Dir. Max Ophüls, 1948, USA, 86 mins. Cert U. ‘A weepie like they don’t make them like anymore’ The Independent

Letter from an Unknown Woman ‘By the time you read this letter, I may be dead.’ Set in Vienna at the turn of the 20th century, a former concert pianist receives a letter from a woman (Joan Fontaine) which reveals her lifelong love for him, and the devastation that their encounters have caused her. Letter from an Unknown Woman portrays Ophüls’ favourite theme of women ill-met in love with a mix of European style, Hollywood muscularity and lyrical camera work. This showing accompanies Opera North’s new production of La traviata. Introduced by Dr Claudia Sternberg, Senior Lecturer in History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds.

Teho Teardo & Blixa Bargeld Still Smiling

A special UK performance brings an alliance of the highest order to the Howard Assembly Room. Still Smiling sees German-born Blixa Bargeld (former Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds member and Einstürzende Neubauten founder) join forces with Italian electronic composer Teho Teardo. Theirs is a dark and sumptuous collaboration, in which Bargeld’s sardonic, poetic lyrics and unmistakable voice combine with a palette of strings, experimentation and a dose of theatrical flair. The result is a multi-lingual masterpiece of intimacy and controlled grandeur.

Light Night

I am yours, yours am I Something strange has happened in the Howard Assembly Room. Trees have taken root in the floor and birds are singing from the treetops, indoors, on a cold, dark October night... Experience opera as never before, for as the clock strikes, singers and musicians appear around you, bringing to life one of the most achingly beautiful love songs ever written. From the final moments of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea, this is a moment of magic where all is not as it seems... Sit where you like, stay as long as you want, this is opera for everyone, in 3D and surround sound. The Coronation of Poppea is at Leeds Grand Theatre in October. A performance will begin approximately every 10 minutes. lightnightleeds.co.uk

King Creosote

From Scotland With Love King Creosote is the stage name of Scottish folk singer and songwriter Kenny Anderson. His powerful and cinematic new album From Scotland With Love, released to coincide with Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games, has received universal critical acclaim. His first since his Mercury-nominated collaborative record with Jon Hopkins, Diamond Mine, From Scotland With Love was originally composed to accompany a documentary film, so for the first time King Creosote found himself writing the stories and perspectives of other people. The result is a sweepingly charismatic set of songs with themes of love and loss, war and resistance.

Brodsky Quartet Angels and Maidens

The Brodsky Quartet bring their fine blend of musical curiosity and impeccable mastery to a programme centred on one of the pinnacles of the Classical period: Schubert’s Death and the Maiden. Alongside it sits George Crumb’s masterpiece of the avant-garde: Black Angels. Composed for amplified string quartet, using a refrain from Death and the Maiden as its theme, this piece uses shouting, chanting, whistling, whispering, gongs, maracas, and crystal glasses to evoke the mangrove swamps of Vietnam which inspired it.

Mônica Vasconcelos Brazilian Freedom Songs

50 years ago, a military coup in Brazil marked the beginning of a long, repressive dictatorship. The crisis heralded one of the most creative periods in Brazilian popular music. Under heavy censorship, and with no political rights, composers and lyricists voiced their opposition in songs: songs with coded messages, songs of resistance, and live affirming hymns that today stand as masterpieces. Mônica Vasconcelos has been searching for the stories behind these songs and plays them with a team of leading musicians from Brazil and Britain including the Brazilian singer and guitarist Ife Tolentino.

Dir. EJ-Yong, Korea, 2003, 124 mins, with English subtitles. Cert 18. ‘...a viciously purring Korean comedy of sexual conquest’ New York Times

Untold Scandal Writer/Director EJ-Yong relocates the action of De Laclos’ classic French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, to 18th century Korea. A beautiful noblewoman bets her womanising cousin that he can’t seduce a virtuous young woman. This drama of immorality, eroticism and betrayal unfolds against delicate landscapes. Revealing the moral hypocrisy behind the exquisitely observed etiquette of courtly society, Untold Scandal finds the essence of the original story in a rendition that combines sly wit and understated intensity. This film accompanies Opera North’s new production of The Coronation of Poppea. Introduced by Paul Cooke, Centenary Chair in World Cinemas at the University of Leeds.

Strauss: Enoch Arden Op. 38 a melodrama (1897)

Music by Richard Strauss Words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson Enoch Arden tells the heart-wrenching story of a shipwrecked sailor who returns home after many years to find that the world, and his loved ones, have long given him up for dead. A true melodrama, Strauss’ music digs deep into the psychological turmoil of Enoch, his wife Annie, and Philip, their shared childhood friend. Famously recorded by Claude Rains and Glenn Gould, here the piece’s wonderfully dynamic relationship between spoken voice and piano is brought to life by music theatre actor, Dale Rapley, and Opera North’s Head of Music, Martin Pickard, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Strauss’ birth.

Night of the Hunter Halloween at Opera North

Inspired by German Expressionist films of the 1920s, Night of the Hunter is shot in black and white, with striking shadows and distorted perspectives. Walter Schumann’s soundtrack is an integral part of the film’s eerie atmosphere. The chilling story follows Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), a serial-killer who styles himself as a preacher-man to gain the trust of a family on the Ohio River. The children escape by boat, but Powell hunts them relentlessly, believing they know the location of a robbery haul. A classic tale of innocence versus evil, Night of the Hunter is perfect viewing for Halloween. Introduced by Bridget Bennett, Professor in American Literature & Culture at the University of Leeds.

Zakir Hussain A rare UK show from tabla master Zakir Hussain. A classical repertoire of ragas and talas is at the heart of music exploring the frontier between the traditional and contemporary. Hussain’s spectacular tabla solos are one of the great sights and sounds in music today – a virtuoso at the very height of his creative powers. Here, Hussain is accompanied by a hand-picked group of India’s finest musicians: Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri), Ganesh Rajagopalan (violin), Sridhar Parthasarathy (mridangam & kanjira), Navin Sharma (dholak) and T.H.V. Umashankar (ghatam).

‘Zakir Hussain, the peerless North Indian tabla player, favors an impish strain of virtuosity. He’s a fearsome technician but also a whimsical inventor, devoted to exuberant play’ New York Times

A true inspiration to behold, this award-winning performer has not only gained national treasure status in his homeland, but also a legendary reputation abroad.

‘Legends drum among us... Zakir Hussain has accomplished more with his hands and heart than most other artists in the world, let alone percussionists.’ DRUM! Magazine

Tord Gustavsen Ensemble Extended Circle

The slowly turning, luminous music of Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen has, without fanfare, developed a staggering depth of meaning and confidence. His quartet with Tore Brunborg, Mats Eilertsen and long-term associate Jarle Vespestad, has matured into a group whose interactions draw their strength from restraint. The material for this one-off UK date ranges from gospel-influenced pieces and glowing group improvisation, to the Norwegian traditional I Know A Castle In Heaven. Drawn mainly from his latest album, its striking ‘Nordic-Caribbean-GospelImpressionist-Bluesy touch’ is reminiscent of his much-lauded debut album.

Casting an atmospheric spell with heart-stopping melodies and delicately propulsive grooves, Ibrahim plays music from across his vast musical landscape of knowledge and technique. ‘Frazey Ford’s warm voice is instantly recognizable to any fan of her former group, the Be Good Tanyas. But unlike that trio and its folksy air, Ford’s solo work has more of a smoky, soulful mood’ Washington post

Frazey Ford With support One of the defining features of The Be Good Tanyas is the distinctive vocal style of Frazey Ford. David Honigmann said in the Financial Times ‘as a lead singer, Frazey is poised halfway between folk and soul, paying simultaneous obeisance to Bob Dylan and Otis Redding’. Her influences run near the surface – you can hear in her songs the combination of soul and folk that fuelled artists like Donny Hathaway and Joni Mitchell – but the stories of her new album Indian Ocean are all her own.

That Night Follows Day is a comical and poignant text by Tim Etchells, the Artistic Director of internationally renowned theatre company Forced Entertainment. Written for an adult audience with performers aged 8 to 14, the work explores the ways in which adults’ words and actions shape and influence young people’s experience. Addressing the audience directly, a chorus of children explores and interrogates the range of advice, facts, truisms, white lies and excuses they hear from their elders.
