANSFORMATIONS Curiosity House Books Creemore’s beloved local bookshop has new owners who are committed to maintaining the store’s well-earned reputation as a “community and cultural hub.” Husband and wife Rina Barone and Chris Dunk purchased the business from Ralph Hicks. Barone has a background in journalism and TV production, and Dunk is a “long-time book lover.” “Our favourite places in the world are always book stores, so this is kind of a dream come true in a way,” says Dunk, adding, “It’s a very community feel – the bookstore is kind of like the hub where everyone comes in and chats. We have a very supportive community and supportive local authors, and we plan to be here for many years.” The couple will be adding more in-store events and children’s events, while continuing to promote local authors through author readings and book launches. The staff will remain intact, notes Dunk, adding, “a lot of the reason people come into the store is the very knowledgeable staff and high customer service.” Curiosity House will also continue to host a variety of off-site events at the Collingwood Library, Avening Hall and other local venues. 178 Mill Street, Creemore 705-466-3400 www.curiosityhousebooks.com Hours: Sun. – Fri. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

After opening her first physiotherapy clinic in Meaford eight years ago, Julie Young has relocated her practice into the new Don Bumstead & Family Medical Centre. With double the square footage, the clinic has been able to expand its staff and services to keep up with increasing demand. In addition to two full-time physiotherapists and two massage therapists, “I hired a registered kinesiologist who offers conditioning programs for elderly people at high risk for falls,” says Young. “There are four private treatment rooms and a large gym facility where we will be doing conditioning as well as one-on-one personal training for all ages.” Being in the new medical centre means Young and her team can be in direct communication with the doctors, which she says improves patient outcomes. 730 Sykes Street N., Meaford 519-538-4500 www.georgianbayphysio.com Hours: Mon., Wed. & Fri. 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tues. & Thurs. 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Evening hours for massage therapy by appt.

Lucy Marlin has moved her counselling service from Meaford’s main street to a more private location. “It’s off the beaten path, which a lot of my clients find very comfortable,” says Marlin. “It’s a really confidential setting, while also being nice and bright and welcoming.” The new office also provides room for expansion down the road. Marlin primarily sees people who are struggling with retirement transition, as well as adolescents. “I see them as quite related,” she notes. “A lot of the same coping mechanisms come into play.” In addition to private one-on-one sessions, Marlin is now running groups for

adolescents. She also offers telephone counselling, and recently upgraded her training in e-counselling to offer online help (through a secure server) to people who have social issues or are homebound, travelling, etc. “It’s like having a personal journal that responds to you in a clinical way – a virtual space is created between me and my client,” she explains. “It can shift into face-to-face counselling, but it doesn’t have to.” Unit 6, 36 Trowbridge Street E., Meaford 226-662-7777 By appointment (daytime and evening hours)

Petals in Thyme This Wasaga Beach flower shop has more than doubled its space with its recent move to a refurbished historic building. “The building had been derelict for five years, and in the past it has been a convenience store, real estate office, church, corner market and taxidermist,” laughs owner Abigail Hitchens, adding the extensive renovation has been a “labour of love.” Primarily a flower shop, the store offers bouquets, plants and creative floral arrangements for any occasion from a grand wedding to an intimate anniversary. It also houses a “relaxed art gallery” featuring the work of local artists and artisans, from paintings, pottery, glass and photography to aprons, custom cushions, felted goods and fudge. Thornbury Laser Clinic Joni Fitzgerald has expanded her laser clinic in Thornbury to offer Pulsating Electromagnet Field Therapy (PEFT), a non-invasive, side effect-free technology that may assist with depression; inflammation; joint, bone and muscle conditions; and body cell rejuvenation. “The Mayo Clinic is doing tests with it, and the doctors have said so far they can’t prove what it’s doing, but they can prove that there are absolutely no negative side effects, and there was a 65 per cent improvement with depression,” says Fitzgerald. Health Canada has certified the use of PEFT to treat severe depression. The Swiss-made iMRS device, which Fitzgerald uses and sells, was recently licensed as a Health Canada Medical Device. “I don’t want to ever say that it does something 100 per cent,” notes Fitzgerald. “It’s not a magic wand, but it is amazing when you try it.” 115 King Street E., Thornbury 519-599-9967 www.thornburylaserclinic.ca Hours: By appt.

Ski Train

rom 1940 to 1960, regular ‘ski trains’ ran from Toronto’s Union Station to the Craigleith Depot, where skiers – sometimes a rollicking bunch after partying on the train – were taken to Blue Mountain by horsedrawn sleighs. Each weekend, 200 to 300 revelers disembarked at The Depot – possibly explaining why the conductor in this photo appears to need some quiet time. The Craigleith Depot – indeed, Craigleith itself – have a direct connection to Sir Sandford Fleming, who engineered much of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1854, Fleming settled his parents, brothers and sister on a family farm originally owned by the area’s first resident, John Brazier. Naming the area Craigleith, meaning Rocky Harbour, the Flemings established a quarry and a furniture factory in the area. In 1872, Sandford’s father Andrew sold a parcel of land to the Northern Railway in order to construct a train station for the community. “By 1880 a handsome station with the very newest architectural design, a rounded turret, opened its doors to the

whistle of the locomotive and promise of prosperity for the community,” reads The Depot’s website. “In a direction quite unforeseen by the Flemings, the little station became the hub of ski trains from Toronto in the early 1940s, and planted the seeds for what was to become Ontario’s premier ski and fourseason recreational destination.” Regular passenger and mail service between Toronto and Craigleith ended on July 2, 1960, although freight service continued until 1984. In 1989 the tracks were lifted and the rail corridor became the Georgian Trail. The Depot was turned into a restaurant, then sat disused and derelict for many years before George Weider, son of Blue Mountain’s founder Jozo Weider (the very man responsible for bringing all those skiers to Craigleith years before) spearheaded a move to turn the former ‘ski train’ stop into a museum and “community interpretation centre.” Today, the fully refurbished Craigleith Heritage Depot is one of the last remaining wooden CNR stations. ❧
