Our courses are specifically designed for delivery by distance, which means you can fit your study around your life. And just because you are learning by distance, it doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. You will have access to your tutors and lecturers by email or phone and to other students studying the same course through the Online Campus, the student support section of our website. Open Polytechnic’s Certificate in Quality Assurance covers a full range of quality management principles at a practical level. It will equip you with the concepts, tools and techniques to manage and improve organisational processes, so you can deliver value to customers and maximise operational efficiency and effectiveness. Offered in conjunction with the New Zealand Organisation for Quality (NZOQ), this qualification meets the needs of a wide range of service and manufacturing industries. It also allows you to apply your experience within your workplace straightaway. The programme will expose you to applications and practices employed in different industries which will broaden your understanding of quality management in the workplace. SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN On completion of this qualification you will be able to: · explain how modern quality management concepts add value to an organisation · assist an organisation in developing good customer and supplier relationships · explain the importance of team work and staff training in establishing a quality improvement cycle · select and use a range of quality tools to create quality improvements and enhance performance · explain how the use of appropriate statistical information and the Six Sigma approach can enhance quality of products and/or services by reducing variation · introduce or enhance quality systems · apply appropriate tools to measure and enhance the quality of design · integrate environmental management and occupational health and safety into quality systems to create a total quality management approach 1


· establish and participate in monitoring, quality audit and evaluation processes · use effective measurement and calibration techniques · develop effective ways of obtaining good stakeholder feedback that can be used to improve a product or service. QUALIFICATION Once you have completed six courses, you can apply to receive the Certificate in Quality Assurance (Level 5). Upon completion of the qualification, you will have the necessary knowledge and skills to satisfy minimal educational requirements, which, combined with work experience in quality, can lead to professional recognition as an NZOQ Certified Quality Practitioner or Certified Quality Manager. You will also: · be well placed to progress to higher-level study in business and quality management, such as the Graduate Diploma in Quality Systems (Level 7) at Massey University. · have enhanced employment opportunities in specialist quality roles or more general supervisory or management positions · be able to pursue areas such as auditing, evaluation and implementation of organisational systems and quality improvement.

General information ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS This qualification is open to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents living in New Zealand or overseas, international students living in New Zealand and international students living overseas. To gain admission you need to meet one of the following conditions. · Be working in a service or manufacturing industry or voluntary organisation. · Have recent employment experience or knowledge of the employment environment. · Have a level of literacy that will allow you to submit structured assessments, with appropriate grammar and spelling, as expected in a professional quality assurance position. You must also have: · a minimum of 14 credits at NCEA Level 1 or higher in mathematics, or equivalent qualification · a minimum of 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English, or equivalent qualification. Applicants 20 years of age or over who have not achieved these academic requirements or the equivalent may be admitted if they are able to demonstrate that they have a reasonable likelihood of success. This may mean that the applicant will have to successfully complete another qualification or course before they can be admitted to study this qualification.

English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. For more information about English language requirements, please call freephone 0508 650 200 or visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/englishlanguage International students International students who are residing in New Zealand and studying part-time must have a verified work permit/visa. Please note the expiry date must be after the end date of your course. You will also need one of the following: · A Variation of Conditions allowing study at Open Polytechnic. · A letter of authorisation from your employer (on letterhead) confirming that you need to undertake this training as part of your job. International fees must be paid in full at the time of enrolment. DELIVERY All six courses are blended which means you will be sent printed material which is supported online through our Online Campus. Access to the internet is required for all courses in this qualification. Please contact us if your organisation has any specific needs or training requirements. See the last page of this brochure for contact details. ASSESSMENT All six courses are internally assessed. Course QM503 Variation includes a case study. Although the assessment relies on written tasks, the questions have a practical focus and demonstrate application of principles in the workplace.

Assessments need to be submitted online via Online Campus. When your enrolment is confirmed, please visit My Open Polytechnic to view your assessment due dates. To access My Open Polytechnic, visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz and click on the login button at the top right of the page. ENROLMENT This qualification is open for admission throughout the year and each course officially starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You need to enrol online from our website. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/howtoenrol for more information. You will be advised if additional information is needed to progress your application, and you can usually complete this online during the application process. When your enrolment is confirmed, we will send you a letter with your course start and end dates and where you can find assessment submission deadlines. COURSE MATERIALS You will need access to a statistical calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is recommended. SET TEXTS There are no set textbooks required for this qualification. STUDY TIME All courses have a credit value which helps you work out how much study time you will need. Allow about 10 hours of study per credit. Annual administration fee You will need to pay a non-refundable annual administration fee with your first enrolment in each academic year.

Loans, allowances and other funding Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least 4 weeks before the commencement of your study. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. Financial assistance We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. This fund is available for course fees and/or set textbooks. ONLINE CAMPUS Online Campus is the area of our website where you can: · access and submit assessments · link to web pages specific to your course, including frequently asked questions (FAQ), assessment hints, web resources, staff information and sometimes online quizzes and tutorials · communicate with other students in your course, and with your lecturer or tutor · access the library. LIBRARY We provide a library service for students. There is no additional fee for using it. The library service provides: · online resources · guides on how to search for information · a distance lending service with free and fast delivery · information about study techniques.
