WELCOME TO OPEN POLYTECHNIC Whether you are looking to improve your career prospects, or learn something new, we can help you achieve your goal. We specialise in open learning – learning that gives you more freedom to decide what you study and where you study. Our courses are specifically designed for delivery by distance, which means you can fit your study around your life. And just because you are learning by distance, doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. You will have access to your tutors and lecturers by email or phone and to other students studying the same course through the Online Campus, the student support section of our website. It is our goal to make sure that you enjoy your study and that you succeed. So welcome to learning for today’s world, and congratulations on taking up the challenge of further education.

MAT302 MATHEMATICS FOR PROBLEM SOLVING This course will provide you with the techniques and strategies so that you can solve mathematical problems. It will also give you an understanding of the mathematical aspects of other subject areas. You will then gain the skills needed to move into higher level study in mathematics. After completing the course, you should be able to: · use geometric methods to solve problems relating to angles, lengths, volumes and surface area · rearrange and solve algebraic formulae containing algebraic fractions and powers · use quadratic equations to model situations and solve problems · define and interpret data sets using a variety of statistical methods · use trigonometry ratios and identities to solve problems related to triangles · use exponential and logarithmic functions to solve problems.

MAT401 ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS 1 This course will build on your existing mathematical skills and enable you to solve complex mathematical problems in the real world. You will also gain basic mathematical skills that are required in science and engineering contexts. After completing the course, you should be able to: · interpret and use relations and functions of various kinds · work with trigonometric functions, using degrees and radians · apply the geometry of a straight line, the circle and other curves · investigate rates of change using differential calculus · use integral calculus for areas under curves and other applications. 5
