BETSEY BROCK

“This is it. This is where my people are.”

Dear friends, supporters, fans, and artists— The beginning of this 2017-2018 season feels especially significant. Last season was marked by great artistic successes and organizational transitions, and as board and staff look forward to the new season and new leadership, we also find ourselves looking back at the history of the organization and our connections with it. I was honored this June to accept the title of Executive Director of On the Boards (OtB). I came to work at OtB three years ago, but I’ve sat in its audience since 1996. It’s shocking to me that On the Boards will turn 40 this February, and that I’ve been seeing shows here for half its life. Here’s my On the Boards story: I moved to Seattle in the fall of 1996 after a post-college stint in New York, where I joined the cast of Penny Arcade’s Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore!, volunteered at PS122, La Mama, and the Performing Garage, and spent a year and a half performing and touring with the Bread and Puppet Theater. I thought by leaving New York I was giving up a world where performance art, activism, dance, music, and theater all joined up in a raucous party. I spoke to downtown theater

folks, my fellow puppeteers, drag queens, and weirdos and asked, “I’m moving to Seattle, what do I do there?” The answer was always “On the Boards.” As a new Seattleite, I saw a lot of fringe theater, set after set by bands in smoky bars, went dancing at Re-bar, and then finally found myself climbing the stairs at Washington Hall, On the Boards’ original Central District home, on my way to pick up tickets for 33 Fainting Spells’ The Uninvited. That night I heaved a full-body sigh of relief: “This is it. This is where my people are.” I kept going. I saw things I loved. I saw things I hated. I saw things I couldn't believe I'd seen. I knew On the Boards was there for me, to expand my brain, confound my expectations, and show me things I couldn’t see anywhere else. But I wasn’t really at OtB all the time until my family moved back to Seattle in 2002, after another stint in NYC. I think I’ve seen almost everything since then. In addition to being a rapt audience member, I rode waves of leadership change. I remember welcoming Lane to the community right after we arrived back in town, saying farewell to Diane Ragsdale when she joined the Mellon Foundation, and being thrilled in 2004 when former Consolidated Works Managing Director Sarah Wilke came to OtB. This past season has seen another series of significant transitions. In October, Sarah became SIFF’s Executive Director after 12 years at On the Boards. Monique Courcy was named Executive Director at TeenTix, and former Communications Director Erin Jorgensen now leads communications for Shout Your Abortion. We’ve added new staff and promoted internally: Jessica Schroeder joined the OtB team as Director of Finance & Operations. Clare Hatlo is now Associate Producer at OtB. Cierra Jones and Erica Reich gallantly led OntheBoards.tv this winter and spring. Cierra was promoted to Audience Services Manager and Erica to Patron Relations Specialist. Jayme Yen came to us in March as Director of Design & Communications, and Beth Raas-Bergquist assumed the role of Director of Development. Kim Lusk joined us as Bookkeeper in June.

especially timely—like Belarus Free Theatre, making art that shows the creative community is stronger than any dictatorial regime, and Kaneza Schaal and Cornell Alston, examining the damage of being in prison: not the time served but the dreams lost during that time. I like to think that Lane will raise a glass to us from Columbus with each opening night Studio Supper. This summer our office has been filled with meetings with local artists on their upcoming projects. Seeing the faces of Dani Tirrell, Jody Kuehner, Frank Boyd, Evan Flory-Barnes, Kate Wallich, and Alice Gosti scheming and planning with our staff energizes me and makes the past months of transition, sleepless nights, and hard work so very worth it. So here’s to our 17/18 season! We kick off the season with Seattle Dance City, a blowout we're hosting with Velocity Dance Center and Century Ballroom to celebrate a new season of dance and performance all over town. Meet you on the dance floor September 15. I can’t wait to see you shake a tail feather.

Last but not least, in March, Lane Czaplinski, our Artistic Director of 15 years, became the Director of Performing Arts at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. I’m proud to lead On the Boards into its 40th Season. We’re well into our search for a new Artistic Director. The conversations we’ve had about how we should move forward have supplied inspiring feedback from our stakeholders: artists, board members, donors, foundations, artists, colleagues, sponsors—did I mention artists? We’ve heard stories about On the Boards changing lives and opening eyes. We’ve also heard ways we can do better in building an inclusive organization, broadening our stakeholder base and supporting staff and artist growth. Our 17/18 Season is a final dispatch from Lane Czaplinski to the community. I’m so grateful for his curatorial work on this season, which includes internationally renowned favorites like Forced Entertainment and Bebe Miller. The season also offers performances that feel

6. Creating new art is always good but new art is seldom great. These are the stakes and they are totally fair.

LANE CZAPLINSKI

7. There is such a thing as too much curation. It’s like too much juicing — you don’t get the benefit of the fiber!

When Things Suck: Streamline, Then Mecca

8. Contemporary performance practice and shenanigans are not only for audiences who regularly go to contemporary performances.

Following are a few thoughts in consideration of the season of live art contained in this brochure. This is not intended to be a manifesto and only is offered in the spirit of sharing lessons learned while employed at On the Boards over the past fifteen years.

9. Peanuts are free at the Streamline Tavern and the drinks are cheap. Just don’t be an ass. Afterward, you will most likely end up at The Mecca Cafe & Bar where they do not have raspberry vinaigrette nor do they make manhattans. Do not order such things there.

1. Performances are controlled environments, like sports, that serve as vehicles for reflection and exchange. Rarely does anyone get hurt or at least hurt badly.

10. On the Boards is a national treasure and if you’re reading this in Seattle, it means you’re one of the lucky ones who get to roll up and enjoy challenging new performances in a decidedly unchallenging environment. People are nice there and if you’re an artist they’ll be especially nice to you. OtB is unique because a lot of special people have been building it since 1978 and a lot of special people are there now helping it sustain itself and grow towards the future. Really, OtB is like that one-of-a-kind hike / bar/ beach / gelateria / gymnasium/ cliff / lighthouse.

2. It is hard to be an artist and even harder to be an artist who is from Belarus or is a black or indigenous person in this country. The former suffers bouts of loneliness and impoverishment while the latter parties suffer these maladies while being the frequent targets of systemic violence and exclusion. 3. If the National Endowment for the Arts were to be abolished it would be like losing an arm or a leg. It wouldn’t necessarily cause death but make no mistake: it would suck.

It’s one of THOSE places. It’s where with some frequency you’ll be provoked. And occasionally moved or inspired. It celebrates both local and global with heavy pours. While deftly trading in the ineffable without taking itself too seriously. Please go there. And take care of it.

4. Generally speaking, examining other cultures by making art inspired by them is a flawed proposition. This is because, oftentimes, the culture that is doing the examining has been downright shitty towards the culture being examined. That said, any cross-cultural exchange has its ramifications and it’s up to the participants to determine how things go down. 5. Be wary of thinking that all art has to be about something or make the world a better place. The natural tendency when things suck is to want to do something but this doesn’t have to include making art. If help is required then help. But it isn’t necessary to make a play or dance about helping. I mean, you can. You just don’t have to.

Where do you belong when your government suppresses your basic right to expression? What do you do when the state imprisons you for making art? How would you survive one of the most brutal prison systems in the world?

Belarus Free Theatre combines forces with Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina in her stage debut to tell the stories of three dissident artists and to examine how art persists under oppression. As governments clamp down and walls go up, this blazing production confronts today’s most urgent issues in a searing performance that blends sensuous theatricality and vigorous physicality. We see how artists living under dictatorship illuminate the knife-edge of complacency in democratic societies, reminding us of the true cost of freedom and the dangers of inertia. Burning Doors is created in partnership with ArtReach as part of Journey Festival International 2016; Co-commissioned by Arts Centre Melbourne. Developed at Falmouth University’s Academy of Music and Theatre Arts (AMATA). Burning Doors is generously supported by Arts Council England. Burning Doors is presented with funding from WESTAF’s TourWest program, which is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

BELARUS FREE THEATRE is an award-winning refugee-led theatre company in the U.K. and the only theatre in Europe banned by its own government on political grounds. Founded on principles of freedom of speech and artistic expression. Its focus is on social justice, taboo zones and violation of human rights across the globe, with an approach akin to investigative journalism. Their transnational campaigns and theatre educational programs encourage people to find their own voice within society and to develop a deeper engagement with social and political issues. belarusfreetheatre.com

A conversation about borders and the limitations of delineated states grows from the fuzzy line between the Pancho Villa legend and his actual biography. This opera asks what Pancho Villa means to Mexican and American culture and where these meanings intersect and conflict. It brings together artistic collaborators from both sides of the river to engage in a borderless investigation about the Mexican and Mexican-American impact on the culture and politics of West Texas.

“An elegant, economic production that delivers on its promise to stay with you long after you leave.” — The Guardian

Poised in the delicate space between concert and theatre, Endings is a meditation on cycles and the ending of things. The ordinary and the extraordinary cluster around death, dying, and the afterlife. The manifestation of these moments take form through the use of portable turntables, reel-to-reel tape players and live performance. This hybrid work is built in part from one-on-one interviews; these stories, reflections, and voices are cut onto vinyl records and embedded within a richly textured electro-acoustic sound design that is extended through live singing. This performance features the songs and vocals of acclaimed singer/ songwriter Paddy Mann (Grand Salvo). Endings has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, and the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria. Commissioned by Performance Space and the City of Melbourne’s Arts House.

Building on over twenty years experience, TAMARA SAULWICK’s individual practice has coalesced in recent years into a singular and compelling voice. Utilising digital, mobile, and analogue technologies, with a particular emphasis placed on the role of sound in live performance, her works reflect on how we as individuals connect, confront, and interact with one another. Her major works include Alter (2016), Endings (2015), PUBLIC (2013), and Pin Drop (2010). Tamara is an Australia Council for the Arts Fellow and the Artistic Director of Chamber Made Opera. Her first work for the company, Permission To Speak premiered in late 2016. tamarasaulwick.com

Material Deviance in Contemporary American Culture takes a sideways look at our object-based reality. Reflecting stuff-centered culture back to ourselves, this dream state passes through shame, nostalgia, patriotism, and the weight of inheritance. Choreographer and hybrid performance artist Alice Gosti asks, Do objects imbued with so much of our worth start to take over and take on a life of their own? This cluttered landscape expands like a hoarder’s collection and contracts like an immigrant’s suitcase. It breathes like capitalism, filling an existential void whose appetite is endless. Material Deviance helps us uncover what is buried under the steep piles along the path from our bed to the bedroom door. We hold it in our hands. Material Deviance in Contemporary American Culture is funded by NEFA’s National Dance Project, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture. It also has support from the Vermont Performance Lab (VT), which is funded by the NEA. Developmental residencies included Linda Austin’s Performance Works Northwest, Slate Theatre, BASE: Experimental Arts + Space. Material Deviance is partially funded by the New England Foundation for the Arts National Dance Project Presentation Grant and the National Endowment for the Arts. It was developed at On the Boards through the Performance Production Program, made possible by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

ALICE GOSTI is an Italian-American choreographer, hybrid performance artist, curator, DJ, and architect of experiences, working between Seattle and Europe since 2008. Gosti’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, commissions, and residencies including the 2012 Vilcek Creative Promise in Dance Award, the 2012 danceWEB scholarship, Velocity’s 2015 Made in Seattle Program, and 2017 Artist Trust Fellowship. Gosti’s work has been commissioned and presented nationally and internationally in universities, theaters, museums, and galleries. Dance Magazine has described Gosti’s work as “unruly yet rigorous, feminine yet rebellious, task-like yet mischievous.” gostia.com

FRANK BOYD & LIBBY KING PATTI & THE KID THEATER

SUN, APR 15 5 PM

Straight from the 22nd century, artists and performers Frank Boyd and Libby King present a deeply American riff on Waiting for Godot. In Patti & The Kid, two eccentric and heavily armed outlaws hide in a vast dystopian desert, desperately trying to pass the time. They’ll do anything to stave off their personal demons and the haunted mythology of a country steadily closing in around them. A contemporary Western with Nerf guns, Patti & The Kid examines the American Dream in a post-digital world and explores the human experience of being left behind by technology.

Black Bois is a movement and theater piece that explores how black men/bois grieve, show rage, express joy, and cry. Dancer and choreographer Dani Tirrell looks into the depths of these emotional states and asks, How do we live with our pain? Who are we really in our pain? And how do we show love towards each other? Inspired by the lives of Kalief Browder and Tamir Rice, Black Bois is a meditation on being a black boi/male in the United States. Featuring live music, collaboration with a large cast of local artists/performers, community classes, and installations, this performance project celebrates black bodies in space and provokes an emotional engagement with movement.

JACK&JILL is a comedy of errors structured on social codes and the training within prison reentry programs to debutante balls. The performance considers the metric-less damages of being in prison; not the time one has served but the measure of one’s dreaming that is given to the state. Aspirational class stories like those of the 1950’s sitcoms The Honeymooners and Amos and Andy, intersect with real and imagined ceremonies for entering society. Directed by Kaneza Schaal and starring Cornell Alston, the performance explores markers of transition and transformation, and the liminal ritual spaces that bridge worlds. JACK&JILL is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by On the Boards in partnership with the Contemporary Arts Center, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), REDCAT (Los Angeles), and NPN. The Creation Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). JACK&JILL is presented with funding from WESTAF’s TourWest program, which is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

DREAMING LABS

During the run of JACK&JILL the artists will offer Dreaming Labs, workshops that facilitate creative exchange. The Labs are open to people of all ages, with a focus towards those navigating transitions out of prison and their families, and youth involved in the juvenile detention system. The work aims to galvanize, share, and tend to internal life and resources. (Visit ontheboards.org for schedule and further information.) CONT’D >>

Forced Entertainment present a special, onenight only event: Tomorrow’s Parties is a playful, poignant, and at times delirious look forwards to a multitude of hypothetical futures both possible and impossible. On a stage framed by colored fairground lights, a minimal set hosts a low-fi theatrical explosion. The pleasure of invention takes two protagonists in different directions. Ranging across utopian and dystopian visions, science fiction scenarios, political nightmares, and absurd fantasies, Forced Entertainment delivers a thought-provoking survey of hopes and fears as they speculate about what the future will bring.

HOW IT WORKS

Two years ago we started the Ticket Bank in an effort to make our art experiences more inclusive. We know that ticket prices can be a barrier to attending OtB, and we’re working on breaking down those obstacles and broadening the conversation. The Ticket Bank gives people the opportunity to buy extra tickets for other audience members and allows potential audience members to claim tickets for free. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Last year was a big success and we’re excited to continue the program. This year we want to grow the Ticket Bank and increase the number of people who contribute tickets and sign up to receive tickets. Help us spread the word!

This season, OtB Ambassador and 17/18 Season artist Dani Tirrell will be curating one Open Studio with artists whose projects will be developed over the year and will culminate in a showing in spring 2018. Project proposals are considered three times over the season (see application deadlines below); performance dates and lineups will be posted online throughout the year. Join us in supporting local artists and new work in its earliest stages!

MOTHER TONGUE, PART OF 2017 NW NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

Open Studio offers artists a regular platform to present a range of works-in-progress: from a few minutes of new material to a performance installation to an excerpt of a durational performance. All projects are self-contained and technically constrained, providing a low-pressure showcase that encourages experimentation. Audiences have the opportunity to engage informally with artists and give feedback after each showcase.

Now in its 35th year, the NW New Works Festival showcases new and experimental works from a variety of performance disciplines, upholding its mission to showcase tomorrow’s artists today within the Northwest’s creative community. Curated by a panel of peer artists and arts administrators from across the region, the Festival provides rehearsal time, an honorarium, documentation, and the opportunity to present work at OtB. In the past few years audiences have witnessed new pieces from artists including Tim Smith-Stewart/Jeffrey Azevedo, Jessica Jobaris & General Magic, and Markeith Wiley — all of whose work has become part of regular seasons at On the Boards.

SUPPORT

We can’t do it without you Donor support is what allows OtB to program based on artistic risk—not box office receipts—and to keep ticket prices low. With about a third of each season’s costs donated by generous audience members just like you, donors are an incredibly important part of what powers OtB. We’ll make it as easy as possible, whether you’d like to give in a lump sum, in monthly installments, as a 3 Year Club donor, or as an A-List or OtBFF Subscriber (see pages 92–93 for details). Just give. You’ll be glad you did. You help us keep the art happening.

LORDY, LORDY, LOOK WHO'S (ALMOST) FORTY (not quite)

GET A GLASS BEHIND THE BAR JOIN THE 3 YEAR CLUB: OtB'S SUPER SUPPORTERS Passionate about new art? Dedicated to supporting artists? Put your money where your mouth is. OtB’s 3 Year Club is made up of our most steadfast supporters, who each commit to supporting OtB with an annual donation of at least $500 a year for three years. 3 Year Club members are an inner circle of progressive art enthusiasts who help give us the sustainability to support our programs for multiple years. 3 Year Club benefits include invitations to exclusive events, special access to tech rehearsals, sneak peeks of works-in-progress and discussions with artists, our undying gratitude, and a personalized drinking glass behind the FUBAR to use at shows.

On the Boards is celebrating in 2018 (and also in 2019)! OtB was founded by artists in 1978 — and incorporated as a non-profit in 1979 — so we're going to party for as long as we can. Expect fanfares, birthday parties, astrology, and celebrations galore. We'll dive into our illustrious past and history, and tread water in the bright future with you.

It feels good to support and be part of something that is great and magnificent… you work with the most brilliant people to continue the culture of contemporary arts performance. Plus, what's better than a drink comp and a free ticket to see a great show! — Joyce, OtB Volunteer

VOLUNTEER AT OtB No successful show happens without volunteers. The people who donate their time and passion to On the Boards allow us to pull off shows as smoothly as we do. Our volunteers are community members who are as interested in seeing art as they are in helping an arts organization. Volunteers help direct patrons, assist bartenders, collect tickets, help with Studio Suppers, and keep the theater clean. You can hang out, chat with guests and other volunteers, and we don’t make you wear any stuffy vests! Volunteers receive a free ticket to the show—including sold out shows—and a free drink ticket. All you have to do is sign up to be a reliable helper. Ready to volunteer? Send an email to volunteer@ontheboards.org for more information. We’ll contact you with upcoming opportunities and you’ll be able to choose dates that work with your schedule. ON THE BOARDS
