CELLAR OFFERING 188 Bordeaux – A Wine lover’s paradise The year passes, the grape pickers arrive and a new vintage is born. Once again the eyes of the world’s wine enthusiasts turn towards Bordeaux with hopes that a great year will be announced. Why Bordeaux? Simply, because nowhere else captures such fervent media and press interest as the vineyards of this cherished region. For close to two centuries, Bordeaux has prospered and, as capital has continuously flowed into the region, many properties used the funds wisely to purchase the services of the best winemakers, to replant old vineyards with vine stock of higher quality and to re-equip the wineries.

Today, Bordeaux is producing finer wines of more uniformly high quality than at any time in its history, raising the bar and increasing competition, this at a time when only the best producers can hope to survive.

He built a superb state of the art winery on a hill overlooking the lake, in the bowl-shaped valley of vines at the eastern end of the SaintÉmilion escarpment. Marianne and Philip’s growing tally of medals proves the quality of the wines which continue to sweep away the competition.

Neither Marianne nor Ken Christie have forgotten the occasion when Ken turned up carrying samples of Rosé and proceeded to challenge Marianne to try to match the quality of the best he had presented. Marianne’s short reply, “OK, we’ll have a blind tasting”. She won, hands down! This is exactly what Rosé ought to be, vigorous, clean fruit notes set in a framework of fine, deftly managed, mineral fresh acidity. When Bergerac broke away from the Bordeaux regional appellation, it set up a mix and match of many interwoven appellations; but, the base wine is and should be simple Bergerac because that is the heart of the wine of the region. The grapes were grown around the lake dug out by Philip to provide water for the lush grass where he breeds his world class Limousin cattle. The water provides a perfect micro-climate for Merlot which develops a slightly herbaceous mélange of aromas with a rather chunky, sweet-tasting, refreshing palate, all very simple and full of life, zip and a pleasing, dry finish. Perhaps this is not too difficult for a grower whose wines are so richly recognized with Gold and Silver. These three vintages were all successful. If the quality of 1998 has become a fond memory, we remember with delight the elegance of the 2001 vintage, a wine made from fruit carried on fruiting canes, ripened during the Millennium year. 2002 was a great year in its own right, especially on the right bank where the Merlot was particularly successful.

As the rain fell and the weather turned cold no one could have imagined that Bordeaux 2008 could be a very good vintage. But, miracles happen and with the help of Indian summer the wines are truly fine. Cold, wet weather in May produced a small crop-set which helped protect the grape bunches and allowed for finely ripened fruit to be picked.

The result is a wine with a clear, lemon colour, a stylish lift of grapefruit and tantalizing aromas of honeysuckle against crisp mineral notes and a hint of vanilla. This attractive, dry white shows fine fruit and a long finish. [00] M6 D7

Having retired from life in the City of London, Martin Krajewski likes nothing more than to stroll through the vineyards. Here he is checking the progress of “la sortie”, the vital period when the new shoots produce buds for the next vintage. The 2007 is 100% Merlot from old vines on a five hectare site on the Ballyeran plateau, east of the Château.

Picked by hand in the last week of September, the intensity and richness of the colour improved during 15 months in new oak. The results speak for themselves. Fruit melds with fully ripe tannins to give succulent flavours which finish with concentrated blackberry and plums. M5 D6

As Kenneth Christie, Opimian Wine Consultant explained, “A benefit of having a close personal friendship is that you are let loose in the cellar with a glass”. On a recent visit to the Château, Ken spied five barrels, sufficient to produce 1500 bottles, in a corner of the “chais”. They were Sébastien Lamothe’s private reserve which he has released for Opimian.

Made exclusively from old vines Merlot grown on the limestone plateau, it shows a deep, bright velvet colour with great richness. The perfumes of tar, creosote and liquorice are followed by lush fruit and perfect harmony. Succulent, it will improve with greater bottle ageing. M4 D6

CLOS CANTENAC Saint-Émilion In early 2007, an opportunity arose to buy a bijou estate in SaintÉmilion. It took Martin and Sébastien little time to seal a deal to buy. Sébastien is one of Bordeaux's new wave winemakers.

At 31 years old, he spent several years in South Africa and Morocco and is already experienced in the latest techniques and styles of wine production. Having been raised in the old town of SaintÉmilion, this purchase celebrates his return home. Opimian is the first customer for the new Clos Cantenac partnership.

This wine is the harmonious orchestration of three varieties combining the best assets of each. With a youthful, full, red colour, it is made in a modern, fruit-driven style; it is fresh, well-formed, poised and rich. The bouquet is brimming with blackcurrants, cedar, spice box and liquorice. In the glass, grainy tannins carry notes of fallen leaves and truffles which add interest to the structure. Spare no effort, turn every stone, do everything possible to make Martin and Sébastien’s first vintage memorable. The Merlot quality, from old vines planted on the sloping, deep gravel and clay soil close to the winery, is outstanding. The entire vineyard of only 1,7 hectares was gathered by hand in one glorious day at the end of September. In the winery, the free-run juice was omitted to increase the depth of colour. The fruit is enormous, intense and opulent, filled with ripe figs, plums, chocolate and coffee. Fine conditions pre-harvesting produced well-balanced acidity and aromatic persistence underlined by ripe berries, leather and smoke.

The Lamothe family has made wine here for five generations, taking advantage of each sale of adjoining property to increase their vineyard acreage. The grapes were harvested by hand to allow for the selection of each individual berry, with only those infected with “noble rot” (botrytis cinerea) being chosen. Back at the cellar, the grapes were pressed and the must, very rich in sugar, was fermented slowly in tanks with a percentage fermented in oak barrels. The result is an enticing complexity of lime, acacia, apricots and grilled almonds and honeyed aromas. Luscious and generous, the sweet apricot, honey, roasted nuts and marmalade flavours are harmonized by zesty acidity. [07] M5 D7

The grapes for this traditional, semi-sweet wine hung on the vines while Michel dealt with the vintage at his other properties. The best bunches partially dried on the vine (passerillé), raising sugar levels. The crushing was followed by a short period of skin contact to heighten aroma and flavour development before the fermentation left a modest level of residual grape sugar giving it a luscious, but not overly rich, palate.

Light golden in colour, the perfumes of kiwi and white currant fruit lead to the palate packed with flavours of honeysuckle, marmalade and sweet figs. [02] M7 D7

Organic production! The property sits at the summit of a steep hill rising up from the Dordogne where the vines catch the worst of the winter weather, but where in springtime the southerly aspect gives excellent solar exposure. These features result in a modest yield of water-stressed, concentrated fruit that reaches perfect ripeness year after year. The 2008 vintage, which was the second of the “La Niña” years and the second year of 13 moon cycles, has surprised everyone. Light in colour, green-tinged and touched with silver, the mineral-edged fruit bouquet is followed by light elderberry and cut grass flavours.

Its fresh fruit sweetness is well-balanced by pleasant, astringent acidity and some austerity. [00] M7 D8

Michel, a very talented winemaker, never stops working for a moment, so it is fortunate that his vineyards are right outside his back door. His recent adoption of organic principles for part of his production indicates a dedication to follow green credentials which lead to the production of wines with accented fruit and aroma. This has an intense and rich colour with aromas of plum jam and black cherries and excellent balance with a sturdy, tannic structure. With such limited production, Michel handcrafts every part of the winemaking, lavishing care and attention right up to bottling. M7 D8

LA RENARDIÈRE This fragrant charmer comes from a property close to that of Stéphane Defraine’s Château de Fontenille, but has a higher Sauvignon Blanc component. Look for the beautiful bouquet of aromatic summer berries, cut grass, beeswax and fruits that gently rush up your nostrils. There are earthy patches too, warm to the palate and bouquet. The ripe fruit is delicate and sweet, making this an easy wine to enjoy as it swirls round the palate suggesting grace and vigour with a charming light touch. [00] M8 D9

Michel obtains great colour from the fruit in this vineyard which lies close to the Saint-Émilion escarpment. Although aged for over a year in oak, the effect of the ageing is not an increase in tannins, but enhancement of vanilla and sweet spice aromas and the polishing of the colour. Now a hearty red, it is soft, light and mellow in the mouth with a fresh edge of black fruit that complements the tidy oak.

Soft and pleasant, the mouth-feel is heightened by a persistent line of grainy tannins that lengthens the flavours, leaving the palate clean. M6 D7

When Michel produced a number of casks that stood out above the others, he decided to name the special cuvée after his wife, Angelita. Their romance is a story apart, but knowing the family we are pleased to share this tribute wine with them. Glossy-coloured, a peppery, oak-impregnated nose is filled with floral, aromatic fragrances. It is still taut and lively in the mouth with an edge of blackcurrant mixed with lashings of convivial tannin towards the finish.

This clever use of tannin gives a multi-dimensional palate suggesting that, once the angular tannins are tamed, it will be graceful, rich and elegant. M6 D6

In the vineyard the winemaker, Laurent Doyen, follows a “phytosanitaire” routine which avoids the use of any chemical intervention whenever possible, in order to work steadily towards organic production. The wine has a deep, red colour with lovely fruit fragrances matched with sweet oak and trimmed with mineral edges. In the mouth, the blackberry notes and a touch of yeast balance a fine tannic backbone through to the finish. There is sufficient fruit to give such fierce intensity that the tannins are almost forgotten, but they are there and play a part in the structure. M6 D7

We offered this wine from the 2003 vintage when it was a runaway of quality and style. This, from the even better 2005 vintage, is rich, filled with concentration and complexity and oozing with small berries and ripe cherries. Sauternes is a question of “hit or miss”. Will the “botrytis” develop on the skins allowing the grapes to dehydrate? Will late season rain ruin the harvest or will blackbirds leave any grapes to be picked? Even when all goes well, it is sensible to wonder if the risks balance the rewards. For many dedicated to this most glorious of sweet wines, the answer is foretold.

Daniel and Valérie Alibrand gave up their life in Cognac to return to the small family estate in Fargues, almost next door to Château d’Yquem. A wonderful wine but one wonders how much longer can the production of such wines remain viable.

Frédéric, who tired of working in the family vineyard in the Médoc, moved to the rolling hills of the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. Being over 25 years old, the white vines give a low yield, a fact verified by the intensity of the nose and palate. Many growers now follow the “saigné” method to concentrate the juice from crushed red grapes by allowing the pink free-run liquid to be siphoned off to be made into rosé. This makes for stronger reds while at the same time utterly transforming the appeal of rosé. Claret, the original name for red Bordeaux, gained its name from “clairet”, once no more than a light red brought down the Garonne River from the interior. But, in its reincarnation “clairet” is wine made for anytime enjoyment. It is deliberately palecoloured, the palate dry but refreshing and stuffed with strawberry and white cherry flavours. Stéphane Defraine’s reds are always straightforward. Here is one of the better 2006 wines from the plateau between the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. It shows fine flavour with good tannin/fruit balance and robust structure. There is nothing fancy about this straightforward red, only ripe Merlot fruit with a nuance of charred oak adding interest.

The colour is polished and deep, the bouquet fine with spice and depth. Still chunky it has very good weight with underlying austerity. M6 D7

Since the days when the Clos was owned by Yves Pardes, the late “régisseur” of Château Petrus, it has consistently surpassed expectation. Now the home of Marie Courselle of Château Thieuley, it is a little gem. This is an enormous property with a large production, both red and white, but nothing is allowed to interfere with the pursuit of quality. The wine is plum-coloured with an unusual feature in the floral and aromatic bouquet where, alongside some attractive notes of smoke, there is some neatly perfumed vanilla, tea leaves, liquorice and roasted almonds. The palate, filled with surging red berry fruit, is well-balanced and defined by smooth, friendly tannins; the wine is clean and succulent. M7 D7

Many Opimians will recognize this wine. It has featured in our selections for many years while the property has emerged as one of the best growths of the Blaye region.

Following local tradition, the wine is entirely produced in concrete vats, a factor that reduces the cost while enhancing the richness of the fruit, which appears fat and jammy, but in a year or so will show more sophistication. Now a dark magenta colour, it is fresh with aromas of mint, herbs and sweet black fruit that return on the finish, all the flavours framed in soft tannin. M7 D7

Jérôme’s red is just as impressive as his white wine. The colour is solid, bright and polished with an herbal, light, but fragrant aroma featuring rose blossom. This gives it an attractive freshness that finishes without any sense of excess. M6 D7

Like many properties in the Bourg, this has been in the hands of one family for many generations; indeed they were mentioned in the 1868 edition of the Bordeaux wine guide. This special cuvée was blended for us following our tasting at the property, using very limited oak in order to keep the fruit at the front of the nose and palate. It has a powerful and piquant nose, very Merlot and full of jamscented fruit with notes of dark chocolate and vanilla. Easy on the palate, it is nicely balanced and shows a relaxed equilibrium between the tannin and fruit. M6 D7

The chill wind that sweeps over the vineyard reduces the yield from the 40 year-old vines that give concentration and complexity to the wines. This is far better than average, indeed our blind tasting placed it among some of the best wines of Saint-Émilion! Hearty, red-coloured, with a warm, composted leafy nose, fragrant nuances and mellow notes are prominent. It lacks for nothing right through to the pleasant aftertaste and graceful, flavoursome finish. M6 D6

Jean-Philippe believes in breaking with tradition. Firstly, he designed an elongated barrel coopered by the Demptos cooperage, the master barrel makers. These casks give the wines greater exposure to the wood without overwhelming the fruit. This was just one of his many innovations. Only after “J-P” purchased the estate, following a century of decline, did it awake and now the wines are fantastic. From the dark-coloured depths, powerful aromas fill the room, warm with a lacework of cinnamon, currants and plums.

Instantly accessible, the flavours show fresh, fine, delicious grape qualities with the clarity of cherry plums. M5 D6

This was the first classified wine offered “en primeur” by Opimian; we have watched with interest and ordered it many times since 1975. The property, cheek by jowl with the greatest châteaux of Saint-Émilion, sits on a bed of wind-carried loess on a ferruginous sandstone base. This environment gives the wines, from low yielding 50 year old vines, great complexity. Very good colour, with more concentration on the nose than some other Grands Crus, it is not overwhelmingly oaky, but is gently filled with blackcurrants and a touch of sweet oak. The wine is medium-bodied with smartly balanced tannin and a moderately austere grip, good harmony and real elegance. M5 D6

Only when J.P. Moueix of Château Petrus bought into Fronsac did the area gain proper recognition for its wines.

When Moueix sold in 2001, this property moved on too and under the guiding hand of Guillaume Halley the wines are superb. The colour is deep, dark and polished while on the nose the wine has ample oak showing rich black fruit aromas. In the mouth, maturity is finely balanced with good concentration, fruit harmony and tannin. M7 D8

The Lurtons, like the Johnstons, are part of the historical legacy of the Bordeaux region. Both families came from Ireland in the early 1800s, eventually taking French nationality and submerging their future into the Bordeaux trade.

In 1925, the Lurtons bought Château Brane-Cantenac and have fire-hosed capital and constant care upon its wines ever since. Baron de Brane, a brilliant “second wine” of Brane-Cantenac, is complex, aromatic, structured and powerful. The 2006 vintage has a beautiful, intensely aromatic nose dominated by red fruits, cherries, plums and blueberries with notes of spice and toast. M5 D5

Consistently one of the finest of the bourgeois châteaux of Saint-Julien, in 2005 the property was purchased by Bruno Borie, owner of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, its great neighbour. To commemorate the purchase, Hortevie now sports a re-designed orange label in the same combination of colours as Ducru-Beaucaillou. In the glass it has a rich, textured, deep colour with a perfumed bouquet, fragrant and spicy. Filled with concentrated fruit, it is supported by refined oak and balanced tannins. Green peppery notes underline youthful, hard edges, but fragrance and concentration are the dominant features of this classic charmer. M6 D6

This is an amazing vineyard consisting of 39 small pocket handkerchief-sized plots spread over the three terraces of the Pomerol plateau, the most important of which gave its name to this property. L’Enclos is one of the finest Pomerols, a good reason for its use in the Royal Dutch Court for generations. The 2006 has great colour with a fine bouquet. Quite chewy, the abundance and succulence of the fruit is magically rich. At the entry the style is clear, a symphony of perfectly ripened tannins, rich, plump and balanced with long-lasting black fruit flavours that coat the palate and linger endlessly. M6 D7

Jean-Philippe continues to seek out the absolute maximum in quality, constantly experimenting and refining the results. Here he planted 20,000 vines to the acre [the norm is close to 6000] across an arc-shaped vineyard so that every vine gets maximum exposure to sunlight at some time of each day. If that were not enough, he uses his unique barrels to add wood tannins without over-doing the wood characteristics. Every part of the vineyard year is a labour by hand, but the results are simply staggering. This is a wine lover’s Nirvana. Powerful, the black colour carries pungent, penetrating cassis aromas and while the palate is still tough, this is a monster that can be tamed. This small, expensive production is worth comparing to any top class Bordeaux. M4 D5
