NEW ZEALAND DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING (MECHANICAL) Qualification code: OP6520 Level: 6 Introduction Open Polytechnic offers the mechanical engineering strand of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE). This national and industry recognised qualification will give you the theoretical skills needed as an engineering technician. Graduates of this qualification who are working in the engineering industry can also continue with their studies (and transfer credit) to gain the Bachelor of Engineering Technology. A combination of this diploma and your work experience will give you applied skills for the engineering sector. Qualification When you have successfully completed 16 courses you can apply to be awarded the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical) Level 6. Graduate profile On achievement of this qualification, you will: · be competent in applying a technical and conceptual knowledge to practical situations · be a confident, critical thinker who has the ability to solve problems within a broad engineering setting · have developed capabilities as an effective communicator, with inquiring, flexible, creative and critical attitudes towards contemporary issues and underlying theoretical concepts · have an appreciation of management and information technology within the context of the qualification · have an awareness of social, ethical and environmental issues 2


· have developed the necessary skills and strategies to work safely and effectively on and off construction sites and engineering workplaces, with individuals, contractors, communities, clients and authorities · be self-reliant and motivated for continuous learning and professional development · function positively in bi-cultural and multicultural environments such as those which exist in New Zealand engineering · be work ready and able to be employed in a relevant engineering field so that you can work towards the achievement of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice (NZDEP). The NZDEP will enable you to meet the minimum standard of competence expected of a qualified engineering technician. Career opportunities Mechanical engineers design, manufacture and maintain the tools, engines, machines and systems that keep modern society operating. When you graduate you may find work in the following areas: · product design and development in areas such as roadways, machinery, bikes, appliances and equipment · testing tools such as engines, machines or other mechanical devices · planning and implementing routine maintenance on equipment and machinery.

Course availability Please visit the course page on our website to view course availability. Delivery Some learning materials are provided in paper format and some are provided online. Study time For each New Zealand Diploma in Engineering course you will need to complete 10–12 hours of study per week. Set texts You will need to buy textbooks for some courses. This is an additional cost that is not included in your course fees. Textbook information is shown on the relevant course pages and can be purchased online. General information Assessment We measure your progress and determine whether you have achieved the learning outcomes of your course through assessments such as essays, reports, projects and examinations. There are two types of assessment. 路 Formative assessment, which involves activities and feedback designed to improve your learning. This is not used to decide your final result. 路 Summative assessment, which counts towards your final result. Some courses also have a final examination. To be eligible to sit the final examination you must finish all the summative in-course assessments by their due date. To pass each course, you must: 路 achieve a minimum of 40% in both aggregated coursework marks and in any final examination 路 achieve a final mark of at least 50% of the total possible marks for the course. Assessment varies for each course. Full details will be in the course materials. Most assessments need to be submitted via Online Campus. Some assessments will need to be posted. When your enrolment is confirmed, please visit My Open Polytechnic to view your assessment due dates. Admission requirements This qualification is open to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents living in New Zealand. To gain admission you need to have one of the following: · A minimum total of 48 credits at Level 2 in four subjects including at least 12 credits in mathematics, 8 literacy credits at Level 1 or higher, including 4 credits in reading and 4 credits in writing. · A qualification that is equivalent to the above. · Equivalent credits from appropriate trades training and/or demonstrated skills and experience. If this will be your first enrolment at tertiary level, we strongly advise you to think about studying the Open Polytechnic Certificate in Tertiary Study Skills first. How to enrol There is an application process for the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical) which assesses your eligibility for admission into the qualification and formally determines the number of cross-credits you may claim. You must apply to enrol online and send us the following documentation: · A current CV which includes your work experience (this can be uploaded online) · A verified original copy of your academic transcript/s (sent through the post) · A verified true copy of all qualifications e.g. trade certificate, school qualifications (sent through the post). You may also be asked to send us the following, depending on your residency status and English language proficiency: · Verified evidence of your full legal name, age, citizenship or permanent residency details (sent through the post) · Verified evidence of English language proficiency if English is your second language (sent through the post).

We will then be in touch to discuss your application. Depending on your knowledge and experience you may need to do additional study or a pre-entry test before you can study this qualification. Your application cannot be assessed until we have received all the required documentation. English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. You will need to provide evidence that you have already met the learning outcomes of the course you want credit for. You can find the cross-credit and credit transfer form on our website. Examinations We have examination venues throughout New Zealand. You will be allocated a venue closest to your home address. Before you choose the courses that you want to enrol in, check that you can attend the examination, because examination dates and times cannot be changed. Annual administration fee You will need to pay a non-refundable annual administration fee with your first enrolment in each academic year. Loans, allowances and other funding Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least 4 weeks before the commencement of your study. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send you course materials until your fees have been paid. Financial assistance We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. This fund is available for course fees and/or set textbooks.
