The Man Behind the Super Billiards Expo BY: DON “CHEESE” AKERLOW The 20th Annual Super Billiards Expo (SBE) was held March 8-11, 2012 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Philadelphia, PA. Once again brought to you by Allen Hopkins Productions and run in conjunction with the TAP Rally in the Valley. This has become a huge event! I called Allen to find out his opinion on some of the things that were concerning the players and of course the success of the event. The first Super Billiards Expo was held in Secaucus, NJ at the Meadowlands Convention Center and when I asked Allen how the event has grown he responded, “Enormously! When we started in 1993 we started with 40 pool tables and about 27 booths. Some exhibitors took two booths so it was less than 27 actual exhibitors. We had the open event and I don’t know if I had the kids there then. I know I didn’t have the Seniors or the Super Seniors, didn’t have the Pro-Am. I think it was just the open event.” The SBE moved the next year to the Valley Forge Convention Center and remained there for the next 18 years expanding and taking up more space at the center until they finally had to move to their current location, a facility of over 200,000 square feet. A short 6 mile move down the road to a facility that is twice the size of the Valley Forge Convention Center - plenty of room to grow and plenty of parking. The SBE was informed after the 2011 Expo that the convention center was being closed and has now been renovated into a casino. So there was no possible way that they could stay. This is a short 4 day event but is packed with wall to wall pool. According to Allen, “it’s actually like pool heaven. All the best pool players in the world are here, all the best cue makers in the world are here, all the best table people are here.” Allen brought in 180 Diamond tables for the amateur events and 13 Diamond tables for the pro event and practice tables. And attendance was astounding, Allen said there were 979 players in the Open Division, 175 in the Women’s Division, 365 in the Senior Division and 157 in the Super Senior Division for the Amateur Events. Junior events 17 & under had 64 players and the 12 & under Division had 50, not to mention the 32 player ProAm Bar Box Event and 68 players in the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship”. Besides these events you have the WPA World Artistic Championship, Fury 14-1 Challenge and the Challenge of Champions 3 Cushion Tournament. That takes us through all that Allen Hopkins offers, you also have to factor in 160 TAP teams of 8 players each for a total of almost 3200 players. You can see why this could be considered heaven for a pool player. A unique addition for the players that attended the SBE was the phone app created by Allen Hopkins Jr. It was available for both iPhone and Android phones. Allen had my call on speaker, when Allen Jr. spoke about the app. Through the app you locate vendors, find their booth on the floor plan and get their contact information. You could also check out tournament information and brackets and scan the vendors QR Codes for special offers. Allen Jr said he also had a text message feature available. This will be a big plus going forward. Each year the show changes a little from the year before. New problems arise and are addressed, corrected or accounted for in some way. This year being in a new venue was a challenge for the staff of the SBE but they are aware of the problems and are working with the expo center to make things better next year. Some of the issues were lighting, food vendors, restrooms and a secure area for the vendors. I have found in life, when you think you have everything planned down to the last detail, something happens and you have to change and adjust and make the best of the situation. Everything is a work in progress. I can attest to that through the 4 pool magazines that we publish and you can be assured that both Allen and his staff will next year make these problems disappear. Allen had high praises for his staff, the players, exhibitors and the attendees at the show. The town of Valley Forge provided shuttle service from the Radisson (the host hotel) to the convention center during the show. All in all the show was another success and the problems that did arise are being taken care of for next year. Jenny "The Asian Assassin" Lee marks her first major win this year by defeating Stacy Novack in the finals of the 'Tiger So Cal Ladies Tour'. After two days of grueling play by some of California's most talented female pool players, it was these two veterans to the Tiger SCLT who remained to battle it out in the raceto-9 final match. Due to WPBA player (and Tournament Director) Melissa Herndon's early promotional efforts plus several mini-qualifiers run by Raquel McCluskey prior to the event; and despite a rather stormy weekend looming in the skies of Southern California, On Cue Billiards in La Mesa remained in the crosshairs of 29 female gunslingers and a host of railbirds for this double elimination, race-to-7 event.

Many expected to see more from some of our usual suspects, but the early upsets in this year's first Tiger stop included Vicki Wade, Melinda Huang, Hiroko Makiyama, Brook Thomason, Shauna Madrigal, Barbara Lee, Shar Vanderstyne, Nellie Del Rosario and Fran Smith. Probably the longest journey made to play the event was that of Emilyn Callado's, hailing from San Francisco. Emilyn remained in the top 8 finishers, even after losing early to Stacy Novack. She powered through three more matches against Shannon Powell, Brandy Pamintuan and Nellie Del Rosario on Saturday before falling to Melissa Morris in her one and only match on Day 2 of the event. Emilyn’s close 7-5 loss against Melissa landed her tied for 7th/8th in the tournament. Despite the handful of talented veterans competing, two tough greenhorns, Dara Nakagawa and Lila Woodland found themselves in the top eight players on Day 2. Lila, from San Diego, defeated Dara in her first match, and then sent former WPBA player Melissa Morris to the loser’s side…showing her determination to do well in the event. But she hit a wall with her first loss against Trinh Lu from Rosemead, CA. On Sunday, Lila finally met her fate, finishing in 5th place after a rematch against Melissa, where she just couldn't gain the momentum she had against the "Cue-

Meanwhile, Fountain Valley's Dara Nakagawa fought an uphill battle after losing her first match to Lila, trudging her way to 8th place by defeating Raquel McCluskey, Hiroko Makiyama and Wendy Chou. Dara’s run to the finish was cut short by the very talented Tina Pawloski, who's fast-paced play and pool knowledge was on display throughout their match. The reigning 2011 State Champion and eventual 2nd place finisher of this event, Stacy Novack earned her spot in the hot seat by defeating Verni Flauta, Emilyn Callado, Tina Pawloski, Jenny Lee and Trinh Lu. Jenny Lee won her first three matches of Day 1, beating Melinda Huang, Brook Thomason, Wendy Chou before suffering her first loss to Stacy. Jenny then came back on Day 2 to defeat Tina Pawloski, Melissa Morris and Trinh Lu, which earned her a rematch with Stacy and guaranteeing her a 2nd place award for this event. But Jenny Lee had other plans... The final match between Jenny and Stacy was quite a contrast of styles. Jenny Lee had already played several matches on Sunday and was well instroke for the final match. She seemed to be playing faster and more aggressively than normal. Jenny has been known to play at a slower pace in the past, but today it seemed like she was moving in 'fast forward', giving few chances to Stacy and leaving her tough on most safeties; even playing some very good kickshots and getting good rolls. Stacy's demeanor remained consistent as she took her time to execute, but she seemed to play a bit tighter than normal and sometimes even a little hesitant. Capitalizing on this, Jenny jumped ahead early in the first half of the match to an impressive 6-1 game lead. A couple of sloppy breaks by Jenny, who sent the cue-ball flying off the table, could have been a good turning point for Stacy. She had ball in hand and wide open racks, but unfortunately she failed to close them out. Those two missed chances, coupled with the already distant lead, proved to be an impossible climb back for Stacy, and the match finally ended in a 9-2 defeat by Jenny Lee. In a conversation with the 20-year pool veteran after the event, Stacy stated,

"I haven't sought out extra help or knowledge with my game for quite sometime, but now feel that I am in a place that is receptive to elevating my game to the next level." By day's end, Jenny Lee was visibly exhausted and even stated at a break between games that she was enduring some physical pain and discomfort brought on by leg cramps, which started just before the match. Nonetheless she kept her mind on the game and showed no signs of weakness. Jenny's laser-like focus cut through her opponents in her typical 'Assassin' style. Yet again, Melissa Herndon is to be congratulated for another seamless Tiger SCLT event, sponsored by Tiger Billiard Products, PoolDawg and Delta-13 and streamed live from On Cue Billiards in La Mesa, CA by Daniel Busch of POV Pool who stepped in for veteran streamer, Andy Chen. Chris Kendrick went undefeated on the Great Southern Billiard Tour stop on the weekend of March 17-18, but not before being challenged in the finals by Travis Dorn, who won seven on the loss side to meet him in those finals. It was Kendrick's first win on the GSBT and the first appearance in the finals for both he and Dorn. The $1,500-added event drew 53 entrants to Raisin' Caine's in Inman, SC. From among the winners' side final four, Kendrick defeated Josh Newman 7-6 (Newman going to 10), while Steve Holman was busy sending Shonte Barnes west 7-5. Kendrick got into the hot seat with a 7-2 and waited on Dorn. With two loss-side matches chalked up already, Dorn defeated Danny Turner 9-1 and Steve Cox 9-3 to meet up with Newman. Barnes drew Justin Mathis, who'd defeated Jake Weaver 7-5 (Weaver had been responsible for sending Dorn to the loss side) and Brandon Blackburn 7-4. Dorn downed Newman 9-6 to move into the quarterfinals against Mathis, who'd shut out Barnes.

His tournament trail of 6 wins and 1 loss, included wins over Tony Ignomirello 8 - 7; Edie Perez 7 - 4 ; Quin Y. SANTORA TAKES THE GREEN AT SHARKS Sharks (Shawnee, KS, suburb of Kansas City) hosted this new favorite tournament on their 20 7-foot Shelti tables. 8-ball champions from around the Kansas City area attended, foregoing the popular St. Patrick's Day celebrations/ parades for the "more important task" of winning this event. Three sponsors contributed to this event to help make it a success: Sharks Billiards (sharkskc.com) Paul Gerni (paulgerni.com) Tiger Products (tigerproducts.com) International pro and trick shot champion Paul Gerni met each contestant as they arrived at Sharks to sign up and warm up for the tournament, and presented each player with a St. Patrick's Day gift, a green laminated 10-layer Tiger Emerald tip, for their cues. Gerni also spoke briefly at the players meeting, and announced that he had given away all the 24 tips that were sent by Tiger, plus a few extras from his personal box of Tiger tips (which besides the Emerald, also includes the Sniper, Everest, and Onyx tips). All players were all thankful to Tiger for the tip donation, a perfect touch for the "Irish" weekend. A few players have already had their gifted Emerald tips put on their cues, saying the Tiger gift was not only thoughtful, but timely, since their cues needed help. The tournament was 8-Ball, double elimination, and the low $15 entry fee per player generated a nice prize fund that was further enhanced by contributions by Tiger, Sharks, and by Gerni. They will look forward to another "Irish" tournament like this one again, the players happily admitted. Sharks also provided $1 beers in a bucket and half-price pizza along with the normal menu specials, like wraps, steaks, french dips, etc. Sharks also gave players a bright green Sharks-"Beyond Billiards" St. Patrick's Day T-shirt.
Sharks will host a two-day 9-Ball tournament this Saturday/Sunday, March 24-25. There is a $35 entry for this, $25 for the prize fund. The field is expected to be full. Sharks will limit entries to only the first 32 players paid. Play starts each day at 2pm, tables will be open for free practice beforehand. Paul Gerni has again agreed to be on hand for the 2-tournament weekend (Big table 9-ball, and barbox 9-ball!). In the St. Patrick's Day 8-ball event, Dennis Boyer, James Markley, Jake Santora, and Rick Carlton were all off to a fast start, going undefeated in their first four matches. James Markley played well throughout a tough draw of matches and met Jake Santora for the bubble, losing a close match, then went to the one-loss side of the board to fend off the best of that side, to earn another shot at little Jake. He did manage to take the first set from Jake on his return match, then both agreed to split the money and give the title to Jake. Over $600 in cash and prizes were awarded.

Many times while playing, you face a table layout without simple options to pocket shots. There are only bad, very bad and “%?&*@#^” choices. All of us have watched as various bar bangers seize upon this opportunity to demonstrate the width and breadth of their imagination. Actually these guys provide you with an amazing educational instance of stupidity. Some sort of silly shot will be called, often detailing three or more rails. Why do they do this? It’s seems to be a bit insane to attempt something that can help lose the game. When playing idiots of this caliber, take ‘em for every dollar you can get. (Who knows? They might smarten up later and actually start thinking before shooting.) While it’s fun to watch a bar banger address a poor table layout, you need to be the Intelligent Player and think before you shoot. When faced with a situation beyond your ability to shoot out of the situation, the proper response is to make life difficult for your opponent. And the best way to do this is to be a defensive shot. Instead of considering some low percentage shot, how about figuring out how to make life difficult for your opponent? If you can see the object ball, you are the person in charge of the table. You can decide what kind of table layout you want to hand over to your poor unsuspecting victim. Since all aggressive options are dependent upon billiard god luck, think of this as an opportunity to tease your opponent. With an intentional defensive shot, you don’t give away the game by giving your opponent an easy way to win. (It’s
never a good idea to let the billiard gods control your luck.) Your playing philosophy must be, “Nothing for me? Nothing for you!” When faced with the impossibility of running out, do some proper tactical thinking. When looking at a table layout with the intention to shoot defensively, several possible shots will be immediately available. More can be identified with another 15 seconds of thought. Tailor the selection to your personal ability and the capability of your opponent. If he has a problem with banks, set one up for him. If he can’t make a long shot, move the cue ball far, far away. The lower the skill level of your opponent, the simpler it is to give him a near-impossible shot. Even a sharp cut on an object ball close to a pocket will give some trouble. When your opponent is a better player, safety shots have to be a little more sophisticated. Select a shot that will provide more of a challenge. Keep in mind two things – 1) slow speed shots are easier to control and 2) simple is best. If the ending object ball position is important, put your hand on the table location and work out the cue ball/object ball angle and speed. If the final cue ball position is critical, put your hand on the location and work out the details. The learning curve is very easy and quick. On the practice table, a few dozen shots quickly teach you that simple solutions at slower speeds get excellent results. When you do mis-shoot, think through the shot and figure out how you should have done it.

CHIEH YU CHOU Repeats as Amway Champ
Chieh Yu Chou of Chinese Taipei defeated Jasmin Ouschan in the finals of the 2012 Amway Cup to take her second Amway title in four years. Ouschan helped the effort a bit with a pair of scratches that cost her dearly as Chou marched right out to a 5-0 lead in the final. But Ouschan was only waiting her turn. She fought back in her usual take-no-prisoners style to tie the match at 9-9 in the race to 11. When the 7 ball escaped the orders from Ouschan in the next rack Chou had an easy clearance which she followed with a break and run to take the title 11-9. Ouschan had fought the very good fight to get her seat in the finals. She won her quarter-final and semi-final matches by the same score, 9-7 over both Ga Young Kim and XiaoTing Pan. But Chou may have had an even tougher route to maneuver. She had to get past Player of the Year Siming Chen, once leading 6-0 in that match, and Kelly Fisher, whom she bested 9-7. It was also Chou who sent Jeanette Lee home early in the single-elimination rounds. The format of the Amway Cup has 48 women beginning in group stages of 6 players in each group. They play round-robin until the field is cut in half. Those 24 players are seeded into the final bracket by their performance in the group stages. The top 8 performers are seeded into the second round of play and are thus allowed to escape the first round of danger.

The Predator Tour’s fifth stop of the season took place at the Queens pool room Steinway Billiards over the weekend of March 17-18. The two-day event kicked off on Saturday with 62 players playing in the Amateur event.

This event featured a wide range of players, from beginners to top amateurs and aspiring pros. It was cool to see many of the players who we recently saw at the 2012 Super Billiards Expo with new gear, a fresh perspective, and a hunger to improve.

In the finals, it was all Ron Mason, who riding high from his clutch 9-8 win over Daniel Dagotdot. Ron defeated Kapriel 9-4, and and capped off an impressive weekend of play.

HOT-SEAT MATCH After their wins in the final four of the winner’s bracket Daniel Dagotdot took on Kapriel Delimelkonoglu, in a match where Kapriel clutched out the final game to earn a hill-hill 9-8 win, earning him a spot in the finals. On the one-loss side, others were still battling it out for another chance at victory. ROBB SAEZ In this event, Robb’s overall performance was masterful. The former New York-area player has come full circle, and re-connected to his roots with a renewed passion, focus, and energy to win. Robb captured this event in impressive fashion, through explosive play. Robb’s road to the finals featured wins over Ariel Rivera 7-1, Jennifer Barretta 7-2, Zion Zvi 7-4, and Tony Robles 7-4. While Robb waited in the hot seat, Israel’s former #1 player Zion Zvi was busy making a comeback for a rematch against him. Zion worked his way into the finals hot after 7-2 wins over Jennifer Barretta and Tony Robles. WPBA pro Jennifer Barretta had another strong showing at this Predator event with a 4th place finish. This final match between Zion and Robb was exciting to watch, as both players showcased a mix of offensive shotmaking and big breaks. Zion has recently improved his break, giving him more consistency and power, which allowed him grind back after Robb caught an early lead in this match. ZION ZVI When the dust settled, Rob Saez grinded out a final score win of 7-6 for an undefeated showing in this event, earning him a win in his first Predator Tour event of the season. Congratulations to Robb Saez for the impressive win.

CASANZIO WINS CLIFTON PARK
Ron Casanzio notched his second Joss NE 9-Ball Tour stop win of the year at Trick Shots Billiards in Clifton Park, NY on the weekend of March 17th and 18th. Casanzio made his way through the field of 35 players and took the hotseat with a hill-hill win over Jeremy Sossei. Sossei then dropped the semi-final match to Greg Antonakos 9-6. Antonakos had been undefeated all day Saturday, but lost to Casanzio midway through Sunday play. The final match was true double elimination, and Casanzio would need both sets as he dropped the first set to Antonakos 9-6. Casanzio got things together in the second set of the finals and won 9-5 for first place in the event. The second chance tournament on Sunday saw seventeen players battle it out. When the smoke cleared, it was Doug Wells holding off a late charge from Bruce Carroll to win the event. The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour is at Salt City Billiards in Syracuse, NY next weekend (March 24th - 25th). Mike Zuglan is now taking entries for the season finale at the Turning

Megan Smith takes JPNEWT at VIP JPNEWT took its March 17-18, 2012 tour to VIP Billiards in Catonsville, MD. VIP is a new venue added to the JPNEWT tour thithis year With $500 added to the prize fund, eighteen ladies put their skills to the test to compete for top dollar. VIP's own Jess Didier joined in on the event as well as, new comer Danielle Hecht. JPNEWT is growing, adding new members each month this year. From the top half of the bracket, Briana Miller dominated the field as she sent Charlynn Dzambo 7-0, Kathy Friend 7-2 and My-Hanh Lac 7-2 to the 1-loss side. Meanwhile, from the bottom half of the bracket, Megan Smith smashed through Ji-Hyun Park 7-0, Courtney Hall 7-1, Judie Wilson 7-0. Both Briana and Megan faced-off with a hill-hill match sending Briana to the 1-loss side as well. Megan patiently waits for her next opponent from the hot seat. Tour director, Linda Shea, worked her way through several rounds on the 1-loss side (defeating Susan Shinn 7-5, Eugenia Gyftopoulos 7-2, My-Hanh Lac 7-3, and Judie Wilson 7-3) before meeting a close match against Briana Miller. A hanging 9-ball in the pocket caused an upset to Miller, leaving Shea an easy one-nine combo win. This win gave Shea the opportunity to face-off against Megan Smith for first place. However, after a long wait for the finals, Megan maintained focus and didn't loose her fire, taking a 7-3 win over Linda. Congratulations Megan on your top notch performance and win! SHUFF GOES UNDEFEATED Brandon Shuff got by Brett Stottlemyer twice - once in the hot seat and again in the finals - to take first place in the Action Pool Tour stop on the weekend of March 17-18. The event, the seventh stop on the 2011/2012 tour, drew 54 entrants to First Break Cafe in Sterling, VA. Though unblemished by defeat, Shuff's sevenmatch journey to the winners' circle wasn't without its challenges. He chalked up 56 racks against his opponent's 33; a 63% winning percentage, suggesting that he bent a little, but didn't break. He survived a fourth-round, double hill challenge from R.J. Carmona, which put him among the winners' side final four to face Paul Helms. Stottlemyer, in the meantime, was having a somewhat easier time of it. He was awarded a bye in the opening round, and defeated his first three opponents by an aggregate score of 24-6, at which point, he met up with Mike Davis in the other winners' side semifinal. Shuff defeated Helms 8-3 and moved into his first of two against Stottlemyer, who'd sent Davis west 8-4. The hot seat match was Shuff's second double hill battle, and Stottlemyer's first. Shuff prevailed and sat in the hot seat waiting for Stottlemyer to get back. Davis moved to the loss side and met up with Carmona, who'd started his loss-side work with a double hill win over tour director Ozzy Reynolds, and then downed Brian Deska 6-3. Helms picked up Rafael Reyes, who'd gotten by Abdulla Mohammed 6-3 and Sean Sporleder
in the quarterfinals, shutout Sporleder in the semifinals, and defeated Sampson twice, both times 4-1, in the double elimination finals.
6-4 to reach him. It was Davis and Helms who advanced to the quarterfinals; Davis with a 6-4 victory over Carmona and Helms, 6-2 over Reyes. Davis and Helms locked up in a double hill, quarterfinal struggle that eventually advanced Helms into the semifinals versus Stottlemyer. Stottlemyer earned his re-match versus Shuff with a 6-2 semifinal victory over Helms that sent him (Stottlemyer) to the finals with an overall 45-20 record; 69% percent, compared to Shuff's record at that point, 48-29 for 62%. Shuff, though, completed his undefeated weekend with a second victory over Stottlemyer, 8-4, which left them both pretty much dead even in overall winning percentage (Shuff - 62.9%, Stottlemyer - 63.6%). In a Sunday, Second Chance Tournament, which drew 11 entrants, Nilbert Lim came back from the loss-side, winning five in a row to double dip hot seat occupant Chuck Sampson. Sampson had defeated Cheryl Sporleder to get into the hot seat. Lim, with three, loss-side wins behind him, defeated Shanna Lewis 4-1
Shanna Lewis was the recipient of a $100 prize as the top finishing female in the main event. Four women (Ann Reynolds, Daisy Blancaflor, and Cheryl Sporleder were the others) actually finished among the 16 players tied for 33rd place, but a random draw, four-person playoff resulted in Lewis' victory.
