Living Tradition There is an extraordinarily rich tradition of music-making in Kirklees in which we at Opera North and Kirklees Council are enormously proud to play a part. What’s more, it’s very much a living tradition, in a perpetual process of change and renewal. This is true of the Kirklees Concert Season, which has continually evolved since Opera North’s groundbreaking partnership with Kirklees Council began back in 2003. We’ve made great efforts to broaden the reach of the Season with a particular focus on appealing to younger people through initiatives such as our Classic FM concerts, afternoon family concerts, education projects and our 13 or under scheme. And the Season extends well beyond the orchestral repertoire to encompass Gordon Stewart’s ever-popular Organ Series and the Dewsbury Lunchtime concerts, which play such a special and important part in the lives of their audiences. What is unchanging is our total commitment to bringing audiences at Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls inspirational, world-class musicianship with some of the greatest music ever composed.

This season, we welcome internationallyrenowned conductors and soloists, including some of the most exciting younger talents on the classical scene, who will appear with our resident ensemble, the Orchestra of Opera North, and our regular guest orchestras, the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the BBC Philharmonic.

Nevertheless, with ten concerts in the orchestral season and a fine and varied array of music in the Organ and Chamber series, there is a wealth of great performances to look forward to in the season. We hope you’ll join us as often as you possibly can in the year ahead because it is only with the support and commitment of our audiences that we can strive to continue the rich tradition of musicmaking in Kirklees for future generations.

The 2015/16 season is Richard Farnes’ last as Opera North’s Music Director after 12 exceptional years at the helm. In December he conducts the Orchestra in a programme of Lutosławski and Mahler in Huddersfield that will provide the perfect showcase for their extraordinary partnership. You may notice that the Kirklees Season finishes a little earlier than usual this year. This is partly because in the Phil Boughton Spring of 2016 Richard conducts six complete Orchestra Director, Opera North cycles of Wagner’s monumental Ring with Opera North, for which rehearsals begin in March.

Orchestra of Opera North Wagner, Strauss The Kirklees Concert Season is launched in high heroic style with Richard Strauss’ tone poem Ein Heldenleben, which charts the progress of a hero’s life in thrilling fashion. It’s an exhilarating showcase for the orchestra, encompassing the clamorous excitement of the battlefield and the passionate lyricism of a portrait of the composer’s wife Pauline in the guise of the ‘hero’s companion’. Opening proceedings are two works by Wagner. Rienzi was the composer’s third opera and his first big success. It is Grand Opera at its grandest, and the extravagant overture, which culminates in a jaunty military march, also includes one of Wagner’s noblest melodies, Rienzi’s Prayer. The Wesendonck Lieder were composed at the time Wagner was working on Tristan und Isolde, his great hymn to erotic love, and both opera and song cycle share an overpowering intensity of expression.

Wagner Rienzi Overture Wagner Wesendonck Lieder Richard Strauss Ein Heldenleben Aleksandar Markovi´ c Conductor Emma Bell Soprano Talking Music starts at 6.40pm

Orchestra of Opera North Beethoven, Tchaikovsky To open the season in Dewsbury we are delighted to welcome one of the world’s leading pianists/conductors, Howard Shelley. This peerless musician has recorded all of Beethoven’s works for piano and orchestra with the Orchestra of Opera North to international critical acclaim. In this concert he plays and conducts from the keyboard the last and most impressive of Beethoven’s piano concertos, the ‘Emperor’. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is one of the pinnacles of Russian orchestral music. The recurrence of the fateful opening motif suggests an autobiographical aspect to the work, but this shouldn’t obscure Tchaikovsky’s mastery of symphonic form, especially in the 20-minute long opening movement. The Fourth is a symphony supercharged with emotion, and in the intimate setting of Dewsbury Town Hall it promises to be a shattering experience.

Orchestra of Opera North Sibelius, Dvoˇrák Both Sibelius and Dvoˇ rák were deeply attuned to the folk culture of their native lands, Finland and Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) respectively. Dvoˇ rák wrote that ‘Love, God, Country’ were in his mind as he worked on his Seventh Symphony, yet there was something more personal too: the recent deaths of his mother and eldest child cast a shadow over the work. Yet tragedy is counterpointed by lyrical warmth and a determined sense that life’s adversities may be overcome. The stirring opening of Sibelius’ Karelia Suite is one of the most instantly recognisable passages in all classical music and is matched by the wonderfully uplifting march with which the work concludes. Figures from Finnish legend take centre stage in two further works: the impetuous youth Lemminkäinen and Luonnotar, the Spirit of Nature and Mother of the Seas. The Orchestra is joined by soprano Lee Bisset in Autumn Evening and in Luonnotar, a work that has the other-worldly quality of ancient incantation.

Orchestra of Opera North Lutosławski, Mahler

Orchestra of Opera North A Joyous Christmas

Richard Farnes’ illustrious 12-year term as Music Director of Opera North concludes in the summer of 2016 with complete cycles of Wagner’s Ring up and down the country. Richard has conducted the Orchestra in several memorable concerts in the Kirklees Season over the years, and this evening promises to be an extra-special occasion. The Concerto for Orchestra by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski was premièred in 1954 and, like Bartók’s earlier work of the same title, is a remarkable demonstration of the virtuosity of the modern symphony orchestra. It’s a perfect piece with which to celebrate the creative partnership of Farnes and the Orchestra of Opera North. Mahler’s First Symphony is full of vivid orchestral scene-painting, from the glorious opening sunrise from which the work derives its nickname, ‘Titan’, to a fittingly triumphant conclusion.

Lutosławski Concerto for Orchestra Mahler Symphony No.1 ‘Titan’ Richard Farnes Conductor Talking Music starts at 6.40pm

The Orchestra of Opera North is joined by the combined voices of the Chorus of Opera North, Opera North Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorus in a joyous concert that will fill you with festive cheer! The annual Dewsbury Christmas concert has become a popular fixture in the calendar in recent years, and with good reason: the most wonderful time of the year has inspired many of the greatest composers to write some of their finest music. Take a feast of seasonal favourites, add a dash of traditional carols, and you have the perfect prelude to the Christmas holiday season.

Royal Northern Sinfonia Haydn, Mozart, Stravinsky One of the delights of a performance by the Royal Northern Sinfonia is the palpable joy in their music-making. Stravinsky’s neoclassical Concerto in D was composed in Hollywood in 1946, and its exciting rhythmic character later inspired Jerome Robbins to choreograph it in his ballet The Cage. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante is a distillation of his genius: from the grace and poise of the opening movement, to the deep sadness of the central andante, to the high-spirited fun of the finale. Haydn’s ‘Farewell’ Symphony is so called because in the last movement the musicians leave the stage by turns, leaving just two violins to finish the work. This was perhaps a not so subtle hint to Haydn’s patron Prince Esterházy that it was time to pack up his summer residence and head home so that his musicians could be reunited with their families.

Orchestra of Opera North Classic FM - Classic Romance There has been no greater source of inspiration for composers throughout the ages than the joys and sorrows of romantic love. In this very special Valentine’s Day concert we celebrate love in all its aspects – from the thrill of falling into it to the heartbreak of losing it. And there is surely nothing more romantic than serenading the object of your heart’s desire with a full-size symphony orchestra live in the room, playing some of the most beautiful and passionate music ever written!

BBC Philharmonic Schubert, Strauss, Brahms We are delighted to welcome the BBC Philharmonic to the Kirklees Season under its Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena in a programme of works by three generations of Austro-German masters. Franz Strauss was renowned as a virtuoso horn player, and his son Richard composed his First Horn Concerto with the hope that his father would give the premi ere. In the event, the technical demands of this wonderfully fresh work, rich in melody, were deemed too risky by Strauss senior, who was by then in his sixties. Schubert’s genial Sixth Symphony owes much to the example of Haydn, while Brahms’ Third Symphony is a work of striking contrasts. The allegretto third movement, laced with melancholy, is a favourite for many, and it is followed by a tautly dramatic finale which eventually relaxes into a quiet ending that glows like sunshine through Autumn haze.

11 November The Queen’s Six

Dewsbury favourites, violinist David Greed and Ian Buckle, open the series with a programme including Beethoven’s glorious Sonata in D, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Elgar’s Salut d’Amour. A perfect concert to open a concert series.

This is a real coup for Dewsbury! The Queen’s Six have been performing all over Europe and getting rave reviews wherever they have appeared. Their programme for Dewsbury ranges from the 16th Century masterpieces to brilliant new jazz arrangements. Definitely a concert not to be missed.

21 October George King (Piano) George King is unique amongst British pianists in that he is recognised as a classical concert pianist but is also an internationally admired jazz pianist. This will be his fifth appearance in the series and he really is back by public demand. There will certainly be fireworks in Chopin and Liszt and the usual King invention in an improvisation on a popular melody.

9 December University of Huddersfield Brass Band For many of the Dewsbury audience Christmas starts when they come to hear the wonderful University of Huddersfield Brass Band. Here they are again in concert, directed by the charismatic Phillip McCann, with lots of new pieces to welcome in the Festive Season, and carols for all to sing.

20 January The Chagall Piano Trio

10 February Paul Chamberlain (Accordion)

Although Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular of all composers, famous for his ballets, overtures and symphonies, his chamber works are less regularly heard. In this concert his magnificent Piano Trio in A Minor will be the main work – a rare opportunity to hear one of the real masterpieces of the repertoire.

Paul Chamberlain’s last appearance in Dewsbury was one of the highlights of the season. Many audience members asked if we could have him back, so here he is in a programme including virtuoso music from Russia, Argentina and France. Paul is recognised as one of the finest players in this country and his concerts have taken him to Russia, Finland and the USA.

9 March Ross McInroy (Bass) with Geoffrey Tanti (Piano) Ross McInroy is one of the rising stars in the world of opera. A prize-winning student in Glasgow and London, he has appeared in operas ranging from Mozart to Britten. In his programme for Dewsbury, he has chosen as wide a range of music as possible – “Something for all tastes”, he says, “from oratorio to opera and then to Broadway!” He is accompanied by Glasgow-based pianist Geoffrey Tanti and both are making their first appearances in the Dewsbury season. Ross appears by permission of Opera North.
