Another BIG year ahead Delivering a quality publication year after year can be a challenging task however we are again really pleased with the outcome of this year's edition of On the Rump. With high expectations, all of us here working behind the scenes, take great pride in putting forward a top quality product that does justice to the many stud breeders and businesses within these pages. 2009 has seen the introduction of our latest initiative, "Big Beef Business" which focuses on wider facets of the beef industry. The demand from industry related businesses and services advertising in On the Rump, was nearing the point where we believed it warranted its own publication. We also didn't want to jeopardise the uniqueness of On the Rump which focuses on stud beef cattle. It is,

We have been overwhelmed by the tremendous support we have had at On the Rump in 2009 and trust this publication will assist you in determining your bull requirements for the year ahead. There is no doubt there are many hurdles facing the beef industry at present although it's great to see so many people getting out there and having a go. 70 PERFORMANCE RECORDED BULLS 70 SALE 18TH SEPTEMBER 2009

Scott and Anne Maree Attwooll's breeding program is about striving to produce the most profitable cattle they can for their family and their clients. It is why they have focused on traits of high economic importance - the things that make commercial producers money. The recent tough years, and their involvement in the Durham research project has highlighted the need to run moderate-sized, efficient cows and profitfocused cattle. At Woolcott Shorthorns, the purpose is to breed and market cattle with "no fluff"; what you see is what you get. The policy is to run them tough and let the good ones surface on their own; this is what longevity is all about. High production costs and lower margins are making us all focus on costs. Our feedlot partners are reducing days on feed; the last thing they need is high maintenance, inefficient cattle. We can

now breed moderate-sized cattle with superior growth rates, higher feed efficiency, better levels and more even fat deposition and higher levels of intra muscular fat. Scott and Anne Maree believe the best performing Shorthorn cattle rise to the top in any non-tropical production system. They are proud of their sale draft which they describe as really productive, profit -focused bulls that have the staying power and the genetics to breed on into the future. These cattle have been handled in their calving management groups, with, apart from the show bulls, no special treatment for individual animals. The good bulls do it on their own merit. The Attwoolls welcome any pre-sale inspection and look forward to catching up with you at their sale, and would greatly appreciate your honest perspectives of their catalogue of sires in 2009.

Results speak for themselves This year Texas Angus will be offering 100 big power bulls that always weigh. There will be a mix of leading AI sires including R/M Casflow 102, Ardrossan Connection, Admiral, and W109, St Paul's Traces, and plenty of our homebred sires including Texas Frontier Z29 and Texas Ultra Z93. Always heartened to receive positive feedback on their Texas bulls, stud principals, Bill, Judy, Ben and Wendy Mayne have decided to recall their clients' successful results which reaffirms their breeding program is on target.

Central Queensland Congratulations to the Lloyd family of Northern Queensland who won the Champion pen of steers at the Nebo Cattle Show last year. With more than 1000 head entered in the competition and a combination of grass and grain-fed categories the Judge, Mr Lance Smith, believed the Lloyd's grassfed Brangus steers had the better margin compared to the grainfed steers. These 726kg steers later sold for a premium of $1.99/kg and had a solid influence of Texas genetics. The Lloyd family has been buying Texas Angus for a number of years and are very happy with the Brangus Angus cross. This result indicates just how well Texas Angus is performing in northern Queensland. Barry and Vicky Gifford of Wran Creek Brangus sold a herd bull at the Rockhampton Brangus Sale for $15,000 last year which almost topped the sale. This young sire was a son of Texas Ultra W177 who Barry and Vicky purchased at the 2003 Texas bull sale. So far sons of Texas Ultra W177 have averaged $9,500 for the Gifford's. Congratulations to Barry and Vicky, their excellent stud breeding program is obviously paying dividends. Southern Queensland Texas Angus progeny have also excelled for the Harvey family of Stanthorpe as their pen of replacement Angus heifers won 1st prize at the Stanthorpe Show in 2008 and then went onto win Grand Champion grassfed steer and grand champion carcase at this year's Stanthorpe Show. The heifers and steer were sired by Texas Yellowstone Y39 who was purchased at the 2005 Texas sale. Northern New South Wales Sam and Jenny Bailey of "Pine Hills", Croppa Creek took out the prize for the best Pen of British or British Cross steers at the Inverell Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale on April 30 with a pen of 16 tenmonth-old Angus steers, weighing an average 321kg. The pen of steers also won the over all top prize for the Grand Champion Pen against more than 4000 weaners at the sale. Sam and Jenny have been purchasing Texas Angus Stud bulls since 2001. A large proportion of the prize-winning steers carried Texas bloodlines, via both sires and Sam and Jenny's breeding herd which includes a large number of females by Texas bulls. Sam and Jenny currently run an Angus herd of

4

120 cows, with plans to expand over the next few years by keeping their own heifers. They target the weaner market, turning eight to ten-month-old steers off their months and either selling at the feature weaner sales or on farm. Their goal is to get maximum growth between 200 and 400 days in their steers, while producing good framed, very quiet fertile heifers which produce plenty of milk. They put their main focus on looking after their cow herd, to the extent of putting in oats solely for their cows. Their philosophy is 'if you look after the cow, the cow will look after the calf'. They choose Texas bulls because of their growth, frame and bone, milking ability and very importantly, quiet temperament. Also congratulations to Sam and Jenny for their very successful book "Head Over Heels" and their expanding public speaking, the certainly have put Croppa Creek on the map! New England The late David Wright of Maria River Cattle Co started buying Texas bulls in 2003. The family has been impressed by the bulls performance, frame, fertility and temperament and have been sole repeat buyers ever since. Shane Carey, General Manager of Maria River Cattle Co would recommend Texas bulls to anyone wanting Angus genetics. Maria River Cattle Co results at the New England Angus Weaner Sales speak for themselves. 2006 93 Steers sold and 43 steers topped the sale at $725/hd 2007 73 Steers and 49 heifers were sale second highest price on the day 2008 41 weaner heifers topped the sale at $555/hd 2009 125 steers sold to $675 second highest at the sale 2008 Topped the New England Angus Breeders Sale with 36 PTIC maiden heifers at $774/hd 2009 Topped the New England Angus Breeders Sale with 46 PTIC maiden heifers at $832 Full credit to Shane's breeding and management program; he only just informed us they preg tested in excess of 1300 females and only had 8 dry - an amazing result!

Trevor and Jenny York run a 600 head herd of commercial Simmental and Simmental cross breeders in the Maranoa's Wallumbilla district from which they select their composite Simmental bulls. The Hyde Park composite Simmentals have been established on a solid foundation of Hereford and Braford genetics. The combination of these genetics produce breeders with excellent fertility, milk and mothering traits, good temperament, softness and structural correctness plus ease of calving to produce progeny with good weight for age and the ability to have an even fat cover, all of which are very important criteria for European style cattle. The Hyde Park cattle perform and sell well in the grower, feeder and prime cattle markets with the quality of the cattle being reflected by the prices received in

Herefords - MSA award winners Three Queensland Hereford sales occur on consecutive days again this year giving buyers the opportunity to select from nearly 200 bulls. The Southern Cross Sale will be held on Thursday 10th of September with Cootharaba the day before and Wallan Creek the day after. “Hereford bulls have a major place in increasing the meat quality of Bos Indicus and Bos Indicus cross herds and helping them better meet market specifications. By putting our sales together we give buyers from the more extensive areas the chance to purchase larger lines of herd sires,” the vendors state. Increasingly, premiums are being offered by processors for cattle that grade MSA, and understandably so when MLA reports a $1.70 premium at the retail level across all MSA graded cuts. The Hereford breed can help you achieve this premium. At Beef 2009, this year, Hereford cross steers won the MSA award for Champion Carcase and

Champion Group of 3 Carcases. Herefords are renowned for being quiet cattle and this is not only an advantage when handling them in the yards. Research has shown that the quickest way to increase meat quality is NOT to select for tenderness but to select for TEMPERAMENT. This year the Southern Cross sale will offer an increased number of 65 bulls on Thursday, 10th September, at the Pinora Sales complex, Jackson. Steve and Debbie Reid will present 36 bulls pre-

pared on oats and blooded with 3 germ blood for the benefit of those in ticky areas. Sires represented include Bundarra Wally and Foxforth Valuable whose sons proved popular last year, as well as Charnock Fireball, Courallie Advance and Ironbark Hot Shot W264. This year's draft exhibit excellent growth and muscling while retaining the softness required for easy finishing. Tom Nixon will increase his presence in the sale with 30 bulls this year, all blooded, and selected from the well known Devoncourt cow herd. They will be by breed leading sires such as Courallie Young Gun, Charnock Haymaker and the polled Nooken Zilla. Steve says the Devoncourt bulls fit in well with the Talbalba bulls as they are strong carcase cattle and raised under similar commercial conditions. The bulls will be available for inspection at any time on farm or from Tuesday 8th of September at Pinora.

the saleyard. Also of importance is the ability of the Hyde Park cast for age cows to produce a good return after finishing their breeding time. “We've found that by focusing on breeding high quality attributes into our cattle they deliver positive results at every stage from the paddock to the plate,” Trevor said. The Yorks utilise the best of the bull draft each year over their herd to retain the weight, growth, softness and fat cover needed for above average carcase yields. The Hyde Park bull draft this year has been selected to produce progeny that will perform in all markets. All bulls have been vaccinated for the tick fever, 3 day sickness, vibrio, and 5 in 1, and will have vet checks, semen tests and muscle and fat scans before sale day. Trevor and Jenny's son and daughterin-law, Dan and Kristie will also have 10 Simbrah bulls from their Wattle Park Simbrah herd for sale at Roma. Included in their draft will be a line of red Simbrah bulls by a red Brahman sire, Samari Plains Harrison. The Wattle Park bulls will have the same vaccinations, checks and scans as the Hyde Park bulls. For further information contact, Trevor and Jenny York on 07 4623 5242, or Dan and Kristie York on 07 4623 4265.

Santa Gertrudis are in demand Crossbreeding Santa Gertrudis with British and European cattle has proven to be both successful and profitable for many beef producers. In recent years some outstanding crossbred Santa Gertrudis results and wide recognition have been achieved with Brahman, Charolais, Hereford and Angus. All of which are meeting market requirements. “Crossbred Santa Gertrudis are second to none with purebred Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertrudis infused cattle regularly topping store and prime cattle sales across Australia. The added bonus is hybrid vigour, achieved because of the breed's purebred status over 55 years. They are sought after by all major meatworks and processors because of their excellent yield potential and suitability for a wide range of top grade markets,” said Russell Reed, General Manager of Santa Gertrudis Australia.

Santa Gertrudis infused cattle make outstanding export steers and the dairy industry has discovered the benefit of Santa Gertrudis making excellent vealer sires. It's the flexibility and adaptability of Santa Gertrudis that producers see them as real profit generators. And, in today's environment who is not focused upon profit? Clearly with Santa Gertrudis you have an industry acknowledged benefit of their outstanding feed conversion efficiency and rapid daily weight gain. Recently, 235 head from Acton

Land and Cattle Company were fed at Grassdale Feedlot for 105 days. The Santa Gertrudis average daily weight gain of 2.47kg coupled with average a daily feed consumption of 15.46kg, and a feed conversion ratio of 6.27 to 1, clearly demonstrated that Santa Gertrudis are the profit generators. Russell Reed added, “Whilst we do talk about and regularly participate in feedlot trials it is equally important to remember that Santa Gertrudis perform very well on grass and natural pasture.”

“Santa's have held up well for us during the dry times and when we had to put the cattle on feed they have performed well for us. We have found Santa's to be good all rounders and adaptable to most markets.”

A consignment of Santa steers belonging to Acton Land and Cattle Company were fed at Grassdale Feedlot for 105 days. The line averaged a daily weight gain of 2.47kg.

Calender of Sale Events “Geographically we have Santa Gertrudis successfully performing across every state and territory, which is indicative of the ability of our breed to adapt and deliver performance and profit for producers. At the same time we are meeting the requirements of processors, wholesalers, retailers and restaurateurs. “To meet the market we schedule from March to October no less than 32 sale events across Australia. This provides convenience for buyers who really do not have to travel far to purchase quality cattle,” commented Russell Reed.

Bruce Roberts “Callistemon” Springsure

Excellent progeny, rapid weight gain, outstanding feed conversion efficiency...that’s Santa Gertrudis

Unfortunately after leaving College we went straight into the beef depression and it took a good few years to get a few Santa bulls into the herd. We kicked off crossing Santa bulls over our Hereford cows and produced some of the best steers we have had. We have stuck with Santa’s ever since. We try and maintain a good Santa based breeder herd for their big frame and their mothering ability. We find they are a good cow to cross over and then cull out the undesirable heifers. We run the property as a family business to breed and fatten. All our cattle are sold off as fats direct to the meatworks. Santa’s have held up well for us during the dry times and when we had to put the cattle on feed they have performed well for us. We have found Santa’s to be good all rounders and adaptable to most markets.

The Torres Park Santa herd comprises just over 4000 cattle, in a breeding and fattening operation on the headquarters of the Warrego River. The major genetics are Robenlea, Yarrawonga and Moongana Studs. For many years we have regularly been among both the highest weights and highest values at the Roma Saleyards. Our Santas have won Champion and Reserve Champion Pen of Steers at the Roma Special Santa Sale in the past. In 1998 our cattle placed fourth in the heavyweight grain fed pen of steers in the Royal Show Competition in Brisbane. We love the breed for many reasons, such as the extremely long breeding life of the cows, and the heifers that calve early and easily, plus the great growth and weight gains that mean dollars in the bank.

Living in Western Queensland, we find Santa Gertrudis cattle perform well for our operation. Our cattle run on a mix of mulga, spinnifex and channel country and perform well considering the seasons have been tough for several years. The females are good mothers and produce excellent weight-gaining progeny. Santas display hardiness and their temperament is sound. We predominately sell weaner steers into the EU market where the returns are favourable. HERB AND SUE GEORGE – GLEN VALLEY, JUNDAH

Whether it is grainfed, E.U. or grassfed export markets, the Santas have done a great job for us. As well they are a beautiful sight in green grass on the rolling hills. SG2323AW

I first came across Santa Gertrudis cattle while I was a student at Longreach Pastoral College in the early 70’s. I was impressed by the size of the bulls and got to see some Santa, Shorthorn X Steers and thought they looked pretty impressive.

Ian and Sally Vivers are the sixth generation of the family to run cattle in the renowned Kingsplains Valley west of Glen Innes. Previous generations have been commercial cattlemen and it is from them that the breeding philosophies, that drive Eaglehawk, have come. “All our decision making is based on asking ourselves whether both our clients and our own bottom line will be improved,” Ian said. First, and most importantly, Ian and Sally look at on farm indicators. “Cattle of any breed have to be able have a calf every year from the age of two. They then must be able to wean as heavy a calf as possible on the resources supplied,” Ian said. Anybody who has been to see the Eaglehawk herd has seen that the cattle run under very commercial conditions. Ian makes no apologies for this. “If they won't stand up to tough conditions then they will not be the efficient

8

low cost breeders that our clients need. We want low running cost cattle that produce heavy weaner and yearling cattle,” Ian says. The team at Eaglehawk don't stop there. Over the years they have put in the hard yards researching and testing their herd. The sires they have used have all been thoroughly assessed. Travelling extensively through the United States eight times in the past 14 years researching and sourcing genetics has given this business sound knowledge to supply genetics confidently. Ian adds, “We then test the results as much as we can through our 1000 head feedlot.” The flow on from this has been the development of a beef brand exclusive to Eaglehawk and its clients. Marketed under the name “Eaglehawk Farms Gourmet Angus” this premium beef product is “Range fed” meaning they are fed on a corn based ration whilst still hav-

ing pasture access. “We are very excited about the prospects for the “Eaglehawk Farms” brand. We wanted to put our money where our mouth is. We believe Eaglehawk genetics will provide the best eating beef on the market so by establishing the brand we hope to be able to provide our bull buying clients a superior market for their progeny. As I said it is about improving the bottom line,” Ian said. Ian and Sally at Eaglehawk Angus seem to have every base covered. They research the genetics ensuring top on farm performance, they breed the bulls and then they provide a superior additional market for their client's progeny. What else is there? To be a part of all this, the Eaglehawk Angus bull sale is on Wednesday August 12th 2009 on property west of Glen Innes. Call them for a catalogue on 02 6733 6880 or go to www.eaglehawkangus.com.au.

Gyranda: Above average fertility, growth rate and feed conversion = PROFITABILITY The Gyranda Santa Gertrudis herd is no stranger to research. Burnett and Louise Joyce believe that the Australian beef industry, not only Gyranda, must be the beneficiaries. This research has always had commercial profitability as its goal. Higher reproduction rates, sustainable growth and improved carcass attributes are always priority traits.

Two years ago Burnett and Louise made the decision to quit the show ring, and to put their efforts into displays (eg Aggrow), and prime cattle classes at shows. They see these as being more relevant to commercial reality, which is pivotal to their operation. The Gyranda herd has evolved into one of the most efficient operations in

the industry. Adherence to strict selection criterion and utilising performance recording as a management tool has resulted in a herd that has earned Gyranda the reputation of being one of the best quality and the most progressive beef cattle studs in Australia. Their clients know the X3X cattle's reputation for their adaptability and

docility and have found they perform extremely well under harsh environmental conditions. They are easy to handle, and their fertility is tops. Gyranda has not received relief from the drought, and is in its 23rd year of below average rainfall. As Burnett says, “This makes efficiency even more important to us. We put pressure on our heifers to calve out at 20 24 months.” This has resulted in an extremely fertile herd. These first calf females have been pregnancy tested and their calves weaned. They returned a pregnancy rate of 88%, with average weaner weight of 250kg. The results in prime cattle classes at shows this year is testament to the above average growth rate and feed conversion being achieved at Gyranda, again under natural conditions. These results included Most Successful Exhibitor at Theodore, Champion Pen of Interbreed Bulls at Eidsvold, and Champion Grass Fed Female at Taroom.

The Gyranda herd has evolved into one of the most efficient operations in the industry.

With their son Dan having recently returned to be more involved in the business, and with a loyal team of family and staff, Burnett and Louise have enjoyed a little more time to catch up with friends and clients. “Feedback is essential to our business. We love visiting our clients and colleagues, looking at their cattle and operations. This gives us insight into how we can better meet their needs,” Burnett said. Burnett and Louise have recently returned from a five week trip to South America, where Burnett was judging at a prestigious heifer show. Semen from their sires has been used in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, and they were thrilled to see outstanding progeny in many areas, under both good and marginal conditions. Gyranda holds an Annual Bull Sale, where there are 100 to120 bulls on offer. This year 's sale is on Thursday 17th September 2009. Their Pre-Sale Open Day is on Thursday 13th August, where internationally recognised Professor Michael McGowan will be guest speaker.

Huntington intend to keep their sales stimulating Company spokesman Matt Welsh says that before “Kevin and Wayne caught onto the idea”, Huntington Stud introduced the 'stimulus' concept, and they intend to keep the 'big event excitement' flowing. “Mind you, there is a big difference between ours and the Rudd/Swan stimulus package,” Matt was quick to point out. “We're not just being generous with other people's money.” Their annual Huntington spring bull sale, held in early October, is the premier event on the calendar for the Taroom based Charolais/Charbray stud, and last year they marked it in celebratory style. “The sale is something we look forward to with great excitement each year, and we like to treat it as a real occasion. Like any business planning a very important event, we frame up a promotional budget, and last year, being our tenth anniversary, gave us cause to give our advertising spend extra attention.” Matthew explained: “We all sat

down and looked over the history of the event and the standout feature of the analysis was the huge growth in the catalogue, buyer numbers and market territory.” The first Huntington sale, which was held in 1998, offered a total of 60 Charolais and Charbray bulls on behalf of Welsh Cattle Co together with special guest vendors Branchview Charolais and the now dispersed Bunya Vale Charolais studs. “Last year we catalogued over 220 lots, including 25 Branchview Charolais bulls, a four-fold growth in just a decade. So we looked at our promotional program to find a way to directly reward the buyers who have returned year after year in growing numbers to drive that growth.” The marketing brains-trust decided to trim back on some advertising in order to purchase a brand new 250cc quad bike which they gave away to the lucky buyer of one lot drawn from the catalogue at the conclusion of the sale.

Huntington Commerce has generated plenty of interest in the showring this year and will be a feature lot at the Huntington Spring bull sale.

“We knew there was a risk attached to the concept, and possibly some people even viewed it as a flimflam idea, but our intention was genuine; we really wanted to say thank you to our buyers in a positive and material way. “I can tell you that we understand, absolutely, that bull buyers, especially commercial cattle producers who know from long experience what it takes to succeed in this industry, will not turn up and buy an inferior animal even if it came wearing a mink coat. “We will always succeed or perish on the quality of our seedstock and we've worked hard to establish a reputation for high performing Charolais and Charbrays over many years. We're not about to throw that away. “Of course, the Postle family (Branchview), who have sold with us throughout the whole history of our sale, equally have a very proud reputation to protect, so we were sensitive to any perception that we may be detracting from the seriousness of the sale. We are constantly mindful that asking buyers to invest in our seedstock carries a real responsibility, and we value above all else the ongoing relationship we have with our clients, “Matt said. Therefore, to ascertain buyer reaction to the ‘stimulus’ concept, Huntington surveyed attendees before the start of last year’s sale and found the sentiment was “overwhelmingly positive”. “Some were a bit indifferent - fair enough too - but overwhelmingly buyers knew exactly where we were coming from and just about all said they appreciated being appreciated. “It was obvious that the excitement we have for our sale was spread among everyone there, and that was exhilarating for us. People tell us there is something of a party atmosphere at our sale, and we absolutely love it. The sale was a success, and now we not only intend

Caleb was the top priced bull at the Winton sale, purchased by Len Bode, Percol Downs, McKinlay for $13,000. to continue with this 'stimulus package' concept, we are improving it. ‘I'm certain buyers will like the surprise we've got in the box this year. The only person who might have a long face is our advertising rep,” Matt smiled. The Huntington sale will again be held in October (Friday, 2nd) after being held back from the usual late August date for the first time last year, another change buyers enthusiastically approved of. “Because of the continuing growth in our client base and expanding market territory we decided to hold our spring sale in October to better satisfy most breeding timelines. And because none of our bulls are whole-of-life fed and therefore ready to go straight to work, our clients have endorsed this later sale date enthusiastically. “Our client territory has grown massively over the past 11 years, and we are now getting very positive feedback from far western and northern breeders who are using our bulls with great success.

“In May, in conjunction with Boobi Stud, we conducted our inaugural 'Matilda Country Charolais/Charbray Sale' at Winton with a high quality offering of 58 bulls. Bruce and Liz Godfrey of Boobi Stud, Lanifer are well known for the superb bloodlines they have developed and proven to perform outstandingly in western conditions, and this sale was an opportunity for us to take and showcase our seedstock to a growing western base of buyers. The sale was a resounding success, resulting in a complete clearance with a very realistic average satisfying buyers and vendors alike. “We're also proud to lay claim to having the biggest single-brand Charbray sale in Australia, and therefore a major supplier of consistent quality in this breed that is filling a need long demanded by commercial producers,” Matt said.

The Russell family of Swan Hill stud, Blackall, will this year hold their 41st Annual Bull Sale on property, on Tuesday 17 November. The Annual Auction Sale will offer a total draft of 120 bulls including Santa Gertrudis bulls, Charolais X Santa and Red Angus X Santa bulls. Swan Hill will also offer bulls in the Big S Sale in Toowoomba on Thursday 3 September and at the Balonne Invitation Bull Sale at “Myall Plains”, Nindigully, on Monday 14 September. The bulls catalogued for the Big S Sale include prospective young stud sires from the show team, and the Balonne bulls include a mix of stud and commercial bulls. In addition to scans and semen tests, the Swan Hill bulls will be GeneStar tested and results will be available on sale day. Cam Russell said that the stud has continued GeneStar testing and he had been pleased with high results recorded for both tenderness and feed efficiency. Swan Hill offered almost 30 bulls at the Elders Longreach All Breeds Sale in March of this year for a complete clearance and an average of over $3,700. Cam Russell also said that the return to good seasons in 2008 had seen a renewed investment in the stud's Santa Gertrudis sire battery with the purchase of several new sires. Cree Commander was purchased at the August Rockhampton Santa Gertrudis Sale for $20,000. He is a poll, Tyndale Noddy son and is a young sire with a lot of potential. He has an excellent Daily Life Gain of 1.20 kg and an EMA of 128 sq cm. Other purchases include Cree Casanova (a grandson of Tyndale Noddy) and Rowenlea Crawford (PS) Rowenlea Cadet and Waco Victa. Cam Russell said that the Stud was continuing with the established programme of breeding Charolais/Santa Gertrudis cross, and the Red Angus/Santa Gertrudis cross bulls. He said that these cross-bred bulls are attracting attention for their excellent growth rates and beef character. He added that many producers were looking to maximize the hybrid vigour in their calves by joining straight-bred cows to F1 bulls such as Charolais/Santa

12

Swan Hill Studmaster, Cam Russell with daughter Alexa and son Declan at the Longreach All Breeds Sale March 2009. and Red Angus/Santa. The stud has invested in top line Charolais and Red Angus sires in recent years and is endeavouring to present top quality crossbred bulls. The Charolais sires are form Queensland's leading Charolais studs — Palgrove, Gunnadoo and Advance and include Palgrove Xclusive (P), Palgrove Xult (AI) (ET) (P), Gunnadoo Xterminator and Gunnadoo Xodus. These bulls were purchased in the spring of 2004 and mated to selected purebred Santa Gertrudis cows. Swan Hill's commitment to quality Red Angus genetics was confirmed with the addition of two new sires in 2007. GK Red Absolute Power A7 was purchased at the Dubbo National Sale for top price of $18,000 from Gavin and Kirrily Iseppi. Absolute Power was subsequently judged Grand Champion Red Angus Bull at the Brisbane Exhibition and was 3rd in the All Breeds Championship. He has been joined in the stud by Mt Hunter Red Alien A15 (ET) (AI), also purchased at the Dubbo National sale for $16,000. RRA Red Approval was purchased at the Sydney Show Sale in 2008.

Charlevue shines In early May 2009 the Australian Beef Cattle Championships were held in Rockhampton, better known as Beef Australia 2009. Cattle from all around Australia were exhibited before some of the best judges nationally and internationally. Charlevue Brangus exhibited stud cattle for their first major showing at Beef 2009. The results were outstanding with the stud winning Calf Champion Male, Junior Champion Female, Reserve Senior Champion Bull, Senior Champion and Grand Champion Brangus Female. Also on their gun notch they won first place in the Breeders Group and first place on the Sire's Progeny Group. All Charlevue exhibits placed either first or second in their classes. It was an outstanding result among the largest showing of Brangus cattle ever. Charlevue excelled amazingly and proved without a doubt that they are one of the top studs in the business. The highlight for stud principals, Brad and Jane Saunders was when their female, Charlevue Bella was

awarded the prestigious Interbreed Championship of Australia up against the best females in the country from some 33 breeds. Renowned international judge, Dr Jim Sanders stated she was the most correct, functional female, and the most economical and cost effective exhibit lead before him. He commented on the strength the cow has in her udder development and milking attributes which was displayed beautifully by her heifer calf at foot. At 28 months of age she has already raised one calf and is two months off calving again which proves her excellent fertility traits. This female boosts length, bone and structure with plenty of size and depth in her body. Dr Jim Sanders exclaimed this female would suit any operation in the world and Charlevue takes that praise with utmost pride. The excellent results at Beef 2009 gave the stud the confidence their breeding programme is on the right path. As Brad and Jane Saunders said, “To compete in the ultimate beef seed stock competition in Australia,

Charlevue Bella, sired by Charlevue X-Factor, took out the prestigious title of Interbreed Championship of Australia at Beef Week. The 28 month old female was described by judge, Dr Jim Sanders as a female that would suit any beef operation in the world.

Charlevue Centrefield

Brad and Jane Saunders of Charlevue Brangus with three of their outstanding bulls. against 2069 stud cattle exhibits from over 33 breeds, and walk away with so many acknowledgments is an absolute honour.” Charlevue Bella displays exactly what a Charlevue breeder is all about. She carries bone, length, structure and body with fertility next to none. With these attributes, she is what the modern day international cattle market requires. Behind any good line of cattle are good females, whether it is stud or commercial, which not only have to be correct, but also functional and cost effective. Behind every good bull is a good cow! Charlevue is preparing for the all new Charlevue Invitational Brangus Sale which will be held in Charters Towers on Monday, 2 November 2009. SANTA BULL SALE

Vendors all set for Heartland sale

ROMA SALEYARDS

100 BULLS

The Heartland Group will this year conduct its 17th Annual Sale on the 9th September at the Roma Saleyards.

10 STUD HEIFERS

The sale date has been put back three weeks from previous years to aid potential purchasers as they now buy their bulls closer to their joining times. This year's vendors will cover a wide range of genetics and this will allow buyers the opportunity to buy bulls that will suit any breeding programme from vealers to Jap ox. The participating studs this year will be Talgai, Murgo, Oakdale, Pinaroo, Carntyne, Chilgerrie Hill, Dunrobin and Glenview, along with guest vendors, Cooinda, Tyndale, Baroda, Raytek, Murgona and Brox-J Santas. Unfortunately the season for some members hasn't been kind and this has affected the growth rates of some bulls. However, the genetics are still the same as previous years. This year's offering will consist of approximately 100 bulls and 10 stud heifers. For the benefit of buyers from tick areas, this year's draft will be blooded with three germ, as well as the standard 7 in 1, Vibrio and 3 day inoculations. All bulls will be semen tested and soundness evaluated. The group will also offer free delivery to areas along the major highways - conditions apply. Selling agents this year will be Elders, GDL and TopX, Roma. Anyone requiring a catalogue or further information can contact the agents or chairman, Greg Kroll.

TRURO to host first on-property sale It's all systems go at “Truro” at present as they prepare for their inaugural on-property sale on Tuesday 25th August at “Truro” Bellata at 1pm. On offer will be 35 dehorned Hereford bulls and 5 Poll Hereford bulls, along with two classy heifers by Cootharaba Magnum, and 30 yearling dehorned Hereford steers, accredited under the Red Star Hereford Secure programme. All bulls for this year's sale will be given the most thorough of “goings over” being semen tested and evaluated for soundness, and accredited under the Pfizer star programme. The Pfizer star programme ensures all bulls have been tested and vaccinated twice for Pestivirus, vaccinated twice with 7in1 and vaccinated twice for Vibriosis. All bulls are also offered

with full Breedplan figures. Sires represented in the sale include Moorlands Grand National, Foxforth Valuable, Truro Yogi Bear (Yarram M629), Bowen Vincent, The Rock Top Gun, Toolangatta Impulse, Ironbark Kurrajong T300 and Smithston Zig Zag. Stud principals, Scott and Pip Hann are thrilled with how the bulls are progressing. With recent rains, the bulls are now able to be grazed on winter oats. The Breedplan figures on the bulls reflect the do-ability and performance the cattle are renowned for amongst their commercial bull buyers. The figures show good milk, EMA and IMF along with terrific growth and carcase. The Hanns have been targeting good skin and hair in the sires used in

recent years and this year 's bulls reflect this breeding programme. Truro has made a terrific investment in the future through the purchase of sires and semen including Cootharaba Mendez, Talbalba Vampire, Mawarra Trailblazer, Smithston You Beaut, Cootharaba Magnum and Yalgoo

Booster (P). Truro's breeding criteria is dominated by efficiencies. Whiteface cattle are wellknown and proven to be the most efficient of the British breeds. The selection of sires and replacement females concentrates on a number of factors - structural soundness, fertility, muscle expression, tempera-

ment (very important) and very good skin and hair, which the Hanns believe is critical to an animal's ability to thrive in tough climatic conditions. The Hanns also use and believe in Breedplan as a tool TO ASSIST in the selection of cattle for their breeding programme, with the figures having to stack

up against what the eye can see. Inspection is always welcome at “Truro” and the Hann family look forward to being able to offer this exceptional group of bulls at their Inaugural Sale with delivery free to the nearest major centres, within a 200km radius.

Queensland bred Angus with extra frame and weight gaining abilities whilst retaining all the traditional maternal & carcass qualities

RAFF ANGUS sells “100 of the BEST” After forty four years of dedicated breeding to Angus cattle, the Raff Family will this year present an elite group of yearling Angus Bulls at their “On Property Sale”, Monday 28th of September at Drillham. Established in 1965, the 110 bulls to be catalogued will again be a true endorsement of what the Raffs breeding program has become renowned for - Queensland bred Angus with extra frame and weight gaining abilities whilst retaining all the traditional maternal and carcass qualities. The sale feature will undoubtedly be the cataloguing of the first selection of bulls that have resulted from the importation of frozen embryos from the Hoff Scotch Cap Angus Cows purchased at South Dakota in 2006. These bulls will join an elite group of sale bulls that are regarded by the Raff Family to be the 'pick of the drop' within all bulls born in 2008. Following the Raffs commitment to the beef industry all

bulls sell with generations of Pedigree Documentation, Estimated Breeding Values, Ultrasound Scanning Information, are DNA tested for Marbling, Tenderness and Feed Efficiency Markers and sell with a Two Year Breeding Guarantee. They are also Semen Tested and Breeding Soundness evaluated, blooded for Red Water 3 Germ, and are 3 Day Sickness, Botulisum, Pestigard and 7in1 Vaccinated. All raw data such as weights, daily gains, scrotal size, frame score and scanning information will also be available on sale day for those in attendance. The two key performance indicators used to monitor the carcass qualities of Raff Angus - carcass feedback from abattoirs and live scanning data have always indicated to us that our cattle are at the premium end of the scale for all economically important carcass traits, including marbling. Abattoir feedback tells us that progeny of Raff bulls are consistently in the top 20% of all cattle killed for weight for age, yield and marbling which have been in contradiction to Breedplan EBVs for carcass traits, in particular marbling. With the rapid discovery of an increased number of gene markers to predict an animals genotype for carcass quality we are finding that Raff Angus are now being recognised for their real genetic merit. Hoff Limited Edition, our senior herd sire who has over 300 progeny

recorded in our herd, ranks in the top 10% of the entire Angus breed for marbling at 0.67 under the GeneSTAR MVP ranking. This extraordinarily high ranking is supported by the result of an extensive trial conducted by Angus America and Excel Cooperation, a division of Cargill, who kill in excess of 50,000 head of cattle per day in America. They recently progeny tested a group of leading sires. With the majority being Angus, they included New Design 036, Precision 1680, Scotch Cap and Hoff Limited Edition. Each bull had a minimum of 200 progeny tested and were evaluated for Tenderness, Carcass Value, Feedlot Gain & Efficiency and also Rancher Value (calving ease and weaning weight). Of all bulls tested Hoff Limited Edition SC 594 was first in every trait evaluated.

This competition is evaluated over a grass fed weight gain, feedlot performance, physical judging, carcass evaluation and retail meat yield. 34 pens of all breeds from some of Australia's elite seed stock operations competed in this independently run competition. Yulgilbar is proud to have again won the National Santa Gertrudis Steer trophy for the 3rd year in succession. A strong emphasis is placed on the production of commercially relevant sale bulls. All sale bulls are semen tested by Dr Ced Wise, soundness evaluated and extensively measured. Data provided includes Breedplan, Genestar MVPs, frame scored, scrotal measured, fat, eye muscle and

intramuscular fat measured, along with weight gain. Most importantly, Yulgilbar is passionate about client backup and service, aiming to stay attuned to client's needs and requirements. Conditional free delivery applies to stud cattle purchased. Significant success has been achieved in the show ring from limited showing this year. Lot 1, Yulgilbar Barkley was recently titled Interbreed Champion Bull at Primex, while Lot 2, Yulgilbar Bounty was awarded Reserve Champion Bull at Rockhampton Beef 2009 under strong competition. These females have been pregnancy tested in calf to Warenda Sahara and represent a rare opportunity to acquire stud Yulgilbar females. Strong commercial demand for Santa Angus cross PTIC females has prompted Yulgilbar to offer 120 females at this year's event. These females are sired by High Quality Dulverton Angus bulls and will be of exceptional quality. The sale will be conducted at the "Broadwater Yards", Yulgilbar Station on Friday 4th September. 60 high performing bulls at BCM Vendors involved in the BCM sale have this year catalogued another impressive line of Simmental and Simbrah bulls for their upcoming sale to be held on Monday, August 31 at the Gracemere Saleyards, Rockhampton. The sale will include a line up of 55 bulls from Clay Gully and Meldon Park Studs with invited guest vendors, Billa Park and Yarrayne. Meldon Park Simmentals will again have an outstanding draft, including the first line of poll bulls by the 2006 Brisbane Junior Champion, Meldon Park Achilles. A first class sire, Achilles was also Calf Champion Bull at Rockhampton's Beef 2006. Meldon Park Simmentals has been constantly selling bulls in the central Queensland area for 15 years and more recently has been selling bulls into the greater northern and western areas. Progeny of these bulls are being seen more

at store and fat competitions where they are achieving desirable results. Meldon Park bulls are consistent with their even fat cover and softness, while not sacrificing weight for age which is synonymous with European bred cattle. Stud principals, Rodney and Elisabeth Skene feel these traits are most important when finishing cattle in a grass or feedlot situation. Rob and Viv Laycock established Clay Gully Simmentals in 1981 at Victoria Point, Queensland and later relocated to “Kipper”, at Esk. Since its inception the stud has achieved many accolades including Grand Champion ribbons at the Brisbane Exhibition, Rockhampton Beef Weeks and many local country shows, including steer and carcass competitions. Founded with Dunmore bloodlines followed by their own bred sires, the Laycocks have in recent years added

Barana Xchange, the top priced bull at Peter Cook's Barana Simmental Sale in 2005. Xchange is now producing the current show team including the Grand Champion Bull Clay Gully Agrow and Clay Gully Abdul, the 2007 Senior Champion at the RNA. These two bulls were sold at the BCM sale for $15,000 and $11,000 respectively. At the recent Beef Week 2009 Clay Gully exhibited four bulls and took home three broad ribbons; the Bull Calf Champion with Clay Gully Danehill and the Junior and Grand Champions with Clay Gully Cicero. Commercial success included the Beaudesert Store Show and Sale in March where the Laycock's entered three pens of commercial Simmental cows PTIC. The Laycock's were awarded first and third places and the cows later sold for an average of $1400. The next closest to these

were a pen of Charbray cows which sold for $925. The Laycocks sell around 50 bulls a year at a number of sales including the All Breeds Sale in Rocky, Agrow at Emerald, the Casino Allbreeds Sale and the BCM Sale also in Rocky. Paddock sales are also welcome. Star of Yarrayne's draft will be Yarrayne Bacardi, a very active, big beef machine. He is a multi broad ribbon winner around all the shows, including Senior Grand Champion at Beef 2009. The bulls is out of Zilah, another multi broad ribbon winner. He is poll/scur and has 100% eye pigment. The rest of the draft, includes 3 polls, and are good growth bulls with plenty of muscle and will get out and work. They have been bred in ticky coastal country. A few weeks ago stud principal Robbie Shaw had a Simbrah steer entered in the

local hoof and hook competition. The entry came in third on the hoof and second on the hook. At Beef 2009, Yarrayne took out many prizes, including Senior and Grand Champion Female, also the Breeders Group Sires Progeny and Dams Progeny. Guest vendors, Billa Park will be selling 16 quality purebred Simmental bulls at the sale. With a commitment to breeding functional cattle to suit all types of markets, Billa Park places a huge emphasis on purchasing top quality sires, many of which are top priced, broad ribbon winners. The stud has recently embarked on a breeding programme using South African Simmentals which are renowned for their hair type, colour and structure. This genetic combination is producing some excellent results and is set to create some interest in the years to come.

Improve your crossbreds use a Whiteface bull! A sub-committee of the Hereford Queensland Association has been formed to promote the advantages of using whiteface bulls to achieve MSA compliance in crossbred progeny. The Toowoomba AgShow Sale in September will offer Whiteface bulls of diverse genetic backgrounds from several new and well known vendors. All bulls will be vet checked for fertility and structural soundness, and have growth rates exceeding 1kg/day for two year old bulls. Hereford cattle are

renowned for complying with specifications for a wide range of markets and are increasingly being used in crossbreeding programmes to improve meat quality and MSA compliance. Whiteface cattle have consistently outperformed other British bred cattle for feed efficiency in official trials leading to backgrounders paying top prices for steers and heifers to go into feedlots. In awarding the All Breeds Bull Championship to the Hereford at Beef 09, the American judge indicated he

Some of Australia's leading Santa Gertrudis studs have again joined forces to offer almost 500 bulls over three days in locations that are within easy driving distances of each other. With time at such a premium this is certainly a great opportunity for cattle breeders to look over a large

was selecting for functional cattle that were not high maintenance and would perform best under normal commercial conditions. Catalogues will be available from the selling agents Elders and Landmark with bulls being offered by the Bowen Downs and Oak Tree Studs at Warwick, Davenger Stud at Wellcamp, Tahlan Stud at Texas, Jesco Stud of Warwick and Braelyn Stud Crows Nest and Texas. Further entries are anticipated.

HEREFORD INCREASING MSA COMPLIANCE MSA RESEARCH reveals an across-theboard $1.70/kg advantage at the retail level for MSA-graded product; and abattoirs are now offering premiums for cattle that grade. With their excellent meat quality, Herefords are the ideal crossbreeding choice to help achieve this premium.

number of bulls in a short period. Prospective buyers can be confident of obtaining the bulls they need without the extra costs associated with attending sales that don't follow each other. Over the three days, a wide range of genetics will be available with large numbers of bulls to suit different

buyer preferences, markets and environments. As proof of the quality that was offered in 2008, some of the highest averaging Santa Gertrudis sales were during the Big Red Santa Week. Although this was the case, all sales in the week sold many bulls at low prices, representing the 'value-for-

money' buys that will again be available in 2009. The sales represented in the Big Red Santa Week this year include Dangarfield Santa Gertrudis, Wandoan Santa Gertrudis, Greenup Santa Gertrudis, Rosevale Santa Gertrudis, and Santa Central Sale.

BIG opportunity

Hardigreen Park Lawyer C96 Since its inception in February 1972, Moreton Rolfe's Hardigreen Park Santa Gertrudis Stud, New South Wales has moved continually towards its mantra, "Where Good Santas Get Together". The Stud has steadily sought to buy the best Santas available and have shown them over much of Eastern Australia. Since 2004 Hardigreen Park has used this long established launching pad to embark on an aggressive programme and invest heavily in females to extend its genetic base at sales such as the Pinaroo Reduction Sale, the Kelly Wallah and Santa Park Dispersal Sales and by the private purchase of females from Raytek and Birra Birra studs. At the recent Warenda Reduction Sale, the prefix further widened this base with the purchase of nine poll cows. Six of the acquisitions have calves at foot (5 heifers) and all

were purchased for an average of $4777. Hardigreen Park also bought 100 straws of semen in the proven Warenda Sherlock (P) a class winner from the 2007 Eidsvold Feature Show. Whilst many new bloodlines have been introduced through females, great attention has been paid to the buying of quality sires, which have proved to be high performers. Dangarfield Morocco (P) was purchased in 2004, Glenn Oaks Farmhand and Kelly Wallah Dolicus(PS) in 2005, Wave Hill Z146 (P) and Warenda Rolex in 2006, Glenview Barbados in 2007 along with Glenn Oaks Banker (P) and Sujo Hagan in 2008. All of these bulls have proved themselves as capable of doing the job for which they were acquired. Use has also been made of semen from well regarded bulls.

All these cattle have created a situation where the Stud can offer breeders the opportunity to buy quality and diversified bloodlines now and well into the future. The effect of this expansion on Hardigreen Park can be measured by its strong 2008 Santa Central Sale result, the cattle providing a range of sires suiting the needs and price ranges for all breeders and the recent good show ring performances capped off by Hardigreen Park Longines (Warenda Rolex) who rose from the Junior Champion to the Grand Champion Santa bull and then took out the Supreme Santa Exhibit Award at the 2009 Sydney Royal. This year's weaners are an excellent draft of bull and heifer calves and will ensure the continued forward quality of the herd and the cattle which will become available in 2010.

Committed to commercial improvement Gauging the success of their own genetics in a commercial situation is a high priority for the Adams family of Dangarfield Santa Gertrudis. It is why each year, they take an avid interest in the results they, and their clients, receive at store and prime cattle competitions. Rockhampton's Beef Week turned out to be a highly successful outcome for the stud after taking out Class 11, for a 'Pen of 10 EU Accredited Steers'. The entry were all purebred milk tooth Santa Gertrudis steers, grain assisted for 103 days in the paddock at 'Kingwood', the Adams' Taroom based property. The steers sold for 192 cents/kg or $1224/head at approximately 18 months of age. This achievement follows three consecutive places at the last four Beef Week Prime Cattle Championships with only one pen entered by the family each year. The Taroom Show, which this year featured 85 head of cattle, proved another successful exhibition for Dangarfield with the stud taking home the Champion Pasture Fed Steer title, along with two other Reserve Champion awards, five 1st places and three seconds with the 14 head of cattle they entered. At the 100th Nanango Santa Feature Show, which included over 100 entries, Dangarfield entered 7 bullocks and took home a second and two third place awards. Also at this show the stud exhibited Dangarfield Rattler who went on to win the Junior and Grand Champion Bull awards. Dangarfield Ruby also picked up the Junior Champion Heifer. The Adams family take great pride in the success of their clients. Long term buyers Greg and Debra Tilly who have been using predominantly Dangarfield sires for over 12 years, had great success at this year's Beaudesert All Red Show run by Bartholomew and Co. Accolades included first prize in a Pen of Steers Suitable for Future Trade, which went on to sell for $645 each, second in a Pen of Steers Suitable for Future Trade, which sold for $650 each and second in a Pen of Females Suitable for Breeders, which later sold for $750 each. Another great success was at last year's Brisbane Exhibition where the Lloyd family of Wieambilla Feedlot, Chinchilla entered a con-

signment of Santa Gertrudis steers bred by long term Dangarfield clients, the Christiansen family of Campo Santo, Taroom. The steers took out the Reserve Champion pen of the show and sold for $2.66/kg returning $1704/head. The steers performed extremely well in the Lloyd's feedlot with an average daily weight gain of 2.25kg/day. This year Dangarfield will kick off the Big Red Santa Week. The on-property sale, set for September 21 will commence at 10.30am and will be followed by the Wandoan Santa Sale. The Adams's have catalogued an impressive offering of 100 commercially driven bulls aged from 22 to 36 months. As always, the bulls are fully guaranteed and will be vaccinated for 3-day, 3 germ blood, semen tested and carry Breedplan figures. Also on offer will be a selection of PTIC heifers. A good season has meant that some of the bulls will get through to sale day without any supplementary feeding having occurred in their lives. At present all bulls are grazing on pasture, being buffel grass and leucaena, and will only have minimal preparation before the sale. Again a wide range of genetics is available with over 20 sires represented throughout the draft making it possible for repeat clientele to select new sire acquisitions each year. Over the years Dangarfield has enjoyed a strong return of clients with them coming back year in year out to purchase over 90% of the bulls. “The strong repeat buying power that attends our sale would have to be one of the most talked about aspects that we hear each year,” Ben Adams said.

Dangarfield took home the Champion Grass Fed Bullock at the Taroom Show.

YOUR LIFE BLOOD Glenn Oaks Drayton

Sujo Indigo (P) More exciting changes are planned for the breeds leading multi vendor sale, the Santa Central Sale, Headingly Complex, Clifton on September 23 2009. Pre sale selections are complete and sale instigators are confident that this year's catalogue boasting some 120 classified and herd bulls and 10 'S' females will be even better that previous years. The 2009 offering has again been sourced from Bottle Tree, Cumberland, Dunlop, Fishington, Glen Vista, Glenn Oaks, Glenview, Gralyn, Hardigreen Park, Hillside, Kamawa, Sujo,Tookey Creek and Warenda-Wave Hill. Vendors will again be offering free delivery of bulls from the sale to areas like western Queensland as far north as Longreach, all local areas and many parts of New South Wales. include the $68,000 Glenn Oaks Farmhand, the $35,000 Kelly Wallah Dolicus, Brookside 2946 purchased for $16,000, the impressive Rosevale Ned Y68 ($17,000) and the $28,000 investment, Rosevale Zest Z32 along with Kelly Wallah Yamato. The 2009 fixture will also feature the 'first release' sons of Warenda Rolex. A Rolex son, Hardigreen Park Longines took the Supreme Exhibit and the junior and grand champion at this year's RAS. Bolstering this high profile sire aspirant will be others by such notables as Wave Hill Z 31 (P) purchased at the inaugural 2006 Santa Central Sale and Waco Rally. These breed heavyweights will only cause to compliment the vast array of already proven genetic and market driven bulls that have appeared already in previous sale catalogues such

as Yarrawonga Merchant,Waco Mascot,Yarrawonga Oberg, Wave Hill Lizard, Yarrawonga Latham, Diamond H Frodo, Yarrawonga Marshall and Ockerby and Kelly Wallah Gandalf. Last year the sale recorded the year's highest Santa Gertrudis bull average - $6708 achieved on the back of the breed's second best result of $7133 for classified bulls for the year in a sale where bulls topped at a realistic $27,500. Leading seedstock and commercial enterprises from two states shared in this genetic haul firmly backing the oats prepared catalogue and the unique feeding regime established by the sale instigators. Prominent producers like Eddie Masterton, Wyandotte Station, Greenvale, the Dunn family, Megine, Roma; Rod Purtell, Mugan, Mungindi, NSW and the Perrett

Cattle Company,Tunis, Injune supported the offering. Affordability throughout the sale saw 67 head (62 percent) sell for $4000 or less. Vendors have elected to sell their entire sale drafts at the Santa Central Sale and the entire catalogue are inspected before sale preparation. Cattle are selected on doing ability and softness and all are treated and sale prepared on the same rations and the same clinical treatments. The forthcoming sale team will carry vaccinations for three day sickness, three germ blood, seven in one and will be semen and GeneSTAR tested. Grazing oats is in readiness to prepare the sale team. Last year 34 studs operated securing their seedstock needs. The Santa Central instigators and their member vendors will be an integral part of the annual Big Red Santa Week.

Quality inspected Santa bulls offered at Wandoan The second sale in the Big Red Santa Week promises to features some impressive young sires from some of the breed's renowned studs. Ten studs have banded together to catalogue 70 sires for this year's Wandoan Santa Gertrudis Bulls Sale which will take place on Monday, September 21 commencing at 2pm. All bulls are either classified or quality inspected by the Santa Gertrudis classifier prior to sale. BULLAMAKINKA The Hindle family's Bullamakinka stud is well represented at this year's Wandoan sale with seven classified bulls that are rising two years of age. These bulls will be oats prepared and have been selected for their eye appeal, quiet temperaments, exceptional growth and softness. The first sons of Warenda Random who was purchased for $23,000 will make their debut. Other sires to feature are Swan Hill Morley (P) who was the top priced Swan Hill bull purchased in 2006. Morley is represented for the first time with two excellent growthy young poll bulls. Other sires represented at Wandoan are Strathmore Z218, Kelly Wallah Z100, Dunlop Gothic and Santalands Action. WIGHTFIELDS The Wightfields stud will present 20 rising two year old bulls at the Wandoan Santa Sale. The bulls went onto oats on the 13th June so they should be in good working order by sale day. This year's draft will include 13 polls. Sires represented are Rosevale Matlock W28 (P), Rosevale Francesco Y36(P), Strathmore W156(P) and the first sons of the stud's exciting new sire, Rosevale Zinzan Z8. They have the same explosive growth, muscling and fine tropical coat as their sire who is ranked No 1 for domestic $ index and No 4 for export $ index. The Goodland family is very happy to be part of the Big Red Santa Week as it gives buyers the opportunity to see a large number of bulls over three days. CELAMBA This will be the Celamba stud's second

offering at Wandoan. The stud has purchased females from Rosevale, Yarrawonga Waco, Warenda, Santa Park, Tara, Gyranda, Five Ace and Wightfields studs giving it a broad range of genetics to develop over time. A lot of attention is placed on fertility and temperament in the herd. Any female that is tested empty or is temperamental is culled. This year the females were joined for 15 weeks and returned a 95% pregnancy result. The sires of the five classified two year old bulls are Strathmore W156 (P), Kendara Executioner, Yarrawonga Ridson (PS) and Rosevale Zinzan Z8. All bulls are vaccinated with 3 germ blood, 7in1, vibrio and 3 day and will have a vet examination before sale. They all have full Breedplan EBVs. VALLEYVIEW Valleyview stud has catalogued six bulls for this year's sale comprising two classified and four purebred commercials. Backed by over 30 years of breeding, the bulls on offer have excellent weight gain, length, thickness and good bone. The bulls average 24 months of age and will be soundness evaluated, semen tested and vaccinated for tick fever, 7 in 1 and 3 day prior to sale. Breedplan figures will also be available. Bulls have been prepared on pasture and Lab Lab forage, oats and given limited access to grain pellets. Valleyview sold the top priced commercial bull at last year's sale for $6500 to the Webster family of Wandoan. DEEPBANK The McCord family's “Deepbank” Santa Gertrudis Stud will, hopefully, present eight bulls at the 2009 Wandoan Sale. Seven of the bulls on offer are classified S and one is a herd bull because of black hairs on his face. The sires represented are Rosevale Phoenix W496 (P), Cumberland Zarb Z111 (P), Deepbank P62 by Cumberland Windorah (P) and Deepbank P33 by Greenup Francesco X786. All bulls have been treated for 7 in 1, 3 day, vibrio, 3 germ blood and semen tested. Recognising the 21st Century market

need for polled cattle, the McCords are continuing to use polled bulls in the stud herd and seven of the bulls on offer are polled. They are also focusing on structural soundness and good temperament in their cattle. The Wandoan Sale bulls from Deepbank meet the standard they aim to present; their growth and appearance are pleasing and the McCords are proud of their 2009 draft. DUNAIRD Dunaird Santa Gertrudis Stud established in 1989 and based at Tara will be selling exclusively at the Wandoan Santa Gertrudis Bull sale on Monday 21st September 2009. Stud Principal Denis Sommerfeld will be offering 3 “S” bulls, the progeny of Kendara Tyrant and Dangarfield Notation. Denis purchased the entire Santa Gertrudis herd of Zane and Lesley Hoey, “Santalea”, Clifton in 2003 to boost the poll genetics of the Dunaird stud. In 2004, Dunaird Knockout (Big Sur BH57) sold to “Birra Birra” stud, Thallon for $21,000 at the Western Red Sale - Roma. DUNDEE Duncan and Kym McMaster were well supported at last year's show with their offering averaging $4000. This year six quality herd bulls are being prepared for Wandoan. Dundee's commercial clients are keen to put muscle and weight for age improvements into their herd and repeat buyers have been impressed by the fertility of the bulls, their temperament and their doing ability. All Dundee bulls, including the show team, are prepared on oats and summer forage and not grain. The McMasters have made a real effort to select for easy doing cattle that have good feet and high fertility, three things that can be affected by too much grain. LOCH-RANZA The Nock family of “Loch-Ranza”, Biggenden will offer one classified S bull sired by Rosevale X-hibition X734. They first used a Santa bull in 1960 over Hereford cows in commercial herds with

bulls from Eidsvold Station, Gyranda and Craiglea studs. A number of Brahman bulls were used over the next 15 years however a Santa bull was used at all times giving the Nocks straight Santa and Santa cross cattle. In 1978 they registered the Loch-Ranza stud. Since then bulls have been purchased from Kabunga West, Yarrawonga-Waco, Rosevale, Diamond H & Deepbank studs. Ian and Alan have purchased cows from Tara, Pinaroo, Yarrawonga Waco and Warenda female sales. THE DOON Fertility, growth rate and carcase quality is of utmost importance in The Doon's breeding programme. Bill and Gretchen Speed are committed to breeding practical cattle for commercial cattleman and will this year offer another impressive draft of bulls at Wandoan. In past years bulls have sold to western and northern regions and all have withstood the climatic and environmental conditions well. Clients can buy bulls with confidence knowing they will go out and do the job year after year. BREMERVALE Bremervale stud will offer 8 classified bulls at Wandoan. This year will see the first of Waco Sebastian's ($32,000) progeny for sale. He is represented by two growthy young bulls, lead by Bremervale Quickdraw, who has won many championships at local shows as well as 4th in a large class at Beef 2009. Other sires represented are Noralla Encosta, Rosevale Puggles W102, Rosevale Fixall A758 and Waco Rylstone (P). The Wainwright family have been breeding Santa Gertrudis for over 50 years and now run 700 purebred Santa breeders. The bulk of the progeny are finished in the family's own feedlot and sold to the highly competitive Woolworths market. The goal is to breed thick set, growthy and highly fertile bulls. All bulls have been semen tested, had all their inoculations and sell with Breedplan figures.

Versatility a plus for the Polls For generations Poll Herefords have been used extensively in breeding herds throughout the nation and continue to gain momentum as a breed for the future. Renowned for their meat quality, feed efficiency and yield, they are a breed that can make a considerable difference to your breeding programme regardless of whether they are used in a straight, or cross breeding operation. As Paul Weir of Kie Ora stud states, “Poll Hereford cattle have a lot to offer. That Poll article has the potential to go on and make a huge impact in a cross breeding operation. As a terminal sire they are fantastic; they will produce an amazing F1 cross that will achieve a terrific result at the other end.” Take a drive into the west and it is the Poll Herefords that have stood the test of time. It is where the breed is recognised for their resilience and is proof of their ability to perform under harsh environmental extremes.

Fertility, temperament and ease of handling are all of major importance and play a vital role in the delivery of a top quality eating product. British breeds, such as Poll Herefords, are gaining recognition for a number of traits including tenderness, flavour and overall eating quality, and these are all traits that are of top priority to beef consumers. This gives the breed the edge and certainly makes them an appealing option when looking for a way to meet the market. The Roma Invitation Poll Hereford

Sale will feature 75 bulls that possess the genetics required to meet your commercial or stud objectives. Five vendors who are all committed to the Poll Hereford breed, and determined to present bulls able to meet your individual requirements, will sell at this year's sale. The genetics on offer will feature bulls from Kalem, Kie Ora, Trefoil Park, Wararba Park and Lambert; all long time supporters of this premiere sale. As always, the bulls will be presented in excellent working condition

and are certain to get the job done. All bulls are soundness evaluated, semen tested, fat scanned and EMA measured. Breedplan figures will be available. So if you are looking for a breed of cattle that will make a valuable contribution, don't dismiss a Poll Hereford. With so many positives, Paul Weir believes they are certainly worthy of your consideration. “In the paddock they deliver results; on the hook they deliver dollars and at the end of the day that's where it counts.”

Hazeldean to offer 180 bulls at Jackson Hazeldean Angus and Senegus will be cataloguing a larger number of bulls this year in response to last years successful sale where the stud achieved an excellent result averaging an impressive $4000 per head across the Angus and Senegus. A feature of this year's drop of sale bulls is the high 600 day growth figures with 90%of auction bulls above breed average for this trait that is vital to northern producers. Stud principal Mr Jim Litchfield said although the standard of this year's bulls was higher than the 2008 draft he was expecting the average price to be down a little in view of the significantly increased offering. With the vast major-

ity of last year's bulls selling between $2500 and $4000 there are bulls for everyone's pocket. This year's sale will again take place at the Pinora Sales complex at Jackson, just north of the highway and 80kms east of Roma. Free delivery to major centres within 1000km of the sale will be available. Mr Litchfield stressed that all bulls are unconditionally guaranteed by the vendor for 12 months. “We realize that there is a significant investment in time and money when purchasing bulls and the worst thing for a long term business like ours is to have a client dissatisfied with his acquisition. So we ensure only

the soundest bulls are put up for sale and have them all independently structurally assessed. However in addition to this we cover our bulls for 12 months and longer if circumstances dictate.” The Hazeldean program has long been based on functional cattle and any visitor who has travelled south to the home of Hazeldean's cattle operations on the Monaro and Riverina will soon realize that this is not the soft picture book country with cattle in knee deep clover 8 months of the year. “The reality is unfortunately very different.” said Mr Litchfield. “And I guess the positive comments cattleman make about our stock when they get them home is testi-

mony to the adverse conditions they run under here for the most part. Only the thrifty and gritty survive here!”

Murray Grey bulls that will perform This year's 5 star sale at the Wandoan Saleyards on Friday August 28th at 11am showcases more progeny of the late Monterey Sensational. His sons were highly sought after at last year's sale achieving the top sale price of $7500 as well as filling the next three top prices. At just 24 months of age Sensational weighed in at an impressive 946kg of meat with a huge EMA and, is a trait leader for 200, 400 and 600 day growth. He is putting all of these traits into his sons. Added bonuses for choosing Murray Greys are their superb temperament which affects all facets of beef breeding from paddock to plate; and their versatility to target all markets in times of drought, which has never been more advantageous. Other benefits are their hardiness, fertility, supreme carcase traits, feed efficiency and the most tender, tasty beef available. THE ULTIMATE The Ultimate Murray Greys, based at Condamine, is offering 12 bulls at this year's 5 Star Sale. This is the strongest line of bulls they have had to date representing not only top sires but elite female genetics. In the past year stud principals, Tim and Pauline Perkins have introduced a new stud sire into their herd. Monterey Chrome Lad, purchased in WA in

Champion Sensational steer. February, was chosen for his natural thickness and great temperament, a bull with quality throughout and real sire appeal. This was in addition to Monterey Tremendous, purchased in May 2008, whose first calves are impressing. The month of May presented the Perkins with a chance to showcase their end product by providing meat to the Stonegrill Restaurant at Beef 2009 and Hampton Food & Wine Festival where it was raved about for its taste and tenderness. For further details on The Ultimate herd please contact Tim and Pauline Perkins who will only be more than happy to assist you with your enquiry. GLENGOWER Since beginning their stud in 1989, Kev and Tricia Vayro's aim has been to principally breed bulls that produce a calf with a moderate birthweight, that is growthy from then on, possesses a quiet nature and is considered a hardy doing animal. With these methods in place their young commercial cattle have been keenly sought by discerning butchers, consistently bringing top price. Kev and Tricia Vayro look forward to seeing you at their upcoming sale on August 28 and welcome your enquiry.

An outstanding draft of 28 top quality Murray Grey bulls have been catalogued for the 12th annual 5-Star Sale set down for Friday 28th August 2009, at the Wandoan Saleyards. Commencing at 11.00am, the sale is to be conducted by Grant, Daniel and Long. The four vendors give a fertility guarantee on all their bulls and each bull will have a veterinary soundness evaluation as well as weight, fatness and EMA details available on sale day. Members of the sale group have been involved in some interesting activities during the last 12 months, particularly highlighting the superior meat quality of Murray Grey cattle and their crosses. Murray Greys have a well established reputation for the tenderness and flavour of their beef, demonstrated by winning numerous Taste Test competitions, having very high Genestar tenderness results and being sought after by many butchers. The major beef industry event in Queensland during 2009 has undoubtedly been BEEF 2009 at Rockhampton in early May. Three of the vendor studs exhibited cattle in the stud cattle classes, with first-time exhibitors Kev and Trish Vayro from Glengower and Tim and Pauline Perkins from The Ultimate stud gaining some placings, and longstanding exhibitors David and Sally Taylor from Baroona Park winning Junior Champion Female with Baroona Park Juliette. Two steers from The Ultimate stud made a big impression on visitors to the Murray Grey trade site during the week. These steers were out of a group of steers that were bred and raised by Tim and Pauline Perkins to provide the beef for the Murray Grey beef day at the Stonegrill Restaurant at Beef 2009. This day at the Stonegrill Restaurant

28

was an outstanding success with over 900 meals being served, with all of the beef items on the menu being sourced from the purebred Murray Grey steers from The Ultimate. The comments from the diners at the restaurant were highly complimentary, with "the best beef I have ever tasted" and "great beef, where can we get some more?" being frequently expressed. This event clearly demonstrated the superior eating quality of Murray Grey beef. Some more of "The Ultimate" beef from the steers was utilised at the Murray Grey stand at The High Country Food and Arts Festival held on 17 May at Hampton near Toowoomba. Eye fillet steak burgers and gourmet beef pies made from 100% Murray Grey beef, together with organic sausages sourced from a registered organic beef property with a predominantly Murray Grey cattle herd were sold at the stand. The response from the public was again outstanding, with the queue at the Murray Grey stand being the longest at the Festival and the beef being sold out by 2.30pm. Feedback from the people eating the steak, sausages or pies was again very complimentary and therefore satisfying for the Murray Grey breeders manning the stand. It is clear from the above examples that cattle producers who are interested in improving the quality of the beef they are turning off, should consider using a Murray Grey bull in their breeding program. The 5 Star Murray Grey Bull Sale at Wandoan provides a great opportunity to acquire a quality-improving bull at moderate cost.

The rise of a new beginning ward to a new chapter in their operation. Having retained half the Kendara herd, the Muller family will continue to produce quality tropical red cattle which are aimed at both the stud and commercial markets. Traits that have always been of priority include fertility, muscling, thickness, higher than average EMAs and ideal fat cover. As Ken explains, “If we can get those attributes right in our cattle then they will then go on and produce the

best weight gainers and top feed converters for our clients, and that's our priority.” The Muller 's have never focused solely on one particular trait in their breeding programme and instead have been committed to producing cattle with a lot of breed character, with tidy sheaths, are big boned and carry plenty of meat. A commitment to increasing the EMA score in the Muller's herd has been carried out in recent years and is delivering promis-

ing results. The sale draft has delivered excellent scores in this area and all carry plenty of beef. Preparations are well underway for the Muller's Inaugural KM Cattle Company Bull Sale which will take place on-property at Kendara on Thursday, August 27, 2009. The line up includes 70 bulls comprising 50 Classified S bulls with the balance being herd bulls. Ken said the draft was doing well and included a mix of tremendous

poll and horned bulls. “The bulls had been running on a crop of Sugar Drip sorghum and are now on a silage ration. They are coming along well and will be presented in excellent working condition. There are five outstanding poll bulls and some very impressive horned sires too,” he said. Lot 1, Red Rock Action 13, sired by KENDARA ULTRASONIC and Lot 2 Kendara Zinger 5040 (P), sired by DUNDEE LARRIKEN (P), are two outstanding bulls leading the KM sale draft. Both were used as yearling sires within the herd. “These were two young bulls that we thought highly of so we decided to use them in last year's joining programme. They are big bulls that have plenty of potential and I am looking forward to seeing their first drop of calves in a few months time,” Ken said. From a commercial perspective, the KM steers have been delivering excellent results over the hook. The Muller 's have been turning off milk/two tooth steers to Teys Bros, which are dressing 300 to 340kg and grading MSA. “We've been getting really pleasing feedback with our steers and we consider this to be testament to our breeding programme,” Ken stated. Probably the issue that gives the Muller's the most satisfaction is the success of their clients. Long time clients, the Redden family of “Point Lookout”, south of Roma, have been using the Kendara bloodlines exclusively for the past 10 years. Mick Redden states that it is imperative to get the basics right in order to produce a superior breeding product and acknowledges the Kendara genetics for setting the foundation of his own operation. Mr Redden credits the Muller's cattle for their reliable fertility and excellent growth which has seen him turn off quality lines of grass and oats fed steers direct to works which have fetched premium prices of up to $1200 per head. Another client based in far North Queensland, Ross Blennerhassett has been using Kendara bulls in his stud operation at Goshen Station, 90km south of Mt Garnet on the Herbert River. The Blennerhassett family runs two separate breeder herds; one Brahman, the other Santa Gertrudis, with an objective of maintaining a Brahman content of about five-eighths which is believed to suit the country. The Kendara bulls have been used in both the stud and commercial herds and have stood up well in the harsh environment. Mr Blennerhassett believes Santa Gertudis play a very important role in his operation when it comes down to meat quality and has been able to monitor the outcome through the family's own abattoir which supplies beef to a number of local butchers and supermarkets in the region. The Muller family look forward to welcoming you to Kendara on Thursday, 27 August for the first KM Cattle Company Bull Sale and welcome your enquiry.

Crathes to compliment quality Noller Charolais Sale Crathes Charolais are excited to be an invited vendor for the fourth consecutive year at the Noller Charolais Bull Sale to be held on October 1 this year at “Mutiny Point, Wandoan and will be offering a quality line up of five bulls and five heifers. Crathes Charolais was founded in 2002 by Keith and Roz Glasson who selected their base genetics from Noller Charolais, Goonadoo, Rosedale , Palgrove and Advance bloodlines. Having since added leading genetics from all over the world, Crathes Charolais has created an excellent balance of French and Australian genetics such that it is now a small but extremely elite Charolais breeding enterprise

producing the “best females to breed the best bulls to meet customer needs. “Our breeding objectives at Crathes have been developed through a close connection with Jeff and Lynn Noller, and a long family history in the commercial cattle industry. We are committed to ensuring that we cover all important traits with good balance so that our progeny are structurally sound, have high performance, are of low maintenance, expressing adequate muscling and we have a sharp focus to softness and finish with the ability to fatten on pasture from weaning, Roz said. “Years of experience has also taught us that females are the backbone to any successful breeding enterprise therefore we are pedantic about

ensuring we select breeders with excellent milk, great temperament, strong maternal instincts, proven family fertility and with top lines, volume, hind quarters and hip to pin ratios second to none, Keith added. Thus far, as measured by their peers and astute cattlemen, Crathes has enjoyed great results through its short life with recent show successes from Sydney to Rockhampton. These have included Interbreed Champion Female at Lismore in 2008, Champion Calf Female at Toowoomba Royal in 2009, Champion Junior Female at 2009 Sydney Royal, Champion Junior female at Beef 2009 in Rockhampton with Crathes bulls taking ribbons at most venues they are shown including Reserve Junior Champion at Toowoomba Royal 2009 and two at Beef Week 2009. More importantly customers have measured Crathes progeny by bidding to lift the average price of Crathes bulls and females to the very top end of every sale they are offered.

This year Sandon Glenoch Angus, Chinchilla, has catalogued 95 bulls to be offered at their 18th annual on-property sale on Wednesday August 12. Bulls that work, is the belief of Sandon Glenoch Angus (SGA) and covers all bases from fertility, performance data, adaptation and customer satisfaction. Their breeding philosophy for their 400 females is that they must calve in their calving period every year, and SGA support their claims with average calving intervals and number of calves each female has had. SGA's breeding objectives are based on a balanced approach and in order to satisfy a diverse range of requirements, they also produce many

New venue and new sale date for Noller Charolais “It would have to be their temperament, weight for age and easy doing ability,” says Dysart beef producer, Ted Murphy when asked what attributes he likes about Noller Charolais. “They are all important traits in our breeding programme and they are certainly meeting our expectations.” whose cattle have gone on to make a significant mark on his operation. Crossing the Charolais bulls over his Brahman females have produced what he describes as an excellent, functional first cross

As one of Jeff and Lynn Noller 's oldest clients, it's these sorts of comments that give them the assurance they need with their breeding programme. With 350 breeders, a passion for Charolais cattle, and a commitment to the future of Australia's beef industry, they are determined to continue breeding quality cattle that will go on to make a lasting impression. For close to 40 years the Noller family has been associated to Charolais cattle and in that time their passion and vision for the breed has never wavered. It was Jeff 's father Des who founded Gunnadoo Charolais back in 1972 and since his passing in 1986, it has been Jeff 's intention to continue highlighting the benefits of this great breed. Jeff and Lynn founded Noller Charolais, based at Delga Park, Wandoan in 2004 following the dissolution of the family partnership. In that time they have worked tirelessly to rebuild their female herd and further develop the herd genetics through the use of a number of high performing Full French sires. This year's sale will feature 60 bulls and 20 females and will be held at their new venue at “Mutiny Point”, Wandoan on 1st October. The Noller's have invited guest vendors, Crathes Charolais to partake who will catalogue a number of high performing bulls. “It's certainly a time of change for us. Firstly we've put our sale date back in a bid to present the bulls with a bit more age. We believe they will be in better condition than what they would be in August. Secondly, we're preparing for our first on-property sale at our new property “Mutiny Park”, which is located 30km north of Wandoan, and 30km south of Taroom on the Leichhardt Highway.” Jeff said the bulls had been doing well and featured some top young sires, including the first sons of Sedalia Zooloo DEG Z20F, a Full French son of Nelson, who was purchased at the National Sale in 2007 for $14,000. Zooloo's progeny are early maturing, with good muscle yet are able to finish well. Other notable bulls are those by Burradon Talisman, another Full French sire, whose progeny are really strong, well fleshed bulls with tremendous growth. Females by Talisman possess excellent milk traits and good utter development. Jeff said his breeding programme focused on producing moderate framed, easy keeping cattle that were able to lay down fat with ease while still maintaining good muscle development. “What we love about Charolais cattle is their temperament, their tremendous weight gain and their flexibility; they are all important components to ensure you can produce a terrific result on the plate and that's what we're here to do,” he said. As for Ted Murphy, he will continue to support the Nollers

Cattle for growth, eye muscle and IMF Carabar Angus was established in 2001 by the Hegarty's at Meandarra. Their aim is to produce cattle suitable for most markets with a strong focus on structural soundness, growth, eye muscle and IMF. Foundation females have been purchased from some of Australia's leading studs to establish a strong female bloodline. These females include fully imported embryos Lawson's V1037, V457 and X77. V1037 was a top priced cow at Lawson's 2004 sale. Another stud female is Booroomooka T4, an imported embryo from Summitcrest USA. Other females and embryos have been pur-

chased from other leading studs Comfort Hill, Kansas Angus and Raff Angus. Stud cattle were shown for the first time this year. C24 was champion Angus heifer at North Coast National Show Lismore and was also Champion Angus female at Wandoan, and came third at Rockhampton. C 12 was Champion Senior Angus Bull at Wandoan and third at Rockhampton and will be offered for sale at Ag show in Toowoomba. C55 was Champion Angus Bull at Wandoan and a second at Rockhampton. This year 2 bulls will be selling at Ag show and 10 at the Balonne Invitation

Bull Sale at Nindigully. 30 bulls are available for private sale. Last year bulls were sold to clients at Goondiwindi, Mungindi, Dirranbandi, St George, Cunnamulla, Augathella, Surat, Condamine, Tara and to local producers. The stud cows at Carabar have been joined or flushed to some of the breeds' top sires including New Design 1407, Yellowstone, Ultravox, Neutron, Stockman, W109 and Hoff Limited Edition. Carabar Angus has recently purchased a future stud sire, The Grange Wheelwright D6, in conjunction with Kansas Angus. Semen will be available from Agri-Gene.

Bulls that don't go backwards Minlacowie and Wingfield Droughtmasters, run by the Spann family, are situated on a number of properties in the Callide Valley. The studs, featuring around 650 registered females, have earned a reputation as one of the breed's leading operations, breeding stud Droughtmaster's for 45 years. The studs are strongly commercially orientated, running a commercial breeder herd in excess of 300. The two studs have put together another outstanding line up of bulls for the Droughtmaster National Sale on September 15 and 16. One of the team leaders in this year's draft of 45, pictured in the neighbouring advertisement, is an outstanding son of Minlacowie Appache, Wingfield Everardo. He will sell as a ¾ share with full possession with the studs retaining semen for within herd use. Also featuring in this year's draft is a number of top class first season son's of Billabong Nebo. Nebo is a grandson of Wingfield Boris and is doing a fantastic job for the studs. There are a number of very good sires once again by

Billabong Julius Ceasar. Ceasar sired last year's top priced Droughtmaster bull, Minlacowie Lexington ($100,000) and to date his sons are averaging at auction in excess of $13,000. Again, another draft of bulls is being prepared for the Capricorn Droughtmaster Sale to be held in September, and October's Charters Towers sale which will be led by Minlacowie Macleod, an outstanding son of Billabong Mandrake. The bulls aren't given any special treatment after weaning, or in the lead up to their sale preparation. They are weaned and turned onto pasture to fend for themselves. They only come in about 120 days prior to sale for their sale preparation. The bulls develop a natural strong constitution and will usually thrive wherever they go. The Studs have a large number of repeat cliental and a very frequent comment is, “Your bulls don't go backwards.” The studs are also preparing to sell 8 heifers which will be on offer at GDL's 2 up sale, on July 27th. Keep watching the website for sale photos and updates.

Riverglen = Performance The Riverglen Charolais offering at their 24th annual bull sale at the Roma Saleyards will comprise of proven performers ready to work. An catalogue of 70 rising two year old Charolais bulls will be offered on Wednesday 16th September, at 11 am. The paddock prepared bulls will be semen tested, fat and muscle scanned, and vaccinated with 7 in 1, 3-germ, 3-day and vibrio. The Riverglen Charolais breeding program began with an AI program in 1971 and resulted in 98 first cross calves being born to Santa Gertrudis, Hereford and crossbred cows. The first Riverglen purebred calves were born in November 1978. The Riverglen herd now consists of 350 purebred breeders alongside a Santa/Hereford crossbred herd in which the stud's Charolais bulls are used as terminal sires. The progress of their breeding program has been monitored through assessing Charolais beef at the Sullivan's butcher shop in Brisbane for 17 years, and by competing in prime beef and carcase competitions. Some more recent highlights in these competitions include: Beef 2006 National Carcase Competition - Champion Carcase; Royal Qld Show

2007 Coles Local Trade Competition Champion Carcase, and Royal Qld Show 2008 Grassfed Jap Ox competition Champion Carcase. Riverglen's Charolais herd is run with a commercial focus. All bulls and females are run and prepared for sale in the paddock. All animals of the same class are run as one group which leads to a more accurate performance recording system, which gives the stud and their clients an effective selection tool. Riverglen has been involved in Breedplan since its inception and prior to that used weaning and yearling ratios to aid in selection. The Sullivan's philosophy of fertility, productivity and longevity run under commercial conditions is where they are heading for. With the introduction of four impressive new sires to the Riverglen herd in the last two seasons the Sullivan's are confident their breeding program will continue to improve and meet the challenges ahead. New genetics make their debut at Baroola Making their debut at the upcoming Baroola Charolais and Charbray Bull Sale will be the first sons of the impressive sires, Rosedale Zanny, Rosedale Zambi and Palgrove Zonate. Purchased in 2006 for their tremendous length, muscle, structure and fat cover, the offering is sure to impress. The Freeman family will this year host their 23rd Annual on-property bull sale on Friday, August 28. The catalogues this year boasts 45 Charolais and 10 Charbray bulls aged between 20 and 24 months. Other sires represented at this year's sale include Gobongo Uralla, Moongool Yellow Pages, Baroola Zygote and Moongool Yoghurt. With the addition of the Rosedale and Palgrove bloodlines, buyers can be guaranteed of a wide cross section of genetics. Stud principals, Neville and Scott Freeman said they were extremely pleased with the bulls on offer, making particular mention of the

debuting sires. “The three bulls we purchased in 2006 took our eye because of their structural correctness. They boast the qualities we like in terms of length, muscle and fat distribution and we're pleased to see these traits have been passed onto their offspring,” Neville said. The bulls have been prepared in the paddock after going onto an oats crop in mid June. They have also been fed a silage based supplement. Principal Neville Freeman began breeding

Charolais cattle in 1973, and soon after this began selecting sires with fat cover along with other desirable traits like early to mid maturity, sound structure, good fertility and quiet temperament. There is over 30 years of breeding fat cover into the Baroola herd so buyers can be sure this important genetic trait is well and truly ingrained in the bulls on offer. The sale draft has been vaccinated with 7 in 1, 3 day, vibrio and 3 germ blood. Of special interest this year is a $500 lucky buyer's draw and also a $100 fuel voucher attendee draw. The Freemans are also offering free delivery to purchasers of five bulls or more. Prior inspection of the bulls can be arranged with a phone call to Neville and Carol Freeman on 07 4623 0285 or Scott and Lisa Freeman on 07 4622 2697 or 07 4626 1855. Thornleigh Herefords will mark 57 years of continuous stud breeding in 2009 with its 33rd Annual on-property Bull and Female Sale which will be held on Wednesday 19th August 2009. The sale will see a great cross-section of the world's most productive and predictable genetics. The Monie family has put great emphasis on keeping the genetic base from which they operate as wide as possible and this has necessitated a constant search and use of the best Australian and North American bloodlines. Modern Herefords are the ideal compliment for producers who recognise the benefits of cross-breeding; they add performance and profitability to all herds through low production costs. This is achieved through optimum fertility levels, low maintenance requirements and excellent feed conversion on both grass and grain.

A commercial focus at Heitiki The economical end of the beef industry is based around cattle that can meet market specifications without chewing up all the profits. Heitiki is very proud of its ability to supply a reliable product that will go out and work having not been feed up to the eye balls. These bulls know how to graze. The best attribute of an on farm sale, as held at Heitiki, is that the bulls are not involved in a feeding competition. Stud principals, John and Tim Lloyd use, and offer their clients, breed plan information and have all bulls vet inspected, including semen and morphology testing, prior to sale day. They believe the greatest attribute to their operation is the selection of moderate

sized, efficient cattle that are not bred with the interbreed show ribbon in mind. Their commitment has always been to breed cattle fit for the commercial cattle industry, which is a pivotal part of their own operation. On Thursday, 3rd September the annual Heitiki On-Farm Production sale will be held at 'Heitiki', Delungra, in the Inverell district. The 2009 catalogue will include 40 Bulls, 15 Heifers and a line of commercial Droughtmasters.

Enquiries should be made to John or Tim Lloyd at Heitiki 02 6724 8225 or 02 6724 8362 or Email: timothy.lloyd@bigpond.com

At the end of the day it all comes back to profit, and at Elite Poll Herefords, the objective is to produce growthy cattle that comply with the higher returning targets of processing grids. As stud principal, Kay Payne explains her breeding program factors in the entire carcase, not just one particular trait, to ensure greater profits for her clients. “Although our carcase selection is a total package, it is the positive fat that assists with pasture finishing and the superior muscling that assists with yield. The IMF, combined with our renowned quiet temperament cattle, results in a top quality eating product, she said.” While an emphasis is placed on calving ease and muscling, Kay says it is important to realize that selection of male and

females that produce easily born progeny doesn't necessarily mean light calves with no growth potential. “Our heifers can deliver 40+kg calves if the season is good and these calves are bred to have the growth potential of the top 10% of the breed. That is, our heifer's calves are genetically our best and are certainly not the normal industry “discards” because of low growth and size. By increasing calving ease there are more calves to sell, more dams that go back into calf, less labour needed in supervision, so ultimately, more profits for clients,” she said. At Elite Poll Herefords, the herd is run as a commercial operation with selection aided by EBVs. Selling to a range of markets including both domestic and export, MSA and the EU, has

ensured Elite bulls can reproduce for these specific markets. For many years the stud has supported local schools by donating steers so students can prepare them for carcase competitions, including the Sydney Royal Show. In the last 12 months six steers have been prepared and together averaged a creditable 85 points, including silver and bronze medal awards, which demonstrates the stud's consistency and success in herd selection. This year 33 bulls, most with Market $Indexes in the top 20% of the breed or better, will be offered at the stud's on-property sale to be held on Thursday, 3 September. Further details can be obtained by contacting Kay Payne on 02 6545 8135 or via email at elitepollherefords@bigpond.com

Paringa - different from the rest

We’ve done the searching for you...

Paringa Charolais are renowned for their easy doing and quiet nature with true calving ease, growth, muscle and the ability to marble. Nearly all bulls are polled. To substantiate these claims, check out Paringa's ranking on the national database for carcase, growth and fertility. Most of the top domestic indexing Charolais bulls are bred by Paringa while also ranking highly on the Export Index.

To search the Charolais database for Paringa's top indexing cattle go to www.paringalivestock.com.au and click on Charolais Link. Overall the Paringa herd excels in softness (fat cover so finish faster), low birth weight and short gestation, large scrotal size (more live calves) whilst maintaining breed average for growth and muscle (weight still pays).

The result of these superior breed characteristics is evident in recent successes in the commercial market as well as on a seed stock and stud level using Paringa genetics. Weaners recently sold by the renowned Magee family at Greta broke records when 10 month old steers sired by Paringa Vanguard averaged 465kg at Wodonga. “These cattle had phenomenal weights for weaners and good fat cover. Buyers from all over could not believe the weights of these weaners,” Christine Magee said. “Over the two day sale, which had a total yarding of 8000 cattle, these weaners were the heaviest, even heavier than the 18 month old cattle that sold the previous day,” Christine added.

At this year's Sydney Royal, the son of Paringa Novotel A100, owned by Rosedale Charolais won Grand Champion Bull, Supreme Beef Breed Championship and the Hordern Trophy. Judge Stephen Branson commented on the Hordern win, “It really was a very close decision. Several of the groups were outstanding. It was a very high quality line up and hotly contested. The Charolais cattle as a group ticked the most boxes in terms of body structure, structural soundness and their performance. They just made a very powerful impact.” All Paringa calves are weighed at birth with tight conception (6 week joining) which means very accurate data. All females calve at two years.

Paringa Charolais are the ultimate terminal breed for all Bos Taurus and Indicus based females, as they calve well, grow and taste great! For further information contact Tom and Olivia Lawson www.paringalivestock.com.au. Ph 0434 146 795 or 03 5797 2743, 96 Creeds Rd, Yea, Victoria 3717.

A RED at the Top at Beef 09 For the second consecutive time the Galloway family of Duarran walked away with the accolade of Grand Champion Brangus Bull at Beef Australia. At Beef 2006, Duarran Yabbone created history and a lot of interest from all cattlemen when he won the Grand Championship. Yabbone was then sold for an Australian record price of $45,000 to the Hicks family of “Billabong”, Moura. Then came Duarran Bambrick, a very stylish two and a half year old who was much admired by Droughtmaster, Santa Gertudis and Brahman breeders who were greatly impressed by his thickness, muscling, smoothness of fleshing and great growth, and weight for age. Bambrick is entering the AI centre for semen collection for Australian and overseas and then will remain at Duarran for stud duties.

Duarran will be offering a great line of bulls at this year's sale. The Galloway family has invited some of their clients to sell Red Brangus in conjunction with them at Gracemere on Tuesday, 29 September. The Galloways will present 45 bulls at the Classic Red Sale in Rockhampton which will include a great line of the older two year old bulls. At the Duarran, Roma sale to be held on Wednesday, 21 October, 45 Red Brangus, 15 Black Brangus and 20 Red Angus bulls will be put forward for your consideration. Leading stud sire prospects will be split up for both sales and all the bulls are said to be shaping up well.

Generational commitment to Droughties would be suited to either a stud or commercial operation and we're confident they will deliver excellent results down the track. These are two bulls that have just got better and better and in hindsight we believe we should have included them in the show team,” Deleece said. The balance of the sale draft includes some very handy sons of Billabong Jackpot, Mungalla Million, Glenland Eliott and Minlacowie Hannibal. Bulls will be aged between 24 and 30 months of age. Deleece said the bulls were coming along very well in the paddock with the assistance of Rocky Custom feed. “We are really pleased with the condition of the bulls; there are some very handy bulls

AgGrow in July and created quite a bit of interest. “Enquiry has certainly been strong and naturally we're thrilled because we take a lot of pride in our cattle. We're interested to hear what people have to say and take it all on board in a bid to improve,” Deleece added.

RONDEL SUCCESS Showing is a relatively new component to the Rondel operation and is something that has been initiated by Luke and Lakisha, who get great satisfaction in displaying their stock to the public. In 2006 the highlight for Rondel was definitely at Beef Australia where the stud claimed Calf Champion Female, Reserve

COMMERCIAL INTEREST

WHAT'S ON OFFER IN 2009? The National Droughtmaster Sale will feature 14 high performing bulls from the Rondel stud, 13 of which are registered. Leading the draft will be Rondel Lion King, a full brother to the multiple broad ribbon winner, Rondel King Kong. Lion King possesses the same traits his brother has; is a long thick bull, structurally correct with plenty of depth. Another stand out sire is Rondel Lazarus, a son of Cungelella Kramer. He is a truly outstanding bull described as very long, well muscled and with a beautiful sheath. “These are two superior bulls that we believe have the potential to go far. They

with Rondel Monopoly, a yearling bull sired by Minlacowie Hannibal, taking out the Male Reserve Calf Champion. It is anticipated this impressive young bull will be offered for sale next year. Probably what was more exciting for the Carrington family at Beef Week was the sale of their heifer, Rondel Madonna. The heifer, the result on an embryo programme, was sired by Glenlands Hatch and out of the stud's well known female, Rondel Holly, a multiple broad ribbon winner who excelled at Beef 2006. Madonna is the first ever female to be sold by the stud and set a new Australian Droughtmaster record for an unjoined heifer, selling for $20,000 to the Vitwood Droughtmaster stud. “Vitwood were familiar with Madonna's dam, Holly and believed she would be a valuable asset to their stud. They have been showing her at numerous shows on the coast where she's won a few classes and plan to use her in their breeding programme,” Deleece said.

In addition to the stud, the Carrington's run a commercial operation which plays a pivotal role in assessing the performance of the stud. Culling is very heavy at Rondel in a bid to keep quality paramount. Steers and cull heifers are sold directly to works at around two years of age and results have been promising with all grading MSA. With two children who look forward to the future, Peter and Deleece have renewed vigour to continue their successful operation. Passionate about the breed, and keen to deliver quality cattle to their clients, the Carrington family welcomes you to peruse their herd. “Just remember, if you are ever out our way, the kettle is always boiling, the hospitality is good and if you have time, the cattle are okay as well! We are only too happy to show you around,” Deleece said.

Situated 110km north of Winton on the black soil open downs country, the Rondel Stud was established in 1987 by Peter and Deleece Carrington, second generation Droughtmaster breeders who have since welcomed aboard their son Luke, and daughter Lakisha, who are the driving force behind Rondel Stud in these latter years. The family prides themselves in breeding good quality cattle, both in stud and commercial herds, with a very strict criteria be it bulls or females. Firstly in bulls the Carrington's pay particular attention to length, depth, bone, thickness, natural muscling, structural correctness to maximize performance, and at the top of the list is fertility and temperament. Females must be able to get in calf early, calve easily and have good udder placement with ample milk to rear a calf. Length and thickness is always factored in ensuring femininity is not compromised. “We as Droughtmaster breeders feel all these selections play a major role in the breed type. If you stick to these traits culling year in year out, your stud quality lifts and in turn, compliments your commercial herd,” Peter said. “We pride ourselves in only ever selling our culls to meat works.”

Rodlyn Brahman Stud was established in the mid 1970s with the purchase of Cherokee Ole Shannon and various cows from Avondale, Brahmleigh and Hillview Studs. With a focus on producing well rounded cattle, an emphasis is placed on sourcing sires which will go on to produce good temperament, fertility and beef. The stud follows the motto, “bred for beef, not fed for beef” and believes that by getting the basics right you will produce a quality animal that will deliver over the hook. Since purchasing their Augathella property in 1997, stud principals, Rod and Lyn Sperling have increased their breeder numbers to 200 Brahmans, 100 Droughtmasters and 100 Charbrays. The Droughtmaster contingent originated from Wingfield, Saddleview, Glenlands, Billabong blood lines while the Charbrays are bred using pure bred Charolais bulls from Gunnadoo, Veejay Downs, Branchview and Advance Charolais over pure bred Rodlyn Brahman cows. Bob Nixon notes, “Our family's main objective is to produce quality, high performing cattle and we are confident this year's bulls meet the criteria.” Specifically, progeny of proven sires on offer include Wallan Creek Dimbulah, Stannum Soldier, Jabiru Shaka, Devon Court Stanmore Y228, Devon Court Ellwood Y153, and Wallan Creek's UK X185. Wararba Park

Yakka, a poll Hereford bull, also has sons featured in the sale. The Nixon's are excited to present the first progeny of Ardno Zeffer in this year's sale. The sire was purchased for $32,000 in 2006 from the Ardno Hereford Stud in Victoria. Wallan Creek Herefords are continuing to add to their long history of quality genetics with the purchase of Junior Champion Bull, Sugarloaf Cracov C044 (H) for $42,000 purchased at the recent National Hereford Show and Sale in Wodonga. Semen is currently available. The Nixon's certainly look forward to seeing his progeny in the future. As always the bulls are sold with the stud's guarantee. All Wallan Creek bulls are offered with Breedplan figures, have generations of pedigree documentation, and are backed by comprehensive performance data. The Wallan Creek Hereford Bull Sale is scheduled to be held on Friday the 11th of September 2009 at “Lilydale” Drillham, starting at 12:30pm. All enquires and on property inspections are most welcome. Contact Bob Nixon on (07) 4627 6195, mobile 0427 276 195 and Toby Nixon on (07) 4627 6197, mobile 0427 276 196.

Sperlings have successfully used E.T. programmes to try a number of new sires. This has been delivering some promising results for the stud. This year Rodlyn bulls will be featuring at Rockhampton, Longreach, Roma, Kingaroy and Fitzroy Crossing Sales while a number of bulls and females will also be available for private sale in the paddock. Buyers are always welcome to peruse the Rodlyn draft. For further information, please contact Rod and Lyn Sperling on 07 4663 1136.

Onslow standard provides size, length, balance and quality Onslow is a name that has been associated with the seed stock industry for over 40 years. Firstly with Herefords, and following the purchase of property in the Wallendbeen area, south western slopes of NSW, a move into Angus began and developed to supply the local area with commercial Angus bulls. The Cootamundra and Gundagai areas produce and grow out many steers for the local Cargill feedlot at Jinderlee and further west, the Rockdale feedlot. Despite drought over the past seven years, Angus numbers have increased dramatically and are now the dominant breed in southern New South Wales. Over the past 14 years, stud principals Doug and Barbara Tozer sought Angus females that had capacity, fertility and the fundamental commercial traits to base their herd upon. Angus females were sourced from drought areas to enable them to buy lines or age groups of females. Purchasing from herds such as Lancamaree, Sandon Glenoch, Landfall, St Pauls, Victoree and Belurea enabled Onslow to put together over 100 recorded females in a two year period. Since then there has been selected females added from several dispersals. These females were functional practical types, yet their EBVs were not in the top percentiles. The Tozer's goal has always been to breed cattle with size, length, balance and quality. Initially they used TC Stockman 2164, a bull who set

the foundation with the type of cattle they desired. Further AI sires followed with mixed results, and eventually they purchased St Pauls Traces, an impressive bull weighing 1100kg at 25 months. He extended the stud's progress with big, long thick Angus calves. His greatest achievement, apart from consistency of those commercial traits, was to be the sire of Onslow Traces Z214 who sold for $39,000 to EG & B Bateman of Gilmandyke Angus at Orange. To see Onslow Z214 in the paddock with his cows and calves, and the outstanding group of 14-15mths old bulls by him, makes breeding stud cattle a pleasure and a highlight in ones career. The next industry sire to be selected was Raff Midland Z204 who, after a chequered start, has developed into one of the Angus breeds most consistent sires. Now weighing over 1200kg he has been selected by ABS to cornerstone their 2009 AI sires. Midland Z204 appears to be unique in the fact he has a great balance of figures with +3.8 for birth, +106 for 600 day and +1.7 for IMF, and he has quality, balance, growth, temperament, feet and soft hair in both his bulls and females. Z204's dam, Raff Doris W10 is one of the breed's outstanding females. At Onslow's first sale in 2001, bulls were sold to five states and have continued to sell to those clients. One breeder, Nigel Campbell of Kinloch Angus in Tasmania sells at the annual Bothwell Sale where

over 5000 calves are sold. This year he sold 181 steer calves to top at $655 and average $600. Kinloch, located in the Lakes area in central Tasmania, has purchased bulls each year to supply quality calves for the local market. At the Goulburn Annual Calf Sale in April, which featured 5700 calves, Onslow bulls sired 4 out of the first 6 pens, including the first two pens where the Mt Rae and Twyzel calves featured. At the 54th Braidwood Weaner Sale in May, the Blue Ribbon was won by Jackson & Roberts with a pen of calves by Onslow sires. The Heggaton Family of Wallendbeen sold 433 Angus and Angus cross calves at the 57th Gundagai Weaner Sale, all by Onslow sires, and started both the Angus and XB sections in the steers and heifers to a top of $615. One of the first bulls sold by Onslow was to Roger and Glenda McIntosh of Crookwell as a foundation sire for their Myanga Angus herd and their long established Murray Grey Stud. Recently they purchased Onslow Midland D83 to continue their successful operation. This year Onslow will offer 60 bulls at the 9th Annual on property sale to be held on Monday 31st August, 2009. The first six lots are two year old bulls which have been used over stud and commercial cows and heifers. Onslow Midland C66 and C69 are extraordinary young sires with size, length, balance, quality and big testicles. There is also a

very even line of rising two year old bulls, which all possess the Onslow attributes, and an exciting group of yearlings representing the traditional Onslow standard. Along with the length, quality and balance the bulls have excellent growth, maternal with balanced carcass and intramuscular EBVs. Onslow is in a position to grow out their steers and value-add furthering their relativity in the commercial industry. Last year their autumn steers at 17-18 months sold over the grid at Cargill and averaged $1120. The spring drop steers, sold in November to Jinderlee feedlot, averaged $922. Calves are weaned onto silage, and then pasture and green oats when available. Throughout the dry summer silage and lucerne, and supplement with oaten hay and oats, is used for 90 days before sale day if necessary. Onslow is located in a favoured area of southern New South Wales being unique that it is 480-540 metres above sea level, with basalt soil, in a 650-725mm rainfall. However, after many years of drought it is hoped the good seasons return in the near future. Onslow run their 500 female Angus herd as a commercial operation and sell 100 bulls a year. Early weaning has shown how the stimulation of the digestive system works at an early age and is also a great saving on feed.

This year Onslow will offer 60 bulls at the 9th Annual on property sale to be held on Monday 31st August, 2009

Open days at Redmarley Redmarley Shorthorns Shorthorns Redmarley

PADDOCK PREPARED PREPARED BULLS BULLS PADDOCK Selection of of Redmarley Redmarley Stud Stud Females Females ++ Selection

Penned for Private Sale 16th to 19th September 2009 at Redmarley - Gordon Mundell 07 4627 7152; 0427 177 152

In 2007, Gordon and Vicki Mundell made the decision to semi retire after holding their last on property auction bull sale in September of that year. However after a few months they decided they did not want to part with their stud cattle. With this in mind, and with the requests from long standing clients to keep providing them with Redmarley bulls, Gordon decided to trial a simple on property sale in the form of four open days. This open day concept worked very well giving Gordon the opportunity to spend time chatting with his clients and discussing their needs in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. It also gave the clients the opportunity to select their bulls at their leisure. “The bulls are graded and priced accordingly and are presented in the yards for inspection, and we are on site to handle any questions with the clients directly,” Gordon said.

Following on from this success the Mundells will once again have four open days or mini sale, planned for Wednesday 16 through to Saturday 19 September 2009. The days are scheduled to coincide with the local Condamine Shorthorn stud sales. This year Gordon anticipates that they will have up to 25 bulls and 10 to 15 registered stud females on offer. “For the first time, in a long time, Redmarley is experiencing a good season and the bulls have been prepared on oats with some supplementary Anipro,” Vicki said. On offer will be the first sons of Tipperary Zazu, the 2006 Sydney Senior Champion Bull purchased in 2006. This big soft roan sire has gone on to produce some top calves possessing similar traits. Other sires represented are Conomandine Warchief, Clargo Stockbroker and Clargo Mr Classic.

An extensive past produces bulls for the future With the passing of Bob Lethbridge Senior in 1969, his family decided that the following year, 1970, Warren Point would hold its first on property bull sale. The inaugural Warren Point Bull Sale was held on 23 September. This year, on the 7th September, the Lethbridge family will be holding the 40th Annual Warren Point Bull Sale. From the first sale in 1970 up until last year, Warren Point has sold 2083 bulls at auction for an average price of $2026. This indicates that Warren Point is definitely here for the long haul and will continue to grow. This year's group of bulls, totalling 55 head, have all the

great attributes the Warren Point herd is renowned for - fertility being the number one trait, followed by temperament. Warren Point has always stood firmly behind their 100% fertility guaranteed bulls. As bulls are rigorously tested for semen evaluation, only the animals declared as 100% sound are offered for sale. A strong culling program at weaning time also ensures temperament of stock is considered early on. The use of Breedplan figures including milk, 200 day, 400 day and 600 day weights provides the carcase evaluations that we require as stud breeders. These figures, combined with fertility and temperament represent the

complete package to ensure the favourable traits are passed onto you, the commercial breeders, to keep on improving your herds. This year, Warren Point is offering a group of older bulls in addition to their normal offering. These are well grown and strong sires ideal for a cross breeding project. They will give fleshing and weight into any herd and are well worth considering as an alternative to some of the other breeds of cattle on offer at the moment. The younger group of rising two year olds are as even a line as we have ever produced. Big and strong, good muscled, and able to walk out and do the job, and

they are all back up by good Breedplan figures. Today we are faced with ever increasing grain and fuel prices, and the emerging ethanol industry poses a threat to the feedlot sector. The necessity of excellent feed conversion is a serious consideration. “What makes Poll Herefords a viable alternative when considering this problem is their ability to finish on grass in 90 to 100 days,” said stud principal, Robert Lethbridge. The Lethbridge family has maintained their faith in the breed and believe they have a lot to offer Australia's beef industry both now and in the future.

This year's group of bulls, totalling 55 head, have all the great attributes the Warren Point herd is renowned for — fertility being the number one trait, followed by temperament.

QUALITY offered at Nindigully Two new vendors will join the ranks for the 2nd Annual Balonne Invitation Bull Sale, to be held at “Myall Plains”, Nindigully on Monday 14 September. Well known Santa Gertrudis stud Swan Hill and Samari Plains Red Brahmans will join forces adding further genetics to an already impressive line up. 150 bulls comprising 50 Angus, 45 Charolais, 45 Santa Gertrudis and 10 Red Brahmans have been catalogued making it the largest and most diverse sale in the St George region. Following the dispersal of Rick Hemming's Birri Birri Santa Gertrudis stud, the Russell family of Swan Hill were asked to fill the void ensuring a continued supply of quality Santa Gertrudis genetics at the sale. Cam Russell and family have prepared 18 bulls for this particular sale and all possess the traits the Swan Hill cattle are renowned for. Red Brahmans will make their debut this year and it is believed they will be a welcome addition to an already extensive catalogue.

Keith and Annabelle Wilson of Samari Plains, a well known stud in the Brahman world, will offer a selection of bulls, several of which are polled. The stud has previously sold at the Roma Tropical Sale with excellent results. Bullamakinka Santa Gertrudis, Carabar Angus, Fairfield Charolais, Lawsons Angus, Moongool Charolais and Wightfields Santa Gertrudis will all return to sell at this year's event. Sale spokesman Gary Greer of Grant Daniel and Long said last year's inaugural sale had opened up a window of opportunity to beef producers in the region and anticipated another successful event. “Agents and vendors were both pleased with last year's outcome. To put on an inaugural sale, under such difficult seasonal conditions as experienced last year, and to receive the result it did, was a credit to all involved,” he said. “We have no doubt that this year will be another successful event.”

Gary draws attention to the issue of quality and says this year all vendors have made a pledge to ensure only top bulls make their way to Nindigully. “Vendors are committed to the success of the sale through continued quality bulls being offered each year,” he said. “I think it's important to note that this year's offering has also had a lot better start compared to last year's draft, and will be presented in excellent order.” The big plus for the Balonne sale is the fact that each breed has an extensive number of bulls on offer. Beef producers have access to a wide range of genetics, and a large number of bulls, making a trip to Nindigully worthwhile. “As I said last year, having the opportunity to peruse such a large number of bulls from a few different breeds, at the one sale on the one day is very appealing for cattlemen in this western region,” Gary said. “Regardless of the particular requirements I am confident beef producers would find the bull suited to their own job at this sale.” Further information regarding this sale can be obtained by contacting the individual vendors, or the selling agents, who will be able to assist you with your enquiry.

Gelbvieh have a lot to offer The 2009 National Gelbvieh Sale will be held at the Warwick Municipal Saleyards on Thursday 24 September at 1pm. This prestigious sale will again be hosted by the Queensland Branch of the Australian Gelbvieh Association Inc. Sale Committee Secretary Mrs Julie Nixon said, “Well grown Gelbvieh stud sires and herd improvers will be auctioned along with classy stud heifers and fertile functional cow/calf units. Buyers are assured of a quality offering. The bulls on offer comprise 34 stud bulls and three Gelbvieh infused bulls. Females include 11 heifers, four mature cows and five cow/calf units. The genetic lots of semen and embryo packages represent outstanding sires and dams.” BEEF 09 CHAMPION CARCASE Queensland President, Chris Braithwaite stated, “Cattle breeders can depend on Gelbvieh for quality with a Gelbvieh winning Overall Grand Champion Carcase at Beef 09.” Michele and Barry Fleming, Glendale Cattle Enterprises, Serpentine WA won the ANZ award for the highest pen score, across all classes, in the Beef 2009 Carcase Competition, with a group of three Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh cross steers. The winning pure bred, seven month old Gelbvieh, had a carcass weight of 196kg, 7mm rib fat, 10mm P8 fat, recording 4/5 for fat distribution and an EMA of 63 sq cm. The steers were processed straight off their mothers at an average age of 7.5 months through Hepple & Sons abattoir at Northam, WA. 2009 SYDNEY ROYAL Speaking about Sydney, Clyde Johnson said, “The only Gelbvieh exhibitors at the Sydney Royal Show were Queenslanders. As probably the smallest team there with three exhibits, four head including a calf on the cow, their quality was not to be questioned.” The Gelbvieh Champions stood proudly. The Champion Bull, Midas Collosus C2, bred and exhibited by Chris and Julie Braithwaite, Murgon, was Interbreed Champion. This bull, along with the Female Champion and Supreme Gelbvieh Exhibit, Norolle Lady in Red B44, exhibited by Clyde and Alison Johnson, Millmerran, were the Runners Up to the Interbreed Champion Pair. GELBVIEH TRAITS Christian Duff of Southern

Breeders Technology Service, SBTS, Armidale NSW, informed Gelbvieh breeders recently, “That in trials at the US Meat Animal Research Centre, MARC, at Clay Centre, Nebraska USA, on a breed basis the Gelbvieh breed was found to excel in High Growth Rates and Retail Beef Yield.” He said, “The trial data with 26 breed sires represented, showed that Gelbvieh ranked very high for Maternal Traits out of the beef breeds. Gelbvieh ranked #1 for Age of Puberty, #1 and #2 respectively for % Born and % Weaned and #1 for Kg calf weaned per cow exposed.” CROSSBREED WITH GELBVIEH The trials above indicate that Gelbvieh are ideal for crossbreeding. Crossbreeding taps the economic potential of hybrid vigour. Gelbvieh crossed with any other breed will produce an optimum combination of feed efficiency, carcase yield and carcase quality. Gelbvieh bulls and females pass on to their progeny the commendable Gelbvieh traits of fertility, longevity, good temperament, adaptability, exceptional milk, outstanding weight for age, excellent carcase quality and high saleable meat yield. “Affordable Quality” - Breeding Charolais since 1980

Brayelle Charolais is situated in the beautiful Upper Yarraman district and this year has enjoyed a relatively good season. With this in mind, stud principals Simon and Renee Otto made the decision to relocate their annual bull sale to their own property. With an aim to breed affordable, quality bulls for the commercial cattle industry, the Ottos have made it their goal to produce cattle that will go on to deliver great results for their clients, regardless of the target market. Typically their bulls are easy doing, smooth shouldered, well muscled with good fat cover. The Ottos' first Charolais cattle were purchased in 1980 from Mr George Margrie who had been breeding Charolais cattle since the early 1970s at “Redvale”, Upper Yarraman, where the stud remains today. In 1992 additional cattle were purchased from Mr Rick Pisaturo at the Mandalong dispersal; these cattle form the basis of Brayelle's commercial herd. After 22 years breeding Charolais cattle the decision to progress into the stud industry was made with the formation of 'Brayelle Charolais'. The herd was founded on females purchased at dispersals from studs such as “Roscoe”, “Bunya-vale”, “Avalon” and “Conroy”. This year's slightly reduced offering of 30 bulls includes stud and herd Charolais bulls displaying excellent temperament. About half of the bulls are sons of the proven sire, St Antonio Windsor. He has continued to pass on to his progeny a high growth rate, coupled with softness and length. A large section of the bulls will be by the impressive new sire Colinta Zeke, Junior Champion at Sydney 2006. With a weight of 1040kg at just 21mths, an EMA of 153, fat score of 9/7, the bull possesses the attributes that are highly sought after in the commercial market. His progeny are all moderate framed bulls with good thickness and are very easy doing.

Herd Sire Colinta Zeke - 2006 Sydney Junior Champion - First Sons Sell. The bulls range from good 'handy' types to some outstanding individuals. Once again a large portion of the offering will be polled. The bulls have been grazing their entire lives on grass and will be given access to a Riverina bull pellet ration with a low protein, high fibre content through winter for a period of 70 days. In the month prior to sale, the bulls will be grazing on a forage oats crop and will be ready to go straight out and work. All bulls will be weighed, semen tested, scanned and inoculated with 7/1, 3 day and 3 germ blooded. Some notable changes to our sale this year are: • New venue on- property • New combination of agents • New selling day Saturday 26th September • Free delivery (conditions apply) The Ottos hope their 3rd Annual Bull sale, on September 26, will be a great success in catering for the needs of all buyers. They welcome you to their Upper Yarraman property, 'Redvale' 1757 New England Highway for the sale commencing at 11am. Catalogue available soon at www.brayellecharolais.com

Adaptable cattle with a lot to offer

OTR

With progeny performing well all over Queensland, from Charleville in the west to Mossman and the Daintree in the far north, it's no wonder cattlemen keep returning for the adaptable genetics delivered at Cree Santa Gertudis stud. Fourth generation breeders, Shaun and Jo McGuigan are committed to the Santa Gertudis breed. They pride themselves on breeding quality sound cattle with positive commercial traits that will go on to meet market requirements. Temperament has always been, and will remain, one of the most important traits in the McGuigans' breeding programme. It has been a strong selection trait since 1928 and is followed closely by structure, fertility and performance. This year Cree stud will be offering 20 bulls at the Rockhampton Santa Sale on Wednesday 26 August 2009. Leading the charge will be Cree Dependabull, a bull that has had huge success on the show circuit winning Junior Champion Bos Indicus Bull at the Biloela Show and Junior and Grand Champion Santa Gertrudis Bull at Rockhampton. Another notable performer is Lot 2, Cree Defender who was awarded the Junior Champion Interbreed at Gin Gin and Senior Champion at Rockhampton. Other showing success

for the stud includes Junior and Grand Champion Interbreed female at Mundubbera, Junior and Grand Champion Bos Indicus female at Callide Valley and Junior Champion Interbreed at Gin Gin with the impressive female, Cree Dolores. Another female, Cree Destiny was Reserve Junior Champion at both Gin Gin and Rockhampton and won her class at Beef 2009. From a commercial aspect, Shaun and Jo had tremendous success at the Callide Valley Show with their led steer, Cree Dumbledore. Dumbledore, a purebred Santa, was named Champion Steer. At 21 months of age, the milk tooth steer, weighed in at an impressive 700kg.

Sires represented in this year 's sale draft include eight sons of Rosevale Noddy Z26 (P), the $34,000 sire purchased in 2005. Noddy is a high growth poll sire with good temperament, testicles, coat type and balanced EBVs. The first sons of Cree Improvement B004 (AI) will be offered this year. Cree Improvement was sired by Dangarfield Improvement and was used as a yearling in 2006. He was retained for his sire appeal, coat type, length and structural soundness. His temperament is second to none. The last natural sons of Kelly Wallah Babylon (P), Rosevale Rippon X290 and Rosevale Gilbraltar X228 will also be offered.

Norolle Gelbvieh - pioneers of the Gelbvieh breed The name Norolle is synonymous with the Gelbvieh breed in Australia. Clyde Johnson, of Norolle Cattle Company said “I first saw the breed at Colorado State University at Fort Collins in the USA in 1982, with Toowoomba Veterinarian and friend, Dr Peter McAuliffe, who was looking at embryo transfer techniques.” “A small herd of 32 Gelbvieh females used in an ET program had been retained by the University and I was impressed with their excellent milking and mothering ability, combined with optimum weight for age”. On their return to Australia, Dr McAuliffe located some German Gelbvieh semen in Perth WA. It had been imported from the Scottish Milk Marketing Board in 1974. Clyde said “I started with

Largest poll offering of Limousins in Qld At noon on Friday August 28th, Glenview Limousins will offer their seventh draft of Limousin bulls at Roma in the Glenview Western Limousin Bull Sale. Invited regular vendor “Ro-Maree” Westbrook will again offer bulls making this sale one of the largest of the Limousin bull sales in Queensland. The sale will catalogue 50 good quality bulls including many polls and a good selection of blacks. A polled sire with a big representation of very fit and good framed bulls is “Glenview Polled Black Xodus”. His young sons are well fleshed and wide with plenty of growth. “Xodus” had Genestar DNA tests carried out earlier and carries 3 stars for tenderness. “Glenview Polled Yuleo” has three very handy sons in the sale. All are thick, long and soft and have exceptionally quiet temperaments. “Garren Park Zurich” is the sire of eight young bulls, all very soft, long and well grown. Genestar results indicate good tenderness and marbling. “Blackbutt Triple Fix” is a polled black bull carrying a Genestar result of 3 stars for tenderness and 2 stars for marbling and this bull's three sons are well fleshed and exhibit plenty of length with very good temperaments. A standout bull, “Glenview Polled Baccarat”, selling as Lot 3 is the

polled/scurred son of the heavily used W.L.PV10 whose daughters are proving to be extremely functional breeders and have been retained in the stud. This bull definitely has the potential to be used as a stud sire. Glenview has sold some 500 bulls, and has recently conducted their third on property Female Sale at Bell selling females to stud and commercial breeders who recognise the benefits of Limousin. Quite a few of the young cattle sold at this sale have gone on to be shown at shows with some success by their new owners. Our fourth Glenview Female Sale will be held on property at Bell on Saturday 20 February 2010. Bulls selling at Roma are guaranteed under the Limousin Assurance Program and have been inoculated with 7 in 1 and 3 germ. Scanning figures and weights will be available along with mid parent Group Breedplan figures. Glenview bulls have been running on roughage with access to a 13% beef maintenance supplement in the paddock. With an aim to breed easy care, practical cattle taking care to avoid extremes, the bulls offered are quiet and soft, showing good length and muscle. This sale contains the largest offering of polled bulls in Qld. Photos can be viewed on www.limousin.com.au go to upcoming sales.

the semen as a trial to breed station milkers, using it over Poll Herefords and English Milking Shorthorns in 1982. The priority in grading up was to breed cattle that could handle a harsh environment.” “With the help of my daughters, Julie (Anderson) “Jilliby” Tara, and Kirrily (Iseppi) “Leafmore” Dalby; and in partnership with my brothers, we produced Australia's first purebred upgrade animals with a flush of four in November 1989”. Norolle Gelbvieh Stud made the public aware of Gelbvieh cattle with displays at local shows and in 1993 made its debut at the Brisbane Royal Show. The rest is history with repeated wins at numerous Royal Shows, including the 2009 Supreme Gelbvieh Exhibit at Sydney Royal Show.

Shows and field days are a stud's shop window according to Clyde Johnson, but he says the proof of the breeding program is with satisfied, new, and repeat bull buying clients. “Our bulls are used in stud Gelbvieh herds and commercial herds of all sorts of breeds with remarkable consistency in increasing the kilos on the carcase. Commercial cattle are still sold by the kilo and Norolle bulls breed on the kilos” The Norolle Gelbvieh bulls for sale this year show great potential. They have great temperament, are well muscled, growthy and athletic; and have been blooded. Clyde and Alison invite breeders to inspect the bulls at “Norolle” where visitors are always welcome. breeders' bottom line. Brangus breeders will offer producers the opportunity to select from quality-inspected sires at the two Brangus Association sponsored sales. The 4th Annual Roma sale will be held on Friday 4th September 2009 at the Roma Saleyards. Vendors from the north of New South Wales through to central Queensland support this sale. Agents for this event are Elders Breeding Services and Grant Daniel and Long and catalogues will be available from these agencies from late July. The 33rd Annual Rockhampton Sale will be hosted over two days of October

the 13th and 14th. Agents for this sale are Ray White Rural (Gracemere), Savage Barker and Backhouse and Elders Breeding Services. Traditionally the largest offering of Brangus sires at auction in Australia, this sale has proven to be the flagship auction sale for the breed. Both sales will have the catalogue listed on the Brangus Association website www.brangus.com.au including many lots with colour photographs available for prospective purchasers to peruse. Catalogues can also be obtained by contacting the Australian Brangus Cattle Association on 02 6773 3373.

Australia to host World Congress The Australian Brangus Cattle Association is gearing up to host the 6th Annual World Brangus Congress, to be held in Rockhampton. The event is expected to draw cattlemen and women from Africa, and North and South America to Australia, and will coincide with Beef Week 2012. ABCA president Alan Schutt welcomed the chance for Australian Brangus breeders to showcase their industry. “Brangus is taking off in both stud and commercial situations within Australia and we invite those who are interested in joining the ABCA to get onboard now and share in the benefits the world congress will bring,” he said. Brangus breeders presented the largest ever breed showing at Beef 2009. “We had well over 100 cattle in the show ring this year and the standard of animal

competing was outstanding,” Mr Schutt said. The Interbreed Champion female of the show was a Brangus cow from the Charlevue Stud, based at Dingo. Congress chairman Ian Galloway said with registrations having increased by over 100% in the past five years, Brangus was the breed on everyone's lips. “This event will bring cattlemen and women from America, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina Uruguay and Mexico - it's an opportune time for Australian breeders to make great international contacts, to network with interstate counterparts, and to take on board new ideas and tools to help them breed and market their product effectively.” “We expect the next three years to be exciting for Brangus in Australia, as producers increasingly realize the double benefits of outstanding

carcass traits, easy calving and the low-maintenance adaptability of the breed,” Mr Galloway said. Combining the meat-making traits of Bos Taurus cattle and the hardy constitution of the Bos Indicus, and with strict guidelines ensuring consistency in the breed, Brangus is drawing cattlemen from the far north of Australia to Western Australia and Victoria. Brangus as a breed was officially registered in 1961, with nine members. Today it has more than 230 on its books and ever-increasing enquiry from commercial breeders keen to infuse their herds with this low-effort, high-return beef breed. The event will help celebrate the 50 years of Australian Brangus and is expected to draw record numbers of Brangus stud and commercial cattle.

Australian Brangus Cattle Association President Alan Schutt, Congress chairman Ian Galloway and Beef Australia CEO Noel Landry, discussed plans for the event which will draw together Brangus breeders from many corners of the globe.

Why Brangus?

Market reports across northern Australia highlight the acceptability of Brangus genetics in the industry. The Brangus breed has evolved over 50 years to embrace the Australian environment. Genetic improvement offers graziers the opportunity of increasing the productivity of their herd. Cattle breeders have little control over enterprise inputs such as parasite control, drenches and selling commissions; however the quality of genetics introduced into the herd is completely their option. The introduction of sires that improve fertility, growth and market options have direct impact on the cattle

Low maintenance and easy care cattle. That is how Roger Finch of Argoon Herefords sums up his own herd, and the Hereford breed in general. For 30 years Roger has been involved with breeding Hereford cattle at his Dalby based property. In that time he has watched markets fluctuate, breeds come and go, but nothing has distracted or waivered his preference for the red and white cattle. “Herefords are such a versatile breed. They can be crossed with a multitude of breeds but can deliver just as good results when used in a straight breeding operation. They certainly have the flexibility to meet a wide range of markets and this is most definitely a bonus for them,” he said. In conjunction with his bull breeding, Roger runs an extensive commercial operation producing quality lines of steers and heifers for the local market. It is through this venture that he is able to monitor the performance of his breeding programme ensuring it's on the right track. A number of repeat clients return annual-

ly to review the Argoon bull draft and Roger believes they are pleased with the bulls. With a focus on temperament, Roger is adamant that he will not tolerate stirry cattle. “Docility is important. It goes on to impact carcase quality, growth rates and fertility, not to mention making handling of the stock that bit easier,” he said. Other qualities Roger likes about Herefords is their efficiency, productivity and the beef they produce. “Herefords are renowned for their tender, flavoursome beef and I personally don't think you can beat it,” he said. “There is also the research there which states that whiteface cattle can deliver the same gain for a lot less feed and in this day and age everyone is happy to save a dollar, not to mention the feed.” Roger welcomes you to inspect his draft of sale bulls which have been prepared in the paddock and are ready to go out and get the job done. to and completely satisfied with paddock conditions as their breeding pre-disposes them to be. Once weaned, the young bulls are prepared for sale in the paddock with restricted access to a limited supply of distiller's grain. This allows their true growing potential to be recognised, without any joint related stresses that overfeeding with traditional grain can produce. The sale bulls are put through their paces with rigorous morphology testing and free ranging exposure to receptive cows in the paddock. Each year's selection consists of classified and commercial, polled and horned animals. If potential is not seen in an animal to produce prime offspring, the beast is rejected and a high quality core remains. Rio bulls have been available during the Easter selling season at the Winton Santa Sale and the Longreach All Breeds Bull Sale. Mark welcomes enquiries between auctions and on property purchases are welcomed throughout the year.

Bottom line profitability a key focus at Banquet For any commercial producer there is always pride in the visual appeal of their cattle, but the key ingredient to ultimate satisfaction is profitability. Survival in any business depends on it and whatever the state of the economy, for an individual commercial producer, their best insurance against financial hardship is to have cattle that will provide least cost profitability. Simply put, cattle that grow quickly, plus have the capacity to keep growing through to heavier weights, yet have muscling and some 'finish' at domestic market weights, simply provide more market options. Returns for different weight grades change from time to time and generally faster than breeders can adjust their breeding programs. “Market flexibility is the key factor in achieving maximum profit at

any given time,” Stephen Branson of Banquet Angus said. “To achieve this we have found the bigger framed, fast growth cattle consistently allow us and our clients to meet any market specifications in the shortest time.” ‘Smaller framed cattle achieve good growth initially, but their rate of growth slows considerably as they approach the lighter domestic weight specifications, thus consuming more feed with minimal gain in muscle and yield from there on,” he added. The Banquet cattle are considerably bigger than most Angus, with the bone to carry the extra muscling that comes with the increased growth. Besides their bigger frames and stronger bone, the thing you notice most with the Banquet cattle is their incredibly quiet temperament.

The obvious benefit of this is easier handling, but there are other major advantages. Less stress when handled has been shown to have huge benefits in eating quality, as well as visual appeal of the meat by eliminating dark cutters. “Without consistent enjoyable experiences for beef consumers, demand drops off and the product achieves a lower price as a result. Happy customers at the consumer end ensure we have a future,” Stephen added. In recent years more northern based cattle producers have recognised the benefits in crossbreeding with Banquet Angus bulls over their Bos Indicus cows. Paul and Linda Oats of Borilla Creek, via Emerald are an example. “The Bransons have the right type of cattle,” Paul said. “They are practical and functional cattle and are not just selected on figures like

many producers do to their detriment. We look for temperament and beef producing capacity. These bulls have huge growth and muscling capacity, yet their calves are born small and easily. Also the temperament of the whole Banquet herd is amazing.” “We bought these bulls simply because they were exactly what we were looking for and the Bransons' after-sales service is second to none,” Paul concluded. To see the bigger, bolder Banquet cattle and to experience first hand their wonderful temperament, beef producers can inspect at any time by arrangement. The Bransons breed well beyond their annual February bull sale numbers and currently have a large number of rising 2yo bulls for private selection.

Brad Saunders, Qld, is another of the Banquet clients who have come to appreciate the outstanding size, growth, muscling and temperament attributes of the Banquet Angus bulls for a crossing program over his Brahman cows. Banquet Covert C163 (pictured) is the impressive young Banquet bull he purchased at this year's Banquet sale for the equal second top price of $16,000.
