All about ape

2016 Australian percussion eisteddfod 2016 Carolyn Watson—co-ordinator APE 2015 The biggest Percussion event in Australia is being held this year in Melbourne at MLC in Melbourne. The Australian Percussion Eisteddfod (APE) has been a premier event for the percussion community in Australia since 2000. The festival of young percussionists is held in three states ‐ Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. From Friday August 19 till Sunday 21, this 17th Eisteddfod will offer 28 solos, duet, chamber and large ensemble percussion events for school age percussionists across a range of percussion disciplines, including marimba, xylophone, drumkit, snare drum and timpani solo events as well as events for percussion ensembles large and small. With over 600 participants and over 100 instruments all coming together over the three days the percussion eisteddfod is one of the largest congregations of the percussion community in Australia. 2015 saw the introduction of a new drumming section, the Open Non‐tuned "Drumming" Percussion Ensemble. Designed for specialised drumming ensembles including Taiko groups, African or Latin groups and other non‐tuned drumming groups, the only limitation is that no keyboard or other pitched percussion instruments can be included. Additional hand percussion is of course encouraged and we are looking forward to again hearing some wonderful drumming in this section.

Australian drumline competition 2016 Carolyn Watson—co-ordinator DRUMLINE COMPETITION 2016 The 8th national Drumline Competition is being held under the umbrella of the Eisteddfod on Friday August 19th at MLC Melbourne. Each drumline will again compete in two disciplines ‐ a test piece performed to display excellence in technique and ensemble, as well as an own choice work performed with a visual marching routine. This year all the drumlines will again join in a Mass Drumline ‐ a spectacular display of marching and spectacular sound and colour at the conclusion of the event. This year's test piece has been written by Ted Leith. Ted’s competitive performance career began when he competed with the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps (Portland, Oregon), Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corps (Rosemont, Illinois), Rhythm X (Columbus, Ohio), and four years with Switzerland's internationally known drumming ensemble, Top Secret Drum Corps (Basil, Switzerland), Ted proudly endorses Innovative Percussion, Inc. as an independent drum set artist, and The Pearl Corporation as a music educator. .

Arthur Hull Visits Australia Optimum Percussion & Rhtyhm2Recovery Optimum Percussion, in association with Rhythm2Recovery, is very proud to announce the tour of legendary rhythm facilitator Arthur Hull who will be in Sydney and Brisbane in July this year delivering his fabulous three day ‘Rhythm Facilitation Training’ program. Arthur is known as the father of the modern day drum-circle Rhtyhm2Recovery movement and has inspired thousands of people around the world with his energy, passion and unsurpassed knowledge of all things rhythmic. In particular, he is an expert at helping people establish drum-circles as part of their classroom, school or community development practice and has created a beautifully scaffolded training program to take people through the steps of creating a vibrant rhythm community.

In the 1960’s Arthur was a well known drummer in the San Francisco area and attended many drum-circles. At one of these events he realised that with some facilitation these events could be transformed into sophisticated community music gatherings for those who previously had no experience with music. Arthur has since taken his message and techniques to countries around the world, and is largely responsible for the explosion of the community drum-circle movement internationally. Arthur is the author of several books on drum-circle facilitation and rhythm games and is also a hugely talented hand drummer, who has performed with many leading musicians.

This training is fun and practical. It will teach you a wide range of skills for bringing rhythm based music into your classroom or other setting. It includes practical exercises and games to engage participants in creative improvised music and all the attendant social and emotional development that goes with it. Arthur brings a tremendous enthusiasm to his work and many of his graduates return again and again to learn from him. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to expand your skills with a master of the art.

Registration and further information can be found at www.rhythm2recovery.com Early Bird specials prior to April 1st, 2016.

Sydney NSW - July 8th, 9th, 10th 9am to 4pm Brisbane QLD - July 15th, 16th, 17th 9am to 4pm
