A YEAR TO REMEMBER

G

From The Publisher

raduation is such a memorable event for most students. For many, it is the moment where you realize that the world will now see you, no longer as a child, but as a young adult. You have crossed that milestone and have achieved the recognition of being a high school graduate. Now you have graduated. What’s next? Some of you may be starting college in August, or perhaps even this summer. Some of you may have decided to forgo college and enter the workforce, while some may be seeking out technical certifications and degrees. You each have the opportunity to travel down the path that you have chosen for yourself. Go forward with confidence in your ability to make these decisions. Believe in yourself and find support in your family, friends and your faith when you encounter obstacles along the way. Give yourself some grace and forgiveness when you make mistakes, because you will make some. Learn from them; let the experiences shape you and teach you. My best advice — enjoy each moment. You are embarking upon the first day of the rest of your life. Don’t rush through it, but look for the beauty in each passing day, be kind to those you come into contact with and live a life of integrity. So, congratulations to each of you! Go out and celebrate! (Responsibly, please.) You have earned it. ~ Michelle Key Publisher

Alabama School of Math & Science Story By Allyson McMaken Photos Contributed By ASMS

A

SMS offers tuition-free premier science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S.T.E.M.) education to Alabama 10th, 11th and 12th graders on its residential campus. ASMS was founded by the legislature in 1989 as Alabama’s first, fully public and residential high school for sophomores, juniors and seniors seeking advanced studies in math, science, computer science and the humanities. ASMS removes barriers to educational opportunity by providing a tuition-free, premier S.T.E.M. education to high school students from all 67 counties in Alabama with all levels of socioeconomic status. ASMS is set apart by its academic rigor, residential learning environment, leadership opportunities and research focus for students. Students can pursue college-level coursework, conduct original research with expert faculty members and forge their own academic path through unique electives. ASMS is a school for students who are ready for an accelerated learning environment that challenges them to maximize their potential beyond what might be available at their home school.

—9—

Students graduate from ASMS excelling on every level, inside and outside the classroom. On average, ASMS students increase their ACT score five to seven points from when they enter to when they graduate. The average ACT score for graduates is a 30 — one of the highest in the state. Students often graduate with full-tuition scholarships to in-state institutions or are admitted to out-of-state institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Georgia Tech, Columbia and more. For 30 years, ASMS has had a transformative effect on student success, supporting students to be the very best version of themselves. Each year, ASMS opens its admissions application for current ninth and 10th graders to apply for the following school year. In addition, the school offers summer programs for rising seventh through ninth graders with a drive to develop knowledge in S.T.E.M. and leadership skills to gravitate to the top of their field one day. More information about the school and its offerings is available at asms.net or by calling 251-441-2100.

uburn resident Jinny Li, who is graduating from the Alabama School of Math and Science, is ready to begin her life as a full-time college student at Boston College where she is planning to major in finance. Li enrolled at ASMS as a sophomore three years ago. She said that living away from her family was hard at first but that overall, it has helped her prepare for college. “It was very difficult sophomore year,” Li said. “I struggled being independent as there was no one telling me when to eat, do homework, and I was basically an underage college student. Now I am much better at time management, and I know I’ll be much better prepared in college.” ASMS has a student population that is much smaller than Li’s former schools in the Auburn City school system. “The student population is much smaller than my school in Auburn, and I think that provides a closer environment to everyone,” Li said. “I like how much of a friendly environment it is. It has provided me with great opportunities that I never would have imagined doing at my school in Auburn. With a smaller student population, I could learn better as there was also a smaller class size.”

LIVELee

While at ASMS, Li helped other students in the Mobile and Baldwin County area by running a tutoring group. She also served as the general editor of the yearbook. In her spare time, Li said that she enjoys knitting, crocheting, origami and other similar hobbies. “I [just] enjoy making things,” she said. Li is an only child and said that she remembers her parents had a tough time with her moving from Auburn to Mobile at the beginning of her sophomore year. That move was 230 miles from home. In August of this year, she will make the move to Boston College which is nearly 1,200 miles from her family. It will be yet another big adjustment for her and her family. Li has some advice for other students that may be considering enrollment at ASMS. “Be ready to be independent. Your parents are not going to be around to tell you what to do.” While Li said that she does not know what she wants to do with the rest of her life after college, she did have one final piece of advice or wisdom for others. “Take every opportunity that comes to you.”

Three, Two, One ... Action!

A

Story By Kendyl Hollingsworth Photos By Robert Noles

uburn High School students are learning to look at life through a whole new lens, thanks to its competitive television production program with a passionate instructor at the helm. “We don’t treat the room as a classroom but as a learning lab newsroom,” said Program Instructor and Mentor Jared Dillard. The program consists of three classes: Introduction to Television Production, Television Production Studio Operations and Advanced Television Production. Students’ experience and instruction isn’t limited to four walls, though. “We are running a film studio, a sports production company and a newsroom at the same time,” Dillard said. “We do 50 live broadcasts a year and average more than 100 news broadcasts a year. We manage social media for different teams, photoshoots, competitions and more.” Dillard, who holds a bachelor’s degree in media studies and

a master’s degree in communications from Auburn University, participated in several of the university’s media organizations and aims to help his students realize their professional and creative potential early in life. Most of the magic happens as students put their skills to the test under the umbrella of AHS Mass Media. That includes broadcast program Tiger TV and Hi Def, Auburn High School’s SkillsUSA career technical student organization. Not only do students learn how to use advanced equipment as part of the curriculum, but they also learn the ins and outs of advanced programs like iMovie, Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro. “The most challenging part of the program was definitely learning and adapting to all of the new technology,” said AHS senior Emily “Millie” Mills. Students working with Tiger TV saw the fruits of their

—13—

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

labor when they won first place at the 2022 Alabama Media Professionals contest in the broadcast news category. Dillard said he is confident their work can rival “any other school in the state,” and even some local companies. High school students can join the television production program starting their sophomore year, but some, like Mills, begin their media journey sooner. “Originally I was an anchor at the junior high, but throughout my years, I have realized that I work better behind the scenes and doing social media,” she said. “In 10th grade, I was planning to pursue a career in broadcast journalism, but now, I am more interested in software and using technology.” Dillard said he prefers to give his students room to grow and chase their artistic visions. They get a taste of that in the studio operations class working with Tiger TV, but the practical experience accelerates in the advanced class. Dillard said the advanced students continue to complete projects from the school and various organizations, but they also take time to hone their skills and enter regional competitions. “They are students, but they are also professionals,” he added. “I treat them as professionals. I treat them as a producer would treat their newsroom, so it is an adjustment at first for some — balancing that art and freedom.” Still, Dillard said he prioritizes creating a healthy balance of work and fun — pushing students to reach their potential without letting the workload encroach on their mental health. Wesley Anne Barnes, AHS senior and Hi Def member, credited the program with sparking her interest in marketing.

LIVELee

—14—

While she said learning the new technology required patience, it also helped her discover an interest in advertising and communication. “I am so excited to use my skills I gained in the AHS Mass Media program in my future work environment,” Barnes said. “The classes will always be three of my favorite courses I took in high school, and I have the best memories with my friends in the organization.” The program was named the Best High School Television Station by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System in May 2022. Despite the program’s growth and success in his short time teaching, Dillard doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. “There is always something going on, always something to do, always something to fix, always someone to impress with our production,” he added. “My students are different. That doesn’t mean they will always make the correct decision, but that is a learning experience in itself. Failing is part of the process. You will fail. I will fail. It is what we do with that failure that determines what kind of person or organization we will become.”

‘Bee’ Prepared

uzz is the word at Beauregard High School for the 2021-22 school year. We are abuzz with movement because, from our perspective, movement is the key to improvement. In our quest of meeting our goal of becoming one of the top high schools in the system, county and state, an ACT prep program for all juniors was implemented during the first semester of this school year. The focus of the program is to foster success and continually build upon it. The ACT Preparatory Program is but one measure we have implemented during this school year in an attempt to bolster student success. In March of each school year, all juniors in Alabama take the

ACT. This test is one of the measures upon which our school is evaluated. The test has even further reaching implications for our students such as acceptance into postsecondary institutions and scholarships. Our ACT prep program was designed to further expound upon the subjects of English, mathematics, reading and science. A team of dedicated teachers was assigned to the program. During the course of study, students received instruction in each subject area assessed on the ACT. As well, students were afforded numerous opportunities to complete practice tests and exercises designed to specifically prepare them for taking the exam.

To the Class of 2022,

C

ongratulations! Four years ago, you entered your freshman year unaware of the unprecedented challenges each of you and the rest of the world would face. You faced school closures, numerous quarantines and virtual learning environments. You have had to deal with modified classroom settings, boxed lunches and restricted events. You were asked to wear masks and take the long way to each class. You have witnessed a drive-through graduation and a graduation with limited numbers. Yet, here you stand! Each of you have preserved and you have done it the Beulah way! As you enter a new and ever changing world, you will be faced with challenges and obstacles that may seem to be a hindrance. When these challenges arise, do what you do best. Rise up and take them head on. Never forget where you came from. Never forsake the ones you love. On behalf of our staff and the Beulah community, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you and congratulations. Good luck with all future endeavors. Go Bobcats!

Forever In Our Hearts ABIGAIL FAITH DARNELL DEC. 1, 2003 ~ APRIL 23, 2020 Story By Michelle Key Photos Contributed

A

bigail Faith Darnell was supposed to be a part of the graduation celebrations with the Class of 2022. However, tragedy struck the Darnell family two years ago, claiming the lives of Abbey, as she was known to friends, and her father David Darnell. According to friends and family, Abbey had a beautiful singing voice and thrived on learning new instruments. She had learned to play piano, ukulele, violin and the kalimba. She loved art and had participated in and won several state awards and was looking to apply to the Columbia University Arts Program prior to her passing. In addition to being a talented artist, musician and singer, Abbey was also active in her school. She cheered

LIVELee

for the Beulah Bobcats for four years and was named cocaptain of the varsity cheer squad. Abbey’s father, David, was a teacher at Beulah Elementary School and had taught for 17 years. The Beulah community mourned the extraordinary loss and, because of COVID-19 restrictions at the time, held a public drive-up wake at the school in May 2020. Hundreds of members of the community participated and showed support for the entire Darnell family. Abbey’s friends have never forgotten her, and have brought their memories of their beloved friend into school events since that fateful day. Using the tag #FORABBEY, the group of lifelong friends have remembered her at many school events during the last two years, including their senior prom held in April.

A

bbey never failed to brighten my day. No matter what I was faced with day to day, she would always listen to me ramble on. Abbey and I always had something to talk about from cheer to broadway shows. She was one of my first best friends and one thing I will never forget is her birthday parties, which were always the best. Another thing about Abbey was her unquestionable loyalty. If you were Abbey’s friend, not only did you get the sweet and genuine side of her, but also the funny and outgoing

side. We were at cheer tryouts, and I was very nervous, well unintentionally or intentionally Abbey passed gas and it made my heart lighten. No matter how odd that sounds, it’s the small things like that, that made Abbey who she was. She would make you laugh unstoppable if she wanted. Abbey cared. I am so thankful to have ever even had Abbey as a friend. She was a light in my life and anyone else’s who was blessed enough to get to experience her loving spirit. -~ Abby Higdon

A

bbey Darnell became my best friend when we were in the third grade. She was the kindest and most selfless girl I have ever met. She always went out of her way to make me smile, even if it meant tickling me until I couldn’t breathe. She made me laugh like no one else ever has. Her smile was so genuine and her hugs were always bear hugs. There isn’t one memory of us I could pick out, or try and remember my favorite, because every memory of her is my favorite. Abbey was truly my sunshine. ~Kailey Richardson

A

bbey was someone who I adored and loved. She always knew how to light up a room. Not only did she make me laugh, but she was a shoulder to cry on. I’ve known Abbey since we were in kindergarten; we grew up together. She was very spirited in the school and she led people with her strong relationship with God. Abbey and I used to have this tradition where every time she came over, we just had to get McDonald’s and eat in the floor of my pantry with a blanket and

—29—

she would play Italian music from her phone. There was never a dull moment with her. We decided to tryout together for cheerleading in sixth grade and we did it together ever since. She kept me going and she made me feel strong enough to push through my battles. She made me feel safe and made me feel as if I belonged. She was beautiful and the most understanding person I’d ever met. I miss her and love her very much. Abbey will now and forever be my best friend. ~Kassidy Kirby

ear LSA Graduates,

It is with mixed emotions that I sit down to write a letter to you. As we embark upon the last few days with one another, it has caused me to spend some significant time reflecting on your school experience, your future endeavors and the school’s role in both of these. While what the next phase of your life will hold for you is extremely exciting to me, I am saddened to think that our daily interactions will soon come to a halt. While I am hopeful for what your contributions of leadership, citizenship, passion, hard work and dedication will bring to our community, I am apprehensive about the absence of your lead-by-example character, attitude and presence here at LSA. While I am inspired by the opportunities and successes that lie before you, I am still in awe of those you have left as your legacy in our halls, on our walls and in our hearts. While we thank you for what you have done to leave your indelible mark upon our school, we want to encourage, support and have hopefully prepared you to make an even larger mark on our society. You will always be a Warrior ... be proud of that. This will always be a home for you ... please visit often. Please know how much all of you mean to me. Thank you Class of 2022. You have left a mark on Lee-Scott Academy and you have left a mark upon my heart. I care about each of you and I will miss you all. I wish you the very best of luck and look forward to all that your class will accomplish in the future. Go Warriors! Dr. Stan Cox Head of School

oachapoka has 256 students and is ready to graduate its seniors. But four of the school’s seniors, Zanija Harris-Brinkley, Valorie Howard, Braylan Hughley and Jahunna Neston, have marched the field for the last time as members of the Loachapoka marching band. “Loachapoka is widely known for their marching band,” said the schools’ website. “And with their dynamic drum majors and dance , they are who they say they are, ‘The Baddest Band in the Land.’” The band, the Mighty Marching Indians, was formed in the 1970s. The school itself was formed after high school students in Loachapoka were bussed to Auburn until 1968. Then, high school students attended Beauregard High School until Loachapoka was formed, serving grades seventh through 12th. The band marches at football games, contests and community events. Shane Colquhoun has served as the director for 14 years. “I consider it an honor to serve the students of Loachapoka,” he said. “I love this place and never take the opportunity I have here for granted.”

This year’s band consists of 48 members. “The Loachapoka School Band is a group of student musicians with the highest standards of performance and behavior,” the website said. “We represent the Loachapoka community with pride, dignity, and professionalism. “Our program of activities is well balanced between Concert Band and Marching Band. We offer a quality, well-rounded education in music and life skills to all our members.” The band is built on four pillars — commitment, leadership, teamwork and musicianship, the website said. “We are a cohesive, supportive family,” the website said. “We stick together and help each other through the hard times. We are a positive force in the lives of young people. In addition to enriching lives through musical involvement, we learn discipline, cooperation, work ethic, goal setting and achievement. We learn to respect ourselves and others, and elevate self-esteem and self-worth. “We are serious and professional in our performance and rehearsal approach. Our rehearsals are well planned and well organized, and no time is wasted. We perform with the utmost of pride and dignity at all times.”

What’s Cooking? Story By Stacey Patton Wallace Photos By Mike Wallace and Contributed By Judy Elred

oo many cooks spoil the broth. That well-known adage isn’t the case in Chef Judy Eldred’s culinary arts classes at Opelika High School, where she has been teaching for the last seven years. Eldred, a graduate of the Orlando Culinary Academy, which is part of Le Cordon Bleu, teaches about 110 students per year in three or four classes a semester. Her culinary arts classes are the restaurant, food and beverages portion of the Career Tech program at OHS. The introductory course in the culinary arts program is Hospitality and Tourism. This class covers a very broad spectrum. Students learn about hotels, restaurants, the service industry, travel and etiquette. “This has been a growing industry in the last few years,”

LIVELee

Eldred said. In the introductory course, students have paper/pencil tests on basic terminology and correct cooking times and temperatures for food safety. Eldred’s second course, Culinary I, is more focused. In it, students learn basic knife skills and cuts for meats and vegetables. Also, they learn about the five mother sauces: tomato, brown, béchamel (white), Hollandaise and mayonnaise. The students spend a week on each protein and focus on the parts, rather than the whole dish. After completing Culinary I, students may choose to take either Culinary II or Baking and Pastry Art. In Culinary II, students take all that they learned in Culinary I and make a complete dish.

—54—

For example, students, using a multi-step process, learn to make eloquent dishes such as traditional hors d’oeuvres. Students in Baking and Pastry Art are introduced to bread making. They learn to bake laminated doughs such as croissants, and yeast doughs such as yeast rolls, sour dough bread and Challah bread, a traditional Jewish bread. Students in this class also bake basic cakes, pies and cookies; they also learn to decorate cakes. In Culinary I, Culinary II and Baking and Pastry Art classes students work together as a team and are graded on performancebased projects and on whether or not they stay on task and get the projects done on time. “My greatest challenge is getting my students to understand that this skill set will be something they need to know later on in a future career, even if they aren’t currently using it at home,” Eldred said. “Also, one in five people at sometime in their lives will work in the food industry.” Eldred said her greatest joy is when her students begin to enjoy class. “It’s great when they start to get it and the light bulb goes on,” she said. One of Eldred’s former students is currently enrolled in Auburn University’s Culinary Arts program. In addition, Eldred said that her classes will be touring Auburn’s new state-of-the-art Culinary Arts facility, which will be completed later this year. Other former students are working their way through college in the food service industry at restaurants and quick service locations. “This culinary arts program at OHS is important, not only if students plan to do this for a living, but because they will also

be able to prepare a good meal for themselves, their parents or a date,” Eldred said. OHS’s culinary arts students also partner with students in the agriculture program. For instance, the students recently hosted a dinner in which they used lettuce and basil which were grown from the aquaponics program at OHS. In addition, last summer, the two programs combined forces once again. While the agriculture students grew corn, tomatoes, green beans and zipper peas, the culinary students canned the fresh produce. Eldred’s students in her Culinary II class all echo the same sentiments: they greatly appreciate and admire their teacher, and they love her class. Senior Randall Davis, who has been in the culinary arts program since he was in the ninth grade, said, “I really like the environment and the teamwork. Your teammates can help you out.” Junior Shamyria Hughley used to watch the Food Network with her grandma. “When I came to Opelika High School, taking Ms. Eldred’s class was a great opportunity for me,” said Hughley, who plans to become a mortician. “I learned about why she became a chef; she inspires me.” Senior Clinton Chisholm, who is in Eldred’s Baking and Pastry Art class, assists in Culinary II. After Chisholm earns a doctorate and becomes a history professor, he said he wants to attend the Culinary Arts program at Auburn University and be a professional pastry chef, eventually owning his own bakery. Interestingly, Eldred owned her own bakery, “Scrumdiddlyumptious,” in Smiths Station before she began her teaching career at OHS.

Senior Matthew Riddle, who has been in the culinary arts program since ninth grade, is currently a line cook at the Auburn Marriott Opelika Resort & Spa at Grand National. “My job is to make sure that everything is sanitary and to clean the equipment so that there are no pathogens in the food,” Riddle said. “I plan to join the Alabama Army National Guard where I will be able to use the skills I’ve learned in my culinary arts classes.” Junior Nehemiah Moore, who has been with Eldred since ninth grade, said that learning to cook for himself has become a hobby. He plans to become a teacher or a psychologist. “This class has changed me,” Moore said. “It has made me more independent and better able to think for myself in stressful situations.” Junior Amauria Hann, who has also been with Eldred since ninth grade, echoed her classmates’ high praise of Eldred and her culinary arts classes. “It’s a good experience to learn something new every day,” she said. “I’m not a good cook, but Ms. Eldred has really helped me. If I get frustrated, she picks me up; I might have quit my first year without her. She’s like our mom.” Eldred’s students also agree that their teacher always makes sure that they practice safety in her class. For example, they wear gloves and slip-resistant shoes. Also, Allen the aloe plant stands by in case of burns, but thankfully, he hasn’t been called into service. “Ms. Eldred is very serious about what we do in here,” Chisholm said. “She makes sure that everybody is safe.” OHS’s culinary arts students are also involved in various competitions. For example, this year, one of Eldred’s students won a silver medal in the Individual Culinary Competition at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Competition held at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. Also this year, both Culinary and Management teams competed in the ProStart Invitational at Perdido Beach Resort. The culinary team received the Teamwork and Spirit Award. On April 12, the Alabama Army National Guard sent representatives to judge students on a Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) challenge. On April 28, Eldred and her students traveled to Orlando, Florida, for the Cook Around the World Competition. This is a one-day competition hosted at Walt Disney World Resort. It is a team event; OHS competed and won against teams from all over the country. In April 2019, over 300 schools competed. However, the event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID-19. Eldred said that in the Cook Around the World Competition, before the event, each school is given a region and a generic pantry list, which includes ingredients in foods from that region. However, the students didn’t know what they would actually be cooking until they arrived at the competition. After the one-day competition, a dinner gala was held on the second day for all the participants. OHS was announced as the overall winner at the dinner, and a celebrity chef was the guest speaker. Eldred and her students are living proof that too many cooks don’t spoil the broth. Instead, with a great educator and terrific students using teamwork, they make it even better.

The Three “C’s” of Education

Story Contributed By Trinity Christian Photos Contributed

or the last 45 years Trinity Christian School, a ministry of Trinity Presbyterian Church, has existed to partner with Christian parents of Lee County and the surrounding area to graduate virtuous scholars who think clearly, listen carefully, discern wisely and reason persuasively — all with an eagerness to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. The only classical Christian school in East Alabama, TCS offers a rigorous K-12 academic program complete with top-tier fine arts and athletic programs. Our graduates are spread across the country fulfilling the purposes God has ordained. Classical. Going beyond merely assimilating and restating facts, a classical model aims to teach values, truth and critical thinking. Widely used until the mid-20th century, this approach educated most of the great thinkers and artists of the Renaissance, Reformation and early American historical periods. A classical model also best respects the development stages of a child’s learning abilities and seeks to build upon the natural stages of cognitive maturation.

LIVELee

Christian. We believe that all truth is God’s truth, and that all subjects should be taught as part of a divinely ordered whole. Our goal is to train children in a world and life view that is distinctly biblical, giving them the necessary foundation to serve God in every aspect in His world. TCS students are challenged to bring every thought into captivity for Christ and to use the skills and knowledge they master for glorifying God in all spheres of life. Covenantal. We assist parents in the God-given responsibility of educating their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Under the delegation of the family (in loco parentis), we seek to teach and discipline in a secure Christian environment of classical academic excellence. Our desire is to help parents cultivate in their children an enduring love of learning, a commitment to serve others and a dedication to the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty, forged from the historical models of orthodox Christianity. You have had your last Socratic circle, your rhetoric speech has been presented and you’ve had your last cup of coffee while discussing Aristotle. What a joy to have watched over the years as the Lord has grown you into a wonderful group of young men and women who exemplify each and every day “glorifying God and enjoying Him”. We will miss your servant hearts, your enthusiasm for learning and your desire to put the needs of others before your own, and we will remember for many years the many ways that you led the students on our campus by serving them in love. You truly are virtuous scholars who think clearly, listen carefully, discern wisely, reason persuasively and articulate precisely, and it is our honor to call you alumni of Trinity Christian School. We look forward to seeing all the ways you will serve the Kingdom throughout your lives! With gratitude and love, Mr. Cornelius
