It’s an exciting time, after all – there are endless opportunities, right on your doorstep. You could start earning qualifications and money with an Apprenticeship, get a taste of the working world with a Diploma, carry on learning at college and more. In this first issue, we focus on some of the most booming sectors in London, like Business & Finance, IT, and Transport & Logistics, and explain how to take the first step on a career path. You’ve got the world at your feet Apprentice Technical Engineers There are big, bright possibilities out there for people like you. So why not make the most of them with British Gas? Many of our senior managers started off as apprentices and our investment in training and retaining our people means that nearly 92 percent are still with us five years after joining. Once qualified, you’ll be responsible for running your own day, so you’ll need to be customer focused and self reliant. Work it! Work-based learning gives you the chance to learn and earn – and give your career a real headstart If you know what career you want to pursue, why not start working towards it? Work-based learning is a great way to learn the exact skills needed to do your job. You earn a nationally-recognised qualification, like an NVQ, which all employers value. In addition to industry-specific work, you’ll also learn important transferable skills like communication skills, teamwork and how to meet deadlines. Work-based learning courses are designed to fit around you and your employers needs. This means you could agree with your employer to leave work to study one day a week at college, attend workshops or take up evening classes.

Apprenticeships

One of the most popular types of work-based learning is an Apprenticeship, which lets you learn while working and earning money. Apprenticeships are a recognised route into most sectors. There are more than 180 Apprenticeships available in over 80 sectors including Business, Engineering, Media and more. Apprenticeships can lead to qualifications like an NVQ, a BTEC qualification, or National Certificates. They can take anywhere from one to three years to finish – it all depends on which one you decide to take. To be qualified for an Apprenticeship, you can’t be in full time education and have to be at least 16 years old. Foundation degrees

This is a higher education vocational work-based qualification that helps you build up your practical skills and knowledge in the workplace. You don’t need the traditional qualifications to do one.

TfST

If you’re already working but your job doesn’t offer training, you could be eligible for something called Time Off for Study or Training (TfST). You can qualify if you are 16 or 17 and did not get any Level 2 qualifications at school (like GCSEs at grades A*-C or NVQ Level 2). TfST entitles you to reasonable paid time off during normal working hours to study or train for an approved Level 2 qualification that will help improve your future employment prospects.

What’s my career?

It’s okay if you haven’t figured out what you want to be when you grow up yet. If you’re unsure about a career, you don’t have to take the plunge into an Apprenticeship. Here are some good ways to explore careers while keeping your options open. • 14-19 Diplomas – these qualifications are linked to 14 broad sectors. A mixture of classroom time and work experience, the Diploma gives you the knowledge and skills needed for a sector of work and can open up other options too. • Foundation Learning – these manageable courses help you figure out what you want to study, and how you want to study it. All courses are at entry level or Level 1 and gives you the grounding to move up to Level 2 qualifications. • Work experience/volunteering – an easy way to test out a career is to try it out for a week. Volunteering and work experience give you first hand knowledge of what a job is really like – it can help you make a decision.

Your choice Some helpful tips to find the course that works for you...

What’s your style? Everyone has a different learning style. Some people like studying books while others prefer hands on learning. It’s important to choose the type of learning that suits you! There are three main types:

Where can I study? There are differen t options, each wi th its own structure, atm osphere and cour ses on offer.

Work-based learning

Ready to start working? This type of learning involves on-the-job practical training and work towards a nationally recognised qualification, like an NVQ. You usually get assessed through observation while you work. Example: Apprenticeship

Vocationally-related learning

If you want a little bit of everything, this type of course is a mixture of hands on learning, classroom learning and work experience. You’ll get assessed through coursework, tests and exams. Example: Diploma

Academic learning

Comfortable in the classroom? Academic learning is studying the theory of a subject and can involve projects, fieldwork or experiments. You’ll be assessed mainly on written exams, plus some coursework. Example: A levels

• Sixth forms You could study at your own scho ol’s sixth form or bran ch out to a sixth for m college. Sixth form colleges are usua lly bigger and more laid back than scho ol sixth forms – plus, you’ll have the chance to meet ne w people. • Further educat ion colleges These can offer similar courses to sixth form colleges. Yo ur fellow students may include adult s of all ages as we ll as young people. • Specialist colle ges Some further ed ucation colleges specialise in partic ular areas, such as art and design, ag riculture or drama.

Brad’s a winner! Bradley Smith, 20, began his first course at London College of Beauty Therapy in 2006 when he was just 15. After finding school difficult, he came to LCBT one day a week on a Schools Programme, designed to focus his studies while learning new beauty therapy skills, something that has always been of interest for Bradley. He said “The schools programme gave me the foundati ons I needed to do everything I have done since. I don’t feel I would have had the same experiences if I hadn’t enrolled on the programme at LCBT.” In 2008, Bradley returned to LCB T to gain his Level 2 NVQ in Beauty Therapy after wor king in the industry for a year as a salon junior. He wan ted to be sure that he was making the right decision and to get a feel for what it would be like as a fully qua lified therapist. This year Bradley completed his Leve l 3 NVQ Beauty Therapy and went on to win the Prid e of LCBT Award at the LCBT student awards ceremony as his determination to succeed at colle ge and within the beauty industry has been inspiratio nal. “Before starting at LCBT I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with myself and would prob ably have ended up without any skills or qualification s. I am now at University studying Beauty Salon Management and without my NVQs this would not be possible.” When Bradley finishes his degree, he hopes to open his own salon. I did it and I loved it… Safra Siddique followed her dream of becoming a Montessori Teacher. My country of origin, Sri Lanka, is highly influenced by Montessori. I attended a Montessori nursery as a child and there are lots of Montessori schools on the island. Montessori is the world’s largest global education system. There are over 600 UK nurseries and 22,000 worldwide. It is a holistic, child-centred approach to education and enables the child to learn indepen dently, at his or her own pace. The resources in a Mon tessori classroom are beautiful and the atmosphere is breathtaking. I am studying in London at Montess ori Centre International. It offers a new Mon tessori Foundation degree and means I graduate with a Montessori specialism. The qualification is dua l which means you have a level 4 and 5 qualifica tion (CWDC). It is in partnership with London Metropo litan University. After completing the two year cou rse at MCI, I will study at London Metropolitan Univ ersity on the BA (Hons) degree course in Early Chil dhood Studies. The Foundation degree is full-time . You are in college three days a week and a Montess ori nursery for two days. There is college, coursework and written and practical exams. Being in a Montess ori nursery is an essential part of the course, as wor king with children gives you hands on experience and allows you to put all your Montessori theory into prac tice. I have made lots of friends on the course and all the tutors here are friendly and helpful. Montessori teachers are in greater demand today than ever before! Graduate of Holts Academy and stone setter for celebrity jewellery designer Shaun Leane Stephen Webb, an NVQ graduate was recently rewarded with a five-year Goldsmiths’ Company apprenticeship as a stone setter with Shaun Leane, one of the UKs most innovative designers who has designed and made jewellery for high profile celebrities like Danni Minogue and Cheryl Cole. Designed by the jewellery industry, for the jewellery industry, Holts Aca demy has a wealth of experience in training the trade’s next generation of talent. This is what attracted Stephen Webb to join the NVQ Level 2 Jewellery Manufacture programme. Throughout his studies he used a wide variety of precious metals including silve r, gold and platinum. He learnt various processe s of jewellery manufacture, including wax carving, polishing and stone setting. The course culminate d in a design project that was shown at the reno wned Platform Showcase in Hatton Garden, the centre of the UK jewellery industry. “The NVQ provided me with the skill s and knowledge that I needed to apply for an apprenticeship. Even before I star ted on the course I was most interested in stone sett ing and that was the part I enjoyed the most. With very few apprenticeships available now, I was able to prove my abilities by having the qualifica tion.” Stephen is now working with high profile jewellery designers, specialising in incorpor ating beautiful precious diamonds and gemston es into jewellery. Money makes the world go round in this suited and booted sector. If you have ambition and a head for numbers, you could set out for a very rewarding career in the financial capital of the world! Put simply, the business and finance sector is about money – saving it, borrowing it, managing it and most of all, making lots more of it. It’s the UK’s most global industry and covers a wide range of services and products that everyone uses like bank accounts, mortgages, pensions, credit cards and insurance. The perk of working with money is that salaries tend to be higher than average. Here are some of the main areas within the sector:

Accountancy

Accountants keep track of companies and individuals’ finances so they can manage their money properly. Depending on their client’s needs, they might produce account reports, forecast future profits, calculate tax or audit accounts. All organisations – from football clubs to supermarkets – need accountants, so they can work in many different sectors. Entry-level role: accounts clerk, trainee accountant. Starting salary: £14,000 - £17,000.

Banking

The world would screech to a halt without banks. We need them to manage our money, give loans, exchange money and more. There are three types: retail banking (like your local HSBC or Lloyds), Corporate banking (banking services for businesses) and wholesale banking (large transactions for big clients like governments and other international banks). Entry-level role: customer service adviser, bank cashier. Starting salary: £10,500 - £16,000 a year.

Financial advice

It’s not just for the wealthy – everybody needs financial advice at some point. Financial advisers helps people make the most out of their money, whatever they have. A career in financial advice is about working with people to plan their financial goals, whether that’s choosing a mortgage, investing their savings or planning for their retirement. Entry-level role: insurance technician, customer service adviser in a bank or building society. Starting salary: around £17,000.

London focus If you want to get into this sector, then there’s no better place to be than right here in London. We’re a major international hub for business, insurance and finance. In fact, The City rivals New York as the financial capital of the world. The London Stock Exchange, Lloyds of London and the Bank of England are all based here, plus countless other businesses.

Young Apprenticeship

If you’re in Year 10 or 11, you could experience workplace life in business and finance with this two-year vocational learning programme. You’ll spend two days a week on the programme and the rest in school as usual. This is a great way to build a strong foundation before moving on to an Apprenticeship at 16. The benefits: You’ll get a level 2 vocational qualification, work experience and the skills that employers are looking for.

14-19 Diploma in Business, Administration and Finance

This qualification gives you the chance to develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in business, or to progress onto further/higher education. The course gives you a look into the many different careers within the sector. The benefits: You’ll learn more about the industry and become qualified to get a job or move on to further education.

Apprenticeships

There are several Apprenticeships that will get you qualified in this sector. The Business & Administration Apprenticeship covers all the skills needed to start a career in the office. On the finance side of things, there are a few options: Payroll, Accounting and Providing Financial Services. The benefits: You’ll earn a salary while picking up the right qualifications for the job.

“After my A Levels I knew that I didn’t want to go to university so I decided to enrol on an apprenticeship programme at Redbridge College. I am able to work while I learn and I am learning new skills every day. I love my job as the people are so friendly, and I can’t sing my teacher’s praises enough. She is always there for me when I need help and she is very honest with all her students. “Studying for an NVQ is very different to anything I have ever done before but the course is laid out in a very simple way and my units are integrated into my daily tasks. I get to organise and prepare team meetings and learn how to use all the office equipment and programs. “If you’re not 100% sure about what you want to do after school then an apprenticeship is a great option – it’s a midway point between going to college and getting a job. You’ve still got the learning element but you’re also getting valuable work experience and getting paid for it. “The skills you learn are useful for whatever you decide to do after: you can do the college or uni thing, get a full-time job or even do a higher level Apprenticeship. You don’t have to go to university to train to be an accountant. Organisations like the ICAEW offer a training scheme for people who have completed their A-levels. Transport & logistics It’s all about movement – passengers travelling from A to B, goods being transported across the country, letters being sent across town, imports arriving in our ports from other countries...it’s truly a fast-moving industry! This diverse sector deals with the efficient movement of people and goods. It can be broken down into two major areas: ‘Transport’, which covers the people moving side of things like buses, trains, taxis, aeroplanes and the Underground – and ‘Logistics,’ which covers the movement of goods and products across the country and abroad. The UK transport industry is absolutely huge – it employs over 560,000 people across the different subsectors. Our logistics industry is worth £14.5 billion and employs around 2.3 million people in over 195,000 companies. Both transport and logistics industries require skilled mechanics to keep the vehicles running, drivers to operate the vehicles safely, and organised people behind the scenes keeping the whole operation running to schedule. Here are some of the main areas within this sector:

Rail transport operations

It’s no simple feat to keep our railway network running to schedule – we need people to drive the trains, take fares, assist customers, operate the signals and more. You could work for the Underground or above ground. Earnings: Around £13,000 a year.

Airports

It takes more than pilots to keep plane passengers safe – air traffic controllers help planes land safely and baggage handlers make sure luggage reaches the right destination. Earnings: Between £14,000 and £17,000 a year.

Engineering and maintenance

Transport and logistics rely heavily on vehicles – trains, buses, aeroplanes, vans, cars and motorcycles – so the sector needs people with the skills to keep them running. You could learn how to service sections of rail or fix lorries, depending on your interests. Earnings: Between £16,000 and £19,000 a year.

Mail services

This deals with the collection, processing and delivery of mail and packages. The Royal Mail is the largest employer, but there are lots of other specialist mail providers like FedEx. You could sort in a processing centre or be out and about, making deliveries. Earnings: Between £12,500 and £17,000 a year.

Driving & carrying goods

This covers the transport and delivery of goods by both light vehicles (like motorcycles and van) and large goods vehicles (like lorries). Large goods vehicle driving requires a special type of driving license. Earnings: Between £10,500 and £12,500 a year.

Warehouse & storage

An essential part of transport and logistics, this area deals with the movement and storage of goods. It involves more than just lifting and moving things around – it takes organisation skills to manage inventory and specialist skills to operate forklifts and other machinery. Earnings: Around £13,000 a year.

London focus As the nation’s capital with millions of residents, London has an extensive public transportatio n sector – one that’s growing to accommodate the 2012 Games. Also, London’s logistics sector is worth abo ut £8 billion a year and employs 5% of the whole work force. So there’s lots of opportunities out there...

14-19 Diploma in Retail Business If you want to explore this sector without taking the plunge into a job right away, this Diploma could be the way forward. The benefit: After completing the Diploma, you could get an Apprenticeship, progress to another course, or start working in the industry.

PF Whitehead brings Apprenticeships back Croydon-based PF Whitehead is one of the UK’s largest transportation logistics providers. The company recalls the days when apprentice drivers were taken on regularly but this stopped once insurance premiums increased to make the apprenticeships non-viable. Now, thanks to SLB Logistics’ Apprenticeship Training Agency, a work placement for a young person has been found once more. Tom Coyne, 18, from South Norwood, has been carrying out warehouse and stock control duties since July and his enthusiasm and commitment has led to the firm expanding his tasks to include direct dealing with customers. “He’s a breath of fresh air around the place. He’s a good lad who wants to work,” says managing director Peter Whitehead. “He is now learning about the whole business and how the process operates.” Mr Whitehead says he cannot speak highly enough of the system operated by SLB Logistics which matches the apprentice to the firm, carries out all the HR tasks and pays the apprentice £95 per week. As for Tom, he is enjoying the experience of being part of the PF Whitehead team. “I heard about this apprenticeship scheme through a friend. This is a very good place to work. Store operations

One of the most exciting places to work, store operations is about delivering customer service. Sales assistants help customers in the shop and make the overall shopping experience better. Salary: starting between £11,000 and £15,000 a year.

Buying

Buyers are the people who choose what is sold in the shop, and buy the products directly from designers and wholesalers. It’s the buyers at Topshop, for example, who bring trends to the high street. Salary: starting between £16,000 and £20,000. With experience, you can earn over £45,000 a year.

Visual merchandising

Management

Telecoms

Skilled IT professionals are always in demand. There’s a wide range of career paths on offer and many of them are technical – however, lots of IT jobs involve working with other people in a team.

It’s a growing sector with lots of different career paths. You could be installing fibre optic broadband cables, selling contracts in a call centre or assisting customers in a mobile phone shop. Apprenticeships are a recognised way of progressing through this industry.

As you can imagine, almost every organisation and business out there uses computers as part of their daily operations. In the UK, 21 million people use IT at work every day! From hospitals and power stations to charities and banks, IT is found in all parts of life. The IT industry is all about computers and information systems – designing them, developing them, making them, selling them and installing them.

Here are some of the careers in IT: IT trainer – these people make courses to teach clients how to use computers and different applications. They train people of all abilities and backgrounds. Salary: starting around £18,000. Web designer – these designers use a mixture of technical and creative skills to build websites that look good, function well and are user-friendly. Salary: starting between £16,000 and £20,000. Software developer – these people design computer programmes and applications that help businesses work more effectively, such as bookkeeping software. Salary: starting between £20,000 and £26,000. Helpdesk assistant – offering support to IT users with technical difficulties. Salary: starting between £14,000 and £17,000.

Telecoms is a broad term for any technology that transmits information, like phone lines, broadband, TV, mobile phones and satellites. This industry includes internet suppliers, mobile phone companies and the big companies like BT and SKY who offer a wide range of services (phone + broadband + satellite TV) in one package.

Telecoms technician – the people who install, test and repair telecommunication systems like telephone and broadband cabling. Salary: starting between £12,000 and £15,000. Customer service – the people who assist contract holders and users with any enquires, from billing to technical problems. Salary: starting between £14,000 and £16,000.

London focus This sector is a major con tributor to the London eco nomy and is central to guiding it out of the recession. Be yond that, every business uses com puters so IT skills will ma ke you more employable. 14-19 Diploma in IT

If you think you might be interested in this sector but want to learn more, this Diploma can give you a broad view into the many different careers within IT. The benefit: You’ll get a good introduction to the sector and the foundation to get a job or carry on with further education.

Daniel left school not knowing which career he would end up in. He was hoping for a future in football, which didn’t end up quite how he planned. He started studying at a specialist Sports College but several months later decided to leave as he felt it wasn’t suitable for him. Unsure of what he wanted to do in life, he applied for an IT User Apprenticeship with Information Horizons in London, where he would gain a high level of knowledge, understanding and experience within both IT and business administration. Daniel enrolled on a Level 2 Apprenticeship in order to gain a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of IT and administration. Having successfully completed this at a rapid pace, he progressed to an Advanced IT User Apprenticeship, working as an Administrator at Information Horizons. On completion of his Advanced Apprenticeship, Daniel was offered full-time employment as Training Administrator with Information Horizons. He said “With the help of my family, friends and the staff at Information Horizons, I was able to gain a recognised IT qualification and secure a full-time job at the end of it. I owe a lot to the people who helped me throughout the course and I now feel comfortable and dedicated to working in this environment, hopefully, for many more years to come”. Construction It’s more than just bricks and mortar. The construction industry is worth billions and builds the world around us, from hospitals and houses to bridges and football stadiums. Be a part of it! Construction is one of the UK’s biggest industries and turns over billions of pounds a year. This sector is responsible for creating the buildings and structures we rely on – the houses we live in, the motorways we drive across, the stadiums we watch matches in, the bridges we cross, and so on. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of people working together to pull off major construction projects. Whether you like physical outdoor work or drawing technical plans in the office, there is a career path to suit everyone. Here are some of the most popular trades. You can get into all of these areas through a Construction Apprenticeship:

Salary Generally, tradespeople with a Level 2 qualification will earn around £325 a week and those with a Level 3 will earn close to £385 a week. If you choose to do a Construction Apprenticeship, you can expect to earn around £8,700 the first year, £11,600 the next, and £15,350 the third year.

Bricklaying

One of the most popular trades and Apprenticeships, bricklaying is about building and repair walls, using a range of materials and techniques.

Plastering

Applying wet and dry plaster finishes to constructed walls and ceilings.

Painting and decorating

Applying the finishing touch to surfaces, like wallpaper, gloss and emulsion.

Civil engineering

Civil engineering is about the design and construction of buildings and other important structures like pipelines, bridges, railways and roads. They provide technical support on construction projects.

London focus While the recession hit the construction industry pretty hard, things are starting to look up. The coming 2012 Games and new housing initiatives have helped the construction sector grow by 2% each year, so now’s a good time to get qualifications – you’ll be able to hit the ground running and take advantage of the new job opportunities.

Young Apprenticeship in Construction

If you’re in Year 10 or 11, you could experience workplace life in the construction industry with this two-year vocational learning programme. You’ll spend two days a week on the programme and the rest in school as usual. This is a great way to build a strong foundation before moving on to an Apprenticeship at 16. 14-19 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment

This qualification gives you a look into the many different careers within the built environment. The three main themes covered in this course are: • how the built environment is designed and constructed • modern construction methods and materials • management and maintenance You’ll gain work experience and start developing skills that are relevant to the industry, like how to promote a healthy lifestyle. Apprentice

This is one of the best ways to get into the industry. The Construction Apprenticeship Scheme is a two-year programme for a level 2 award, plus one more year for the Advanced Apprenticeship which will lead to a level 3 qualification. To apply, you’ll need to have found an employer that will sponsor you. Get in touch with your local Construction Skills office for job opportunities and vacancies in your area (see useful links box). Britain’s armed forces – the Army, Royal Navy, RAF and MoD – all invest a lot in their personnel to give them an education that’s relevant in the civilian world as well as in the services. They all offer Apprenticeships so recruits can earn nationally recognised trade qualifications alongside their regular training. For example, a cook for the Royal Navy could also complete a chef Apprenticeship. Each organisation offers different schemes, so visit their websites for more details. Salary: starting around £13,400 the first year, with excellent benefits and progression. Qualifications: the armed forces offer Apprenticeships in many areas, including Engineering, Fitting, Maintenance, Cookery, IT, Admin, Marine Engineering and more.

Creative, digital & media

This sector covers a range of exciting and creative careers in TV, film, graphics, publishing and journalism. Production assistants help out on television and film sets; graphic designers create adverts and billboards; journalists write news stories; publishers print books and magazines; and photographers shoot and edit images. If you thrive on a creative buzz, there’s no better industry to be in. Competition for jobs is high so work experience is highly recommended. Jobs: graphic designer, web designer, production assistant, editing assistant, photographer assistant. Salary: starting between £13,000 and £17,000. Customer service & admin

Any business that wants to be successful has to make its customers happy. From helping a shopper find the right size at Topshop to answering customer queries at a BT call centre, customer service jobs come in all shapes and sizes. Another thing businesses can’t function without is effective admin. Administrators are responsible for running the daily operations of the office. They answer the phone, input data, type up letters and anything else that needs to be done. Since administration and customer service are needed in most organisations, you could work across many different sectors. Job roles: admin assistant, office junior, personal assistant, customer service representative. Salary: starting anywhere between £13,000 and £18,000 a year. Qualifications: Young Apprenticeship in Business & Administration, Diploma in Business, Administration and Finance, Apprenticeships.

Energy & renewable

This essential sector deals with the utilities we rely on: water, electricity and gas. It also covers waste management and alternative sources of power like nuclear energy, wind power and solar energy. Careers in this sector cover the distribution and supply of gas; the generation and transmission of electricity; the collection and purification of water; the treatment of sewage; and nuclear fuel processing. Apprenticeships are a recognised route into this industry and offer excellent career progression. This broad sector offers lots of opportunities to make a difference to the planet, from farming and protecting wildlife to looking after parks and conservation. The main areas within this sector are: Horticulture & landscaping – creating and maintaining designed landscapes, like sports turf, gardens and parks. Agriculture – work in farms, dairies and companies that supply the industry. Animal care – handling and caring for animals, from small domestic pets to wildlife. Environmental conservation – finding solutions that will lead to a more sustainable, healthy environment. Land-based engineering – the design, manufacture and maintenance of agricultural equipment. This sector is about taking what’s grown by farmers and transforming it into our favourite foods and beverages. You could be processing ingredients, fixing machines on the production floor, processing meat, baking cakes or testing quality. Job roles: production operative, bottling operative, baker, warehouse worker. Salary: starting between £11,000 and £17,000 a year. This industry is all about helping people look good and feel even better about themselves. It’s a booming sector that makes billions each year. There are many different paths within this sector – hairdressing, nail services, beauty therapy, spa therapy – and all of them require common skills: creativity, the ability to work on your feet for long hours, good hand-eye co-ordination and up-to-date knowledge of what’s in (and what’s out).

Health & social care

From the cars on the motorway to the clothes in your wardrobe, many of the things we rely on have been manufactured. This sector is all about making things on a massive scale: cars, TVs, clothes, aeroplanes, fuel… it’s a very important industry. There are many career paths in the sector, from operating machinery that makes plastics or testing the quality of finished engine parts.

If you’ve got a big heart and want to work with people, then a career in Health and Social Care could be for you. This sector is about helping people live healthy, full lives. Health care covers careers in medicine (nurses, physiotherapists, dental nurses, etc) while social care is about supporting people with special needs to help them lead fuller lives. Most people in this sector work for the NHS while the rest are employed by private practices. Because healthcare is an essential part of our society, there’ll always be jobs on offer for qualified people. In fact, this is one sector that continues to thrive during recessions. This sector deals with all aspects of cars, vans and motorcycles – selling them, fixing them, servicing them and even rescuing stranded drivers. Sports coaches teach skills and techniques at all levels, from beginner to professional. Outdoor activity instructors help people enjoy themselves in the great outdoors and operations managers make sure gyms and leisure centres run smoothly. Job roles: personal trainer, fitness instructor, swimming coach, leisure centre assistant, playworker. Salary: starting around £12,000 and can rise to £25,000 with experience and qualifications. Travel & hospitality

This sector helps people enjoy themselves during their free time and holidays. People working in this industry arrange our holidays, cook for us in restaurants, serve drinks at the bar, and more. It’s a buzzing, exciting sector with many opportunities to work in the UK and abroad. You could be a chef, or even a member of air cabin crew! While working hours often take place when other people are enjoying themselves (evenings and weekends), many prefer escaping the typical 9-5 lifestyle. Jobs: travel agent, waiter, trainee chef, air cabin crewmember. Salary: starting between £11,000 and £16,000 a year. Apprenticeship Week – What’s it all about? (7 – 11 February)

There has never been a better time to start an Apprenticeship You earn while you learn, gain a variety of skills and work towards nationally recognised qualifications that enable you to progress in your chosen career. And the good news is funding for over 300,000 Apprenticeships will be provided by the Government each year for the next four years. The annual Apprenticeship Week takes place this year from 7-11 February and celebrates apprentices across the country. It is an excellent opportunity to find out more about Apprenticeships, so if you’re considering your future options and career path then why not go along to an event? At apprenticeships.org.uk you can find out what events are taking place near you. If you decide you are interested in applying for an Apprenticeship the website also provides the opportunity to search for Apprenticeship vacancies. At any one time there are around 9000 jobs available in a variety of industry sectors on the website. You can apply for as many as you like. Many young people consider an Apprenticeship because they want to learn on the job and earn a salary whilst still continuing to work towards qualifications. Research has shown that people with an Advanced Apprenticeship earn on average around £100,000 more over their lifetime than those with a qualification at Level 2 or below and in many cases Apprenticeships can also lead onto higher education.
