OFFICIALLY, TC ENERGY’S ELECTRICITYSTORING MEGAPROJECT—proposed for the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre on Department of National Defence (DND) land in Meaford—is called the Ontario Pumped Storage Project. TC Energy (TCE) promises the facility will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs and make Ontario’s electricity grid more efficient. Community groups, however, call it Ontario’s View of shoreline at the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre, Meaford.

TCE is proposing the construction of a 152-hectare reservoir to hold millions of cubic metres of water. During periods of low energy demand, water would be pumped upslope to the reservoir and held before being released back into Georgian Bay to regenerate electricity at times of peak demand.

What attracted you to CARP? RB: We live in a very youth-oriented culture and we often forget that there is this huge group of people who have helped build the country. CARP creates a community that gives these people a voice – that’s what really attracted me. Why the emphasis on building community? n September 22 and 23, 2023, Collingwood played host to a truly remarkable event that blended art, environmental advocacy, and community engagement. Presented by the Escarpment Corridor Alliance, the Edward Burtynsky Event showcased the work of renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky, whose stunning images explore the intricate relationship between human activity and the natural world. This two-day event not only celebrated the beauty of our planet but also raised awareness about its fragility and the need for collective action to protect it, especially here in the SGB region.
The Edward Burtynsky Event was a resounding success, with three sold-out events at the Gayety Theatre, nearly 700 attendees, and a strong message of hope for the preservation of our natural heritage. Edward Burtynsky’s Personal Connection to South Georgian Bay Edward Burtynsky’s keynote address was a highlight of the event, customized for SGB with a heartfelt narrative about his deep connection to the area and his unwavering passion for its protection.
A Night of Celebration and Fundraising The event was not only a feast for the eyes but also a source of significant financial support for the work of the ECA. The generosity of the attendees, sponsors and donors was overwhelming. These funds will be channeled towards initiatives where science informs policy, ensuring a path to protecting the sensitive Escarpment. Panel Discussion: A Message of Hope The event concluded with a panel discussion that left attendees inspired and hopeful. The overarching message was clear: with the support of the people, meaningful change is possible. The success of the Greenbelt initiative, which protects vital natural areas in Ontario, served as a shining example of what can be achieved when communities unite in defense of their environment. The internationally recognized members of the panel included Edward Burtynsky, Jack Contin (former President of the Aboriginal Tourism Association for Southern Ontario), Jessica Kaknevicius, CEO of Forests Ontario, and Mike Robbins, a highly respected global tourism consultant.
ECA furthering collaboration among municipalities and environmental groups The ECA was formed in late 2021 with the vision of creating a network of eco-corridors and trails that unites over 500 square km of incredibly beautiful forest, wetlands, and five watersheds connecting the Blue Mountains and Beaver Valley, Castle Glen and Kolapore. Bruce Harbinson, President of the ECA, commented, “We are fully focused on three specific strategies: 1. Conserving strategic green spaces with strong biodiversity by stopping inappropriate mega developments on the Escarpment. 2. Creating a strategic ecological-corridor system and promoting a Conservation Economy. 3. Uniting like-minded local and regional groups with shared visions through strategic collaboration and partnerships”

Chamber of Commerce (the Jaycees). Frank Bryan, an entrepreneurial fundraiser for the Jaycees, was 24 that summer. He reached out to Armstrong’s management about a Collingwood show. Bryan knew Louis Armstrong was performing a fourconcert tour of Ontario with the closest booking at Dunn’s Pavilion (now The Key to Bala). A Friday night was blank on their itinerary. “I reached out to the tour manager. We agreed to the booking over the phone,” recalls Bryan, who now lives in Markham. Bryan also arranged for a
mopping handkerchief—defrosting, he called it.” Signature tunes such as “When the Saints Go Marching In”, “Mack the Knife” and “La Vie En Rose” kept the audience mesmerized. “Jaycee president Buddy Brown tried to convince people to dance but we just wanted to sit, afraid to miss a note,” recalls my mother, Helen Taylor, who was 24 at the time and attended the concert, and the party afterwards, with my father. The Collingwood firehall was on Ste. Marie Street behind the arena. Louis Armstrong’s tour
“and wasn’t too happy the next morning with the number of empty bottles all over our lawn.” Armstrong himself held court in the kitchen telling stories and trading jokes. “It was as if a movie star had stepped off the screen of the Gayety Theatre and come to life,” my mother recalls. Bryan remembers Armstrong as relaxed and convivial. “He told of making films with Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby (his favourite singer). About stopping a civil war on his tour of the Congo the previous year.” Armstrong

The Enterprise-Bulletin reported “spontaneous applause greeted the first notes as each selection was immediately recognized.” The silent, seated audience was in “rapt attention and ready appreciative response” as Armstrong and his band performed from a makeshift stage of the wrestling ring. Armstrong made “trademark use of his brow-

Bryan called friends (including my parents) who lit up the town’s party lines and descended on the house. “My mother claimed half the town showed up,” Bryan recalls,

Campbell has recently been able to move into better-quality hearing aids, which have allowed her to hear the little sounds she’d always missed, like the rain or the rustling of tree leaves in the wind.“I used to sit at the cottage and just watch them, but I didn’t realize that they made a sound.” Erica Campbell
Genetics, loud noise, infection, injury and certain medications can all contribute to hearing loss, but age-related hearing loss, known as “presbycusis,” is the most common cause. As we grow older, our auditory system experiences wear and tear. All those years of listening to music turned up in the car and going to concerts without earplugs eventually take their toll. As early as our late forties, high-frequency sounds, like children’s voices, alarms and even birdsong, can become hard to hear. Our hearing continues to decline gradually, with hearing loss becoming more pronounced in our sixties and seventies. For Jessie Strype, optician and owner of Blink Eyewear in Collingwood, hearing loss was always on her radar because she’d watched her father contend with age-related hearing loss for years. It

was during the pandemic, though, that she noticed something had changed. Once the masks went on and the Plexiglas barriers went up, Strype realized how much she’d been relying on seeing people’s mouths to understand what they were saying. Now, she was constantly asking people to repeat themselves. A new hearing test revealed she had a loss and could use a hearing aid. Though only 38 years old at the time, Strype didn’t hesitate. Beyond Judgment and Stigma
Eyeglasses were once considered nerdy until the fashion world deemed them chic. The same thing happened for orthotic shoes like Birkenstocks.
Unfortunately, hearing aids have not yet benefited from a similar image makeover. Wearing hearing aids still carries a social stigma, and their association with aging or disability deters many who could benefit from using them. “If you injure your knee and somebody says you need a brace, you just go get it,” says Dr. Alipasha Rassouli, ENT, based in Owen Sound. “But hearing loss is different. When you tell someone that they have a hearing loss, what they hear is ‘I am old.’” So, they fight it, they deny it, they live with it and make accommodations. But, “it’s no different than needing glasses,” says Rassouli. “You have a loss; you need an aid. It’s as simple as that.” Strype says most people are really shocked when they find out she wears an aid. “I get a lot of ‘But you’re so young!’” And when people tell her they

For nearly two decades, our organization has helped Foundation families build true partnerships with the charities they support. Many of our donor clients even opt to lend their time and considerable professional expertise— in areas such as operational management, marketing or finance—as they seek to take their charitable support to another level.
