Feel & Taste
Moments that make up an experience
patija Riviera
T
he Opatija Riviera, a thirty-kilometrelong coastal strip situated between the green slopes of Mount Učka and the blue Adriatic Sea, with its historic hilltop towns and villages scattered across the slopes of Istria’s largest mountain, has been attracting people for thousands of years. Greeks, Illyrians, Romans, Croats, and before them ancient nomads, hunters and gatherers, as well as other peoples of Europe discovered the incredible beauty and diversity of this small area bounded by sea, sky and mountains. Today, thousands of years after the first settlers, and almost two centuries after the birth of tourism, Opatija and its surrounding towns and villages still keep their secrets – secrets that cannot be told, but only felt and tasted.
Volosko
A
fishing village that carries the essence of the Mediterranean, Volosko has always been oriented towards the sea. Its stone steps and narrow lanes with art galleries and studios wind between the tightly packed traditional houses towards its heart – a small harbour called Mandrać, where fresh fish arrives at dawn and can soon be found on the menus of Volosko’s numerous taverns and restaurants. It is precisely this that underlies the secret of the local gastronomy. In terms of the number of topquality restaurants, Volosko ranks among the very best in Croatia. Mandrać is also a pleasant location for morning coffee with a view of the sea or an afternoon walk along the Lungomare coastal promenade, which starts right here in Volosko, and is also an ideal stage for events such as klapa evenings, jazz concerts and artistic performances.
Poljane
N
estled halfway between the sea and the peak of Mount Učka, Poljane has recently become known as an ideal refuge for all those who love comfort and relaxation in the peace and quiet of nature, which is testified to by its numerous holiday homes. Surrounded by rich greenery, Poljane offers plenty of opportunities for hiking along forest paths or more demanding mountain ones. The large Church of St Peter in the centre of Poljane is an interesting landmark. The sunny south-facing slopes of Učka are suitable for agriculture and winemaking, which is why Poljane is also known as a great place for tasting local produce.
Veprinac
T
he ancient hilltop town of Veprinac has watched over Kvarner for centuries. Passing through its town gates opens the path to the history of this area – it is like travelling in a time machine. The path leads by the small Church of St Anne, where one of the most important legal documents of this area, the Veprinac Law Code, was written 500 years ago, and also the Komunšćica, the former administrative building and prison that now houses the local Ethnographic Collection. A few hundred stone steps up, there is a viewpoint in front of the magnificent Church of St Mark, which offers a stunning view of the entire bay. However, Veprinac is not only a place steeped in history, but also a vibrant stage for klapa concerts and folk festivals, as well as a place where you can taste local specialities and wine. Connected by hiking paths to the centre of Opatija and the peak of Mount Učka, Veprinac is a great excursion destination for all generations.
Matulji
T
Dobreć
T
ucked away in centuriesold sweet chestnut forests, Dobreć is best known for this indigenous fruit that thrives on the slopes of Mount Učka. Larger and sweeter than common chestnuts, maruni sweet chestnuts are a local delicacy known all over the world. In October, Dobreć hosts the Marunada, a food festival with a long tradition that is included among the best European events of its kind. The forest surrounding Dobreć is criss-crossed with historical paths that attract asparagus and mushroom pickers in spring and autumn, but also with trails that lead up to the peak of Mount Učka or down to the coast. Along with sweet chestnuts, which are prepared in various ways – roasted, boiled, or used in desserts or even ice cream – this area is also known for its olive oil, honey and other produce that can be tasted in the local konoba-taverns.
he three bells on Matulji’s coat of arms represent the tradition of bell ringers, which has received international recognition by being included on the UNESCO List of Intangible Heritage. It is revived every year during the carnival, providing a truly unique experience for participants and spectators. The words ‘local’ and ‘tradition’ have always been valued in Matulji, a place that prides itself on its customs and a way of life that is woven into the fabric of the area and its people. This also applies to the cuisine available in konoba-style taverns and restaurants, where specialities are prepared according to original recipes passed down from generation to generation. Visitors who find themselves in the Matulji area should definitely try Jarbola, a wine obtained from an indigenous grape variety characterised by a distinctive taste. Fans of active holidays should not miss the opportunity to try the cycling and hiking trails that lead through centuries-old forests.
Lovran
A
Mošćenička Draga
M
ošćenička Draga is a small coastal town, known for its beautiful beach, peaceful surroundings, rich culture and tradition dedicated to the sea, and also its great culinary offer. Sipar Beach is one of the most beautiful in Kvarner, and in secluded places along the coastal promenade there are numerous other, small, natural beaches, far from crowds and unwanted views. The inhabitants of Mošćenička Draga covered the mountain slopes with trails and paths that once connected the villages in the mountainous hinterland with the harbour, and today these are ideal for walks and stays in nature. For all those who want new experiences, Mošćenička Draga offers a wealth of activities such as hiking, cycling and kayaking, as well as events such as fishing evenings with competitions of traditional sailing and rowing boats, and also food events dedicated, above all, to Kvarner scampi.
historic town built around its harbour, a beautiful beach shrouded in legend, a traditional hinterland with a great culinary offer, and the unsurpassed natural beauty of Istria’s highest mountain are just some of the special features of a town that has attracted travellers for thousands of years, captivating them with the scenic beauty that makes it hard to leave this shore. The oldest settlement on the Opatija Riviera dates back to the 1st century BC, when – according to tradition – the Roman patrician, statesman, general and cartographer Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa chose this place as his residence. Over time, at the spot where Mount Učka descends into the sea, a fortified harbour emerged in which the air is full of the scent of laurel and sea salt: a town on whose stone-paved streets history meets legends.
B
etween the depths of the blue sea and the green peaks of Mount Učka, there is a whole world that calls out to be explored. The former ‘playground of the gods’ that the ancient Slavs believed ruled the waves and tree canopies, offers divine experiences to anyone who is ready to discover its secrets, get to know its traditions, and experience the original Mediterranean. Traditions created over hundreds of years should be discovered slowly, and every moment along the hiking and cycling paths on the mountain slopes should be enjoyed, along with every taste of local produce such as sweet chestnuts, gourmet olives, wine, fish and seafood, sausages and cheese, and the view of every stone in ancient towns that hide exciting legends.
OUTDOOR
T
he Opatija Riviera is special for the diversity of its nature in a narrow area of land and sea, which offers almost unlimited opportunities for sports and recreational activities that – thanks to the mild climate – can be enjoyed all year round. A sea that invites you to swim, sail or take part in SUP (stand-up paddleboarding); mountain climbs and long walks from the coast to the top of Mount Učka that inspire you to explore nature; the steep cliffs that challenge even the most experienced free climbers – only the sky is the limit to the experiences you can have! You can even push this limit, because rarely can any feeling be compared to the rush of adrenaline felt by the brave adventurers who dare to take off from the peak of Učka on a hang glider or paraglider and admire the view of the entire Kvarner and Istrian regions below them. If you feel like staying on the ground, take advantage of the ‘blue’ Lungomare coastal promenade and its ‘green counterpart’, the Carmen Sylva forest promenade. You can also go horse-riding in the open pastures below Poklon Pass or take a peek underground into one of the local caves that are open to visitors. It only takes about twenty minutes by car to get from the
crystal-clear sea to the 1,400-metre-high peak of Mount Učka, which offers panoramic views of the Kvarner Gulf and Istria, and also the fascinating hinterland of Opatija, Lovran and Mošćenička Draga.
HISTORY AND HERITAGE
T
housands of years of human presence in the area of Učka and today’s Opatija Riviera have left an indelible mark on the local culture and history, which can be seen in stone-built mediaeval towns such as Veprinac or Mošćenice, the Art Nouveau façades of Opatija and Lovran’s villas, the exhibits of the Croatian Museum of Tourism and local ethnographic cvollections, and also in the contemporary work of artists in their studios. Their work, as well as the work of generations that used to live and create here in the past, awaits to be discovered by curious visitors interested in discovering the history and culture of this area. How did the inhabitants of Opatija live a hundred or more years ago? Without the luxury of modern technology, everyday life was completely in harmony with nature, its rhythm and dynamics. Food was provided by the sea that the local inhabitants conquered with ships that they built and by the land that they cultivated with tools that they made themselves. Protection was provided by the houses that they built and the clothes that they made. They produced wine and brandy in their konoba-cellars, milled olives in traditional mills called toš, wove baskets for gathering forest fruits and nets for catching fish, and cleared paths between the sea and the hinterland where mlekarice dairy maids used to carry their loads. Experience this closeness with nature yourself: try your hand at weaving baskets or fishing nets, and put out to sea with fishermen to hunt for scampi, build a dry stone wall using a method that has not changed for centuries, taste homemade brandy, walk along the paths of dairy maids – feel and experience the spirit of the tradition of this area!
GASTRONOMY
O
f course, tradition is not limited to the beauty of nature, sports activities or rich heritage. It can also be tasted. The flavours of the Opatija Riviera often bring experiences that cannot be compared to any other region. The geographical location of the Opatija Riviera between the sea and the mountain has greatly influenced its cuisine, which, thanks to its combination of continental and Mediterranean ingredients and culinary traditions, has resulted in unique tastes based on a combination of elements that are not usually combined. Seafood and fruits of the forest, innovation and tradition, local fresh ingredients and internationally renowned chefs have turned the local culinary scene into one of the most exciting in Croatia. Kvarner scampi, asparagus, truffles, juicy Lovran cherries or sweet chestnuts, along with excellent wines and olive oil. Every ingredient is a special chapter in a story that will keep you in sweet anticipation until the last line. Great flavours can not only be tasted in the local taverns and restaurants – they can also be found in the fruits of the hard work of farmers, winemakers, honey makers and fishermen, who offer visitors the opportunity to feel and taste the best that this area has to offer.

Despite improvements in boat propulsion and navigation, fishing still represents a struggle between man and nature – fishermen against the waves and wind. HOUSE OF THE LOVRAN GUC BOAT The Lovran guc is a specific type of boat whose speed and agility make it a favourite among fishermen. It was originally created in Lovran. The most famous builder of these boats was Nino Gasparinic, and the guc made by him is the main exhibit of the House of the Lovran Guc Boat. In addition to the boat that attests to the skills of local boatbuilders, the museum located in the centre of Lovran also houses a variety of multimedia content – videos, old photos and 3D models – which show the emergence of the Lovran guc boat and its importance for local fishing.
HOUSE OF THE SEA The tradition of seafaring, shipbuilding and fishing in Mošćenička Draga is presented in the ‘House of the Sea’, a modern museum that skilfully combines historical exhibits and multimedia content. The two floors of the building, located just above the harbour and waterfront in the very centre of Mošćenička Draga, are thematically divided into three parts: the first, called ‘Ribarija – Pekjarija’ provides an overview of fishing since Slavic times, the second part in the form of a workshop is dedicated to traditional boatbuilding, and the third part explains the history of local seafaring and contains numerous old artefacts.

ŽANA BOYD GALLERY This gallery brings together artists of different styles, techniques, affinities and areas of work with the aim of offering the community additional artistic value and cultural events, and enriching the local tourist offer. When there is no exhibition of an external artist, the gallery hosts artworks of the late artist Žana Boyd. Raised in an artistic family, she was captivated by painting and drawing from her early days. However, it was only at a later age that she dedicated herself to art as a profession, and her talent was quickly recognised at the famous Mandrać international art competition, where she won first prize. She created her artistic world very quickly: more than 100 paintings of a specific expressive style can be viewed in the Žana Boyd Gallery on the main street in Volosko.

Učka
Nature Park
Mount Učka, as a kind of ‘bridge’ between the sea and sky, has always been a central part of life on the Opatija Riviera. As early as 12 thousand years ago, its caves were inhabited by the first settlers in these areas; a thousand years ago, the Slavs gave it a mythical dimension by making it the home of their deities; and even today its dense forests hide enormous riches. The area of Učka and part of the neighbouring Ćićarija mountain range is protected as a nature park whose heritage includes the endemic Učka or Tommasini bell flower and more than 1,300 other plant species, as well as unique bird, butterfly and other animal species. It only takes about twenty minutes from the crystal-clear sea to reach the 1,400-metre-high mountain peak that offers a great view of the Kvarner Gulf and Istria. Discover a fascinating world rich in historical and natural heritage, and get to know a mountain criss-crossed with forest paths, hiking trails and climbing routes.
POKLON VISITOR CENTRE The Poklon Visitor Centre presents the biological diversity and cultural and historical heritage of Učka and Ćićarija in an interesting way. Its attractive building in the heart of Učka Nature Park, surrounded by forest and located at 930 metres above sea level, makes learning fun and provides an interactive, multimedia experience of the thematic units: In the mountain, Home, Fascination, Inspiration and From the top of Učka.
