As the 2010 Mini Sale at Redmarley was very well received, and the bulls on offer all sold, Gordon and Vicki Mundell will once again be holding their Mini Sale or open days on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd September 2011. These open days will coincide with the other Condamine Shorthorn Stud Sales. This year has been different from the previous drought years and the floods, which did no damage to the house but took a great toll on the fences, has left Redmarley covered in feed. The Lagoon was filled for the first time since 1998. The 2 year old bulls up for offer this year, have all been paddock prepared and have been grazing on the oats for some time.

The Sires of the cattle up for sale are Tipperary Zazu, Hazelgrove Bon Scot, Conomandine Warchief and a small number by Clargo Stockbroker. All the cattle are penned for easy inspection and Gordon will be on hand, to discuss any information, regarding the bulls and the selected females offered for sale. Balonne Beef Breeding Bulls Prove Popular The Balonne Invitation Bull Sale has developed a formidable reputation for delivering a dynamic draft of bulls that meet the demands of commercial cattlemen. Now in its fourth year the Balonne Invitation Bull Sale at "Myall Plains", Nindigully, 11am Monday 12th September will showcase 155 quality Angus, Senegus, Santa Gertrudis and Charolais from seven vendors. Grant Daniel Long Stud stock agent, Bill Till, said the Balonne Shire's only bull sale is seeing a big percentage of repeat buyers driving big miles. Cattlemen know the trip to Nindigully is very worthwhile as they will see a consistent line of very buyable bulls. Previously the buyers have come from as far as Ivanhoe, Collarenebri and Moree in New South Wales and from Hughenden, Thargomindah, Springsure and Blackall in Queensland. The multi-vendor Balonne Invitation Bull sale gives beef producers a wide range of genetics in large numbers, on the one day, at the one sale. Mr Till added "the secret to the sale's success is that vendors have to be invited to participate. We've sought out vendors who are committed to the success of the sale and selected the best bulls from these highly regarded stud breeders. The continued and improving consistency of the line-up has built trust and confidence with the buyers." Vendors this year include Darren Hegarty Carabar Angus Stud Meandarra, Lawsons Angus Stud Toobeah, Lindsey and Belinda Hindle LVH Fairfield Charolais Stud Roma, Ivan and Helen Price Moongool Charolais Stud Yuleba, Craig Hindle Bullamakinka Santa

Gertrudis Stud Bungunya, The Russell family Swan Hill Santa Gertrudis Stud Blackall and Jason Goodland Wightfields Santa Gertrudis Stud Chinchilla. Selling agents GDL and Elders advise all the bulls are backed by full performance figures and offer fertility, mobility and value for money.

Lawsons Angus Lawsons Angus will be offering 25 Angus and 5 Senegus (Senepol Angus cross) bulls. Bulls are again by some of the leading sires in the breed including Lawsons Dinky Di Z191, Lawsons Tank X1235, GAR Predestined, TC Total, Lawsons Payload X951, GAR Ultimate and SS Objective just to name a few. These bulls offer great calving ease with tremendous growth. All bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1, Vibrio and 3 day vaccine and come vet checked. Swan Hill Santa Gertrudis

LVH Fairfield Charolais

Swan Hill Santa Gertrudis Stud has put together a draft of 13 Santa Gertrudis bulls. They have a quiet temperament and will be approximately 24mths old at the sale. The bulls selected for the sale are easy doing and have a light tropical coat. They are suited to buyers looking for quality and value for money for their herd. This is the third time Swan Hill has offered bulls at the sale and have been met with strong demand and repeat buyers at the previous sales.

LVH Fairfield Charolais will be returning to Nindigully with over 30 quality Charolais bulls this year. Fairfield has invested heavily into new genetics and therefore presenting the best quality line of bulls so far, with many bulls having overseas bloodlines and most with very low birth weights and a high percentage of polled bulls. A huge emphasis is placed on temperament of cattle bred on Fairfield with detail placed on the importance to fatten and finish. Anybody purchasing a Fairfield bull can feel confident as they come with a full guarantee.

Wightfields Santa Gertrudis Wightfields Santa Gertrudis Wightfields Stud will offer 10 bulls, 6 of these are poll or poll scur. With the better season this year all bulls will have had 15

Bullamakinka Santa Gertrudis Bullamakinka Santa Gertrudis The Hindle family's Bullamakinka stud

is represented this year with 19 select classified "S" and 7 classifier approved commercial bulls that are rising two year old. They are sired mostly by the studs top sires including Warenda Random, Warenda Sentry(P), Rosevale Quilpie Z292, Strathmore Z218, Kelly Wallah Z100(P) and Warenda Sleuth(P). In addition we are offering four top quality poll bulls by two of our AI sires, Warenda Sherlock(P) and Rosevale Battalion(P). These sale bulls have had a good preparation coming off a good early crop of oats with limited supplementation. All bulls have been fully vet checked and ready for work. In 2009 the Bullamakinka Stud purchased a magnificent sire in Canowindra Gold Edition for $28000. At 29 months Gold Edition weighed 1110 kgs and is a very high content tropical bull. With his growth and bone, bos indicus type and softness, Gold Edition is typical of the Santa cattle we aim to breed. His calves have impressed us and we look forward to presenting his bulls for sale next year. Visit our website, www.bullamakinka.com.au for our sale lots and early August open day.

Moongool Charolais Moongool Charolais Stud principals Ivan and Helen Price said "the Moongool bulls all carry moderate frame, plenty of muscle and have good fat coverage. They really are delivering a complete package to the commercial producer". "All Moongool bulls carry a full guarantee, so a buyer can be confident in investing in a Moongool bull", added Ivan.

25 years ~ from Australia to the World For the past 25 years the name Chadwick Downs is synonymous with Braford Cattle. However, Chadwick Downs has been one of Australia's most significant exporters of cattle genetics for 15 years. Supplying the ever increasing demand for this truly Australian breed around the world with Braford genetics. Brafords are a real Australian success story; bred to withstand the harshest seasons while remaining fertile and functional. Now backed by feed efficiency data and meat quality awards, the modern Braford has a lot to be proud of. It's these very qualities of fertility, efficiency and functionality combined with the added benefit of proven eating quality and market acceptance, that have seen Brafords become one of the world's fastest growing breeds. Stephen, Elaine and Martin Lill of Chadwick Downs have been breeding Brafords for a quarter of a century and have grown to love the breed that not only does well in the rugged, mountainous and often harsh climate of the Warrumbungle mountain ranges at Coonabarabran, NSW but are proud of the breed that has put them on the global map. ‘We breed Brafords for their outstanding adaptability, fertility and resilience under any season' said Stephen Lill, Principal of Chadwick Downs. “This ability to rear a great calf in the toughest of seasons continues to impress us and it's reflected in the global popularity of the breed.' To date Chadwick Downs have sold semen to five continents around the world, with the countries of South America importing the majority. “Australia represents something very attractive to countries like Argentina,

Paraguay and Brazil' Stephen said. “Australian cattle producers have bred animals with constitution, fertility and longevity built right into the product and that's something that many other cattle producing countries around the world have left by the wayside. The type of livestock we select for are the ones that do well on our properties and for our repeat clients.” Chadwick Downs have chosen a draft of eight selected Braford bulls to represent the herd at the National Braford Sale September 12 in Rockhampton. “The bulls we are offering are a very modern take on the traditional Braford, Stephen said. “We've added extra performance without increasing mature size. We've improved the carcase of the bulls while maintaining calving ease and most importantly, all bulls are semen tested and come backed by a fertile breeder herd with proven efficiency and confirmed by over 100,000 cows around the world”. In addition to the popular Braford herd, Chadwick Downs is home to a relatively new but increasingly successful Brangus Stud. ‘We began to breed Brangus in response to Australian and International demand. “Brangus are one of the world's most successful breeds and their popularity has just taken off here in Australia.”

“Being polled and having the ability to inject a bit more carcass and having a big hit of fertility without shaking up the consistency of the breeding herd too much are Brangus strong points.” Chadwick Downs is predominantly breeding Red Brangus and although the stud is now a decade old, Chadwick Downs has Champion Awards at Rockhampton's BEEF 2009 and at the EKKA in 2008 and 2010. Red Brangus were chosen for their ability to fit right in to existing breeding programs in our immediate area but also in herds across central and northern Australia.

Chadwick Downs is offering 14 top quality Red Brangus bulls at the Red Brangus Classic Sale September 27 at the CQLX Gracemere. As with all Chadwick Downs bulls offered for auction, the sale bulls will be health checked, semen tested, fully vaccinated and guaranteed. They also come backed by a cow herd raised under real world conditions. Angus Bulls That Work! Bulls that work is our belief and we focus on function, fertility, calving ease, growth and carcase performance. We are a cows that calve every year program and we like to meet a range of requirements from heifer bulls to terminal sires and all areas in between. Our bulls are prepared to a joining weight, not a finishing weight, on Leucaena pastures and oats to ensure their longevity and quick adaptations to their new environments. Sandon Glenoch Angus was established in 1971 and last breeding season we joined just over 500 cows. We measure all traits and we have been performance recording since 1986. On Wednesday 17th August, 82 bulls will go under the hammer for our 20th annual on-property sale. These 82 bulls will meet a range of requirements that are backed by our three year breeding soundness guarantee. They are structurally assessed as well as semen and morphology tested. The bulls have been vaccinated for 3 Day, Vibrio, 5 in 1, and Lepto. They've also all been blooded for tick fever and have been ear notch tested negative for pesti-virus. In addition to supplying the bulls' full

pedigree and EBV information in the sale catalogue, we also provide data on every bull's dam including the number of calves she has had and her average calving interval. Presentation of this data objectively proves breeder fertility and functionality. This year the genetics of our bulls are little more diverse with a number of new sires being used. This will be an added advantage for past clients looking for something new while still under a breeding philosophy such as ours. A breeding philosophy that keeps to a tight calving period, places pressure on female function and maintains a multitrait focus to ensure progeny have the right balance. A breeding philosophy that allows form to follow function to produce growth, carcase performance and phenotype. Brangus — Building on the basics

11

This November marks the 50th anniversary of the Australian Brangus Cattle Association as a breed society. From humble beginnings the Brangus breed has forged ahead to be a leading breed in the Australian industry with excellent growth in the last decade. The success of the Brangus breed has largely been due to the dedication of breeders to breed adaptable cattle that can meet market specifications. Many of the traits that Brangus breeders take for granted are qualities that commercial breeders aspire to have throughout their herd. Brangus offers the poll gene into commercial herds with the known benefits of no dehorning stress on calves and operators. With labour on properties becoming more expensive reducing the workload makes economic sense. Add to this no weight loss due to stress and the benefits can quickly add up. Commercial breeders that have Brangus females in their herd report on their strong maternal instinct and ability to raise heavy calves. Equally as impressive as the maternal base to a herd or injected through sire purchases Brangus genetics offer producers versatility in their marketing options. Brangus dams in the right country will turn off heavy vealers or weaners that will grow on and finish either on grain or grass. The highly regarded Toogoolawah Prime Cattle Show recently proved the ability of the Brangus breed to meet specifications. The judging resulted in Brangus cattle winning the Champion Pasture Fed Female Exhibit, Champion Pasture Fed Steer or Bullock, and Champion Pen of Grain Fed Steers or Bullocks. The Champion Pasture Fed Steer or Bullock was the winner of the Single steer class, showing no permanent teeth. The Brangus/Brahman cross steer weighed in at 642kg at 23 months. The Champion Pen of Grain Fed Steers or Bullocks was the winner of the Pen of three steers or bullocks bred and owned by the Exhibitor and showing no more

than two permanent teeth. The pen had an average weight of 612kg, milk teeth and an average age of 21 months. In reality the Brangus breed combines efficiently two of the largest gene pools in the world Brahman and Angus. Selecting for the benefits of both breeds has produced a breed that can endure and conquer the harshest environment and still produce a keenly sought after marketable product. Brangus breeders could be considered ahead of their time. Recently CSIRO reported a world first; researchers had inseminated 30 young Brahman bulls with stem cells from the testicles of European Angus bulls, so the Brahmans will deliver Angus sperm. It's hoped they'll eventually father a hybrid species

combining the Brahman's heat tolerance with the valuable marbled flesh of the Angus. Brangus breeders have been achieving this for fifty years without the need for technical intervention. The 6th Brangus World Congress to be hosted by Australia during the Beef Australia 2012 in Rockhampton will highlight the quality of the Brangus breed A Red Brangus and all cattle breeders are invited to female showing a very inspect the display at Beef 2012. Australia desirable poll head, a breeders are justifiably proud of their product benefit of breeding and are planning to showcase the breed to both with Brangus. local and international visitors. Before then commercial breeders can select sires with confidence at either of the Brangus Association sales, member on farm sales or privately from the paddock. The Association sales are based at Roma (2nd September) and Rockhampton (10th & 11th October). Bulls at these events are inspected for type and quality. Commercial breeders can find more information on the Brangus breed on our recently updated website www.brangus.com.au or by contacting the Brangus office 02 6773 3373. A list of Brangus sales is regularly updated on the site with contact details. Australian Brangus is now a member of the World Brangus Federation (FIBRA) and is the next host of the World Brangus Congress. This event will be held in conjunction with Beef Australia 2012 and is promising to be an excellent opportunity to showcase the Brangus breed. Hardigreen Park Stud is once again preparing to send a quality team for the forthcoming Brisbane Royal. The operation is already beginning preparations to make 2012 a memorable one as it is the 40th anniversary of the stud, being registered in February 1972. Through careful development and selection, Moreton Rolfe and his stud manager, Colin Patterson have developed the operation to a stage where the nucleus of classified females are now in excess of 200. The high profile seedstock operation also supports a commercial operation run at Hardigreen Park, Wallabadah and Santa Vale, Woolomin, New South Wales. Midas heads back to Toowoomba Midas once again will field a strong team at the annual Gelbvieh sale in Toowoomba this year. We will have 13 good quality bulls on show this year with different genetics to satisfy the stud breeder. For the first time bulls sired by the great Midas Collosus will be on sale with Midas E039 and E029 being 2 outstanding sons. Other sires represented for the first time are Magnus Lexus and Norolle Backbencher. An ET bull by Canadian sire PLD Resource should create some interest as he is a complete outcross from other genetics in Australia. Our five females presented has a mix of genetics with both open heifers and pregnancy tested in calf heifers due to calve this spring. I hope to see the cattlemen who believe in quality cattle at the sale.

BULLS FOR THE BUSH FOR SALE

E03 ELDER D.O.B 30/8/08

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, It has come to my attention that commercial cattleman need a TAROELA BRAFORD BULL. In my travels I have noticed at many fat and store sales from northwest Queensland, down to southern NSW, there has been a premium paid for Braford and Braford infused cattle. Their ability to handle the extremes of cold , wet winters through to hot dry summers and still thrive, make Brafords an alternative for cattle people wanting to have a SURÂżWDEOH SURGXFWLYH EHHI HQ-

terprise. The great mothering ability, ease of calving, ability to meet markets whether for the vealer market through to bullocks, and the resale value of the cull cow, or the extra weight , feed conversion, earlier turnoff to market from a Taroela Braford bull would be EHQHÂżFLDO WR FURVVEUHHGLQJ RU a pure Braford herd. This year, Taroela Brafords decided to support the Watkins and Co Braford infused store sale at Roma with a line of heavy feeder steers. Their top pen of steers sold for 208.2c/kg to return $1012 and their line of 115 steers

WEATHER REPORT 2011 has been a fantastic summer following on from the record breaking rain of 2010 on Redbank. 1260 mm fell in 2010 (just RYHU LQFKHV DQG WKH ÂżUVW PRQWKV RI KDV VHHQ PP hit the ground. Most of the access roads are now open, however some internal roads are still impassable.

averaged a tad over $950. In the female section, 405 kg replacement heifers sold to 204c/kg. Commission buyers at the day reported that a 5-10 cent premium was paid for a well presented line of Braford cattle. Just another reason to buy Taroela bulls. At the National Braford Bull sale at Gracemere saleyards on September the 12th of this year, TAROELA have nominated 16 bulls. They will comprise a line of rising 2 year old bulls and a line of 30-36 months old bulls. Polled and scurred bulls by Taroela Tallon and Ascot Ark dominate their draft of bulls. At the beginning of June , Taroela’s senior sire “TALLONâ€? passed away. He has KDG D ELJ LQĂ€XHQFH RQ WKH VWXG herd running at Taroom over the last decade. Taroela stud is run on 2 properties, “Taroelaâ€? at Taroom and “Redbankâ€? at Mitchell. It is a commercial based operation running 2000 breeders at Redbank and then they grow the steers out at Taroela, normally for the meat trade. I strongly suggest that your readers should seriously consider looking at putting a Taroela bull into their herds this year. Yours Wazza

Stus Sales - 2012 - February 23 Banquet Bull Sale

Banquet cattle positively different ‘Angus bulls with a positive difference' could well be the catchcry of Stephen and Noeleen Branson's Banquet herd, based in south western Victoria. Since foundation the Bransons have aimed to produce a high growth Angus herd that is both objectively and subjectively different from most Angus cattle. They are extremely docile as a non-negotiable starting point, but it is their extra frame size and, with balance they are longer. This alone is not necessarily an asset, but when combined with Banquet's stronger bone and wonderful muscling, the end result is a line that has thickness and constitution added to that extra length. Thus, it is not hard to imagine why these cattle are so successful and popular. "As seedstock breeders we are producing cattle that put extra dollars in the pockets of our clients," Stephen Branson said. "We find these types not only have the growth and muscling being sought by proces-

sors, feedlotters and backgrounders, but also cattle breeders in all environs. They also give greater flexibility of market options. We witness this first hand through our southern markets where clients are topping both steer and heifer weaner markets through to heavy weight steers. That gives us great satisfaction and confidence we are on the breeding track," Stephen said. The Bransons have been attracting increasing numbers of Queensland clients over the last 5 years, as astute Queenslanders have researched their qualities and found they are also ideal for crossing over the dominant Bos Indicus cattle, increasing growth rates and carcase quality in the progeny. To cater for Queensland market growth, the Bransons are offering 10 typical big, bold

Banquet Angus bulls in the GDL Longreach sale to be held on 28th October. Stay tuned for more details on this offering. The Bransons have established their successful breeding philosophy around top genetic cow breeding families within their herd, producing consistent high quality and bulls with repeatability of their strengths. "The 600 day growth and mature cow EBVs in our cattle are very similar which is the strongest objective indicator of good young cattle that have the genetic capacity to keep growing rapidly and laying down muscle right through their development", Stephen Branson said. Banquet has produced many standout bulls for the beef industry, but one of their newest sensations is the pre-potent Banquet

Ballis. This outstanding sire had 51 sons in this year's annual Banquet bull sale at Mortlake in February that averaged $9382, 22% above the sale average. The good news is there will be another 50 in their next annual bull sale offering and probably some in the October Longreach offering. For those Queenslanders who want to explore options beyond the limited Longreach offering, Banquet has private sale bulls becoming available all year round, or you can attend their next 150 annual bull offering at Mortlake on Thursday February 23rd 2012.

Hazeldean offers proven genetic performance

Cattle producers seeking high reproductive performance and increased prices for their stock in a total package of sound structured animals would be wise to inspect the Hazeldean Angus Northern Performance sale team for 2011. Hazeldeans high performance herd is built on a long history of breeding cows with sound structure, docile temperament and natural doing ability. Feedlotters consistently recognize steers from clients with Hazeldean Angus bloodlines by paying premiums for lines of these steers. Hazeldeans goal is to produce animals that will turn grass into dollars and reap the highest returns for their clients; a highly fertile herd producing heavy carcases that command a price per kg premium due to superior eating quality. Jim Litchfield stressed that all sale bulls are unconditionally guaranteed for 12 months under the Hazeldean guarantee. "We realize that there is a significant investment in time and money when

order to make money in the beef industry. "Getting a live calf on the ground out of every cow in your herd is the essential starting point for a profitable business. A dead calf costs money." says Jim . Having a herd with exceptional fertility lower than average birth weights, excellent calving ease teamed with high growth is the focus of Hazeldean . Hazeldean's average EBV's for the herd exemplify these attributes, they are also above breed average for 600 day weight , fertility EBV's and for all carcase traits. Hazeldean Angus is renowned for it's easy handling cattle with excellent temperament "Temperament is highly heritable; it affects

Hazeldean Angus 2 year old Sale Bulls. purchasing bulls and the worst thing for a long term business is to have a client dissatisfied with his acquisition. So we ensure only the soundest bulls are put up for sale and have them all independently structurally assessed. However in addition to this we cover our bulls unconditionally for 12 months" In addition to Angus bulls Hazeldean also has some exciting Senegus bulls on offer. Senegus are a cross between Senepol, the tropically adapted Bos Taurus from the Caribbean, and Angus. The Senepol has a slick coat that gives the breed heat tolerance and parasite resistance and Senegus will retain all of this advantage provided the slick coat is inherited. Senegus cattle offer an exciting option for cattle producers looking to maintain heat and parasite tolerance while producing beef that gains a premium in the market due to lower Bos Indicus content. Hazeldean 's core business is providing functional, profitable bulls to the commercial beef industry and this means first of all maximising the number of live calves hitting the ground, building onto that base rapid growth rates and on top of that superior carcase data. It has to be in that

carcase quality, growth rates, and handling - any animal that shows bad temperament is culled." Says Jim. The breeding program continues full steam ahead and Hazeldean is particularly excited about the recent purchase of top performing sire Te Mania Berkley, for a record $65,000. Berkley has exceptional performance data from a moderate birthweight EBV of +4.7 he follows through to explosive growth EBv's that reach +103 at 400 days and +126 at 600 days and carcase data that puts his Long Fed CAAB index at +$153 Importantly with all this his fertility and calving ease EBV's are equally outstanding. He also has a very quiet temperament and super sound structure - his first calves at Hazeldean are very impressive. He fits in perfectly with Hazeldean's breeding goals. Hazeldean has undertaken extensive AI programmes with sons and grandsons of Sitz New Design 458N, Leachman Boomtime, LT Bando 9074 plus sons of Hazeldean bred sires featuring in the impressive 2011 line-up.. Sale bulls are available for pre-sale inspection any time by appointment.

Two keys to breeding success At the end of the day it all comes back to profit, and at Elite Poll Herefords, the objective is to produce sale bulls with the genetics to increase profits and ease the workload for our clients. As stud principal, Kay Payne explains, her breeding program places emphasis on two key areas to achieve this objective, namely, genetic calving ease and top carcase attributes. “By increasing calving ease, there are more calves to sell, more dams that go back into calf and less time and labour needed for supervision, so ultimately more profits for clients", Mrs. Payne said. “It is very important to realize that our successful selection for easily born progeny comes from breeding genetic ability to calve into our females. It doesn't mean light calves with no growth potential. Our heifers can deliver

40+kg calves that have been bred to be in the top 10% of the breed for subsequent growth. “So, our heifer's calves are our genetically superior, and most valued replacements and, of course, our sale bulls carry the calving ease genetics.” At Elite Poll Herefords, the herd is run as a commercial operation with selection aided by EBVs. Selling to a range of markets including both domestic and export, MSA and the EU, has ensured Elite bulls are selected to produce top progeny for these specific markets. “Demand for cattle that will meet the MSA market is increasing, so our sale bulls with good growth and higher IMF will produce progeny with high compliance rates for that profitable outlet.” “Our cattle are noted for their quiet temperament, which

greatly assists in the ease of general management and contributes to better meat quality and grid compliance", Kay explained. In the past two years nine steers have been prepared and have averaged a creditable 85 points, including silver and bronze medal awards, which demonstrates the stud's consistency and success in herd selection. Elite Poll Herefords have been donating steers to local students to prepare for carcase competitions for a number of years. This year, 35 bulls, most with Market $Indeces in the top 20%, or better, of the breed will be offered at the stud's on-property sale to be held on 1st September. Further details can be obtained by contacting Kay Payne on 02 6545 8135 or via email at elitepollherefords@bigpond.com

Offering 87 Beefy sires from a range of studs The 2011 annual Glen Innes Hereford bull sale sees 87 Big Beefy Sires catalogued for competition from a variety of studs throughout the region. The quality line up of bulls will all be Vet inspected and semen tested, ready to go out to perform in the cow herds across the region. The change in seasons has brought with it a resurgence of interest and support to the beef industry and the Hereford breed is now poised to again be the leader in producing the ideal beef product for the market place. Herefords are renown for their wonderful temperaments which leads to a more easy doing beef producing unit and this intern leads to a higher conversion of feed to beef and faster turn- around from paddock to plate, which makes for a better bottom line for the producer. The uptake of MSA also provides extra opportunities to increase returns from the beef processors along with Herefords being

ideal for the lucrative EU markets. At the 2011 Royal Easter show a team of Poll Hereford steers were half a point from winning the prestigious Stan Hill Trophy for overall hoof and hook carcase excellence which really does demonstrate the capabilities of the Hereford breed as an outstanding meat machine. While most studs are able to embrace Breedplan all bulls will be scanned for carcase attributes the day before the sale with this information readily available on supplementary sheets, for day of sale selective comparisons. The annual Glen Innes bull sale has always been a discerning place for stud producers to snap up a relatively cheap new stud sire and 2011 will be no different with a number of studs offering their top lines of bulls for competition. The 2011 judging team of Rory and Peter Murphy of the famed Monreid Hereford and Simmental studs have enjoyed

many successes over the years at Glen Innes breeding many bulls that have made significant contributions to the successes for this breed and their comments will be well received. An interesting statistic to consider from the average price of last years' sale bulls is $3563, joined to 50 cow's means that investment generated a calf for $71, and that's just the first year of service from that investment.2011 sees the introduction of heifers to the sale with 10 registered heifers catalogued for competition. Some of these heifers will already have participated in the Northern regions Junior Heifer Show, for and run by the regional youth group at the Inverell Showground during the midyear school holidays. The sale has again attracted huge support from local businesses in the form of sponsorship to help defray costs for which the vendors are eternally grateful and follow through with support of those businesses.

Vendors who displayed bulls as part of Northern Beef Week at the Glen Innes saleyards include Angus, Eunice and Will Vivers from Jindalee, Grant Kneipp from Battalion, Roger Kneipp from Dundee Echo Park, Greg Scurr from Tahlan and seated Lachlan Scurr from Lachdale and Geoff hayes from Damona.

Hereford Prime will again support the sale with a carton of mouth wateringly juicy beef to the purchaser of the most lots.

Lawsons & Burenda Angus third annual Roma bull sale Ninety Angus Bulls Sell Wednesday 12th October 2011 at 11am. Burenda Angus joins again this year with Lawsons Angus to present 90 plus Angus bulls. Breeding philosophies are similar in both studs and buyers can be assured they will have the choice from some of the best bloodlines in Australasia. Burenda Angus was originally located at Augathella in the 1990's but has been operating at "Dalby Downs" Kaimkillenbun for nearly 10 years. It is conducted in conjunction with our Burenda Brangus stud. About 450 registered Angus breeders are joined mainly by A.I. with back up natural matings and embryos are transferred into a number a recipients. Leading Australian Sires are used along with selected US Sires to

improve certain traits. This year's E and F bulls had a hard time during the 2 months of flooding but have done well since moving onto oats in May. We will present about 33 two year old E bulls and 22 eighteen month old F bulls. Sires represented in the Burenda Angus line up include; Te Mania bulls VTMB580, VTMY437, Ardrossan Bulls NAQA2 and NAQA241, Dunoon BHRA017 and Burenda QBUY4 Full details of our Roma sale bulls will appear on our website www.burendaangus.com.au during August including full information and videos of each lot. We grow our own bulls out on Leucaena and grass and they move onto oats when it is ready. This combination proves successful on achieving good weight gains and the bulls

receive no grain in their preparation. There is a good blend of various traits and types in this year's sale and buyers are assured they will have good choices. Carcase quality is of paramount importance in our breeding philosophy and as the Angus breed are world leaders in this trait, consumers like the Angus product. The Burenda draft of bulls in our 2010 Roma sale topped the Queensland average with $6156. This year Lawsons Angus are offering 35 two-year old bulls all bred by AI from high accuracy proven Angus sires including Lawsons Dinky-Di Z191, Lawsons Tank X1235, Lawsons Payload X951, Wilson Downs Equator V191, SS Objective, TC Total, Ythanbrae Pono V346, GAR Ultimate and Leachman Boom Time. Bulls are well grown and ready to go to work!

Lawsons Angus has been in business since 1969 and is the largest Angus seedstock producer in Australia. Lawsons Angus 42ndAnnual Production Sale in March 2011 is the largest Angus bull sale in Australia, which saw 210 bulls sold with 100% clearance to average over $5,700 and 260 females averaging $2,270. Lawsons Angus is regarded as the leading Angus seedstock herd in Australia, which produces around 1,000 Angus bulls per year with an unmatched balance of calving ease, feed conversion, fertility, high growth and exceptional carcase yield and quality. The bulls on offer at Roma are the same quality and sired by the same world high accuracy AI sires. Lawsons Angus is not only Australia's Angus largest seedstock but has divi-

sions in Queensland (Goondiwindi), Victoria (Yea) and Western Australia (Esperance). All herds are 100% AI with a disciplined PLANNED MATING PROGRAM that delivers consistent, predictable genetics. Last year's Roma Sale bulls had a rough period prior to sale with the floods and did not present well visually (phenotypically) but we have had very positive feedback on how these bulls adapted to their new homes. The calf-getting ability of Angus bulls and the extra growth and marketability of the Angus cross calves sired by proven performance Angus is what sets Lawsons Angus bulls apart. Breedplan (EBVs) may be abstract to most commercial buyers it is the most accurate way to make consistent, predictable progress so we urge you to take make use of this data and not focus on actual sale weights and scans as these are more indicative of management/environment. Breedplan information reflects how these bulls and their siblings have performed relative to their mates and other Angus across Australia. The Breedplan EBVs accurately describe and predict what will be passed onto their calves and is a very accurate way of ranking bulls for key traits including calving ease, growth and carcase traits. This is rock solid, simple technology that is still being under utilised by northern breeders and this is often accentuated by a focus on actual weight on sale day. There are many differences in an individual bulls' weight even between contemporary groups with factors such as date of birth, calving season, paddock, age of dam, fighting and social group impacts. All this raw data is analysed in Breedplan and through genetic linkage within and between herds we can compare animals accurately using Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). Some simple practical advice on Breedplan is if you are mating heifers select bulls that are under breed average for birth weight (<4.6 BW EBV) and 600 Day growth is the best predictor for how fast progeny will grow, we refer this to a bulls 'horsepower' rating and is highly correlated to growth rates and feed conversion of calves. Again, no other herd can match the calving ease, high growth combination of Lawsons Angus. Currently 800 registered Angus cows are run under a disciplined 100% AI program at Kinbeachie near Goondiwindi under a joint venture with the Sullivan family. Cows are inseminated to the best Angus proven sires available, selected mainly from Australia and the United States. All cows are synchronised for two rounds of AI over 25 days so there is huge selection pressure on fertility. As Harry Lawson commented "Just because we performance record doesn't mean we don't focus on structure, temperament, udders and conformation, in fact we have a better handle on than most because we individually mate every cow and have large sire lines by the world leading AI sires so we know all the strengths and weaknesses of bulls even before we use them widely across the main cow herd." Kate Todd and Harry Lawson look forward to meeting you at Roma along with the Burenda team who we are pleased to be able to work with to put together a great selection of Angus bulls adapted to Queensland conditions that are ideal for hitting top end MSA specifications or high quality feedlot markets. This year's bulls will again sell with full information including, pedigrees, EBVs, ultrasound scanning details, scrotal measurements and daily weight gain and will also be blooded for tick fever, vaccinated for three day sickness, botulism, vibrio, and 7 in 1 vaccine. They will be independently assessed for soundness and fertility and carry a two year warranty. FREE TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE TO SEVERAL CENTRES

Paddock inspections are welcomed at any time by arrangement with either Jonathan Schmidt from Burenda Angus 0429 067 313 or Kate Todd from Lawsons Angus

A gene found naturally in Limousin cattle can provide an increase in the amount of high priced cuts in a beef carcase. University of Adelaide researcher Dr Wayne Pitchford said research showed the eye muscle area is 19 percent larger in cattle carrying the gene than cattle with no copies of the gene. Similarly, the weight of the silverside muscle was also 19% larger. "The size of the muscle fibres does not change but there is a reduction in connective tissue caused by an increase in the number of muscle fibres," Dr Pitchford said. "The good news is that animals with the gene do not require any more feed. "You are basically getting more meat for the same cost of production.

higher dressing percentages which account for about 8 cents per kg liveweight and the higher yields of retail beef from the carcase," Mr McDonald said. "At the carcase level an increase in yield of four percent on a 250 kg carcase represents 10 kg more saleable meat. At an average retail price of $16.50/kg this represents $165 at retail level. "The producer gets paid more but the wholesaler wins because he gets a heavier carcase and the retailer wins because of the increased yield of retail beef." Mr McDonald said Limousin cattle

"The good news is that animals with the gene do not require any more feed. "You are basically getting more meat for the same cost of production. "The gene is a modification of the myostatin gene and is found naturally in Limousin cattle although there is a low frequency of the gene in other breeds such as Angus and Droughtmaster. Meanwhile an analysis of 1.5 million cattle sold in eastern Australian saleyard has shown that buyers are willing to pay large premiums for muscling. Limousin Society general manger Alex McDonald said the higher proportion of high priced cuts in better muscled cattle was the reason for the willingness to pay the premium. "The reasons for the premium prices paid for better muscled cattle are due to

also enable breeders to avoid the increasingly controversial Hormone Growth Promotants. Mr McDonald said crossbreeding and selection within breeds enabled producers to get better gains than HGP could provide. "Breeds such as the Limousin breed can provide large increases in retail beef yields and increased tenderness when used in cross breeding programs," he said. "The increased retail beef yield provided by Limousin exceeds the effect of treatment with HGPs especially in heifers and increases rather than decreases tenderness and eating quality."

130 Raff Angus bulls sell at Drillham on 19th September Monday 19th September will see a record number of Raff Angus bulls go up for auction at the annual Raff Angus Bull Sale at “Mundibulanga" Drillham Queensland. This year's sale offering represents the first progeny to sell of new sires that resulted from the importation of new genetics into the Raff Angus breeding program in recent years. In addition, a number of direct progeny from these genetics will sell including flush brothers to many of the sires that have been retained. The 2010 Brisbane Royal Show Grand Champion Angus Bull and Runner-up Interbreed winner Raff Dallas D216 will have his first sons cataloged. At the Adelaide Royal Show last September, where he was awarded the Reserve Senior Champion Angus Bull, he weighed in excess of 1200 kg's with an EMA measurement of 138 sq cm and IMF% of 7.0%. A number of son's sell by Raff Defender D218 who himself sells as ‘Stud Sire Feature Lot 2'. He is an import sire whose two full flush brothers sold at auction to average $19,500 in 2009. Danny Boy is outcross in pedigree to the mainstream Angus. Raff Dakota D85 has his first progeny sell. Dakota was used as a yearling and is a ¾ brother to the outstanding stud sire Hoff Limited Edition 594 who himself will again have son's sell.

Raff Dynamite D345 sells himself as ‘Stud Sire Feature Lot 1' and will have some high performance son's sell also. His flush sister Raff Blackbird D349 has been a Supreme Exhibit during this years show circuit and will feature at the Brisbane Royal Show later in the year. Raff X-Factor X3 has son's sell after being re-introduced as a stud sire into the Raff breeding program after selling as the 2003 high selling bull. Now nine years of age X-Factor excels for marbling on all performance indicators. The sire of both this years Sydney Royal Show ‘Senior' and ‘Junior' Champion Bulls J & C Appeal A10 will again have a number of progeny in the sale. To date his progeny have met with strong demand averaging $8,750 at auction sales. J & C Appeal is the sire of Raff Empire E269, this year's Sydney Royal Junior Champion, who has won nine Supreme Inter-breed Championships at NSW and QLD shows. In 2008 Raff Angus purchased O'Neill's Royal Edge K337 from America. With a direct son selling privately for $20,000 at this year's Sydney Royal Show he again has son's selling. Canadian sire DMM Shift 78S had the

Australian semen rights purchased by Raffs that same year as Royal Edge, he also has more sons selling 19th September. Fully imported embryo progeny sell including sons of Papa Equator, Shady Brook Prime, Leachman Prompter, Hoff Trail Boss, Hoff Charger, O'Neill's Renovator, O'Neill's Expedition and TC Dividend. All Raff Angus Bulls that sell on Monday September 19th sell with generations of Pedigree Documentation, HD50k for Angus Molecular Value Predictors, Estimated Breeding Values and Ultrasound Scanning Information. On the Rump Promise of a 31,000 great season CIRCULATION

‘On the Rump’ is delivered direct to landholders via Australia Post’s rural mail services from central Queensland down to northern New South Wales and into the Northern Territory.

F RO N T C OV E R

This year is the first ‘On the Rump’ that has been delivered without our passionate Kym Ellem, unfortunately Kim has moved into a new career and we, and I am sure our stud breeders also miss her greatly. She has left very large footprints that will take a lot of filling. This year we have just concentrated on producing our ‘On the Rump’ publication and you will notice that we do not have our extra publication of ‘Big Beef Business’ and our ‘Boarding School’ feature. The intention is that this will be re-introduced in 2012. 2011 has already brought many challenges for our rural industries, with record rainfall and the

inevitable floods we have seen the end of a significant dry period that threatened the viability of beef producers. From all reports for our stud breeders this year has brought forward a great season, one that will be remember and one that will continue for years to come. I think Australia’s primary producers are the most optimistic people in the world, they continue to look for better times to come, and hopefully this current period will be the perfect storm and provide our primary producers with as many years of good times as they had to endure of the bad times. I keep it and refer to it throughout the year. It is all I need to make decisions about buying bulls for my cattle operation.” 2. OUR ADVERTISERS LOVE IT - A number of comments made by stud breeders. “On the Rump has a great circulation which goes to all the places I need to cover with the guarantee of being delivered direct to graziers and not wasted on town deliveries.” “It is a well presented publication and with the guarantee of getting free editorial to further enhance my advertising, it is great value for money.” “The staff are so helpful, ensuring that we have plenty of time to view a proof and ensuring that our advertising appears just as we would like it to in the publication.”
