FUTURE CUES’ LONE STAR EVENT DRAWS 133 PLAYERS: Future Cues in Temple, Texas hosted the largest Lone Star event to date drawing 133 players on February 4th-5th. There were 96 Amateur players, 59 Open, and 24 ladies competing for almost 8k in prize money, with Amateurs competing in both divisions. New players to the tour included Chaser Rudder, Eric Brown, Conner Dennett, Joey Quinney, Karl McClendon, Phil Sidari and many more. It was a long weekend considering the number of tournament players and tables. On Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday, the Open and Amateur divisions were narrowed down to 32 each. The Open winners’ side final 8 saw Joey Barnes defeat Chase Rudder 7-6, Brent Thomas oust David Henson 7-3, Tom Mooney best Kevin Guimond 7-4, and Sam Martinez pass Travis Gunn 7-5. One more round passed and pitted Joey Barnes v. Tom Mooney for the hotseat match. At 6-5 Mooney’s favor, Barnes missed a crucial 7-ball which sewed up the hot seat for Mooney. The one-loss side saw Brian Hickman eliminate Guimond 7-4, Gunn best Corey Dordek 7-1, Rudder defeat Ronnie Felder 7-6, and Jason Pearce pass Henson 7-6. When the smoke cleared it was Thomas v. Rudder in the quarter finals. Thomas squeezed by Rudder to clench the oneloss side bracket but fell to a replenished Barnes in the semifinal. Mooney made quick work of Barnes in the final match, capturing his first Lone Star Tour title. There were some familiar faces in the Amateur division including David Escobedo, James Smiser, Drew McCoy, Robert Hitchcock, and some not so familiar ones including Ronnie Felder, Eric Brown, James Dugger, Carl Ray, and George M. Smith. It was Jason Pearce who captured the winner’s side over Steve Lindgren. Brent Thomas came on strong in the one-loss side blasting through Mooney, Brown, and Lindgren at the end, only to fall short of Pearce in the final, 5-2. The ladies division drew some heavy-hitters including Jennifer Kraber, Kim Pierce, and Kim Sanders. Amber Stone defeated Kim Sanders 5-4, and Jennifer Kraber bested Tabetha Lewis 5-0, which pitted Stone against Kraber for the hot seat. One the one-loss side, Jenni Sherman defeated Anh Tran 4-1 but fell to Tabetha Lewis 4-3. Also on the west side, Mary Gros defeated
MOONEY, PEARCE, AND KRABER CAPTURE WINS Monica Forest 4-2, but fell to Sanders 4-3. Sanders sewed up the one-loss side, besting Lewis 4-3 while Kraber ousted Stone for the hot seat, 5-2. Sanders eliminated Stone but fell to Kraber in the finals. Congratulations to Jennifer Kraber who captured the ladies side undefeated! Room owner Daniel Renkel and his staff hosted a first class event with great service the entire weekend. The tour hopes to make Future Cues a regular stop on the Lone Star Trail! THE LION LEAPS 2nd Consecutive Swanee Win
Named for beloved southern California player, Jay Swanson, the 16th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament (“the Swanee”) was hosted February 4-5 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. A tournament steeped in tradition, the event is a virtual who’s who of west coast US and Pacific Rim players. Produced by CueSports International (CSI) and sponsored by Hard Times Billiards, CSI and the Magic Ball Rack, the event is known for being a two day grinder with a heady 192 player field of heavy hitters. It is no small feat to cash in this event, but this year history took place. Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan won for a second consecutive year surviving a litany of fellow well known names including former Swanee champions Dave Hemmah (1996), Mitch Ellerman (2009), Amar Kang (2006) and the only other two time winner Morro Paez (1999 and 2001). Additionally, “The Lion” took out 2012 US Mosconi Cup team member Rodney Morris and “Mad Max” Eberle who himself has finished in the top three of the Swanee field 3 years (2005, 2011, and 2012). It was Eberle who initially knocked Pagulayan to the one loss side in the seventh round of the winner’s bracket. “The Lion” heaped revenge upon Eberle in the semi-finals sending “Mad Max” to the bleachers late Sunday night 7-2. After two days and 16 rounds the 192 field was now down to two players. In the middle of the night surrounded by a room full of dedicated spectators, the single race to 11 finals was
1 $3,000.00 2 $1,500.00 3 $1,000.00 4 $750.00 5/6 $535.00 7/8 $400.00 9/12 $300.00 13/16 $200.00 17/24 $175.00 25/32 $150.00 33/48 $100.00 49/64 $75.00
between Oscar “The Big O” Dominguez and Pagulayan. Dominguez’s road to the hot seat included the take down of Nick Spano, Corey Harper, Jim Hennessy, Brendan Crockett, Santos Sambajon Jr., Rodney Morris and Max Eberle. In what can only be described as one of the most unique finals of any tournament, Pagulayan’s repeat win almost did not take place. “The Lion” dominated the match early and jumped to a quick 10-3 lead. Then in game 14 “The Lion” pocketed a tough but makeable back cut shot on the 9-ball for the match win. However, in a split second it was evident the cue ball would also drop giving Dominguez the game instead of Pagulayan the win. The diminutive Pagulayan leaped in the air just as whitey wailed into a corner pocket. To add injury to insult when Pagulayan landed from his leap he sprained his calf and faced the rest of the match limping and having to adjust his stance to avoid further pain. Dominguez capitalized on the situation. Using strategic safety play “O” patiently took the score from 10-4 to 10-9. During those 5 games Pagulayan did have another opportunity to seal the deal but in a case of déjà-vu again scratched on a pocketed 9-ball. The cue ball caught the tip of one pocket and ricochet the ball into another pocket. In this situation it is hard not to think of that famous quote “It’s like a nightmare, isn’t it?” from The Color of Money.
The winning game came down to a moment of luck or redemption depending on the perspective. Dominguez again executed a strong safe leaving Pagulayan in the unenviable position of having to kick at the 1-ball for legal contact. Using sonic speed, Pagulayan sent the cue ball off a long rail, hit the one, then the rock careened off the opposite long rail into the pack of balls that housed the 9. The match money ball then gently rolled into a side pocket. This time whitey stayed securely on the table and “The Lion” was able to roar two years in a row. CueSports International (CSI) is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. In the past seven years CSI has directly paid out approximately seven million dollars to players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. CSI also produces independent events such as the US Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial, the US Open One Pocket Championship and the US Open 10-Ball Championship. WPBA Masters
With Limited Edition Gold Crown Anniversary Pool Cue Bristol, Wis. (February 3, 2012) – It may be cold outside, but things heated up during the Woman’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) Masters Tournament hosted at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Using her new Brunswick Billiards’ Limited Edition Gold Crown Anniversary Pool Cue, Ewa Mataya Laurance, “The Striking Viking,” came out on top defeating No. 2-ranked Allison Fisher, a veteran champion and fellow Billiards Congress of America Hall of Famer. “It was a true battle of champions, and we’re thrilled to see Ewa rise to the top. Brunswick Billiards prides itself by creating top-of-the-line billiards equipment, and we are delighted one of our new Gold Crown Anniversary Pool Cues served as her trusted companion throughout the tournament,” said Austin Rothbard, president, Brunswick Billiards. “As our spokesperson for 24 years, Ewa continues to champion the sport of billiards as she shares her knowledge, tips and love of the game with pool enthusiasts around the world.” Laurance took an early 2-1 lead in the race to 7, and continued her winning streak until Fisher caught up and tied the score at 5-5. After two more intense rounds Laurance finally defeated Fisher 7-5, taking home a grand prize of $10,000 and another title of WPBA Masters Champion. "Now that I have my game and confidence back, I feel great about the rest of the year on tour,” said Ewa
Laurance. “I have at least five or six major events left to play this year, and I can't wait!" Brunswick Billiards’ Limited Edition Gold Crown Anniversary Pool Cue became available in stores nationwide in October of 2011. This was Laurance’s first WPBA Masters win in 14 years. Viewers can tune in to ESPN from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, March 18 to catch the televised airing of the three final-round, one-hour matches. WHERE KINGS ARE CROWNED THE 2012 WPA WORLD 8-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS MONDAY IN THE ONLY PLACE TO EVER HOLD THE EVENT..FUJAIRAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES The international pool scene finally kicks off this February as the best pool players from all corners of the globe descend upon the mountainous emirate of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to contest the WPA 2012 World 8-ball Championship. The tournament will begin Monday Feb. 13 and run through the final on Feb. 17 at the Expo Centre in central Fujairah and offers a total of $156,000 in prize money with $20,000 going to the winner. A stellar cast of 96 pool greats will make up the main field beginning on the 13th. Fujairah is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, and the only one on the Gulf of Oman in the country's east instead of on the Persian Gulf (the other six emirates). Fujairah is the youngest of the seven emirates that make up the country. It is located in the central part of the Al Hajar Mountains. The capital of the emirate is the city of Fujairah. The American game of 8-ball is arguably the world’s most popular and widely played cue sport, played and enjoyed by millions around the world every day. Interestingly this year marks only the 7th time that the WPA 8-ball World Championship has ever been contested, and all in Fujairah. The list of champions may be short, but they read like a who’s who of great pool players. The first winner of the World 8-ball Championship back in 2005 was none other than the legend, Efren “Bata” Reyes of the Philippines. In 2006, 16 year old Taiwanese sensation Wu Chia Ching won the 8-ball world title just months after miraculously winning the World 9-ball Championship. The Philippines’ Ronnie Alcano captured the crown in 2007 also right after winning the World 9-ball Championship. The following year saw German great Ralf Souquet win his first world 8-ball title. The tournament was not played in 2009. England’s Karl Boyes won the 2010 title with a nail biting 13-12 win over the Netherlands’ Niels Feijen.
Leading the pack this year will be the defending champion and current world #1 and 2011 WPA Player of the Year, Dennis Orcullo of the Philippines. Orcullo won his first world title last year in Fujairah when he beat Feijen in the final 10-3. Orcullo used that amazing victory as a springboard for a sensational all around year in 2011. Orcullo certainly comes into this year’s championship as one of the heavy favorites but he will surely have all he can handle from the expected all star cast on hand. As of press time most of the world’s top 36 players have confirmed participation and more will surely be added in the coming week. Among those are World 9-ball champion and world number 2 Yukio Akagariyama of Japan, current and back to back US Open Champion Darren Appleton(world #3) of the UK, World 10-ball Champion Huidji See(World # 5) of the Netherlands, back to back runner up Feijen, the Philippine great and World # 6 Lee Van Corteza, Chinese Taipei’s Chang Jung Lin(# 7), China Open winner Chris Melling(# 8) of the UK, German greats Souquet(#11) and Thorsten Hohmann(13), and Finnish star Mika Immonen(19). Pay attention especially to the various unknown Filipino players who ply their trade as house pros in pool halls and training centers throughout the UAE, Qatar, Saudi and other places where pool is growing around the Middle East. Not only can these Filipino players play world class pool, they are comfortable in the local surroundings and culture. A change in the format this year will surely please the players as all matches throughout the championship will be played in the alternate break format. This change has been implemented in order to stop the blowouts which had been happening with regular frequency over the last few years. There is no live international television coverage of the 2012 World 8-ball championship. However, the WPA will be providing up to the minute coverage on our website,www.wpa-pool.com. We will be on hand in Fujairah bringing you all the action with live scoring of all matches, in depth articles on the goings on posted several times a day, as well as blow by blow coverage of big matches via the WPA’s Twitter page, @poolwpa.

RUM RUNNER
For Karl Boyes, winning the World 8-ball title in 2010 fulfilled a lifelong dream for the talented Englishman. The 29 year old from Blackpool began his billiard career when he was 14 years old playing English 8-ball, a game similar to American 8-ball but played on smaller tables and with red and yellow balls. He played the sport for nearly 10 years and became one of the top players. Boyes turned to American pool when International Pool Tour came along in 2004, offering huge prize funds and 8-ball as the game of choice. When the IPT folded a few years later, Boyes decided to stick with the American game of pool, and quickly became an elite player in the pro ranks. In 2007 he made it all the way to the semi-finals of the World 9-ball Championship in Manila. 2010 was Boyes’ breakout year. He won the World 8-ball title with a nail biting 13-12 victory over Holland’s Feijen. Boyes was a member of Team England which won the World Team Championship in Germany. Later that same year, he made it to European Mosconi Cup team, and played brilliantly in helping Team Europe capture the prestigious team cup. From that high he saw his game slip in 2011, falling to 32nd in the WPA world rankings. Boyes says his focus shifted after he and his girlfriend had their first child. He also said he’s been grappling lately with a ‘pool demon,’ that intangible nagging voice that many pros in this brutally tough sport often have to deal with. WPA Press Officer Ted Lerner recently caught with the personable Boyes and got his views on his career, that persistent pool demon, what it’s like to play 8-ball at the elite level, and his chances at next week’s World 8-ball championship in Fujairah, UAE. TL: How did being an English 8-ball player help you adjust to playing American 8-ball? KB: Well with me growing up playing 8-ball it is obviously my best game so it was just a case of learning how the cues, balls, and table play as it’s all different sizes. TL: What did it feel like when you won the World 8-ball championship? KB: It felt like a relief to be honest. People through your life tell you you’re going to be a world champion so when you finally do this it's a great sense of achievement. Also to win the 8-ball world championship is even more special as it’s the game I grew up playing. TL: What's the most pressure you've ever felt at the pool table or in a tournament? KB: There's a few occasions really but the ones that stand out are at 12-12 in the World 8-ball final(vs. Niels Feijen) because I sort of threw a great chance away at 12-10 so I thought I had blown it. Also the World Team Championships final where I played Lee Van Corteza and it was hill-hill and it was a massive point for the team. And probably the biggest of them all was the Mosconi Cup in London as its live TV and your part of a team. TL: You had a really great year in 2010, but not quite as successful in 2011. What changed in your game last year? How will you turn things around this year? KB: Well in 2010 I was 80% focused on pool and showed exactly what Karl Boyes is capable of. And this was still with a little demon inside me that hates what pool is about. In 2011 Me and my girlfriend had our first child and pool took a big back step and that little demon really took over my head. Now in 2012 it will again be a difficult year but with the help of my family and sponsors I hope to do better but again I'm constantly fighting off this demon inside me, Other pool players seem to handle all the crap better than I do. Whether that's good on them or good for me who knows? We shall see what the future holds for Karl
Boyes the pool player. TL: How do you think you'll do in this year's World 8-ball championship? KB: Last year I felt really confident and was playing good pool. Then in the last 64 I had one shot so who knows? Maybe you could tell me?(he laughs) I have practiced hard for this but it's(the World 8-ball Championship) such a toss of the coin tournament like most pool tournaments. TL: Millions of people around the world play 8-ball in bars and pubs and pool halls for fun. Of course the rules are the same but as a game, what’s the difference between recreational 8-ball and professional 8-ball? KB: Well it's all down to taking out the rack/clearance the best possible way. Most amateurs will just try pot the balls as where in 8-ball you should try work back from the 8-ball to work out your best pattern. TL: What’s the hardest thing about 8-ball at the pro level? KB: The hardest thing about 8-ball at the pro level is it’s a little too easy on the equipment we play on. The pockets should be 4 inches maybe slightly smaller. Then the patterns would really show up etc. and I'd win it every year then.(He laughs). TL: What do you love about 8-ball? KB: My main love of 8-ball is when your opponent makes a mistake you should win a large percentage of the racks as opposed to in rotation games(9-ball and 10-ball) where a lot of luck can still help the weaker player. *The 2012 World 8-ball Championship begins in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates on Monday, February 13th and runs through to February 17th. The WPA will be providing up to the minute coverage of all the happenings on its website, www.wpa-pool.com. WPA Press Officer Ted Lerner will be on hand in Fujairah bringing you all the action with live scoring of all matches, in depth articles on the goings on posted several times a day, as well as blow by blow coverage of big matches via the WPA’s Twitter page, @poolwpa. **The World Pool and Billiard Association(WPA) is the world governing body of the sport of pool. The WPA is also the member organization for pool of the World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS), the international umbrella organization encompassing all the major cue sports.
I'M CONSTANTLY FIGHTING OFF THIS DEMON INSIDE ME 2010 WORLD 8-BALL CHAMPION KARL BOYES OPENS UP ABOUT WINNING THE WORLD TITLE AND HOW HARD IT IS TO STAY ON TOP IN THE PRO GAME.
Future of Seminole Pro Tour
The Seminole Pro Tour would like to thank all of the fans, players, room owners and especially sponsors who have supported the tour through the past five years that the tour has been in existence. It is with great sorrow and lament that the Seminole Tour will not have a season in 2012 and will continue to suspend operations indefinitely. From its small beginnings as a regional tour in South Florida, to its growth as the premier national 10-ball tour in the country, the Seminole Pro Tour has always strived to put the player’s and fan’s interest first. The operations were not munsoned, but rather an executive decision to suspend operations was made. The amount of support that the Tour has had has been overwhelming. The countless correspondence that has been received expressing their support for the Tour has not gone unnoticed. The Seminole Pro Tour and the Seminole Tribe would like to say, “Sho-naa-bish (thank you).” The Tour would especially like to thank a few people specifically. John DiToro, the creator of the original Seminole Pro Tour, is not only one of the best tour directors, but also a wonderful person. It was his vision and dedication that got the Seminole Pro Tour to the heights of the industry. John is a true professional and his work ethic is second to none. Thank you, John. The Seminole Tribe had the pleasure to sponsor a couple of players. Corey Deuel, the Prince of Pool, was a true cornerstone to the betterment of the Tour’s operations. Corey’s professionalism and true love of the game helped the Tour grow leaps and bounds. If not for Corey, the Tour would have never been able to reach the levels that it did. Thank you, Corey. The many sponsors and room owners that helped make the Tour possible are another group of people that were essential to the Tour’s operations. Without dedicated room owners and sponsors, the Tour would have never been able to reach the number of fans all over the country and the world. One room owner who stood by the Tour through thick and thin has been Rocky McElroy. No matter what the situation, The Tour could always count on Rocky to be there with his support and the support of his pool room, Capone’s. Thank you to all the sponsors, room owners and Rocky. The Tour could not have grown without all of the great players that have honored the Tour by playing in the tournaments. The Seminole Pro Tour was unique in that it allowed average players to play alongside of World Champions. The Tour has seen several great matches and players in each tournament. If the great players would have never supported the Tour, there would have never been a national Tour. Thank you to all players who played in the tournaments. The Tour would like to thank all of the staff and workers who dedicated themselves and sacrificed their time to make sure the Tour ran as smoothly as possible. Gerry Mayen, Tiffany Marquez, Kevin Pickard, Brenda Mello, Bobby Frank, OB Osceola and Elrod Bowers all had their mark on the operations of the Tour. Without their hard work in the office and on the road, the Tour would not have been so successful. Thank you, Seminole Pro Tour staff. Lastly, the tour would like to thank all of the fans who supported the Tour. So many great fans came to see the events all over the country and thousands more watched online through our web streams. The fans are who the Tour was created for and their unconditional support is appreciated. Thank you, fans. The Seminole Tribe of Florida has decided to pursue other operations within the Tribe and therefore will not be considering any further pool-related ventures at this time. TheSeminoleprotour.com website will remain running so the final inventory of merchandise can be sold with extremely reduced prices.

TEXTILE MANUFACTURER RETURNS Twenty years after it was bought by U.S.-based Milliken & Company, the Stroud textile business Milliken Woollen Speciality Products has returned to British ownership. The business has been christened WSP Textiles Ltd, with three senior members of the management team joining a new board of directors.
Dunlop, Wilson, Head and Babolat tennis balls used at many tournaments including Wimbledon and the French Open. SuperPro tournament billiard cloth is used in major tours and tournaments all over the world including the Seminole Pro Tour in the USA, and German National Championships. It is also endorsed by world champion players such as Daryl Peach and John Schmidt.
The acquisition was arranged by Vespa Capital LLP, a private equity firm that helps management teams acquire and develop the businesses they manage.
WSP Textiles is re-branding the tournament quality pool table cloth Strachan SuperPro, and it continues to be available in a range of 8 colours.
Commenting on the investment in WSP Textiles, Nigel Hammond of Vespa Capital said: “We are delighted to be investing in a world class, UK based, manufacturer and look forward to supporting the management team in delivering their investment plans. We believe the number of people playing tennis, billiards, and snooker will increase around the world, particularly in Asia, and this will underpin the company’s growth prospects.”
Charlotte-based Sterling Gaming has the distribution rights for SuperPro, a nap-free worsted billiard cloth manufactured for the American pool market.
The original company has made cloth since the 13th century and the WSP acronym recognises the founding mill owners, Winterbotham, Strachan and Playne.
“SuperPro offers pool players responsive ball-control characteristics, plus the Spillguard treatment, which protects the cloth from liquid spills and stains, and quality and continuity of supply has been assured by the new owners.”
Today the Strachan brand dominates the snooker market. Playne’s tennis ball cloth can be found on
Commenting on the acquisition, Scott Taylor, Sterling’s president, said: “We have been given the good news that the new owners plan to invest in their UK operations, where billiard cloth has been made for several centuries.

The $1000 Added Amateur event would kick off Saturday with 56 players showing up which included 7 ladies taking advantage of the $20 entry. The Tampa Bay area is known for being a very strong pool playing community and this one would prove it to be correct as 5 players in the last 6 all play regularly at Stroker’s pool room. Room owner Jose Del Rio was looking strong in the event making his way to the hoseat match with some strong wins over Master table mechanic Wes Burden 7-4, Jeanie Seaver 7-5, Sascha Kauper 7-4 and then Jason Bowen 7-5. Mike Monosky would be his opponent as he made his way there with strong wins over John Donnelly 7-5, Sherry Sandaler 7-5,
Julio Del Pozo 7-4, Dan Whitten 7-2 and then Art Seaman 7-5. The hotseat match would go in favor of Mike Monosky as he grinded out a strong 7-5 win. While all this was going on big money Jason Richko who had taken a 7-6 loss to journey man Art Seaman would go on to win 6 straight wins to before losing a hard fought match to Jason Bowne 5-4 to end up in 4th place. Bowen would then take down room owner Jose Del Rio leaving him in 3rd place and put himself in the final to play Monsosky. The Final was all Bowen as he cruised through the set with a 7-2 win to set up a 1 rack sudden death Shoot out. The one rack shoot out is always a nervy affair and this one would be no different Monosky would run the balls to the 6 only to miss, Bowen would hold his nerve and run the last 4 to take his first Poison Tour Title. Congrats to Kira Brown who mad top lady player and received $50
The $1000 Added open changed to 10-Ball this season and kicked off with a very strong 32 man field. With the likes of Corey Deuel, Mike Davis, Tony Crosby, James Roberts, Louis Altes and Jim Oddy this event would be one to watch. Corey Deuel would be the man to beat as he made his way to the hotseat with wins over Carrie Moxley 7-3, Richard Knight 7-5, Tim Parisian 7-4, Tony Crosby 7-1 and then a hotseat win over Mike Davis 7-5. On the one loss side Jason Richko would go down to Trevor Braymore 5-2 and Jose Del Rio would go down to James Roberts 5-0 to leave them in 7th-8th place. Louis Altes would then beat Braymore and Tony Crosby would take Down Roberts to leave them in 5th-6th place. Crosby would then go onto beat Louis Altes 6-1 leaving him in 4th, Mike Davis would end
the run for Crosby with a 6-3 win to give him a revenge final match with Deuel. The Final would be a tight affair with both Players trading racks but Deuel would come out on top with a strong 7-5 win and the first 10-Ball title on the Poison Tour. The Tour would like to thank Stroker’s Pool room and its staff for hosting another great event. We would also like to thank Poison Cues our title sponsor for supplying the best cues on the market. The next event will be at Cuephoria Billiards CafÊ, Winter Park (Orlando) Fl, February 18th-19th 2012 this should be a great event in a brand new room. We look forward to seeing you there.
