As I drive up the 65 Freeway headed to Mother & Daughter Camp at Riverview Camp for Girls, I can't help but feel a bit sad. Don't get me wrong, of course I'm excited to be spending time at a place that is rich in tradition for my daughter and myself, but I'm sad too because she has now aged out of camp. After enjoying nine solid years, this part of her life comes to an end. We love Riverview and the family we have there. It's a tradition we have enjoyed and one both my daughter and I will treasure forever. This particular camp weekend, I found myself really wanting to take everything in, to enjoy all the activities with my daughter in slow motion. Freeze frame. Remembering back over all the times we did these very same activities and how she has gotten better and better at them. I have watched her grow in skills and become much better at shooting her targets in both archery and riflery. She nearly gets bullseyes with almost every shot! My shooting, however, has gone from great to not so good and I can only blame that on my changing eyesight and age at this point. She climbs the towers with lightning speed while I can't make it up the entire way anymore. She whizzes up the zip line trees with ease and even closes her eyes as she walks across a suspended tree 25 feet in the air, while I take my time and move just a bit slower, watching carefully with every step I take. She is soaring in her skill levels and I am trying to keep up! I think this must be what they call “passing the baton.” This time of nostalgia reminds me this is our last annual edition before summer starts and we move into another season, and before long, a new school year. I am also thinking about all our children and how many are graduating soon. Some are moving up from elementary to middle school, others from middle to high school, and then there are those who are graduating high school and moving onto college...and for many of us that means away
from us - the parents! How bittersweet is that? Yikes - I just want to push the pause button and hold it here...for a long, long while! I have finally reached a point in my life of savoring time. I am trying to hang onto the lasts and celebrate them. I don't want to look through a camera lens and record anymore; I want to be fully there, experiencing in whole, every step. It seems to me that time is so fleeting right now. I've always been a good 10 or so years older than the moms of my children’s ages. I look at those other moms and feel that many just don't realize how fleeting this time is with our children. How they do grow oh so fast as we have all heard from the moments of our babies’ births. It's hitting me hard this year as my daughter drives herself and her brother - and even me - places! I feel so blessed to have been given this time with my children. I look forward to many more years. I imagine them graduating high school, college and then off to get married and have their own children...my grandchildren!!! I am told the joys of grandchildren are something to really look forward to - NOT that I want to rush that forward in any way either. My point is, and you faithful readers have heard this before . . . We need to slow down, savor each moment, be in each moment and enjoy the moment we are in. Life is crazy, hectic, non-stop busy. And if we let it, it will bring us down and steal our joy. I don't want any of our children to look back and remember a stressed out mom. I want them to remember the joy, laughter and love! Mother Teresa once wrote, "Joy is prayer; joy is strength: joy is love; joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls." That is my prayer for you dear readers. Whether you are here, On The Coast, or elsewhere, may you have joy and may that joy be your strength and love!

Healthy Fuel
On The Fly by Paul Hunter
Summer is coming and for many that includes traveling either by car or plane. However you choose to travel, being away from home initiates a change in daily habits, even for the very disciplined and best intentioned. Sleep, activity and food are typically thrown out of rhythm. Often when we get away, we attempt to either sleep more or fit more of the activities intuit we yearn for when we are working or that we want to share with our children. Packing in all of these activities yields less sleep and focus on food time. For others, getting away means new sights, and new restaurants. Yes, you guessed it, more food in our bellies. More activity, more food and altered sleep in strange beds yields our daily rhythms out of whack. Planning is one way to overcome or at least minimize the damages of traveling. It may take thinking outside

the box or seeking the assistance of people who have been successful travelers to find success, but it is possible. Demise occurs when we throw all to the wind because we are already outside the normal patterns however, success does not equate to no fun or spontaneity. These challenges can be approached a couple different ways: Detailed planning or principle-based planning. The first involves accounting for every moment, activity and meal. If you have traveled with this way it can be an exhausting, event filled time. Necessary for some trips but not all. If there is a list of extremely high priority meetings, etc, this type of planning may be necessary. When applied to your vacation or other fun intend trip, the fun may go away. Attempting to eat in a detailed manner when away can be stressful and unintentionally chaotic because our daily conveniences are no longer convenient away from our homes. Continued on Page 10

Healthy Fuel On The Fly Continued from page 8
This is where “principle-based planning” comes in. I have found that principle-based planning allows for the most success with the least amount of intrusion into your trip whether it be for fun or business. Food is often the category that is lost in the schedule, even with the best planning. Eating by principle involves some discipline but affords a larger chance of success. Here are some basic eating/ “fueling” principles that can be used while on the road or in the air: Water: I recommend 1oz per kilogram (2.2lbs = 1 kilogram) of body weight. If you weigh 130 pounds that equates to about 60 ounces of water daily or almost 2 liters (67.6 ounces). Why water? Check out these facts: 1. Your body is about 60% water and can get depleted quite easily especially of we are engaging in activities outside our norm. 2. We lose about 8 to 10 cups, or just over two liters of water per normal day through breathing, urine, perspiration and bowel movements. 3. As little as 2% loss in water content begins to cause the brain to lose alertness and the body to feel fatigued. Why would you NOT drink water is a better question. Yes, you can have some snacks or even your favorite foods. However, just remember the farther you stray from these “principles” the harder your body has to work for energy and the father you may be from your goals you had prior to leaving. Sticking to these principles will allow you some freedom whilst traveling and still provide a foundation for proper fueling to have more fun on vacation and more success on business. Make it a Great Day! 10 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine
Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Nutrient dense and packed with vitamins and minerals, this group of fuel typically yields minimal calories and maximum nutrients. Try eating one big salad a day. Second best? Go frozen if you have a cooler or fridge/ freezer available. If you’re saying in a condo, a blender may be available and frozen berries are a great sweetener in smoothies.
Lean Meats: Heart doctors often tell their patients to focus on animal with 2 legs or less. Think… think… Yes, chicken and fish fit the bill here. Why? These sources are typically leaner (Read less fat, especially saturated) thus less calories and yield greater amount of protein per ounce.

Humility
A Healthy Dose of
by Crystal Tingle
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” ― C.S. Lewis
Humility.
What a quite misunderstood little word. Often perceived as a sign of weakness…don’t you get an image of someone walking around with a downtrodden face and a droopy head? When is the last time you heard, “Hang your head down low”? Never! We are culturally programmed to say just the opposite, “Hold your head up high,” right? But what if? What if instead we said the ridiculous? What if we said, “Hang your head down low” when we muster words of comfort to someone who has faced defeat or disappointment? 12 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine
This actually makes me chuckle every time I read it because in some way it reminds me of Debbie Downer from Saturday Night Live, “Wah wah wah.” Just saying it seems like an oxymoronic statement to a modern culture that is so geared towards selfpromotion, competitiveness and getting ahead. Or, let’s entertain the opposite. What about the person who experiences too much success? (Is there such a thing?) What if we didn’t sing their congratulatory praises but rather told them to “hang your head down low”? Huh? The look on their face would be priceless! What would people think if you said that to them regardless of whether they succeed or fail, win or lose! I chuckle again and can’t help but hear,”Wah wahhhh.” You know you just laughed as well. So where am I headed with this? First of all, don’t take me literally. I just thought it would be a funny thing to imagine. Seriously, let’s chat about humility. One of my favorite country singers has a new song about always staying humble and kind. And I would just bet that if you surveyed a dozen people around you and asked if they possessed those traits, most would say they do. I don’t doubt they are probably right to some degree, but character is always tested best and challenged when the pressure is on. And the truth is, we really are not geared with
a natural propensity toward humility. Not in today’s world where so much of who we are is measured and defined by what we have or look like or who we stepped on or over to get there. A virtue such as humility and kindness just doesn’t make the cut in the recipe for success. (Or does it? Hold that thought!) As a matter of fact, it seems quite the contrary. Rather, humility often conjures up thoughts of weakness or apathy. Corporate America seeks the young and determined with the “eye of the tiger.” And there is nothing wrong with that. But should more companies start hiring based on virtues such as humility as well? Humility is a very underestimated attribute in the success equation that actually comes with several emotional, mental, physical and social benefits. 17th century writer and artist John Ruskin summed up true success perfectly by saying,
The first test of a truly great man is his humility. By humility I don't mean doubt of his powers or hesitation in speaking his opinion, but merely an understanding of the relationship of what he can say and what he can do. Continued on Page 14

Humility
A Healthy Dose of
Continued from page 13
The person who truly walks in humility is 1. Self Confident
That’s right! True humility is NOT a sign of weakness. Instead, it is a sign of strength. It’s a healthy confidence paired with a proper perspective of what you can accomplish and where your limitations lie, and then letting others help to fill in the gaps without feeling threatened, allowing their gifting to come forth in unison with your own.
2. A Great Leader
Would it surprise you to learn that humility and kindness are actually character traits that make the best leaders and CEOs? Studies reveal that leaders with these virtues actually build highly successful organizations because there is an atmosphere of trust. The leader is seen as someone who is about the highest potential of the group as a whole and not just a self-serving agenda.
3. A Better Learner
Self-awareness that you don’t have all the answers promotes an excellent learning environment that opens up your mind to different ways or possibilities of doing things.
4. A Healthier Person
With a healthy dose of humility, the quest for an intangible greatness takes backseat to team effort. Importance and power become secondary to the humble when they learn to value themselves beyond an award or title. Stress and tension are eased which contribute to better rest and less anxiety.
5. More Socially Accepted
Humility fosters deeper and stronger relationships because the humble tend to be more considerate of others around them and also tend to be more generous givers. They are more outward-focused and aware of the needs of others rather than selffocused. 14 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine
I’ll be honest. I start squirming when I write these kinds of articles. They are meant to challenge, you as well as me. I write and then I reflect. As a wife, mother, and friend, I want to be spoken fondly of but not based on outward things. I want people who know me well and those I meet in passing to see me as someone who considers others. Someone approachable. Someone humble and kind. And again, we can all consider ourselves to have arrived but when we are tested, do we pass or fail? Humility is learned through our experiences and the vehicle for this is most often through our trials. It reveals our strengths as well as our limitations and highlights our need and dependency on others who surround us either at home or work.
“Hang your head down low”
was just my way of trying to be funny about our wrong perception of what true humility actually is, but it does serve as a good reminder in those situations that may test us. Will we fight to be right? Will we see others next to us in the race to the finish? Will we turn around to help out the next person when it’s within our power to do so? Without a doubt, humility is a discipline that requires the unnatural from us, in our successes as well as our disappointments. But wouldn’t you agree that it’s a worthy virtue to be exercised daily? And if you need a reminder, just think of this: ”Hang your head down low!”

New Activities to experience this summer by Danielle Torley
Imagine that you’re swimming underwater with dolphins, rays, manatees, and dozens of beautiful fish. Or perhaps you’re stand-up paddling (SUP) on top of the water, practicing yoga, and watching the sun set over the horizon. Or, you’re suspended in the air, gracefully hanging from two colorful silks. You could be competing in a triathlon race – swimming through clear turquoise waters, cycling along the beach, and running under the shade of palm trees. But perhaps you’d prefer speed and height, feeling the wind on your face as you maneuver your kite board across the ocean. Now stop imagining, because you can experience all these amazing activities right here On the Coast! 16 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine
It can be so easy to get caught up in our everyday lives and routines and forget how incredibly lucky we are to live in a place that offers so much. Each morning, our alarm goes off, we go through our daily routing, work all day, grab some dinner, head to bed, and do it all again the next day. If this sounds familiar, then it’s time to take advantage of the amazing activities offered right here On the Coast. Looking to slow down for a calming experience? Try SUP yoga. Need some more energy in your life? Head down to the Okaloosa Rugby Club or one of our local adult social leagues. Want to try something with your teens? Take a look at scuba diving or aerial silks. Can’t get a sitter but still want to get out of the house? Maybe stroller fitness classes are your answer. Read on for more information about our local offerings.
Aerial Silks. Have you ever marveled at the Cirque du Soleil aerialists gracefully climbing the silks? Then you’ll be excited to find out that we have aerial silk instructors and facilities here on the Emerald Coast! Instructors at the Destin Pilates Center utilize Pilates principles and work closely with beginners to develop upper body and core strength. Susan Dunnam, owner of Destin Pilates Center, says their instructors are fitness-based (not performance-based) and have worked with people from 4 to 85 years old, tailoring the stretches and poses to each person’s ability. Check out destinpilates.com for information on aerial silks and Pilates classes. Adult sports leagues. Ever reminisce about those
days on the playground playing kickball and dodgeball? Consider joining Emerald Coast Social Sports or checking out the league offerings from the City of Destin. Prefer volleyball? Then keep your eye on the 850 Elite Volleyball Academy for their adult leagues starting this summer!
Barre classes. A few words you’ll hear repeated most
often during a barre class: “tuck,” “pulse,” and “lift.” A barre class provides a low-impact, total-body workout that focuses on small isometric micro-movements of muscles. Set to fun, energizing music, classes utilize a ballet barre and light weights to target the whole body. Many people who consistently attend classes see results in the form of elongated muscles, strength, and flexibility. Ashley Singleton, owner of Pure Barre in Destin, says, “Pure Barre offers strength and definition like you’ve never known.” Want to try it out? Check out purebarre. com for more information.
Frisbee golf. What better way to get the family outdoors this summer? Frisbee golf is great for younger kids and adults, testing out coordination and Frisbee skills in a fun setting. Frisbee golf courses are available at Morgan Sports Center in Destin and the Ferry Park in Fort Walton Beach.
Kiteboarding. Maybe you’ve driven across Okaloosa
Island, seen the kite boarders maneuvering their kites across the bay, and absentmindedly thought that you should look into it at some point. Why not this summer? Our location provides the perfect opportunity for beginners. Both XL Kites in Fort Walton and LTD WaterSports in Destin offer introductory classes where people can experience kite boarding in 1-3 lesson sessions.
Rugby. Want something to shake up your standard games on the beach? Check out the Okaloosa Rugby Club! Although rugby is popular overseas and the fastest growing sport in America, it’s still a sport that many people in the USA know very little about. In simple terms, rugby is a combination of American football and soccer. Two teams play on a pitch, aiming to pass or kick a rugby ball into the opposing team’s end zone with a kick at goal for the extra points. The physical benefits from rugby are obvious – it’s fast-paced, with a lot of running and tackling involved. Interested? The Okaloosa Rugby Club plays both the 15-aside and 7-aside versions and are even hosting the inaugural Okaloosa Beach Rugby 7s tournament this summer! Contact Chris Mendonca, captain of the Rugby Club at okaloosarugby@gmail.com to learn more. Sailing. Living On the Coast, we all love spending time on the water. But imagine sailing across the bay, connecting with the water and wind, without the sound of a motor or engine propelling you. If this sounds like an experience you’d enjoy, then consider sailing lessons with Emerald Coast Sailing Association. They offer lessons for children, teens, and adults that take place in nearby bayous and the bay. Beginners need only to bring a life jacket, water shoes, and confidence in the water. Visit www. ecsasailing.com to learn more!

to experience this summer continued from page 17
Scuba diving. You know that the oceans offer a whole new underwater world, but if you haven’t taken the plunge yet, why not? This summer is the perfect opportunity to give scuba diving a try! Although scuba diving is not considered a strenuous activity, being in the water while concentrating on slow, deep breathing is a huge stress reliever for many divers. And contrary to popular belief, first-time diving is not a long-term commitment. Dive centers such as Emerald Coast Scuba offer Discover Scuba classes to teens and adults in either the pool or the open water. Need something for the little ones? They also offer a snorkel camp for 5-7 year olds and a PADI Seal Team course for 8-12 year olds. Check out their website at www.divedestin.net for additional information. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and SUP Yoga. Do
you enjoy paddle boarding? Interested in yoga? Or maybe you’re a yoga enthusiast who is new to paddle boarding? Look no further than 30A Paddleboard Yoga! Shanda Beste, owner of 30A Paddleboard Yoga uses a progressive teaching approach to educate people on the proper paddling techniques and use of stabilizer muscles that are essential for paddleboard yoga. She works closely with people to set them up for success, whether on the bay, ocean, or intercoastal dune lakes. Visit www.30apaddleboardyoga. com for additional information. Looking for some paddleboard action closer to Destin and Fort Walton Beach? Check out Paddle Tribe at www. paddletribecompany.com, a new addition to Lulu’s, providing paddleboarding and paddleboard yoga. Keep an eye on their website for new information on class times, tours, and special events!

Stroller fitness classes. Sometimes it’s tough to fit in a workout when you have small kiddos or babies at home. So, bring them with you to a StroLa Bliss fitness class! StroLa Bliss is a fitness group where women can bring their children in a jogger stroller while they get a great workout that includes cardio, Tabata, and circuit and strength training. It's for every fitness level and a great support system for moms (sisterhood in motherhood). Think this would be a good fit for you? Classes are Mon-Wed and Fridays at Morgan Sports Center. Join the StroLa Bliss group on Facebook or contact Rebekah Thomas at strolablissec@ gmail.com for class times. Triathlon. Are you a runner or cyclist looking for your
next challenge? The Emerald Coast offers triathlon races of varying distances from sprint to Ironman and even offroad XTERRA. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of training for a new challenge – Stephanie Woodard, a board member of the Emerald Coast Triathlon Club, says that beginners should find a local group to train with and not be afraid to ask questions. She notes that everyone was a beginner at one point, and that the Emerald Coast Triathlon Club has a great group of beginners and veterans who are excited to share their experiences with others. Learn more at ectriclub.org.
Waterskiing and Wakeboarding. Maybe you’ve lived in or visited a friend’s lake house, or spent time participating in watersports here on the bay. Chances are you’ve seen (or even tried!) to waterski or wakeboard. They can both be tough sports to master but did you know we have our very own state-of-the-art ski school? Pickos Waterski and Wakeboard School offers single, half-, and full-day lessons at the privately-owned facility with freshwater man-made lakes in Santa Rosa Beach. No Fear all star cheer A Parent’s Guide to Getting Started By Jen Floro
You may have seen cheerleaders on the sidelines at your favorite sporting events energizing the crowd and getting the stadium pumped, but there’s another side of cheerleading growing in popularity along the Emerald Coast that you may not know much about—All Star Cheerleading. All star cheerleading is a highly competitive and growing sport for boys and girls ages 4 and up that combines gymnastics-style tumbling, dance, jumps and stunting in a two-and-a-half-minute routine set to fast-paced energetic music. Kids compete against other teams based on their age and skill level. They do not cheer for other teams at games or lead crowds in chants, but rather they compete for the love of the sport.
“When my daughter, Skye joined all star cheerleading eight years ago, the thing that I liked most was each child plays an important role on the team that showcases their specific talents—no one sits on the sidelines,” Mandy Snyder said. “When you play softball, basketball or other sports, there’s usually a starting line-up and some kids may not play at all. Team placements for various gyms along the Emerald Coast for the 2016-17 year will happen in May. Locally, there are many options to choose from. Each offers various age and skill level options. Regardless of your child’s current skill level, every child makes a team. T h e local all star options include ACE Cheerleading Company (with 17 locations throughout the southeast including Ft. Walton Beach, Gulf Breeze, Panama City Beach, and Pensacola), AMPED Elite All Stars in Niceville, Beach Elite Cheerleading in Ft. Walton Beach, Cheer Intensity in Panama City Beach, Cheer Omega in Pensacola, Emerald City Gymnastics in Ft. Walton Beach, Flip Factory in Pensacola, Triple Threat Dance & Cheer in Crestview and World Class Athletics in Panama City Beach. With so many options available, parents and athletes should research gyms online and visit with the teams and coaches. Talk with the coaches and returning parents, observe a practice or take a class. With tryouts in May, many gyms will have open practices or options to interact with the coaches ahead of tryouts. For instance, ACE Cheer Company is allowing potential athletes to attend some of their team practices during the month of April at no charge. Beyond the banners and trophies you’ll see when visiting a gym, ask yourself: How long has the gym had an all star program? How have the teams and athletes progressed through the years? What team levels does the gym offer? How long have the coaches worked at the gym? Are the coaches certified and to what level are they certified? How do the coaches work with the athletes? Is the gym clean and well-maintained? How many athletes return to the program each year? What type of classes and clinics do they have to help your child advance outside of regular practice?
“I took an interest in cheer because my older sister did cheer for Bruner Middle School. She started to teach me how to tumble because I was captivated by every single move, twist and flip. I have cheered for two years now and it changes you. It teaches responsibility, time management and discipline. Cheer has taught me to honor victories and failures,” LaDarius Marshall said.
Marshall started his all star career at ACE Cheerleading Pride Warriors in Panama City Beach and now cheers for the ACE Cheerleading Wild Warriors in Jackson, Mississippi, a level 5 Worlds Championship team. Marshall recently threw a very complicated tumbling pass at Cheersport Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. His team hit a zero deduction, technically perfect routine at the competition. “I hit my most complicated pass at Cheersport this year-- a punch front, round off, full, half twist step out to kick double.” Teams practice year-round with a focus on new skills throughout the summer and competitive routines in late summer/fall. Teams then typically compete from November through April. Most competitions take place within a few hours of the gym, but may also take athletes to Dallas, Orlando or Las Vegas. Skill levels range from level 1 to 5 for athletes under 18 years old and are based on the athlete’s tumbling, stunting and jump sequence skills. Holly King, an elite level 5 athlete with ACE Cheerleading Company Pride Warriors in Panama City, likes that she and her teammates can do something most other people can’t do. “We practice as a family and win as a family.” The Pride Warriors will be representing our area in May at the Cheerleading Worlds, a bid-only competition regularly featured on ESPN. While athletes may move, competitions are a chance to reunite with old friends. continued on page 46

Tucked off of Highway 98, into the woods, and one block away from Choctawhatchee Bay lies the humble abode of the Ryland Pole Vault facility. Driving onto the compound through the shade of fruit trees of citrus, fig, and banana, past the organic garden plots of edible greens, roots, and vegetables set amidst pole vault pits and Florida sun-bleached asphalt runways, the athletes and parents arrive. Barefooted and wearing a straw hat, Daniel Ryland emerges from around the corner of the chicken coop to greet his guests. When arriving at the world-famous Ryland Pole Vault camp, it’s difficult to not be initially underwhelmed. It is not because the facilities are subpar; they are not. It is simply that people are not expecting a plain metal building without heat or air conditioning. Garage bay doors open, allowing for a sun-drenched elevated wooden runway topped with green outdoor carpet to extend into the driveway. It is an eclectic place run by a renascence man. It is here where Daniel, much like Albus Dumbledore of Harry Potter fame, turns athletes from lead into gold. Daniel churns out an amalgam of science and people skills to create the perfect alloy for the exact application. The physics of pole vault - mass, velocity, gravitational pull and height - are joined with the art of coaching the heart of the athlete. This is the recipe for magic that comes from Daniel. He oversees the journey and growth of each athlete. He is a master craftsman with the juxtaposition of organic farming, science, and the art of pole vaulting and coaching. This is his approach to sport. Daniel is a world-renowned pole vaulter and coach. He honed his coaching skills at the world famous Bell Athletic Camp in Arkansas and coached at the prestigious IMG Academy. He holds a personal pole vault record of 19’2.25” and his resume includes 11 National Championships; 2x Olympic Trials qualifier in pole vault; 2x Junior National Champion, Decathlon; Junior World Championship competitor in the Decathlon, Team USA; Pan American Championship competitor in the Decathlon, Team USA; and Louisiana State high school 100meter sprint, 110 hurdles, and Pole Vault Champion. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Arkansas State University. continued on page 26 Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine • 25

continued from page 25 However, people who know Daniel would say that he is first and foremost a family man. He is married to Catherine Ryland and they have a daughter named Scout. When asked about the unique combination of organic farming and pole vaulting, Daniel replies, “The greatest people I’ve ever known have been farmers and pole vaulters. So what better environment for me to raise Scout in? There is no better environment.” Beyond that he is a man of friendship and a man of community who believes in servant leadership, putting others first by pouring his life into others. He has managed the Seaside Market and volunteered his services in many capacities. Daniel has influenced thousands of vaulters both locally and from around the world. Kobe Babin of Destin Middle School is currently ranked the #1 middle school vaulter in Florida and 2nd in the nation in his age group. Journey Washingtonhigh from Liza Jackson Middle School is ranked 2nd in the state of Florida and tied at 7th in the nation. Other success stories include Georgia’s State Champion Alexa Johnson and
runner-up Kennedy Williams, both of whom are on pole vaulting scholarships. The Ryland Pole Vault camp is the place where young people from all over the world come to learn about how planting seeds, fertilizing, and developing solid root structure yield consistent fruit. The metaphor is obvious. Each discipline supports the other. Great plants don’t come about by accident - neither the organic nor the pole vault kind. Alexa Johnson was so committed to getting insight from Coach Ryland that she slept in a truck at a local primitive campsite and ate dinner from can by campfire light. People are willing to go to extreme measures to be there. It is not uncommon to hear vaulters talk about how they want to live at the camp during the summer and work for a place to stay in order to train and be immersed in that environment and culture of positive influence. Beginners to Olympic veterans have sought out Daniel for insight. Camp experience When the camp begins, Daniel takes his place on the catwalk observation deck. Barefooted and sporting a shaved head,
he observes intently as a young man in the 8th grade traverses the elevated runway from outside, transitioning into the shadow of the former diesel garage, planting the 13-ft. pole into a metal box, driving off of the ground into an inversion, and sailing over the cross bar set at 12 ft., landing softly into the padded pit. Daniel leans over and whispers, “Watch this! This kid is going to be great…the real deal!” Throughout the camp, classic rock, rap, country, and punk music can be heard wafting through the Ryland compound. Every day different students play their music over the sound system while they vault. Daniel seems unfazed and unaware of everything but each individual vaulter. He has the focus and concentration of an eagle perched to get its dinner from a nearby lake. He is purposeful and intent with each athlete and every vault. There are no wasted runs into the pit. Refrains of “how did that feel?” and “do you think you were under or out?” echo off the metal wall. He takes notes continuously to give specific feedback to each athlete. It is not uncommon for him to personally demonstrate the proper techniques. At times he will jump from his perch and land eight feet below into the landing zone of the pole vault pit. His brother, John Ryland, an incredible vault coach, comes alongside campers and does individual work to analyze and hone in on different aspects of vault. Daniel and John both are more than willing and able to grab a pole, run out to the elevated wooden runway, rock back onto the left heel, takes six strides, and erupt into an inverted position to demonstrate the move. Just as quickly as they swoop down they will ascend back to a perch, and practice continues. John’s assistance is an integral part of camp. A coach’s perspective of a Ryland Pole Vault experience “I had been sending my vaulting athletes to Daniel Ryland for a year before I ever got to experience it for myself as a coach,” says Coach Kurt Wheeler, Ed.D. “From the first people I ever sent to him, he was telling me that I needed to come and see what he did so that I would be fully aware of his techniques and camp experience. “He is very laid back, welcoming, and encouraging. He accepts the vaulter exactly as they are but cares too much to let them stay like they are. It is a baptism of full immersion into the vaulting culture. Like other sports, the language in pole vault is
different. Steps are not steps. Strides and steps are different. Expressions like out and under, roll it up, drive leg, trail leg, punch, etc. can take the novice by surprise. “Daniel’s approach is genius in that he has an ability to get off the written page of physics and geometry and performance and reach deeper into the athlete. He addresses what needs to be corrected, while at the same time he affirms what the vaulter does correctly. He is not teaching out of a book, nor does he force-feed the athletes ‘The Ryland Method.’ Oddly enough, I would describe his coaching techniques as organic and fluid. Daniel reaches a deeper and different place in the athlete, a place where he instills confidence and trust. The athlete in turn generates more ‘buy-in’ which leads to more confidence to stand into new disciplines and techniques. It is amazing what someone will do when they know that someone with Daniel’s vaulting pedigree believes and invests in them. I see Daniel more as a mentor to not only the athletes but coaches as well.” Finally Leadership guru John Maxwell writes that a great leader “knows the way, shows the way and goes the way.” Daniel is that type of leader. Santa Rosa, the pole vault community, the Florida panhandle, the southeast, the US and the world is a better place because of Daniel and his commitment to people and the sport. The Santa Rosa, Seaside, Sandestin, and Ft Walton communities must be proud. No a/c, no heat. bare bones, no frills. When it comes to facilities, what you see is what you get. And what you get is one of the best pole vault coaches in the sport and experiences of a lifetime. In an age of glitz and glamour, Daniel runs counter to current culture which is refreshing. So parents, if your athlete is looking to try a new sport or your pole vaulter needs to improve, give Daniel a call. The Ryland Pole Vault camp could be the place for them, where Daniel can take them from ground lead to gold soaring on wings like that of an eagle. www.rylandpolevault.com Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine • 27
R E A D I N G
It’s summertime once again – which means it’s time to keep up that reading and summer reading is so incredibly important. The American Library Association has stated that “Children who don't read over the summer experience summer learning loss. That's right -- kids don't just feel like they've forgotten some of what they've learned -- they actually do forget it.” While we want to stress the importance of summer reading to our kids, we also want to make it an enjoyable experience, not stressful. I have tried my best to include some books that are fun to read that hopefully your kids will find enjoyable. You may find them enjoyable as well, and what a better way to set an example for your kids by reading along with them? Most of these books are available in paperback so feel free to grab one and toss it in your beach bag! First is a book I believe you should place at the very top of your “must read” list. “I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives” by Martin Ganda and Caitlin Alifirenka is the true account of the amazing friendship that grew as a result of a simple school assignment. Two school students were randomly matched to be pen pals. One student was Caitlin, a typical American middle school girl, and the other was Martin, a 14 year old boy living in a Zimbabwean slum. Caitlin thinks nothing of the things she has available to her as a normal middle school kid in America. Martin has trouble even find enough money to pay for postage for a letter to Caitlin. Through their notes, which begin stiffly and grow into encouraging heartfelt letters, each of them learn about life outside their culture and the result is an eye opening book for every reader. Do not miss this one. I recommend it highly for everyone ages 12 and up. Second for this month is “Hattie Big Sky” by Kirby Larson. This story is a historical novel set in 1918 where the main character is Hattie, a 16 year old orphan who has spent her entire life being shuttled between relatives. When she unexpectedly inherits a homestead parcel in Montana, Hattie decides she has had enough of being dependent on others and decides to settle the homestead parcel on her own. In this harsh yet beautiful setting we see Hattie

not only persevere but begin to thrive into an amazing young woman. This book is based on the author’s family stories of her great grandmother homesteading by her herself in Montana. The result is a book you won’t wish to miss. The great thing is that if you like the story enough there is a sequel – “Hattie Ever After.” This book is suited for anyone ages and up.
Next I recommend another historical novel “The Boys Who Challenged Hitler: Knud Pedersen and the Churchill Club” by Phillip Hoose. The book is a true story that reads like an action novel. During WWII, the government of Denmark chose not resist German occupation. A band of middle school boys, led by Knud Pedersen, decide that this is shameful and begin a resistance movement that begins small and quickly gains ground. This book a great way to see another view of an often written about time in history and for the boys that really like war stories this one will be a favorite. I recommend this one for boys ages 12 and up. Now for the slightly younger set I recommend “Audacity Jones to the Rescue” also by Kirby Larson. Audacity Jones is an eleven year old who wants to shake up life at “Miss Maisie’s School for Wayward Girls.” Audacity is a smart and resourceful girl and she pretty much runs the place until a wealthy businessman shows up wishing to adopt an orphan. While it seems that this story is going to quickly turn into a Little Orphan Annie knock off, the story takes an adventurous twist and Audacity finds herself trying to foil a plan to abduct the president of the United States. This book is a lot of fun and your child will enjoy every page of it! This is planned to be a series so hopefully your child will enjoy it enough to look forward to the new releases. This book is targeted for ages 8 and up. I wish all of you a wonderful summer. Wear sunscreen and read! As always, any recommendations or comments can be forwarded to kidzonthecoast@aol.com. Happy reading!

Emerald Coast Mudrun For Orphans, May 21st Would you get muddy to do good? Let me explain. The Emerald Coast MudRun For Orphans is May 21st, and it’s a 5K Fun Run (yes it includes mud) that benefits orphans around the world. This is the fifth year that Heart of the Bride Ministries (HOB) has put on the event. HOB is a Niceville, Florida-based 501c3 founded in 1997, through one family’s desire to directly participate in caring for the helpless and poor in the greatest places of need around the world. We realized that we wanted to offer people the opportunity to do good in a fun and different kind of way. We came up with the idea to offer a “MudRun”. We started five years ago with this idea and boy did it take off. Our first year we had around 1,700 mudrunners. Our second year we grew to around 3,700 and last year we had close to 4,300 mudrunners. Last year we were able to raise just over $100,000.00 for orphan care. That’s right, a one with six zeros behind. WOW!
So now I’ll ask you the question again, would you get muddy to do good? Race day is May 21st. and the event is held in Niceville at the North West State College campus. This is a family event. We have several 5K Fun Runs throughout the day. We even have a 10K and 5K competitive in the morning to you competitors out there. For the rest of us we will enjoy the fun runs where you run at your own pace and the obstacles are optional. Did I mention we will have a “Kids Zone” for your children and we offer 1 Mile Kids Fun Runs. I told you we had something for the whole family. Ok, so come on challenge yourself and challenge a friend and register for the Emerald Coast Mudrun For Orphans. Use coupon code ”ONTHECOAST” and SAVE 10% off of registration. You can register at www.emeraldcoastmudrun.com
7th Annual Little Black Dress Party There is no doubt that a little black dress never goes out of style and is always something to celebrate. For the 7th year, women across the Emerald Coast will be slipping into their LBD to support women’s health in our community. The Sandestin Linkside Center will be transformed as guests enjoy an elegant Night at the Opera. The evening will feature dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, games and live performances. All proceeds will support the White-Wilson Community Foundation’s women’s health initiative. The nonprofit works to raise awareness about the importance of preventive care and increase access to life-saving health services. all star cheer continued from page 22
“I love traveling to competitions so I can cheer on my old friends and see how much they have improved. At Amped, we work together as a team to get our stunts up. Teamwork and friendships are so important to me and my team,” Maddie Roberts, an Amped Elite All Stars Krewe of Ruckus athlete, said.
Alyssa Patton agrees with Roberts. Patton is a Junior Surge athlete with Beach Elite Cheerleading. She loves the excitement of getting on stage with all her friends and performing. Many gyms also offer classes and clinics year-round. The classes can help athletes develop new skills and prepare for school and all star tryouts.
Coach Terry Weeks, a 20-year veteran coach from U.S. Gold Gymnastics and Cheerleading in Destin and Crestview, says, "I really enjoy seeing the kids progress from toddlers in our gymnastic classes into National Champions from our local high school cheerleading programs! We have been fortunate enough to train NCAA cheerleaders from FSU, Alabama, Troy and my favorite - the University of Florida. Go Gators!" As a traveling sport, all star cheer involves a significant commitment. When considering joining a team, ask about the costs. Typically, there’s tuition, competition fees, uniforms, practice gear and other fees. Ask about scholarships, sibling discounts, male athlete discounts and referral discounts to make the sport more affordable. While it is an investment like most travel sports are, many parents appreciate the role cheerleading has in improving other areas of their kids’ lives. Emerald City Gymnastics has both a competitive and a performance cheerleading team. This year they competed as a level 2 Junior squad. The all star squad, the Jewels, competed in 3 local competitive events and against numerous regional teams.

“The Jewels are charismatic, hardworking and love the challenge of their workouts. This year’s team traveled to Mobile for the first time to compete at the WSA Mobile and will compete in 2 more events, the Athletic Grand Championships and the Beach Nationals,” owner Jean Lowery said. During their yearlong commitment, the Emerald City Jewels also enjoy performing in local parades and at events. Most teams wrap up their seasons mid-April; however, some win regional competitions earlier in the year that have earned them bids to finals competitions. These finals give teams an opportunity to compete against other awardwinning top-tier programs. For instance, the Golden Arrows from ACE Cheer Company in Ft. Walton Beach, a Youth level 1 team, received fully-paid bids to both the U.S. Finals and The One Finals this season. “I like the camaraderie and teamwork that my kids’ teams exhibit,” says Nate Burks, cheer dad of two. “I’ve seen my son’s agility and flexibility improve greatly in cheer which has helped him be a better football and baseball player. They’ve both learned valuable leadership skills that have helped in other areas of their lives.”

Since 1997, the Florida Lottery has been creating a brighter future for Florida through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program. Through this scholarship, more than 725,000 students have earned the opportunity to attend a Florida college. The education they have received is allowing them to give back to the community and boost Florida’s economy, while helping to fund the next generation of Florida’s students. So remember, the more you play, the more Florida wins.
