GENERAL INFORMATION Assessment

Computer requirements

All units are internally assessed and there are no examinations.

We recommend you have access to a computer and have word processing experience. If you study the National Diploma in Construction or National Diploma in Quantity Surveying you will also need a basic knowledge of spreadsheets.

There are two types of assessment – progress reviews and assessments. Most progress reviews need to be submitted to assist and support your learning process, provide feedback and help you prepare for assessments. Assessments must be submitted and will be marked by your tutor. Some assessments will need to be submitted online. If you do not pass your assessment, you will have one opportunity to re-do your assessment and resubmit it for marking.

Study time All units have a credit value. This helps you work out how much study time you will need. Allow about 10 hours of study per credit to successfully complete your study within the enrolment period.

Fees Admission requirements To be considered for enrolment in the construction qualifications you must have at least one of the following:

Fees are displayed on each course and qualification page on our website. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz and browse our subjects and courses to find the fee information you need.

· 35 or more credits towards NCEA Level 2 in four subjects including maths and English · NZQA unit standards equivalent to the above · New Zealand Sixth Form Certificate in at least 3 subjects preferably including maths and English · National Certificate in Carpentry · Qualifications equivalent to the above. If you do not have any of the above qualifications but have relevant skills and/or work experience you may still be able to apply to enrol in these qualifications. You need to provide other evidence such as a curriculum vitae (CV), and a letter explaining why you wish to study and what you aim to achieve to support your application. We will give you more information about what is required when you apply to enrol online. If you have not recently studied at tertiary level, you may benefit from our Certificate in Tertiary Study Skills.

SET TEXTS A list of set texts required is on our website at openpolytechnic.ac.nz/textbooks Texts can be bought online via a link on the qualification page on our website. Or you can go to vicbooks.co.nz and click the Open Polytechnic link.

STUDY MATERIALS For each course of study you will receive a study pack containing all your course material. This may include materials such as published bulletins, NZ Standards, videos and DVDs. The course material is interactive and allows you to work through the resources and do the exercises in your own time. You will need paper and drawing equipment for both manual drawing and computer-aided drawing (CAD) for all drawing units. Computer access is also required for commercial measurement units, and you may need a DVD player.

English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language.
