Crathes focus on performance bulls

These features together with the good temperament that Crathes bulls offer will assist our clients to see increased profits from their herds. Principals of Crathes Charolais, Keith and Roz Glasson are especially pleased with their 2010 draft of bulls to be offered at the Noller Charolais Annual Bull Sale at the Wandoan Saleyards on August 17. Scans, off improved pasture, in April measured Eye Muscle areas from 136 to 148cm with Fat scans from 7 and 6 to 9 and 7, and Intermuscular Fat figures ranging from 4 to 4.7. These results will provide beef producers with a golden opportunity to select from an amazing line up of high performance young bulls with which to improve their herds. Roz Glasson said “This year 's draft of bulls underlines the importance in our breeding program of

Page 4

selecting females for temperament, excellent milk production, sound udders, quiet disposition, strong maternal instinct, proven fertility with solid top lines, together with plenty of volume”. Crathes have used a broad selection of sires to produce high performance bulls including Noller Bonzer, Pinay, Impair and are now introducing a fabulous young sire into their stud in Advance Domino who is a polled grandson of the famous Wyoming Wind and has performance index figures in the top 5% of the Charolais breed. Keith and Roz thank Jeff and Lynn Noller for once again inviting Crathes to participate in their annual Noller Charolais Bull Sale to be held at Wandoan on August 17. They invite producers to inspect a selection of their draft at the EKKA, and look forward to meeting their clients at the sale.

Crathes Dream Boy…..An outstanding Red Factor Charolais Bull out of Noller Laonie by Gunadoo Dream On. Crathes think so much of this young bull that they have used Dream Boy as a yearling sire with his first calves due to hit the ground in early spring. Dream Boy weighed 981kg in April, off improved pasture, with fat scans of 9 and 6 and an eye muscle area of 140cm at 22 months. He will be offered for sale at the Noller Charolais Annual Bull Sale in Wandoan on August 17.

“YOU CAN’T DO BETTER THAN THAT” Each year sees hundreds of bulls on the market. The question for buyers is "Which bulls will meet my herd's breeding objectives, making me the most money?" An important factor in selection is to know what a bull will provide for your business and know the comparative performance of the herd that the particular bull comes from. If you know that a certain herd consistently produces a good line of calves that grow into good heifers and steers and good cows and bulls, you can be confident that a bull from that herd will do the same. The X3X cow herd—fertility a priority

The Gyranda cow herd

Bulls are selected for each different group

Gyranda guarantees their bulls fertility

It is important to know the herd the bull you are considering purchasing comes from The herd genetics are what you are buying A bull's offspring will reflect the herd he comes from rather than himself. Gyranda's herd is well regarded for their gentle temperament, ease of handling, good mothering ability (critical for growing healthy calves) and ability to perform in a range of harsh environments. The herd is the result of decades of careful selection, based on a combination of visual appraisal and objective and scientific information. We use any extra information that can effectively and continually assist us in improving the economies of our herd. Breedplan EBVs help us improve the growth, fertility and carcass traits of the entire herd. It's important to focus on the average performance of your cattle, rather than the small percentage of top cattle. If only some of the cattle

in your herd are excellent, your profits will suffer. The business of breeding cattle is about the entire herd. We focus very strongly on fertility and our cattle are highly fertile. We do not keep bulls that will not increase the fertility of our herd. Heifers are mated at 10 - 14 months of age, for a 4 month period, and must have a calf on the ground by the time they are two years. Those that do not get in calf are not kept in the herd, no matter what the seasonal conditions. Gyranda sires go through a similar strict selection criteria. Full bull breeding soundness evaluation, including semen morphology testing is undertaken prior to joining, and only those with very good results in all aspects of the testing are retained or sold for breeding. Any

sires we purchase into our herd we expect to comply with the same strict selection criteria. The number of calves each bull sires (under multiple conditions) is recorded annually. Those that do not meet expectations are culled. Our purpose as suppliers of efficient beef breeders is to take guesswork out of your purchases and increase your dollar returns. We recommend our bulls to you with confidence. Gyranda backs this with a comprehensive vaccination program and a guarantee of their bull's fertility.

We invite you to visit us, to get to know the Gyranda herd. Gyranda Open Day Thursday 12th August 2010

These rising 2 year old sale bulls are the result of decades of careful selection.

Wyoming find value in Romagnola cross cattle Established in 1990, the Wyoming Romagnola Stud is operated by Ron, Diane and James Pullen at “Codrilla” Nebo

“Codrilla” is a 31,000 acre property located 55kms south west of Nebo in the Central Highlands and is a fully developed cattle enterprise running approximately 4500 head of cattle, with approximately 500 head of registered Romagnolas. The Wyoming Romagnola Stud is recognised as having Australia's largest registered Romagnola herd with an excellent line of registered fullblood Romagnolas, and a much larger herd of registered upgraded Romagnolas derived from a diverse range of quality genetics. Although passionate about their stud, the backbone of the Pullen's operation is their commercial focus, which involves the crossing of fullblood Romagnola bulls over their high content red Brahman females. “We have three main commercial breeder herds at “Codrilla”, two herds that run approximately 60 Brahman bulls that we purchase at Brahman Week in Rockhampton each year and include NCC, Palmvale, Kandoona and Wandilla bloodlines and one breeder herd that runs about 30 Romagnola bulls that we breed ourselves through our Wyoming Romagnola Stud,” Ron said. “We find the Romagnola cross cattle to be extremely valuable to our herd. Not only do they finish nicely and put the size into our Brahman base, but they cross well with any colour beast without giving a brindle effect

which means we produce nice lines of quality F1 steers and replacement females. Our F1 females are mated back to our fullblood and purebred red Brahman bulls which produce beautiful Brahman looking calves with that extra thickness to them”. “Our operation is based on the seasonal mating of our females, where we pull our bulls (both Romagnola and Brahman) out of the paddock around June, to give them a break and to ensure they are ready for work again once spring hits”. “Steers are generally turned off as milk to two teeth and sold directly from the paddock to EU approved processing plants or finished in an EU accredited feedlot”. The Wyoming Romagnola Stud sale bulls are Romagnola bulls cross well with the Pullen’s Brahman breeders targeted towards the commercial cattle producer with producing quality lines of steers that finish nicely. fullblood bulls and Brahmagnola bulls always available for private sale. The Pullen's also breed a line of red Brahmagnola bulls that they find particularly popular with cattle breeder's looking to purchase growthy red bulls with excellent muscling. All bulls are selected based on strict selection criteria for growth, muscling, fertility and temperament. Each bull is also vaccinated and semen tested and on property inspections are always welcome.

The Wyoming Romagnola Stud is recognised as having Australia's largest registered Romagnola herd with an excellent line of registered fullblood Romagnolas

Glen Fosslyn offers 100 bulls WS6

WS6

Roma 4 September 2010 Glen Fosslyn Droughtmaster Stud offers their clients' peace of mind and value for money when selecting seedstock by offering comprehensive growth and fertility data with each quality sale bull offered.

Typical young Glen Fosslyn sale bull

The 2010 sale bulls are no exception and are a very even line of young sires. • All bulls will have been semen tested for both motility (how much semen progressively moves) and morphology (the most accurate measure of individual semen quality) with all results available on display at sale day. • All bulls will have been vaccinated for the major fertility diseases with vibro, 7in1, protection against 3-day sickness and 3 germ blood for those going into ticky areas. • For extra assurance all bulls have been notch tested to prove they are not persistently infected with BVDV (Pestivirus) to ensure they do not carry this highly damaging virus into other herds. • All bulls have been tested to Australian Cattle Vets Standards, no less, providing Glen Fosslyn's high standard of bull guarantee. • All bulls will have the physical attributes contributing to their ongoing fertility assessed, including internal and external genitalia and structural soundness (walking, reproducing and feeding ability). • Registered Bulls are presented with Estimated Breeding Values for scrotal size (high correlation to fertility), 200 day milk & 200, 400 and 600 day growth figures (vital performance data to meet today's production

AYR

demands and your bottom line). • Registered bulls also come with detailed dam histories of calving (Glen Fosslyn stud and commercial cows must calve every year from two years of age or are removed from our highly fertile herd). Calving intervals given assure buyers the dam of the bull selected calves approximately every 365 days and also provide details of other calves raised by that dam. • Glen Fosslyn bulls will be scanned for rib, rump and p8 fat and presented with weights on sale day. All bulls will have been prepared on Top Country supplements off crop and are never presented in anything but working order to walk long distances and get the job done. Stud principals at Glen Fosslyn are very confident that they do all they can to provide functional, fertile bulls bred for a long working life backed by industry relevant testing, measuring and data.

An extensive past produces bulls for the future With the passing of Bob Lethbridge Senior in 1969, his family decided that the following year 1970, Warren Point would hold its first on property Bull Sale. The inaugural Warren Point Bull Sale was held on 23rd September, 1970. This year, on the 6th September, the Lethbridge family will be holding the 41st Annual Warren Point Bull Sale. From the first sale in 1970 up until last year, Warren Point has sold 2133 bulls at auction for an average price of $2060. This indicates that Warren Point is definitely here for the long haul and will continue to grow. This year 's group of bulls, totalling 65 head, have all the

great attributes that the Warren Point herd is renowned for - fertility being number one trait, followed by temperament. Warren Point has always stood firmly behind their 100% fertility guaranteed bulls. As bulls are rigorously tested for semen evaluation, only the animals declared as 100% sound are offered for sale. A strong culling program at weaning time also ensures temperament of stock is considered early on. The use of Breedplan figures including milk, 200 day, 400 day and 600 days weights provides the carcase evaluations that we require as stud breeders. These figures,

combined with fertility and temperament represent the complete package to ensure all favourable traits are passed onto you, the commercial breeders, to keep on improving your herds. This year, Warren Point is offering a group of older bulls in addition to their normal offering. These are well grown and strong sires ideal for a cross breeding project. They will give fleshing and weight into any herd and are well worth considering as an alternative to some of the other breeds of cattle on offer at the moment. The younger group of rising 2 year olds are as even a line as we have ever produced. Big and strong, good muscled

and able to walk out and do the job, and they are all backed up by good breedplan figures. Today we are faced with ever increasing grain and fuel prices, and the emerging ethanol industry poses a threat to the feedlot sector. The necessity of excellent feed conversion is a serious consideration. “What makes Poll Herefords a viable alternative when considering this problem is their ability to finish on grass in 90 to 100 days,” stud principal, Robert Lethbridge said. The Lethbridge family has maintained their faith in the breed and believe they have a lot to offer Australia's beef industry both now and in the future.

“This year's group of bulls, totalling 65 head, have all the great attributes the Warren Point herd is renowned for fertility being the number one trait, followed by temperament.”

We use and believe in Breedplan as a great tool, but we think there is no substitute for eye appraisal when selecting sires as resident sires and AI. We place emphasis on structural soundness, length and thickness with good skin and hair when selecting new sires. In 2008 we moved into breeding Poll Herefords with the purchase of Debarry MR, a powerful sire full of quality with great length and thickness. His first calves are now weaners showing a lot of

potential. We have also purchased cows from Grennock and Pine Hill. Other sires in use are the successful Alkira Zephyr and exciting new sire Smithston Don Dingalong. A thick topped young sire with lots of length, great thickness, beautiful skin and hair and a very good hind leg. AI sires include C L Domino 252M, Cootharaba Magnum and Charvel Benefit and recently used Yarram Legion C091. Our third annual bull sale will be held at the “Bexley” Sale Complex which is located on Back Creek Road between Bingara and Narrabri. We will be offering 30 outstanding stud bulls with plenty of quality and growth with well balanced EBVs and 10 quality unregistered bulls.

Commercial focus at Valera Vale

RIVERGLEN

Bulls from the Valera Vale Droughtmaster Stud at Augathella can be found working in herds from the Kimberley's to the Gulf and down to central and southern Queensland. It's a fact that Valera Vale principals, Graeme, Michael and Tracey Flynn take great pride in as they strive to breed bulls for commercial cattlemen right across Northern Australia. With herds based at Augathella and Boonah, Mr Flynn said Valera Vale has a strictly commercial focus with emphasis on environmental adaptation, fertility and temperament. “We've been breeding Droughtmaster cattle since 1969 and our cattle are raised under conditions that mirror the variable and often harsh environment that commercial cattleman have to manage,” he said. “Our cows can not only survive what nature throws at them but thrive and produce a live calf for branding annually.” “Good cattle of any breed are impressive

but we chose Droughties because they allow us to achieve our dual goals of maintaining an environmentally adapted, productive herd of female cattle while still producing heavy milk and two tooth bullocks off grass.” “We run a significant commercial operation in conjunction with the stud so we know just how important performance is within a commercial herd.” This year, Valera Vale will offer 15 bulls at the National Droughtmaster Sale in Rockhampton. Mr Flynn said another sixty bulls would be offered at the Roma Valera Vale Herd Bull Sale as part of the Landmark Beef Breeders Sale in Roma on September 24, 2010. “We'll also be offering another 11 bulls at the Roma Tropical Breeds Sale this year and over 100 bulls will be available in the paddock from September,” he said. Banquet cattle are different – bigger and bolder While Angus cattle are the preferred British Breed in beef programs in this country, Banquet Angus principals Stephen and Noeleen Branson have deliberately developed a herd of elite performance cattle that are clearly quieter and bigger than most Angus herds. They are longer, thicker and deeper and to handle the extra volume and weight, by necessity they have a heavier bone structure. Many Angus breeders have developed herds for one market only, but the Banquet cattle have been bred for market flexibility. Returns for different weight grades of cattle change from time to time and generally faster than breeders can adjust their breeding programs. Therefore cattle that grow quickly, plus have the capacity to keep growing through to heavier weights, yet have muscling and some 'finish' at domestic market weights provide more market options. "Market flexibility is the key factor in

achieving maximum profit at any given time, “Stephen Branson said. “To achieve this we have found the bold, strong boned and rapid growth cattle consistently allow us and our clients to meet any market specifications in the shortest time.” The best yearlings and steers are those that hang plenty of meat on their large, thick and long frames. For those who are EBV minded, compare an animal's 600-day weight figure with its mature cow weight figure. In the majority of seed stock herds the trend has been to select for small mature cow weights and hence smaller cattle. If one reads the latest Angus Group Breedplan Sire Summary, it is very obvious that Banquet has been selecting for larger and hence more powerful cows. All Banquet sires have mature cow weights that approach, or are larger than their 600day weight figure. Now look at other studs that sell bulls and compare. Besides these attributes, the thing you

notice most with the Banquet cattle is their incredibly quiet temperament. The obvious benefit of this is in relation to OH & S issues and easier handling, but there are other major advantages. Less stress when handled has been consistently shown in CRC research to have huge benefits in eating quality, as well as visual appeal of the meat by eliminating dark cutters. “Without consistent enjoyable experiences for beef consumers, demand drops off and the product achieves a lower price as a result. Happy customers at the consumer end ensure we have a future,” Stephen Branson said. Survival in any business depends on least cost productivity and whatever the state of the economy, for an individual commercial beef producer their best insurance against financial hardship is to have the most profitable cattle that provide the quickest turnover at the least cost, while

also allowing market flexibility. Banquet Angus bulls have proven to be very successful in the Queensland herds that have introduced them to cross over the Bos Indicus females. Feedback also indicates just how well they have adapted and performed in the Queensland environment. To see the big, bold, fast growth Banquet cattle and to experience first hand their wonderful temperament, cattle producers can inspect and purchase privately at anytime by arrangement. The Bransons have around 150 bulls to choose from. Their next annual Banquet bull sale is on Thursday 24th February at Mortlake, with a pre sale inspection of that sale team on the 17th February, also at Mortlake. To discuss breeding options with the bigger and bolder Banquet Angus, phone Stephen or Noeleen on 03 5599 2764 or email:banquetangus@westvic.com.au

Brangus benefits According to the official ARCBA data for the registered beef cattle industry the Angus and Brahman societies rank as the 1st and 3rd largest breed societies in Australia. Both these breeds have a strong commercial background in their respective areas. Brahmans are acknowledged as defining the beef industry in the north and similarly Angus has had a major impact in the temperate areas of Australia. The Brangus breed in its own right ranks as the twelfth largest breed Society in Australia but more importantly has the best of both worlds. Increasingly Brangus is considered a self replacing option for cattle producers up and down the country in both the north and the south. The Brangus breed has proven worldwide on four continents that it has the ability to produce quality beef in even the harshest of environments and still preserve

the traits that influence profitability and survival. Nearing the 50th anniversary of the breed being recognised in Australia, the Brangus breed continues to increase market share through largely the performance of the cattle in the paddock. Brangus cattle are renowned for their ability to survive and reproduce which combined are two of the strongest drivers of profit in the industry. Brangus can meet the specifications of domestic and export markets and are considered high quality carcases. The Brangus mother cow has the ability to get in calf, rebreed and produce a calf of merit in most conditions. With a solid coat pattern and either red or black coat colour Brangus can be used in most breeding programs. Brangus also excels in the convenience traits such as temperament and the important poll gene. With reduced labour

Where it counts in the saleyard. An even pen of Brangus steers illustrate their thickness and uniformity.

available to the rural industry and OH&S compliance issues, a herd of calm, docile easy to handle cattle herd is a great bonus. Add in the poll head of the Brangus and carcase and hide damage is substantially reduced. Apart from that there is one less management procedure to do, dehorning. The recent Toogoolawah show Prime Cattle section highlighted the benefits of Brangus with a Glen Heart Charolais/Brangus steer winning the champion grain fed steer. Showing an excellent growth rate and the muscling expected from a Euro infusion, the Brangus dam contributed a super temperament, excellent finishing ability, poll head and do-ability. Brangus entries also performed strongly in the grass fed classes highlighting the breed's versatility. Whilst no breed can claim to be the solution for absolutely every situation the Brangus breed goes close. With Brangus herds from the northern paddocks of Queensland to the Tasmania southern climate the breed actively proves its adaptability in the real world. Australian Brangus have encouraged this by allowing an open Herd book where Brahman percentage can range from 25% to 75%. Commercial breeders can select sires with confidence at either one of the Brangus Association sales, member on farm sales or privately from the paddock. The Association sales are based at Roma (3rd September) and Rockhampton (12th October). Bulls at these events are inspected for type

Brangus sires exhibiting the muscle pattern & tropical adaption features that Brangus can offer. and quality. Commercial breeders can find more information on the Brangus breed on our recently updated website www.brangus.com.au or by contacting the Brangus office 02 6773 3373. A list of Brangus sales is regularly updated on the site with contact details. Australian Brangus is now a member of the World Brangus

Federation (FIBRA) and is the next host of the World Brangus Congress. This event will be held in conjunction with Beef Australia 2012 and is promising to be an excellent opportunity to showcase the Brangus breed. Take the opportunity to investigate the Brangus breed and the benefits this great breed of cattle has to offer.

Eaglehawk Angus buys back Eaglehawk Angus “The demand for Angus cattle, and Angus beef, has been increasing for the last 10-15 years,” says Ian Vivers. Ian is co-owner of Eaglehawk Angus and also has Eaglehawk Farms Angus Beef, a premium Angus product which the Vivers family market into Sydney through their Farm Outlet at Mona Vale. At the Premier Glen Innes weaner sale this year Ian was required to part with $820 to secure the top pen of 10 month old weaner steers. The steers were bred, using Eaglehawk bulls, by the Reids from Ben Lomond. Rangers Valley were the losing bidders. “Supply and demand is pretty much the way any price is set, and obviously there are not enough Eaglehawk bulls out in the market!” Ian laughs. "The demand for our Premium Angus Beef product has doubled since January. We now put twenty head a week through

our shops. We have an outlet in Sydney, and a small shopfront at our packaging shed to service the local community in Glen Innes.” Angus steers averaged 224 cents a kilo liveweight at the CL Squires and Company Weaner sale this year in Inverell. The Eaglehawk Angus Stud was prominent in the 5000 head yarding with the first two lanes dominated by clients of the stud. Ian was present to buy the best pens for the family's Angus beef product. “We only purchase Eaglehawk Angus blood

cattle for our product as we know they are easy doing/low maintenance cattle. We need cattle that will perform naturally. We don't use hormones to hurry them along as it does compromise meat quality”. Ian added that he had to pay more this year for Eaglehawk weaners as the feedlots also know the cattle perform and consequently have pushed the price up. Softer, easy doing cattle get back in calf easier, they rear a better calf and just handle hard times better. We buy our genetics from herds in the states

where the conditions are much harder than a lot of Australia. Ian believes that if cattle can thrive in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and South Dakota and survive their winters and dry summers without help it's a good sign to me that they are easy doers. “It's pretty simple really,” Ian says. “Easy doing cattle, easy eating beef.”

What's in a name? 'Tiger Stripes' or 'Brindles', whatever you call them, they are generally the best steers in the yard. And the most proficient females in the herd. That big 'Brindle' cow with a blotched white face is the most efficient weaner producer world wide. Not only does she rear a good heavy weaner, but she goes back in calf year after year - rain, hail or shine. Sometimes too much shine has put this female to the test,

but that big crossbred cow with 'Stripes' always comes up trumps. These 'Tiger Striped' cows command a premium in southern USA and are noted to be the most productive females in their cow/calf operations. Today we are seeing more and more

of our Hereford bulls being used in crossbreeding programs. Clients from Hughenden,Tambo, Boulia, Bollon, Crows Nest and Toogoolawah are all getting great results from using our Hereford bulls in their crossbreeding programs. The easy doing soft

weaners they are producing are highly sort after by feedlots and grass fatteners alike. This year's Cootharaba sale team of 60 young bulls are looking good featuring all the well known Cootharaba traits of red eyes, long bodies and big butts.

Improve your crossbreds use a whiteface bull! A sub-committee of the Hereford Queensland Association has been formed to promote the advantages of using whiteface bulls to achieve MSA compliance in crossbred progeny. The Toowoomba Ag Show Sale in September will offer Whiteface bulls of diverse genetic backgrounds from several new and well known vendors. All bulls will be vet checked for fertility and structural soundness, and have growth rates exceeding 1kg/day for two year old bulls. Hereford cattle are

renowned for complying with specifications for a wide range of markets and are increasingly being used in crossbreeding programmes to improve meat quality and MSA compliance. Whiteface cattle have consistently outperformed other British bred cattle for feed efficiency in official trials leading to backgrounders paying top prices for steers and heifers to go into feedlots. In awarding the All Breeds Bull Championship to the Hereford at Beef 09, the American judge indicated he

was selecting for functional cattle that were not high maintenance and would perform best under normal commercial conditions. Catalogues will be available from the selling agents Elders and Landmark with bulls being offered by the Bowen Downs and Oak Tree Studs at Warwick, Davenger Stud at Wellcamp, Tahlan Stud at Texas, Jesco Stud of Warwick and Braelyn Stud Crows Nest and Texas. Further entries are anticipated.

Want extra growth in your calves? South Devons may be the answer South Devons are the largest of all British breed beef cattle. They offer all the benefits of growth , meat quality and yield with an exceptionally quiet temperament. Supermarket market and the Export market. So you can choose the bull that is most likely to suit the markets you are targeting. Past clients are currently using their South Devon bulls over all most popular breeds of cows with very pleasing results' said Brian James , one of the Bolinda sale vendors. The Greenup Family of Rosevale is committed to supplying the Beef Cattle Industry with bulls that will increase profits of the herds they are used in both the first and subsequent generations of calves. The success of this is dependent on a balanced approach to breeding. Selection is for a sound structured, quiet natured animal that is reproductively well above average. A three-month mating and resultant culling of any empty females helps ensure this along with the fact that all sires used must pass an annual semen morphology test. On top of this, females are retained for breeding only if their udders and teats are sound. Very little supplementation is given to breeders - they must manage themselves. Within this solid selection framework, selection for high growth, extra muscle and easy doing ability is taking place. The end result is a herd of high performing cattle that are very productive, irrespective of seasonal conditions. POWERFUL PERFORMANCE The Rosevale herd is one of the most extensively and accurately performance recorded herds in the Santa Gertrudis breed. "Our commitment to performance recording stems from a desire to breed cattle that will in turn breed both consistently and predictably" said David Greenup.

Sale 54 Tuesday 21 September 2010 at “Rosevale” Jandowae Qld

"We are pushing the boundaries of performance while keeping our culling criteria firmly in place. Our aim is to breed a unique line of cattle that will 'get the job done' in a wide range of environments to suit many markets". As a sign of the herd's progress, Breed Object $Indexes which are calculated in Santa Gertrudis Group Breedplan and take all economically important traits into account, rank Rosevale cattle near to the top of the breed. In fact, the average $Index of the entire 2010 Rosevale sale bull draft ranks in the top 10% of the breed for both the Domestic and Export $ Indexes. PASTURE PREPARED A line of 140 bulls will be offered at the 54th Rosevale Sale. In addition to the purebred Santa Gertrudis bulls, a number of Charolais- and Red Angus-composites will be represented in the sale. Sale bull photos will be posted on the stud's website in early September. In line with the Greenup Family's policy, the bulls will be prepared on oats pasture and will be ready to work from Day 1. All bulls will be semen morphology tested and will sell with the usual Rosevale guarantee. A small line of PTIC, classified 'S' heifers is expected to be catalogued also. Details of these will be available closer to sale day. Interested cattle breeders are more than welcome to contact the Greenup Family for information and organise a visit to view the Rosevale Herd for themselves.

First time offering of Mountain Valley females For the first time in its thirty year history, the Mountain Valley Poll Hereford Stud will offer ten carefully selected females at the annual on-property bull sale in August.

Contact Ian Durkin 0427 299 012 or CL Squires & Co (02) 6722 2588

Stud principal Ian Durkin said the sale of the females represented a great opportunity for Mountain Valley clients. “Our clients are excited about the opportunity to secure the genetics of some of our best female lines and leading sires,” he said. Mr Durkin said forty quality sire prospects would also be offered at the sale on Friday August 27, starting at 2pm. The bulls have been prepared on grass with no grain supplements and will be ready to work. The Mountain Valley Poll Hereford Stud has enjoyed some big successes in the show and sale rings since it was established in the early 1980s. Some of the most recent highlights for the Stud include topping the Dubbo sale in 2008 with Mountain Valley Rockyned who sold for $32,000. The Stud also took home the Junior Champion Ribbon at Dubbo in 2009 with Mountain Valley Carlton who also went on to win at the Brisbane Exhibition. Mr Durkin said both he and his late father have

worked hard to improve the Mountain Valley herd by using the best possible genetics available. “Our objective has always been to breed quality cattle consistently,” he said. “The result is a line of even sale bulls in August every year that are a traditional, dark, rich, Hereford red with well marked red eyes,” he said. “Our bulls are heavily muscled but remain soft and easy doing.”

“For the past few years, our sale bulls have averaged from 820 to 860kg at 24 months off crop.” “We have always concentrated on the whole package at Mountain Valley and every decision is made with the intent of improving the herd and giving our clients value for money.” For more information contact Ian Durkin on 0427 299 012 or CL Squires and Co on (02) 67222 588.

PROGENY of some of the Santa Gertrudis breed's highest performing genetics will be on offer at the 2010 Santa Central Sale, Nobby, September 22. Eighteen classified bulls are destined for sale from Moreton and Frances Rolfe, Hardigreen Park, Quirindi, New South Wales. Aged from 23 to 27-months the draft features the 'first season' sire, the $32,500 investment, Glenview Barbados (PS). A trio of Barbados sons will be on offer at the sale and will accompany five by Warenda Rolex, another trio by Wave Hill Z146 (PS), a pair by Kelly Wallah Dolicus (PS) and a single son by Dangarfield Morocco (P). Another highlight will be four sons of the $68,000 Glenn Oaks Farmhand. The draft contains eight individuals that are either polled or polled scurred in phenotype. Last year the stud sold four sons of Z146 (P) at the annual Santa Central Sale for an outstanding average of $22,250 topping at $37,500 for Hardigreen Lawyer selling to the Diamond H stud, Chinchilla. The outstanding result in 2009 where the stud set a $12,710 average follows on the heels of the great result in 2008 at the same fixture where the prefix averaged $10,400 for their sale team. Members of the 2010 sale team have been shown at the Sydney Royal, the Clermont Feature Show and the Springsure show this

year with some success. Six of the team has been entered for the Brisbane Royal. Several bulls of interest are, Macro (Warenda Rolex) taking a third at Clermont and fourth in the interbreed class at Springsure. Included in the team is the Glenn Oaks Farmhand son, Manager (P), who stood fifth in the large 18-20 month class at Sydney and will be shown next in Brisbane. Manager is from B253 (Gyranda Zed) (P). She has already produced the $20,000 2008 Santa Central Sale bull in Kentucky and another 'S' bull that sold in the paddock, Manager and a recently weaned bull calf weighing 381kgs with an ADWG of 1.36kgs. Now safely in calf to Rolex, she is rated as the operation's best breeder. Another Farmhand son is Mountain, who was first in the large class of junior bulls at Clermont. A 'standout' bull is the fast rising poll, Maximus. Sired by the prepotent Z146 (PS), Maximus stood second in his class at the Clermont Feature Show behind the eventual Junior Champion. In the relentless pursuit of 'sire material' the stud outlaid an event record $46,000 for the top selling Gralyn Defender (P) at last year's Santa Central Sale and a record price of $45,000 for the unled classified poll, Wave Hill Cowboy at the same event. Defender and Cowboy have both produced very satisfactory pregnancy results in their first season.

Gary Greer says -

“What a tremendous lot of bulls - the best yet” “These bulls could go into any herd and lift their production” Gary's comments are certainly encouraging for the Duarran breeding program. Their direction stays the same 'to produce genetics that lift profitability through increased kilograms per hectare in all seasons'. The Duarran cow herd consists of 650 Red Brangus, 150 Red Angus and 200 Black Brangus. The weaners are coming off their mothers at present, and are averaging 320330kg. This is especially pleasing for the Galloway's when their season only broke on the 30th of December after their worst drought ever. This year's Duarran selling program consists of:

Selling

uarran D BRANGUS / RED ANGUS

25 bulls to the Red Classic Sale at Gracemere on the 28th September - all Red Brangus; 90 bulls at the Duarran Sale at Roma on Wednesday 20th October - 60 Red Brangus, 15 Red Angus and 15 Black Brangus - all rising 2 years of age. These bulls are all backed by the knowledge that the Galloway's test their progeny's annual turnoff by entering them in feedlot trails. 100 bulls at Maranoa Special Charolais Sale Over 100 outstanding Charolais and Charbray bulls will go under the hammer at the inaugural Maranoa Special Charolais Bull sale in Roma on August 25 at 11am. The sale will feature bulls from two highly regarded Roma seed stock producers, the Freeman family of Baroola Charolais and Charbrays and the Hindle family of LVH Fairfield Charolais. Neville Freeman of Baroola Charolais and Charbrays said the two studs have shared a close association in recent years and have teamed up to provide their clients with access to a greater number of bulls in a central location. “On several occasions, different clients have discussed and requested a larger number of bulls to be offered for sale at the one venue,” he said. “We believe the Roma Stud Selling Complex is well placed for transporting bulls throughout all areas of Queensland and NSW.” The Baroola and Fairfield studs have enjoyed a close association with the Charolais breed and hold similar objectives and targets. Lindsay Hindle of Fairfield Charolais said both studs use similar genetics and are striving to achieve a type of Charolais that is a softer, good doing, easily fleshed animal that has the ability to fatten and finish with emphasis placed on softer muscle, good milking and sound temperament. Mr Hindle said the bulls chosen for this sale had been carefully selected from a group of over 250 bulls across the Baroola and LVH Fairfield herds. “In order to present an even line, we have been very stringent in our selection," he said. “All bulls will be presented off silage and supplements, are in good working order and would suit all regions.” The bulls will have vaccinations for 7 in 1, Vibrio, 3 day sickness, Botulism and 3 germ blooded.

All lots will have soundness evaluations, semen tests and presale scanning for rib and rump fat, EMA and IMF%. Baroola and Fairfield studs are offering a under bidder incentive on sale day. For further information contact Neville Freeman or Lindsay Hindle or the selling agents, Elders and Ray White Livestock.

Baroola Charolais and Charbrays on offer The inaugural draft from the Freeman's Baroola Charolais and Charbray stud will consist of 50 Charolais and 10 Charbray bulls with a good cross section of genetics including Red Factor, Full French and Polls. All of the Baroola Charolais registered bulls have had their EMA, Fat and IMF scans submitted to Charolais Breedplan, and up-to-date growth and carcase figures will be available to prospective purchasers. Stud principal Neville Freeman said one bull (Baroola D9D) emerged as the number 1 ranked bull (2008 drop) in Queensland for his Domestic, Export and Live Export $Indexes. "Another sale feature from Baroola will be the offering of an ET flush brother of Baroola Yaraka who is our top price record holder at $30,000," he said “Baroola D820F is by the renowned imported sire Genk out of their original donor cow Baroola Karla who has produced 40 progeny with sales of $127,500.” "12 of her daughters have been retained in the Baroola herd of which six are donor cows.” ‘One of her heifers sold to the Brendale Charolais stud where she is now a donor cow.” Mr Freeman said Baroola Karla K1F

passed away in May 2010 aged 19 years and 8 months. “With the last of her embryos implanted, this sale is one of the last opportunities to get hold of a son out of this highly productive cow,” he said. The Baroola Charolais stud had previously built breeding numbers up to 300 stud cows but due to persistent drought, the cow numbers have dropped to around 200. Annual AI and ET programs are carried out using some of the top performing international and domestic sires with the aim to calve 20 to 30 ET calves a year out of our most productive females not just show ribbon winners. Performance recording with Charolais Breedplan has been a part of the Baroola stud for 10 years and Mr Freeman said nearly half of the Baroola bulls are in the top 30% of the breed for one or more Indexes, Domestic, Export or Live Export in 2010. “Baroola Charolais and Charbrays focus on traits that have the most effect on commercial cattle operations,” he said. “These are fertility, growth and the important carcase data for finishing through both feedlots and off grass.”

Fairfield bulls sure to impress The Hindle Family of LVH Fairfield Charolais will present 50 bulls including 40 Charolais and 10 composite bulls for the Maranoa Special Sale. The stud has achieved a high level of success at past bull sale auctions, recording 100% clearance to date despite difficult seasonal conditions. Lindsay Hindle said the stud had invested heavily in the Charolais breed over the past seven years purchasing top end genetics from leading studs Australia wide.

“For our selection of foundation females we have concentrated largely on females that are good framed, soft easily fleshed cows on good bone with excellent milking ability and great temperament,” he said. “Another trait sought after by Fairfield is polled genetics with our herd currently standing at 75% polled females.” Fairfield also has been careful with stud sire selection, buying top priced bulls with good fat, milk and growth scores. Some of their new sire investments feature genetics from Palgrove and Moongool. They also purchased a Brisbane Ekka Junior Champion - a red factor, poll sire to provide more red sale bulls as requested by some clients. “Several sale bulls this year are by our leading sire, DSK Archer (P) who was the Reserve Junior Champion at Sydney, Junior Champion Dubbo Beef Spectacular, Junior Interbreed Champion at Bendigo Beef Week, and Senior and Interbreed Supreme Exhibit at Quirindi,” Mr Hindle said. “Our sale bulls are predictably a type of cattle that can finish.” “We have concentrated heavily on our sire and female purchases by pursuing good carcase cattle that can lay down fat." One such investment saw Fairfield purchase Palgrove Desire 101 in 2007. The Hindle family paid an Australia record of $40,000 for the heifer and are looking forward to offering the first of her progeny, Fairfield Desirabull, at the Maranoa Sale. Mr Hindle said the Fairfield sale bulls had not been pampered and had learnt to forage from weaners on grass country." “We believe the bulls are in excellent working order for sale, show good mobility and are very active,” he said. “The feedback we have received from clients to date is that our bulls "don't melt, hold their consistency throughout the breeding season.”

Five Star Senepols in hot demand As the popularity of the Senepol breed continues to spread across northern Australia, Geoff and Alison Maynard of the Five Star Senepol Stud are expecting a strong turnout for their 2010 sale at Gracemere on September 20. Approximately 100 lots will go under the hammer from 11am, including 50 Senepol and hybrid bulls, 30 Senepol/Charolais bulls and 20 registered Senepol females. Stud principal Geoff Maynard said the Senepol breed has clearly demonstrated its commercial worth over the past decade, with comprehensive wins in all major carcase competitions right across Australia. “Recently a pen of steers from Hugh and Shelly Barnet, sired by 5 Star Willie, were leading the weight gain section in the Primex Carcase Competition at the 50 day mark, with a comprehensive 3.2kg/day average,” he said. “Following on from our success at the Callide Dawson Carcase Competition in 2009, 5 Star have once again dominated the 2010 competition. With approximately 305 head entered in the competition, we won most successful exhibitor, champion grainfed heifer carcase, made a clean sweep with first, second and third place in the single grainfed heifer section, won first, second and third in the liveweight gain for grain fed heifers with one heifer doing an impressive 2.94kg/day over 80 days”. The stud also placed first and third for a pen of grainfed heifers, and second for a pen of export grassfed heifers. “We were delighted with the performance of our cattle and believe the results were a great endorsement of the breed,” Mr Maynard said. This year, the Maynard's will offer tick counts on each of the bulls catalogued for the 2010 sale. “We have had an independent, experienced, scientist perform

High demand for Brafords The 2010 National Braford Sale will be held at the Gracemere Selling Complex on Monday the 13th September. Strong demand in recent years has led to an increase in numbers for this years sale where vendors will catalogue approximately 200 bulls and 20 registered females. Top results and a 95% clearance was achieved at the 2009 sale, with bulls topping at $26,000 to average $5470. A total of 50% sold to $4000 and under. Brafords are a multi purpose breed. They are typically soft, white faced cattle with a ‘tough' and resilient constitution that thrive under our harsh Australian climate. Brafords have the perfect balance of Bos Indicus and British blood, which is welcomed by meat processors. They perform well in feedlots and on pasture with outstanding feed conversion rates that result in a top yielding carcass with excellent eating quality. The increasing popularity of Brafords was

evident at the recent Watkins & Co Braford/Braford Infused Roma Store Sale, where vendors were commended on the quality of cattle presented. The highlight of the sale was a pen of Braford heavy weight heifers that sold for a record price of 271.2c to return $1162. Overseas interest is escalating with increased enquiry and semen sales to powerhouse nations of Argentina, Brazil and South Africa with live exports to Indonesia and Thailand. With Brafords on the move and performing for breeders throughout Australia and the World, take the opportunity to invest in the largest offering of Braford genetics in Australia at the National Braford Sale, September 13, at Gracemere. Carabar Angus for any market With a strong focus on structural soundness, eye muscle and IMF, the team behind the Carabar Angus Stud at Meandarra aim to produce bulls suitable for a variety of markets. The Hegarty family established the stud in 2001 using foundation females from some of Australia's leading bloodlines. Stud principal Darren Hegarty said these females included the fully imported Lawsons VLYV1037 who was the top price cow at Lawson's 2004 sale. “Weighing in at 880kg, this cow has sixty progeny on the ground including the top price bull last year,” he said. “Another important female in our herd is Booroomooka Tracy NGMT4 who is an imported embryo from Summitcrest and weighs 850kg.”

"Tracy has 51 progeny on the ground and 16 on the way." Other females used in the Carabar herd have been purchased from Comfort Hill, Forres, The Grange and Raff Angus studs. Mr Hegarty said embryo packages have also been purchased from Kansas Angus, Te Mania, Stoney Point, Lawsons and Black Label Angus Studs. “We have recently purchased a future stud sire in The Grange Wheelwright D6 in conjunction with Kansas Angus,” he said. “Semen is available from Agri-Gene.” Mr Hegarty said the top cows in the Carabar stud herd had been artificially inseminated or flushed to some of the best sires in the Angus breed. “These sires include New Design 1407, Vermillion

Yellowstone, Stoney Point Equator, B/R New Frontier, Gardens Highmark, Karoo Direction Z181 and SAV Traveler 004.” Carabar bulls were shown at the Brisbane Exhibition for the first time last year. The showing was deemed a big success with the stud taking home a first in the 18-20 months class and second in the 24 to 30 months class. Mr Hegarty is hoping the stud has as much success with its 2010 sales and is preparing to offer two bulls at Ag Show on September 1 and fifteen bulls at the Balonne Invitational Bull Sale on September 13. Carabar will also have 45 bulls for private sale. For more information contact Darren Hegarty on 07 4665 6164 or 0428 748 542.

The sale is again a multi vendor sale with lots being provided by ten registered Simmental studs from the Hunter/North West area of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The sale is inclined towards the commercial buyer as evidenced by the results of last year's sale where they represented the majority of buyers in attendance. Of the 20 bulls sold 18 sold for $4000 or less.

The sale will include bulls, cow & calves, heifers PTIC and heifers by at least 15 registered sires and provide a cross section of types that will insure satisfaction for both the stud and discerning commercial buyer alike. Having this many vendors guarantees the widest possible gene pool to select a quality bull from. Last year a top price of $9000, an average of $3700 and in excess of 40% under $3500 says you will not have to dig deep to take home a top quality sire for your herd. confidence of purchasing a very sound bull. A small offering of females PTIC or with calf at foot will allow you the chance to widen your gene pool too.

80 years of commitment to Herefords The Nixon family's long term commitment to the Hereford breed has proven to be a success with the resurgence of the British breed within Australia's beef industry. He acknowledges Herefords are making a comeback due to the realisation of their efficiency, good temperaments and capacity to finish earlier than other breeds. Heartland Sale committee member and sale vendor Ben Evans, Carntyne Santa Gertrudis Stud, said a major feature of the Heartland Sale is the diversity of genetics on offer. “We did a bit of a tally up recently and this year there will be about forty different sires represented throughout the sale,” he said. “There would be very few sales that would have that diversity of genetics.” Mr Evans said buyers travel from all over southern and western Queensland for the sale. He said the vendors aim to offer bulls that are ready to work to western conditions. “We place an emphasis on bulls that are paddock reared so they don't fall in a heap when they go out to work,” he said. “A large percentage of the Heartland draft will also be polled bulls.” Bulls can be viewed at the Roma Saleyards from Monday September 6 and a selection will also be on display at the Ag Grow Emerald field day. The Heartland vendors are also offering free delivery of bulls to Emerald, Longreach, Toowoomba, Taroom and St George. For more information on the sale contact the selling agents, GDL, Elders and Top X Roma.

Versatility a plus for the Polls For generations Poll Herefords have been used extensively in breeding herds throughout the nation and continue to gain momentum as a breed for the future. Renowned for their meat quality, feed efficiency and yield, they are a breed that can make a considerable difference to your breeding program regardless of whether they are used in a straight, or cross breeding operation. As Paul Weir of Kie Ora stud states, “Poll Hereford cattle have a lot to offer. That Poll article has the potential to go on and make a huge impact in a cross breeding operation. As a terminal sire they are fantastic; they will produce an amazing F1 cross that will achieve a terrific result at the other end.” Take a drive into the west and it is the Poll Herefords that have stood the test of time. It is where the breed is recognised for their resilience and is proof of their ability to perform under harsh environmental extremes.

Fertility, temperament and ease of handling are all of major importance and play a vital role in the delivery of a top quality eating product. British breeds, such as Poll Herefords, are gaining recognition for a number of traits including tenderness, flavour and overall eating quality, and these are all traits that are of top priority to beef consumers. This gives the breed the edge and certainly makes them an appealing option when looking for a way to meet the market. The Roma Invitation Poll Hereford

Sale will feature 75 bulls that possess the genetics required to meet your commercial or stud objectives. Five vendors who are all committed to the Poll Hereford breed, and determined to present bulls able to meet your individual requirements, will sell at this year's sale. The genetics on offer will feature bulls from Kalem, Kie Ora, Trefoil Park, Wararba Park and Lambert; all long time supporters of this premiere sale. As always, the bulls will be presented in excellent working condition

and are certain to get the job done. All bulls are soundness evaluated, semen tested, fat scanned and EMA measured. Breedplan figures will be available. So if you are looking for a breed of cattle that will make a valuable contribution, don't dismiss a Poll Hereford. With so many positives, Paul Weir believes they are certainly worthy of your consideration. “In the paddock they deliver results; on the hook they deliver dollars and at the end of the day that's where it counts.”

Good temperament an advantage with Murray Grey bulls Another outstanding draft of 30 top-quality Murray Grey bulls have been catalogued for the 13th annual 5-Star Sale, to be held on Friday 27th August 2010, commencing at 11am. The sale will be conducted by Grant Daniel and Long at the Wandoan Saleyards. The four vendors involved in this 13th sale are Baroona Park, The Ultimate, Burnett Downs and Glengower. These vendors give a fertility guarantee on all of their bulls and each bull will have a veterinary soundness evaluation prior to the sale. In addition, details will be provided on sale day of the weight, fat and Eye Muscle Area measurements for each bull. Bulls purchased at previous 5-Star sales have gone to properties over a wide area from northern NSW through the Darling Downs, western Downs, Maranoa/Warrego and into central Queensland. One of the features of these bulls that has received considerable comment from the purchasers has been the quiet temperament and ease-ofhandling of the bulls. These good temperament traits are passed on to their progeny, so the calves are easier to handle, grow rapidly and eventually produce better quality meat. Thus, the quiet temperament of Murray Greys makes a significant contribution to their widely recognised reputation for superior meat quality. The high standard of meat quality from Murray Greys

Page 26

was again demonstrated this year at the Hampton High Country Food and Arts Festival, where steak, sausages and pies from beef supplied by several Murray Grey herds proved to be one of the most popular food items available. The comments on the meat quality, from people who were prepared to wait in long queues to buy the Murray Grey products, were all very positive. In addition, the celebrity chef at the event, Matt Golinski, spoke very enthusiastically about the quality of the beef that he used for the signature dish “Olive encrusted Murray Grey beef fillet”. In response to the numerous requests from consumers looking for a supplier of

Murray Grey beef, some preliminary discussions have been made with a butcher in south-east Queensland to provide the retail outlet as the end point of a supply chain of Murray Grey branded beef. As this supply chain develops, purchasers of bulls at the 5Star sale will be provided with details of how they can be involved as a source of purebred or crossbred steers and heifers for this trade. So, to be involved in these exciting future directions for Murray Greys, come to the 5Star sale on 27 August at Wandoan. Inspection of bulls prior to the sale can be arranged with the individual vendors and catalogues are available at any branch of Grant Daniel and Long.

Raff's showcase 45 years of breeding Angus Angus cattle traditionally marble and are renowned for their maternal and fertility attributes yet over the past decade have faced major competition from the European breeds because of their weight for age and high yielding advantages. here are certainly no larger than the average Shorthorn or middle of the road European type animal. We have improved size and growth over a forty five year period and even now despite our depth of pedigree it still can take just one generation of using moderate sires to significantly reduce our overall frame size. Environment and management will ultimately decide what your cow herd phenotype and mature cow weight will be, but if these animals have the genetic capacity to grow faster, bare more weight and produce a higher yielding carcass of beef of outstanding eating quality, then that surely gives you market flexibility and should deliver profitable production levels.” Andrew Raff questioned. Genetic improvement has been measured by many indicators since the establishment of the Aberdeen Angus breed over two hundred years ago. In the 1800's cattle were admired for their ease of fleshing, doing ability, strength of muzzle, depth of girth and wonderful carcass and milking qualities - all visual selection and hands on appraisal by the breed founders, many of whom were butchers. By the mid 1900's performance indicators were beginning to be measured - weight by the capacity measurement of the girth and a 'hock to dew claw' measurement indicative of growth. Today, in this 21st century, visual appraisal has

in some way been hijacked by science. There are now seedstock producers within the Angus breed using computer driven predictors to select ideal or presumed ideal mating outcomes with little or no visual selection parameters used outside the office. Raff Angus has always been leaders in incorporating new forms of technology and performance indicators to aid in the quest of breeding absolute consistency and excellence of product. They are aware of the need to select for as much of any trait of economic importance but have always known when to stop and accept that there are limits on how far you can go before other traits of importance start changing at the expense of individual trait selection. Raff Angus has not lost sight of the simple fact that the animal must have the ability to forage and survive our harsh environment - visual appraisal and an understanding of the basics of beef production have never been ignored. Raff Angus will this year showcase their forty fifth year of Angus seedstock breeding at their annual on property bull sale on Monday September 20th where 100 bulls will be offered. As with tradition, these bulls will be the ‘pick draft' from all 2009 born bulls. Also selling will be a hand full of rising two year old fully imported sires that will start the sale.

An extract to ponder from - The Aberdeen-Angus Breed book: “A History”~ 1958 ‘In any case, in these days when so many agencies are prepared to supply information of every imaginable subject, it is probably desirable that in some walks of life self-help should be accorded more importance and recognition

Raff angus

than it has recently been accustomed to receive; and certainly the remarkably skillful presentation of breeding cattle by men who have not had academic or theoretical training is a powerful argument for leaving to the individual breeder the choice of the methods of managing his herd.'

angus

That is why the Raff family of Raff Angus at Drillham, Queensland have over the past 45 years endeavoured to breed Angus cattle with improved frame size, yield and weight gaining abilities that still maintain the traditional Angus carcass, fertility and maternal qualities. Efficiency is a word easily used in discussion about beef production but when asked of its true definition it can leave people questioning what truly defines efficiency. The Raff family believe that there are more in-efficient low mature cow weight cattle throughout Australia than that of their larger framed counterparts. “Everything is relative”, Andrew Raff commented when talking about Angus. “Do higher mature cow weight females really eat more relative to what extra kilograms of beef they can annually produce? If fertility, doing ability and survivability are maintained isn't a heavier cow going to also give you more $$ individually when sold whilst also reducing health treatment and other per head associated expenses?” This is why the Raff family believe that it is important to produce Angus bulls one frame score larger than what perhaps is commercially desirable as when used there is almost always an instant diminishing effect. “The Angus breed is still considered moderate to small when compared against other breeds and our cattle

Lawsons & Burenda - offering 100 Angus bulls in Roma After a successful Roma Sale in 2009 with an average of $3643 and 100% clearance, Lawsons Angus and Burenda Holdings are again to offer 100 Angus bulls at Roma on 13 October, 2010. Lawsons Angus has been in business since 1969 and is the largest Angus seed stock producer in Australia. Coupled with a partnership with Gardiner Angus (GAR) in Kansas, USA, Lawsons Angus is part of one of the world's largest sources of performance Angus. Lawsons Angus Queensland commenced in 2006 and is based at Toobeah near Goondiwindi and is managed by Harry Lawson and Kate Todd.

Currently 800 registered Angus cows are run under a disciplined 100% AI program at Kinbeachie near Goondiwindi under a joint venture with the Sullivan family. Cows are inseminated to the best Angus proven sires available, selected mainly from Australia and the United States. All cows are synchronised for two rounds of AI over 25 days so there is huge selection pressure on fertility. The breeding herd are powerful efficient cows that have a unique balance between calving ease, growth and carcase potential. The cows are backed by forty years of performance recording

and the Breedplan data reflects the disciplined approach to using the best proven bulls in the world for several decades. According to Harry Lawson, "Some northern breeders are sceptical about the use of performance recording to select animals and the application of Breedplan, but our clients results speak for themselves - there is no way you can select for calving ease, high growth, fertility, carcase yield and marbling in a moderate maturity pattern without measuring all these things with animals that have run in the same management group from birth. Under our large manage-

ment groups and using high accuracy sires the animals Breedplan figures just reflect their relative performance and ranking for key traits. It's pretty handy to be able to look at a bull's Breedplan figures and get a very high accuracy of his calving ease ability, horsepower (growth and feed conversion potential) and carcase attributes. We still look for soundness, temperament and conformation, like any other breeder, the difference is these performance bred cattle must have the underlying genetic potential. There is no masking of genetic potential by over feeding, which can often be the case. It's pretty simple; it's a

proven fact that those Angus breeders not using Breedplan effectively make very little genetic progress." "The information is all there and we are happy to explain to commercial breeders how they can use it to develop a pretty simple, predictable and cost effective breeding program. It's great working with Burenda Angus to offer bulls in a joint sale as they share the same philosophy in using objective data to add value to their commercial clients. It's great having 800 registered cows adapted to the Goondiwindi environment,; the one thing that shined out when we sent cattle to Queensland in 2006 was that the better performing animals stand out in Victoria, Western Australia, Kansas and Queensland!" Harry Lawson commented. Lawsons Angus will offer 50 bulls at the Roma Sale by renowned sires such as Henry VIII, Lawsons Swagman A179, GAR Right Direction, Lawsons Romeo A754, Bon View New Design 1407, GAR Solution, GAR Predestined and Lawsons Tank X1235. Burenda Holdings was established at Augathella in the 1990s and subsequently moved to Kaimkillenbun near Dalby when the Augathella properties were sold. The Angus stud is conducted in conjunction with a Brangus registered herd. The studs are owned by the Peden and Thiess families and have been managed by Jonathan Schmidt for over 10 years. This year 400 Angus breeders will be joined or used as recipients for the ET program. The majority of the herd will be AI'd including all heifers. About 100 embryos will be implanted and all are from Burenda donors. Some semen from US sires is used but most is from Australian bred bulls including Temania, Ardrossan and Lawsons. Home bred sires Burenda Yellowstone QBUY4, Burenda Antwerp A17 and Burenda Zaul Z35 have also been used and have had an impact in the herd. There is a variety of bull styles for sale at Roma. Burenda breeders are moderate framed cows who have proved they are economic to run and have high fertility and mothering ability. To produce top weaners is of paramount importance. The bulls are weaned onto oats and are grown out on pasture and leucaena then finished on oats. They finish as powerful thick sires with high marbling coming naturally. Value for money is enhanced by great carcase traits and growth EBVs all well above average. The vendors believe their breeding strategies include being accountable to not only their commercial clients but also to the end users. Meat quality is of paramount importance and is the reason why Angus cattle are in such demand worldwide. The Roma bulls will sell with full information including pedigrees, EBVs, ultrasound scanning details, scrotal measurements and daily weight gain and will also be blooded for tick fever, vaccinated for three day sickness, botulism, vibrio, and 7 in 1. They will be independently assessed for soundness and fertility and carry a two year warranty. FREE TRANSPORT IS AVAILABLE TO SEVERAL CENTRES Paddock inspections are welcomed at any time by arrangement with either Kate Todd from Lawsons 0427 761 228 or Jonathan Schmidt from Burenda 0429 067 313.

Carcase selection a total package At the end of the day it all comes back to profit, and at Elite Poll Herefords, the objective is to produce growthy cattle that comply with the higher returning targets of processing grids. As stud principal, Kay Payne explains her breeding program factors in the entire carcase, not just one particular trait, to ensure greater profits for her clients. “Although our carcase selection is a total package, it is the positive fat that assists with pasture finishing and the superior muscling that assists with yield. The IMF, combined with our renowned quiet temperament cattle, results in a top quality eating product. Fine tuning carcase selection will become vital with the introduction of Value Based Payments,” she said. While an emphasis is placed on calving ease and muscling, Kay

201 Bulls - bred to work for you! To help you increase your on farm productivity and profitability you are able to select from 201 of “Booroomooka's Best Bulls” on Friday 13th August. The herd has been developed by three generations of the Munro family since 1926. Booroomooka cattle are resilient, highly fertile with outstanding doing ability, good growth and superior carcase quality genetics. Hugh Munro states, “We have a long term commitment to the beef industry where our integrity is never compromised. We supply the most relevant information that helps describe the genetic differences between animals for the economically important traits”. High quality sons of industry leading sires will sell including 39 sons of the potent sire Net Worth. Net Worth is breeding outstanding muscularity and weight gain in his progeny whilst keeping fleshing ability and fertility. Buyers can also pick from 34 sons of multi trait leader sire Right Time 338 combining vital fertility, growth and carcase traits with finishing ability. 23 sons of Design Y120 are to sell, bred to increase industry profitability by

being in the top 1% for the long fed $index and top 5% for the heavy grass fed $index. 10 sons of the large framed Westall are to sell. Carcase abattoir data has been analysed in an approved progeny test proving Westall to be an outstanding trait leader for eye muscle area (EBV of +9.5), marbling and retail beef yield whilst his daughters are proven to be of high fertility. Sinclair Munro states, “We are proud of this outstanding line up of sale bulls - they are ready to work for cattle producers, and are a result of our disciplined production system that produces large numbers of high quality bulls to meet customer needs. Eighty five years of committed breeding is displayed in the depth and consistency of the sale bulls.” An open day will be held at 11am on Thursday, 29th July with guest speakers Mark Inglis (MSA Livestock Supply Chain) and Wayne Upton (CRC Maternal Productivity Research) - all welcome! (Note: At time of writing May Angus Group Breedplan EBVs compared to 2008 drop calves is used for analysis).

says it is important to realise that selection of male and females that produce easily born progeny doesn't necessarily mean light calves with no growth potential. “Our heifers can deliver 40+kg calves if the season is good and these calves are bred to have the growth potential of the top 10% of the breed. That is, our heifers calves are genetically our best and are certainly not the normal industry “discards” because of low growth and size. By increasing calving ease there are more calves to sell, more dams that go back into calf, less labour needed in supervision, so ultimately, more profits for clients,” she said. At Elite Poll Herefords, the herd is run as a commercial operation with selection aided by EBVs. Selling to a range of markets including both domestic and export, MSA and the EU, has

ensured Elite bulls can reproduce for these specific markets. For many years the stud has supported local schools by donating steers so students can prepare them for carcase competitions, including the Sydney Royal Show. In the last 18 months seven steers have been prepared and together averaged a creditable 85.5 points, including silver and bronze medal awards, which demonstrates the stud's consistency and success in herd selection. This year 35 bulls, most with Market $Indexes in the top 20% of the breed or better, will be offered at the stud's on-property sale to be held on Thursday, 2 September. Further details can be obtained by contacting Kay Payne on 02 6545 8135 or via email at elitepollherefords@bigpond.com

BCM to offer 50 outstanding sires Beef producers who use Simmental genetics in their operations will no doubt be heading to the BCM Simmental Sale at Rockhampton on Monday August 30.

Billa Park, Clay Gully and Meldon Park have put together an outstanding line-up of 50 bulls to go under the hammer at the BCM Sale at the Gracemere Complex at 11am. Clay Gully principals Rob and Viv Laycock will offer 14 bulls at the sale and are hoping it tops off another successful year for the highly renowned stud. The Laycock's have sold at Rockhampton every year and have enjoyed the support of many repeat clients. Mr Laycock said Clay Gully bulls are selected for muscling, fat cover and doing ability. “This really shines through in our draft for Rockhampton in 2010,” he said. “The draft features 14 good bulls - all who show excellent muscle patterns.”

BCM

The Laycock's established the Clay Gully Simmental stud in 1981 at Victoria Point in Queensland before relocating to Kipper at Esk. 2009 was highly a successful year for Clay Gully who left Beef 2009 with Calf Champion, Junior Champion and Grand Champion honours before going on to win the same ribbons at the Brisbane Exhibition in August. 2010 is also shaping up to be a strong year with Clay Gully Danehill taking many Supreme Exhibitors Champion ribbons at local shows. Also on offer at the BCM Sale this year is a draft of 12 outstanding bulls from Rodney and Elisabeth Skene, Meldon Park Simmentals, Cecil Plains. These bulls have all been semen tested and vaccinated with 5 in 1, 3

germ blood, 3 day sickness and botulism. Meldon Park has consistently sold bulls into central Queensland for fifteen years and more recently into the north and north-western districts. The 2010 draft includes bulls by the resident poll sire Meldon Park Achilles, who was named Calf Champion at Beef 2006 and Junior Champion at Brisbane the same year. Other sires represented are Meldon Park Zoom and Lucrana Z005 who both have a number of thick, growthy prospects. “Our bulls are known for their easy doing ability, consistent quality and even fat cover without sacrificing weight for age,” Rodney Skene said. “Elisabeth and I feel that this is important in both grassfed and

grainfed situations." Billa Park will also offer 12 Simmental bulls at the annual BCM Sale. Sires featured in the Billa Park draft will include Barana Allister, Byronvale Zetvie and Boorang Zealous. The bulls have been bred in a strict Billa Park breeding program which is designed to produce bulls that can function in paddock conditions, put kilos into a calf and be able to finish for a designated market. The 2010 Billa Park draft has been hand picked to suit the Queensland market. All sale bulls will be vaccinated for 3 germ, 3 day and 5 in 1. Elders and SBB will act as the selling agents for the BCM sale.

A selection of breeds on offer at Nindigully sale in September An outstanding draft of 169 bulls will go under the hammer on September 13 for the third annual Balonne Invitational Bull Sale at Nindigully. Sale coordinator Gary Greer, Grant Daniel Long, said the sale is gaining momentum each year with the 2010 draft being the biggest in the three-year history of the sale. He said a variety of breeds would be on offer including Angus, Santa Gertrudis, Charolais, Charbray and Red Brahman genetics. “The vendors have certainly all attempted to make sure their bulls are of the highest quality this year,” Mr Greer said. “That push for quality is also reflected in the growing popularity of the bull sale.” “In the past the sale has drawn buyers from western NSW, western Queensland and the Darling Downs.” Anyone seeking more information on the sale can contact GDL St George on 07 4625 5844 or Elders St George on 07 4625 3699. WIGHTFIELDS SANTA GERTRUDIS Geoff Goodland will offer 12 bulls at the Balonne Sale this year. Sires represented include Rosevale Zinzan. “He is the number one bull in the breed for domestic index and the number three bull for his export indices,” Mr Goodland said. “We are also offering two bulls that we used in our com-

mercial herd this year for 12 weeks.” All bulls will be oats prepared and will have full performance figures. BULLAMAKINKA SANTA GERTRUDIS Bullamakinka will present 18 bulls at the 2010 Balonne Sale comprising 11 classified S bulls and 7 classifier approved commercial bulls. The Bullamakinka team said the draft is their best yet and will include bulls by their new sires Warenda Sentry (P) and Warenda Sleuth (P). The bulls have been selected for their growth, type and finish and will be finished on oats for the sale. LVH FAIRFIELD CHAROLAIS LVH Fairfield Charolais will be back again with 35 Charolais bulls. The draft has been selected from 140 bulls of excellent temperament and quality with a large percentage of poll bulls. The Fairfield bulls will be presented in a finished condition for sale presentation but stud principal, Mr Hindle said the bulls have not been pampered through their life and have learnt to forage on grass country. “The feedback we have received from previous bull sales state that Fairfield bulls are active, mobile and hold their condition well throughout their working season, showing excellent fertility and get the job done,” he said. “This years Fairfield

bulls for the Nindigully sale are the best line of bulls we have presented to date.” MOONGOOL CHAROLAIS Moongool Charolais will offer 15 quality Charolais bulls at the 2010 Balonne Invitational bull sale. Stud principal Ivan Price said the bulls will carry moderate frame, plenty of muscle and good fat coverage - a complete package to the commercial producer. “The draft will feature sires such as Moongool Winchester who produced the top selling Charolais bull in Australia in 2008 and Allanfauld Superscott who is a new AI sire from Northern Ireland,” he said. “The draft also features the first progeny of Palgrove Atomic who was the Interbreed Bull Champion at the RNA 2008 and Gunnadoo Zipper a polled bull who is breeding very well. As usual all our bulls carry our full guarantee so you can feel quite confident about investing in a Moongool bull.” SWAN HILL SANTA GERTRUDIS The Swan Hill Santa Gertrudis Stud will again offer a selection of bulls at this year's Balonne Invitation Sale. Stud principal Cam Russell said that Swan Hill was a first time vendor at last year's sale and the Swan Hill bulls had met with strong demand. “Purchasers are looking for quality and value

for money and Swan Hill will present a small draft of bulls carefully selected for their beef breeding characteristics,” he said. SAMARI RED BRAHMAN The Samari Red Brahman Stud will offer 10 rising three-year-old bulls at the Balonne Invitational Bull Sale this year. The draft will include six Red Brahman bulls including Samari Danny by Billabong Privateer. Their first bull by NCC Leopard, Samari Dawson, is also included in the draft. Samari Plains will also offer two Charbray bulls and two cream composite bulls. CARABAR ANGUS The Meandarra based Carabar Angus Stud will offer fifteen bulls at the Balonne Sale this year. The draft will include 13 two-year-old bulls and two December calves. All the bulls are the product of Carabar's extensive embryo transfer and AI program. Stud principal Darren Hegarty said buyers were welcome to inspect the bulls prior to sale. LAWSONS ANGUS Lawsons Angus will offer 38 rising twoyear-old bulls at the Balonne Sale. All bulls are registered and performance recorded. They have been selected for their ability to meet the demands of breeding commercial cattle in western Queensland.

Redmarley Stud to host open days this September After the success of their 2009 open day sale, which resulted in a total clearance of the bulls and females on offer, Gordon and Vicki Mundell will again throw open the gates to their Redmarley Shorthorn Stud from Wednesday September 15 to Friday September 17. 24 top quality bulls and a small selection of registered stud females will be on offer at the open days which will coincide with the Condamine Shorthorn stud sales. Mr Mundell said among the sires available this year is Conomandine Warchief, Tipperary Zazu, Clargo Stockbroker and Clargo Mr Classic. “The bulls on offer are two year olds and have been paddock prepared without any supplementary feeding and were put on grazing oats on June 21,” he said.

“The cattle will be penned to enable easy inspection and I will be on hand to chat with buyers.” “We have found this format of offering bulls in a relaxed manner over a few days allows us to spend more time with our clients, discussing their bull requirements.” “For those interested in a cross breeding programme, we will also have a group of Shorthorn Santa cross cattle breed by John and Susan Bell of Condamine on display which I expect will be of great interest to buyers.”

The Dalby based Argoon Hereford Stud will offer four top quality bulls at Ag Show in early September. Stud principal Roger Finch said he is looking forward to preparing the bulls for Ag Show this year and would welcome the inspection of any of his bulls prior to sale. “We will also offer two bulls out of the paddock this year,” he said. “All our bulls are prepared in the paddock and are ready to go out and get straight to work.” Mr Finch has been breeding Hereford cattle for over thirty years and said he is drawn to the versatility of the breed. “Herefords can be successfully crossed with a multitude of breeds but can deliver just as good results when used in a pure bred herd,” he said. “They certainly have the flexibility to meet a wide range of markets and this is a big bonus for them.” Mr Finch runs an extensive commercial

operation in conjunction with his bull breeding program, producing quality lines of steers and heifers for the domestic market. He said having his own commercial operation enables him to evaluate and monitor the performance of his stud herd more objectively. Mr Finch said he places a strong emphasis on temperament in his herd. "Docility is important - it goes on to impact carcase quality, growth rates and fertility, not to mention making handling of the stock that bit easier," he said. “We also put a strong emphasis on efficiency, productivity and carcase quality.” “Herefords are renowned for their tender, flavorsome beef and I personally don't think you can beat it.’

Herefords - do it better! Thornleigh Herefords at Bingara will hold its 34th Annual On-property Bull Sale on Wednesday, 18th August 2010. The 50 bulls on offer in the 34th sale are the result of 58 years of breeding predictable, highly productive Hereford genetics at Thornleigh. Featured in this year's draft are a great run of Parson Hill President sons. This bull has added tremendous length and depth of body to the Thornleigh cattle. Their overall structure is a really pleasing aspect of the cattle; they are free moving and active. There is also a very good run of bulls by homebred sire Z306 - these are low birth weight cattle and are mostly out of first calf heifers. Well recognised sires such as Kaludah Jerry, Onslow Sharka S106 and Thornleigh Sharka Z258 also have numbers of

Thornleigh Jerry D299 quality sons in the sale. A good spread of sires and a female herd rich in the in the pedigrees of many of Australia's and indeed the world's most productive cattle, ensures enough genetic diversity while focused, multi-trait selection at Thornleigh since 1952, at the same time ensures consistency and predictability. will present in excellent working order, which is extremely pleasing for the Monie family. As is usual practice at Thornleigh, all bulls will be semen tested and will receive their initial two vibriosis and 7 in 1 vaccinations. The Monie family strongly believes in Hereford cattle and the benefits that can accrue from cow herd productivity to market suitability. The biggest driver of profit is a low cost of production and Herefords do it better across the board. 180 Hazeldean performance bulls on offer Some of the 2009 bulls just prior to sale A total of 180 bulls will be for sale this year

Hazeldean Angus and Senegus are selling a similar number of bulls this year following on from last year’s successful sale where the stud achieved an impressive average of $4000 per head across both Angus and Senegus bulls. As per previous drafts the vast majority of sale bulls will have EBVs well above breed average particularly for 600 day growth, as well as Long Fed and Northern Terminal Indexes - prime target markets for northern producers. Stud principal Mr Jim Litchfield said Hazeldean had resolved many years ago to not

follow the trend of some southern studs who saw Queensland as a clearing house for second string bulls. “It quickly became apparent to us that despite the generally larger herd size and more extensive production systems in the north, the demand for superior genetics was at least

This years sale will again take place at the Pinora Sales complex a few kms north of Jackson, located 80 kms east of Roma on the Warrego highway. Free delivery to major centres within 1000 km of the sale will be available. Mr Litchfield stressed that all bulls are unconditionally guaranteed by the vendor for 12 months. "We realise that there is a significant investment in time and money when purchasing bulls and the worst thing for a long term business like ours to see is a client dissatisfied with his acquisition. So we ensure only the soundest bulls are put up for sale and have them all independently structurally assessed. In addition to this we unconditionally guarantee our bulls for at least 12 months and longer if circumstances dictate.” The Hazeldean program has long been based on functional cattle and any visitor who has travelled south to the home of Hazeldeans cattle operations on the Monaro and Riverina will soon realise that this is not the soft picture book country with cattle in knee deep clover 8 months of the year. “The reality is unfortunately very different.” said Mr Litchfield. “And I guess the positive comments cattleman make about our stock when they get them home is testimony to the adverse conditions they run under here for the most part. Only the thrifty and gritty survive here!” The 2009 Hazeldean Northern Performance Bull sale saw a total of 172 bulls sold for a 100% clearance. The auction bulls topped at $12,000 for the Angus to average $4787 and the Senegus topped at $8000 for a $3800 average. All Angus sale bulls had a 600DW EBV above +83, were all positive for scrotal and were better than breed average for all traits. Top echelon of Charolais genetics for sale at EKKA Bull Spectacular In fact, if talk before the event is anything to go by, the upcoming inaugural Charolais EKKA Bull Spectacular will feature the best group of Charolais bulls offered for sale this year. Keith Glasson is one of the Vice Presidents of the Charolais Society of Australia. He said that the latest and best Charolais genetics are to be the feature of this sale. Keith said, “This sale will provide an innovative, industry focused opportunity to showcase the breed's best young genetics. We're presenting the crème of the crop.” He explained that each leading Charolais stud was given the opportunity of choosing just one of their bulls to offer for sale at the Charolais EKKA Bull Spectacular. Keith said, “We've made sure the selection process has been thorough. Each bull will have to have been exhibited at the Royal Brisbane Show just prior to the sale. Each bull has also been through a rigorous inspection process and all their performance data had to be submitted and accessed, plus they will be inspected prior to sale”.

Page 38

Based on these criteria, 13 elite young bulls from studs in Queensland and New South Wales are featured in the sale. Each of these entries into the Charolais EKKA Bull Spectacular has been chosen based on their ability to increase the efficiency and quality in Australia's beef production systems. Keith said he expects that discerning buyers will be drawn to attending this inaugural event. “I predict these bulls will go to studs and leading commercial

buyers. This top echelon of bulls certainly has the genetics to be adding value and profit to a commercial focused beef producer's output,” he concluded.

The Charolais EKKA Bull Spectacular will be held on Thursday 5 August Centre Ring RNA Showgrounds Gregory Terrace Brisbane Arrive 6.30pm for 7pm sale

2010 will see the 48th year of stud cattle production at Nairn Park Angus. Technology has changed a great deal in this time, but the desire to breed sound efficient cattle has continued with the same level of enthusiasm and passion for the Costello family. “The amount of information that is now collected and processed has enabled our clients to gain a broader idea of our sale cattle’s genetic potential and help them to make better informed bull selections,” stud principal Rob Costello said. Their Angus line up this year is headlined by a draft of 25 sons of the highly acclaimed Te Mania Ada A149, who was the $43,500 record setter in the 2007 selling season. “Ada’s first four yearling sons to sell at auction in 2009 averaged $6000 at the Nairn Park Sale”, said Rob. “Three of these bulls were purchased by Jim and Amanda Nivision of “Ohio North” Walcha. Since purchasing them, they have been joined to 110 second and third year calvers and have achieved a 100% pregnancy result over a 9 year period.” The first line of Ada steer weaners to sell in Southern Australia achieved a greater than $100 premium over other Angus steers sired by other Angus bulls. “Ada sons offer a lot to Queensland and western producers through their high growth rates, sound structure, excellent fertility and temperament, and good sleek hair types,” advised Rob. Other sire groups in the Angus lineup for this year’s sale are by Booroomooka Warwick W245, Sav Density, Bennett Total, Mohnen Dynamite and NP New Design A006. Rob said that there would be many calving ease bulls available to choose from, as well as performance driven young sires suited for cow joinings. The Moona Plains Charolais lineup for this year’s sale includes a feature group of LT Bluegrass sons.

“The Bluegrass sons were the feature group in 2009 and the young bulls in this year’s lineup have already attracted plenty of attention”, Rob said. ”They are all ET sons out of Impair and Novotel dams. Other sale bulls being offer on the day are by EC No Doubt and Eatons Leader.” The majority of the offering are polled and great emphasis has been placed on breeding docile, sound, easy doing bulls. “Moona Plains is a young Charolais stud, but a large investment added to two generations of bull breeding experience has seen the herd develop rapidly with 150 mainly ET calves weaned this autumn”. All sale bulls are performance recorded with EBVs, carcase ultrasound tested, semen morphology tested, structurally assessed under the Beef Class System, tested negative for Pestivirus and vaccinated under the Pfizer Blue STAR Program. The Costellos have put their annual sale back one month this year to the 24th of August after consultation with their clients. “This change has been made in an effort to better accommodate our clients needs,” said Rob. For further details on the sale, please contact Rob Costello on 02 6777 8144 or 0429 778 144.

Purebred Santa Gertrudis

Australian beef producers now look toward crossbreeding for increased beef production. Santa Gertrudis have played an extensive role in this area for their associated benefits in hybrid vigour, achieved as a result of the breed’s “Purebred” status of over 50 years. Crossbred Santa Gertrudis cattle regularly top store and prime cattle markets throughout Australia. They are now sought after by all major meatworks because of their excellent lean meat yield and suitability for a wide range of top grade markets. Crossbred Santa Gertrudis make outstanding export bullocks and are in demand in the restaurant and domestic trades. Santa Gertrudis are a low maintenance breed partly due the the breed’s strict classification program where all stud cattle are examined against a set of standards prior to the animal’s registration. Maternal Fertile Tender Palatable Longevity Temperament Serving Capacity Structural Correctness

Committed to Commercial Improvement Situated 75km northeast of Wandoan on scrub and granite hills, the Bradshaws have been successfully producing commercial Simmentals for over thirty years. Stud principals Doug and Jan Bradshaw decided eight years ago to breed their own bulls. The decision to breed was made because for many years they had found it very difficult to source the femininity that was required to produce the right article that would maximise their returns and their future clients. “To get the female herd we wanted we realised that for some years this would mean concentrating on getting the females right before being able to consider the male side of things,” the Bradshaws said. This began a long journey for the Bradshaws who made many phone calls, wrote many letters and travelled thousands of kilometres to seek expert advice. After 12 months, the Bradshaws bought fifty cows and one bull which became the nucleus of their stud herd. The Bradshaws said they aim to run a herd of highly fertile cattle that have fast growth rates, moderate frames, high milking capacity with moderate sized udders and a meat quality that is of fine texture, tenderness and consistently a high saleable meat yield. “We also want our cattle to have longevity which is a long productive life with an ability to perform on high roughage rations while still being able to yield,” they said. “Our older cows are thirteen years old and still producing a great calf every year, while still maintaining their condition.” “We see no sense in culling for age when females are still producing a great calf.” Blue Dog Stud cattle were shown for the first time this year with great success. “Eclipse was named champion junior heifer and Excellence was the reserve junior champion at the Simmental Spectacular at Pittsworth,” the Bradshaws said.

“Excellence also took out champion junior heifer at Toowoomba Royal and Eclipse was the reserve and Excellence was also reserve junior heifer at Oakey.” “Executive was the junior champion bull at the Simmental Spectacular at Pittsworth and Edin junior champion at the Toowoomba Royal.” “We later took our yellow team to the Miles Show for their first outing, with Elrik winning his class and Borack also winning his class before taking out junior champion." "Our heifers Coralie D 264, Eily Pilly and D 261 received two firsts and a forth with Coralie taking out junior champion." The Bradshaws said many of the judges made comments about the feminity of the Blue Dog cattle. “We were very pleased that our show teams did so well but this was the biggest compliment of all given our aim,” they said “We are committed and place tremendous importance on the commercial side of our industry. “We would like to encourage anyone who is looking to improve the feminity and overall quality of their herd, to come and inspect our bulls as well as our females at “Red Range”, Wandoan.” “You can also spend time with us at the Royal Brisbane Show where we will have our Red and Yellow show teams.”
