PHARMACARE
Let’s Get it Right
The Canadian Association of Retired Persons is concerned that the proposed solution – a single public plan – will reduce the quality of prescription drug coverage and make it harder to access newer, more effective, and life-saving medications.
Canada's prescription drug insurance system is not working. High out-of-pocket costs, including co-pays and deductibles are a major financial burden for many, particularly older adults. Coverage across government administered plans in Canada is inconsistent, leading to provincial disparities.

Canada’s prescription drug insurance system needs an overhaul. Your health depends on it.
Here’s what CARP prescribes
The push for a single public plan would mean everyone in Canada with a health card is eligible for national pharmacare, even those already covered by plans. There would be no income cut-offs, eligibility rules, or exclusions. As a result of this breadth of coverage, many essential medications would not be covered - at great health and financial cost to average Canadians. Plus, wait times for new medicines would increase.

Here’s the truth. Years of the “just in case” pee can be just the cause. The connection between the brain, bladder and pelvic floor may not be a friendly one, and it can be the reason there’s dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles. Once these problems start, they tend to get worse and sadly, too many women simply suffer in silence.
Sarah was one of these women. She never felt comfortable carpooling because she knew she makes frequent stops. When
driving with her family, she felt like a burden, knowing she was the reason why the two-hour drive north to the cottage was always 30 minutes longer due to her need for the bathroom.
Sarah heard about UROSPOT, a private pelvic health and urology clinic disrupting this condition and six sessions later, Sarah’s no longer mapping out where to go when she’s on the go.
At UROSPOT, you sit fully-clothed on a Health Canada approved chair that uses high intensity electromagnetic energy to contract your pelvic floor muscles 11,000 times in 28 minutes. No one is touching you and nothing is going inside your body. You simply sit while the chair restores your pelvic floor. It’s pelvic health done differently. Treatment is eligible for partial benefit coverage.
Say goodbye to bladder leaks & urgency.

An exceptional European manor-inspired residence that is a landmark on Collingwood’s waterfront. With three separate wings offering 7 bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, 7 full & 3 halfbaths, 7 fireplaces, and inspired entertaining spaces, this unique dwelling balances tasteful splendor with function. French doors provide access to both the terrace and a private courtyard with gaslights and a heated, in-ground saltwater pool, perfect for exclusive outdoor entertaining and relaxation. The central Great Room dominates with a soaring 25-foot ceiling flooded with natural light from numerous dormer windows, with the focal point being an oversized, wood-burning Rumford fireplace. Much more than a home, this manor is a statement of discerning taste and global appeal, with luxury that transcends the ordinary.

ECOLOGICAL CORRIDORS CONNECTING THE WEB OF NATURE
What made you choose the Creemore/Collingwood/ Blue Mountains/Beaver Valley area? It likely has something to do with the outdoors, with Georgian Bay, with forests and the slopes of the Escarpment. People come here for four-season outdoor activities, the water, the hills, the trails, the forests—and the tranquility—that surrounds us.
Making room for wildlife
As more and more people flock to this area, it’s important to make room not just for newcomers but for nature, to accommodate the animals, birds, forests and the other elements of the natural world that make southern Georgian Bay what it is. That’s where ecological corridors come in.
As Parks Canada puts it, “ecological corridors are areas of land and water that aim to maintain or restore ecological connectivity. They do this by allowing species to move, and natural processes to flow freely across large landscapes.” These large swathes of wild land run between parks and other ‘natural’ areas. They improve climate resilience and sustain biodiversity by connecting wildlife habitat for migration, mates and food sources.
Recreation for generations
There are many planned ecological corridors around the world, including right here in Ontario, notably the Cootes-to-Escarpment EcoPark System and the Algonquin-to-Adirondacks (A2A) Corridor. These corridors benefit nature, but they also promote human-wildlife coexistence and ways for people to connect with the natural environment. Hiking, biking, skiing, birding, fishing and hunting are all activities that can occur in harmony with the nature-preservation and climate-mitigation role that ecological corridors play.
The spin-off benefits of corridors are enormous. They serve to anchor in perpetuity the nature-forward aspect of communities like ours—the very reason why people come here in the first place. This contributes to a healthy environment, abundant natural capital, and preserves recreational (and tourism) opportunities for generations.
Preserving our public common
It’s this kind of vital link that we need right now up on top of the Niagara Escarpment in the Collingwood/Blue Mountains
and Beaver Valley area. Despite its designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, as well as being part of the Greenbelt, the Escarpment is under unprecedented pressure. Massive developments threatens to chop up the area up above Collingwood, which includes some of the largest intact tracts of forest and wetlands along the Escarpment’s entire 725-kilometre
length. This natural capital, enshrined as it is under the Biosphere Reserve designation, is in essence a public common. Forests and wetlands may sit on private land, but they belong to us all.
The Escarpment Corridor Alliance (ECA) and a host of likeminded organizations and individuals are taking back our public common and preserving nature and recreation opportunities for generations to come. This network in the shape of a giant ‘H’ will unite over 500 square kilometers of incredibly beautiful forest, wetlands, and five watersheds connecting Creemore/Devil’s Glen, the Blue Mountains, Castle Glen (site of a proposed mega development) and Kolapore Uplands to the Beaver Valley (site of another proposed mega development).
We’re here to get the job done, but we need your help. Visit MyEscarpment.ca/Corridor/ to learn more or to make a contribution of time or money.
I’m always taking new education courses related to my business and recently completed two courses that I’m very passionate about that are becoming critical in the Real Estate Industry. 1) Aging In Place and 2) Adaptive Home Remodeling.
When asked, 98 out of 100 people over the age of 60 say they would like to stay in their current home as long as possible. The problem is the home no longer suits their evolving needs and abilities.
‘Aging In Place’ refers to the ability of individuals, particularly older adults, to live in their own homes and communities safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age or ability level. For Baby Boomers who are part of the demographic born between 1946 and 1964, aging in place has significant implications for the housing market.
Here are some considerations related to Aging in Place for Baby Boomers in the housing market: 1. Home Modifications
• 2. Single-Level Living
• 3. Proximity to Services
• 4. Community Features • 5. Technology Integration • 6. Financial Considerations
• 7. Estate Planning.
The housing market may respond to these preferences by seeing increased demand for homes that align with the principles of aging in place. Builders and developers should incorporate universal design principles into new construction and real estate professionals should emphasize the features that make a home suitable for aging in place when marketing to Baby Boomers.
Making renovations to age in place involves:
• Bathroom Modifications
• Kitchen Renovations
• Entrance and Doorway Modifications
• Flooring Considerations
• Lighting Improvements
• Bedroom Adjustments
• Smart Home Technology
• Staircase Modifications
• General Safety Considerations.
It is advisable to consult with a professional, such as an occupational therapist or a Certified Aging In Place Specialist to assess your specific needs and recommend tailored modifications for your home. Additionally, check local building codes and regulations to ensure that your renovations will comply with safety standards.

Outdoor Reflections is a Design Build company based out of Thornbury. With our awesome team, we keep clients informed with their project every step of the way. As a full service design build company, we can handle every aspect of the build, and coordinate with the right partners to make it happen if it is a piece of the project that requires specialized trades.
One trend that is taking off for the design side is 3d design – taking of the regular 2d design and making it come to life in a 3d design. It makes it look real for illustrating to people what their house can look like once a landscape is completed. Talk to us how this can be done for your property.
Regarding outdoor areas – three season rooms are becoming the norm, and not the exception. People want to be outside enjoying the seasons, and we can make that happen. Multiple entertainment areas are occurring with fireplace, outside tv areas, three season rooms and poolside. They are all coming together in the backyard to help you enjoy your property all the more. With our process, we sit down with people in the beginning and come up with a concept drawing for their vision. When we do the concept, it comes with a rough budget that fits your vision and goals for the areas.
After that, things become detailed with material selections and estimate. A lot of time will go into the material selections at this point in time, and estimate approvals.
This leads into walking into a project with the team. Meetings occur, and the Outdoor Reflections team steps on site. Daily communication for us is the norm, not the exception. A great experience for all involved.
Completion ends with a walk around and making sure customer satisfaction is paramount.
When you are thinking of a project – give us a call and we can show you what we can do.
The law of entropy applies especially to houses, but I’m comforted that at least one piece of mine may outlast me.

PROVIDING EXCEPTIONAL CARE AND SERVICE TO OUR CUSTOMERS
Originally established in 1878, Creemore Village Pharmacy is one of the longest running businesses in our region. With many long term owners over the years, it has been in the caring hands of Jennifer Yaeck for more than a decade now.
Jennifer lives in the village along with her husband, a Paramedic for the County of Dufferin, and two teenage sons. She is a well respected and active member of the community. With a background in Biochemistry and General Science, Jennifer achieved her undergraduate Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Toronto and has been a practicing pharmacist since 2003.
Pharmacy has endured many changes in the last few years. Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians have taken on a greater role with respect to administration of vaccinations and other medications by injection.
Pharmacists are adapting prescription dosages and dosage forms and are now prescribing for minor ailments. Jennifer and her team have adjusted by taking on these extra roles, all while maintaining a high level of patient care, integrity and customer service. Continually advancing for the growing needs of the surrounding community, the pharmacy also offers a large selection of over the counter necessities and home health care provisions, along with a rental program.
Still at the original corner location in the village of Creemore, the store has also expanded their scope of retail service over the years to include a unique array of gift, home decor, women’s clothing and accessories, children’s gifts and confection.
“We think of our customers as extended family. As a pharmacy, we try our very best to provide exceptional care and service to our customers. As a gift store, we try to ensure that our product selection is interesting, fresh and reasonably priced.”
Creemore Village Pharmacy has a warm and inviting atmosphere. It is always a hub of activity, a meeting place for friends, a safe haven for advice, and a treasure trove of exceptional goods for both residents and visitors, alike. It is a pillar in this small village and is sure to exist another hundred years.

Stretching the body and mind
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has an amazing track record with a lineage going back some 2,200 years. As such, it is one of the oldest medical systems in the world. TCM looks at the body holistically for signs of imbalance and provides prevention and maintenance treatments to facilitate, restore and sustain health equilibrium.
At TCM Healthcare we are proud to continue this time-honoured and proven tradition—with a modern medicine twist. While our practitioners, having graduated from the Traditional Chinese Medical University of China, are classically trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, they also completed further advanced training in Traditional Chinese and Western medicine practices at Humber College. Most of our practitioners have more than 20 years of medical practice experience and all our practitioners are licensed and permitted to provide TCM treatment in Canada.
TCM Healthcare offers a comprehensive array of treatments, including acupuncture, cupping, ear candling, moxibustion and Tui Na massage therapies, along with pain management, TCM herbal medicine, and much more. Each treatment plan is carefully designed to address your individual health concerns and conditions. Our integrative approach to natural holistic treatments helps to rebalance your body and allows it to return to a normal healthy state.
TCM Healthcare has provided services in this region for over 15 years, with clinics in Collingwood, Orangeville, Shelburne and Bolton. We have consistently earned top satisfaction marks on Google, ThreeBestRated and Yelp ratings. Over the past five years we have shown our appreciation for and gratitude to the community with our committed support of the Orangeville Lions Home and Garden Show.

ADVERTORIAL
RARE AND BEAUTIFUL INDIGENOUS PAINTINGS FROM THE GREAT LAKES REGION
Rare Indigenous paintings from around the Great Lakes can be yours at Shorelane Arts in Wasaga. Many of these magnificent works were influenced by the visionary style of the unique Woodland School of Art pioneered by the celebrated Anishinaabe artist, Norval Morrisseau (19322007).
Woodland paintings depict Indigenous legends, mythical symbolism, spiritual concepts, cultural traditions and human, animal and nature interactions using contemporary art mediums of acrylic, gouache or watercolour paint on canvas, paper or wood panels. The works are both bold in colour and striking in their two-dimensional graphical style. With their dramatic visual impact, they tell a powerful story.
The one-of-a-kind collection at Shorelane Arts features paintings by highly regarded Indigenous artists, such as Christian Morrisseau, Roy Thomas, Jay Bell Redbird, Stephen Snake, Brian Marion, Ivan Shawana, Frank Polson, Roger Kakepetum, Paul Kohoko and Richard Bedwash.
Some of these prolific artists had the good fortunate to have worked under the great Norval Morrisseau himself. Tragically, a number of them are no longer with us. This is what makes the Shorelane Arts collection so rare.
Shorelane Arts’s curator, David Spector, aims to heighten awareness, understanding and appreciation for the beauty and meaning of Indigenous art, not to mention its significant value as an investment. With great respect and support for the culture and its departed artists, the gallery invites Indigenous Elders to participate in the openings and closings of Shorelane’s shows, both in Wasaga and other venues around Southern Georgian Bay and in Toronto. Shorelane Arts is also the title sponsor of the Indigenous Arts Series, Yonnhe’ón:we, delivered in partnership with the Town of Collingwood.
Shorelane Arts officially opened for business in the summer of 2023. Spector, a collector of Indigenous art for 30 years, has visited many reserves to deepen his knowledge of the art, the culture and the artists’ past and present work. Some of the artists have even lived in his home while painting, developing close ties. His expertise equips him to provide expert valuation of private Indigenous art collections.
Come and browse the unique collection of spectacular Indigenous Woodland art at Shorelane Arts in Wasaga. Read about the artists’ fascinating, sometimes difficult creative paths and influences at shorelanearts.com. Subscribe to the gallery newsletter for notices about new artists, special events and showings.

The story behind The June Motel, as the closely watched boutique brand opens its third Ontario location—in Beaver Valley.
The June: Beaver Valley will soon be a balm for those seeking a mini escape from fast-paced city life. It’s well-situated to explore the region.
BEFORE THE JUNE, a “boutique motel” was something you could find in Miami or Palm Springs, but Brown and Sklash brought the concept to Canada when they purchased The Sportsman in Prince Edward County in 2016, and turned it into something voguish, feminine and hip.
They ripped out the carpeting, brightened the rooms, erected a wine bar in the lobby, and painted every door pink. The June became an instant hit, especially amongst millennial women, who appreciated the design and loved the story: best friends ditch their nine-to-five, risk their savings, disrupt an industry, and do it their own way.
Like when the first cherry blossoms bloom in spring; everyone wanted a photo of The June. Influencers flocked to the transformed motel, inspiring a sea of selfies.
Quite suddenly, Prince Edward County became a hotspot for bachelorette parties and weekend wine romps. The region has seen a surge in both tourism and real estate prices. In the past five years, there’s been a 63 percent growth in property value. It’s indisputable that The June has played a role in that growth.
Funnily enough, neither Brown or Sklash had a background in real estate or tourism. Brown worked in public relations and Sklash had a cushy government job in the births and deaths office. The learning curve was steep.
To better understand the business, they spent that first year operating The Sportsman as they found it: ugly and falling apart. They wore multiple hats, from greeting guests at reception to pouring wine and cleaning the rooms. “We
jumped right in,” Sklash chuckles. It was a crash course in hospitality. Now, eight years later, The June employs approximately 50 staff members during peak season.
While Brown and Sklash’s motel ventures have always attracted media attention, it was partnering with Netflix in 2020 for the series Motel Makeover, a reality show that documented the renovation of Sauble Beach, that brought them fame.
The Sauble Beach purchase was twice the size of their first location, and included a full-service restaurant and pool. The project was ambitious, and things got exponentially more complicated when COVID brought the world to a sudden halt.
“When COVID hit, our rooms were already completely gutted, there was no going back,” says Brown, who can smile about it now. “There were
lumber shortages. We were faced with really tight deadlines and no access to the materials we needed to get the job done.”
There was no shortage of drama, and Motel Makeover made sure to capture all of it: the stress, the panic, the big emotions. The show garnered a major viewership, and The June’s social media blew up (their Instagram is hovering at 300,000 followers).
When asked about the Netflix experience, Brown and Sklash have mixed feelings. “It would have done more for us if we had wanted to become design influencers, or get into e-commerce... but what we’re really passionate about is finding these motels and building more places to stay,” says Brown, explaining that while the massive following on Instagram has helped with bookings, there are tens of thousands—from all over the world—who are simply there for the pretty pictures.
The parlour, the shared space where guests can relax and enjoy a refreshment and sweeping views of the Escarpment.
What Motel Makeover did teach them, however, was that people love seeing the June story unfold. For Beaver Valley, they swapped a major streaming network for their own small production crew. The decision allowed them to have full creative control.
“It’s
different. It’s more quaint. It’s more country...more mature and more refined.”

The alcohol-free first two hours is one sign that the Everlove Men’s Quarterly Growth Social is not your standard pub night.
YET BENEATH
THE EASYGOING ATMOSPHERE, A DEEPER RESONANCE SIMMERS. EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM HAS COME WITH PURPOSE, DETERMINATION AND A WILLINGNESS TO STEP OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE.
FOTOPOULOS’ EXPLORATION INTO “MEN’S WORK” BEGAN IN 2021. Craving connection, and battling isolation and depression, he began a weekly men’s “growth collective” at his then home in Kitchener. After a COVID-induced pause and a move to Collingwood, what began as an informal Saturday afternoon meet-up has since evolved into a structured weekly gathering of four separate groups of 10 men at Everlove Healing + Yoga’s studio on St. Paul Street. The Quarterly Growth Social is the next evolution of these men’s circles, a larger gathering at a public venue where many men feel more comfortable trying out men’s work for the first time.
Though not my deepest fear, walking into a room full of men I have never met before is admittedly intimidating, especially without beer. (The event is alcohol-free for the first two hours to promote authentic conversation.) But the mood when I arrive is warm, excited, and welcoming. I immediately feel the tension in my chest begin to ease. Yet beneath the easygoing atmosphere, a deeper resonance simmers. Everyone in this room has come with purpose, determination and a willingness to step out of their comfort zone. For many, it is to combat literal isolation and loneliness, a symptom of the rise in post-pandemic remote work. For others,
the isolation is not physical but emotional. “We [men] try to figure out everything ourselves,” says Fotopoulos. “We try to support everyone around us and we never ask for help. But one day it just hits us. Getting men more used to sharing is a pressure release valve. And it can be enough pressure release to avoid becoming a statistic.”
The statistics Fotopoulos refers to speak for themselves. Approximately one million Canadian men suffer from depression each year, according to the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation. Of the approximately 4,000 suicide deaths in Canada each year, almost 75 percent are men, a startling average of 50 per week. Yet men are far less likely than other genders to utilize mental health services, often due to a stigma that views asking for help as weakness. It’s a stigma that for some will turn deadly. The 2022 Mental Health Commission of Canada highlighted an increased risk of suicide among men who feel expectation or pressure to “uphold masculine norms (like strength, toughness, self-reliance, stoicism).”
This is how Fotopoulos welcomes us this evening, by listing these statistics. It’s a stark and poignant reminder to the men in the room (myself included) that this is far more important than just a simple meet-and-greet. It is a chance
to do what many men feel is impossible—to speak truth and be vulnerable. And it’s an opportunity that will arguably save lives. To combat male suicide deaths, the Mental Health Commission of Canada suggests reframing masculinity “to allow for greater expression and recognition of emotion and help-seeking among men.”
Attending an event like the Quarterly Growth Social is one way to make this first step, and it is not as painful as one might assume. Collingwood local Joey Peragine admits he was nervous to sit down in a men’s group. But when he eventually attended his first Quarterly Growth Social, the experience defied his expectations.
“It was really great to see men in the community coming together,” Peragine says. “It was a lot more fun than I imagined it was going to be.”
I can empathise with Peragine’s hesitation. As a millennial male, I too have been trained by society, media, and my colonial heritage to internalize my feelings. By the time I hit my early twenties, my idea of masculinity centred around strength, capability, self-dependency and toughness. The men attending the Quarterly Growth Social are working to change these stereotypes by redefining masculinity to champion emotional awareness, connection, vulnerability and community.
“There is a stigma that the feminine energy of nurturing has to be from women, and that’s completely false,” says local businessowner Daniel James, who has attended four quarterly socials. “There is a new wave of deeply compassionate and connected men, who I believe are the future of masculinity.”
James says discovering men’s work is something he is extremely grateful for.
“I feel like I am at a new level in my life because of this,” he says. “There has been so much healing as a result of being honest with myself in front of other men that it really does completely change who you are.”
James is not the only man whose life has improved by simply sitting down with other men and talking. Fotopoulos says he receives consistent, positive feedback, and that many men have told him doing men’s work has changed their life.
“A lot of men have quit their vices, marijuana, alcohol, pornography, as a result,” Fotopoulos says. “A lot of them have found connection and feel less lonely. The Men’s Growth Social has helped to shift from labelling vulnerability as weakness to seeing vulnerability as strength.”
Nor do the positive effects have to stop at the individual. Fotopoulos believes helping men learn to express and understand feelings will allow them to be more emotionally supportive for their loved ones.
“It’s going to make a better marriage. It’s going to lead to more compassion, more understanding and more love. And then the kids are going
to difficult questions about sexual abuse.

Mathew Channer is a freelance writer and editor newly arrived to the Georgian Bay area. His work has appeared in Climbing Magazine, Latitudes & Attitudes, DeepWild and other international publications. When he is not writing, he can usually be found up the nearest mountain, looking for rocks to climb.
Ted Yoannou is a criminal lawyer based in Collingwood and Toronto, representing clients across southern Ontario.
He and his family have roots in Simcoe County dating back to the 1960’s, spending every summer on the beach, He was a co-owner of the Wasaga Waterworld waterparks in the late 1990’s / early 2000’s, and you may recall his famous waterslide race against Mayor Walter Borthwick in 1997. Or maybe not.
More recently, he’s become notorious for embarrassingly high scores at our local golf courses and singing along very poorly with the tribute bands at the Gayety Theatre. He recently participated in this Q & A session.
Q. What made you become a criminal lawyer?
A. I really enjoy the variety, strategy, and negotiations involved. Helping clients who come from a multitude of different backgrounds and experiences and who find themselves in all sorts of difficult situations. Working with Judges, Crown Attorneys, the police, social workers, court staff, counsellors, law students, etc. They are all unique and interesting. It’s challenging, and there’s never a dull day.
Q. What kinds of cases does your office handle?
A. Literally everything from the most serious criminal behaviour to relatively minor transgressions. Our most common cases involve various assault related allegations, as well as all driving related offences, both criminal and traffic. We also help clients clear their past records, which could be hindering their employment and travel aspirations.
Q. What is your worst quality?
A. My short attention span. Sorry, what was the question again?
Q. What is your best quality?
A. Not my golf swing. In all seriousness, I think it’s the focus we have in our office on client service. In addition to protecting our clients’ legal interests effectively, we strive to communicate in simple language, not “legalese”. The criminal court process is complicated, and we try to simplify it for our clients as much as possible. We treat our clients the way we would treat our family and friends, and the way we ourselves want to be treated. The number one complaint I most often hear about other lawyers is, “I don’t know what’s going on with my case and my lawyer never gets back to me.” That doesn’t happen in our office.
Q. How do you deal with clients that you know are guilty?
A. I’d like to consult with my lawyer before I answer that!

Art Is for Everyone, Right?
Groove to the art and music in the Matilda Swanson Art Gallery, the welcoming new Collingwood exhibition space that aims to make art accessible.
BY DIANNE RINEHART // PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANYA SHORTHE FIRST THING you should know about the Matilda Swanson Art Gallery is that there is no Matilda Swanson. The gallery’s laid-back owner, Sarah Filion, laughs when she explains that the name behind the two galleries she owns—one on Hurontario Street in Collingwood and other in Stratford—is completely made up.
What isn’t made up is the care she puts into taking the mickey out of the intimidation factor in the art world. “I want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy the art, which is why it was created to begin with. Art should not make anyone feel less than,” says Filion.
Filion’s message that art is for everyone comes across the moment you walk into her Collingwood
gallery. It isn’t a cold, concrete box with stark white walls and intimidating staff looking you up and down. Instead, it is a rambling, huge home with a cottagey feel, filled with an unbelievably diverse collection of paintings from landscapes to portraits to a giant monkey wearing headphones on a backdrop of brightly coloured polka dots created with glitter paint.
Tucked into a corner almost hidden by paintings stacked along the floor is a table with a young woman manning the cash. Can this be the owner? Indeed! She gives out a welcoming smile that lets you know you aren’t expected to know anything about art, never mind prove your knowledge. You are invited instead, as Filiion describes, to “groove to the music, enjoy the art, and look at things you would not normally think of.”
Filion is firm that art shouldn’t be intimidating. “We all like different kinds of food and fashion and movies,” she says. “So Mexican food or Chinese food? Glitter monkeys or landscapes?” She compares buying art to the shopping experience women have when they are out with friends. “It’s like ‘Buy the leather pants!’ If it makes you happy, go for it!”
Meanwhile, the Matilda Gallery & Art Bar in Stratford is a cozy bar/restaurant with massive paintings adorning its wooden-planked walls. “You can eat, drink and enjoy art,” she says. “There may even be an impromptu dance party.”
She describes the two galleries as drastically different, but complementary. “My galleries are best friends,” she jokes.
And if you think Sarah Filion is too young to
possibly own and operate two galleries filled to the brim with works from the 60 artists she represents, you should think about the fact that she opened her first gallery in Clarksburg 14 years ago, when she was about 20 years old.
Not that she’s had time to rest on her laurels. Last August she unexpectedly had to move out of her Clarksburg location, only months after she had opened Stratford.
But by September, she had found her new Hurontario Street location in Collingwood.
“Last year feels like four years for the amount we accomplished and went through,” she says of her gallery team. “Some colourful craziness,” she sums up.
So how did Sarah Filion end up owning two galleries, one including a bar/restaurant? Does she have a background in the restaurant business? No, she acknowledges. But then again, she didn’t have one in art either.
Instead, she grew up in the bush in northern Ontario where there were no galleries, and being a gallery owner certainly wasn’t something one aspired to. “It’s not something you did. You became a nurse, a teacher or a hairdresser.”
“Art is its own language,” Filion explains. “It’s like mathematics. It can speak to anyone.”
Nonetheless, she says she was always creative as a kid and was an A student.
When she came down to Clarksburg to visit family, she loved it and never left. For two years, she worked in an art supply store, and when that closed, she opened her gallery in December 2009.
“I was just a baby when I opened Clarksburg,” she says. “It’s just how I make my life. Consequences are what commitment means. I just jump in and do my best to make it work.”
Filion aims to create community through her galleries. In Clarksburg she started a not-forprofit organization called the Clarksburg Village Association to draw attention to the town. Now she is promoting economic development in Collingwood and Stratford through the synergy of her two locations, which are only two hours apart. Because they offer totally different experiences, she finds people from Stratford driving to Collingwood to see her gallery here and vice versa. Many of the artists she represents are local to Stratford and Collingwood such as Jon Houghton and Andrew Peycha. Others are from across the country, including Dominique Desmeules from
“Art should not make anyone feel less than.”
Quebec, Erika Beyea from New Brunswick, Dakota Ray Hebert, an indigenous artist from Saskatoon who is also becoming a well-known comedian and actress (“If you’re creative you are creative,” Filion laughs), and Randy Hayashi from Alberta. And there is also still Diane Lingenfelter, the first artist Filion ever represented.
The variety and diversity of artists means that there is a “little bit of something for everyone—or a lot!” Indeed, some clients who build new homes and are faced with blank walls can go home with paintings by 12 different artists at a time.
And her gallery attracts multiple generations. She loves it when students come in and look at the art and ask questions, or when an 85- or 90-yearold comes in “and buys the craziest art that the 15-year-olds like.”
“Art is its own language,” Filion explains. “It’s like mathematics. It can speak to anyone. Just
because you are middle class does not mean you shouldn’t have art in your life. You should be able to walk in, even if you can’t afford it.”
Life for Filion is now a far cry from the life in the bush where she grew up hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Oh, and playing hockey as the only girl in the boys’ league. But maybe that is where she got the determination to jump into the cutthroat art world. Afterall, her nickname on the team was “goon.”
“I was always in the penalty box, always picking fights [on the ice] with the boys. I grew up as a creative tomboy, I would say.”
She gets, probably more than anyone else, that you don’t have to have an art background to appreciate it. And so, she has created “a place where you can let your imagination roll, and if you don’t have a strong sense of imagination, you can look at other peoples’.”
Creating these galleries, one could say, is an art in itself. “All of life is an artistic journey, “says Filion. “Just dip your paint brush in and see what you create.”

FRAM + Slokker’s thoughtfully designed custom, single and multi-family homes, condominium and rental apartments, large mixed-used developments, affordable housing and student housing have been built in the Greater Toronto Area, Alberta, select markets in the United States—and in Southern Ontario, including Collingwood with its groundbreaking Shipyards and Collingwood Quay redevelopment.
FRAM + Slokker is known for its stunning architecture and design, uncompromising quality, old-world craftsmanship, respect for community sensitivity and integration, as well as first-class customer service. In fact, its dedicated after-sales customer service program is second to none, and is one significant reason for 40% of FRAM + Slokker’s new homes sales coming from repeat buyers or referrals. The firm is also a proven leader in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. FRAM + Slokker is a member of the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC), and has completed a number of buildings to LEED requirements as well as numerous homes to the Energy Star program standards.
