HELLO AGAIN! Welcome to the second instalment of the Open Doors Regional Training Prospectus. It’s a new year and a great time to focus on the exciting opportunities ahead – there are so many of them right here in your area. That’s where we come in… In this second issue, we focus on some different sectors in our region, like Construction, IT & Communications, Retail, Business & Finance and Sports & Fitness. As always, we’ve covered all the other main sectors out there too. We’ve also included an article on money matters you may need to consider when choosing a training provider or college course. Since it’s a new year, we thought it would be a good time to bring out our own new website – log on, and you can receive updates about opportunities in your region in between issues. There are plenty of other people in this Prospectus who can help you get ahead – learning providers, colleges, local councils and Connexions centres.

MONEY MATTERS When it comes to deciding on a training provider, Apprenticeship, job or college course, there are some things you might not have considered, like how much it will cost to get there each day. Here’s some information to help...

Travel costs Travel isn’t cheap, especially when you have to buy a roundtrip ticket to your college or training provider everyday. And the further from home you go, the more expensive it gets. The good news is that there’s help available. If you’re between 16 and 18 (or continuing a course you started before your 19th birthday), your local authority may be able to help you with the cost of transportation to your college or sixth form. The type of help you can get depends on where you live - each local authority decides what’s suitable for the area. They may look at your family’s income, judge how far you live from the nearest college where your course is available, and other factors. Visit your local council website for more information (they’re listed on our ‘useful links’ pages).

Something to think about...

Usually, the help with transportation costs is only for travel within your local council. The exception is if there isn’t a suitable course in your area. If you want to attend a college farther away when you could easily go nearby, you’ll probably have to foot your own travel bill. And that can add up.

Specialist cour ses

If you want to do a specialist course that’s not available in your loc al area, there are two possible ways to get help with the extra costs of studying away from home: • Choose a colle ge that offers reside ntial bursaries for certain course s – there are close to 50 specialist resident ial centres across the country that offer extra he lp for students wh o want to study a particular course that isn’t off ered in their local area. These centres tend to sp ecialise in agriculture, art an d design courses. You have to apply directly to th e college for finan cial help. If you’re thinking of choosing a course at a specialist college, then you should start apply ing in the Autumn term of Ye ar 11. • The Residentia l Support Scheme – if the specialist college you want to go to isn’t part of the resident ial bursary schem e, don’t worry – you can sti ll apply for the Re sidential Support Scheme, which helps pay for term time accommodation if your college is too far away for you to travel there from home.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships involve working for an employer while studying for a qualification part time with a training provider or college (usually on day release). One of the great things about Apprenticeships is that you don’t have to pay for the training. As long as you’re between 16 and 18, your studies are 100% paid for by the government. The new National Minimum Wage means that all apprentices will be paid at least £2.50/hour. However, as your skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages – research shows that apprentices usually take home £170 a week.

Something to think about...

Apprentices aren’t eligible for help with transport costs, so this is definitely something to consider when choosing an Apprenticeship. You’ll have to get to both your employer and your place of study.

Young parents

Discretionary Support Funds These funds help anyon e over 16 who has trouble meeting the costs of further education at college or sixth form. They’re available through the col lege or school sixth form and can be use d for travel costs, course-related eq uipment or accommodation costs. Schools and colleges set their own criteria, which means the amou nts available may differ between institution s. If you qualify, the funding could be a direct payment to you or a payment to som eone else on your behalf. The payment cou ld be a loan that you’ll have to pay back, or a grant, which you won’t.

I work at Smith and Byford, a large specialist building services engineering firm. I work with one engineer at a time then change so I can learn the different things. At first I could only change radiator valves, cut flues, run condense pipes from the boiler and make good. As different engineers let me do more, I could decommission boilers, cylinders and storage hea ters, install radiators, cylinders, boilers and run pipe work, power flushes on old systems and reconfig ure H systems. I have also changed pump valves and 3 ports. I am currently the only female app rentice/engineer in my company and the first ever on installations. There has been an occasion at work whe re a client wanted a female to carry out the work nee ded (servicing of her boiler) in her house. I have now become confident in my technical skills and in dealing with colleagues and clients. I was awarded The John Coleman Trophy, at the Surrey County Apprenticeships Awa rds 2009 and was a Finalist for London Apprentice of the Year 2010. I have already completed my Plum bing Apprenticeship Level 2 at Nescot and I’m currently studying the Advanced Plumbing Apprenticeship Level 3. DV8 sparked it all for Reuben Dv8 is a youth training organisation based in London and Brighton that specializes in delivering innovative training projects to young people aged 14-19 in creative and media. All courses offer qualifications to recognise achievement and cover different creative areas such as music technology, fashion, design, mag azine journalism, animation and video. Dv8 also support progression into further education and employment through 1:1 sess ions, group support and regular follow up calls . Many of our learners progress onto college and continue to be successful following our courses. Here’s Reuben’s story: Before attending Dv8 Reuben was educated at home with limited opportunities to participate in group activities. Reuben had an inter est in music and wanted to gain some qualification s to increase his chances of finding a college plac ement. Rueben attended our 14-16 Music production course for two years, allowing him to gain the skills needed to make his own music, exp lore his creative potential and meet other musician s to collaborate with as well as build a portfolio of music. This portfolio of new work along with a supporting reference from Dv8 staff secured Reuben a place on the Music Production BTEC Nati onal Diploma at Northbrook College. By the end of his Dv8 programme Reuben had starred in his own music video, crea ted loads of new tunes and achieved qualifications that helped him move on positively. Achieving the Silver Arts Award really helped boost Reubens’ qua lifications and allowed him to recognise his achieve ments One year on and Reuben is continuin g his studies at Northbrook College. Reuben passed his first year with distinction and hopes to move onto a Music Production Foundation Degree following his seco nd year. Jayne heads for success with apprenticeship Jayne, 18, gained a number of GCSEs when she left school and decided to progress her career as an apprentice. At the time, she had only gained work experience as a shop assistant in a local post office. When Jayne joined TNG as an apprentice, she worked enthusiastically all the way through not once regretting her decision to go into further education. As an apprent ice, she worked alongside another administrator and soon gained the necessary skills to be responsible for her own work. She has since completed the first steps on the Business Administration Apprentices hip course and achieved her Level 2 qualifica tion. Jayne found this helped her to build up her con fidence and knowledge in business administratio n. Jayne is now on Level 3 and inten ds to complete her Business Administration Advance Apprenticeship to further enhance her knowledge as an administrator along with learning different aspects of the job role. Jayne believes completing the App renticeship with TNG was the best thing she could have done and would recommend the programme to anyone. CONSTRUCTION It’s more than just bricks and mortar. The construction industry is worth billions and builds the world around us, from hospitals and houses to bridges and football stadiums. Be a part of it! Construction is one of the UK’s biggest industries and turns over billions of pounds a year. This sector is responsible for creating the buildings and structures we rely on – the houses we live in, the motorways we drive across, the stadiums we watch matches in, the bridges we cross, and so on. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of people working together to pull off major construction projects. Whether you like physical outdoor work or drawing technical plans in the office, there is a career path to suit everyone. Here are some of the most popular trades. You can get into all of these areas through a Construction Apprenticeship:

Salary Generally, tradespeople with a Level 2 qualification will earn around £325 a week and those with a Level 3 will earn close to £385 a week. If you choose to do a Construction Apprenticeship, you can expect to earn around £8,700 the first year, £11,600 the next, and £15,350 the third year.

Bricklaying

One of the most popular trades and Apprenticeships, bricklaying is about building and repairing walls, using a range of materials and techniques.

Plastering

Applying wet and dry plaster finishes to constructed walls and ceilings.

Painting and decorating

Applying the finishing touch to surfaces, like wallpaper, gloss and emulsion.

Civil engineering

Civil engineering is about the design and construction of buildings and other important structures like pipelines, bridges, railways and roads. They provide technical support on construction projects.

Joinery

The building and installation of wood products, such as floors, staircases, doors and roof trusses.

Scaffolding

Building safe working platforms for construction workers to use when working on buildings and other structures.

Surveying

Building surveyors give detailed advice on the construction, design and maintenance of proposed or existing buildings.

SOUTH EAST focus The construction sector has been continually on the rise here, which means good news for future construction hopefuls! There are a variety of sub-sectors in construction that you can work in, from repair and maintenance to public housing and industrial. The biggest sub-sector here is repair and maintenance, even bigger than the national average in fact; 50% of construction is in this sub-sector.

• Architects and technical engineers are by far the most common job roles in construction here • The South East has a higher-than-average number of plumbers, plasterers, floorers, clerical and managers

If you’re in Year 10 or 11, you could experience workplace life in the construction industry with this two-year vocational learning programme. 14-19 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment

This qualification gives you a look into the many different careers within the built environment. The three main themes covered in this course are: • How the built environment is designed and constructed • Modern construction methods and materials • Management and maintenance You’ll gain work experience and start developing skills that are relevant to the industry, The benefits: You’ll learn more about the industry and become qualified to get a job or move on to further education.

Apprentice

This is one of the best ways to get into the industry. The Construction Apprenticeship Scheme is a two-year programme for a level 2 award, plus one more year for the Advanced Apprenticeship which will lead to a level 3 qualification. To apply, you’ll need to have found an employer that will sponsor you. Get in touch with your local Construction Skills office for job opportunities and vacancies in your area (see useful links box). The benefits: You’ll earn a salary while picking up the right qualifications for the job (either a Construction Award or a National Certificate).

Kier Facilities Services working with BCOT to give Apprentices a great future Kier Facilities Services are part of the Kier Group, they are an international construction company who design, build and service all types of construction and offer trade apprenticeships to individuals looking for vocational training. An apprenticeship is just a start of training as the training will continue throughout your working life. People do need to be challenged. You will finish your apprenticeship and you will be qualified, but this is just the first part of becoming an engineer. You will learn not just trade skills but also key life skills – respect, time keeping, and financial house keeping. These skills will help you in the transition from school leaver to young adult and in your future life. An apprenticeship offers the best of both worlds – a formal qualification and college training, along with hands on training in your chosen field. At present Kier have nine apprentices at various stages of their training and in various trades. The majority of these are studying through BCOT. Kier have regular meetings with the BCOT apprenticeship department who mentor the apprentices. The training consultants at BCOT also have regular meetings with the apprentices to monitor progress, through both the college and the workplace and offer advice and feedback. The training consultant assigned to an apprentice usually stays with the apprentice throughout their apprenticeship, offering consistent support. Skilled IT professionals are always in demand. There’s a wide range of career paths on offer and many of them are technical – however, lots of IT jobs involve working with other people in a team.

It’s a growing sector with lots of different career paths. You could be installing fibre optic broadband cables, selling contracts in a call centre or assisting customers in a mobile phone shop. Apprenticeships are a recognised way of progressing through this industry.

As you can imagine, almost every organisation and business out there uses computers as part of their daily operations. In the UK, 21 million people use IT at work every day! From hospitals and power stations to charities and banks, IT is found in all parts of life. The IT industry is all about computers and information systems – designing them, developing them, making them, selling them and installing them.

Here are some of the careers in IT: IT trainer – these people make courses to teach clients how to use computers and different applications. They train people of all abilities and backgrounds. Salary: starting around £18,000. Web designer – these designers use a mixture of technical and creative skills to build websites that look good, function well and are user-friendly. Salary: starting between £16,000 and £20,000. Software developer – these people design computer programmes and applications that help businesses work more effectively, such as bookkeeping software. Salary: starting between £20,000 and £26,000. Helpdesk assistant – offering support to IT users with technical difficulties. Salary: starting between £14,000 and £17,000.

Telecoms is a broad term for any technology that transmits information, like phone lines, broadband, TV, mobile phones and satellites. This industry includes internet suppliers, mobile phone companies and the big companies like BT and SKY who offer a wide range of services (phone + broadband + satellite TV) in one package.

Telecoms technician – the people who install, test and repair telecommunication systems like telephone and broadband cabling. Salary: starting between £12,000 and £15,000. Customer service – the people who assist contract holders and users with any enquires, from billing to technical problems. Salary: starting between £14,000 and £16,000.

SOUTH EAST focus

The IT and telecoms sec tor isn’t just a sector on its own, IT is used in most job roles in some way. It is beneficia l to have IT skills as they are required for a lot of different jobs in various sectors. Our region has the bigges t share of this sector. Th e good news is that the number of emplo yees in this sector is exp ected to grow by 2.5 times the region ’s average, with an estima ted 110,000 IT professionals needed in the next 5 years.

You have to take ICT until the end of Year 11, but you can also study for a Single or Double Award GCSE in ICT and Applied ICT. It’s also offered as a GCSE examination.

Apprenticeships

If you’re aged 16 or over, you could take an Apprenticeship in IT Services & Development, Telecoms, or IT User. You’ll do half your learning on the job and half in the classroom with a college or training provider, picking up qualifications along the way. RETAIL It’s not just about working on a till – the Retail sector offers a range of career paths, from managing a shop to creating shop window displays Everyone loves to shop, which is why this sector turns over more than £321 billion a year in the UK. Retail is about the sale of products and services to consumers (that’s people like you). It covers high street shops, supermarkets, independent shops, large national chains and more. It’s also one of the most fun and young industries out there, with more than one third of the workforce under 25 years old. So what can you do in retail? Lots! Whether your strength is creativity or organisation, there’s a role for you. Here are the main areas in the sector:

Store operations

One of the most exciting places to work, store operations is about delivering customer service. Sales assistants help customers in the shop and make the overall shopping experience better. Salary: starting between £11,000 and £15,000 a year.

Buying

Buyers are the people who choose what is sold in the shop, and buy the products directly from designers and wholesalers. It’s the buyers at Topshop, for example, who bring trends to the high street. Salary: starting between £16,000 and £20,000. With experience, you can earn over £45,000 a year.

Visual merchandising

From window displays to mannequin dressing, this creative career is about making visual displays to catch the customer’s eye. Salary: starting between £12,000 and £16,000 a year.

Management

From managing a shop to overseeing a region of national chains, store managers are needed to keep things running smoothly and profitably. Salary: starting between £16,000 and £20,000, while managers of large stores can make £40,000 or more.

11% of the South East’s workforce is employed in retail. There are several courses you can take to help start your career in Retail. Once you’ve gained some experience, there are plenty of high level qualifications to further your career.

Fiona Drayton/age19/Level 3 Diploma

Young Apprenticeships

If you’re in Year 10 or 11, you could find out what it’s like working in Retail with this two-year vocational learning programme. You’ll do 50 days of work experience along with your usual National Curriculum studies. The benefit: You’ll get real work experience and a recognised vocationally related qualification.

Apprenticeships

The Retail Apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles in retail, from visual merchandising to sales. You’ll get a job with an employer (for example, a national chain like Superdrug) and do half your learning on the job, and half in the classroom with a college or training provider. The benefit: You’ll earn a salary while you get a qualification and have excellent career progression.

Diploma in Retail Business

This brand new Diploma gives you the chance to learn about the many operations within the retail sector, including buying, visual merchandising and stock control. On this course, you’ll do an extended project, at least 10 days of work experience per year, as well as English, maths and ICT. You’ll also get to do specialist learning in a retail area of your choice, like food retailing or fashion retailing. The benefit: At the end, you’ll be qualified for a job in the industry, or to go on to further education.

Traineeships

Many of the big national chains (like M&S, Tesco and Sainsbury) run special training schemes for school leavers – lots of them are linked in with a management option. Entry requirements vary with each scheme – check the websites of shops for more information. The benefit: You’ll learn on the job while making money. If you get on a management scheme, you could be earning around £40,000 after gaining qualifications.

The FRA has prepared me in many ways for my career in fashion retail. The classes have given me insight to the behind the scenes operations of the retail business. It has given me an understanding of the pieces of the puzzle that get clothes for a retailers target market into stores. The best experience of the FRA has been the trips, the college fashion shows and the whole experience has been a pleasure. At the FRA the tutors are always there to help you and guide you in the right direction. The college is relaxed and has a different environment to most sixth form colleges. The Fashion Retail Academy is fun, exciting and empowering. I am hoping to continue studying at the FRA and do a Level 4 Diploma in Buying and Merchandising. Money makes the world go round in this suited and booted sector. If you have ambition and a head for numbers, you could set out for a very rewarding career in the financial capital of the world! Put simply, the business and finance sector is about money – saving it, borrowing it, managing it and most of all, making lots more of it. It’s the UK’s most global industry and covers a wide range of services and products that everyone uses like bank accounts, mortgages, pensions, credit cards and insurance. The perk of working with money is that salaries tend to be higher than average. Here are some of the main areas within the sector:

Accountancy

Accountants keep track of companies and individuals’ finances so they can manage their money properly. Depending on their client’s needs, they might produce account reports, forecast future profits, calculate tax or audit accounts. All organisations – from football clubs to supermarkets – need accountants, so they can work in many different sectors. Entry-level role: accounts clerk, trainee accountant. Starting salary: £14,000 - £17,000.

Banking

The world would screech to a halt without banks. We need them to manage our money, give loans, exchange money and more. There are three types: retail banking (like your local HSBC or Lloyds), Corporate banking (banking services for businesses) and wholesale banking (large transactions for big clients like governments and other international banks). Entry-level role: customer service adviser, bank cashier. Starting salary: £10,500 - £16,000 a year.

Financial advice

It’s not just for the wealthy – everybody needs financial advice at some point. Financial advisers helps people make the most out of their money, whatever they have. A career in financial advice is about working with people to plan their financial goals, whether that’s choosing a mortgage, investing their savings or planning for their retirement. Entry-level role: insurance technician, customer service adviser in a bank or building society. Starting salary: around £17,000.

SOUTH EAST focus The finance and business sector is quite big in our region and is expected to grow in the future. More and more business and financial services are looking for office space in the South East, which will bring plenty of career opportunities for residents. Financial service companies provide nearly 5% of the employment for the region, around half of these work for banks or building societies.

You don’t have to go to university to train to be an accountant. Organisations like the ICAEW offer a training scheme for people who have completed their A-levels. Apprentice Jennie gets promotion in record time After working for several retailers, Jennie Wallace wanted something more from her career. Unsure of her next step, Jennie approached Farnborough College of Technology and took guidance from an adviser. After careful consideration she enrolled onto a Business Administration Apprenticeship, and was connected with Site-Equip, hirers of portable toilets and welfare units to the construction/event industries. Site-Equip were looking for a Business Administrator to join their busy Sales Team which gave Jennie the opportunity to begin her career in a completely new environment. She has learnt new office skills to complement the tutoring she received at college once a month. Some 15 months later, Jennie has successfully achieved her apprenticeship and gained a promotion. Jennie comments: “I really enjoy building working relationships with customers. It’s given me the chance to earn a regular wage, and I have managed to save enough money to buy a reliable car - plus I’m going on holiday. It’s great to be in a friendly office, and not having to work Saturdays is a bonus!” Developing new skills has improved Jennie’s self confidence, and she plans to start her Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Business Administration this year. SPORT & FITNESS You don’t have to be a world-class athlete for a career in sport. With the build-up to London 2012, now’s the perfect time to get involved in this booming sector… Many people think the only way you can get a career in sport is to become a professional athlete or a PE teacher – but this couldn’t be further from the truth. For example, behind every professional football player are the people running the club, maintaining the pitch, training the players, keeping the spectators safe and so on – and that’s just football. This sector is about more than just sport – it’s about promoting health and fitness, helping people enjoy the outdoors and public health. No matter what your interests or physical abilities are, there’s a rewarding career path for you. Here are some of the main areas within this thriving industry – you can take a vocational route into any of them.

Exercise and fitness

This is about helping people stay fit and healthy, and includes roles like personal trainer, fitness instructor, yoga instructor and swimming teacher. You could work for a gym or leisure centre, or be selfemployed and choose your own hours.

Coaching

Coaches are needed to teach skills and techniques at all levels, from beginner to professional. They help teams and individuals train to reach their full potential. Coaches need to get a special qualification recognised by their sport’s national governing body.

Playwork

Playworkers organise and lead play activities for children (aged between 4 and 15) in after-school clubs, play schemes and youth clubs.

Activity leadership

Outdoor activity instructors help people enjoy themselves in the great outdoors. They lead a wide range of expeditions and trips, such as walking, hiking, canoeing and rock climbing.

Spectator control

This latest success follows the win by the team when they won the final round of the British Schools Southern Region Championship at Highwoods Golf Club last November, making Sussex Downs College the overall champions for the region. The advanced apprenticeship in sporting excellence (AASE) is a unique sporting qualification for young people who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence in their sport. They answer the phone, input data, type up letters and anything else that needs to be done. Since administration and customer service are needed in most organisations, you could work across many different sectors.
