Souad Massi

El-Mutakallimûn | Masters of the Word Raised in pre-civil war Algeria, playing guitar in jeans and trainers, Souad Massi was going to get noticed: firstly fronting a political rock band, then singing solo in Paris after fleeing death threats. Following a sold-out concert at the Barbican in 2015, Souad Massi comes north for a rare duo show. Exposing the lyricism and warmth of her extraordinary voice at close quarters, she performs the music of her album El-Mutakallimûn (Masters of the Word), mixing a millennium of Arabic poetry with musical influences including fado and African soul.

Film Installation

Tragedy

Thursday 15 September 4.30pm & 7.00pm Free, un-ticketed event. Drop in anytime. Running time 140 mins

Filmed during live performances of Opera North’s recent production of Verdi’s La traviata, Lynne Marsh’s film installation turns the camera’s gaze onto the theatre that exists around the stage itself. Guided by the music, the film keeps true to the ‘real-time’ of the opera, producing a new narrative composed of its backstage routines.

6

Tragedy observes stage managers, technicians, costume dressers, props personnel and performers; revealing the choreography of behind-the-scenes workings, the cultures of the workplace and the ‘grand narratives’ of the opera.

Nicholas Wolpe

A Better Life for All? Power, Politics and the Past in South Africa On 11 July 1963, police raided Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, South Africa and arrested the high command of the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. At the resulting Rivonia Trial, eight men, including Nelson Mandela, were sentenced to life in prison. Nicholas Wolpe is the founder of the Liliesleaf Trust and son of prominent anti-apartheid activist Harold Wolpe, who was arrested at Liliesleaf. He offers his powerful insight on both this decisive era for South Africa and the political crisis the country finds itself in today, more than 20 years after the first free elections.

In the first half of the concert, the ensemble presents Mary Casio, a new commission for brass band and ’70s analogue synthesisers by Hannah Peel, electronic composer, John Foxx collaborator and member of The Magnetic North, who grew up playing in colliery brass bands.

‘One of the most musically inspiring groups still left on the planet’ Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones

The Master Musicians of Jajouka Led by Bachir Attar

Hailing from the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, The Master Musicians of Jajouka perform the distinctive propulsive rhythms and trance-inducing melodies of Jbala Sufi music, one of the oldest known musical traditions on the planet. The group’s mind-expanding sound has been sought out by artists as diverse as the Rolling Stones and Ornette Coleman, and is described by film director Jim Jarmusch as ‘a living music... whenever I listen to its hallucinogenic properties, [I believe] that if the Master Musicians of Jajouka were to ever stop the flow of their magic the earth might well stop rotating on its axis.’

‘In the decades to come, we’ll surely talk of having seen this man in the way others talk of Miles Davis or Jimi Hendrix or John Coltrane’ The Irish Times on Martin Hayes

Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill Founder of Irish super-group The Gloaming, Martin Hayes’ nuanced and profound approach to the Irish fiddle draws inspiration from many genres, but remains grounded in the music he grew up with in East County Clare. He plays with long term collaborator and fellow member of The Gloaming, virtuoso guitarist Dennis Cahill. Together, their music represents the vitally beautiful traditional element of The Gloaming’s sound, found in haunting melodies and rousing medleys, whilst creating an alchemy all their own.

On the Waterfront

Friday 30 September 7.30pm £4.50

In the electrifying performance that would define his career, Marlon Brando plays Terry Malloy, a one time prize-fighter resigned to backbreaking work as a longshoreman on docks ruled by a ruthless union boss. Nominated for twelve Oscars and winning eight, including Best Actor for Brando and Best Director for Kazan, On the Waterfront remains a haunting portrait of life on the margins.

Dir. Elia Kazan, USA 1954, 103 mins. Cert PG. DARE International Film Series in association with the University of Leeds

This thought-provoking, expertly constructed melodrama is illuminated by Brando’s central performance, which redefined the possibilities of acting for film and helped permanently alter the cinematic landscape. Shown to accompany Puccini’s Il tabarro on Opera North’s main stage, with an introduction before the film by Professor Paul Cooke, Centenary Chair in World Cinemas from the University of Leeds.

Steven Osborne

Thursday 13 October 7.30pm £17.50

Scottish pianist Steven Osborne makes his long- awaited debut at the Howard Assembly Room with a glorious Late Romantic programme that includes Ravel’s Menuet Antique, Debussy’s Children’s Corner and pieces by Poulenc.

Save 20% ‘Osborne's attack is ferocious and fearless, his tenderness beyond words. His self appears subsumed in service to the composer. This is the best it gets’ The Observer

Having recorded Debussy’s Préludes and the complete solo piano works of Ravel, he deeply understands the music’s formal complexities, and its emotional depths of clarity, colour, and feeling. The result is an interpretive approach that is both technically brilliant and deeply affecting.

Claudia Aurora Mulher do Norte

Porto-born fadista Claudia Aurora’s second album, Mulher Do Norte, translates from Portuguese as ‘Woman of the North’. Written with the clarity of distance, it is a homage to the city, the way of living, that make her the woman she is.

‘Haunting Portuguese fado... heartbreakingly poignant‘ Time Out

Infused with the tingling beauty so peculiar to fado, her performance of classics and original songs (written with Portuguese guitarist Bernardo Couto) are by turns nimbly lyrical and gorgeously melancholic. Guitar, strings, bouzouki, accordion, and above all Claudia’s voice, combine to create fado with arms open wide to embrace nuances of the other grand traditions of the Iberian Peninsula: flamenco, tango and chanson.

Lynched (named after the founder-members, brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch), is a four-piece punk-folk group from Dublin who mix street-songs and classic ballads in the traveller tradition with wild dance music and nods to psychedelia and rock ’n’ roll. With an instrumental line-up featuring uilleann pipes, fiddle and bayan (a Russian accordion), the group are famed for their four-part harmony vocals. Their debut album, Cold Old Fire, drew comparisons to Planxty and The Dubliners while Mark Radcliffe says that ‘They mark a turning point in folk... that authentic voice of the streets is back in a big way.’

Flit

In 2015 the legendary South African female vocal ensemble celebrated fifty years of performance, but they show no signs of slowing down. The Queens bring their stirring, rolling Mbaqanga blend of R&B, gospel and traditional styles to Leeds, which for many years dominated the South African townships. Their distinctive multi-part vocal harmonies combine with guitar-led riffs, searing a capella moments and fast-paced dancing.

Dir. Nicolas Roeg, UK / Italy 1973, 110 mins. Cert 15. ‘One of the definitive mystery chillers of all time...’ Empire Magazine

Don’t Look Now For Halloween, ‘A superbly chilling essay in the supernatural’ (Time Out). Nicolas Roeg’s 1973 film is one of the great horror masterpieces, whose creeping fingers of dread, apprehension and psychological trauma create an effect more powerful than straightforward fear. A married couple (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) are in Venice grieving the recent death of their young daughter when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond. Roeg maps Sutherland’s disintegrating psyche onto the labyrinthine alleys and murky canals of Baroque Venice to poignant and devastating effect.

Cat’s Eyes With support

Cat’s Eyes is a duo formed by Faris Badwan, singer from British psychedelic-rockers The Horrors and Rachel Zeffira, an Italian-Canadian operatic soprano and multi-instrumentalist. While their self-titled debut seemed grown in the dark, the duo’s latest album Treasure House is flooded with light, featuring lush, expansive arrangements and pure voiced vocals with a sinister edge. This is music made in Technicolor on a wide silver screen, by the band whose glorious concoction of Morricone, Nino Rota, and Broadcast’s harpsichord-laden reverie was the soundtrack for Peter Strickland’s The Duke of Burgundy. Everything about their music feels cinematic.

Two of the UK’s foremost contemporary music ensembles join forces for this unique collaborative programme celebrating their joint 25th birthdays. At its heart is Schoenberg’s bewitchingly intense piece for string sextet, Transfigured Night. The programme also bids farewell to the late, great British composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. With the powerful expressivity of Farewell to Stromness and the kaleidoscopic colours of The Last Island (accompanied here by a new film), they pay tribute to a man whose music has shaped their programming over the last quarter of a century.

The Bad Plus

Support: Binker and Moses Iconoclastic jazz trio The Bad Plus came together at the end of the 20th century and have consistently avoided easy categorisation with their creativity, unique sound and gift for joyful live performance. Based in New York City, they have constantly searched for rules to break, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect synchronicity. The trio play from their new album (released August 2016), weaving ingenious covers into their own uncompromising originals. They continue to redefine what a jazz piano trio can be. Early booking highly recommended.

The Tallis Scholars A Renaissance Christmas

In the darkest month of the year, the Tallis Scholars light up the festive season with classic texts associated with Christmas from some of the lesser known master composers of the Renaissance. The first half pairs one of the most influential motets of its time: Josquin's Praeter rerum seriem, with de Rore’s elaborate mass on the birth of Christ Missa Praeter rerum seriem. The second half continues the Christmas theme, proceeding through remarkable pieces by Victoria, de Sermisy (a Franco-Flemish composer in the generation after Josquin) and Mexican composer Hernando Franco. The evening culminates with John Taverner's most intricate and splendid antiphon in praise of the Virgin, O splendor gloriae.
