IBC LOOKS TOWARDS A HYBRID FUTURE FOR EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCES
This year’s IBC had originally been intended as a return to Amsterdam’s RAI Centre in the run-up to Christmas but will once again be an online event. In an interview given before this decision was taken, IBC chief executive Mike Crimp talked to Kevin Hilton about how the show’s digital platform will allow the conference programme to go ahead and enable people to still be involved. he International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) has grown considerably from the first show in 1967. Since moving to Amsterdam in 1992 and later becoming an annual event it has developed to encompass technology and products beyond broadcast television and radio. This is illustrated by Hall 12 (previously Hall 11) becoming dedicated to filmmaking equipment. After cancelling the scheduled 2020 show due to the COVID pandemic, IBC had been rescheduled so it could return to the RAI exhibition centre during December, rather than its traditional September slot. IBC 2021 was to have been a live, on-site exhibition with a
strong online component. Speaking before the Netherlands government imposed a partial lockdown in November due to rising infection rates, which ultimately led to the cancellation of this year’s event, IBC chief executive Mike Crimp said the virtual conference and product focus sessions held last year “went down quite well”, with the shift from a physical show being facilitated by the already established IBC365 publishing platform. “We were able to move on to it quite quickly and the market seemed OK with what we did,” he commented. Crimp added that IBC has invested in its digital operations to create an online presence that can be expanded to host a hybrid event. “Everyone’s talking about hybrid and there are different views of it,” he said. “Our definition is that the IBC Digital platform runs interconnected with the physical show [when it is held]. [There will be] content on stages and that will be available on the digital platform. People will be able to interact whether they are there or not.” IBC Digital - which has been running after launching on 21 October - is based on the XPro virtual event platform, which uses AI to create personalised recommendations. It will enable conference participants and others to ‘beam’ into sessions and presentations. “We want to take the exhibition and the content programme out to the world and allow the world back in,” explains Crimp, “either beamed in because they’ve got a contribution or want to network.” >> www.britishcinematographer.co.uk

IBC Digital will allow people to organise one-to-one or group meetings with participating companies before, during and after the dates originally given for the Convention (3-6 December). They will also be able to access exhibitor profiles, in addition to looking at the latest company news, download content and view details of the latest products.
The conference and content programme will still provide access to presentations from industry leaders, panel debates, technical paper presentations and technology masterclasses. Among the confirmed keynote speakers [at the time of going to press] are: Johannes Larcher, head of international at HBO Max; Vincent Tauzia, vice president of partnership, Netflix; Superna Kalle, president of international networks, Starz; and Bob Hesskamp, executive vice president, WarnerMedia. Crimp sees the hybrid approach of a physical exhibition in tandem with an interactive online presence as the future of trade shows. “It needs to be part of it because there’s an opportunity for shows like IBC to extend their reach beyond those who can physically attend,” he explained. “We’ll be able to extend the life of IBC as well. The show has always seen itself as the centre of a community where everyone comes together
for five days. It would be great if we could provide the industry with knowledge and expertise beyond the five days. That’s why we originally launched IBC365. What happened in the last 18 months has accelerated some of the thinking and we would like to make it central to what we do in the future. It’s difficult to know but I don’t see hybrid going away immediately.” The hope of Mike Crimp, the IBC organisation and the industry at large was that this year’s show would allow people to come together in one place, meet up and generally discuss the future of the broadcast technology sector. While that physical, personal aspect will have to wait for at least another year, IBC is still positioning itself as both a showcase for the latest developments and a forum to discuss how the industry will recover in the future. “It’s going to be an interesting time for the industry and everyone wants to get back on track and address the issues [facing broadcasting],” Crimp concluded. “A couple of years before the pandemic there was a lot of focus on 4K and 8K but now I think that efficiency, particularly in relation to the cloud, is driving buying decisions. Product round-up Aputure Nova P600c
There were some big names missing from the exhibitor list for this year’s IBC, but there were still many well-known filmmaking and cinema-related companies due to be at the RAI in Amsterdam before the event moved online. British Cinematographer has compiled a round-up of recent or new products from some of the key manufacturers and distributors.

JA Video has been prolific in recent months with several new product releases. The highest profile of these is the BRIDGE NDI 3G, a 1RU SDI to NewTek’s NDI video over IP protocol converter. The gateway supports multi-channel 4K and HD workflows and is aimed at broadcast, production, and pro AV applications that need to move between different platforms, protocols, and connectivity types. Also new are firmware updates for the AJA OG-DANTE-12GAM and KUMO, plus T-TAP Pro compatibility with the Autodesk Flame system. Broadcast and AV cable and infrastructure product specialist Argosy will use IBC as a showcase for its new a range of connectors and tooling from Simply45. These are designed for CAT 6, CAT 6A and CAT 7 installations, with the aim of making wiring simpler and cheaper. Connecters for the Simply45 series are approved by HDBaseT, the global
standard for the transmission of ultra-highdefinition video and audio, Ethernet, controls, USB and up to 100W of power over a single, long-distance cable. Aputure’s most recent product launches include the Nova P600c, Light Storm (LS) 1200d Pro, LS 600x Pro lighting fixtures. The Nova P600c is the latest addition to the Nova family of LED panels, and offers 2,000K~10,000K CCT and soft light quality, plus a new suite of professional-level controls; LS 1200d Pro is claimed to be the brightest fixture in the Aputure and LS ranges, with a 1200W daylight COB chipset and an 83,100+ lux output at 3 meters using the Hyper Reflector (Narrow); and the LS 600x Pro has a bi-colour range of 2700K~6500K and features a native Hyper-Reflector, with the option of the F10 Fresnel modifier. Astera, a specialist in wireless LEDs, last year launched the NYX Bulb, named after the female personification of night in Greek mythology, is a colour tuneable LED fixture the same size as a standard LED bulb. It features a CRMX receiver for wireless DMX connectivity, plus RF and Bluetooth modules for control on a smartphone or tablet using the Astera App. The PixelBrick is a multifunctional light source designed for concerts, events, and broadcast as well as filming. It is compact and light, IP65 rated and has 450 Lumens and 1200 Lux at two metres. Atomos launched several products during 2020-21, most recently new monitors for the Ninja family product range. As well as the Ninja V+ and the Shinobi 7 on-camera recorders, there will be the NEON 17 and NEON 24 units plus the new AtomX CAST live switching and streaming device for the Ninja V. B&H Photo Video Audio’s porfolio for the cinema and TV markets includes digital cameras such as the Canon EOS range, LED, tungsten, and HMI lighting and DZO cine lenses. Blackmagic Design produces a range of digital cinema cameras, plus the DaVinci Resolve software package for video editing, audio editing and mixing, visual effects and colour management and grading. The latest version of Resolve adds a processing engine that makes operations three times faster on Apple Mac models running with the M1 chip. It is now possible to playback, edit and grade 4K projects quicker, with the potential to work on 8K projects using an Apple M1 notebook. Canon has been celebrating ten years of the Cinema EOS range by showcasing the EOS C500 Mark II, a full-frame camera launched in 2019 that features a CMOS sensor with a 15+ stop and a wide colour space, which the manufacturer sees as suited to HDR productions; plus the COS C70 and EOS R5. >> www.britishcinematographer.co.uk

Godox recently won a TIPA World Award for Best Portable Flash at PHOTOPIA Hamburg for the AD100Pro. This is a small, portable strobe that is able to deliver 1/8000 high speed sync, plus control of multiple flash set-ups through an optional 32-channel wireless transmitter. Other lighting fixtures in the Godox range include continuous LED lights in various formats. IDX Technology manufactures and supplies of Lithium Ion battery/power systems, HD wireless video transmission technology, V-Mount hardware and the V-Plate adapter for the broadcast and professional video markets. Among recent products are the A-DCFX9 V-Mount adapter for the Sony FX9, which converts the attached battery to work with the 19.5V supply as required by the camera, providing supplies power via the DC input; and the Imicro-98 and Imicro-150 micro batteries. >>

Product round-up including LED lights and a new range of grip equipment, which includes stands. Among its lighting fixtures are ring lights, RGB panels, light panels, and the Star Light. Spirit Lab will give a first IBC showing the 70-300mm T3.2 zoom lens. Launched last year, this optical is full frame with zero distortion, minimised breathing effect and good parfocality. Shenzhen ST Video-Film Technology produces a wide range of products for filmmaking, including Jimmy Jib and Andy Jib camera cranes, crane accessories, wireless transmission systems, tripod and heads, LED screens, batteries, and a night vision camera. Thales (Angenieux) starting introduced its full range of Optimo Prime lenses last year, with the latest appearing this spring. These were designed for professional full frame cinematography. It also complements Angenieux’s Optimo Ultra 12x zooms. The Optimo Prime Silver Set series comprises six lenses, including the 21mm, 28mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm and 135mm focal lengths. The following six focal lengths, 18mm, 24mm, 32mm, 60mm,100mm and 200mm. True Lens Services is well known for its work in repairing and rehousing lenses. It also develops lens ranges, with the most recent being the Vega series. These were developed in response to the growing demand for lenses to operate with larger full frame digital camera formats. The set consists of ten lenses, including 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm,
58mm, 85mm, 105mm, 135mm and 200mm focal lengths, ranging from T1.5 to T2. Netherlands-based distributor Vocas will be at its local show with a selection of products in the cine, video, lighting, and lens sectors. Among the latest additions to its portfolio are the Blackmagic Design Pocker 6K Pro, RED Digital Cinema Komodo 6k and V-Raptor, Sony Cinema Line FX6 and the Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Plus. Camera control systems specialist Telemetrics’ technology featured at this year’s Tokyo Olympics and will be featured at IBC. Among the company’s products are the RCCP-2A-STS controller, PT-RT-2 pan tilt head, Televator (EP8) elevation column and Teleglide (TG-4) track and trolley system. Tokina Cinema is known for its Vista series of ultra-fast, large format Primes, the full range of zooms and the 100mm Marco, a 1:1 optical built for costAstera PixelBrick effective shooting.
Camera movement specialist XD Motion’s product ranges include the ARCAM motion control robotic camera system, pan-tilt-zoom remote control, augmented reality 3D engine, X fly 3D cablecam, and tethered drone. Lens manufacturer Xeen CF compact and flexible cine Prime lens series comprises five focal lengths (16mm T2.6, 24mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5 and 85mm T1.5) that are compatible with PL, Canon EF, and Sony E mounts. Zanus designs mechatronic devices for specific purposes, which include camera systems. Z CAM was launched in 2015 with the Z CAM E1, at the time claimed to be the world’s smallest 4K, MFT interchangeable lens mount camera.
